Re: Pismo upgrades: The BlueChip G3 900 MHz

Stardate 060210.20:17 -0600. A subspace message from Jason Long reads:

Too late, I've already got one! smirk

... bastard :P

I didn't realize that there were so few sold. I was a bit leery of Powerlogix
as I'd read some of the upset customer reports on the xlr8yourmac database.

From my experiences, Powerlogix made the best upgrades out of the
lot. Sonnet, frankly, make shit.

To pick a nit I'm pretty sure that Moore bought the G4/500 upgrade
for his Pismo, not the G3/900.

That's his personal machine - the wife has the G3/900.

These upgrades were problematic when PowerLogix was

I'd want to see some evidence that the bugs had been

Pismo upgrades: The BlueChip G3 900 MHz

2006-02-10 Thread Geoffrey Peters

Well ... some things just never cease to amaze me.

Does anyone here have the incredibly good fortune to own the very
rare PowerLogix BlueChip G3 Pismo 900 (yes, that's right, the
sexiest machine Apple ever made can run at 900 MHz) CPU upgrade?

No?

Want one?

Well, ya can't have one. Unless ... read on!

It seems that when the lovely lads at OWC 'absorbed' PowerLogix (whom
I swear made *THE* best CPU upgrades ever -- Sonnet make shite, by
comparison) they merged their CPU upgrade lines, and the only Pismo
upgrade they kept was the NewerTech G4/500 (PPC7510).

BOOO!!! B *much raining of peanuts and hissing* BOO!

Charles Moore mentions the launch of the BlueChips in his MacOpinion
colums
http://www.macopinion.com/columns/roadwarrior/04/04/13/index.html
with a 900 MHz (750FX) and 1 GHz (750GX) available back in late April
of 2004. Obviously *some* of them made it out the door, because
Charles has one, and at least one person bought *two* because he's
selling one on eBay: http://tinyurl.com/cp5hs ... and interestingly
enough, the seller's upgrade features a third chp, the low(er) power
750GL.

Man, my chin hit the floor, bounced four times and ran out the door screaming.

Now, I can kinda understand why OWC decided to not continue the
BlueChips, seeing as they already had the Newertech stuff, and the
fact that the BlueChip 900 was US$349 against the NewerTech G4/500 at
US$279 ... but *SURELY* when they took over they brought in whatever
remained of the BlueChip kits!! If so ...

Hands up all you Pismo addicts who'd like another crack at the
world's fastest Pismo upgrades? I know *I* for one am prepared to pay
the premium, who's with me? Shall we petition the lovely lads at OWC
with a last-chance group order?

I didn't realize that there were so few sold. I was a bit leery of
Powerlogix as I'd read some of the upset customer reports on the xlr8yourmac

not to wait for the just announced 1 GHz G3 chip, but to settle for the 900

It's no longer my primary computer as I bought a 20' iMac G5 1.8 a year ago
for more screen space. But I just took it on the road for a couple of weeks
and it did just fine although I was really wishing that I'd bought the damn

lightning strikes a couple of years ago it runs great.

Powerlogix G3 Bluechip prohibits external video in PDQ?

2004-01-07 Thread Mikael Byström
According to the manual for the 500 Mhz G3 Bluechip from Powerlogix (soon
3 years old), this product is compatible with Powerbook G3 series 266mhz,
that is a PDQ. Yet, after successfully running in an original Wallstreet
(The seller tells me) and after running the flash utility on the PDQ, the
machine boots up and run nicely, but external video doesn't work.

This is very important for me. Any idea what could prevent external video
from working with this processor card?

Doesn't seem to be software or the OS, as OS X, OS 9 or boot CDs all
display the same behaviour.

Could it be that it need to be rezeroed before your run the flash utility
again? How would I do that then?

Pismo BlueChip Upgrade

2003-11-10 Thread Tom Opacki
Hello,

Does anyone reading this newsletter, have any experience with upgrading a
Pismo with the PowerLogix BlueChip processor?

I ask because I've held the belief that the 400 Mhz Pismo and the 500 Mhz
Pismo would have different final processor speeds, if the same chip was
installed in each of them.

