I'm running an icebook 500 with panther, and it's great. Sure, there are
faster machines out there, but I'm more than happy with this beast. I tried
a clamshell, and found it to be quite snappy under OS 9, but you could
certainly notice the older 300 Mhz processor in X. Don't get me wrong, the
clamshells are beautiful machines, but they were never designed for OS X.

If it were my money, I would aim for the newest machine I could get with
it's memory maxed out. I have heard many stories of FAST machines getting
quite average benchmarks due to a lack of system memory. I have 640
megabytes, and I love each and every one.

By the way, If you plan to use a wireless network, I would steer towards an
iBook ("AlBooks" have fixed the problems with the TiBooks, but I believe
don't start in 9, same with iBook G4). A TiBook with PC card is also a
solution.

I certainly agree with other listers comments regarding migrating to X. I
was hesitant on this machine to move over, but after doing so, I couldn't
believe I didn't do it sooner. About a month after switching, I removed
every trace of OS 9.

Good luck in your 'book-hunt,

Wiebe.

I have heard of someone on this list (might have been the iBooks list, I'm

What type of planes to FedEx use? I thought it was mostly the boeing
747/737/777-type, which are pressurised. I don't think there are many planes

Perhaps just look for something that specifically can deal with heat - ram
gets warm :-). Why do you need to tape it in the first place?

Re: G3/Mac OS X Settlement

2003-10-29 Thread Wiebe Wilbers
After reading many, many posts on this topic, (and a lot of those getting a
little heated) could I just point out that there are an enormous number of
people out there using the Macintosh, (yes, it is maybe only a small number
compared to windows, but it is still a big number.) Inevitably, not all of
those are going to have the latest and greatest machines, and as has already
been mentioned, Macs seem to last a while, so chances are that of all the
³affected² machines, a good number of them are still being used by this very
diverse Macintosh community.

Instead of getting overly angry at each other, perhaps just take a step
back, acknowledge that different people 'think different' (hint hint...) and
move on. If you want to sue, go ahead, if you don't, then don't. Personally
I agree with the opinion of 'it will com back and bite you in the ass'.

As for the various arguments of whether or not this hardware works with that
driver, if you want people to believe what you are saying, you will need to
provide proof. The 'because I say so' attitude in various posts isn't overly
convincing, and will only fuel the argument.

I do not mean to insult anyone with this post, but rather wish to encourage
us all to 'cool down'.

My 2 cents.

Wiebe.

Running 10.2.8 on a 500Mhz iBook and loving it.

Re: Pismo, Bluetooth, and a T616

Here in Australia, they usually let us try it out before buying one. I did
this with a compact-flash adapter for a 1400c. Maybe take your trusty Mac
into whatever shop is nearby and try it out (you don't have to BUY it there
of course, just try it :-)

The USB ones work great, plus, they are quite compact, and not at all
expensive...

The Bus is the same speed (Compared to 12" PB) and you can get them at the
same processor speed, but other than that, I agree with you. It's a shame
they demoted the 12" iBook to the bottom rung - it used to be you could get
the 12" in speeds up to the top available (900Mhz) or the 14". I like the
size of the 12" more than that of the 14". Ahh well, can't please them all I
suppose...

I wonder who is making these chips? Is it IBM or Motorola. PLEASE tell me
they went with big blue...

PC66, so I can definitely say it is possible with regard to the sped

Well, I have had a similar problem with my iBook in the past, which was
solved by using a magnet to find the polarity of the magnet in the bottom

You can replace it of course, as was specified in a different message, or
you could just go to eBay and get some cheap PCMCIA modem, and use that. A
lot less stuffing around. Not a great solution, I admit, just thought I
would throw the idea out there. Personally, I would prefer the internal

If the wireless LAN you end up getting is 802.11b or 802.11g, then just go
ahead and plug an airport card in (airport standard, not the newer 'extreme'
version). That will equip your iBook to run on any 802.11b/g wireless
network.
In the more and more unlikely event it is an 802.11a system, you have a
little less luck. There may be a USB solution, but I don't know of one. Your
iBook (like all others) has no PC card slot, so there is no way of adding
any kind of card to it other than apple's own Airport card.

FWIW, I run an iBook that uses an airport card to connect to a Netgear
access point, then through a generic switch of some sort to a windows box,
where it is routed out to the net using the built in internet connection
sharing of Win XP. No 2 brands are alike, but it all works well.

If you have any influence on which wireless network you get, try to aim for
either the 802.11b or 802.11g systems. 'b' runs at 11Mbps, 'g' runs at
55Mbps. 'g' is backwards compatible with the 'b' that your iBook uses (with
help from the airport card)

Hope this helps,

Wiebe.

have a good LCD with a good frame (or a crappy LCD with a crappy frame...)

I asked this earlier, but I'll ask again: Why do you want to boot into 9 in
the first place? For me, on my iBook 500 OS 9 runs a bit snappier, but the
difference in speed is far outweighed by the difference in stability of the
only-a-little-bit slower OS X.

Is there some program that you desperately need? Or do you simply prefer OS
9?

You can do it wirelessly too. Have one of them set up it's own airport
network, then have the other connect to it.

