Amber,
I am no expert, but any time I have software weirdness like you
describe, I go into Disk Utility and repair permissions. Have you tried
that recently?

Hi,

I am just wondering if any of you have had any problems with iDVD in
iLife 06. I was trying to burn a DVD project that I created in iMovie
and immediately after opening iDVD, got all these large black
boxes/patches all over my PB screen. They covered the menu bar and
over half of the screen.

I quit iDVD and opened again - same thing. Went into preferences and
moved the iDVD one to the desktop then restarted. Seemed okay but
then 5 minutes later when I was working on the project, the same
patches appeared.

I am not sure what to do at this point. Just wondered if anybody else
has had the same experience?

QTPro is easy, but not fast nor free. It also will take longer but
give a

smaller file.

iSquint is a free program which is under very active development. It
will
let you take much more control over the process and even will let you
batch

convert several files (which I tend to do overnight). It will let you
choose to use mpeg4 which is faster but not as compact as H264 or
whatever

it is that QT uses.

I got the Belkin USB 2 card for $6 on ebay, was new and in perfect
shape. Worked fine on the Pismo with 10.3, never tried 10.4 but am
sure it's okay too. It comes with an external AC adapter, which may be
required for peripherals with higher power requirements. Good luck.

Go get the January MacWorld, they have an article about exactly this.
The very simplest way is to get Quicktime Pro, open the movie, and
select Save for iPod in the file menu...

something like this:

Re: international travel-charging issues?

2005-06-06 Thread Kathryn Odell

Thanks to Peter, Tim, and Gladys for your helpful advice!
Cheers,
Kathryn

If the charger plugs into a wall socket, the charger should have
the relevant information on it. Law requires a label or embossing on
the charger (or anything else you plug in).

For example, a Powerbook charger says Input: 100-240v 50-60 Hz.
That tells you it can use both US's 120 voltage and most of the rest
of the world's 240 voltage. If an iPod wall-plug charger says
something similar, you don't need to transform the power, just adapt
the plug.

international travel-charging issues?

2005-06-04 Thread Kathryn Odell
I have the good fortune to be traveling to the UK in a couple of weeks.
It seems to me that I read somewhere that I don't need a converter to
charge my laptop--I only need an adaptor plug. Does anyone know if this
is correct? If so, would this hold true for iPod shuffles as well? (I
have the usb charger for the Shuffle.) One more thing--Apple sells a
world adaptor pack; would there be any reason I couldn't just use the
plugs I already have?

Thanks for any advice,
Kate

printer recommendations

2005-01-15 Thread Kathryn Odell
My Canon S750 has gone kaput, after very little use. It is, however, a
few years old. The print head needs to be replaced, which would be as
expensive as buying a new one. I talked to the Canon rep at MacWorld
this week, and he said that part of the problem was my infrequent use
of the printer. I really don't need to print much, but I do want the
option of color printing. Does anyone have a recommendation for a
printer for someone who does not print that much stuff?
Thanks!

Re: Wireless router woes

2005-01-15 Thread Kathryn Odell

While the wired computers are always able to be online, the wireless
connection sometimes doesn't work. The fix was to disconnect the
router's power for a moment, then plug it back in, and the two
wireless computers would have the signal restored
Yeah, mine does that too. I have an Airport Extreme base unit waiting
for me to get round to slotting it into place instead of the netgear
router.

I've had a Netgear router for 3 years now. It's worked well for me,
both with my Pismo and my new 15 AlBook. I rarely wireless problems,
but when I do, a computer restart usually solves it.

I'm considering getting the Sony CRX830E CDR-DVD for my Pismo

pricey--around $180. However, when I google the part number, I find
lots of places that sell it for much less--like $70. Would there be a
difference in the drive between Mac and PC vendors? Is there anything
I
I bought this exact same drive for around $100 a few months ago, and
installed it in my pismo to replace the defunct LG CD/DVD drive. I
believe it works for either PC or Mac, at any rate it works fine in my
laptop.

