The iBook doesn't have SCSI so he can't boot the WS in target disk

Could he boot the iBook in firewire mode and use a firewire PC card to
mount it on the wallstreet? We'd need to find him a firewire card for
the wallstreet.

Could he connect the two computers with an ethernet cable?
It would be slow but we could do it with existing ports.
Do you need a crossover cable or a regular one?
Any links to tutorials?

Thanks

It's perfectly doable using an Ethernet cable. If the iBook is a
fairly new model, you can use a regular cable (recent macs use auto-
sensing ports). For older models, you'd have to use a crossover cable
or a hub.

The firewire pccard would be faster, but since you don't have one
already I'd say go ahead with ethernet.
Make sure you turn file sharing on. If you need more info just ask
here or email privately.

Bruce,

I completely agree, I just was trying to say that I could get the same
crappy service from Sony (personal experience) and Dell (as I have
heard, confirmed by you.) It worries me however, because this can be
very dtrimental to our favorite computer manufacturer. I will draw
conclusions as suggested by David and definitely not shop at an Apple
store again, but what will a switcher do?

Thanks all for your responses, the Apple reseller is a great suggestion,
however they are not that easy to find these days thanks to Apple
driving them out of business (my old Apple reseller quit). I will try
Firewire mode as well ...

I had some of the same cust-ser problems when SBC disconnected my DSL
service (how a call to ask what my contract period was translates into
a request by a non-existant spouse to disconnect still is a mystery.)

I've found over the years that if after the 2nd or 3rd attempt of
gettng a cust.ser rep to understand what you're talking about, ask for
their Supervisor. If they're in a meeting then ask for the
Supervisor's supervisor. If that doesn't work, ask for their name and
ID# and the email address of the President of their division.

I ended up talking with an assistant at the Chairman of the Board's
office. Not only was my DSL rehooked up 2 weeks earlier than they
told me it could be, I got multiple month's credit on the bill as well
as the lower rate i was told I couldn't qualify for. (there were a
LOT of mistakes they made gettimg me rehooked, but it all worked out.)
Remember--you're the customer and you have a right to ask to talk to
someone with both hemispheres of their brains communicating with the
other. :)

Besides being a mail order vendor, they are also a local shop (if you

I wouldn't rate it disaster, but improvements could be made.

The stores are made to sell things, which they do well.
Service is a sideline and not well done. Stores also feed the Apple
cult idea. It's the place to be, to hang around with the other
Appleheads, to feel special, etc. The one near me is always full of
teenagers. They are made to feel at home there more than in some of
the general retailers.

As to the service aspect, there is plenty of room for
improvement. And, yes, they are pissing people off. Computer users
get excited when computers can do something half a nanosecond faster,
but they have to wait at least two hours to get service at an Apple
store. That's stupid. Apple advertises that one can make an
appointment in advance; they neglect to mention that's an extra
hundred bucks.

It's insulting to deal with people whose job title is
genius but who give the word genius a bad name. Some don't have
common sense or service sense. Seems to me a better name would be
Service Provider. That might give them a better orientation toward
customer service.

In my neighborhood an independent Apple retailer is about a
block away from an Apple store. The service manager at the
independent is a bit gruff, but at least he usually knows what he's
doing. The independent is a good shop, and the Apple store makes
them look even better.

Re: 12 Powerbook G4: an AppleCare and AppleStore assessment

2005-10-10 Thread Tobias Strohe
Wow,

I didn't mean to cause a cleric fight here. I think it is important to
remember that we all like Apple products, many of us have used them for
years with great satisfaction. To me the recent events were just very
surprising, given that I have always had (and bragged about to exclusive
Windows users) great service experiences with Apple (starting with the
PB 5300 extended repair program and the generally superior manufacturing
quality as wel as a recent occurance with one of my iPods - I still have
a few Apple IIs and a MacTV as well as 2 Luggables I keep for fun and
they run! - My SO banned them to a storage room, but nonetheless ;-)).
The Sales function of the Apple Stores is quite clearly successful, but
customer retention will become more important as time goes by and that
is where I (and others here) see the major deficits. I also mentioned
that Apple Care phone support is no longer something to write home
about. It's just like the old car metaphor: Make sure it runs like a
Honda/Acura (insert other favorite Japanese brand here) - Harddrives
failing after 1.5 years is not really acceptable - but if there is a
problem: Fix problems immediately without bunches of red tape.
Especially since Apple is still (at least perceivedely) more pricey than
your run of the mill PC. Design and ease of use alone will not convince
people over the longrun. (Wintel has been making strides here - I am
writing this on my work Sony Vaio, but I will try to convince our office
to switch to Macintel in due time, if I can figure out a solution for
our Windows-only CAD software).