I don't know any of your details as far as OS versions you are running,

They were out about the same time. The 7500 had the strength of an
upgradeable CPU card, where the 7200 didn't. The 7300 was the upgrade to the

Kind of off-topic though...

I use a Belkin USB Bluetooth adapter with my iBook 500 in x.2.6 without any
worries. I use iSync to synchronize between the iBook and a Sony Ericsson
T610. The whole system works well, but I don't know how it would go if you
went iSync >> PCMCIA >> USB... Don't know why it WOULDN'T work either.

Maybe try the Irda thing again, it would save lugging 2 different adapters
around all the time. I have no experience with this one though

I would imagine a few things would factor in:

The 700 has more memory, so it may well be ale to spin down the hard drive
more often, resulting in lower power consumption. Worked like that in OS 9,
but I'm not sure how that goes in OS X

Have you run the 900 from full right down to nothing yet? That will set up
the power management settings, and the battery estimate will be more
accurate after that.

The Airport card might make a difference too...

There may also be a difference in the batteries, try switching them over,
and see what happens.

Just some thoughts,

Wiebe.

Did you try with just a plain Ethernet cable? I don't know which models were

Hello t.

Not trying to be a smart-ass here, but could you try to use some punctuation

In fact, the only time you used a period, was after your name!! :-)

As for the Lombard install, I doubt it would be the new hard drive, surely

Possibly, or, maybe we only notice it when USING iTunes ;). Other than

Re: Beyond wall street

2003-08-14 Thread Wiebe Wilbers
I have the first white iBook made, 500Mhz, 8MB Video Ram. I have it maxed
out at 640MB of ram, and it runs X just fine. It doesn't feel sluggish at
all, and I am comparing that to an 800Mhz G4 iMac!! (with 768MB ram).

That said, go for the newest (fastest) model you can get. I am not able to
get Quartz Extreme to take advantage of the graphics card, due to the small
memory, and (I assume) inferior card itself. I have heard that makes a lot
of difference in speed (Again, I can vouch for that, when I updated the
iMac, it was much better in 10.2 than in 10.1).

I usually Run MS Office, Dreamweaver, iTunes, MS Remote Desktop. Just to
give you an idea of my usage with this machine. What are you using yours
for?

Re: Wireless Encryption

2003-08-02 Thread Wiebe Wilbers
Personally, I have 128-bit encryption running at home. The router needed a
hex-value put in, with the same numbers to be entered into the iBook. In OSX
that¹s a snap - make the airport menu appear on the menu bar (can't remember
where I turned that on...) and select the name of your access point. It will
then ask for a password. There is a pull-down menu, which I set to 128-bit
hexadecimal, then entered the same number I did with the access point. No
$'s or anything else, just the numbers.

Hope it helps,

Wiebe.

Which is why I also gave the example of the 1400(Yes, I realise there are
subtle differences between a 1997 powerbook, and a 2001 machine :-) I know
the IceBooks have a better track record on wireless reception, but I also
have read (here, and elsewhere) that the TiBooks are (at times) able to hold
their own at well. If the wireless reception is barely able to surf the net
at 35ft in a line-of-sight, I think there would HAVE to be something wrong
with it...

I don't think any of those except 256 are achievable. 640MB is the maximum
RAM the machine will take - It has 128Meg built in, and one slot, which is
filled as standard with a 128MB module, giving the base 256MB.

If you remove the standard 128Meg card, replace it with a 512, you will max
out at 640MB.

Same deal as the iBooks if I am not mistaken...

iBook Battery

2003-07-14 Thread Wiebe Wilbers
Hello All,

I have a white 500Mhz iBook, whose battery seems to be all but dead. It
manages to hold about 20 mins of charge... Does anyone have any miracle
tricks for reviving an old battery?

I enquired about re-packing it, but that was going to cost about the same as
a new one (I have bought a second (new) battery, but want to see if I can
give the original a bit more life)

Thanks,

Re: Buying new Powerbook

2003-07-14 Thread Wiebe Wilbers
Biggest question is what do you intend to do with the machine? If it just a
word processor and internet/chat machine, then a wallstreet or clamshell
iBook would do. (For video-out, a later model iBook would be needed.)

I have only recently upgraded to a white iBook (from a 1400). Man, this
thing is cool. Just the fact that it has all the modern connectivity points
the 1400 either needed PC cards for, or was simply not able to have at all
(eg, modem, ethernet, video out, USB etc etc) Of course, the screen is a joy
to use too. Much better resolution.

The pismo has more upgrade paths, making it probably a better buy, (I wanted
a small computer - no bigger than a 12" screen) mainly because it can become
very fast (not that it is at all slow to start with). G4 Processor, 1 GB
ram, PC card slot for whatever you want.

In the end, buy the machine to suit your needs would be my advice.

Wiebe.

Re: transferring files to Wintel over home network?

2003-06-27 Thread Wiebe Wilbers
Yes, is IS strange, and I don't know why it happens. The only thing I could
think of is that when it wakes from sleep, it gets a different IP from the
server, and thus confuses the file sharing. If I re-start file sharing (ie,
turn off, then on again) all is ok (Usually).

Very confusing, and often frustrating.

I have switched to a static IP, and will see if it makes a difference...

on my XP box, all computers can connect to it (OS 8.1, 8.6, 9.2.2, X.2), and
