We had some discussion on this last week and week before. If someone would have suggested it, I probably would have. I did mention my problem with duplicate numbers on many of the photos. I did mention that I needed to rename photos and someone mentioned that it could be done with another application that I don't have, but not with iPhoto. Sorry for the delay in answering, Claire. I was away for about a week and just getting caught up on my e-mail. I didn't see your query before. Is pha referring to a 3rd party plug-in or script? No, I'm talking about the built-in Batch Change capability (found under the Photos menu item in iPhoto). Looking in help for rename, nothing useful shows up; the only mention of batch in the iPhoto help, says: --- If you want multiple photos to have the same title, date, or comments, you can edit them all at once. WARNING: Setting a photo's title, date, or comments changes it in the photo library and in all albums and books where it appear Yes, the help is rather sparse on that feature. that would be counterproductive here. How so? I looked a bit for a applescript to do unique numbering within iPhoto, but failed to find one, so that's why I suggested a method outside of iPhoto. Here's how you do it: 1) Select all the photos that you want to rename within iPhoto 2) Select Batch Change from the Photos menu 3) In the resulting dialog box, choose Set Title to Text and enter the common text for each (e.g. Basketball) 4) Select Append a number to each photo. This is what suffixes the unique, sequential numbering. 5) Then, to export, just select Share - Export with the selection Use title for the filename. Also ensure that Use extension is selected so that Windows users won't have any problems opening. Since every filename is now unique (i.e., with the sequential numbering), there will be no duplicate filename errors. HTH. -pha -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I've probably got over 40 hours into this now and it's not so much the specific form as it is learning how to do this type of task. I've even downloaded a trial version of bbedit 8.2. But I'm lost and it seems I've asked everybody and only gotten blank stares as a result. Is it possible to do what I'm trying to do? And if so could someone please tell me how? Are you scanning to a PDF? If you upgrade to Tiger you can use text annotation tool to fill it out. Otherwise, any graphic app that supports layers and has text tools should allow you to open and put annotation on top. PDFPen Pro (found on Version Tracker) will allow you to actually make PDF forms with editable fields, but if you're only doing this for one form, it may not be worth the purchase price. -patch -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Repair or Replace PB?
Kind of in a quandary here, so I'm looking for additional input to help me make up my mind. A couple of weeks ago, my 15-inch AlBook (1.25Ghz) was damaged on a business trip (I won't get into the specifics of that, but I'm also looking to get a new case). It didn't appear at first that the damage was too severe -- dented bottom case -- but the HD started acting flaky and I had to reseat the AP card. I sent it in for repair to the Apple Service Center and the repair estimate came back -- between $1,200-1,500 (US) to fix. They actually sent it back to me with a laundry list of parts that need to be replaced -- seems like the whole laptop, less the logic board. This PB is about 14 months old. In January I just purchased AppleCare for it (which won't cover the repair repair in this case). I'm trying to decide if I should even worry about getting it fixed or just bite the bullet and get a new PB. The equivalent of my machine is now the 1.67 GHz 15-inch PB, with the SMS, new trackpad, etc. It's also $2,299... if memory serves, my PB was around $2,499 when I purchased it. I kind of hate the idea of sinking more than $4,000 into this computer when I can get the latest and greatest for less than $1,000 more than the repair bill. So... repair or replace? There's a couple of different routes you can go on this, though: 1 - I'm not sure if you can use the iPod as a FW drive on the PC as you can on the Mac, but if you can, mount the iPod as a drive, then copy the iTunes music folder to it and transfer to the Mac (note the difference between doing this and syncing songs normally). This is the most efficient method. 2 - Use one of several utilities for extracting songs from the iPod. Do a search on Versiontracker or head over to ipodlounge.com. This method may be a little more difficult, but if you are unable to do #1, this might be your best bet. As others have suggested, don't forget to de-authorize the old computer before turning it back in. -- P. H. Patch Adams [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Or could I deactivate the HP by annointing the Epson the OSX default again? Sorry so slow, but what would you do to deactivate the HP in OSX? It's been a while, and I don't have that particular printer handy with me now, but I think you'll have to remove the printer from Print Center, then re-add when you want to print from OS X. A quick workaround is to print to a PDF from your OS X apps, then print the resultant PDF using your OS 9 driver, though that's not something you'd probably want to rely on for everyday use. A similar issue, I've found, occurs when using the printer from multiple accounts using Fast User Switching in Panther. What happens is that more than one printer daemon becomes active, and they conflict with each other, resulting in no communication between the computer and the printer. The solution there is to drop to a command line, find the errant process and kill it. (Use 'ps -aux | grep HP' to find the PID, then 'kill PID' or something similar). That's worked for me every time with that particular problem. Perhaps a derivative of this will work in your case. I no longer rely on Classic, so that part's a non-issue for me now. Good luck! -- P. Re: Pismo Battery and DVD problems

I'm assuming a bad battery. Any thoughts different to this? Ed, both of these sound like problems I've had with my Pismo. First, the battery is probably dead. If it's the original battery that came with the laptop, the age is probably about right for replacement. I had to buy a new one a few months ago -- I believe it was through MacConnection or MacMall. There's an Apple utility called Apple Battery Reset that runs under OS 9 (only, if I'm not mistaken) that can sometimes salvage batteries on G3-series PBs. You can find it through Version Tracker. Second, The CD/DVD drive only reads DVD's no CD's are read, the drive spins up but no icon on the desktop. I've reloaded the latest extension for OS 9.1 with the same result. This is a common problem on the Pismos that shipped with problematic LG drives. You can check System Profiler or the drive itself for the letters LG, which indicate one of these drives. The PBs that shipped with Matsushita-manufactured drives are not reported to have the same problems. In any case, the only real solution is to replace it. There are replacement drives offered by MCE Tech and if you look around on eBay, you can usually find several there as well. I probably should have sent mine to Apple for replacement as I've got AppleCare, but I didn't want to give the laptop up for several days. Also, I've heard that Apple is sometimes unwilling to admit this problem, and has been known to ship the 'Books back with yet another LG drive, which soon exhibits the same problems. I use mine with an external FW CDR drive most of the time, so it hasn't been a terrible inconvenience except when traveling since I don't feel like lugging the external drive around with me. -- P. H.
