Yes. And, according to Laurent, phoenix-at-cybernothing.org is
subscribed to the Google g-books list.

Whenever I try to post to the Google-based list, I get:

I get the same problem. Confirmation I've subscribed but I can't post.
I've also done the unsubscribe resubscribe thing as well with no joy.

It took a lot of ambitious Type A personalities to put that together.
I was an academic hanger-on (I think that's what the then-gov., someone
dufus named Reagan, called people like me). I was happy to go home,
every evening, to the Haight, smoke dope, and write stories.
Those guys went on to the U of Chicago as part of carefully negotiated
career moves; I think the computer stuff was really secondary to their
ambitions.

I can confirm that the current version of the Linksys wpc54gs card works
fine with the Airport software, no additional drivers required.

Version 1 of wpc54g card also works fine but the Version 2 card does not
as it does not have the Broadcom chipset in it.

The advantage of these cards over all the others is WPA support, the
IOExpert and Orange drivers currently only support WEP.

The DLink usb (DWL-122 from memory) also works, again with no WPA
support, only WEP.

I drag all my laptops around powered up and never give any thought to
how I plug or unplug them either. One thing my T41 laptop does have that
the powerbook I own doesn't is drop protection for the hard drive so if
I ever did drop the powerbook while it was on I may loose data but
that's all backed up anyway. So it is paranoid but with a very real
touch of reality to suggest not carrying it around powered up. If its
asleep it should be really safe though.

The PB G4 has a line in jack, so a $2 Radio Shack RCA to 3.5mm adaptor

Re: Intel IMacs

2006-01-11 Thread Michael Cangelosi
Interesting; with this switch to the beginning of abandoning Classic
(not only booting to OS9 but rather the entire software that runs under
classic) 10.4.X will probably be the last OSX that will include any
support for classic at all.

And the answer is: Who knows!

The statement has been made that if the application needs "Classic" to
run, then it will not run on the new machines.

If it runs under the latest versions of OS X, then it will run on the
new machines.

Re: Intel Macs....

2006-01-11 Thread Michael Cangelosi
Though the term "Low-End-Mac" seems inappropriate for a 2K - 2.5K
laptop; the common underpinning under all of these computers is the OS.
While unfortunately the latest Al-Books don't allow booting to OS9, and
there are some discussions on this list regarding OS9 problems; this
lack of functionality hasn't stopped the inclusion of said 'books. One
of the most effective things regarding the Apple system is the community
that has built around it, and welcomed new Win'tel converts. Whether
you believe this latest move on Apple's part is good or bad, to begin to
dissolve that community for simply a means of protest against a bit of
silicon seems silly and does a disservice to this list and the potential
transfer of knowledge through discussion.

Re: HOWTO Boot Powerbook from Firewire drive

2006-01-06 Thread R Michael Vogt
no it will be just like your boot drive like you have it running
right now all the custom stuff and all the Apps that you have put on it
you can do this with any drive that you want to backup.I do this all
the time when I put in New drive I use the old drive as source and
the new drive as the destination drive and it can be firewire drive
if need be or USB drive

Not sure I understand this. As I see it, when you use "Restore", it
will
restore the disk to the factory defaults, exactly like when you
received

Or, there is something I don't understand in the above instructions...

At least, that is, I think it does.

Truth is, I don't know if it would actually boot if I needed to,
and now that I've Googled around a bit, I can't seem to find out
for sure.

The closest I've found is this:

"Command-Shift-Option-Delete bypasses the disk selected in the
Startup Disk control panel in favor of an external device or from
CD-ROM (on older Macs). This is also useful if your main hard disk
is having problems and you need to start up from another device.
(On some PowerBooks, however, this key combination merely ignores
the internal drive, which isn't as useful.)"

I'd like to find something on Apple's website. I tried searching
there and had no luck there either.

It's not the sort of thing I'm want to try without a little
assurance I'm on the right track.

2006-01-05 Thread Michael Levin

On Jan 5, 2006, at 6:02 AM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Bruce has pretty well summed up the problem with the survey.

