losing value....

2002-05-31 Thread Aron Nelson

That and the fact that PC's lose their value far faster than Mac's.

How much is my TiBook 550Mhz which I bought 3 months ago worth now,
compared to new then :-)

Actually on the PC side, I haven't found this to be the case. If you
buy the lower end - say a Pentium 4 @ 1.8Ghz! = $899, it doesn't hurt
that much to lose a few hundred on the price.

Re: stuck pixel repair for Wallstreet 300?

2002-05-30 Thread aron nelson

Sometimes this works, but rarely permanently; usually, you'll get
it to disappear for a few hours, until the next time the display is bumped,
or until the next time the computer is restarted.

I have had a Duo 2300 and Wallstreet that both had a bad pixel. I
massaged the darn thing and it did indeed clear up. It's weird that
it worked.

After that, I was lucky, the bad pixels never came back.

Sometimes other pixels started acting up, then I rubbed them and they
went away.

So I guess it's worth a try.

Re: BLUECHIP

2002-05-30 Thread Aron Nelson

Does this mean that I can exceed my
Powerbooks specifications and move up to 512 without
any negative reprocussions?

Absolutely NOT. For example, I HAD a 256MB DIMM in my powerbook. It
worked flawlessly with my previous Powerlogix card and with the Apple
card.

After receiving my replacement Powerlogix card (which was bad
initially BTW), the 256MB RAM is no longer compatible.

So even though it worked fine for 2 cards, all of a sudden it's out
of spec which is totally @#$#%#@$ if you ask me.

I don't believe it all of a sudden came out of spec.

They were the WORST company I have ever dealt with.

Re: TiBook not recognizing RAM module

2002-05-30 Thread Aron Nelson

my TiBook 550 hasn't recognized either one of them. It appears to
meet Apple specs: PC 133 low-profile SDRAM (that's what it says on
the module itself.

I am so confused about this whole issue.

Apparently from what little I have read, our TiBook needs PC100
memory. However, it supposedly can take PC133. We have a 100Mhz bus
as opposed to 133.

Now read this response I got from Powerlist:

The EEprom on most SoDIMMS only contain two different timing settings.
A PC100 module only contain the settings for PC66 and PC100 and a
PC133 module only for PC133 and PC100.
This means that most PC133 modules won't work in a system with a PC66 bus.

So, from the above, YES your computer should be able to use the PC133
module since it contains info for 133 and 100.

Can you tell me what kind of module is currently in your TiBook? Is
it 133 or 100 (the memory that came from Apple).

If it's PC100, then I should be able to use it in my Wallstreet.

Anyway, I have two 256MB modules coming in, I will let you know how mine goes.

Thanks,

Aron

Re: BLUECHIP

2002-05-30 Thread Aron Nelson

That is the worst horror story I have ever heard.

Well, maybe not the worst :-) Still bad though.

I also think that OWC should have pulled the contract
with PL.

Maybe so... well, they said they have changed how they deal with Powerlogix.

FWIW: Apparently Sonnet is better - they _did_ go through a round
where they were putting lower clock rate marked chips on boards,
but apparently this was a manufacturer marking and not indicative
of the actual rated speed of the chip. whatever

Anyway, Newer Tech is going back online - they had some cool products.

Back to Powerlogix. After receiving my modded and fixed board,
their attitude towards me changed radically. They insist that my RAM
is out of spec even though it worked with their prior board(s) and
the Apple Board.

Actually I forgot, it's 3 to one. I had:

Apple Board - RAM works.
1st Powerlogix board 466 - RAM works.
2nd Powerlogx Board RAM works.
Last Powerlogix board - RAM does not work.

Sorry, I meant REV A -- was faster for audio.

off, the Firewire and Graphics card is much faster for Rev B.

This part is correct.

Everything I have read has said that it was the opposite, that while the
rev.B has strengths, audio was not one of them due to the lack of cache and
the PPC used had half the memory bandwidth compared to the older 7410.

Correct.

