Hi Charles,
Yes, one of the difficulties I have had to face. On one hand we have the
arcade purest who wants the game to match very closely to the original.
On the other hand we have the not so purest view who wants everything
new and different.
Obviously, in a case like this both views can't be offered or it would
be a programming nightmare.

Re: [Audyssey] Montezuma's Revenge News

2007-11-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Well, that is where things begin to go wrong for a developer. You get
into this mind set of what will one more change do, then one more, one
more, and eventually the game is so different the original is absolutely
lost under a mountain of what will one more change matter thinking.
I wrote an email just a day or two ago about using Angela as a
character. I'm beginning to think perhaps maybe that wouldn't be in the
games interests after all. Not from end user complaints, but just from a
practical sense the game is really becoming different from the classic.
Which is one reason I made the change. To avoid any copyright fall out.

Shadow Dragon wrote:
But that's the point. We've already made so many changes, what's one more
change going to hurt? I mean the game is far, far from being the classic
game it was, its got modernized sounds, its got manual use of swords,
different sorts of traps, etc. Its almost, as Thomas said, a sequal. I
really think boss fights would enhance this game. *shrug* Its just a
suggestion though. I can tell you you'd get my money for the game if it had
boss fights in it, but if noone else wants them or its too hard to put in or
you just don't want to put it in for some reason, one sale probably won't
 matter, *grin*. Ah well.

As it might be the last obstacle before winning the game it could be

Hi Bryan,
Exactly. Murder isn't the word for it. One reason RPG games etc haven't
been too popular by the audio game developers is they just want to get a
game written and out to the customers in a timely fassion.
Imagine if it took me three or four years to write my Zelda clone. How
many side-scrollers, board games, or even FPS games could I produce in
the same length of time? Well, if the answer is three or so I would feel
that my time wasn't well spent. The pay out for the Zelda game wouldn't
likely be the cash value of those three other games I could have made.

Bryan wrote:
Something like Zelda would probably be murder to program, even a game as
relatively simple as the original. You'd have to program the overworld, the
underworld, the shops and the different enemies. And that's probably not
even scratching the surface. Tom did say he'd once considered writing
something like that but the amount of coding involved was enough to make him
 cringe.

I seem to remember several Wizards and Warriors games where you saw skulls
as bosses. They were of course huge and required quite a few hits to bring
down. You' either have to have four swords and then a constant supply of
them in the area, or a single sword with unlimited uses, which might be
problematic from a programmer's perspective.

Hi,
In this instance both are going to be problematic because I had no
bosses scheduled so the monsters don't have triditional HP values. All
the if statements check for is weather you have a sword and if monster x
is in range. If that is true kill it. In order to add any bosses, even
one, I have to completely rewrite the attack code which will put the
release passed Christmas.

[Audyssey] Monte bosses.

2007-11-25 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi all,
Over the last couple of days or so a few of you have suggested some sort
of bosses for the game. Especially, for the final level. I will be
honest about this and state I honestly had not considered this for the
game so there is no code in place to make this possible without
reworking the attack and combat systems for the game. Something that
requires a major rewrite of a few things in the game. Since Dec 15, 2007
is my scheduled go date I can't possably make that dead line and add
bosses. Now, what should I do?
I have two options as I see it. Either forego bosses, and sell the game
as is which may result in a los of sales because I failed to add
something people want. On the other hand I could begin taking pre-orders
this Christmas and ship product keys, but release the release when it
gets done.
Any thoughts?

Re: [Audyssey] Montezuma's Revenge News

2007-11-25 Thread Phil Vlasak
I checked out another site for Revenge,
The game has nine different levels, each consisting of 100 screens,
organized as a pyramid with a base 19 screens wide and with 10 screens
height (although the topmost screen is the title screen of the game, and you
cannot control Panama Joe when he is in this screen).

If I understand this correctly,

the bottom row of rooms is 19 wide,

the second row up is 17 wide,

the third is 15 wide

the forth is 13 wide,

the fifth is 11 wide,

the sixth is 9 wide,

the seventh is 7 wide,

the eighth is 5 wide,

the ninth is 3 wide,

and the top of the 10 row pyramid is 1 wide.

I have not checked out the USA version of Montezuma's Return, but does it
have the same pyramid shape?

Here is the site that described the maps:

perhaps release an upgrade later on down the road or even a sequel, which
would feature the bosses. I'll be honest. I like a good boss fight but I've
been waiting for Monty for two years. And i wasn't even one of the ones who
preordered the game from Alchemy. I'd say release it as is and then do an
upgrade later. I personally feel people have waited too long for this game
and I know how much you want to get it out the door.

 Hi all,
Over the last couple of days or so a few of you have suggested some sort
of bosses for the game.

[Audyssey] good good news about Monty beta6. IT WORKS!!!!!!

