Quoth Amber Robey : If the message does show up - you know you are subscribed and have also contributed something meaningful to the group at the same time. There's just one little problem, Amber. I'm receiving list mail from both the old group and the new group -- and that's quite OK, since I'm still subscribed to both. However, when I try to post from the address I'm using right now, Google groups bounces it back to me and claims I'm not subscribed -- even though they're sending me list mail. How fast is the Code in OS X: 10.2 vrs. 10.3 vrs. 10.4 ???
I have an old Wallstreet that I am trying to bring back to life. Family number: M4753. In a future posting, I'll be asking about how to format the hard drive, etc., but that's not the topic of this posting... I'm sure we're all familiar with the phenomenon of Code Bloating, where when an Application Program or Operating System goes through a major revision, the length of it's source and/or executable code gets larger with each revision. (Ever heard of Microsoft?) The end result with Code Bloating is that each version requires more and more hardware/horsepower in order to run at the same apparent speed as the previous version did on its own hardware. I've sort of (and I emphasis SORT OF) been told that this is not true between at least two versions of OS X. Can anyone verify this in any way? In other words: - Given the same obsolete hardware (and the XPostFacto software add-on): -- Is 10.2 faster or slower than 10.3? -- Is 10.3 faster or slower than 10.4? -- Is 10.2 faster or slower than 10.4? Re: List Behaviour (Was: Moving to Google Groups)
Why am I still getting messages from maclaunch if the list has been switched to google ? I have four messages this morning from maclaunch, and none from google. Mostly what I get from google is test, test, test. Also, Why all this talk about who said what that was inappropriate back when ? I was hoping for discussion of some computer related topics. OS upgrades
Hello, list. Could anyone tell me if the free Apple OS upgrades are available on CD? I have OS X 10.4 and want to upgrade to 10.4.5. Problem is that the upgrade is 124 MB and I have a dial-up connection. Software update informed me it would take from 12 to 18 hours to download. My spouse and I have separate computers and, to keep peace, I cannot tie up the phone line that long. Added to that, I have telephone lines that blow down a lot. I have searched the Apple site, but cannot find anywhere to purchase anything but the full OS. There is not much we can do about it at this point except continue to ask people not to send test messages to the group. As Dan Knight recently noted, test messages waste bandwidth and are frustrating to the list membership as a whole. Just post your comments to the group - if they don't show up, contact one of the list nannies for assistance - OFF LIST and we will respond ASAP. Also, Why all this talk about who said what that was inappropriate back when ? Unfortunately, new incidents sometimes spark old discussions and everything gets dredged up again. If you left the lombard unplugged with the dead battery in it, how did the battery get charged ? What exactly was the symptom of the dead battery ? Mad Dog The battery had a full charge before it started acting weird. It would show no charge on the lights and a full charge according to the OS, then it'd show nothing on the OS and full according to the LEDs. Usually I can simply plug the network cable in my powerbook and it connects without a problem. Sometimes I need to prompt the powerbook to connect to the network. It usually figures out the setting and I'm good to go. On occasion, however, my computer can't figure out the settings and needs to be configured manually. It asks for four numbers: IP address, Subnet mask, Router, and DSN server. If the chief geek is around, he has all of these in his head and just types them in. Usually, however, the apprentice geek or a clerk is the only one available and has a problem coming up with the right information. Usually phone calls are made to get the info. What I would think would be the thing to do in such a situation, I have never seen anyone do, and I wonder why. Can't they just look up these setting on one of their machines in the Windows equivalent of System Preferences? If it's possible, where is the information? I assume it's in the Control Panel somewhere. Probably under network, right? TIA Peter -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I assume it's in the Control Panel somewhere. Probably under network, right? If your computer cannot figure those things out, it cannot connect, and those numbers are not on your system anywhere. Hoo, boy, some basics: Those are the critical addresses needed for your computer to navigate the internet. IP Address. Every system connected to the internet needs one of these, and it needs to be unique. This is typically expressed as a number like: 192.168.134.72 This is KIND of like stating my street address as: Arizona.Tucson.85721.1703 East Mabel Street The farther to the left the number the wider an area it covers. Since the IP protocol was designed to facilitate a network of networks (what the Internet really is is a vast collection of mutually cooperating, smaller local networks) your computer needs to know who is 'local' and who isn't. The Subnet Mask (typically a number like 255.255.255.0 or any number of combinations like that) is a numerical construct, that when OR'ed (a computer operation) against an IP address tells the system whether it's local or not. If it's local, it can contact the system directly. If it isn't, it needs to contact the outside world. You do that through the Gateway, which is your local network's 'door' to the rest of the internet. The DNS address is actually a later innovation (the seminal paper describing TCP/IP by Cerf and Kahn was published in 