external DVD drive on Pismo
Hi G-bookers I have an external USB DVD drive (the original DVD drive from my Sawtooth in a cheap'n'cheerful USB 2 enclosure). I can use it to play DVDs on the Sawtooth but not on my Pismo. I can think of two possible reasons: * Apple DVD player doesn't want to know about external drives. * This drive is too new for OS9.2.2 itself. Am I talking garbage? Is there a way of getting the Pismo to play DVDs from this external drive under OS9.2.2? many thanks Bruce Ryan -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Saving AOL messages
Hello everyone. I am having some issues with my AOL email account, and I hope that I can explain my dilemma. (Please, no comments about AOL-I have my reasons) Anyone that uses AOL and OS 10.3 knows that the AOL software has serious connection problems. Recently AOL figured out a way to access AOL messages using the Mail program in OSX. Being as I was already using Mail to check several other email accounts (all POP accounts), I was happy to have some alternative the the AOL for OS X. The problem is that on all my other accounts, I l have mail set to leave messages on the servers and periodically go into accounts and erase the server. I do this so that I can download messages onto all 4 Mac computers that I regularly use. The messages are automatically saved on all of my computers. I believe that because the AOL account is imap, it works differently. When I check mail, the AOL messages go into my AOL ibox, but they only stay there a few days. The only way to get them there for a longer period is to save them, or to mark them as unread. Does anyone know how to get them to stay in the inbox so that I can delete them when I want to, not when AOL wants them deleted? I appreciate any help. I am posting this to the g-book list and the g-list. I hope that is OK. Please also respond to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Best Regards, Tom -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Missing messages
We got your messages. I have noticed that using the mac mail sometimes delays the sending of messages until later when it has a better connection with the server. Sometimes on the macmail it can take me almost a day and a half to get a message to send, even if i restart on occasion. :) I recommend for your mail services to use Thunderbird by Mozilla. Of course I have a different smtp server set up for that one, too. On Mar 23, 2005, at 7:36 AM, Dennis B. Swaney wrote: I sent two messages to this list yesterday, but neither have shown up. Re: Can I monitor my network?
Steve Fuller wrote: As it is NmapFE is pretty simple. It will tell you what other systems are on your network, and what, to some extent they're doing there. Sorry if I am repeating someone else here, I came into this conversation late and missed most of it. Arpwatch will keep an eye on your LAN for changes to MAC addresses as well as IPs, and will email you a report to boot. So, if someone were to attach to your wLAN, you could find out about it this way, even if they attempt to use a previously used IP address to try to mask their login, because arpwatch will show changes in Ethernet card vendor too. Nmap will allow you to probe a system on your LAN or not to look for open ports and/or listening services. Etherape will give you a visual display of traffic on your LAN. It's not very useful for trapping events because a trail can disappear fast, but it can help you distinguish traffic visually. To actually monitor what is going on within a LAN: Ethereal is a nice X tool, but it is a resource hog and can intermittently lock up, especially if you let it run on and on, capturing and displaying packets. I prefer a good command-line tool instead, such as ngrep (network grep). This is a packet sniffer that will allow you to capture part or all of the traffic emanating from or going to a particular system, or your entire LAN. You can spool the packets to disk to be read later, or set up a shell script to occasionally email you a copy of the spool file and then empty it for more data. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Receiving faxes
I'm using an Aluminum PowerBook G4, and my DSL service just went down. So, I'm using the phone line that usually connects to my fax machine to go online via dialup. I've set up Faxing to receive, Modem to notify me of incoming calls when connected to the internet, to play an alert sound when receiving a call, and to send me an email notifying me of the fax. A friend sent a fax a while ago, and I didn't get any notification (that I'm aware of; I may have been away from the computer at that time). I called him and he said he sent it and got confirmation, so I checked my Faxes folder, and there it was. I don't know if I was online at the time, but I'm assuming that I can't be online and receive a fax at the same time. Is this a correct assumption? Does anyone know what the Subject, Sender, or body text will be/contain when I'm sent an email that a fax has been received? [OT] iPod problem!
A little off-topic, but since the iPod is close to a Mac, maybe someone will have a suggestion. I think that I busted my iPod. I just switched to a new system and synchronized my iPod from iTunes without realizing that I haven't signed on for the iTunes music store. Well, no song would play anymore. So, I went back to iTunes, signed in the music store and then plugged my iPod. I almost immediately got the system folder flashing picture on the iPod and then a message on my Mac saying that the disk I just connected was not initialized! So, I initially used the iPod updater to restore it to factory default. After a few seconds, the restore is aborted because The iPod disk does not have the correct structure., whatever that means. I then launched Disk Utility but then, my iPod is reported as an external FireWire disk of 82.6GB in size! It's only 20GB! I've tried nonetheless to erase it but after a few second, Disk Utility reports that Disk Erase failed with the error: Input/output error. Re: Can I monitor my network?