Actually, it is an issue with all surveys other than those surveys
that rely on student samples. Students usually receive bonus points
or participation points for completing surveys, and, thus, are
externally motivated to complete the survey. Other than that
instance, respondents are motivated by internal factors. Emotions,
positive or negative, are internal factors. If I really love the
product line, or the brand, then I want to tell the world about my
emotion to the point of obnoxiousness. Conversely, if I really
despise the product line, or the brand, then I want to tell the world
about my emotion to the point of obnoxiousness.

However, if like the vast majority of customers, I really do not
possess strong emotions positively or negatively about the product
line, or the brand. Thus, I am very unmotivated to complete a survey.

If there is an inducement such as my church or my philanthropy gets a
$1 for every completed survey, or my name goes into a drawing for an
iPod, then I more likely to complete the survey then if there is no
reward. However, this issues takes us back to external motivation.
Yes, survey results are called into question when a reward is used.
Are the results valid? Is there a bias? How can you be sure the
results would be consistent if there had been no reward?

Generally speaking, these are some of the inherent problems with
surveys as a research methodologies. Researchers look at nonresponse
bias, which is what Bruce essentially refers to in his post. One top
marketing academic journal pretty much eschews survey research.
Almost all economics journals do not publish surveys, which is
laughable. Some psychology journals as well as consumer behavior
journals are moving towards experiments only, which have their own
methodological issues.

I am not privy to the questionnaire, how the data was collected, what
analysis was used, etc. If I had to guess though, I would wager that
the survey would not pass academic review. Just a hunch.

Agreed. When you charge a premium for the product, tell your customer
that the warranty does not cover any defects (and besides the issue
is obviously user related wear and tear and not piss poor
manufacturing and/or design), then you should either A) expect your
customer base to become irate or B) stand behind your warranty. Apple
*appears* to opt for the first choice. At some point, Apple became
the Mercedes Benz of the computing world (or did Mercedes Benz morph

Re: Pismo won't power up

2005-11-24 Thread Michael Organ
Thanks for the advice. It was the Pram battery, which I had recently
replaced. I put the old one back in and it fired right up.

BTW, I had checked the A/C adapter and it tested good (120vac in - 18vdc
out), so I was assuming that it was something internal.

Thanks again to all who replied.

If the internal battery is discharged, then I think it won't power up.
Actually, if I recall correctly, the PRAM battery, which is fed from the
main battery, is the one causing the problem.

Do you know if your adapter is charging or not? It needs to put some charge
in the main battery so the PRAM will recharge.

You can always try the Command + Control + Power to see what happens...

Re: what's that burning smell?

2005-11-16 Thread Michael Cangelosi
Poof and smell -- sounds like a component with some sort of electrolytic
or fluid that could overheat.

Some suspects:

Main battery

Pram battery

Capacitor/maybe a transformer on the motherboard

Display itself

Any of those suspects would not be a fun diagnosis, and if it's a part
of the mother(logic)-board, then that's an expensive fix.

If you have another ibook you could test both batteries mentioned.
Volt/Multi-meters should be included with every home mortgage - I use
mine more often than my circular saw.

Subject: what's that burning smell?

Hey all,

I sent this over the weekend, but got no response. In the hopes that
this was just due to Monday morning list overload, I thought I'd try
again. I'm particularly interested in any feedback about other potential
sources of the original video problem, so that I can disclose fully if I
end up eBaying the carcass.

So: The saga is over. This weekend I took apart my dual usb iBook 3
separate times to install a used (reportedly good) display. After the
first two times, it all seemed fine for a few minutes, then flickered in
an out, then finally the backlight went off. The third time the
backlight never came on, but I could vaguely see the screen; enough to
power down. I sat there and finished watching a football game, iBook
powered down and closed on my lap, when suddenly I heard a >popf<, kind
of like a Christmas tree bulb had blown. A metallic, burned-fuse kind of
smell wafted from the back of the grill. I immediately removed the
battery and resigned as chief mac mechanic of our household.

As I sort through the wreckage in an attempt to salvage what still
works, I have a few questions of those wiser than me.