1974 http:// tinyurl.com/e94ne http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TCP-IP, DNS not until 1983 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Name_System) that allowed us to attach names www.google.com, to IP addresses : dbdev2:~/Desktop/wikicalc johnson$ host www.google.com www.google.com is an alias for www.l.google.com. www.l.google.com has address 66.102.7.104 www.l.google.com has address 66.102.7.147 www.l.google.com has address 66.102.7.99 That is the result of using a DNS server, the last bit you need, is the system that translates (or facilitates the translation of) that name: www.google.com to an address the computer can actually use: 66.102.7.104 There are two ways (three-ish, actually) to get these addresses to your computer: DHCP and Manual, the two choices you have in your networking control panel or preferences. A DHCP server sits on a local network and waits for computers to say, essentially, help! where am I? Who am I? Where is the rest of the world? This uses a lower level of networking than TCP/IP to accomplish, and will only work on a local network. The DHCP server then checks to see if it's allowed to talk to your computer, and if so, tells it those four vital numbers it needs. This is how home cable routers work, in fact. The other way, Manual, needs a human who knows this, and so needs a geek handy. The -ish way is Bonjour, ex-Rendezvous, aka ZeroConf http:// www.zeroconf.org/, which is an Appletalk-ish self discovery mechanism where by computers local to each other can trade this information around, without the need for a DHCP server. They can at least talk to each other, but at least ONE of them needs to know how to get out, if any of them are to do so. So when you go to an internet cafe, one of three things will happen: Your computer is set to DHCP, and the server gives you an address, and all is happy happy. Your computer is set to DHCP, but the server doesn't recognize you, and won't give you the addressess. Not happy happy. Your computer needs to be set to manual, and given an address by a geek. -- Bruce Johnson This is the sig who says 'Ni!' -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Closing list on Maclaunch, going with Google Groups 100%
Members of the G-Books list, We've moved this list from Maclaunch to Google Groups, which we see as a real improvement, 204 of 210 subscribers have already made the switch! This list on Maclaunch is now closed and being replaced by the new list on Google Groups. Google Groups functions as an email list, so if you want to keep doing things like you have in the past, that's fine. It also adds a searchable online archive plus the ability to read and reply to posts using your browser. If you wish to remain a part of this community, you need to sign up for the new list. There is no way for us to export subscriptions from Maclaunch and move them over. To sign up for the new list, go to http://groups.google.com/group/g-books There are some things about Google Groups that are a bit different, so be sure to read the updated list FAQ, which explains the subscription confirmation system and some other features, such as online subscription management. Re: accessing mpeg video files on OS X ?
The most flexible way will cost you $20 - that' s the price of Apple's QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component. With that installed, you can use the wonder - and free - program MPEG Stream Clip to export the video to dv. Hi Luis, If I buy this MPEG2 Playback component, will I then definitely be able to convert the MPEG video to DV ? Will it convert any MPEG video file or just certain ones ? Amber I have this component installed and I can convert MPEG2 files to dv, to quicktime movies, etc., using the free MPEG Stream Clip. For using with iMovie, either export directly to DV (File-Export to DV...) or export to Quicktime and select the appropriate DV codec. I can also view these MPEG2 files (but not edit them) in QuickTime Player (which is why they call it *playback* component; even QT PRO - which I have - cannot edit MPEG2). Of course, I cannot guarantee that this will work with *any* files; but since you can already play your files, you can probably confirm in VLC if they are indeed MPEG2 and, if so, this procedure will most likely work. Reducing system folder
Hi: I recently erased and installed OSX (Tiger) for the first time on my G3 Pismo (20 gb HD) after copying the entire HD onto a firewire external drive (possibly non-bootable - I just moved all the files) and burning the System folder intact onto a CD. I also have a 9.2.2 bootable installation CD. I then simply moved my old 9.2.2 System Folder back onto the newly erased HD and all is working as planned. However since the Pismo has a relatively small capacity for running Tiger, I am keeping its contents to the minimum. The minimum happens to include Classic as I am still addicted to Claris Emailer! My question is: - considering I only need the System folder to contain items (and extensions) related to Emailer's operation is there anything I can very safely dump from my laptop's version? (I have Spring Cleaning on my desktop which I could use via firewire if anyone thinks it would help me choose.). Thanks for any and all tips and advice! Re: Internet problems in 10.4.2
I'm having the same problems in the last week or so with Safari on a Nac Mini. The page in Safari starts to load, but then does nothing - just stops Clear caches. Try a diff browser. Try a diff user account. Personally, I don't use Safari any more--found too many times it wouldn't work right for me. I switch off between FireFox and iCab when I want to do any online work. I have to admit, I'm becoming less and less enamoured with Safari. Seems like after each Tiger update, it's become slower and has more problems viewing sites. formatting zip disks in Pismo (OS 10.4)?
