Re: Looking for an Airport Card

2005-04-12 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
I did some experiment on older Macs:
please have a look at:
homepage.mac.com/bengi
You'll learn something on WiFi PC cards, including a link to a great
site, and how to flash a 40 bit wep (silver) card to 128 bit wep
(gold)!

If you need WPA you must look for a card bus WiFi card which will
work on any PowerBook from the Wallstreet, with the right software.

It's true, it wouldn't matter for that use, but if it
were put in in the reverse order, a tech looking at
one end might think it was a crossover cable, not
checking the other end.
And if it was just put together in any old order, a
tech who noticed the scramble would have to examine
the other end minutely to see that it would work for a
regular (non-crossover and correctly constructed)
ethernet cable.

There's something to be said for consistency...though
what, I don't know.

I chose to not install OS 9 on my PowerBook. I still have both 9 and X
on my iMac, but I never need any of my classic applications anymore. I
decided last summer when I got my PowerBook to just not install 9 at
all.

Claire

Why don't you want Mac OS 9X to use in classic mode
on your Powerbook?
Thank seems the easy fix?

is my iBook screwed

2005-04-12 Thread patmurray
Sigh, the day I am off on holidays my faithful G3 iBook seems to have developed
terminal symptoms. The screen has developed thin horizontal black lines and
there is a ghosting effect going on at the same time. The whole computer is
frozen. I noticed this happened when I picked up the laptop and had gently
squeezed above and below as I was carrying it.
Please tell me it is something simple and that Apple will fix it !

Pat ;)

p.s. I can restart and it will work occasionally but the minute I touch it then
all hell breaks loose.

Orinoco Silver 802.11b PC Card
Product Description
>From the Manufacturer
The ORiNOCO 11b Client PC Card can be used anywhere to connect to 802.11b
Wi-Fi networks. The card provides 11 MBit/s operation in the 2.4 GHz
license-free frequency band. With superior radio performance and resilience
to radio interference, ORiNOCO has been proven to give the best 802.11b
range and throughput in the industry. The card also supports 802.11d global
roaming to simplify connecting at facilities world-wide. Offered in Silver
and Gold versions, the card is equipped with a choice of security levels to
protect your data: Silver with a 64-bit WEP key, or Gold with user
selectable 64- and 128-bit WEP keys. Both versions support ORiNOCO's WEP+
weak key Initialization Vector suppression technology to make the cards more
robust against security attacks. Both versions are upgradeable to Wi-Fi
Protected Access (WPA). Both Gold and Silver versions of the card are
furnished with a streamlined form factor and short antenna which makes it
easier to work in crowded spaces. The Gold version antenna includes a
built-in connector for an external Range Extender Antenna which improves
performance locations where it is difficult to 'see' an Access Point.

The hardware works quite well with Linux, The Mac, and Win2K, but the
product has been bounced around so much since Lucent's original release,
finding current drivers and documentation is a major undertaking.
Tech-support from its current owner doesn't respond to inquiries, and the
software for configuration suffers in comparison to other vendors, such as
Apple.

If you're into mucking around the web or newsgroups, you can get help- once
you get it to work, it does perform quite well.

Often times, as you may know, a particular product's quality among various
manufacturers is very similar, with any difference being more media hype
than actual performance. However, in certain cases (like with memory sticks
for example) the difference is drastic. Here is yet another case.
It's well known among the "techie" community that Orinoco's (either silver
or gold) are the best wireless cards, and by a wide margin. Their
performance is a drastic improvement over any other card, and as evidenced
in one of the ratings, this card allows you to use your computer/laptop in
places you wouldn't think possible. Hope this helps.

this is the URL:

TigerDirect has the Asante AL5403-XG 802.11G Cardbus 54MBPS adapter for 14.99.
If you order via TigerDirect through Amazon, it will save you a buck
on shipping. Based on the URL above, this card will work with the
Airport software in OSX.

Yes, I agree, the internal Airport card is preferred, but tough to beat $15.
Also, check www.expercom.com for original airport cards - both new and used.

hope this helps!

I got mine on ebay for $79 to include the shipping. That's about the

it now deal and usually get it for about $80 total with shipping I
think. It's worth the investment, believe me.

If you "google" around, you should be able to find some web sites that will
introduce you to HTML.

IMHO, one of the best, free application with a GUI editor is Composer, part

Sorry, no idea. I have been using Talk Now! From EuroTalk. I haven't used it

plays back your recording. I've learned about Rosetta Stone after purchasing

Clamshell LCD Compatibility

2005-04-12 Thread osx
Hello everyone,

I have placed a known working display from an indigo iBook into a blueberry
iBook (320 megs, 6 gig
HD, OS 9.2.2) that had a cracked screen. Now, at boot, I hear the normal chime,
the HD spins and the
computer seems to be running fine. But no video. If I power it down, and then
immediately restart, I see
the screen flicker for a moment then goes black. I have checked all of the
connections and switched
out the inverter board but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Headset problems

2005-04-12 Thread Peter Saint James

I'm experiencing trouble using a headset for a language program. I'm
trying to determine whether the problem is with the program, with the
headset, or with the computer. I suspect the headset, but I'm not
sure.

