Re: WS, Lexmark, 9.1, freezes

2004-08-17 Thread Kris McGrath
I believe this is a USB only printer so I will through this one thought out.
A friend of mine had a WallStreet with a USB PC card and USB mouse. She
complained that it was freezing all of the time. When I looked at it, I
couldn't find a single problem, but I did notice that it only froze while on
battery. Further testing showed that it only froze when I tried to use a
USB device while running off battery. I never figured it out, but she was
able to work with it once she knew that it had to be on AC to use a USB
device.

It's been a while since I put the Airport in my iBook 366 MHz, but IIRC the

easy. The airport card sits right under the keyboard. You will need
Apple's Airport- it isn't a standard PC Card slot.

Re: Administering a PC Box from a Powerbook

2004-03-12 Thread Kris McGrath
Billy,

>From one bi-lingual admin to another, I can tell you with a bit of coaxing,
it is possible. Two of the simplest ways are using Remote Desktop
Connections and Microsoft Telnet Services.

RDC gives you a full gui interface to the WinXP box. There are a few
shortcomings, but it works. If you need instructions on how to set things
up, email me off-list. The Mac RDC client is available on the MS website:

Telnet services can be installed on WinXP. You can execute an insecure
telnet right from OS X Terminal. This gives you command prompt interface to
WinXP. It is very powerful, if you can remember the commands you need!

I administer a Windows 2000 domain (Active Directory) so my office computer
is a PC, but as a mobile user, my Ti is my best friend :) and I can work on
almost everything using these two services.

Good luck,

Kris

Re: Office X: Opening Excel

2004-02-09 Thread Kris McGrath
It was someone else's file. I support a 'bilingual' environment 60%/40% PC
to Mac. Sometimes the best solutions I come up involve a mac smiling
through a window!

It is worth noting thought that unlike Alain, my case involved a flat
data-file. There was no importing involved. I never did figure out what
caused the problem in the first place.

As to your question about cross platform compatibility, I can't say that I
have noticed any. There may be some known issue, but I have never
encountered it. I manage my PC's from a WinXP box running Office XP, but do
much of my other work on an OSX Ti-Book with Office V.x. More often then
not, things work really well.

(For those in shock, yes I did use M$ and 'work really well' in the same
thought)

Kidding aside, it sounds to me like you got a defective drive. Try it on
another machine, if you have one available, and if you continue to have
problems, return it. Remember that bad drives can show different symptoms
under different circumstances, so the problems on another OS or another

Re: iBook as External Hard Drive

2004-01-25 Thread Kris McGrath
I think Laurent is correct that FireWire Target mode is the best option, but
I thought you held down 'T' as the book starts. At least, that's how my Ti
and my iBook Indago work.

In either case, from another Mac (OS 9 or X) it looks just like a standard
drive and you can go in and pick out what you want. I have done this for a
few people having problems with their logic board and it worked fine. If
things are stable, you can also use 'Disk Utility' to create a disk image of
the HD.

Select the partition in the left frame and:
Images Menu->New->Image from

Re: Does D-Link Router support Appletalk?

2004-01-06 Thread Kris McGrath
I have the same router and I can connect via IP (AFP/IP or TCP/IP) to any
other computer, but I don't think it actually supports the Appletalk
protocol.

I am curious about something though, you said you turned off DHCP to work
with your existing network. Are you using it as a bridge? I couldn't get
mine to work as a bridge and the documentation said it wasn't supported.
Static IP was the only option.

Thanks,
Kris

Subject: Re: Does D-Link Router support Appletalk?

I purchased a D-link 614+ wireless router. The router does all
internet stuff OK in both wireless and otherwise mode. I can even
turn off the DHCP so that it can work in the network that already has
an asante router going to the cable modem and other switches.

HOWEVER, whether I am just going from port to port, or through the
WAN port or through wireless, I cannot see any of the network. I
cannot see the other OSX macs, or the OS9 macs or the appletalk or
the usb printers. Yes I turned on appletalk and so forth.

Re: airport sharing under OS9?

2003-11-27 Thread Kris McGrath
It's been some time since I did this (so someone please correct me if I am
wrong), but if I recall correctly, you can create a network from the
"Airport" tool. There is a "Software Base Station" button that will give
you the options. The problem was that it doesn't actually "bridge" your
Ethernet and airport connections. It just sets itself up as a gateway, so
all of your airport enabled computers will need to have the IP set manually.

