Re: Tiger version
Is Apple still selling 10.4? I am getting anxious to try Tiger, but I have this policy about always waiting until at least the .1 comes out before jumping in. Any news/rumors about 10.4.1? I heard QuickTime 7 was buggy. Is that because of QT or Tiger? Waiting, Claire OS X (Tiger) 10.4.1 has been out some time now. 10.4.2 is seeded and due for public release any minute now. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Hello All, I have a Lombard 366 with a bad key board and a Pismo 500 that will not power up at all. I want to swap out the KBs if possible. Hello All, I have a Lombard 366 333 ? with a bad key board and a Pismo 500 that will not power up at all. Pull the PRAM battery and main battery and try again. I want to swap out the KBs if possible. Does any one have any idea if it is, or know that it is not possible? They are identical on the keys BUT the plugs to the logic board are completely different. Also pc66 RAM vs. pc100 RAM; are they interchangable? Well you can run 100 in a machine that needs 66, in general. Some machines like Wallstreet and Lombard can only address low density chips so a 256 may show as a 128. -- Best wishes Malcolm Cornelius - The Powerbook Fanatic http://www.pbfanatic.co.uk -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Hello all, I have heard this now from more than one source. I was under the impression that the rumor that Apple was going to eventually leave the PowerPC architecture altogether was just a rumor. Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!
This is no longer a rumor, if you don't believe it check out Apple's web site and look under their news articles. You can also check out the keynote speech for the WWDC and hear Steve Jobs say it himself. The iMac list and G-list have gone nuts with this topic, with tens to hundreds of posts on it a day. Opinions vary on this, but the fact remains, it's happening, and you can't stop it. I'm sorry to make this so blunt, but I figured you wanted a straight answer without beating around the bush. hope I didn't cause any offense. Print Problem from Pismo
I once again need some help. I am using 2 Pismos etherneted to a G4 QS with shared printing. I am using 10.3.9 and the 2 printers are connected to the G4. Problem is when I try to print from either Pismo the printer utility (Epson 820) gives the message unable to lookup host 'admins-computer.local'-un I run the G4 under user name admin so I assume that is the reference to admins, however I can print from the G4 without any problems. I switched to a different user account with same result. That is, it would print from G4 but same message on both Pismos. The ethernet connection seems OK at least networking and internet work as usual. This is a new development even tho I have always had some difficulty getting shared printing to work consistently. I don't think I have changed anything. My only thought is to reinstall the printer software CD but don't see how that could make a difference. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The Pismo series (and later) PowerBooks have a hardware DVD decoder chip, while prior PowerBook models decoded using software. Hence, if no hardware DVD decoder chip, then system not supported. Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!
No disrespect intended, but where have you been all week. This is one of the biggest stories on the internet this week. Apple is moving to Intel. See news stories and Steve's speech at the WWDC It's a great move on Apple's part. It will allow Apple to effectively complete against Dell and other PC venders on price. It may not be the world's best processor, but it's hard to tell someone that an iBook running at 1.33 GHz for $1199 is better than a Dell Notebook running at 2 GHz or faster for $799 is better. Do the math, Apple made the right move. Aaron Willems On Sat, 11 Jun 2005 11:20:07 -0700 Zoltan Batiz [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello all, I have heard this now from more than one source. Re: powerbook g3 pismo battery problem
Have there been any responses to this yet? If so, then I apologize for bringing it up again. I have not seen any responses, so I'll give it shot. First, what is the age of your battery? I have/had two batteries for my Pismo and they both lasted just over four years (consecutive years, not sequential years). So if your battery is around that age, then it is probably done and just a case of bad timing. Both my batteries started the dying process while I was running 10.2. When I upgraded to 10.3 my batteries gave the same performance as with 10.2, which was continuously dying at a faster and faster rate and less charge up percentage and time with each charging session. I first noticed the weakening batteries when they would only charge to 80%. The OS X battery monitor was not always accurate, sometimes reporting 80% charge sometimes reporting 100% charge. I tried all the tricks and resets, nothing helped. The battery would get down to 20% then just jump straight to 0% and the Pismo would go to sleep. Now I am getting only about 40% charge on these batteries. So the behavior now is that when the battery gauge gets down to 40% it will then jump to 0% and the Pismo goes to sleep. I still keep a battery in the bay, in case of a power loss, so that I'll have about 20-30 minutes to close, quit, and shut down properly. A battery generally does not go from 100% charge down to 0% in an instant. Has your battery been weakening over time? My batteries seem to weaken in 20% steps (maybe as each cell in the battery fails and each cell in the battery is worth 20%?). If it did go from 100% to 0% charge, then the sensor in the battery itself has been triggered somehow and needs to be reset. That is done through Terminal and booting into Open Firmware. If you want to try that, then let me know and I will find the instructions for you. Here is how to check the stats of a battery using Terminal... Open Terminal (located in your applications utilities folder) and run the following command ioreg -l | grep -i IOBatteryInfo the response will look like this IOBatteryInfo = ({Capacity=4144,Amperage=1200,Current=160,Voltage=11431,Flags= 1090519175}) if it is not plugged into the wall, then the flags will equal a regular # like 