The program is Rosetta Stone. I'm using an economical, no-name USB
headset. I have a Aluminum Powerbook running OS X 10.3.8 with a gig of
ram.

The problems:
--Sometimes the computer slows way down. The disk drive stalls,
stops and starts.

--It records my voice slow and plays it back at regular speed,
making me sound like Alvin the Chipmunk. This denies me benefit of the
program's analysis of my pronounciation.

I have tried a different headset which uses IMic. I still get the
voice distortion problem but not usually the other.

I have more than one of these programs. Some run in classic, one in
OS X. The ones in classic seem to exhibit the second symptom while the
one in OS X seems to show the first.

These things don't seem to happen when using the built-in mic, but
that's useless since all it picks up is the noise of the computer.

Any ideas? Anyone using Rosetta Stone or some other program and
having similar problems?

Re: Apple Security Update (2005-003): PB crash!

2005-04-12 Thread Deaner Lawless
Curious . . was the 512 module recommended by the manufacturer for
both machines?

dklj
On Apr 12, 2005, at 11:39 AM, Francesco sciacca wrote:
thanks for all the suggestions. After way too long down time, it turns
out
that the 512 RAM module I has added appears to be the culprit. Disk
turned
out to be fine, checked with SMARTD. Replacing the original 256 MB
module
restored stability.

I'm puzzled as the 512 module is a 512mb PC133 SO-DIMM CAS3 pulled
from a
iBook G3 (in which it works very well) and this is exactly the kind of
RAM
used by the PB G4 1GHz. It has also exactly the same labels on it as
the
original 256 sticks, it looks the same, same brand, except for being
sligthly shorter in height. I'm not sure if this is to be considered
3rd
party RAM? It has also worked with no problems since I installed it,
just
until all hell broke loose with the latest software updates.

So the message here is for those attempting to up their RAM without
being
robbed by Apple: be very careful. I'm not sure whether it's the OS or
the
machine hardware responsible for this pickyness about RAM, either way
it's
highly irritanting (to me at least).

cheers and thanks again for the help,
gianfranco
I had a similar experience on an older PB about a month ago. Stability
was good before I increased the RAM. Very poor stability with the new
RAM. Stability returned with the original chips. As it turned out the
backward compatibility as shown on the packaging was wrong.

It is also possible that the iLife installation CD is corrupted or
has
been
damaged. Did you had any 3rd party memory in that PowerBook? Is this
the
original hard disk? What Titanium model is this? When rebooting from
the
system install disk, did you make sure that no peripheral were
connected?
Specially USB peripherals, like mouse and/or keyboard?

port, so you need to get a localtalk to ethernet adapter. Then you can
connect it to an ethernet switch or even into a wireless base station.
Some basestations don't handle appletalk though, so be aware of that
issue. You'll need to be sure to activate appletalk in the network
panel of your macs to use it though. It'll work great. I use mine all
the time. It's a bit slow, but otherwise is a workhorse.

If this printer has an Ethernet port, then you can just put it on your
network with an Ethernet switch or hub.
But, since I think this model doesn't have any network-port, then you
will
have to connect it to your Pismo, then use OS X to share this printer
over
your network. If your Pismo is not running OS X, then you have 2
choices:
wait for Tiger on April 29th, buy it and install it on your Pismo, or
buy
another network-ready printer. Your new computer will only run OS X so
if
your Pismo is currently any flavor of the old OS 9, you won't be able
to
share it with your new PowerBook.

Oups! After reading my reply, I realize that you might not even be able to
connect the printer to your Pismo. Since I think this printer has only
serial connection, I'm thinking that you might not even be able to use it
with your Pismo. Sure, you could buy a Serial-to-USB adapter, but I'm not
sure this old printer would be worth the cost and the trouble to get it
hooked to your Pismo. FYI, I found a used LaserWriter 16/600PS on eBay a few
months ago for $80. This printer has built-in Ethernet (actually, it has a
FriendlyNet kind of connector, so you need a FriendlyNet adaptor, also
available for about $5 on eBay), and the printer is fully supported under OS
X. There is no need to share it from one computer since the printer is
always available on the network. Other printers with some kind of Ethernet
connection would work as well.

Re: Photoshop freeze on save

2005-04-12 Thread Deaner Lawless
Just launch FontBook and disable your user account fonts. If the
problem goes away them it is one of the fonts you disabled. Then go
back and half the list. Repeat until you narrow it down to the
conflicting font. Apply this process to the "Computer" fonts if needed.
Be careful of the fonts needed by the Apple apps i.e. Mail,
AddressBook, Safari, etc.

