Larry,

I am basing my cautions on the experiences my friends had with damaged
laptops. Initially these computers seemed to be working but within months,
both ended up with serious and very costly repairs.

However, it appears that you are comfortable with the Superdrive, and mboard
replacement replacement so perhaps you should go ahead and buy the PB. I
hope it works out to be a good investment for you.

Go for the PowerBook, it's alot more 'Book fer yer dough. If it's working

In that case the Extreme card reverts to 802.11b mode, and is in all
respects just like an older airport card. It should get better range at
b than at g, always. In fact I believe that the card (and base station)
will automatically switch to the lower B speed when you get out of
range of G. I'm not positive on this, but it is the way Apple would
design it.

Unfortunately, the vagaries of wireless setups are such that
experimenting is about the only way of determining your own optimal
setup. With the 12 PB the internal Extreme card or a USB dongle are
your only wireless options.

The tiBook had pretty lousy reception, no doubt. The alBooks are much
better; mine goes the same places my iBook did and gets reception. I don't
want to make any general claims about iBook vs alBooks because in many cases
we wind up comparing 802.11b to 802.11g rather than iBook to PowerBook -
some iBooks have airport while others have airport extreme and since they
look so much alike it takes a pretty savvy Mac user to know the difference.

Airport (802.11b) has a slightly larger effective range than Airport Extreme
(802.11g). In addition you can think of Airport's reception as a circle;
inside the circle you have a signal and good speed. Airport Extreme is like
a circle within a circle; inside the smaller circle you get high speed
reception and when you step outside that your speed drops to 802.11b speeds.

Definitely wait for Tiger at this point.

I know no-one knows these things for sure, but what is likely

Apple says 2nd quarter and given past similar pronouncements I'd say
probably late May to July.

What will happen to prices of the iBooks ? Specs ?

Prices of new machines will stay the same or drop slightly while speeds and
capacity go up. I've read several rumors that G5 iBook and PowerBook
contracts have already been let and we'll see them in March. I'd love to
believe it but I don't. I'd be really surprised if we don't hear about a
speed bump sometime in late winter or spring and the G5 this summer at the
earliest. And no, I have no insider information other than knowledge of the
insides of the EasyBake G5 PowerMac. When Apple said thermal issues are
significant I hear a massive understatement.

Twice I have bought a PowerBook (through work) and weeks
afterwards a revision was released. First the TiBook 550 with
DVD, three weeks later, Combo. And then my current AlBook
1GHz Combo, two weeks later, SuperDrive... :o(

It happens and I have only one piece of advice for avoiding that problem.
Buy a Mac within a month or two of their release. That can be somewhat
dangerous but I've been doing it for 10 years and the closest I've gotten to
a lemon was my current 15 alBook which went back for a new screen. Of
course I've also avoided the first release of massively changed models. I
didn't buy a tiBook until the first revision (which I wound of selling after
a month because I hated it) and until the luxor iMac I never bought an iMac
at all.

No, with the current generation of machines the difference is generally
insignificant. The first lot of titanium PBs were pretty poor in this
respect, but Apple has largely fixed the problem in the aluminium PBs.

Definitely wait for Tiger at this point.
I know no-one knows these things for sure, but what is likely

I think 3-6 months.
What will happen to prices of the iBooks ? Specs ?
There will almost certainly be a new generation of iBooks around by
then, probably with upgraded graphics cards as current iBooks don't
offer full support for CoreImage. PowerBooks do, which is something
that you should consider when making your decision. Unless you want to
wait months before getting a new computer, you'll have to buy Tiger
separately, so this doesn't really enter into the equation.

Twice I have bought a PowerBook (through work) and weeks

PowerBook updates could come within weeks. iBook updates are a bit
further away, but still likely within the same timeframe as Tiger's
release.

It wouldn't matter to me whether the logic board was replaced or not.
Consequential damage from any type of impact can cause hidden damage that
may not appear for some time. A hard drive or optical drive failure may be
the worst things that could happen but would you want to even play with that
possibility ??