Does anyone know if you can use "internet sharing" to share an airport
network connection under OS( the way that you can under OSX? What I
want to do is use the Airport card in the Powerbook to get it on the
network, then bridge that network to a wired ethernet computer by
connecting the 2.

Under OSX it's simple, I'm just wondering if it works under OS9.

Any info is appreciated.

Re: Connecting stereo to PowerBook

2002-04-09 Thread Kris McGrath

IMHO there isn't a single 'Right way' to do this. If you amp stages are
such that any input beyond your volume's mid point causes clipping or
saturation, then it will sound distorted and choppy. Brian is right about
one thing though, signal to noise ratio is important. Once you have found
the highest input signal without distortion, leave it alone and adjust the
volume from the amplifier. In short, find an acceptable volume on the
pismo, then use the volume control on the stereo. Sounds to me like you
were already on the right track anyway.

Re: Toast disabling disc burner extension

2002-04-09 Thread Kris McGrath

I setup a Lacie FW CDRW yesterday (OS 9.2.2), and installed Toast 5.1. Like
many others that have posted, it did not disable the disk burner or
authoring support extensions. I wouldn't want to venture a guess as to why,
but it does seem hit and miss.

Re: How to change/choose printers in 'classic' under OS X?

I have hit this a couple of times. Try setting the printer up using the
Classic app- Desktop Printer Utility.

Re: OS X or OS 9

2002-03-18 Thread Kris McGrath

I would suggest that OS 9 is her best bet. X is great, and it is the one
that Apple is pushing, but if most of her apps are classic anyway, then
there is no real benefit. When she is ready to upgrade her software, then
switch. OS 9 is still a great system and it sounds like it already works
for her, so as the saying goes 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. That's my
$0.02.

OT: Eudora

2001-07-31 Thread Kris McGrath

I have an annoying little problem with Eudora 5.1 on OS 9.1. No matter what I
do, the message windows spawn 50% off the bottom of the screen. Everything
works fine, but this is quite annoying! Anyone ever seen this before?

Re: Anti-virus software

2001-07-31 Thread Kris McGrath

Have to agree with Cathy. I have been very pleased with Virex. It is simple to
install, use and update, and I have never had any kind of conflicts with it. I
find Norton problematic, since it is busy trying to do 20 things you never
wanted it to do in the first place!

Re: Slightly OT: Office 2001 Upgrade

2001-07-18 Thread Kris McGrath

I think so, but I will offer you one caution. When I started upgrading
people, their older Word Documents 'appeared' corrupted when opened in
Word 2001. This was cleared up SR1 from Microsoft. If you want to
upgrade, I strongly suggest downloading that fix before you install.

Just to offer a different point of view, I use the atypical look of my iBook to
catch attention when presenting to groups. I train non-technical people to use
computers of all types, and for all purposes. The 'friendly' look of the newer
Mac's is much more appealing to the novice then the intimidating look of the
mysterious 'Black Box' design. Just my 2 cents.

While that spark shouldn't damage your PB, to be on the safe side, you
should always plug your adapter into the outlet first, and then into the
computer. In the old Apple setup guides it was the recommended
procedure to avoid possible surge damage.

I think you will find that Quebec is still part of Canada, no thanks to
Lucien :-)

Actually, Mac still has a relatively large portion of the Educational
market in Canada. Many of our schools are tweaking to the idea that it
is easier to teach traditional topics (Math, Science) using Mac
technology, then it is on PC's.

Re: Off-Topic: Smart High Schoolers

2001-07-07 Thread Kris McGrath

You know Peter, we were all young, ONCE ;)

Youth isn't a crime, and knowledge is gained from every experience.
Unfortunately, some people, when they feel challenged by someone else's
knowledge, tend to blame them for causing the vary problem that they
have resolved. Don't take it personally.

I will suggest though that there is good reason for some people to be
suspicious of uncertified "Computer Techies". I have had to clean up
messes left by people who 'knew' what they were doing. Credentials
simply say that at some point and time, you did know what you claim to
know. The fact of the matter is that when you have obtained your
education, you won't have all the answers, but you will have a far
better understanding of where to find the answers you need! The true
irony is that skill and qualifications don't always go together, and I
am sure everyone on this list can confess to knowing some highly
educated idiots!
