Did you try the Streaming/Exporting Wizard in VLC? Looking at the

think MPEG-4 and H.264 will only play in QT Pro, but wouldn't MPEG-1 and

I think Sandra's making the distinction between a private mailing list,
such as G-Books was, and a list which is publicly archived and can thus
be searched via Google. But I don't know whether that's true of Google groups.

I shall now eat humble pie :) DVDROM/CDRW drives like the Sony CRX820E
do seem to be nearer the $100 mark, which I suppose makes $70 look
rather better if you want something that preserves the look of your Pismo.

I'd say using a snow ABS is a *very* good reason to turn on the
firewall. IIRC, what Apple calls a 'firewall' in the ABS is just NAT,
and the snow ABS only has WEP encryption (as opposed to WPA in the later
base stations), which is no protection at all against a determined hacker.

If it's an LG drive, it's probably gone the way of most pismo LG drives.
Sorry.

When mine died (again) recently, the system log showed a lot of
instances of the error 'IOATAController device blocking bus' in the
weeks leading up to its demise, even when it appeared to be working
fine. So that might confirm the diagnosis.

But classical economics also assumes that advertising costs. When you're

practically zero. Even a take-up rate of, say, 0.001% (and I have a
depressing feeling that the rate is higher than that) is a result.

Powerbook G4 diassembly

2005-07-12 Thread Tim Hodgson
 Hi all,

I'm trying to get to the HD in a PB G4 (15" Firewire 800 model), and I'm
stuck trying to remove the top case. I know there's a latch just behind
the DVD drive slot, but can I find it?! I've tried a variety of
dentist's pick-shaped devices (not having an actual dentist's pick) with
no success. If I had a better idea of what the latch is like it would
probably help!

Has anyone been here?

I bought the other version of this adaptor:

absolutely fine so far. Seems to run at a similar temp to the original.
My only gripe: the cord from the adaptor to the computer is barely long
enough to reach to the floor, so I have to put it on the desk. No big
deal, but the kind of thing Apple probably wouldn't overlook. (Then
again, if Apple had designed the yo-yo better I wouldn't need this
one... but that's another rant.)

Worryingly, it did mutate into a more contagious form:

blue pismo screen

2005-04-28 Thread Tim Hodgson
Hi all,

My pismo has lately developed a worrying habit of waking up with a
blueish tinted screen. It's not an all-over cast, it's more that it seems
to be picking up the subtle horizontal grey stripes in the menu bar and
title bars, and colouring them blue, in a streaky kind of way! (I would
post a screengrab, but of course the effect isn't actually preserved in a
grab.)

After a few minutes the cast disappears quite suddenly.

Is this screen on the way out? I fear I already know the answer...

Bruce, did you get a good enough look to get an impression of its speed?
It was quite a pleasant shock when Panther turned out to be faster than
Jag, but I'm wondering if Tiger's use of graphics acceleration is going
to mean that older Macs will struggle.

If it's an LG drive (check in System Profiler) it's almost certainly the
drive gone bad. You could check the list archive for suggested
replacements, and have a look at macdan's page:

If you search Versiontracker for .DS, it turns up a few things; none of

I agree with you about the practicality of the ports; I'm a Pismo owner,
but recently borrowed a 15" PB for a couple of weeks while the pismo was
being repaired. Of course the newer PB is a lovely machine in most
respects, but those cables sticking out of the side, right where I wanted

But given the screen hinge design, it's hard to see what they could do...

Is there any chance the problem is due to the version of Python installed

it by downgrading your Python installation.

I think you may have missed my para 2: " it lasted about 4 hours" ;-) I'm

I did only charge for around 12 hours, as recommended by Newer; maybe
I'll try charging it longer next time I run it right down, just in case
it improves things.

NewerTech pismo battery

2005-01-27 Thread Tim Hodgson
Hi all,

I posted recently asking opinions of replacement batteries, and had a
couple of mails offlist asking me to report back on the outcome.