Re: TiBook vs G3 Wallstreet

2002-05-23 Thread Aron Nelson

I recently upgraded from a Wallstreet to a TiBook

Me too.

are not ideal, in general it's been a big win and I don't regret it
at all.'

Yep

My biggest complaint on my Rev B version was lack of audio in (but I
knew this) and the generally flimsy design.

I have to take my watch off when using it or use a cloth to protect
the powerbook. I had mine for 2 weeks when I noticed the paint was
chipping off due to my watch. Of course this never happened in 4
years of using my Wallstreet (since it's plastic).

The Wallstreet is stronger, has more ports (due to PC cards), and is
almost as fast for most things (due to processor upgrade).

In general though, the TiBook is nice although I think for me, the
Wallstreet was the best Apple computer I owned. It has all the ports
(SCSI, Serial, USB, Firewire), is totally compatible with OS 9 and X
and was built like a tank.

My TiBook is probably the nicest looking Mac I have ever owned
although fragile.

Re: TiBook Screen Scratches

2002-05-22 Thread aron nelson

I've had many, many people bring theirs to me, claiming these were
scratches and every last one of them, I could easily buff out
with a moist cloth.

You might want to go to the apple support forums and tell the many
users that have posted about their scratches that they can easily
buff out marks. :-)

Seriously, most have tried.

I think it has something to do with the disintegrating screen rubber
stoppers etc and the tight tolerances.

Let's not get into the bad paint issue which is certainly real as well.

I wouldn't be surprised to start seeing companies offer screen
protectors like they use on Palm Pilots and Newtons..

I think at least two companies offer the protectors (clothes for
protecting the screens).

The weirdest thing is before I bought my TiBook, all I heard is how
good the units were. After I received it, then I mistakenly went on
the Apple forum site and man. I've never seen so many problems
with an Apple product!

I could choose between the Rev A and Rev B and too bad I didn't know

Re: G3 Powerbook/Powerlogix

2002-05-13 Thread Aron Nelson

Please understand also that every minute they spend reading (AND RESPONDING
TO)

Well that's not a problem since unless I write they don't respond.

PowerLogix is not the size of Amoco, and unless I'm an idiot, I doubt
seriously that they have the capital to hire a whole new staff to deal with
this issue.

Well they should have thought of that before putting out defective cards twice.

And I'm equally sure that they, just like everyone else involved,
hopes this is resolved asap..

Look David,

Please read the posts online. Some people have been waiting since
December of last year.

What does that tell you? This is not just a small company trying to do good.,

I don't want to get into this but there's even more than you know. I
know this because you wouldn't even be trying to defend them if you
knew the latest.

I know they have been quick to replace for some resellers, but I have
a list of people that have been waiting months, including myself.

BTW: I got my replacement and it was bad as well. They seemed to
recognize the problem too.

Re: Can't play DVD on TV

2002-05-06 Thread Aron Nelson

Joshua,

I went through this... it's terrible. YES there is a problem and it's
mainly with the terrible documentation.

Here's the deal, the DVD player on my system does exactly what you
said. It gives an error. I've tried everything until I read on the
Apple's forum that the real problem is the DVD player being unable to
play except on the main screen.

What is the main screen? Well it's the one with the menu bar on it.
In addition, you cannot be mirroring.

So. Turn off mirroring - the powerbook will be one display, the TV another.

Now go to the monitors control panel in SYSTEM 9, and click on
arrange and move the menu bar to the TV.

Now you should be able to view the DVD on the TV. Set the resolution
to 780X4XX??? something like that - I don't have the PB here.

Choose full screen or the equivalent.

I have NOT been able to do this under OS X since OS X does not have
an arrange tab in the monitors control panel.

How do you do this under OS X?

Re: Good, inexpensive digital camera

2002-04-19 Thread Aron Nelson

Of all the good points you brought up, this one is the killer for me.

I was TOTALLY into my digital camera until I recently went to a party
and I wanted to take pictures FAST.

NO WAY! I got one shot off and had to wait while the damn thing took
its time getting ready for the next shot. Not only that, the flash
takes a while to charge up too.

That alone is painful.

