laptops before that (not to mention the older 800X600 and even 640X400
models), so I guess I'm used to the amount of real estate I have.
I was seriously thinking about moving up to the 15 this time, but the
small
size and light weight won out again when I saw them side-by-side.

Alright, I'm thinking to replace my 17 PB with the new 12 PB and
having a 20 Cinema Monitor for my desk. What is the max resolution on
the monitor when connected to the PB ? The 17 is too unwieldy and
heavy for my limitations in moving on one leg !

TIA for your insights. Andre.

Ethernet WiFi adapters - from AirPort in TiBook ???

2005-02-04 Thread Frank Cornew
What's the experience been with standalone ethernet to WiFi adapters?
(beyond that they need external power) Can anyone recommend specific
units? b or g, OSX or 9

Looks like I need to go that route, and would like to get something
that works without too much pain... First shot at a Linksys USB
adapter appears to have been a deadend as I have been stumped in
attempting to get a mac to network out of the USB port...

Re: 1 printer, 1 Mac, 2 accounts

2005-02-04 Thread Luis Sequeira
The exclamation mark means that print jobs are stopped.
A very common problem with hp all-in-ones (I know, I have one) is
that they don't play well with fast user switching. In my case I
cannot print at all when more than one user is logged in at the same
time. If that is your situation, try to restart and then log in to
only the second account.

Also, after waking from sleep, problems tend to appear with these printers.
One way to recover, without restarting (or logging out and in again) is to
1) open Activity Monitor (in Applications/Utilities)
2) select the hp communications process and kill it (you may type
hp in the little search box first to locate it)
3) In the Finder, open Library/Printers/HP and double-click on the
hp communications icon to restart it. This is a faceless background
application that does not show up in the dock, hence the tortuous way
to kill and restart.

Usually, doing 1)-3) (with only one user logged in!) and starting
jobs in the printer (double click the printer name in Printer Setup
Utility and click Start Jobs in case they are stopped) restores
functionality.

Of course, if it does not appear in Printer Setup Utility, that harder to do...
Luis Sequeira
Re: 1 printer, 1 Mac, 2 accounts
Hi Mary,
After setting up the second account, I tried simply printing first, the pri=

Okay, I just tried printing again, this time in the Print dialog window the=
re is an exclamation point by the HP printer name. This brings up the Print=
er Utility program. The printer is there, so I don't know what else to do a=
t this point.=20
When I send the print job, everything goes as normal, I get an blue white=
spraling progress bar and then the solid blue progress bar and it looks li=
ke normal, yet part-way it just stops and says Jobs Stopped. When I Start J=
obs it just repeats the same over again.=20
This is the exact same behavior in both accounts. I no longer can print fro=
m the original account.
I am currently at a loss, so any ideas are appreciated. Thank you.

Never mind about makes/models as I live in Sweden and

I sold my Apple Original Airport Card for $100 (to the US) and got a
second hand Orinoco Gold *with* IOXperts driver for $50 (in Sweden) to
use in my PB G4 / 400. The Orinoco picks up networks that just weren't
there before. Now, if I only could find an antenna to improve this even
further.
Yes, I don't regret this move.

I would imagine the external monitor resolution to be the same as that of

video ram.

Can't help other than that as I have never hooked my 12 up to any external

Since you must have a Motorola phone. :-) I often use iTunes to get a
thirty second clip out of any song I want to put on my phone.

1. Select the song you want. (One Click)
2. Get Info ( Use Apple-I)
3. Click on the Options tab.
4. Set the start and stop time.
5. Then Show Song File (Apple-R) And upload to your WAP server or
whatever you use to load the MP3 on the phone.

For the USB ones you need drivers, D-link sells a usb adapter with an
OS X driver.

for the external boxes, we've used both D-Link and Netgear models;
they're largely plug-n-play with anything that's got an ethernet port.

One of them's connected to a laserjet in a difficult-to-wire corner.
If you want to access their advanced features, like WEP keys, etc, you
need to use something capable of running a web browser, but they're
great.

Any OS will work, since they simply appear to be a ethernet connection.
I used my 540C running 8.1 to configure the D-link ones...

That is a good question. I don't know if the
wireless router supports appletalk or not. It
does claim to be OSX compatible. Nonetheless, my
problem seems to be different from this. The
wireless router does not even recognize the
Bridge as a live Ethernet device (the connection
light does not come on). The bridge I am using is
a Dayna EtherPrint-3. I don't know anything about
it but will look it up on the internet.

