Re: 802.11g on a lombard

2005-02-05 Thread Mike McGinnis
Not necessarily, the Belkin card in the red/gray box
should have the broadcom chipset and will work with
airport drivers. However the Belkin card in the
white/gray box was in my case, a Ralink Technologies
chipset. If you go to their website you will find
drivers, however airport drivers will not work.

Been there tried that, Mike

So, that means that the great deal I just got on
 E-bay for a new
 Belkin PCICMA card and
router that is listed at the Belkin site as working
 with OS 10.2.6 and
airport 3.0.4, will just be going back on E-bay?

Well I did a search on Google and found that the card I bought (model

*was produced in 3 versions. The first one uses the Broadcom chipset,
version 2, and 3 use the Ralink chips. So I wont know till I get it what
I'm dealing with.

Wall Street Refurb

2005-02-05 Thread Sally Shumard
My 17 year old son has an old series 1 (233ghz) Wall Street Powerbook
that someone gave to him. I want to update it, so I've been reading
the archives of this list to see whether it is feasible. I set a
budget and was able to get the following parts +shipping for $238:
Sonnet Crescendo G3/500 processor
Fujitsu h-drive 40M 5400rpm (MHT2040AH)
256 Megs of low profile RAM (plus the original 64, for now)
Belkin 802.11g Wireless Network card (matching our wireless router)
Mac OS 10.2.8

My question is this; in which order should all of these parts be
installed? Can you direct me to some sites on the internet for good
instructions? Is there anything important I should know about this
process before beginning?

Thanks for your expertise! Before discovering this list, I didn't
think it would be worth it to save this Powerbook.

Re: Wall Street Refurb

2005-02-05 Thread Tom Peterson
Wow, I have a similar situation, Wallstreet RIP,
It began as a 12inch passive display 233 no cache bad PMU, so so battery.
Replaced PMU, got it to boot reliably.
Went to Ebay and optained 14 inch display assembly and installed.
Went to Ebay and obtained blue chip g4 500 mhz replacement processor.
Went to Ebay and optained a pair of low profile 256 PC 100 CL2 low profile
SO Dimms and installed on blue chip processor card.
Purchased 40 gig 2.5 in 9mm thick laptop hard drive, formatted first
partition to less than 8 megs.
Go to http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPostFacto/ and find and install
XPostFacto 3.0 and installed OSX 10.3.X, Set preferences in XPF to User
Patched Rage Pro Drivers to get thousands of colors without artifacts.
I went to Ebay and obtained USB II card, Firewire Card, and Lucent Gold
802.11B Card which under OS 9 shows up as airport card, and Under OSX I have
subscribed to IOXperts for their driver for this card, which works well.
I did this over the course of 2 years, but Other than having 2 sound cards
fail, the beast works well.

Re: Printing and Wireless Connectivity

2005-02-05 Thread Mark D. Chapman
The connect light on the router or EtherPrint don't care about
protocols such as AppleTalk, they are just looking for a valid
Ethernet connection. If the light isn't coming on you have a
problem. Guessing that the router's switch is 10/100 there MAY be an
issue with the EtherPrint and 10/100 auto-sensing. Some older
10BaseT hardware doesn't work well with 10/100 gear, the auto-sensing
gets confused. Asante 10BaseT stuff in particular was prone to this.
However, IIRC the EtherPrint-3 was iMac vintage equipment meant to
link the old and the new. The iMacs had 10/100 so it should work.
The solution to the auto-sensing problem is to stick a 10BaseT hub
That is easy enough. I have an old hub sitting around that would do the job.
Thanks, Mark

I've had good results from Omni-Cleanz, but I think Bruce said it was just
basically distilled water. Although, it does a good job at dissolving almost
anything and doesn't have any solvent that can damage the finish.

Re: Wall Street Refurb

2005-02-05 Thread Sally Shumard
I would like to compare the before and after performance of this
Wall Street Powerbook. What program do you recommend I use to test it
before beginning this upgrade? System profiler is installed.

I did read the whole thread concerning Tom's Wall Street RIP project.
I haven't worked in a Mac environment for three years now, so I have
to look everything up or ask for help. I once had a Wall Street series
2 for a couple of years, before taking a job in a Windows XP
environment.
So, I apologize in advance for overlooking the obvious sometimes...
Should the harddrive be installed first? Should I boot that up before
attempting to install the Sonnet Crescendo upgrade? Don't I need to
install the Crescendo before adding the RAM?