1. What was that >popfing< sound, that smell? Dare I try to boot again?

2. I gathered from this list that a dead screen iBook that will still
run an external monitor has a problem with the reed switch, the screen,
or the backlight/inverter board. All of these are in the display
assembly, right. The display I purchased was putatively good, but
appeared to have the same problem as the original. Is there anything
else that might have caused my problem, or was the second screen
possibly defective as well?

Thanks for any and all information

Erik

It's a way to share info between two devices using infrared as the
carrier--think about a universal TV remote control-pulses of infrared to
send signals to do different things. You can use the IR function to
share files between compatible computer types too--I once installed MS
Office from one of my PB 5300's to another via IR just to see how it
would work. The two machines had to be literally inches apart for
anything to happen, and the file copying took well over an hour--not a
fast process, but if someone had no cabling available to them, it was
doable. (I'd never do it again myself, tho. :) )

Screen Effects

2005-11-01 Thread Michael Cangelosi
G-list:

I have a Lombard 512MB - RAM; 40G HD 333 MHz 10.2.8

I would like to use screen effects on my main photos folder with approx
4000 files.

Easy to set up, and I have the preferences correct, but it only displays
for ~3 minutes then goes to a black screen -- as though there's simply
too many files to process, or an attempt to cycle through only 20 or so
pics.

Does anyone have any suggestions/similar experiences?

Michael J. Cangelosi.

This is simply not true. I have a 256 MB flash drive, and I installed
OS 9 on it, which booted my Pismo via USB without a hitch. Whoever told
you that is probably in the interest of wanting you to upgrade to a new
computer altogether.

Re: Max RAM

2005-10-27 Thread Michael Cangelosi
You may have high density ram on one chip, thus instead of 256 it would
address to 124 (plus a bit of change on both chips) thus the 384 --
still a usable amount, just not what you were expecting.

I recently upgraded the RAM in my 400mhz Lombard with two 256mhz chips

go to 512mb on the Lombard, but I'm only seeing 384mb. Am I mistaken or
am I doing something wrong?

Yes it doesn't consistently display [g-books] however, why not just set

I have the same issue - sometimes there is no "header" [G-Books] in the

I use Eudora as my email program, if that matters...

What kind of lab do you work in? I've *never* seen SCSI-connected
instrumentation. What a frickin' configuration nightmare! It's bad
enough dealing with the HDD's and CD roms of the old workstations that
use SCSI...

Serial, yes, HPIB, yes, most modern Chem/Biochem instrumentation is
actually coming with ethernet nowadays, but not SCSI.

Actually, USB didn't replace SCSI. The Lombard is a perfect example.
Only with the Pismo and Blue & White G3 and the introduction of FireWire
that SCSI was no longer standard.

No...you have to have on-board FW for FW TDM, as it's a part of the ROM.
The Lombard doesn't support it.

As for a boot disk, you would be best served buying a copy of your

Re: Hard Drive Exchange

2005-08-31 Thread Michael Cangelosi
Yep -- dual boot, I've never made a boot disk before; is this a topic in
the g-book FAQ's?

Secondly, with a PCMCIA firewire card can I use target disk mode with a
blank hard drive?

Sounds like the way to go.

Are you running X? (Sounds like maybe yes since you mention hidden
files.) If so, you could use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper or
Silverkeeper or Apple's own Disk Utility to copy the current internal
drive to the new drive in the external housing. It will be very slow
since you just have USB1 (unless you have a USB2 PC card) but I think it
should work.

It's really not a lot of work - it's pretty easy to pop a drive in or
out of most external housings.

You really should make your own boot cd if you don't have any - OS 9
the old-fashioned way, or if you run OS X then use BootCD.
Especially since you won't be able to boot off your old drive in the USB
case, and you don't have a firewire port (if you did I'd recommend a
firewire rather than USB case; you don't have a firewire card, do you?),
& I'm pretty certain no SCSI external HD.

Hard Drive Exchange

2005-08-31 Thread Michael Cangelosi
G-list:

I am currently upgrading the HD on my Lombard from 4 -> 40 GB.

I was just curious what others have done in a situation such as this.