Unless you are backing up your stuff on a regular or even daily basis (for
businesses), a hard drive failure can have serious consequences for anybody
- including those of a financial nature related to downtime without the
computer and losing important files.

It just doesn't seem worth it to me. I would suggest the original poster
avoid the damaged laptop like the plague and either get another used one
that is still eligible for Applecare (the damaged one obviously is not) or
buy a new one.

Two, signal reception is very environment dependent. You are talking
about three very different environments. the only way to reliably
compare would be to use the same systems at the same place.

One tiny, probably insignificant data point:
I have a 1.5GHz Powerbook G4 and a friend had an iBook (unknown specs,
I think it was a 1.0Ghz or thereabouts).

I was getting 3 bars. He was getting 5. We were sitting next to each
other in a conference room.

Now you could say that I was getting a strong signal and he was getting
a very strong signal, and I didn't test to see whether either of us
could get outside the room. So this is all FYI/FWIW/YMMV.

I love my PB and still believe it was the right decision for me.
And I would still avoid a dropped laptop like the plague unless the
price was significantly lower.

Airport Xtreme (was To iBook or AlBook, that is the question

Airport Extreme is like a circle within a circle; inside the smaller
circle you get high speed reception and when you step outside
that your speed drops to 802.11b speeds.
Understand 100%, but roughly, what are the radiuses (however
the plural of radius is spelt ?!) of these circle going through
wooden walls and stuff ?
Do extra antennas on the basestation make a big difference ?

radii is the plural of radius.
Higher bandwidth will be more affected by signal degradation than lower.
Wooden walls would not block radio waves a whole lot. My house is all
concrete block, and my Airport Base Station is reachable from
everywhere in it.

Metal, such as reinforcing rods in concrete, conduits, plumbing and
wiring in regular walls and buildings constructed of steel framing are
going to cause greater range problems than wood.

Haven't really seen how far outside I can pick it up, but it's near a
window and exterior wall, it should be a fair distance.

Do extra antennas on the basestation make a big difference ?
Yes they do. Do be careful, however as you can run afoul of whatever
your local equivalent of the FCC is if you cause interference with
other systems.

People have achieved quite long ranges with modified base stations.,
but the tradeoff is directionality. The farther you want to go, the
more directional your antenna must be. (google 'cantenna' or 'pringles
can antenna' for lots of DIY solutions.)

Although you should be careful, if the logic board has been replaced, and
the display is working fine, the worst that is likely to happen is a hard
disk or optical drive failure. How long has the machine been operating
since it was repaired?
I went to look at the PowerBook today, the gey's a web designer
and is still using it.
1. Car accident, the front left corner got bashed, smaller dent than
   I thought.
2. Later on (seperate incident) he damaged the sound out port when
he used it as a huge iPod and got the cable caught on a door
   handle... :o/
3. Then the SuperDrive stopped working and he took it in for
warranty repairs, they replaced the mobo due to the port and
the SuperDrive as it had packed up.
That's it. It actually sounds a lot more straight forward than I
initially thought.
---
There will almost certainly be a new generation of iBooks around by then,
probably with upgraded graphics cards as current iBooks don't offer full
support for CoreImage. PowerBooks do, which is something that you should
consider when making your decision. Unless you want to wait months before
getting a new computer, you'll have to buy Tiger separately, so this
doesn't really enter into the equation.
I went in to a local Apple dealer and compared the iBook 12 and
the PowerBook 12 (albeit newer than the one I'm looking at) and
there is a significant difference in the screen quality and I asked about
this. They said that the actual screen is the same, but the video card
difference has that effect, which actually rules out the iBook for me.
So the 1GHz 12 PowerBook Al supports CorelImage ???

In my view, any laptop that has an impact may harbour hidden problems.
I.e. I am not sure how it got damaged in this car accident :

1. Was it in a case and fell of the seat

OR

2. Did he just have it sitting on the front seat (out of a case) and it
slammed into the door or floor on impact.

Either way, any impact that left a dent, regardless of the size, would cause
me concern.

Anyway, it's up to you. You're the one that's going to be using it, not us.
If you feel comfortable with it - go for it. If you have any doubts, look
for something else.

