The speaker jack is actually one of the few things you have a decent
chance at fixing on a logic board.

The machine will give sound through the headphones or USB speaker but not
internal speaker. In system preferences the only choice in output sound is
headphone mode. This is why I think maybe the jack is messed up. I can solder
fairly good as long as I can see it. I'm looking for some magnifying type

Use a piece of string to layout and measure the length you need and
then search for something that fits, I use round IDE cables similar to
this:

Somewhere in the back of a closet I have a crimper tool, spools of IDE
and SCSI ribbon cables, connectors etc. for making custom length
cables, they are very easy to make. Maybe you can find an IT person
who still has one of these:

or a welder who has a pair of these, which work just as well:

Sudden onset whining noises can come, pretty much from only four
sources: the hard drive, the fans, the optical drive and the audio
system.

If you're experiencing lots of spinning pinwheels, particularly when
accessing the drive (opening, closing files, etc) it's the hard drive.
Back up your stuff NOW, and look for a replacement.

If it seems very warm, and you can feel air moving out of the vents
when the whining is happening, it's likely the fans. Sadly this is
logic-board replacement time as the fans are part of the logic board
on most models of these.

On a G4 if you can pull it out into the open and you can run it while
the case is open. This will help you identify where the sound is
coming from, down near the hard drive, in front by the optical (or zip
drive, if present) by the fan, the back of the power supply (to id the
fan in there).

The audio subsystem can be identified by unplugging any speakers...if
the noise stops, it's the audio, which will be a special case to fix.

Pretty much, whatever you find making the noise, replace that part.

My sawtooth G4 has a recurring problem that fits your description. It's the
fan on the ATI AGP video board. Easy test is to stick your finger, carefully,
on the fan. If the sound goes away you got it. If the fan bites your finger off
it's something else.

I have been taking the tape of the fan about once a year and applying a tiny
drop of gun oil. It's a thin 40 mm square thing and so far I haven't seen a
replacement on the el-cheapo electronics stores.

Mouser Electronics carries those, I've used
them on other ATI cards and chipsets, if you can find the OEM number
of the fan. You may also have to carefully remove and replace the
plastic shroud which is often a custom item.

I use flat angle brackets from the hardware store. I can't remember
if I get the 1.5" or the 2". Just get four of them, and screw them
onto the sides of the drives. This will hold one drive above the
other with a gap depending on the size of bracket you bought.

These are the flat L shaped (equal leg length) pieces of metal about
1/2" wide with holes in the legs for screws. You can also just get
straight (rectangular) flat metal bits with the screw holes. I can't
remember why I use the 'L' shaped ones, but there was some reason at
the time

The reason I'm thinking the jack is because the system preferences doesn't

This is often due to deformation of the jack itself, pop it open, and
plug the headphines in and take 'em out, you should be able to see
where you need to futz with the connectors a bit.

I said no because it assured me I can do this later with MA.

Make sure after you install SL you also do all the Apple updates
using software updates, nothing else!!

Yes, I did all above.

"setting up" for first time and I am asked if I want to move stuff,
I say yes and I identify *the whole QS back up volume* on the
external HD.

Yes, I did this. A few pesky things like it did not accept that the
names on my MB and QS were the same and invited me to rename the QS
user for the purpose of transfer right here and now. Then it did the
deed.

mission critical because I will not need the MB to do serious work
for a couple of weeks. I hope it does not ask me tricky questions
along the way.

Please just do it . We're all waiting to see you amazed at the
accuracy of Migration Assistant. LOL But That's just maybe me.

No, it worked better than I expected once pennies starting dropping
about a few things. As Bruce implied, you have to log in to the
migrated user and the changes are apparent. I had the wrong idea that
it was the MB *main user account* that got changed!

I had to install rosetta or something (to get intel to read power I
guess) and it said to download latest mac combo update (450MB!) even
if software update had been performed. And there were some surprises
like first login brought millions of files onto the MB desktop
(whereas most of these files were in a folder within the desktop
folder on the QS). I fixed all this. Mail seems to be working on some
of the tested accounts, usenet MT-Watcher too. And I was simply
amazed to see my Fireworks and Photoshop CS work too on initial test
I thought latest MB would not run these right even so? Even BBEdit!