I have no boot CD's (e-bay purchase) so I'm thinking of getting a
USB-enclosure for either drive, putting the 40 GB drive in, moving all
my data from the drive via so 9.2.2 to catch all the hidden files, then
swap the two hard drives in the enclosure/laptop.

This seems like it would work -- it also seems like a ton of extra work
- any other ideas???

Michael.

Re: REPOST: How can I connect Wallstreet II/ OS 9.2.2 to iBook 500/OS X 10.3.9?

2005-08-15 Thread Michael Cangelosi
If you can connect both of these to the internet simultaneously behind a
switch/router you should be able to see them on the network -- you could
even goto ipchicken.com to find the IP of the ibook, then try to telnet
into there from control-panels remote connect on the wallstreet using
that IP address -- then just log in like you would from the home log-in
screen of the ibook.

Isn't that right -- I'm looking for a confirmation from a more
expereinced poster here

Subject: REPOST: How can I connect Wallstreet II/ OS 9.2.2 to iBook
500/OS X 10.3.9?

Dear List-mate,

I didn't get a single response to this inquiry when I posted it a few
weeks ago; perhaps you can at least point me in the right direction?!

I imagined this was an easy question, but I've never done it, and don't
know how.

How do I connect two PowerBooks, a Wallstreet II running OS 9.2.2 and an
iBook 500, running OS X 10.3.9 to one another, so that I can copy files
from one to the other?

Here's the equipment I have available to me which might prove useful:

- USB A-B cables and a Belkin USB hub

- straight and crossover ethernet cables,

- D-Link DWL Wireless USB adapter,

- 2 USB Bluetooth adapters- a D-Link Bluetooth DBT-120, and a Mitsumi
CE0197,

- Belkin 802.11B PCMCIA CardBus Wireless Notebook Network Card F506020.

I don't know which device and/or cable to use, for what, and how. I
don't know whether to attach these before startup, which machine to
start first, which control panels to set up on each machine, and in what
order, etc.

Do any of these units require drivers which may need to be installed in
either system?

Does one of the machines have to be a master and the other a slave?

Does one of the operating systems have to have control over the other?

Have you ever done this? Please tell me how! If you really know how,
will you please explain it step-by-step?

Has someone written a simple guide to how to do this, which I can
download & read? I've checked MacHelp for "connecting two (or 2)
powerbooks" and have found nothing which seems to address this topic.

Also, if you're attempting to respond to this appeal, please be kind
enough to copy my email with your answer, to
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> since I've been receiving a large
percentage of "bounce" messages relating to postings to the list, and
therefore, I'm probably not seeing more than one in four or five.

Please give me any help you can! At least, please try to point me in the
right direction!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wisdom!

All the best,
stanton

(APOLOGIES if you already received this---I'm having some problems with
hooking up to the list.)

Hi everyone
I much appreciated the suggestions from you wonderful guys earlier this
year regarding a problem with my Wallstreet. It's now fixed!
It's a 300MHz Wallstreet; now I need to buy a printer and would greatly
welcome suggestions as to what brand/model I can/should buy.
I have a Powerprint serial to parallel cable version 4.5; a MacAlly USB
card; and a Firewire-2-go card.
My main priority is high-quality black/white text printing. (I'm not so
concerned about color/graphics.) Thanks for any recommendations you may
have.

Re: Getting Ripped off by Mac Mall

2005-08-12 Thread Michael Levin

Hi Jim,

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience. I would suggest that
you send a letter along with copies of any communication exchanges to
your Attorney General's office. Some states have a consumer fraud
division. Also, IIRC, the FTC maintains a consumer complain division.
Where is Mac Mall located? Send a letter along with copies of any
communication exchanges to the Attorney General in Mac Mall's home
state. Be sure to include the offer. If you really want to take the
matter further, go to small claims court.

Is there any way you can get New York state involved? Was your
product shipped from a warehouse in New York state? What about the
free merchandise? Did any of it come from New York state? New York
state has an excellent consumer protection division. When Compuserve
tried to shut off our service, we sent a letter to consumer
protection division. In less than 45 days, we had a full refund from
Compuserve and we were released from our service contract.