Not only is a dropped laptop forever tainted IMO, but the iBooks are

to me) and they have longer battery life.

I'll assume we're talking TiBk? AlBk reception and battery are at least
equal to the iBook. The only reason (?) to go for the TiBk over an AlBk
would be if you need to *boot* into OS 9.

The iBook is a great computer. The Powerbook was right for me for
other reasons, but given your situation I think the iBook is the clear
winner. Definitely wait for Tiger at this point.

Agreed...so I'd recommend that, if you can, put this purchase off until
June. Not only will the shipping version of Tiger likely be revealed, but
the rumours of the much anticipated PBk G5 could be settled. If you still
want a G4 PBk, I'm sure you'll get one for a significantly reduced price.

My house is stucco and that has chicken wire in it. The openings in

that the signal has to go through two exterior walls to reach my

My first base station was an SMC model and with it I couldn't get a
signal in the bedroom. My current base station, a Belkin, can be
heard through those walls, and pretty much every where else in the
house.

AFAIK there aren't any 2.4GHz phones near my house. And our
microwave oven doesn't produce any noticeable effects. There are
some other WANs around but I don't think I get much interference from
them.

has been covered with bricks, but no metal structures.
I want to use my PowerBook outside in the garden which is about
16,500 square feet (1502 m^2) with several seating places.
That works out to a square 128' on a side. Close to the house you
should be able to work; it depends on where the base station is in the
house.

The linear distance from receiver to receiver is the key. 802.11b will
reach to about 150' (~46M). Apple says 802.11g reaches about 50' (~15M)
on their hardware page about the ABS Extreme.

Pretty basic stuff really, but I was merely thinking of a larger uni-

No issues with the Distance. But I'll tell you what happened on my Home
Network. I have Comcast cable. When I had it plugged into a Snow Base
Station, I only got about a 187 kps download speed. When I upgraded to
Airport Extreme, my download speeds jumped to 378 kps. I have a 17
PowerBook with an Extreme card inside. Hope that helps you.

Will it be shorter like the Xtreme ? Or longer like 802.11b ?

That's kinda weird. A good 11Mb/s connection should be well enough for a
Cable or DSL connection, even a T1. The wireless speed shouldn't affect the
download speed. Maybe the physical location of the Xtreme base station or
the laptop was not the same than with regular AirPort?

signal physical damage immediately. I can't see them covering any kind of
future repairs on that PB.

I know Larry really wants the PB and it does appear to be a good deal but
with the impact, there could be all sorts of hidden costs down the road that
could easily exceed the cost of getting a brand new 12 iBook with some

True enough, I should have been clearer, they were the early aibooks,
again there was a lot of metal in the building, but when I had my ibook
at work (not often enough to reliably compare) I did not have the same
connection problems.

The two times I had one of the aibooks home the connection was solid,
but didn't really do much roaming.

Also would wireless b vs g have any effect on signal
strength/connectivity/range?

Not only is a dropped laptop forever tainted IMO, but the iBooks are
said to have much better reception than the Powerbooks (I use mine

The iBook is a great computer. The Powerbook was right for me for

First, I would not purchase any laptop that was previously damaged in an

is just my personal preference). I am sure you are aware that even if the
PB is still under Applecare, that damage would not be covered, even if it is
the cause of other problems.

Given the above, out of the two computers you presented, I would go for the
new iBook 12.

If you can wait, buy an iBook that includes Tiger and save yourself the cost
of upgrading.

You don't go into great detail regarding what you would be using this
computer for except it seems like it will be your main computer and you will
be using it extensively for internet purposes. In that case, the iBook
would be a great choice.

If you are planning to use any graphic intensive programs like Photoshop, I
would be more inclined to go with a PB. I have a 15 Al PB and use it as my
primary computer. I use it primarily for Photoshop work, including photo
restoration and am very pleased with it. I don't believe an iBook would
have been sufficient for this kind of work but for everything else, the
iBook is a great value for money.