I'm going to send my mom a few zip disks from the pile and though it would be nice to format them for her. They are currently MSDOS formatted (fat16). I'd like to format them for her Wallstreet (OS 9.2.2). I opened disk utility and could see the zip disk and erase it but couldn't change the format. Is this even possible? Perhaps all zip disks are DOS formatted? For that matter is there any advantage to one format over the other? Is this even possible? Perhaps all zip disks are DOS formatted? For that matter is there any advantage to one format over the other? When you look in Disk utility you see the device and the volume. For example, if I fire up Disk Utility I see: 37.3 GB Prolific PL3507 Combo device Pocket Rocket That's my 2.5 Firewire external drive. 37.3 GB Prolific is the device, Pocket Rocket is the volume on that formatted device. I can change the format of DOS formatted devices, but not DOS formatted volumes. If it were DOS formatted, and I select Pocket Rocket all I can do is reformat it as MS DOS. If I select 37.3 GB Prolific... I can select Mac HFS+ or any other supported format. That said, DOS formatting is likely the most useful, since it's then readable on multiple plateforms, and HFS+ doesn't get you anything more on a 100MB disk. -- Bruce Johnson This is the sig who says 'Ni!' -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... You should be able to formate them for the Mac using ZipTools. Unless they were Mac formated at the factory, they usually come in DOS or a cross platform DOS/UNIX format that's readable by pre-OS X Macs and PCs... you can read/write to that formate but not run first aid/disk recovery programs on those disks. You usually need to find a Windows machine to formate (deeper than initialize) the Zip disks in DOS. I find that with USBank, even when I log off properly in Safari (even the latest one), I often get stuck in a loop where I just get the your session has timed out screen unless I manually search for and delete all USBank cookies. (It sure would be nice to have a search feature within the cookies list!). Some other banks or credit card sites give me a window telling me my browser is not compatible, but if I click Continue it works just fine. Regards, Harry Corsover Follow up on that: AmEx's site works fine with Safari and so does Bank of America. For that matter the state of Florida's website works fine too. We have a thing called SunPass that allows you to pass through toll plazas without having to stop and it debits via a little box. Go to the website to put more money on it and I usually use Safarinot one problem. As a matter of fact I do EVERY form of financial transaction exclusively using the web. My bank, Regions (formerly Union Planters here in Florida) TOTALLY supports Safari, Firefox and OmniWeb as well as Internet Explorer. The same down here. All the local banks here are fully Mac compatible, including mine, which only has offices here, and in one other place in the world, that just happens to be the next town over. Battery Problems Solved!!!
Since someone mentioned that they appreciate people posting to inform of the resolution of a problem, allow me this. My battery is fixed!!! I the Lombard unplugged in sleep mode for about seven hours, and the battery worked when I plugged it back in. It showed all 4 LEDs and a full charge in OS 9. In fact, I'm typing this on battery power, where before, it would go instantly to sleep to preserve the contents of memory. I have no problem paying for the two if they work - although, I must admit that I get tired of Apple not showing much consideration to loyal customers - i.e. not offering upgrade prices for Quicktime Pro and iLife each year but I guess they have to make their money and that's an entirely different issue. In any case, if Quicktime Pro and the add-on will work to allow me to use this video easily in iMovie, then I have no problem forking over the money for them both. Re: Finally sorted out video playback -Thanks !
I would like to thank everybody who contributed to my original thread regarding the MPEG playback and converting all these British video clips into Quicktime format. It turned out that the ffmpegX software worked incredibly well once I got it set up properly. It immediately converted the clips to DV format and I was then able to import the videos directly into iMovie - great quality too. Thanks again !!! Try the latest beta of iCab. Any tricks to getting the Apple Developers Toolkit to compile it? I think there's some details in wamcom.org. Need a Dependable Browser for OS 9
I have a powerbook with OS X, but I prefer to use my old i-Mac with OS 9.1. Both Netscape browsers keep dropping the web. I use Netscape 4.74 for web browsing and 7.0 for e-mail. Why both ? 7.0 won't work in Navigator, it just shows a blank screen or quits on me. If I click on a link in an e-mail it tries to open and quits. I copy and pastes links into 4.74 to view a page. I kept 4.74 because I like the way Composer works in it to build web pages. But if I try to do e-mail with 4.74 and hit a button like spell check it freezes and I have to restart. I know I have issues here, but It's like driving a 1957 Desota. Is there a browser out there that I can download to work with my OS 9.1 that will cooperate. Then I'll only use 4.74 for web construction. It's been rock-solid on my Lombard, and I use Eudora Lite for my email, but I've also got issues, as I'm running 9.2.2 on a machine that I bought with OS X Jaguar on it.