I had thought the 400 Mhz Pismo wouldn't be as fast as the other version
of Pismo.

I'm now informed by a reliable source that my beliefs are incorrect.

Will the system profiler be in error when calculating the processor
speeds with that upgrade chip installed?

Thanks.

Tom

Pismo Bluechip G3 900 Eats My Battery

2003-10-01 Thread Mark Edward Attew
I have my Bluechip G3 900MHz upgrade happily accelerating everything Mac
on my Pismo and so far the performance boost is tremendous.

My only complaint is battery time...before the upgrade while I was
running at 400Mhz, my battery would last about 3.5 to 4 hours which is
pretty good considering the age of the battery. With the upgrade in
place, I am lucky now if I can get 1.5 t 2 hours, usually closer to 1.5
out of a full charge.

I know I am running more than twice the CPU speed and expected a
decrease in battery time, but there are folks with G3 900 iBooks who get
better than 1.5 hours in their machines.

I tried slowing the clock speed down, which you can do using a little
application named CPU Director, but even slowing it down to 400MHz
doesn't increase the battery life.

Is it time to invest in a second battery to get 3 hours or is there some
other way to improve the battery life?

I've used Energy Saver to optimize for battery life, but this doesn't
buy me too many minutes.

I prefer the extra battery. IMO, if a notebook can't stay on for at
least 2 hours per battery, it's not worth buying in the first place.

I would say 1.5 hours is pretty good for upgrading that much. Without
looking up the specs, I'm sure your upgraded processor pulls more
wattage than the old one. Your battery was designed with the old
processor in mind. Even running it at slower cycles, your probably
still going to pull out more wattage than before.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that the PPC750FX chip that PowerLogix uses for
their Bluechip upgrades draws *less* power than the original PPC750--all
else being equal.

For the original poster:

Is it possible that some power saving options got changed or reset
during the upgrade? Resetting them and/or zapping the PRAM might help.
Also, is this your original battery? If so, it's probably nearing the
end of its usable life. Powerbook batteries usually degrade over time,
but I've heard of a few cases where they seemed to go south rather
abruptly--so it could just be a coincidence. If you know someone with a
known good battery, it might be worth trying it out. Finally, have you
contacted PowerLogix?

It also depends on the revision of 750 is in the Bluechip versus on the
original CPU card. The Powerbook G3s were pretty bad on the
power-efficiency compared to the current G3 crop. Even the first-gen
G4s had better power efficiency than the G3s the Lombard and Pismo came
with. (Just working towards my next paycheck, wanting a Bluechip LS
G4/500 for my Lombard)

Yes. Forgot to mention that. The G3 750 that's in the 900Mhz iBook
is a low power version.

Re: Pismo Bluechip G3 900 Eats My Battery

2003-09-29 Thread Andrew Kershaw
I would say 1.5 hours is pretty good for upgrading that much.
Without looking up the specs, I'm sure your upgraded processor pulls
more wattage than the old one. Your battery was designed with the
old processor in mind. Even running it at slower cycles, your
probably still going to pull out more wattage than before.
Well, that I'm _not_ sure of. Newer processors are typically more
efficient than older ones - for instance, many 1400/603e owners that
have upgraded to G3s have reported LONGER battery lives. Reducing
the processor speed back down to 400MHz ought to have a notable
difference in power consumption.

Here's a silly question: Are you sure it's the same battery that you
sent out with the computer?

Peace,
Drew

Re: powerlogix psimo bluechip upgrade

2003-05-28 Thread Jack Balauro

I've just upgraded my pismo with a powerlogix g3 900mhz processor.

There are heat issues. The fan comes on and it did not with the
original
500mhz processor.

It seems as though the heatsink is not seated properly on the CPU
itself or may be loose. I would remove the
daughter card, remove the heatsink pad and clean both the CPU and
heatsink surfaces again. Make sure they
had removed the old heat transfer tape. Use isopropyl to clean both
surfaces. Once clean apply some fresh
thermal paste per the instructions given with the thermal paste. Align
and place the 2 screws back in. Torque
to approx. 5-7 ft-lbs of pressure.