4. A good Capacity number in my opinion is from 4000 to 4500. Running that just now on my Pismo returns a battery capacity of 402! Yikes! So my battery is only capable of 10% charge at this point. Also, here is a link to a web page that offers some good tips on battery life: http://www.enterprisej2me.com/blog/java/?postid=90. So I hope all that helps. Have a great day! Best regards, Scott g'day, the battery in my pismo (powerbook g3 firewire) has just died (m7318) and i wondered if it has anything to do with the recent os upgrade i performed (10.2 to 10.3)? everything was fine until i upgraded a couple of weeks ago and now it's as dead as a dodo. is this a strange coincedence or just a case of bad timing? are there any tests in os x i can perform to see if it has really died or if it's something else? i can't run apple's battery reset 2.0 as i no longer have classic on my machine due to storage constraints. i'm just about to buy a quicksilver (powermac g4) and can't really afford to replace the battery yet. does it matter if leave the battery left in the slot until i have sufficient funds to obtain a replacement or should i remove it completely? finally can anyone recommend a good replacement for the m7318 that holds around 5-6 hours of charge as most of the one's i've seen on the web only seem to last for 2-3 hours? cheers, simon 09/06 Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts. -- Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: IPOD
Check your iTunes preferences and look under iPod (I assume you're running OS X?). Make sure that the box that allows your iPod to be used in disk mode is not checked. Unless, of course you want to keep it in disk mode. If you keep it in disk mode, just unmount it like you would eject a CD- drag the iPod icon on your desktop to the trash, etc. you can also click the eject symbol next to your iPod in itunes. hope that helps, Brian On Jun 11, 2005, at 5:13 PM, Jim Dynes wrote: Hi all, I just bought a 20 gig Ipod and it updated as soon as I plugged it in Itunes says that the update is complete but the ipod says do not dis-connect. When it updated, it was updating the ipod software. The 2 things that will happen is it should or should have asked you if you wanted to transfer the music in iTunes to the iPod erasing anything that was already installed on it. If the battery needs to be recharged it would also do that. How long has it been charging? That can take some time and it's normal. Did it copy any files. Hi Dan, I haven't heard from you in a while. I guess your getting ready for the big move. A guy on the itunes list says to just dis-mount it so I am going to give that a try. You can see that happening in iTunes up where it shows what music is being played. Hey, they get them by the truckload for almost nothing and then force the students to purchase them for full retail-I should say rent them for the small fee of $500 each semester! Just another way for our Colleges to make some extra cash, so their Professors won't have to teach more than two hours a day. If you are a lowly Art Student, you then get an iBook for the same price and if you don't like it, transfer to another school. Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!
Apple is indeed going to start using Intel processors sometime in 2006. Check Apple's home page. Jobs made that announcement at the WWDC Keynote last Monday. However, there was no word about x86 architecture. Jobs only ever said (purposefully?) Intel processors, conspicuously not mentioning x86. Apple will continue to use PowerPC in the Pro model Macs into 2007 and possibly beyond, depending on IBM. Apple will be making computers based on CPUs from Freescale, IBM, as well as Intel starting in 2006. Unfortunately, IBM has abandoned PowerPC development for the purposes of Apple's computers. There is no way a current PPC 970 (G5) will work in a PowerBook, they are actually too hot for the current Power Mac, and IBM has refused to develop something cooler for Apple. Freescale is still working with the G4 chip, yet that really is not a long-term option for Apple. Apple does not want to be left hanging dead on the vine without a CPU to make computers with. I think this move has been in the works for quite some time. OS X has had an Intel version since day one, for five years. Remember, OS X is derived from NeXTStep, which was processor independent. Intel's new CEO is very pro-Mac and always compliments Apple, Macintosh, and Jobs in his speeches. Seems he has been courting Apple and Jobs for awhile. Intel does have a very good, and more importantly long-term, roadmap for chip development, especially for Macs mini, iMacs, iBooks, and PowerBooks. This will turn out to be very good for Apple and OS X come 2007. I think Intel has something new that may be used exclusively at first in Apple machines. Intel machines running OS X are already available to developers to start porting software. The process is actually much easier than the 68k - PPC and OS 9 - OS X transitions. This will be very good for Apple once the bumps are smoothed out. Best regards, Scott Hello all, I have heard this now from more than one source. I was under the impression that the rumor that Apple was going to eventually leave the PowerPC architecture altogether was just a rumor. Please tell me this isn't true. While this may not bother some Mac users, HALF of the reason I even use a Mac is due to the superior PowerPC architecture. Actually, as I'm gearing up to being one of those potentially highly paid Professors in the next year or so, I can attest first-hand to the fact that money from the forced sale of IBM Thinkpads at my school does not in any way see the light of day in anyone in my department's paycheck. I would look first to the Chancellor, then the Provosts and Vice Provosts, then the Deans, and even various lower-level administrators for excessive salaries due to fascist computer policies. Since it's a publicly funded university you can check it out yourself--the exact amount of everyone's salaries is publicly available. Meanwhile, there is *one* guy on the whole of campus that I can go to if I have trouble with my Apple product, plus the only discount I get is the one Apple itself provides me. Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!
