Applecare is a hardware warranty. Not a "hand holding service." They are
not required to supply CD versions of software to a customer. If you don't
have a fast enough connection then get one...or go rent one at your local
Kinko's for less than the shipping costs would've been. It is not Apple's
fault.

This is a joke right? This is slander. Can you back this up with evidence?
No? I didn't think so. You must be FREAKING kidding me. I am an Apple
Certified Technicianand no where in my training did I learn of this
practice. Never have I experienced it in my entire career. I look at a book
and diagnose it. I then order the part. Apple can not tell me to say one
thing or another. It is a WARRANTY. Now if I open the book and smell
coffee and see liquid then yes, I must be honest and decline the warranty
work. But that has only happened a couple of times.

I am an authorized Service Provider. It is me that you are speaking of. I
do the work daily. You sound like something is not right in your head.

usb and card issues

2005-01-24 Thread Jacob
Hi all,
I'm having a few issues on my iBook (running 10.3.7) and SD cards.

The first problem is have is copying files to the card via a no-name
mp3 player. The drive mounts fine and I can copy files from the drive
no problems. When I try to copy *to* the drive the computer completely
freezes up and a reboot is needed. This has happened in the past using
a friends USB hard drive. The card works perfectly when connected
through my camera so that's not the issue. Is there any way to stop
the computer from freezing, or to recover from a freeze?

The second problem is that I cannot fill the card up completely. For
example, finder reports there is 72MB free and I cannot copy any more
files over. Running df in the terminal confirms there is free space as
it is at 85% capacity.

I have read somewhere that OS X doesn't allow users to completely fill
disks as a safety measure, but I only thought this applied to the boot
disk for swap space reasons. I have tried copying the files over using
the terminal as a super user (sudo) but I still get the "disk is full"
message. Is there any way around this?

I apologise if this is OT but I don't know of any OS X mailing lists
TIA

"End of Life"?

2005-01-24 Thread Claire Hart
Oops. Here's more from LEM/Charles Moore's article:
"In addition, Asustek will also start shipping iBook G5 notebooks to
Apple in the second quarter of this year." And "PowerBook G5, Quanta
Computer, 30k-50k/month, 2Q 2005." I'm skeptical. I don't think a
PowerBook G5 is that close to production, let along an iBook G5. A typo
perhaps? Or has there been a breakthrough in cooling the G5 for laptop
use that Apple and IBM haven't been letting on?

I found this at http://www.lowendmac.com/bookrev/05/0121.html
What do you think?

"End of life"?

2005-01-24 Thread Claire Hart
Charles Moore's "The 'Book Review" of 1/21/05 (from LowEndMac) quotes
Lionel from Hardmac: "We have just been informed that PowerBooks as
well as eMac SuperDrive have been declared "End of Life" at the FNAC."
Following that lead, I found that Hardmac's site (I've never been there
before) says:

An independent European source has confirmed that the following
machines have been "end of life'd" :
 Powerbook G4 12" 1.33 GHz combo (M9183*/A)
 Powerbook G4 12" 1.33 GHz Superdrive (M9184*/A)
 Powerbook G4 15" 1.33 GHz Combo (M9421*/A)
 Powerbook G4 15" 1.5 GHz Superdrive (M9422*/A)
 Powerbook G4 17" 1.5 GHz Superdrive (M9462*/A)
In short, the whole Powerbook range is up for a refresh.
[Update]: another source from Australia has confirmed it. There is an
additional comment given by Apple regarding the current status: "AFSI",
meaning Awaiting Further Shipping Information.

I've gathered that a G5 PowerBook is a long way off. What do you think
will replace the above PowerBooks?

Re: Applecare, how long should it take?

2005-01-24 Thread Geoffrey Loeffler
Apple Care is terrible, the last 3 years there like dealing with, I
can't think of anyone worse. They love to fly the flag of best in the
business as we all flooded the consumer reports site and voted Apple
excellent. They have lied to me, damaged my equipment and lied to me
more, and every step they were rude, crude and just do not care.

I swore off apple but busted down and got 2 iPods and 2 iBooks for my
wife and one of my kids. I called Apple Care and said I need to get a
copy of the 10.3.7 update, lady snaps did you sign up yet, well no I
need the software. So dealt with her, then she said we might as well
get the iPods signed up, well I already paid for that, I don't see it.
Well if I get my software update,,,maybe you will. it's 100 megs and I
am at another house in another state all I have a dial up, all totaled
the upgrades were closer to 200 megs.

I asked Apple Care if they could send a disk with these updates on
there, I would pay for shipping and any reasonable costs. The new
tomato on the phone said it's not Apples fault that you do not have the
capability to down load a 100 meg file. I said, Apple has done this in
the past remembering way back to 8.1 to 8.6, they sent me a copy on a
disk that said will work on a 7200 only, but don't worry it will work
on your machine. It did and that was Apple Care back then. Happy
friendly, these people are like, rotten tomatoes.