Let me make sure I am understanding this correctly and maybe clear up
some confusion on the list. You have a wireless router that you
computers connect to wirelessly and it connects to the internet. Then
you have the EtherPrint-3 which is a Ethernet adapter for printers that
don't have a built-in network card. I haven't been able to find any
information about the EtherPrint-3 but the other models in the series
have a 10base-T Ethernet connection and a serial connection to the
printer. What you will need to do is connect the EtherPrint to a LAN
port on the router. If you don't get a connect light then try a
crossover cable. If that doesn't work I am guessing that the wireless
router doesn't route Appletalk and you will need to get one that will,
or find a TCP/IP based printer adapter that will work with you laserjet.

Wireless Card

2005-02-04 Thread John Slavin
I have a Cisco Card in my Wallstreet. I'm running 10.3.x via
XPostfacto. Everything has been working great for several months now.
I stuck a USB PC card in the extra card slot to see if I could get a
USB Webcam to work. Now my wireless card doesn't seem to work. The
lights come on, but the card won't show up in the Network Status pane,
but it does show up in the Network Port Configurations. When I run the
Cisco software, it doesn't show any signal from the base station,
although I know it's working, (to be sure, I tried a different base
station with the same result), but it won't associate with it. I have
two of these cards, and neither will work and I've tried both slots,
with the same result. The card's troubleshooting guide says that when
the green light flash quickly, which it now does, it it working, but
unable to associate. I even tried booting back into 9.2, but the card
shows the same thing. I'm fearful I've blown something on the card
slot. Any ideas? And if I did blow something, what would have blown?

I only convert them to mono when I desperately need the space.
Otherwise they sound better left alone in Stereo.

Subject: Re: Printing and Wireless Connectivity

The connect light on the router or EtherPrint don't care about
protocols such as AppleTalk, they are just looking for a valid
Ethernet connection. If the light isn't coming on you have a
problem. Guessing that the router's switch is 10/100 there MAY be an
issue with the EtherPrint and 10/100 auto-sensing. Some older
10BaseT hardware doesn't work well with 10/100 gear, the auto-sensing
gets confused. Asante 10BaseT stuff in particular was prone to this.
However, IIRC the EtherPrint-3 was iMac vintage equipment meant to
link the old and the new. The iMacs had 10/100 so it should work.
The solution to the auto-sensing problem is to stick a 10BaseT hub
between the two devices.

Re: Printing and Wireless Connectivity

2005-02-04 Thread Mark D. Chapman
Thank-you to everyone that responded.
Collectively your advice was very helpful. Here
is my initial problem and the solution.

Problem: I could connect wirelessly to the
internet or print to my old Laserwriter but not
both at the same time.

Solution:
New network configuration. DSL modem to WAN port
on wireless router, LAN port on wireless router
to LAN port on wired router, DHCP turned off on
wired router, IP address changed on wired router,
wired router rebooted.

I can now connect to the internet and print to my
LaserWriter wirelessly. I still don't know why
the wireless router doesn't connect with my
printer but with this setup it doesn't matter.

Absolutely wonderful. Thanks all, Mark.

Re: Can you do the same with usb2? [WAS: Use External FW drive as backup boot drive for Powerbook?]

2005-02-04 Thread Kris Tilford
I was wondering if you can boot off of an external USB2 hard drive. -
Rudi
My understanding is that since USB isn't shown in the device tree it
can't be booted in a normal way. You can select it in Startup Disk but
it won't boot. I believe some type of hack could be written to allow
USB booting, but none are available AFAIK.

The older 802.11b cards with the Prism chip set did work with Airport

(that's the one I couldn't remember) work with Apple Airport software.

There are several that use a certain chip set (can't

IMO this is the
way to go as it makes it more compatible. I was

Re: Replacing RAM: PC100 vs PC133

2005-02-04 Thread Jeff Hubatka
From: John P. Roberts [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Replacing RAM: PC100 vs PC133
Date: Thu, 3 Feb 2005 20:49:23 -0800
I have a PB G4 400 MHz (Titanium Mercury) and want to upgrade my RAM.
I currently have one 256 and one 128 Mb SIMM for a total of 384 Mb.
Both SIMMs are PC100, whatever that means. I was thinking of
replacing the 128 Mb with a 512, to yield 768 Mb. I have two questions:
Can I just swap the 512 into the 128's (bottom) slot, or does the 512
need to go in the top slot and the old 256 into the bottom?
Can I have one PC133 SIMM and one PC100, or do they both need to be the
same?
You can mix them. The TiBook can use a high-profile RAM stick in the
top slot, the bottom has to be the low-profile type.

Re: 802.11g on a lombard

2005-02-04 Thread Dean
So, that means that the great deal I just got on E-bay for a new
Belkin PCICMA card and
router that is listed at the Belkin site as working with OS 10.2.6 and
airport 3.0.4, will just be going back on E-bay?

So I'd heard, but when I plugged one into my wife's Lombard, it just said no
AirPort card installed.
It might work on something modern that supports AirPort (Pismo or newer),
but It sure didn't work on the Lombard.