Aron

there is always a delay when shooting--so you cannot use electronic
cameras to take any action shots. I have tried a couple of
cameras and they all want to do stuff before you shoot--instead of
letting you shoot.

Re: Good, inexpensive digital camera/Lag time

2002-04-19 Thread Aron Nelson

That is not a basic problem of digital cameras. That is a basic problem of
the model you have.

Apparently most/all Digital cameras have lag time after the shot. I
have tried many at CompUSA and Circuit City and they all had lag
after shooting.

The lag times are even parts of the review process on web sites now.

Do you have one that doesn't have any lag after shooting?

Re: Good, inexpensive digital camera/Lag time

2002-04-19 Thread aron nelson

Most digital cameras have a continuous shoot mode which allows you to shoot
a number of shots fairly quickly (until your buffer runs out)

Right, I have this, but this is a compromise.

Anyway, back to Powerbooks!

Re: Weird Wallstreet Battery problem

2002-04-18 Thread Aron Nelson

It sounds like it could be, but that could also be your battery. What
exactly happens whey you reset the battery?

Well, I found out I have more problems, but thanks. Anyway, I reset
the battery, zapped the power manager and it still comes up showing a
full battery.

Anyway, I got the 4 year service contract so it goes back to
service.net soon. I hope they are good.

Thanks,

Weird Wallstreet Battery problem

2002-04-17 Thread aron nelson

Just recently my Battery shows totally dead with the LEDs and button
on the side of it.

However in OS 9 the battery shows as totally FULL. Even if I swap it
into the right bay, the control strip and clock/battery icon shows
totally full.

I have tried Battery Reset and Power Management Reset but it still shows full.

Of course it isn't. I can unplug the power adaptor and it will shut right off.

Does it sound like the PMU Board?

Thanks,

Aron

Re: Good, inexpensive digital camera

2002-04-15 Thread Aron Nelson

1.3 Megapixels, I feel, is not good enough for average photograhy.
For web stuff,
fine. 2.1 is kind of a minimum, I feel, to decent photography.

The weird part is that I have seen 1.3 megapixel pictures printed out
that are great. I wonder how they do that??

I have a 2 megapixel camera and it's ok. I have seen some nice 1 MP
pictures though.

Re: First powerbook maybe

2002-03-30 Thread aron nelson

To add to Brian's excellent post I add this:

If you get a Powerbook and like the freedom it gives, be prepared to
have a very difficult time going back to only a desktop. It's
addicting.

Be prepared for the most part to have a slower machine than a desktop
AND to pay more for it. Be prepared to have less upgrades available
and to have less disk storage onboard.

Get insurance like safeware.com - it's worth it $50/year for $2000 coverage.

Get used to envious people eyeing your powerbook just because it's awesome.

Re: Win2k on VPC on Tibook

2002-03-19 Thread aron nelson

It's not that bad. Win2k on a TiBook 550 is very usable.

Well, I am willing to post performance results. I have used PC since
the DOS days and this is really slow. Maybe Win2K is better but Win
98 is dog slow. I would say unusable.

Here's a recommendation for the more technically inclined - at
www.98lite.net, they have an app that will allow you to remove IE from
Windows 98.

I guess I could see how that might speed it up a little, but this is
basic operating speed slow.

For even more speed, and if you have a Win95 install CD handy, you can
download another app from them that will allow you to substitute the slower
Win98 explorer shell for the Win95 explorer shell.

I believe the Win95 shell is faster but even so, this is really slow.

So are you running VPC under OS X??

I would be interested in how you are getting it to be useable - mine
is complete unacceptable.

As I said, Win 95 under OS 9 (not classic) is very useable.

Re: Win2k on VPC on Tibook

2002-03-18 Thread Aron Nelson

VPC on a tiBook running classic will feel like a 200-300 mhz Pentium or
Pentium II, maybe, depending on what you're doing with it. (note not P3
or P4)

For grins, try running Windows 95 under Classic in VPC.Quite fast and
useable. Too bad you really need Win 98 for most stuff - then it's
back to slow.

For tears, try checking out VPC under OS X, it's like a 486 running Windows 98.