Hello all; especially Steve and Bruce, Thanks for all the info. I'm really surprised something SIMPLE hasn't been created yet to monitor the PC/Mac traffic on a private wired/wireless network. When I mentioned MacStumbler, I was referring to how it detects networks. I'd like a program laid out the same way as MacStumbler. . . except instead of detecting networks, is detects other computers logged onto your network. This can be done by simply popping up a DNS address or port ID that the computer is currently using, then if it's someone you know, you should be able to re-name that ID to whatever he/she calls their computer on a network. For example, my Pismo is called, Zoltans-Computer on a network. Wouldn't that be a nice and simple app.? I'm not interested in WHAT they are doing on my network, I just want to know WHO is on my network and when. The programs Steve and Bruce mentioned are very powerful in their own right, but are not what I'm looking for. These programs made me think about my previous Amiga days. . .which I don't need to think about anymore; programming in Assembler back in the late 80's, early 90's was what I primarily did on my Amiga, creating games for the Atari Lynx. YIKES! It was a nightmare to say the least. Programming and hacking are the two things that caused my nervous breakdown several years ago. I simply don't have the patience anymore; which is why I switched to Mac back in 1991. I fell in love with the idea that the easier an OS is to use, the more powerful it is. I still have many programming friends from the day and they haven't had a brain fart like me, and they are pretty interested in my idea for this basic yet powerful little tool to be able to simply see who's on and when. Now, this is for Bruce. . .using the GO/NETWORK command in finder is useful, but it will only show who's online when they are using a Mac and have file sharing turned on. If file sharing is turned off, then nothing shows up at all. I've noticed that a friend of mine showed up the other week using a Dell laptop, but he had Windows XP's version of file sharing turned on. . .something like network sharing or to that effect. Not sure if that was even supposed to happen, but it did. For what it's worth, I thank all for responding to my thread. . .who knows, some day I may have my own little app. that will do this. Of course, it will be freeware! :) Zoltan THE BLUETOOTH (and WiFi) MASTER i.e., Master at set up, install, understanding interference and custom configs. . .but NOT hacking, programming. . .anymore. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Receiving faxes
On Mar 24, 2005, at 2:36 PM, Laurent Daudelin wrote: Are you running OS X? If so, are you sure your email address is properly identified in the Print Fax preferences? Yes and yes. If you're receiving a fax, it is possible, since your DSL is down that when the OS X fax software received the fax and tried to send the notification, there were no network, since the phone line was used to receive the said fax. So the OS doesn't use Mail to create that email? (If it did, it would sit in my Out box until I went online again.) Thinking about this, it's kind of weird, unless one has both a DSL connection and a phone line plugged into the Mac (which would tie me to my desk, rather than my usual roaming around my house using Airport). A fax comes in, over the only line available, and the OS tries to send an email by some means other than the default email program. It can't, and generates no error message? Not how I would have programmed it, but they didn't ask me. I would suggest you try again when your DSL line is up again. -Laurent. -- Ah, but then I won't need it. Since I have to use the fax phone line to get online while the DSL is out, I want to receive faxes on the PowerBook. Once the DSL is back, I'll plug the phone cord into the fax machine again. Display weirdness!
Hello all, I have what used to be a Wallstreet 233mhz 12.1 display. I have upgraded it as follows - 20 mb HD; - 14.1 monitor; - Sonnet W3-G3 500mhz board installed; - 288 Ram; I was using the Book with OS 9.2.2 and all was perfect. I then upgraded to OS 10.2 and there is a weird thing happening which is as follows: When I turn on the computer, I get to see the gray apple logo with gray background, and then the monitor goes all black. It remains black until everything is loaded and then I have to MANUALLY, press the monitor brightness button in order to get the monitor to come on. If I try hard enough, I can see the shadow of what goes on on the monitor when it is black. Does anyone have a clue? The monitor functioned perfectly well under OS 9.2.2. Even now, if I start up using 9.2. this issue does not happen. Weird... Thanks for any help or suggestions. NBT -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Display weirdness!
This is a known issue with Wallstreet PBs under 10.2. The partial fix, which seems to work for most people, is to restart under OS 9, put it to sleep, wake it up again, and then restart again under X. More iBook questions
I've installed 9.2.1 on the iBook that I was given. However, I noticed that on the install CD, there is a folder for Firmware Update to update the Firmware to 4.1.7 I ran Apple System Profiler, but I couldn't find an entry that told me what firmware version was installed. What should I look for, and where? Should I just try to install the Firmware Update anyway? I've found information on the Apple website that will help me max out the RAM, and install an AirPort card in the iBook. What about installing a larger HD? Is that user do-able? Any limitations on size? I was thinking of 60 - 80 GB. -- Sincerely, Dennis B. What should I look for, and where? Should I just try to install the Firmware Update anyway? It's in the ASP at the bottom under Production Info or something such. I think you could just run the updater. According to http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 that is the latest update that could be needed, depending on model. You might want to check it to find out. The list is intended for OS X but it's applicable if you are only using OS 9.x I've found information on the Apple website that will help me max out the RAM, and install an AirPort card in the iBook. What about installing a larger HD? Is that user do-able? Any limitations on size? I was thinking of 60 - 80 GB. 80 or maybe 100Mb is available. This is one of the hardest upgrades to do on any Mac (8500 memory is child's play in comparison). I counted about 60 screws that needed to be removed (and put back in). It will depend on the model but most are probably similar. There are several take apart guides on the web. I would print one out then use double sided tape to tape each screw in position as I removed it. I kept all the screws in order but even then it was hard to locate all the screw holes. -- Clark Martin Redwood City, CA, USA Macintosh / Internet Consulting I'm a designated driver on the Information Super Highway -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... The woohoo was short lived. After begining to load the essentials, printer driver...and doing a restart...I had to run some errands so the PB goes into sleep mode, and when I come home I can't wake it up...I have tried a force quit I know, no go. Is there a better force quit I wanted to pop the battery out, but don't know how...so there it sits blank/black face waiting for the battery to run down. for pete's sake... disgruntled with a Lombard, OS 9.1 Wiggled the connections, reloaded, reset, held my mouth just right woohoo internet ...once again thanks so much to everyone for the help -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