Mail.app does not have all the mail boxes I had created on the QS and
will look into that. So far I am well pleased and thank you all for
advice.

Need to tidy a lot up now. I know you can't easily do this but is
there any way to now change the name of my migrated account?

Not sure if I should delete the account I created when installing the
OS from the DVDs. or could it be used to somehow import all from the
migrated account and then deleting the migrated one. That way I would
have the name I prefer.

What machine ? Google your machine with the search term hard drive limit
or search the LEM machine profiles. Some machines have system access limits.
You can also search the LEM archive for info on your machine. Did it ever

I don't think G5s have any such a limit as I had referred to earlier. It
probably only put a reference string in the trash or it would have been a
while actually moving content.

Bruce will delineate the mixup.

PM G5 front panel FW port

2010-03-10 Thread John Carmonne
Hi All

I have a PM G5 2.7 Dual that apparently has a dead FW port, Kinda strange
that the port supplies power but no data transfer?? So I have a repair manual
that is very detailed for this particular machine.

The replacement method includes the removal of the logic board and power
supply. When I look at it i wonder if I have to remove all that. Has anyone
here done this service? I'm not at all incapable of this but it looks like it's
not that involved,

I have a new panel board on the way so when it gets here I'll replace it, also
can anyone think of another reason the port is data dead. I ran ASD 2.5.8 on
the machine and it reports all's well.

One more thing I'll be installing a Jive 5 unit to increase the HDD count to 5
2TBs is there a heat issue that maybe I can address at the same time? Or should
that be a separate topic?

Sudden onset whining noises can come, pretty much from only four
sources: the hard drive, the fans, the optical drive and the audio
system.

If you're experiencing lots of spinning pinwheels, particularly when
accessing the drive (opening, closing files, etc) it's the hard
drive. Back up your stuff NOW, and look for a replacement.

If it seems very warm, and you can feel air moving out of the vents
when the whining is happening, it's likely the fans. Sadly this is
logic-board replacement time as the fans are part of the logic board
on most models of these.

On a G4 if you can pull it out into the open and you can run it
while the case is open. This will help you identify where the sound
is coming from, down near the hard drive, in front by the optical
(or zip drive, if present) by the fan, the back of the power supply
(to id the fan in there).

The audio subsystem can be identified by unplugging any
speakers...if the noise stops, it's the audio, which will be a
special case to fix.

Pretty much, whatever you find making the noise, replace that part.

Suggest you backup the drive contents immediately. It may well be
dying fast.

Re: PM G5 front panel FW port

2010-03-10 Thread Richard Gerome

I had this happen on a Clamshell and it wasn't a bad FireWire port, (but not
saying it's in your case), it just could be??? I ended up taking this mother
board out of the one computer (Graphite and White) and putting it in an (Indigo
and White) just because I wanted the 466mhz in place of the 366mhz (I knew the
iPod didn't work but it would still charge) and when I did this my iPod worked
in the Indigo but wouldn't in the Graphite so I figured it was the
configuration with the HD??? Just saying before you go and invest in another
mother board maybe swap it into another computer just to see if it works or
swap the HD with one that is already set up and running an iPod or what ever
FireWire devise you are using...

Backup your irreplacable files right away. Or you will have much more to
worry about than the cost of a new drive. USB drives are a steal these days.
Or burn them to DVDs or even CDs.

The drive is probably factory installed and has seen a lot of revs. They
wear out. It is a throw away ( recycle) item. Part of the " great circle of
life!".

Re: Maybe Apple Cinema Display beats Dell after all

2010-03-10 Thread Tom
Well, the current Apple 24" Cinema Display for sale on the Apple
website does indeed have a glossy screen, and if you look at the
"ratings and reviews" that begin on that same webpage, you notice that
a great many people cannot stand the gloss. It sounds like I would not
like it either, since many of the complainers are using the monitor
for the same sort of work I do myself. I guess I'll end up getting an
older, matte-surface 23" Cinema Display off Ebay.