I went for the NewerTech 7200mAh battery (about $160 from OWC). I gave it
a (very unscientific) test yesterday; after calibrating as recommended,
it lasted about 4 hours. This was with the screen at one notch under
maximum brightness (it's over 4 years old now - needs all the help it can
get :), and with AirPort running. Obviously if I was running on battery
normally I'd be dimming the screen, which would make a big difference.

I must admit it doesn't seem that different from the life of the original
battery when new, but nostalgia could be getting the better of me.

One nice surprise was the speed of delivery: ordered from the UK Friday
lunchtime (local time), arrived Monday lunchtime :-)

OK, many thanks. That leads to one last question! The Apple adaptor says

third-party power adaptor

2005-01-20 Thread Tim Hodgson
Hi,

I asked this question yesterday, but as an addendum to a not-really-
related topic, so it may have been overlooked.

I've just bought a Micro Accessories power adaptor for my pismo. It's
this one, from OWC:

This is sold as a Powerbook G3 adaptor, and I was told that it is
suitable for a pismo, but I noticed that it's rated at 65W, whereas the
original Apple adaptor is 45W. I'm fairly sure this is not a problem, but
before I barbecue my Powerbook, can anyone confirm that?

thanks,

TimH

Thanks Carl. Actually I went ahead and bought the 7200mAh battery from
OWC. Ordered from Illinois Friday, arrived UK Monday :) Haven't actually
got round to installing it yet!

Replacement pismo battery

2005-01-13 Thread Tim Hodgson
Hi all,

My Pismo's battery life is now zero, so I'm in the market. Although I'm
in the UK, the most promising deals I've found so far are the high-
capacity (6600mAh and 7200mAh) NewerTech batteries sold by OWC in the
US. Even after shipping and tax these work out slighly cheaper than a
standard 5400mAh battery bought here. (Don't ask me why :)

Any comments, or alternative suggestions?

thanks,

Apologies if this has already been suggested (I haven't read every word
of this thread) but here's one way to troubleshoot a messed up account:

Rename your old account's ~/Library folder to, say, oldLibrary (in this
case I guess that will have to be done from the new account, either in
Terminal using sudo, or with a third-party GUI tool) then log out and
into the old account. The system creates a new Library folder, to which
you can slowly and cautiously transfer your old preferences, application
support files etc. It's not quite as tedious as it sounds, since in many
cases the old
files are redundant. Usual caveats about backups and all that!

Could it be sysctl?

sysctl hw.cpufrequency (you have to divide the answer by 1 million) gives
you proc speed, but I don't know whether it's actually measuring or just
reporting the state of a variable.

No specific suggestions, but you might want to search the archives of a
couple of Apple lists:

Scitech -

Unix-porting -

(I know you're not porting from unix but a lot of compiler discussions
come up there.)

And if you don't come up with anything it's definitely worth posting to
scitech - lots of helpful people.

As far as I understand it, MS's main reason for buying VPC was, as an
earlier poster said, for its virtual server potential - the ability to
run several Windows servers on one machine, possibly on several different
versions of Windows.

Without getting into black helicopters territory, it does seems plausible
that they wouldn't like the idea of someone running a Windows server
thinking "hey, with VPC I could also run linux with Apache on this
machine, instead of paying out for IIS". So there could be a business
case, in their eyes, for disabling linux support.

Anyway, we'll find out :)

Although having said that, it'd be worth checking your Applecare booklet.
If it has the old version of the clause listing the items not covered,
which *doesn't* mention batteries, I'd say you've got a case.

I'd guess - and that's all it is :) - that /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb
isn't created unless you (or some program) explicitly do(es) so, and if
it doesn't exist, the 'weekly' script will just skip updating locate.
That's the one that takes the time - I just ran MacJ here and the whole
thing took just under 5m (pismo/500), of which about 4m 20s was updating
locate.

As Laurent says, I suppose it's an indication that Apple doesn't consider
them too important. Having said that, I've sometimes wondered why they
didn't make something like 'anacron' part of the default system. It's an
addition to (or possibly replacement of?) cron, and allows scripts which
have missed their scheduled time to run automatically when the machine is
next on/awake. Used to work nicely on my old LinuxPPC box.