Good luck.

cheers,
Michael

Gary -- you have a CD drive not a DVD drive, apple doesn't support a DVD

I made the DVD on a DVD-R/VCR combo.

I guess now neither of my WS drives (internal CD-ROM or external

recognize the disk in some way so I could duplicate it with Toast.

Re: surge suppressors revisited

2005-06-23 Thread Michael J. Amato

Would a lightning rod have helped?

Or is it just too much power?

I had lightning strike a tree in my back yard and jump to the "skin" of my
house which is shingled in wood and was wet.

I only lost a fan, not my computer. Didn't damage the electric system.

Keyboard or keytops ?

Pismo, Wallstreet and Lombard are all different connectors.

The Clam keyboard uses the same connector as the Lombard but is mounted at a
90 degree angle.

I'm pretty sure that this hack would require some work to use it. Are you
sure that the keyboards are physically the same?

clamshell keyboard in a Lombard???

So I have discovered the joy's of applefritter.com to my disadvantage, and
spied a powerbook G3 with a white keyboard -- looked like an easy hack and I
have a potential donor (300 MHz clamshell w/o firewire)

Does anyone know if the bronze keyboard and the Clamshell white have the

Re: Synchronizing Treo 650

2005-06-19 Thread Rowan, Michael

For those that have exchange servers at work, I highly recommend Good
Technology's mail stuff. Runs on the 650, 600 or the old blackberry devices.
Its much better than versamail.

I guess its my years of blackberrying but I can thumb type at about 50 wpm...
Lol about graffiti ;-)

Is that different than the built-in "Mail" application? So far at
least, I have no plans to use the Treo for email. If I did, I'd have
to get a separate email address that only a few people have.
Otherwise, I'd get inundated with hundreds of email a day (I'm on
quite a few lists).

I don't have a PC, but I do have Virtual PC 6.x. I guess if I decide
to try VersaMail, I could see if I could install that way.

I've almost given up on thumb typing, even though the 650 supposedly
has the sensitivity to distinguish between a fully pressed key and an
accidentally pressed one. I do better holding the Treo in one hand
and typing with the index finger of the other. I also understand that
there's a third-party handwriting recognition program that's better
than Graffitti (in that it lets you train it rather than requiring
you to use a pre-determined method.

I'll give the keyboard some more time before I try that out though.
It's only been a couple of days.

Thanks.

I'll reply to you back channel about the Kyocera.

Re: Is Apple really moving to x86 architechture?! [signed]

2005-06-17 Thread Michael J. Amato [c]

Please remember all the hoopla about Apple shifting to Unix with OSX.
Cries of doomsday and a big Wass'up.

Apple shifting to an open system???

It's all been uphill pretty much.

The biggest problem Apple had with Motorola/IBM was delivering a faster chip
for their laptops, one of the bigger selling sectors.

There seems to be a wider horizon opening up. Intel is a chip making company
period. IBM had so little expertise they had to sell their computer
manufacturing unit. Remember IBM was responsible for Microsoft, practically
giving them DOS, figuring it wasn't worth much and clearing the way for BG
and crew to monopolize the OS for pc's.

Open vistas ahead, maybe even getting game for Mac!

I'm sure this is a well thought strategy for the future.
Hang on for the ride.

Re: Lombard snags [signed]

2005-06-16 Thread Michael J. Amato [c]
As a former Lombard owner I can empathize. It had a serious flaw on wake up
and was known as the "sleep of death". It would be worth it to send it to
Daystar - http://daystartechnology.com/ and upgrade. It solves your dvd
problem and gives you the altivec engine. Then you'll never have these
problems. (I was never able to get Panther on my Lombard -got a kernel
panic) I plan on upgrading.

There is also a person named Chuck Wright on e.Bay who specializes in
Lombards and has scads of parts. I bought a logic board from him and was
very satisfied with his handling of the sale.

He also turned me on to a website that has the service manual for the
Lombard (it's in pdf format)

 http://www.whoopis.com/computer_repair/PowerBook_G3_Series_Bronze_kbd.pdf

Happy sailing, (I really like the old Lomby)

BTW, I also remember it being picky about memory ups.