2007-11-25 Thread Talksina
for Thomas Ward:
I decided to give up with Monty, as I had no time to test longer. So I
uninstalled the beta3 I had on my machine.
Today I was getting bored, so I tried again and installed the beta6.
Surprise. It works!
And the nice thing is that it automatically detects my italian speech
synthesis!
Of course it pronounces the words in a bit funny way
but no matter! Important is that it works!
Well, in a second moment I think it'd be useful to translate the messages
but it's not depending on me. Thomas has already made a hard work. It would
be useful to have the possibility to create our own language packs for the
menu messages, so that Italian use Italian message, Brazilian use
portuguese, etc

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of. That's what gave me the idea for having
boss fights in the game in the first place. I'm really curious to see how he
would have made that work since swords were one time use and most other
weapons in the game were the same.

 Hi,
In this instance both are going to be problematic because I had no
bosses scheduled so the monsters don't have triditional HP values. All
the if statements check for is weather you have a sword and if monster x
is in range. If that is true kill it. In order to add any bosses, even
one, I have to completely rewrite the attack code which will put the
 release passed Christmas.

 Bryan wrote:
I seem to remember several Wizards and Warriors games where you saw
 skulls
as bosses. They were of course huge and required quite a few hits to
 bring
down. You' either have to have four swords and then a constant supply of
them in the area, or a single sword with unlimited uses, which might be
 problematic from a programmer's perspective.

Re: [Audyssey] Monte bosses.

2007-11-25 Thread Shadow Dragon
I can honestly say you'd get my money for the game even if there were the
promise of bosses. AKA you released it before christmas, but then released
some sort of major version upgrade later that added bosses to the game and
the like. I really do think bosses would add a whole new level of challenge
to this game, and it'd also give us more of something we haven't seen much
in the audiogames community to date, boss battles in general. Sure there's
the final boss at the end of judgement day, the super liam bosses, the
troopanum boss, but that's really about it. Almost every sighted game to
date has bosses in some form or other, and according to my brother, there's
a huge sense of accomplishment when you finally manage to beat that super
hard boss you've been trying to kill for the last day or so. I want to feel
that sense of accomplishment, though it'd probably be hard to make a boss
that hard in audio form. Honestly I'd really like to see swords be unlimited
too and you could just kill all monsters that came at you, but either you'd
have to make that a sepperate mode entirely, like some kind of story mode
rather than arcade mode, or it'd take away the classic feel of the game
entirely. It'd be really interesting to see what kinds of bosses you could
come up with to put in here, how to defeat them and the like, but I'm sort
of at a neutral opinion. I wouldn't buy the game at this point because just
walking through a temple, jumping over monsters and collecting things just
doesn't get my adrenaline up, I'm more of a fast paced gamer, but something
about boss fights has always interested me in a game. Still, its your game,
its sort of up to you.

Hi all,
I've just started out in World of Darkness and I could use a nudge in the
right direction. I went into the bedroom for a sleep and found myself in the
operating rooms, but there seems to be nothing there. So I woke up, grabbed the
cane, then the cane tip and key from the drawer in the coffee table. I put the
tip onto the ccane and unlocked the door, but each time i go outside he says I
can't explore without a cane! So I'm sort of at a loss for what to do next.
Any hints would be appreciated.

Hi Søren,
I have been able to complete the polyjuice potion
I made a mistake and have the word doxie repeat rather than a bee sound that
I had planned.
I originally had a bee sound buzzing as the sound of the doxie than I
changed the doxie to the word doxie and forgot I was also using it to denote
when you are in Dumbledore mode.
I have fixed the error and plan on uploading the new sarah patch tomorrow.
sorry,
Phil

Hi.

Have somebody successfully made the Poly Juice in the Sarah game? I have
tried to find out how to do it in the last 6 weeks now, but every time I
press enter on the cauldron, it just says doxy. Does that means I must do
something with the doxys, or does it means I haven't find all potions yet?
I'm really stuck now.

Re: [Audyssey] Monte bosses.

2007-11-25 Thread Dark
Hello tom.

Given the way the game works, you might considder bosses of a slightly
different style which would nevertheless be easier to code into the game.
I'm thinking, of the way bosses worked in the playstation platform games
Pandemonium and Pandemonium 2.

these were basically large game levels, where you were either being chased
or occasionally shot at by a large boss, and had to find certain objects
scattered around the level to defeat it. for example, one boss chased you
over a large amount of swompy terain (with you jumping swamps en route), and
to defeat him you had to run over several flaming catapults scattered
through the level. Another boss would chase you down with a large hammer
through a saw mill (taking swipes at you when close enough), and you had to
find balloons which would shoot you high into the air so that you could come
down on the boss's head. Also, sinse he was hell to avoid, you had to
remember to grab extra hearts scattered around the level.

Given the fact that monti is much more an exploration gameI wonder if this
sort of thing would be both easier to code, and more appropriate than having
anjella smith slash something up with her sword.