The current harddrive is only 2 gigs, with 1.22 available.
Thanks!
Sally

Lost Network connection ???

2005-02-05 Thread Larry le Mac
I have a simple setup OS X.3):
ADS modem
   !
D-link router
   ! !
Mac 1 Mac 2
And they've been working fine until recently when one
of the Macs has lost contact with the Internet.
When I check the Network settings, the working Mac has
IP 213.66.212.57 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0
but the other one as a self assigned 169.254.244.32
and more pussling, the subnet mask 255.255.0.0
I have actually had exactly the same problem with a friend's
iMacs and OS 9.2, but I put that down to a crap cable,
though it was never verified.
Here I have tried two different cables and restarted, and
tried different ports on the router.
It did work fine until it just suddenly gave up... ?!
I presume the subnet mask has something to do with it
(I really must do an IP basics course!!)
Any help would be much apreciated.

Wallstreet Battery.

2005-02-05 Thread Kenneth Vann
Can anyone tell me if new batteries are available from Apple for the
Wallstreet PowerBook? Can anyone recomend a Apple service dealer in
Virginia?

I have had bad luck with third party batteries. The one I go in new this
week does not charge. Does not charge in a VST charger or the PowerBook.
Vendor does not answer phone calls, so I have contacted my Charge Card
company.

The APC one I got 6 months ago, does not charge in VST Charger or
PowerBook. APC does not want to replace it under their one year warranty,
as this would be the third one from them.

The Apple brand I have does charge in both the VST Charger and PowerBook,
but because of age, it only last about 50 minutes.

Belkin changed the chip set and did not tell anyone.I have seen some
reports of this. Its a cost thing. They can save pennies per unit by
changing chip sets. You may have gotten one that uses the Ralink chip set.
if so drivers are here.

Of cource that's not what you wanted.

As far as I know the Buffalo 802.11g card will work with OSX and AirPort
Software. Get the right one, a Buffalo has three different ones for
different price points.

There is a link to this card on my FAQ site.

Re: Wall Street Refurb

2005-02-05 Thread Ben Dyer
I'd recommend the following order, but others are equally good:
1. Install additional RAM
2. Boot machine and verify that everything works, and the RAM is
detected
3. Install new hard drive
4. Reformat, then install OS and needed applications
5. Test wireless card
6. Verify that everything is working as expected
7. Begin processor card installation (you may need to run a program to
save your machine's ROM before you install; refer to the instructions
that came with the card)
8. Remove old processor card, and remove its RAM
9. Install all RAM on the new processor card
10. Install new processor card
11. Boot machine and verify that everything works

It's important to only do a step or two at a time, and to test
constantly -- that way, if something fails, you know roughly what it
is.

Cheers,
Ben

I'm not sure what is wrong, but in my experience, D-Link routers, when
acting as DHCP servers, provide IPs in the range of 192.168.0.100 to
192.168.0.199 by default. I don't understand how your working Mac can get an
IP address of 213.66.212.57. What I think is happening is that your D-Link,
for some reason, isn't acting as a DHCP server and doesn't distribute IP
addresses anymore. The one your working Mac has is probably provided by your
Internet Service Provider DHCP server. When your Mac 2 tries to connect, the
DHCP server of your ISP denies giving it an IP address, so it defaults to
169.254.244.32. So, I would check your D-Link configuration, specially the
section about DHCP...

I didn't check your URL, Laurent, but are these sub-$100 batteries,
actual Apple batteries, or 3rd-party compatibles?

Something for battery buyers to keep in mind is that Lithium-Ion
batteries have life-limits on *both* the total number of
charge/discharge cycles (~200 is a frequent number quoted) *and* on
the their shelf life. You just have a 2-3 year practical life on
batteries and there's not much to do except replace them.
Unfortunately

**rechargeable batteries start their life-span immediately upon manufacture.**

So, if Apple is not buying newly manufactured Wallstreet batteries
(and one wonders whether the market is big enough for a 1998 laptop,
to buy many newly manufactured batteries), whatever you buy
off-the-shelf is going to be a partial-life battery. How much life
remains, depends on how long ago it was manufactured.

And FWIW even if you never run your PB on batteries, the Li Ions
won't remain100% usable (i.e. number of hrs of useful charge)
generally for more than 2 or 3 years. (Notice I didn't say they would
die in 2-3 years, I said they would not allow you to run as long on
battery power as they initially did.) There are exceptions, of course.

The same things applies to 3rd-party batteries.