OS X.4 DVD on Wallstreet II

2005-06-13 Thread Michael Dolberry
I have been playing around with upgrading to X.4 on my
Wallstreets, using the new XPostFacto4. But I have run
into a snag.

I suspect that it is hopeless, but just wanted to
check.

Using the new XPostFacto 4, I can load the software
and recognize the DVD, even in OS 10.2. But when it
tries to load from the DVD at restart, it keeps
waiting for data, which the help site interprets as
"Not able to read the media".

I know that the DVD-decoder is not supposed to work in
OS X, but it appears to work in OS X.2. (I guess I
need to try to watch a movie and see.)

Does anyone have any further ideas or information, or
possibly a work-around which doesn't involve swapping
the drive? I can't try firewire mode. No firewire.

Just curious, before I tell the wife and teen, it's a
NO GO.

Shel

Re: powerbook g3 pismo battery problem

>From MacDaily News -

Report: Apple Mac OS X 10.4.1 for Intel hits piracy sites

Saturday, June 11, 2005 - 12:14 PM EST

Ā

"There is nothing at all that prevents the version of Mac OS X that runs on
the developer transition machines from running on any PC with compatible
components," Jeff Harrell writes for The Shape of Days. "The Intel-based
Power Macintoshes that Apple is showing at their developer conference are
based on an Intel motherboard, generic Intel graphics and off-the-shelf
Pentium 4 CPUs... I estimate that weĀ¹re down to a matter of hours before Mac
OS X 10.4.1 for Intel hardware is available for download on Internet
software piracy sites and peer-to-peer piracy networks. (Update: A reader
who for obvious reasons wishes to remain anonymous just demonstrated to me
that the software is, in fact, already available on Internet software piracy
sites.) If I can think through this stuff, AppleĀ¹s management can think
through this stuff. This is the most awe-inspiring stealth marketing move
IĀ¹ve ever seen."

"According to reports, AppleĀ¹s bundled iLife applications, major selling
points for the Mac operating system, are already Intel-native and run at
full speed... Given AppleĀ¹s experiences with software piracy, particularly
the rampant software piracy that spread developer builds of Mac OS X 10.4
Tiger all over the Internet this past spring, AppleĀ¹s management from the
top down knows full well that this developer preview will be in the hands of
every kid with a cable modem within days of its release. Most of them will
be able to install it on their own computers and run it and the full suite
of iLife Ā¹05 applications at full speed, and run most existing Mac software
in translation. As a result, Apple will give thousands, possibly millions,
of people a taste of Mac OS X running full speed on their own PCs. AppleĀ¹s
giving their potential future customers a free taste, thatĀ¹s what theyĀ¹re
doing. ItĀ¹s a try-before-you-buy deal," Harrell writes.

You will need to replace the unit that runs from the Book to the

works fine. Because I dawdled on buying a replacement cable, I had to
shell out $85 for a replacement Apple power cable. Hence, I have 2
units that have the long electric plug but only 1 cable that runs
from the Book to the adapter.

On the bright side, I unplug the cable at the adapter source and put
the Book and the adapter into my bag because I keep one long electric
cable at the house, one long electric cable at the office, and the
plug only in my bag (just in case).

I have a G3 wallstreet and I would like to bring it more update. I would
like to get it a faster processor (make it as fast as a G4), a bigger hard
drive, a wireless card, a more current OS, a usb port that supports a pen
drive and other peripherals. oh, and the power button is on the fritz
because it take pushing it down real hard to get it going.

I don't want to do this myself. I would like to ship it out and have all
this done. What do these kind of upgrades cost? I know it is cheaper to
buy all the different bits needed and do it myself, but I don't have the
patience. Is it worth it or should I just save up to buy a newer machine?
Can anyone recommend an upgrade service place that is reasonsable and
reliable?