Thanks again for everybody's input,
Tobias (in Denver Colorado, unfortunately somewhat away from Smalldog,
but I have bought from them before).

Unbelievable. I've been in retail off and on over the years, and that
isn't something that I could ever see being condoned. Do I smell a
sabateur?

Sadly, *nothing* will change without a bit of work. Call the manager and
complain (I'll assume the jerk's name is on your receipt/invoice).
Follow-up with a letter, then email Head Office, referencing both phone
call and letter. This email would seem to cover most all of what you want
to say...

Good luck.

and I was up and running that very day, all for free (yeah, I bought
the DiskWarrior but it's not like they charged me for looking at my
 way-out-of-warranty laptop).

However, fast forward two years. I finally convinced my SO to
switch. We go to buy a bright shiny new Powerbook, i.e., to drop
$1,500-$1,700. I have never been treated so rudely. The salesperson
tried to upsell Applecare (which we planned to buy, but not right
then, thank you). I mentioned that since it was available throughout
the time of the original warranty we were going to hold off because
this was a big purchase for us. He then made this face like, Well,
if you're willing to risk it, I hope nothing bad happens, as if
somehow we were at some additional risk by not purchasing Applecare
at the time of purchase. Please. But the worst thing was what
happened next. It took him a really long time to get the Powerbook
from the back and when he finally arrived, I asked if the Airport
extreme card was there. (I know they're stock, but I had a friend
who had gotten home and discovered that it wasn't there). He looked
at me like he hated me, raised the box up to my face, tapped his
finger on the side where the spec labels are, and glared at me.
Didn't say a word, didn't say Yes, of course, Yes, they're stock,
Yes, if there's any problem you can bring it back, Yes, would you
like me to open it and double-check?, nothing. Just tapped the box
about 6 inches from my face. I have never been treated like that
before, not at BestBuy, not at CompUSA, not at Circuit City, hell,
not even at Wal-Mart. And *especially* not when I was spending well
over a grand. I mean, it's not like I was buying a USB hub and asked
if the adapter was really there.

So after that, I am really, really soured on the Apple store. I
think Apple needs to regroup and refocus regarding exactly what they
want the Apple store to be. Right now it seems like it's a
storefront no different than the other retailers I mentioned, except
that it happens to sell only one brand.

Now set Appletalk to the ethernet port on the Wallstreet. Share the

Now, on the iBook, make sure Appletalk is active on the network

Now you should be able to see the Wallstreet if you click on Go

Re: Lombard issues

2005-10-10 Thread GalBros
Sorry to hear about your problems with your Lombard.

From my experiences with Lombards (I have a 400mhz) the feeezing and
non-booting could be from a faulty processor.

Is there some kind of pattern to the non-functioning? When it cannot boot at
all; is that only after it crashes after it starts up freezes?

It sounds like you're thinking it could be the OS; I think it may be a faulty
processor card, and/or maybe an overheating one. Would you happen to have /
access to an extra Lombard processor?

You could try disabling the L2 cache with some third party software
like CPU director. Or, try running the unit with a fan blowing on
the CPU heatsink directly.

is that what you meant?

There are a bunch of Mac users in the Region tho I don't seen any user
groups listed for the entire northern part of Indiana (I'm surprised
there isn't one in Mich.City or South Bend). Try the IL
listing--there's 3 listed in Chicago. (Our user group listed there,
the Aurora Area Apple Core is the only all-Apple II user group still
in existance in IL :) )

Later..Howard

If this is a CPU-heat problem (failing CPU), lift the keyboard off
the CPU cover and blow the fan on top of the CPU cover. This will
coll the CPU to the maximum extent.

In my experience a failed L2 cache will announce itself with a pop up
message on startup, something like:

The built in memory test has detected a problem with cache memory.
Please contact a service technician for assistance.

It never stopped the computer from starting (once you acknowledged the
message) and it seemed to run fine without the cache.
I expect it might have been slower but never did any benchmarks to
check.

Best of luck.