Now they hold your machine, tick, tick, tick, goes the days off your
Apple Care 3 year love affair. That works in the equation, you should
ask for the days back as your losing coverage at there fault.

I have even talked with Gwendolyn Wells, the head of Apple Care World
Wide Operations in the mother ship. She even said her office was next
to Steves, really. The whole attitude of KMA was the same through the
whole food chain of Apple Care personnel, right up to her and she was
the Queen of rude. I did not get rude or crude, actually other then the
system 8 disk I have never had to use Apple Care. Till the PowerBook
rip off.

The sales people are great, I even called back and wanted the
supervisor for the sales dept. I got the middle guy and told him sorry
I need the manager, he was dancing, but just kept nicely saying this is
the man I need. I won and got the guy, I thanked him for training these
xmas fill in sales help so well and mentioned the name of the person I
dealt with.
I think it's important to let managers know real good and real bad.

Now I really want a G5, tricked out it will run between 5 to 10K. When
Apple Care got nasty because I needed a upgrade disk and I mean snotty,
I just said I will wait to get a good used one from someone who has
worked the bugs out and takes care of them the way I do. Apple Care is
the worst part of Apple, now please.. I know thousands of of people
will say I got mine just fine. Well good for you. However look at
Apples RMAs or recalls, most everyone came from court actions. I have
grown sick of Apple but like the system and especially the people who
own and use them. Just pray you got a good one, if not good luck, the
squeaky wheel gets oiled.

Also do not expect much complaints on the Apple boards, they monitor
them very closely. Even lists like this. When I was really hot over the
PowerBook rip-offs, there was a poster who responded with words only
someone working on my PBs would have known and they posted a nasty
note.

Oh yeah when can you expect your book. Apple has had some problems with
the vendors who supply Apple with its parts. There is a back log of
orders and be assured the vendors for Apple are working 24 hours to
fulfill the needs of our customers. Be assured Apple is monitoring the
situation closely and will advise you when the expected date of return
will be. Apple wants to thank you for your patience during this time of
unexpected delays.

Sorry to be bearer of bad news, but Apple Care IS Bad News 17 days for
a screen, what kind of moronic planning is that
Tick Tick Tick.
Call them, ask for a supervisor, don't get yelling and screaming, even
though you may at times feel the urge and ALWAYS start a conversation
with can I have your name and ext number, I like to work with good
people. Otherwise if the conversation turns negative you have the name
of the person.

One more thing, if you think there is a problem get it fixed before the
last year of Apple Care and for sure the last 6 months. Less then 6
months they will blame it on a spilled liquid sometime in the last 6
months and Apple does not cover that.

Good luck
Geoff

That $400 LCD is still $400 when Apple doesn't have one for three weeks, or
worse yet, when they refuse to repair their defective product due to
so-called "user error".

Extended warranties are rarely a good value, and AppleCare is no exception.
If the LCD went out on my 12" G4, I'd find a used LCD to replace it with,
and certainly wouldn't buy it from Apple.

That is a ridiculous statement. I have clients sending in there laptops to
Apple all the time. Dozens of them. The most common turn around time is 72
hours. This is an ISOLATED incident.

And buying a $400 LCD would be a better buy?

One should, however, always have a backup computer.

Lombard 9.1 disaster

2005-01-24 Thread Kristina Rost
Holy Smoke,

My PB can't find its system folder!

I had loaded 9.1 over 9.0 in order to get netscape to get paypal...

It would lock up and someone suggested I put a ~ in front of my Iomega
Driver, which I did, and rebooted...then I tried to open my old Fractual
Expressions program and it froze.

never to wake up again!

I have tried with extensions off, with a norton cd i made from my zip disc,
where I keep my norton for my g3 beige

... and it won't recognize that either!

It just clicks and goes from OS face/folder to question mark!

phooey that my expressions program won't work with 9.0
OR my ATM 4.0 deluxe, on either of my G3's

ahhh, here goes all kinds of upgrading, $$$ I really don't have and the old
programs were working fine!

in and get it replaced. I think it was like 3 weeks or so like your
situation. I don't have an answer for you, other than to say it
happens once in a while. If I were in your shoes, I'd probably bite my
lip but in the end, be glad that they're fixing it.

Hang in there.

Ok, but why should I need to remove all the keys, like so many ppl have
suggested? Its not all over the keyboard, just in one corner, and to
tell u the truth...I don't know exactly what fell beneath the keyboard
that made it stickey. The main part of the stickyness is on the corner
of the keyboard, in range of a small paintbrush, and the rest is in
_very_ small portions throughout the left side of the keyboard, so it
sounds like just dipping it over and over in water, getting that one
part w/ a paint brush, and leaving it to dry for days should work.
I said to remove the keys based on my own experience. The sticky stuff
was on the keyboard and the underside of the keys. I originally tried
cleaning the kb with q-tips but couldn't get to the bottom of the keys.