You would after all not need to code boss health, or too many attacks,
simply standard level with either a time switch (for an instant kill style
boss), or intermitant damage to your character if not performing a specific
action (as in the laser bot battle in superliam, though obviously for a
monti boss you'd be finding items or switches to defeat the enemy, not
attacking them directly).

As to game keys etc, well like everyone here I would of course like to play
the game Asap, but equally would want to see a finished game.

One question though is how much work were you planning to do with monti post
this christmas? if you were thinking of releasing the finished game and
moving onto other stuff, then personally I'd go for putting the bosses in,
if you were thinking of in fact releasing some kind of expantions for the
game, then they can probably wait, and I for one would be happpy to pay the
money and simply be able to play all the levels.

If you don't mind me asking another related question please Thom, at one
stage you mentioned a Monti map editer, with perhaps even the ability to add
background and or monster sounds so as to create different levels and
environments to explore. As an exploration freak, I'd personally love to see
something like this, though given everything you've put into Monti thus far,
I'd understand if you want to give it a rest for a while.

all the best,

Dark.

I personally perfer no bosses. I think you should sell the game as
currently planned, then make an upgrade optional, for a price, or maybe put
the feature as a toggle into the next version, again, for a price. By that
time, other features can also be included.

[Audyssey] still here

2007-11-25 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello everyone. Just wanted to drop a line that I'm still here. I have
not been very active, but I've been monitoring the list, even if I have
not responded. I have a mountain of electronic e-mail both at work and
at home to go through. The last few weeks at work have been hectic. I'm
deeply involved with getting GW Micro's GPS product out the door and
that has kept me busy both in and out of the office. What does this have
to do with games? Well, not much other than to say that as your fellow
co-moderator, I just wanted to let you know I have not dropped off the
end of the Earth mainly because the Earth does not have an end, being
round and all, but seriously. I'm here and what ever messages need a
response, they will come some time this week.

As for games? Heck, don't get me started. If only I had 36 hours per
day, I may have time to play a game or two. I was able to play Monty
beta 5 for a few hours, and before I knew it, beta 6 was out the door.
Think the only thing I commented was a manual typo, but that was about
it. I plan on playing it some time soon after I catch up on all e-mail.

Well, that is about it. If you want to know what sort has been going on
at work, check our blog at www.gwmicro.com/blog and you will get an
idea, if not, you can at least see that I'm not the only one who has
been busy this past month.

CYA!

different sorts of traps, etc. Its almost, as Thomas said, a sequal. I
really think boss fights would enhance this game. *shrug* Its just a
suggestion though. I can tell you you'd get my money for the game if it had
boss fights in it, but if noone else wants them or its too hard to put in or
you just don't want to put it in for some reason, one sale probably won't

addition to having the blind games as a hobby test i want to make a job of it

I'm not just looking around, I'm actually supprised why no one has not asked me
that question.
I am serious about thinking about testing as an actual job, or business.
Ofcause blindgames and any blindness related software tests are always free for
those that want them unless its jaws or something.
or someone that actually can pay.
I plan to do some online support and things to.
Thats actually a valid question though.
My dream is to have maybe say 4 projects going at once.
So far I have not got to the stage of getting 4 long projects going.

Hi list and Bryan,
I am not sure if I am doing something wrong, but I am trying to use the
bronze disc, but I get the message that the disc doesn't have any special
use here.
I have examined the trees. Are these the right ones?
Is this a bug in the game?
Thanks,
AC

You put your item (Bronze Disc) to use.
This item has no
special use
 here.

You're standing in a large grassy clearing in the midst of the swamp. The
ground is much firmer here. Three towering hardwoods (an oak, an ash, and
a maple)
dominate the centre of the clearing and stretch far above the surrounding
swamp.

The trees, which seem particularly healthy despite their surroundings,
seem quite out of place for this type of environment.

[Audyssey] {Spam?} Re: Monte bosses.

2007-11-25 Thread Timberwolf
I think the latter option would be cool, -- I agree that bosses would be
cool, although its cool enough as it is, and if it needs a lot of
re-writing, then I'm stuck between views here.

Forget the bosses and release the game sooner than later is my vote.
Most everyone has been waiting long enough.

 Hi all,
Over the last couple of days or so a few of you have suggested some sort
of bosses for the game.

Re: [Audyssey] Fw: Sryth: the Murk Temple

You have to use it while the descriptions of the three trees is still on the
screen.

 Hi Bryan,
I don't see an option for going East from Ethulle's hut. There are only
the options of going back south or entering the hut.
 Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

Go all the way East from Ethulle's hut. It's a long way. It'll be a
 clearing
with three trees. Each tree has an impression in its base. You need to
 fit
the disk into each of the impressions, although the order seems to be
 random.

 Hi list,
I have gotten all 7 shards and Ethulle has joined them, but I am
 having
 a
difficult time finding my way towards the area where the special
 weapon
is so that I can fight Tephtog.
Does anyone have any directions or suggestions on how to find my way?
Thanks to everyone and Happy Thanksgiving!
 AC