Go to versiontracker.com and look for a font utility. See if you can

Try

I vaguely remember there being a problem with a times font that was

Enabling Encryption On PC Card

2005-04-12 Thread Bob
I ran into a different pothole over the weekend. I wanted to log onto
an encrypted DSL modem with my Wallstreet II which uses an Orinoco
Classic Gold PC card (8022.11b). The card allows WEP encryption.
However, I am using it with the Apple (OS 8.6/9.x) Airport drivers.

I know I can enable WEP encryption via the Orinoco drivers, but as
mentioned above, that's not what I'm using. And the two types of
drivers conflict, so it's an either/or situation. I can only have one
or the other loaded, not both as the same time.

I really don't want to have to stop change drivers and reboot
whenever I need to log onto a WEP WAP. Is there a way to do so with
the Apple Airport software (v. 2.0.4)?

Thanx,

Bob

Re: Apple Security Update (2005-003): PB crash!

2005-04-12 Thread Francesco sciacca
thanks for all the suggestions. After way too long down time, it turns out
that the 512 RAM module I has added appears to be the culprit. Disk turned
out to be fine, checked with SMARTD. Replacing the original 256 MB module
restored stability.

I'm puzzled as the 512 module is a 512mb PC133 SO-DIMM CAS3 pulled from a
iBook G3 (in which it works very well) and this is exactly the kind of RAM
used by the PB G4 1GHz. It has also exactly the same labels on it as the
original 256 sticks, it looks the same, same brand, except for being
sligthly shorter in height. I'm not sure if this is to be considered 3rd
party RAM? It has also worked with no problems since I installed it, just
until all hell broke loose with the latest software updates.

So the message here is for those attempting to up their RAM without being
robbed by Apple: be very careful. I'm not sure whether it's the OS or the
machine hardware responsible for this pickyness about RAM, either way it's
highly irritanting (to me at least).

cheers and thanks again for the help,
gianfranco

Hi Kristina,\
Now that I know what you are using I opened 9.1 in one of my computers
to remember and check the settings. To make Netscape open when you
click the links in your emai, do the following: Go to the apple menu
and open *control panels* and navigate down to *Internet* control
panel and open. Scroll across to the *Web* tab and open. Look down at
the bottom of the panel and you'll see *Default Web Browser*... change
the setting to Netscape. Just scroll down till you see it. While you
have that panel open you can make sure some of your other settings are
correct. Open up the *E-mail* tab. Make sure that your account
settings are correct, ie: user id, incoming and outgoing mail servers
and password. At the bottom of that panel you can select the email
application that you want to use. Close the panel and choose to save
the changes.

I didn't know that you were using OS9 when I mentioned Safari. It is
free but only works with OSX.

The control panel changes should fix the above.

Open Netscape. I don't know what version you have... I only have
"Netscape Communicator 4.8" which I don't use anymore. Find Netscape
*preferences*, mine are under the *Edit" menu. When you get the prefs
open you should see a whole list of things. Find *Identity* and make
sure the setting are correct. You don't have to fill in all the stuff
in that panel. Just make sure that your name or nickname and email
address is correct. Then find *Mail Servers* this is the important
panel. Make sure that the *Outgoing mail (SMTP) server* has the
correct info... the same that you set up in your Internet control
panel in system control panels. And at the top of that same panel make
sure that *incoming mail server* is correctly set. This should enable
your sending emails from your Netscape App. Hope that this helps.

I have had issues with ATM in the past and found that disabling it made the

Thanks for the response to my ??? I am sorry I wasn't clear about what I am
running...I am running OS 9.1 and my email program is Outlook Express...I'd
like it to be compatible with Netscape, so they work togeter...a posted link
embedded in the text of a messages automatically opens/jumps to netscape the
browser on this machine, because it works with PayPal...and Internet
Explorer doesn't.

You mention Safari...is that free?
and if I didn't want to add another program to my symbiotic mac enviornment
and wanted to get what I had to work...

then I still have these questions.

OS9.1 whatever the current mac Netscape 7 is...

> Are talking about sending web mail from a Netscape page?
sending from Netscape's email function... You select it from a netscape page
and it takes you to a Outlook Express email looking page and does most of
what OE does on my 8.6 upstairs with compatible email and web browser.

Go to versiontracker.com and look for a font utility. See if you can find
one that will let you check for corrupt fonts during the trial period. Try
deleting/deactivating the corrupt fonts.

I vaguely remember there being a problem with a times font that was corrupt
as installed by one application I believe the font was "Times RO".

I have a similar Mirotek horror story. In fact, I was so displeased with the
'support' that I eventually got dramatic. For years I've joked with my A+
certification class that the ultimate solution for a wonky PC is to throw it
out the third floor window. So I did

Meanwhile our tech specialist, who generally ticks me off with her
cluelessness, bought a boatload of HP 3970 scanners. The darn thing just
works. I hate HP drivers, I no longer trust HP printers, 'HP support' has
become an oxymoron. But this scanner just plugs along doing what I ask it to
do. Bought one for home and it has performed just as flawlessly.

perhaps not. I know I read about this somewhere but I also DON'T remember

if I can't find anyone with the same problem.