More important are the following two matters:

My pismo reports that there is a problem with cache memory. Any ideas
about
the source of this? The powerlogix processor comes with a .5mb cache.
The
original pismo had a 1 mb cache. Is my pismo confused because of this?
Is the source of reported problem referring to the L2 or L3 cache
problem?
The L2 is .5mb and is located on the cpu die. The original L2 cache
which
is on the board itself now revert to becoming L3 cache. The system may
be confused this fact and not initialize properly. There is a cache
setting
utility cpudirector from powerlogix which can be had here:

http://www.powerlogix.com/support2/cpudirector/index.html

After checking the heatsink and reassembling everything I would drop the
cpu speed and disable the L3 cache and see what happens with respect
to the temperature and if you still get the cache error. If everyhting
seems OK
I would increase the CPU speed until you achieve the full 900MHz. If
the fan
doesn't turn back chances are you may have solved the problem.

I've lost the use of my firewire and USB ports. Any conjectures on what
could have happened and what could be done?
Hmmm... The only thing I can think of right now is, make certain that
the
cpu daughter card itself is seated properly. i.e the 2 left side tabs
are matched up
in the slots and the daughter card itself is bottomed onto the main
logic board connector.
Since the Firewire and USB bridge path comes from the UNI-N chip
located on the under side
of the daughter card itself, I would also make certain that none of the
pins on the daughter
card mating connector or logic card mating connector did not get
inadvertantly bent
or crunched.

Good luck, hope this helps some.

Jack

Don't know for sure, the Lombard is the one model of Powerbook we don't
have (actually, we had one but it got stolen several years ago!). What
I can tell you about the Pismo upgrade is that it is not completely
done at the factory. You actually take the Pismo apart yourself and
just ship PowerLogix the processor/heat sink assembly. They then
upgrade it and ship it back to you and you reinstall this assembly back
in your Pismo.

I'll let someone else explain why the Lombard is done differently!

... Eric

I've never really ujnderstood why the Powerlogix G4 500 Mhz for the
Lombard is a user-install, while the Pismo upgrade requires the CPU
board to go to Powerlogix. Is there some difference between the
 daughter boards that I'm missing?

Tom Burke (who's got a 333 Lombard is therefore very interested in
 the Powerlogix upgrades)

Yes. The Lombard (and Wallstreet, iirc) have a separate logic card
that contains just the CPU, memory and ROM whereas the Pismo has a
single logic board.

Ok, I spoke too soon. We're having issues. I'm working with Powerlogix
to try to resolve them. I posted the initial review on xlr8yourmac.com.
Go to the CPU Upgrade review and select Powerbook 200 (Firewire).
Mine's the first review.

The problem I'm having seems to have to do with power draw or heat.
Everything works fine most of the time, but if I run it closed and hook
up an external monitor and keyboard, it crashes within minutes,
particularly if I'm running a game like UT. Hopefully they'll have some
more info for me later today.

Re: Bluechip Pismo upgrade rocks

2002-11-08 Thread Hal
Here's an update on the upgrade.

First of all, Powerlogix has been very responsive, getting back to me
within hours each time I've emailed them.

They had me pull the heatsink and remove the thermal pad and use Arctic
Silver II (which I happen to have a tube of) and reattach the heatsink.

The pismo is running ok when used alone, but when I connect an external
monitor and keyboard and mouse, it crashes when playing the UT intro
movie. It seems to be a heat related issue. After the crash, the cache
software is reporting a cpu temp of over 52C. When the machine is cold
(under 48C), it works fine, but after running for a while, it gets
unstable.

I'll post a follow-up when we figure out what to do next.

Re: Powerlogix Bluechip experiences

2002-11-02 Thread John Fox
I have tried to upgrade my Wallstreet G3, but to no avail. I think the
card was bad. I didn't even bother to get it replaced, since I had such
a hard time dealing with tech support to begin with. If I were to do it
over again, I would go with Sonnet Tech's Crescendo card. it's a hell
of a lot cheaper and you can download the software needed to copy the
flash ROM from the original processor right from their website.