Good luck with your decision,

The GPU may not seem like it's too important, but under Tiger,
none of the iBooks (nor the Mac mini, for that matter) will
support CoreImage.
Very valid point!
So this includes the 12 PB G4 1GHz ???
---
The DVI out is another big thing -- if you want to upgrade the LCD (or if
the current one has a DVI connecter), it's much better to go DVI-DVI (or
even DVI-VGA) than VGA-DVI.
Yes, I had thought of this.
---
Also, PowerBooks can (officially) take more RAM (up to 1.25GB
No, the same:

An extra 10GB hard drive space is not huge either way, but you'll probably
hit the limits of the 30GB drive reasonably soon, so at least the 40GB
gives you more time to upgrade.
Not for me as the PowerBook/iBook won't house any file storage,
I will have my server for that. The *Book will act a bit more like an NC.
Everyone remember those ???

Finally, the PB is just a much more attractive computer. The iBooks scratch
and stain quite easily, whereas the PB maintains its pretty aluminium sheen
through almost any punishment.
Also, I can paint the AlBook with automotive paint!!!
Just gotta decide on a design, taking inspiration from
some NHL goalie helmets! :o)

To iBook or AlBook, that is the question

2005-01-15 Thread Larry le Mac
I am pondering my next *Book purchase and the way I see it
I have two choices (need vs. budget and all...)
I will be using this as my main Mac with an external 17 TFT
in my study and then AirPort everywhere else in the house and
garden.
New iBook 12
   or
A second hand AlBook 12 1GHz that I have been offered.
It was involved in an accident and has a small casing damage,
but the motherboard was replaced (receipt).
= Slower CPU but larger drive 40 vs. 30GB (same spec. cache bus)
= VRAM, ports
=
+ SuperDrive (combo in iBook)
+ DVI out (mini-VGA for the iBook)
+ Audio in on the PB (none on the iBook)
- I can wait to buy an iBook that'll come with Tiger
+ I can repaint the PowerBook.
??? Video ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 (iBook) vs.
NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 (PB G4)
The PowerBook works out only marginally cheaper, bt may have more RAM.
Which *Book should I buy ???
Why ?

Re: To iBook or AlBook, that is the question

2005-01-15 Thread Ben Dyer
I'd recommend the PB 12 -- the screens are generally better, the GPU
is better, and they're more expandable. The GPU may not seem like it's
too important, but under Tiger, none of the iBooks (nor the Mac mini,
for that matter) will support CoreImage. This means you can't use
Motion, and you won't be able to use the efficiency improvements that
Tiger implements.

The DVI out is another big thing -- if you want to upgrade the LCD (or
if the current one has a DVI connecter), it's much better to go
DVI-DVI (or even DVI-VGA) than VGA-DVI.

Also, PowerBooks can (officially) take more RAM (up to 1.25GB, I
believe, compared with 640MB for the iBooks). Newer, high-capacity
SODIMMs make this less of an issue, but it's still good to have over
1GB of RAM wherever possible.

An extra 10GB hard drive space is not huge either way, but you'll
probably hit the limits of the 30GB drive reasonably soon, so at least
the 40GB gives you more time to upgrade.

Finally, the PB is just a much more attractive computer. The iBooks
scratch and stain quite easily, whereas the PB maintains its pretty
aluminium sheen through almost any punishment.

Cheers,
Ben

2005-01-15 Thread Al Poulin
Larry, I have no simple answer, but maybe a few thoughts to work on.

Make sure the machine is OK now and that you get the CDs for all the
licensed software.

Do you need to burn DVDs?
+ DVI out (mini-VGA for the iBook)
For me this would be the big one. Since you are going for the external
monitor, is there any advantage in video quality between the DVI and
the mini-VGA? I do not know, but have the very vague impression that
the VGA entails some conversion of signal involving digital to analog
which degrades what your eyeball gets. Also, does the interface
dictate what models of monitor are available to you?

+ Audio in on the PB (none on the iBook)
Do you need or even want this?
- I can wait to buy an iBook that'll come with Tiger
And maybe there will be another performance kicker by then.

I don't know what current PBs can take but this new iBook has 1.25Gb in it.