I think Keyboard Maestro might do it, amongst several macro utilities.
It's just been taken over by Stairways (the Interarchy people) and
there's a new version out.

It does grate a bit though, to have to spend money for something that

I can't remember which script does what, but one (I think the weekly one)
updates the 'locate' database. That's used by the unix 'locate' command,
which is very useful if you use terminal, and not so useful if you don't!
- though I don't know if some other OSX utilities also make use of it
behind the scenes.

The other scripts are for system log maintenance of various kinds:
deleting old logs, compressing recent ones. So you'll probably see those
logs getting gradually bigger if you never run the scripts.

Actually, if you download Brian Hill's MacJanitor utility, which gives
you a GUI interface to run the scripts on demand, the Help file has a
good explanation.

On a pismo 500 running 10.3.4, I get exactly the same results as you,

Clicking something and getting no response is the thing that really
irritated me and stuck in my mind, but I think moving the cursor is also
sometimes erratic. I should have said that this is with tap-to-click
enabled. Maybe that has something to do with it? (The PB isn't here at
the moment so I can't confirm.)

This is the opposite problem I suppose, but I have noticed that the

I had a similar experience with Applecare (in the UK). The Powerbook was
returned with my 512mb chip taped to the outside, labelled 'suspect 3rd-
party memory'. Apple eventually offered the explanation that after
replacing the logic board, the pb was crashing at startup with the RAM in
place.

I sent it back to them, with a note inside explaining politely that the
module had been in place for 2.5 years, through several system upgrades
and a firmware upgrade, and that although I realised that RAM can go bad
at any time, I thought it very unlikely that the RAM was the problem.

The machine came back with the RAM reinstalled, working perfectly.

I've been using it for several months (pismo 500/640. 10.3.4) -
absolutely no problems. I think the warning is an indication of the
author's honesty rather than the software's fragility - he clearly

Mail prefs are now stored in the prefs of the Apple Mail app itself, and
browser prefs in Safari's prefs (yes, one of Apple's less bright ideas).

BTW, if you want Netscape to launch mailto: links in Eudora rather than

If you want to use the internal Airport slot, yes. You can use a 3rd-
party 802.11g (this is the standard which Apple brands "Airport Extreme")
card in the PCMCIA slot; it's not as neat, and there are issues about
compatible drivers - see this list's archives of the last couple of weeks

Just to set this thread off on yet another tangent :), it's worth bearing
in mind when shopping for routers that although router admin is normally
through a browser, and therefore more or less cross-platform, some
routers are less accommodating when it comes to firmware upgrades. My
(extremely cheap 'n' cheerful) router requires a PC of less than 900MHZ,

hoping I never need to do it :)

I should say that most aren't as bad as this, but many do require a

I've found the reference I was thinking of; it's

Here's an excerpt:

The Li-ion batteries prefer a shallow discharge. Partial discharges produce
less wear than a full discharge and the capacity loss per cycle is reduced. A
periodic full discharge is not required because the lithium-based battery has
no memory. A full cycle constitutes a discharge to 3V/cell. When specifying
the number of cycles a lithium-based battery can endure, manufacturers
commonly use an 80 percent depth of discharge. This method resembles a
reasonably accurate field simulation. It also achieves a higher cycle count
than doing full discharges.

This depends on which type of battery you're talking about. I think what you
say is correct for Ni-Cads, but my understanding is that the life of Li-on
batteries, as used in the pismo, is determined by the number of 'deep
discharges', i.e. running the battery down fully. So it's better _not_ to let
it run down fully any more than you have to.

Sorry I can't provide a source for this claim; my PB, containing the relevant
URL, is being fixed by Apple at the moment!

I'm confused. I thought the 1st gen TiBooks inherited their slow FW bus
from the pismo, which is basically the same m'board design. I remember
reading that the first white iBooks had a faster bus than both pismo and

(Just a pismo/500 here, so nothing to compare it with.)

One advantage of separate partitions is that you can hold down the

Does it actually require .Mac? ISTR when I was on the Mail.app mailing

the Mail developers enabled that feature. I don't recall it requiring
anything other than Mail itself, but maybe Apple marketing changed that.