Re: Sony CRX830E upgrade for Pismo

2004-12-01 Thread Kathryn Odell
Thanks for your helpful information! --Kate
I'm considering getting the Sony CRX830E CDR-DVD for my Pismo
expansion
bay. snip

Absolutely no difference if it's the bare drive only. Check to see if
the
Mac dealers happen to sell it already installed in the expansion bay
unit
(doubtful).

I've used this same drive in a Pismo and it works great. I hacked the
Authoring Support plugin for OS 9, which you can download from the
xlr8yourmac web site. With it, the drive is recognized in 9 by Disk
Burn and
iTunes. In X you can use Patchburn 3 (free dowload) to do the same
thing.

snip
Highly recommended at $70, especially if you have a modified expansion
bay
unit; though it'll work okay even without that.

Good luck.

I'm not doing anything unethical! I paid for this music at the Apple

iTunes store downloads

2004-10-31 Thread Kathryn Odell
I made my first download at the Apple music store recently. Then I went
to put the music on a CD, and found I could not convert the music files
to AIFF. Here's the message I got:

All the songs in the folder or on the disk will be converted except
songs you purchased from the Music Store. (Purchased songs are encoded
using a protected AAC format that prevents them from being converted.)

Don't I need the AIFF format to play on my car CD player? If I am
unable to use the music that I download in this way, I think that was
my firstand last---download from the Apple store.

Thanks for any advice,

new CD drive for Pismo

2004-08-25 Thread Kathryn Odell
I am sad to say that it looks like my beloved Pismo's CD drive is no
longer working. In trying to load software (which opens fine on my
newer G4 laptop), the CD keeps spinning and stopping and getting
nowhere. After repeated tries, I got the CD to appear on the desktop,
but that's about it!

I am seeking recommendations for a replacement. I would like it to be
able to go into my existing expansion bay. Are there companies that
will let you send the bay in and they will install it, or is this
something I could do myself? I've installed memory, and a new processor
on a G3 desktop, but that's about it. I don't want to spend too much
money as this is an older computer.

Thanks for any advice and/or tips!

advice on laptop purchase

2004-04-25 Thread Kathryn Odell
I am contemplating a purchase of a new laptop to replace my G3 firewire
(Pismo). I would like a DVD burner on it. I am looking at:

--14 ibook (1.2 Ghz, 256 MB DDR266 RAM, Bluetooth, SuperDrive, 512 L2
cache, 60 GB HD, Radeon 9200, 32 MB Video memory, airport extreme (note
that I have customized what this comes with)

L2 cache, 80 GB HD, Radeon 9700, 64 MB Video memory, airport extreme,
FW 400 800

With the ibook I know I would need to upgrade memory. How important is
the faster RAM, the extra video memory, the improved video card, and
the bump in processor speed for working with iMovie and iDVD? The price
difference is pretty dramatic-- like $500-600!

Any advice would be appreciated!

weird email

2004-02-16 Thread Kathryn Odell
I've received a few unsuccessful delivery notifications (see example below).
The weird thing is I didn't send these emails. Does anyone have any idea of
what might be going on here? I have a Pismo running OS9, using Comcast
Internet with a Netgear wireless router and a wireless card. Thanks for your
help.

pc monitors with macs

2003-12-10 Thread Kathryn Odell
Hi everyone,
Sorry for being off-topic here, but I'm hoping I can call on your collective
expertise to help my son's computer. I bought him a G5 tower for graduation,
and he was using an old Sony monitor with it. The Sony gave out, and he's
had some offers of free monitors from friends. One, an IBM, plugs in just
fine, but no picture appears on the screen. Is there a way to tell which pc
monitors will work with a mac? Is there anything that I have to do aside
from plugging it to the computer? Thanks for any help!

