Re: European Powerbooks

2005-04-14 Thread Bruce Mitchell
No transformer needed, just adapter plugs. You can get a world-wide adapter
kit at apple.com - or just buy an adapter in whatever country you land,
which is how I built up my collection. They're easy to find at any drug
store or hardware store in any country, even at the airport.

No, as I use my own form of 'shorthand'. In any case, the presence of a

I'm interested in your advice on how to protect one's laptop in airports.

My main strategy has been to carry my PowerBook in a regular case that does
not look like a laptop carrier. And I never take my eyes off it, even when
it has to go through the x-ray machine; I don't allow anyone to rush me or
distract me from paying attention.

someone by means of the symbol to the correct key the first time, if not in

Re: chooser problem

2004-07-29 Thread Bruce Mitchell

I have had this problem occasionally. It is almost always resolved by a
re-start. I say almost always because on a few occasions more than one
re-start was necessary before my Lombard PB recognized the printer.

No techie has ever been able to tell me why this happens.

No. Just a regular plug adapter, not a converter. The Mac has an internal
auto converter. I've traveled all over the world and never needed more than
a simple plug adapter. The power supply just plugs in to an adapter to
whatever plug is used by the host country.

Yes. It has happened to me and to my brother as well, usually when Apple has
done an across the board upgrade between the time you order and the time
they ship. Like they said, you lucked out, but it is one of the occasional

DO NOT use the hair dryer!

I had the same problem a couple of years ago and all went well with my
drying efforts until I used the hair dryer ‹ which proceeded to push some
droplets where they shouldn't go, causing a sudden crackle and pop,
accompanied by that acrid smell that goes with frying...

letting it air dry is best.

I'm kind of answering my own question here but why be sensitive

environment, but then that is what M$ has done all these years so...

Still ridiculous as one has full naming capability when handling the file.

Re: keycaps

2004-02-25 Thread Bruce Mitchell
This won't help your search for replacement keys, but the remedy for
preventing such wear from happening in future is to dab a bit of clear nail
polish over each letter when the computer is new. It won't be noticeable and
will preserve the lettering forever.

I do the same on the various lettered controls in every automobile I buy.

My Lombard also uses Li-on so that's what he was talking about.

Is there anyone else out there truly knowledgeable on this subject who can
advise us correctly?

Re: Buying Replacement Pismo Batteries: Experiences?

2004-02-06 Thread Bruce Mitchell
My Mac guru advises that it is wise not to keep a PB plugged in all the time
but instead let the battery run down fully at least every few weeks, that
doing so will actually enhance the life span of the battery. He seems to be
correct, as with every PB I have owned I have had spare batteries for the
other bay which get little use and they always die long before the main
battery which I let wear down periodically.

Re: GPS Software (again)

2004-02-06 Thread Bruce Mitchell
I don't think it was anything you did. It comes through as a split link,
where the bit on the second line is not underlined so is not actually read
as part of the link when you click on it.

However, I found that cutting and pasting did not do the trick either. What
worked was to click the link, let it go to the 404 error in the browser,
then cut and paste adding the second line on the browser, click again...
only then did it work for me.

Thanks for the posting... great idea! I have sent it along to the Mac_X list
and every Mac user I know.

BTW, another reason is to have the GPS tracking software available on the
Mac. I had to get a PC laptop to have that capability.

Re: [OT] Latin

2004-02-05 Thread Bruce Mitchell
As a youth I was taken to meet Jimmy Hoffa by an older friend. They had
grown up together and worked together in their youth. They had gone their
separate ways in terms of business but remained friends. I saw the sign on
his desk, in Latin, and asked what it meant. He replied: "Don't let the
bastards wear you down." The English stuck with me but not the Latin.

The friend who took me was a successful businessman who told me that no
matter what anyone said, he thought Jimmy Hoffa was a great man, that Hoffa
had taken teamsters from being treated like scum by the employers and turned
the job into a way to make a good living. My friend believed it would never
have happened but for Hoffa.

Thanks. I thought of that but it failed on repeated attempts. Just now I

I'm looking forward to Mac GPS software, as I sure hate having to use a PC,
which really means I rarely use the GPS.

