Now that you've mentioned this it's completely obvious looking at

When my original pismo CD/DVD drive died, we replaced it with the Sony

remember where. You'll need to keep your original tray, and install the
Sony onto it, this was tricky, IIRC the hassle was more removing the
old drive from the tray. We weren't able to put the Pismo faceplate on
it, although theoretically it can be done. It works fine, and I have a
CD burner onboard for the price of a replacement read only drive.

Subject: Re: Audion is now free for download!

What I need to know...
is how to get the music into my Lombard and on to CD's because when we
attend fiddle sessions, we meet some old timer who will teach us a
song,
he/she plays a song and we capture it on cassette, we come home have
some
neighborhood kid on his windows machine convert it to CD. WE then take
that
There's a free program called Audacity that would work well for this. I
believe you can download it at soundforge.com. All you need to get the
music from the cassette machine to your Lombard is an RCA to 1/8 inch
stereo cable. Plug the rca end into the output of the cassette
recorder, plug the 1/8 in plug into the audio in on your laptop, and
record the output into Audacity (it can save the music as AIFF files
which is what you need for CDs), edit into single tracks, and burn your
CD.

There is a very cool shareware program called Amazing SlowDowner,$40,
it can slow down the tracks in the computer, and allows you to loop
sections to play over and over while you learn them. I use this program
for transcribing and learning music.

Thanks for your input. Did you have to do the soldering in the drive
sled?
No soldering needed, just lots of pesky tiny screws that you don't want
to lose...

I'm considering getting the Sony CRX830E CDR-DVD for my Pismo expansion
bay. I have found it at a few Mac parts sites, and it's pretty
pricey--around $180. However, when I google the part number, I find
lots of places that sell it for much less--like $70. Would there be a
difference in the drive between Mac and PC vendors? Is there anything I
I bought this exact same drive for around $100 a few months ago, and
installed it in my pismo to replace the defunct LG CD/DVD drive. I
believe it works for either PC or Mac, at any rate it works fine in my
laptop.

The drive fits in the LG's tray with no problem, however the faceplate

Check the system profiler and see if it is an LG drive...I had one in
this Pismo and one day back in July, it suddenly stopped mounting DVD's

My Pismo was the one with LG drive, it bit the dust slowly, first
stopped reading DVDs, then a while later stopped reading CDs as well.

I replaced it with a Sony CD/DVD drive that also burns CDs for less
money than it would have cost to replace it with another Apple CD/DVD
read only drive. It fit in the old tray for the LG, granted the
faceplate doesn't fit, but everything else works fine.

This seems very likely to be the problem. I am currently booted in OSX and

Re: Pismo sleep issue

Further updates on the situation. We installed sys 9.04 onto a 3rd, empty
partition using the original installation disc, just for test purposes. That
partition wakes up from sleep, but still not my main partition, on which we
reinstalled 9.2.1, trying to keep my original system.

This seems to lead to a software conflict. Anyone have any hints?? I'm
getting tired of crashing and force restarts.

thanks,

Re: Pismo sleep issue

2004-08-29 Thread Seth Austen
My 2+ year old 20 G travelstar hard drive died last week, and I got a 40 G
Seagate to replace it. For the most part the installation went smoothly,
however I've since been having issues where the computer won't wake up from
sleep, so I have to force a restart. We've run norton, disk warrior, rebuilt
desktop, etc, to no avail.

For the record, we created 3 partitions on the new hard drive, copied system
9.1 and my files from a backup into 1 partition, then updated that partition
to 9.2 and installed 10.3 from CDs into another partition. I'm currently
working from the sys 9 partition, want to get that running smoothly before I
deal with OSX.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Seth

PS, thanks to Adam for the recommendation of the Sony CRX820E, I've just
ordered one of these to replace my LG CD/DVD drive that also decided to go
south in the last few weeks.

One option to consider is MOTU 828 firewire D/A interface. 8 analog ins and

G3/400, 512 RAM, this laptop really is a good recording rig.

Re: Wallstreet acting flaky

2002-11-16 Thread Seth Austen
I have had a recurring problem on my wallstreet for a few months now.
Sometimes when I touch the menu bar with the cursor, the finder will quit.
Sometimes it happens without doing this, instead, a program will just crash
on me (sometimes while quitting the program) and when I go to the menu bar
to restart, the finder will quit, then I have to do a force restart.

We've tried everything that we can think of. I have allocated large amounts
of RAM to hungry programs like IE, OE, etc. At various times I have run
Norton, Tech Tool (lite), Disk Warrior, have zapped PRAM and rebuilt
desktop. In addition, we've tossed every useless extension we can think of,
all to no avail! I'll also mention that for some time now, this PB will not
go to sleep, thus implying that something is running in the background, and
perhaps contributing to the problem??

I've pretty much maxed out this PB G3/300, specs are; 512 RAM, 20 G IBM
Travelstar HD, Macally USB and Firewire2go PCMCIA cards, currently running
system 9.1, but it started doing this while it was still system 8.6...

Thanks for any info!

which came with an IBM DYLA-28100 8.1-GB, 2.5-Inch IDE Hard-Disk Drive. The
drive, it turns out, is surprisingly(?) loud. It spins down fine, but the
hard drive needs to spin pretty continuously most of the time for what i'm

My refurbed wallstreet had that same drive in it, it started out OK, however
within 3 months it got really noisy, and was driving me nuts. I recently
swapped it out for a 20 gig IBM Travelstar, that drive is quite reasonable,
let's hope it stays that way.