How do ya like dem apples, PowerLogix?! (Yeah, I'm aware of the
irony.)

Re: BLUECHIP

Does this mean that I can exceed my
Powerbooks specifications and move up to 512 without
any negative reprocussions?

Absolutely NOT. For example, I HAD a 256MB DIMM in my powerbook. It
worked flawlessly with my previous Powerlogix card and with the Apple
card.

After receiving my replacement Powerlogix card (which was bad
initially BTW), the 256MB RAM is no longer compatible.

So even though it worked fine for 2 cards, all of a sudden it's out
of spec which is totally @#$#%#@$ if you ask me.

I don't believe it all of a sudden came out of spec.

They were the WORST company I have ever dealt with.

That is the worst horror story I have ever heard.

Well, maybe not the worst :-) Still bad though.

I also think that OWC should have pulled the contract
with PL.

Maybe so... well, they said they have changed how they deal with Powerlogix.

FWIW: Apparently Sonnet is better - they _did_ go through a round
where they were putting lower clock rate marked chips on boards,
but apparently this was a manufacturer marking and not indicative
of the actual rated speed of the chip. whatever

Anyway, Newer Tech is going back online - they had some cool products.

Back to Powerlogix. After receiving my modded and fixed board,
their attitude towards me changed radically. They insist that my RAM
is out of spec even though it worked with their prior board(s) and
the Apple Board.

Actually I forgot, it's 3 to one. I had:

Apple Board - RAM works.
1st Powerlogix board 466 - RAM works.
2nd Powerlogx Board RAM works.
Last Powerlogix board - RAM does not work.

So does Newer Tech have a similar G4 board?
My whole motivation is to get the most out of my
Lombard before moving on to the latest and greatest
apple has to offer. The new titanium G4's are really
appealing to me, but if I can make my Lombard
comprable for much less, I think I would like to go
that route, first.

Here is some things I got from this list:

(g4 upgrade on fire? i spoke with someone an apple
 tech has informed me that
there has been fire's caused by installing g4
 upgrades in g3 PowerBook's
that has architecture that can't support the higher
 temperature's or
electrical flux of the g4 chip?)

what does this mean? another wrote the following

(This is not for public consumption but they haven't
been able to pay us the
money they owe us for ads we ran for them. They are
 very tight for cash so
 buyer beware.

PowerLogix is actually having a ROM issue on these
 cards. We've worked on
several that were defective, and they're having a
 delivery problem on the
 ROM
control portion,, causing malfunctions. The units
 are coming very slowly
 because of this.)
 --
There was also a problem with: booting between OS 9
 and OS X on
 separate partitions

OK their customer service is suspect too

Do I need to show you the discrepancies between
 customer/tech support
and the president? Oh wait, the info is online.

If you still think they are reputable and wish to
 purchase from them,
 go for it!

Re: Wallstreet/Bluechip upgrade - memory limit???

2001-07-28 Thread Anne Judge

I already have the upgrade - got it a couple months ago - so this
isn't a feasible option for me, esp. since it sounds like the 256 chip
(esp. if low-profile) will PROBABLY work. I'll report on the results
in my case when I'm back from vacation order the memory.

Re: Wallstreet/Bluechip upgrade - memory limit???

2001-07-22 Thread John Featherstone

When I look for larger ram modules, I don't find any that spec for my
Wallstreet 2. Whose specs are you using when you are ordering. I'm running a
pair of 128s, top and bottom right now.

Powerlogix officially says they support anything that's in the Apple
specs for the Wallstreet, but that's max 192 MHz, one 128-MHz one
64-Mhz chip. I'd been hoping to try to put in one 256 in place of one
of my 64s - I know that though they're not officially supported they
often work in Wallstreets. But it didn't occur to me that I no longer
have the orginal Apple processor card.

So has anyone put in a PowerLogix BlueChip with more memory than that
(either at the time of installation or added later)? DID IT WORK?

I've been reading the reviews at XLR8yourmac. Most are very positive, and
most have put larger memory modules in. It seems that you need to have a
smaller profile chip in the top space for heat dissipation, so if you put in
a 256K chip in the top slat, make it a low profile chip.