Re: Pismo DVD Revving really high

2003-10-22 Thread Kathryn Odell
I'd like to add a comment on this Pismo CD issue. I've noticed that my Pismo
CD tends to do this noisy high-speed spinning when I insert a home-burned CD
(using RoxioToast). It will eventually show up on the desktop, but it takes
a while. Does this mean the drive is going? It's happened for over a year.
Any comments on this?

Everytime I insert an audio CD into my Pismo CD drive, the drive begins
to rev really high (sounds like a jet airplane). The drive still seems
to work fine and the revving lasts only temporarily, but the noise is
surely something wrong and unnatural. Is this spelling the end? Any
suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks.

It depends on the model and make of the drive, as well, apparently, as
 the cd.

All modern CD drives tend to be noisier, and that whining jet engine
sound is quite familar to anyone who works with PC's: all the desktops
these days ship with these gawdawful 587x speed drives that sound like
 the Concorde winding up.

Once the disk is recognized as an audio CD it slows down.

The signs that the drive is going is if this goes on and on, or revs up
and down repeatedly before the disk is recognized.

Re: using a PowerBook Wallstreet 300 in a coffee shop?

2003-09-29 Thread Kathryn Odell
I have a Pismo 400 with an Airport card. At home I have a Netgear wireless
router. It all works like a charm at home and was very easy to set up. I was
at a local coffee house on Saturday, where a friend and I were working on a
project. I accidentally clicked a link on a document, and what do you
know---I was online! I checked my Airport control panel and discovered that
there was a wireless network there in the coffee house. It doesn't get any
easier than that!

I think we need to make a trip to the Apple Store (2 hrs away in

there is a feature in Norton Windows that does this because I have used it

Re: Download problems

2003-03-22 Thread Kathryn Odell
I have ATT cable internet. Yes, I have a beige g3 that is also hooked up,
and it downloads fine. In fact, since that's my son's computer, it is
downloading quite a bit! So I have ruled that out. I use Airport on my
pismo, and tried a wired connection to see if that made a difference. Nope.

If you can, yes, I would recommend that you reinstall. There is something
fishy about this, don't what it is. But before reinstalling, what kind of
connection do you have to the Internet? Do you have any other computer at
home you could try to verify your Internet connection?

Download problems

2003-03-21 Thread Kathryn Odell
I've been working on my taxes all day (yuk!) and am finally just about done
with the fed form. I went to download the state program from Intuit, and
found I can't. Then I remembered that the last time I tried to download
something, I had problems then, too. I've got a Pismo running 9.2.2 with IE
5.1. When I look at the Preferences, it shows a bunch of cookies being
enabled. The browser does fine with everything else.

Hmm...I just tried my Mozilla browser; it won't download either. When I
click on a download button it just reverts to the previous screen.\

I'm mystified. Anyone have any ideas?

Pismo to X, or not?

I've got a pismo 400 with 320 mb of ram. I'm running ox 9.2, and am

switch. How much does everything slow down? Do you regret moving up?

I've got my free copy of osX here (got the free educator's version) awaiting
advice.

Thanks, Kate

Explorer has gone weird!

2002-11-16 Thread Kathryn Odell
I have a G3 Pismo with an airport card, connected to a Netgear wireless
router. Suddenly today, I'm experiencing some weirdness with Explorer, and
along with that I'm having one page on a web site refuse to ftp in
Dreamweaver.

The explorer thingit won't download, says I'm missing Flash player
plugins (I have the whole program!) and refuses to go to the Macromedia
site, but will go to other sites. Is my computer demon possessed? I know I
probably need to trash and reload, but can anyone tell me how to save my
favorites?

And in DW, I'm getting parameters are incorrect for my one page. I noticed
I had a / in the file name and thought, aha, that's it. Changed it, and re
uploaded. Not working. Works in preview in browser mode, but not when
actually on the net.

