Re: [Audyssey] What Are Considered Space Invader Clones?
That is true Tom, however in organizing the audiogames.net database I tend to work on a basis of "what is the main focus of game X" and "what is the most helpful genre classification" We have a great many arcade games, and it didn't strike me as too helpful to put montizumas revenge in the arcade catag ory, simply because it features a great deal more exploration and complexity than a basic point scoring game such as Crazy darts or boppit ultimate, or even pipe and the pinball games. thus, I classified it as action, putting it in the same catagory with Gma tank commander and Shades of doom, which seemed appropriate. Similarly, the Inspector Cindy games from 7-128 software, though classified as mystery games, I felt were similar enough in their gameplay to gamebooks that they fell properly under the audspis of that genre, sinse I really didn't want to create a genre catagory of mystery games just for one developers work sinse that doesn't seem helpful in actually letting people know what games are similar to which. Interestingly enough, this actually happens a lot with mainstream series. mega man 1 for instance on the Nes actually features a scoring system, and thus could be played as an arcade game, ie, to achieve the highest score, however this was very much taken out in the games' sequals. The same could be said for the Turrican series as well. Btw, descriptions of the various genre catagories and what reasons are used to classify games can be read at http://audiogames.net/page.php?pagefile=Genres |Beware the grue! If I had managed to release Montezuma's Revenge it would have been an arcade game too, but it would not be a Space Invaders type game. Therefore I think there needs to be an identification here between side-scroller and Space Invader clones of arcade games. In fact, if you have ever noticed on my web site I have both a genre and style catagory so I can specifically describe the type of game I'm producing. For example, on my web site Final Conflict is placed under the strategy genre and turn-based style of game play. If I had Sound RTS put up there it also would be listed as strategy, but the style would be declared as real time based rather than turn based. So the style and genre descriptions are equally important here. Re: [Audyssey] What Are Considered Space Invader Clones?
Hi Ken, Right. Although, games like Troopenum are close enough in concept to Space Invaders to be considered a clone as they have the same basic idea in mind. In any case I'd definitely like to see Space Attack. We haven't yet had a Space Invaders type game that truly compares to the original with the multiple columns of enemies decending with shields to hide under, etc. On 6/4/10, Ken wrote: > Those are not space invader clones. Hi Dark, That's completely understandable. Although, I hadn't heard of the Genesis Project either until Shaun mentioned it a couple years ago and wondered if I was continuing that project. Re: [Audyssey] What Are Considered Space Invader Clones?
Hi, Exactly. Not only the games you mentioned but in the early 1980's, perhaps 1980, or so there was a game called Demon Attack which was pretty much a knock off version of Space Invaders itself. Basicly, you had this cannon which you moved left/right trying to shoot down these demons with wings as they tried to blow you up. It was a highly adictive game, but the graphics were very poor because they were in black and white, and it was basicly the same game play as Space Invaders. The point is the classic arcade game where you move left/right while trying to shoot something out of the sky is as old as vidio gaming, and I for one don't want to see more games of this style. I lived through the 80's and saw my share of those games already. However, I also seen a lot more arcade games that were nothing like Space Invaders such as side-scrollers, beat-m-ups, Breakout style of games, etc. There is a lot more to the classic arcade game than Space Invaders that's for sure. As you and I know when the Nintendo came out the side-scrollers like Megaman really launched a totally new era of gaming. they were still arcade type games, but they were a huge departcher from the Space Invader and Pac-Man era of games. This is where I'd like to see accessible games go. True tom, I did forget about thrusting, though whenever I tried this on our atari 2600 it just made your ship fly in one direction aimelessly and nearly always got you killed, so mostly I stayed stil. That remake sounds awsome though. I'm rather sorry the torrent project fell thru, sinse that sounded most interesting and was meant to contain asteroid style elements, ie, asteroids that broke up as you hit them and then needed to be hit some more. hmmm, funnily when you said "do they relate to the craft" my first thought was to do with wizardry ;D. To answer your question though, space invaders clones refers to any game based upon the concept of the early 1980's arcade (and later atari), game space invaders, in which you have a gun, and must move left or right to shoot down descending spaceships before they land and end the game. Of course, it doesn't particularly matter accept for aesthetic reasons that the enemies are alien spaceships, they may well be copters and planes as in judgement day, or a psycho cyborg as in copter man.The point is the game mechanic of going left and right and shooting (often while dodging enemy fire). There have been a number of audio remakes of this game, --- judgement day, troopanum, dark destroyer etc, hence the discussion of it. imho we really! don't need another game of this type. Re: [Audyssey] What Are Considered SPace Invader Clones?
Hi Dark, Correction. In Asteroids your ship is not stationary. You have thrusters to move your ship forward, left, and right through the asteroid field. You shoot the asteroids to break them apart and then shoot the smaller asteroids etc until they are completely destroyed. On the higher difficulty levels a little green UFO shows up to give you something else to think about besides clearing asteroid fields. That's the original Asteroids anyway. Some years later in the mid to late 1990's Activision released an all new Asteroids game for the PC which was far more interesting than the Atari classic. There were cut-scenes and special missions to embark on. the over all story was changed in that there was this alien race that wanted to destroy planet Earth by sending an astroid field in the path of Earth which would have whiped out the human race. It was your job to intercept those asteroids and destroy them before they reached Earth. You were equipped with a ship with lasers, a battering ram, deflector shields, etc. After a couple of levels the aliens themselves showed up to see what you were doing and you not only had to take out the asteroids but whipe out the alien invasion fleet too. Pretty darn cool game. Re: [Audyssey] What Are Considered SPace Invader Clones?
Hi Louis, Well, while there haven't really been many accessible games that are truly a Space Invader clone, per say, many of the arcade style games out there like Aliens in the Outback, Troopenum, and Dark Destroyer are close enough to the SpaceInvader idea/concept that they are classified as Space Invader clones. Personally, I'd rather a developer stay clear of the arcade shoot-m-up type games were you have to shoot down spaceships, planes, helicopters, whatever as they fall out of the sky. In my opinion weather we are talking Aliens in the Outback or Judgment Day there are already too many games of this type on the VI market. There are plenty of other arcade games out there like centipede, Zaxxon, Time Pilot, Donkey Kong, etc that haven't ever been tried in audio yet. So if you are thinking of going the classic arcade route try something that hasn't been done before. Re: [Audyssey] What Are Considered Space Invader Clones?
The only one I've really played is judgment day, but you're right. There are already a lot of clones out there. What I really miss is the old Apple II Space Invaders. It was one of the first audio games I ever played. It would be wonderful if that could be ported over to Windows. Re: [Audyssey] What Are Considered Space Invader Clones?
What exactly do these space invators are. I myself played a few of them, do they relate to the craft? And judgement day was one of the games my friend asked to see if I could get a recording. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] What Are Considered SPace Invader Clones?
A space in vaders clone officially, is any game involving the sterrio targiting of enemies who's position appears in sterrio pan, and who get gradualy closer to the player. As to how to make a game more interesting, well I'm afraid unless your going to do what Liam did with judgement day and have lots of extras, there's really not much I can think of. perhaps, a shooting game based on a different concept. For instance, asteroids, where your ship is stationary but you spin arround to shoot thingscoming at you from all 360 degrees in a circle around you. Generally anything that avoids the basic left/right fire model would be good. Beware the Grue!