You bring up an excellent point- college professors, while some can be quite fascist-like in their classrooms, are not particularly paid well. Generally speaking, a person with a PHD will do better in the open market than in a school. What's more, they do not make policy. Odds are they receive no benefit from the schools implementing such policies that step on the rights and choices of the students. brand new iBook G4 with key/lettering coming off
Hi there, I have only had my iBook G4 14 since May 10th, 2004. I have used it every day but predominantly for email - not a ton of typing by any means. Already the letter T and S are starting to wear off (peel off?) of those keys... what the heck? Is this a thing with the iBooks? I have typed a lot more on other keyboards (laptop and otherwise, all Macs) without this happening. Anything I could or should do about it? I'd rather not take a Sharpie marker and write them in... but I also don't want all the other letters/etc coming off! (I'm a decent typist, but I need to see what's where sometimes... :-) ) Thanks, Michelle Herd [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I have typed a lot more on other keyboards (laptop and otherwise, all Macs) without this happening. Hi Michelle, Do you live near an Apple store ? If so, take the iBook in and let them have a look at it. If not, contact Applecare and advise them of what is happening. There is no way that the letters should be wearing off already. Whatever you do, do NOT write on the keys. Your iBook is still under warranty so you should be able to get some resolution from Apple. Amber -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I am having the same problem. Also, As I am typing I get contextual menus popping up. Jim On Jun 11, 2005, at 6:50 PM, Michelle wrote: Hi there, I have only had my iBook G4 14 since May 10th, 2004. Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?!
I've wondered if any of the people who are chiming on on this topic watched the keynote address? Though Apple is switching to Intel, is it going to be the 586 or Pentium family of processors? Steve Jobs never said anything about that.for all we know it could be a whole different processor. These new Intel based Macs are still going to be running OS X. Do you think Apple would use Windows? To my experience, Apple products have always been TOP QUALITY. I doubt that anything with their brand name on it will be anything less that what they previously made. Being an eternal optimist, I'm certain Apple will continue to make quality computers that 'just work' as they always have. I will continue to be an Apple customer for ALL of my future computer needs. I do not see that changing. Then comes its low reliability compared to my Powerbook or even my iBook-What a piece of junk! It is always difficult to tell the uninformed anything and that is what the PC world is. Tom it's hard to tell someone that an iBook running at 1.33 GHz for $1199 is better than a Dell Notebook running at 2 GHz or faster for $799 is better. Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architecture?!
Actually they allow my daughter to have the incredible opportunity of purchasing the two year old laptop from the school after she has already paid $2000 for a $799 computer at $500 per semester. They she gets a new one and the cycle starts over. They also ban un-approved laptops in the classroom and only their computers may be used. My cousin is a full professor at the main University in my state and he only teaches two hours each week, while the rest of his time is spent doing research, so that may be where some of the excess cash is being used. My Fellow PowerBook-philes, Dude! Where does your daughter go to school??? Holy cow. Is this college or high school? America? Europe? Somewhere else? I hope it is a private school -- we'd be all over a public school doing this in my state. They'd have so many lawsuits from so many corners before they even thought of it ... well... And as for the fascism of Universities ... have not really experienced that myself. My State's flagship University is not too shabby on that front. Not so hot at some others, though. Like having a falling out with its Alumni fund-raising foundation Oops. Sincerely, Pacer the Loon P.S. My father is a Professor at one of the larger public Us and he does quite a bit more than research. Your cousin is lucky. Wait till he gets picked to be head of a department or some other admin+teaching+research-or-you-lose-your-tenure position. Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architecture?!
Winona State University (a public university here in Minnesota) has a program that bans use of any non-winona owned laptop on their campus. In other words, public schools are not immune to this behavior. Brian On Jun 12, 2005, at 12:29 AM, Pacer wrote: My Fellow PowerBook-philes, Dude! Where does your daughter go to school??? Holy cow.