Thanks

For those that wish to know I can confirm that the current version of
the Linksys wpc54gs card works fine with the Airport software, no
additional drivers required. Version 1 of wpc54g card also works fine
but the Version 2 card does not as it does not have the Broadcom chipset
in it. The advantage of this card over all the others is WPA support,
the IOExpert and Orange drivers currently only support WEP

For the record, and as I have said before, (sorry for repetition) if
anybody can cool a G5 Powerbook I can. My cooler design performs over
2.5 times better than a conventional cooler of the same size.

My desktop cooler cools better than water. Non exotic, direct to air.

But Apple will not sign my NDA (it's MY invention) and tell me 'we are
already working on something else' - before they receive disclosure!
How do they know what 'something else' is if they haven't seen what I
have?

The patent system is virtually completely ineffective at protecting
rights of individual inventors.

After Tiger... Cannot Print

2005-05-09 Thread Levin, Michael
I did a clean install of Tiger last week and had no problems. Documents printed
from Word to both printers (one at the office and the other at home) without a
problem.

Last night, I needed to print a document with very narrow margins on my home
printer. I set the margins in Word and tried to print. The document was chopped
off just as Word had predicted. Running the same version of Word in 10.2.8 and
using the same printer, I could print with the narrower margin settings.

I downloaded and installed the HP driver. I restarted the computer after
installation of the HP driver. I opened the document in Word and selected
File-Print. Word then crashed.

I repeated the process but attempted open-Apple and P. Word crashed.

I repeated the process and clicked the printer button on the tool bar. Only the
final page printed.

I shut the computer down, then took out the battery for about 30 seconds; put
the battery back in and restarted the computer. I opened Word tried to print
from File-Print. Word crashed.

I opened the document in AppleWorks; went to File-Print. AppleWorks crashed.

Because I need the document this morning, I e-mailed the document to my Wintel
machine, which printed the document with the smaller margins in Word to the
same printer as the Apple.

Any ideas or resultions as to why I can no longer print to Word or Apple Works?

Re: PowerBook G4 power supply issues

2005-04-21 Thread Michael Levin
There could be a short, probably caused by kink, in the line. The sudden
loss of power MAY not be sudden because you do not notice the monitor in the
upper right hand corner has switched from electrical supply to battery.

If that is not the culprit, take your Power Book to your local Apple
authorized repair shack. They should run a volt meter over the circuits to
determine if the Power Book is drawing adequate power from the plug or
battery.

Have your tried a different power cable and/or battery?

I would bet the power pack (the line that runs from the Power Book to the
electrical plug) is failing. I had the same occurrence and followed the same
advice as below.

Avoid that advice. Buy a new power pack. Apple's replacement goes for $80.
You can get those cheaper at

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Micro%20Accessories/ACADPTG4/
http://store.mcetech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=ACA
UTOG4-IB2001&Category_Code=ACCACAUTOADPT&Product_Count=4

The power pack is reason number 4 why I regret buying laptop from Apple.
They make a solid desktop system, the Cube notwithstanding. Laptops? They're
dogs.

I have the PC card and the DVD drive made by Apple for the Wallstreet.
I have upgraded to a G4 Powerbook so I will sell the drive. I have
been thinking of putting it up for sale of Ebay but if anyone on the
list needs it let me know soon. You can contact me off list at

Maybe some of our yank listas could advise on the availability of free
wireless in the States. You may need to wardrive or warwalk or

Re: Kernel Panic

2005-03-14 Thread Rowan, Michael

Agreed. I was running for months with a cheap 512 chip added to my PB (giving
me a gig). When the upgrade happened, same thing. I started chasing all kinds
of stuff based on what was loading when it paniced, etc. The apple dude yanked
the new memory chip (which, when he did it, had me shaking my head - it was
*obvious* to me the upgraded os was broken since the memory has been fine for
months -- what are the chances that my memory went south at precisely at the
moment of upgrade... )

Sure enough, the thing just booted up and ran flawlessly. Apparently, the new
os level is incredibly sensitive to memory quality. (probably a feature added
by the high end memory makers - since we are entertaining conspiracy theories
on gbooks.)

I thought it was the uplift to 10.3 that did this, but its been a while. Might
have been 10.2.