What is the translation of the latin? Is it that old Jimmy Hoffa saw "Don't

Please give a bit of info of about what the Mac signup is for.

Curious how institutions have such difficulty listening to ideas from
outside the confines of their box. Isn't that what Xerox Parc did?

Don't give up. Your technology sounds worth pushing. Perhaps you might try
again ‹ maybe do an end run around the 'They' at Apple and somehow get to
Jobs, who seems to be always open to and indeed in search of new thinking.

Re: usb hub

2003-08-02 Thread Bruce Mitchell
This subject is covered in the current issue of the Voice newsletter of the
MacValley User Group, which ran an article about the various problems that
can be caused by USB devices and inadequate hubs. All the group experts
agreed that the best USB hub by far is the Per-Tech 7-Port Hubmaster, "...a
solidly built, if extremely ugly*, piece of equipment, and is to USB hubs
what Tripp-Lite is to power strips... I will speculate that the Per-Tech
succeeds where others fail due to the fact that it's got a very large
internal power supply to stabilize voltage on all devices..."

www.pertch.net

There was also a recent story about Per-Tech at www.macintouch.com which led
to a 4-fold increase in demand so "...please be patient... Quality can't be
rushed!"

Really. Can you provide a URL or phone number or other means of accessing
such a system?

I ask because before posting my earlier respons I double-checked with the
local police department and they advised there is no national serial number
registration system available to the public.

Re: Sudden battery failure

2003-07-03 Thread Bruce Mitchell
Sure wish they had told me this when I bought a spare with my Lombard. I
kept it in the travel case and only used it when actually traveling out of
town, so it got very little use, unlike the main battery which got regular
use when traveling locally. Just recently I tried to use the spare and it
was dead as a doornail; tried the freezer thing but no luck.

Re: Grammarian

2003-07-02 Thread Bruce Mitchell
Thanks Sid, for your evaluation from experience, which makes Grammarian
sound worth having, as I thought perhaps it might be from the description on
the website. Not that expensive if it's that much better than MS.

Deliberate use of 'improper' grammar is what I meant in referring to being
of the Winston Churchill school; the old story of him writing a speech which
a minor aide sent back with grammar corrections, to which he responded by
red-penciling in the margin "this is just the sort of thing with which I
will not up put!" or something like that. I may not have the wording exactly
right but you get the drift. If you have ever read anything of Churchill,
who was a most prolific and compelling writer, it is hard to imagine anyone
having nerve enough to 'correct' his writing.

This product looks interesting. Never heard of it before so checked out the
link.

What is your evaluation? I ask because I stopped using the grammar check in
Word a long time ago, as it cited nearly every damn sentence I wrote and
posed the most ridiculous suggestions.

I am not a strict grammarian (no pun intended) but rather more of the
Winston Churchill school, yet there are times when I think I could use some
help.

If anyone has experience with Grammarian, I'd like to hear what you think of
it.

Re: PowerBook 12" Battery

2003-06-06 Thread Bruce Mitchell
My experience with Apple has been very very good. The time from the call to
Apple, receiving the shipping box and then receiving the goods is usually 3
days max.

The rule of thumb here is "Never take No for an answer less than three
times". Just like the 411 information operator, if a customer service rep
doesn't give you what you want, call back a short while later and talk to
another customer service rep. In my experience, it works a very high
percentage of the time.

Re: OSX on Lombard + RAM max

2003-06-04 Thread Bruce Mitchell
So I need a boost from 320MB. Which leads me to another question: I've seen
a lot of postings about seemingly different types of RAM on this and/or
other Mac groups but understand none of it.

Forgive my ignorance, for I am not a tech person, but is there a particular
type of RAM I should get? Is there a difference in quality from one brand to
the next? Etc.?

Also, does processor speed have anything to do with OSX functioning well? My
Lombard is 333MHz.

I love the Lombard and am currently jazzed about inheriting a used 20GB HD,
a big boost from the 4GB that came with (and from which I am constantly
dumping things in a desperate attempt to keep that recommended 10% clear...)

Not just icky but unstable as a long-term storage medium, or so I'm told.

I had a bad experience with floppies deteriorating to worthlessness, so
bypassed Zips and went directly to CD's.