The Lombard and the Wallstreet were both able to play DVDs under OS 9
by virtue of a DVD decoder chipset, in the form of a ZiVA DVD decoder
built into the MLB in some Lombard models, or supplied in a ZV-enabled
PCMCIA card along with the Wallstreet's DVD drive (or as part of an
Apple Store BTO option). However, these extra DVD decoder chipsets are
not supported by OS X.

Mplayer (at least the Linux version) has support for the Creative DXR2
which is based on the ZiVA decoder. You could try it. I don't have a
Wallstreet or I would try it myself.

Re: iBook CD ROM dead, Install question. HELP

2005-01-24 Thread Alex Santos 100MB Neostrada Mail
OK I have 512MB that I bought for this iBook and I will install it and
try it out.

But how would you explain OS9 not booting?
Let me explain the OS9 issue. I installed it over FW, it is original
9.1 CD which came with the first release of OX and it wouldn't boot
either, is that indicative of anything? I installed OS9, it didn't work
so I formatted the drive and installed OSX afterward, and that's where
I am at now, so there is no OS9 on it now.

OK I will install RAM and let you know, this is brand new memory
(Kingston, not even opened yet) I had ordered for this model of iBook
so if it doesn't work then it can't be RAM.

Just caught the first line. 64 megs of ram isn't enough to boot into

Jaguar needs 128 megs and I think Panther needs 256 megs.

Re: sticky keyboard

2005-01-24 Thread Andrew, a Mac Freak
Ok, but why should I need to remove all the keys, like so many ppl have
suggested? Its not all over the keyboard, just in one corner, and to
tell u the truth...I don't know exactly what fell beneath the keyboard
that made it stickey. The main part of the stickyness is on the corner
of the keyboard, in range of a small paintbrush, and the rest is in
_very_ small portions throughout the left side of the keyboard, so it
sounds like just dipping it over and over in water, getting that one
part w/ a paint brush, and leaving it to dry for days should work.

BTW, I wasn't thinking of using soap, but why no hairdryers? cm-high
water entered my dad's Dell Latitude (we are all mac ppl now, that was
his last Windows machine), and I revived it with a hairdryer (again,
this was the dog's doing; he causes much computer destruction :)

Re: stickey keys

2005-01-24 Thread Andrew, a Mac Freak
Yes, I was thinking that completely washing it should work, like they do
with compact Mac mobos in dishwashers. To replace the whole keyboard in
the event that washing it doesn't work, I was thinking something like
this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=25444&item=5159357049&rd=1
Would this work? I looked at the clamshell keyboard, and the cable
seems to lack some pins so it would appear that its a no-go on an iBook
G4, but the cables on this 700mhz iBook are identical to the ones on my
iBook G4, its just that the keys are more transparent.

BTW, I did also see those keyboard skins and thought they were cool too
;D

Re: Sticky keys

2005-01-24 Thread Stuart Saunders
Andrew,
It depends how much of a drink your keyboard took, but I suggest you
take it out, and holding it vertically (left side down) _gently_ shower
it with plain water. No force; don't work the keys, that will pump
water into the contacts. A fine paintbrush might be able to work
between the keys. Then rinse again, and stand vertically in the fridge
for a day or two.
If that doesn't work, repeat, shower with a little more force, and
work the sticky keys. Rinse, and back in the fridge.

Good luck.

Re: Playing DVDs on a Wallstreet running OSX

2005-01-24 Thread Andrew F.
If you want to watch DVDs, my recommendation would be to sell the Wallstreet
and buy either a Pismo, a 500MHz or faster iBook or any flavor of TiBook.
DVD playback quality on my 400MHz Pismo under Panther is excellent, all but
indistinguishable from my 12" 1GHz G4 and absolutely good enough for regular
use. You could probably get $250 for a clean Wallstreet, and a Pismo will
likely set you back $400 or so, making it about the cheapest route to good
DVD performance under OSX.

It's actually referred to sometimes as the Wallstreet II. Some parts are
interchangeable, but not all. I've opened the different WS's about 50
times and have another one this week. They are still usable machines if
one is cashstrapped and have effective apps.

I have a PB G4 400 now and wouldn't go back. The Titaniums are getting
cheaper and cheaper so unless it's for typing and similar I see little
reason to spend the same amount keeping a WS or PDQ up to shape than
buying a second hand Titanium.

In case DVDs a re viewed only occasionally, I suppose reboot to OS 9 for

I need to know as much as possible in order to plan for possibly opening