Reseat your RAM, possibly replace it...such kernel panics are usually
related to poor ram. (although if you had OS 10.1 installed it should
have given you hassles before.)

It could also well be a munged upgrade. Try resetting the PRAM three or
four times in a row (hold down control-alt-p-r until it bongs that many
times. Some people recommend ten times for particularly resilient NVRAM
resets)

Thank you very much for this information. It saved me no end of
frustration. The manual does in fact say this, but you have to hunt
for it.

This seems a silly thing for Apple to skimp on. The mechanism is
already there for the built-in mic. Seems like it would be simple to
make it work for a plug-in mic. In fact, the built-in mic is nearly
useless anyway. It just picks up the noise of the computer. It would
make more sense to leave it out and include an external mic as standard
equipment.

The device suggested seems to be a good one, but I wonder about an
alternative. Would a bluetooth headset work by itself, without need
for a device such as iMic?

Re: Interchangeability of Power Adapters

2005-02-22 Thread Michael Catalano
Good question. I am faced with a similar situation in that the power
on my ibook g3 no longer works but I have an extra adaptor for my
powerbook g4. Let me know what you find out.

On Feb 22, 2005, at 9:11 PM, bobgir2004 wrote:
I have a Dual-USB, 500MHz G3 12" iBook, with the yo-yo power adapter.
Wife has a G4 iBook, 14", 1.2GHz with the small, white, square brick
power
adapter.

When we travel, we prefer to take the smaller G3 iBook.
I searched the Apple site for compatibility issues regarding power
adapters
and found this info.

1. Warning: Use only the power adapter that came with your iBook
computer.
Adapters for other electronic devices (including other iBook models
and
other portable computers) may look similar, but they may affect your
computerĀ¹s performance or damage it.

2. BUT, also found this:
Extra Portable Power Adapter - 65W (for iBook & PowerBook)
Important: Compatible with PowerBook G4 (Aluminum or Titanium models)
or
dual-USB iBook (500Mhz Power PC G3 or higher).

So, in the words of the frightful "Marathon Man", is it safe?
I am making the leap from: IF Apple sells a power adapter that works
on
both my wife's G4 iBook and my G3 iBook, THEN the adapter that came
with her
G4 should power and charge the battery of my G3 and it's safe to use.

G4 iBook manual says of the power adapter:
Input: AC 100-240 volts 50/60 hertz.
Output: CD 24.5 V, 1.875 A.
From the back of the yo-yo adapter for the G3 iBook:
Input: 100-250V, 50-60 H
Output: 24V
Any engineers our there know for sure??
Many thanks,
bob

Go get the download here:

This will download an installer that will run along looking fine until

Ignore it.
Also, just accept the defaults when you install it, it seems to hang

Then start terminal.
By default terminal opens in your Home directory. The program was

type 'cd RaceTrack' and hit enter.
Then enter the following (all as one line!)

Well, my instant vision was stacks and stacks of old Mac pluses
holding up the track ;-P My second was of a Mini with those skinny
plastic wheels on it...

My second thought was I doubt there's something out there *specific*
to a Pine Wood Derby, but it's a competition of players who have
scores (in this case times) with multiple rounds of competition,
there's a host of tournament scoring systems out there.

My third thought was, "well I'll be gobsmacked."
<http://racemanager.sourceforge.net/>
"Race Track is a Cub Scout Pinewood Derby Race Management Application.
It supports racer registration, heat scheduling, electronic timer
integration, and sound effect playback. It is written in Java and runs
on any Java enabled platform."

This means OS X works.

Tiger Launch

2005-01-21 Thread John Michael Feeney
Regarding the ease of starting programs under the
Apple icon in OS 9, you can have a similar set-up in
OS X by using the free application, Tiger Launch. I
have been using it for a while on my Ti Book. It's
really nice. Link:

Mine says 5meg also the other day I was having trouble with it not

through away my mail preference that did the trick

My pal lost his music collection - almost 700 songs downloaded from
iTMS - when the XP upgrade mucked up his system royally. He called
them and they gave him everything back. I guess it all depends on how
big a client you happen to be.