I just received the info below from the MacValley user group newsletter.
Does SuperScrubber take care of the problem described in this thread?

SuperScrubber

Getting rid of an old computer? You know it's smart to shred paper
documents, but what about a computer that's filled with electronic
documents? Deleting files, emptying the trash, or even reformatting your
hard drive doesn't really erase the files. SuperScrubber does. Protect your
email, financial figures, client correspondence, address book, student
records, business plans, medical records, graphics, and more. Use
SuperScrubber to permanently erase all the files and data on your hard drive
or partition. Make SuperScrubber a part of your personal and business
security plans. It's easy to use, it's bargain priced, it's the smart thing
to do.

Retail Price: $29.99 (US), MUG Discount: 20%

What is "the $300-a-shot fix-all deal"? is is just for TiBooks? where can
one get the info on it?

The power, no, because I had gone into the bathroom where the dryer was. It
is possible I did not think to remove the battery.

This is why I have a hard and fast rule of no food or drink anywhere near
our computers ‹ not even in the same room. Since I don't like to eat at my
desk, it's not a problem for me; others who may be offended just have to
learn to live with it. It's not worth the risk.

Am I ever glad you brought this up. A couple of years ago I came home during
a rainstorm to find a tiny, nearly infinitesimal roof leak occurring in just
one corner of the house, just the slightest intermittent drip, drip, drip
every so often ‹ directly over the keyboard of my PowerBook. Panicked, I cut
the power, removed the battery, opened it up and carefully soaked up the
water, just barely touching the droplets to let them absorb into Q-tips and
paper towels. All seemed well, but for a bit of water in an inaccessible
corner or two, so I got out the hair dryer, set it on low and let it blow
gentle breezes from afar, thinking to dry out what little water was left.
Immediately, sizzle pop poof and an acrid smell, and my heart sank as I knew
the PB was murdered dead at my own hand. I assumed I had inadvertently
pushed some drops of water around to places they should not have been let to
make contact. It frankly never occurred to me that the hair dryer itself
could do damage. Never again!

The upside was that, the cost of repair being out of proportion to what the
thing was worth, I was forced to buy a new PowerBook. Though I could ill
afford it at the time and had to buy on credit (ugh! I hate paying
interest), immediately I fell in love with the new model and forgot my
earlier affair with the damaged goods.

All good questions. I don't know the answers. Maybe the claim went well
because the event happened outside the home, there were two parties
involved, and the damage was caused by someone other than the owner of the
laptop? I really don't know. Are there any insurance people in the group who
could provide answers?

Re: Beerbook/Spill Damage

2002-11-22 Thread Bruce Mitchell
Been following the thread and thought I should share this story. My brother
hangs out in coffee shops, writing on his laptop and engaging customers in
political discussions whenever possible, working to change the world one
mind at a time.

About a year ago he was pounding away at his PB5300 when a friend sat down
at his table with a cup of coffee which promptly got knocked over, spilling
onto the keyboard. There was some initial tension between friends debating
who was responsible, my brother for bringing a fragile laptop into an
environment where it would be surrounded by liquids or the friend for not
being more careful.

Fortunately it didn't get out of hand. They decided that since coffee shops
are now wired for internet access customers should expect the presence of
laptops and act accordingly. The whole issue was resolved by the friend
submitting a claim on his homeowners insurance policy.

Now the really good part: It seems the insurance company method of valuation
is different for computers than it would be for furniture or a car, where
they pay only the current value of the item and argue about that. I don't
know what the value of a PB5300 is (I ditched mine for a Lombard about 3
years ago) ‹ but I know it ain't priced the same as a brand new high end
iBook. Yet that is exactly what the insurance company provided.

Result: my bro is in pig heaven. He has never bought a new computer - or
anything else - in his life; he kinda prides himself on getting old stuff
cheap and making it work better than it is supposed to, enjoys the challenge
of upgrading and all that. Being gifted with the then-latest and greatest
iBook in this fashion has given him a new lease on life, changed his whole
attitude, increased his sense of self-worth, made him a better writer and
sent him on a more fervent mission of effecting progressive political
change. He even bought new software.

So submit a claim to your insurance company and see what happens.