I cut and pasted below some of the complaints about the glossiness of
the screen just in the first three pages of ten pages of reviews:

"This thing is a freakin' mirror not a monitor. I would NOT buy it
again. It causes me eye strain and the reflections massively interfere
with viewing. After a few weeks of working with all my shades drawn, I
will either return it or buy a an anti-glare film to stick on it. I
have my matte MacBook Pro right next to it and there is no comparison.
The MacBook Pro matte screen works, this one does not.
Apple will
charge me a 10% restocking fee and make me pay for shipping it back if
I want to return it. Not impressed.

-

"Argh. I just started a new design job and they have me working on
this giant glossy screen. It's driving me nuts with the reflections
from windows behind me, people walking around, etc. It's extremely
difficult / impossible to focus on my work and ignore the reflections
and gives me an instant headache from eye strain. When I get a full
time offer I hope I can request for this to be switched out for a
matte screen.

-

"This monitor is kinda useless. I mean I love the color and the LEDs
give u a bright screen. The huge problem is the glossy finish. Stop
Making GLOSSY screens They are shiny and beautiful but the
functionality is horrible. Every time you are working on photos or
graphics you have to move ur head around trying to dodge the
reflection on ur screen. I hate it!! Thank god I didn't buy it but
apple should be more caring of its graphic designers/photographer
customers knowing that we (at least I do) prefer a matte finish. Look
at all those beautiful 52 inch TV screen out there (THX certified) NOT
ONE is glossy! There's a reason to it. I want apple to bring back the
older CInema HD displays!!

-

"The reflective screens are impossible to use in any kind of a normal
environment. Buy a third party monitor and don't waste your money on
this.

---

"I'm a full-time programmer for Mac & iPhone platform and spend more
10 hours in a day looking at screen. I want to see my source code, but
not my face. This screen is beautiful, but glossy kills all. Please
provide an antiglare option when buying Apple LED Cinema Display and
new iMac.

---

"I use this monitor in a fairly normal UK office (overhead fluorescent
reflectors, big windows) and the glare and reflections make this
monitor practically unusable. At best the reflections are extremely
distracting, at worst they give me a headache.

--

"I can't stand the glare. I paid $1500 for my last CRT monitor in part
because of the quality of the anti-glare coating. I want to see my
work, not myself or things behind me. Why has this escaped Apple?
Back to the Apple Store these go. You would think they would have a
good option for professionals considering they sell $5,000 desktops!
Please, Please provide a matte display

Airport setup driving me nuts!

2010-03-10 Thread Jake Zeppa
I just received the Airport Extreme base station I purchased off of eBay (B/G
version), which was designed to replace my Powermac which I've been using in
Software base station mode for years, in the hopes of better signal. Anyway, I
attempted to just use the new base station as my wifi hub, but the signal was
no better (and I'm also using the DrBott omni antenna). So my next idea was to
relay the Powermacs wifi signal around the furnace/fireplace which blocks all
signal into my bedroom. Unfortunately, after 3 hours of fiddling, I was unable
to get the base station to relay the Powermacs Airport signal.

I believe I had the settings all right. I put the base station into WDS remote
mode, and plugged in the airport cards ID number as the WDS main MAC address.
Everything connected fine, and Airport Utility showed a green light, but no
internet signal ever got to my Powerbook, even though I was right under the
base station. I guess the million dollar question is can you relay a software
base station signal, or is the base station limited to repeating other hardware
base station signals?

I really want/need signal in my room. It's pretty bad that my 1.67DL Powerbook
gets the same horrible reception as my older 400Ti Powerbook, and even worse is
my even older Pismo gets 3x the signal of both of them, ugh! I'm now at the
point of having to physically run ethernet lines under the house, and put the
base station directly in the room. I really don't want to cut holes in the
wall, and run wires under the house, so any ideas you guys have I'm open to!
Thanks for the advice, and sorry for the super long post.

   Jake Zeppa