Re: Airport connection dropouts

2002-11-05 Thread Kathryn Odell
I have a pismo 400 with an airport card (don't remember which rev). I use a
Netgear wireless router with cable internet. I also have had some weird
dropout problems. Looking at the airport connection bar, the connection
would drop out and then reappear repeatedly. It doesn't happen much but when
it does, the problem doesn't go away until I change the tcp/ip setup and
then change it back. I can't see it being the microwave, or I would have a
much more constant problem. I don't have a 2.4 cordless phone. I live in a
self-contained house. Weird.
Kate

I wonder if other people on this list experience flaky Airport connections.
I have a TiBook 667/GB Ethernet Rev B Airport Card and a graphite base
station all the newest updates installed. Normally I've got all 4 bars no
matter where I have got the TiBook in the apartment but hen suddenly -
without moving the TiBook the wireless reception drops completely. Again
this happens out of the blue and has no correlation to any particular
software I am running at the time. The cordless phone and the cell phone
that I have do not change in their activity (unplugging them makes no
difference). Once the connection is gone it sometimes comes back on it's own
(after a couple of hours) as I can tell from the ErageX error log (I am
checking email all 5 mins). If I want to regain connection I need to bring
the TiBook right next to the Airport station, then in many cases restart the
base station (pulling the power plug) and then change the channel via the
airport config utility. After that everything will be ok for a undetermined
period of time I have experienced months without failure but also recurring
connection failure several times a day. I had already exchanged the Airport
card but no difference. I still believe it's probably got something to do
with the TiBook, since I never had any trouble with my Pismo.

I reseated the usb card (as well as the firewire card next to it). I'm sure
it's in there right. I tried the printer and cable with my laptop. They work
fine there, but when I connect to the usb card, it's a no-go. I connected a
usb floppy drive to see if the disk would appear on the
desktop--interestingly enough, the floppy doesn't even seem to get power
from the port. The light doesn't come on, and of course no disk on the
desktop. I'm thinking the card is bad.

usb problems

2002-10-01 Thread Kathryn Odell

This is a bit off topic, but it does involve a g3. In addition to my Pismo I
have a beige g3 desktop. I added firewire and usb pci cards to it which have
worked well for the last few years. However lately I've had problems with
the usb-it's not recognizing that the printer is connected. I've uninstalled
and installed the print driver (it's a fairly recent hp), but still no luck.
Could the card be bad?

 test some other USB devices

try a new cable with the printer

try opening up the G3 and pulling and reseating the USB card. (Actually,
 I'd do this first.)

Okay, here's an update. Now it's back to working fine. The only difference

They had 2 cell phones, but both were off. Is it just a weird coincidence
that when I want to show off the wireless capabilities of the Pismo, it

usb hub-will it work for me?

2002-08-19 Thread Kathryn Odell

This is not entirely on-topic, but I'm hoping I can get some help anyway. In
my classroom I have 3 computers and one epson printer. Could I use a usb hub
to connect all the computers to the one printer? I know I would be using it
opposite the way it's intended but it seems like it might work since usb in
input and output. However, I think I would need a cable that has two printer
type usb ends.

Or is there another easy way to accomplish this?

We've just been plugging and unplugging the usb cable into the keyboards.
Unfortunately I lost a keyboard this way last year through kids jamming the
plug in upside down and ruining the keyboard usb jack. So I want a method
that would not require kids to be constantly moving cables around.

Thanks, Kate

That got me thinking. Wonder why they did remove the sound in but kept the

It sucks, but he's right... You'll have to use a PC to connect, or have them
come out with their laptop. If you're in a larger more established area,
then it isn't so hard... Otherwise you can be screwed and the techs just
 normally don1t bring them out.

The bad part is ATT sometimes just has weird problems with their accounts,
having to close them out and needing you to reregister... And you'll have to
do it with a PC or wait till they can send someone out who can do it for
 you.

get online and they just said they would send a technician out. When I
said I could probably do it myself if they would just give me a few
tips, they said to type sas.r4.attbi.com in my brower url field and
try to register online. As you may guess, I got an unable to connect

connected? Oh, by the way, this is ATT Broadband. Thanks,
