[Audyssey] Smugglers 4 Is this really playable?

2008-09-15 Thread Che
  Hi all,
I purchased Smugglers 4 this afternoon, as I like to support any mainstream
developer that is willing to include features to make their games more
accessible.
But so far, this is a joke I must say. Either that, or I am seriously missing
something here.
I understand this game wasn't designed with the blind in mind, so I figured
I'd have to use the jaws cursor a good bit, I have no problem with that, but I
haven't even done the first part of the tutorial and I am showing signs of
carpel tunnel syndrome here.
When the tutorial says the planet you need to go to has been marked for you
for example, I arrow all over the place trying to find said planet to no avail,
so here I am stuck with no planet to go.
You folks that are playing this game, is this thing actually fairly smooth to
play with a screenreader, or should I just go back to playing Madden 09 on my
Wii and forget about it if I am not willing to arrow around dozens of times to
get one thing done? I had thoughts of creating scripts for this if it turned
out to be playable, but right now I don't see that as a possibility.
Someone please tell me I am missing something here, because the game sounds
really cool.
and yes, I have turned on compatibility mode, (thanks ShadowDragon), and I
have looked at the relevant parts of the manual, even though it is in the
dreaded .pdf format.
Signing out from near Alpha Centauri.

2008-09-16 Thread Che
  Hi ShadowDragon,
I did download and unzip the patch to the smugglers 4 directory, so I
think I am up to date.
Could you walk through a short sequence, for example attacking a ship so I
know if mine is running properly with the new patch? any other sequence
would work fine as well I think.
also, have you created any jaws scripts for this, or know of anyone that
has?
  thanks,

[Audyssey] Smugglers 4 planets

2008-09-17 Thread Che
Apologies if I missed the answer to this, but how do you find particular
planets in the game? I need to get to jupiter for a mission, but I don't see it
on any of the screens.
Is that a part of the game that just isn't accessible yet? If so, that is a
bummer for taking missions on.

tied to one planet, so if I go there I could go to that particular planet?
The only objects I see for the Sol system are sol, saturn, earth and the

What should I be looking for here so I might get to jupiter or any other
planet?

Re: [Audyssey] rail racer questions

2008-11-02 Thread Che
Hi, this is Che, the developer of rail racer, sorry for the delayed
response, been busy with other stuff the past few weeks.
Regarding multi player racing, you are given a list of tracks to race on,
once you select a track, it is started on my server and is open for other
racers to join. naming the race is not necessary, just let your friends
know what track to meet on. We have tested races with 20 players at once
with no slow down, although the average race is 3 or 4 players. as it
stands, you cannot limit the number of racers.
if you are used to top speed, rail racers MP racing isn't like that at
all. instead of connecting to another players computer to race, you connect
to my high speed dedicated server, which makes things much easier and more
reliable, no looking up IP addresses and all that.
as for a tutorial, i haven't done one, though I can if it is needed.
however, i do include MP instructions in the online manual, which can be
located at my site:

www.blindAdrenaline.com
From the feedback I have received from players, this is the best online
system currently available to us blind gamers, due to the ease of use and
reliability of the dedicated server, and will be the model for my upcoming
games, one of which should be released in time for christmas, so keep up
with the list here, as i will be announcing it here when it is ready for
play.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask, I will be checking the
list here more often the next few weeks.

 Take care,
Che(pronounced Shay)

Subject: [Audyssey] rail racer questions

Hi there,

Looking to order rail racer. Have some questions about multiplayer racing
and other things.

1. I want to get this for more than 1 computer. Are the keys computer
based?
2. When I join a game, do I get a list of games to join? Or if I start a
game, can I name it?
3. What if I'd only like to have 1 person race me? Is there a way to
control that?

4. What ports do I have to have open on my router when I start a game?
5. How do classes work? How much money to you get for getting in first
place? How many opponents are there in each race?
6. Does anyone know if Che's done a multiplayer tutorial- or am I missing
something?

thanks

Re: [Audyssey] rail racer questions

2008-11-02 Thread Che

 Hi,
Sorry, I don't think I made it clear in my previous post , (getting a bit
dsoft in the head in my old age), I try to be generous with folks that have
multiple computers, as I do myself, and it just isn't feasible to buy a
separate license for each, or really fair for that matter in my opinion, so
I allow an extra license for those with another computer, but you will need
to email me directly after purchase to receive it.
Also, I hope to have a new tournament started in the next couple of weeks
for all those that might be interested.

 Happy racing,

2008-11-07 Thread Che
Groan, we went through all this earlier this year rememberguys, it just
turned into such a case of two monkeys banging a football the idea got
abandoned.
Why not just list the 20 top games in two categories either free or
commercial and be done with it?
Otherwise we'll be debating into 2010 what categories to include, whether
this game is 2d, or that game should be in two categories, etc. etc. etc.

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Top 5 Games this Christmas

Hello Jason,
I think this is a fantastic idea. Though, at the moment the majority
of accessible games seam to fall into two major catagories. the first
is board and card games. The second is classic arcade. There is a
third catagory of FPS games like Sarah, Shades of Doom, and Monkey
Business that is starting to get more interest.
Now, by top five Christmas games I am assuming these would exclude any
and all free games. That drastically shrinks the game pool a lot. For
example, Jim Kitchen's games are all free, but nice little time
waisters. The Games for the Blind has some similar games like
Battleship, Yatzi, etc but they are not free. As a result you would
end up with a very scued comparison between Jim's games and Games For
the Blind's projects. Most of us like Jim's games because they are
free, and they use Sapi 5 directly. That isn't saying Games For the
Blind's Yatzi is any better or worse than Jim's version, but everyone
I know has a preference for Jim Kitchen's version. So if you excluded
Jim's games based on price then someone like Games For The Blind would
automatically get ranked higher then it normally would get if it was
polled side by side with Jim Kitchen's versions of the same games.
I'm saying all of this to say that polling for the top five Christmas
games isn't as easy as you think. We are a very small community of
developers and as a result there is a lot of issues to figure out
before running a poll. GMA Games makes games like Shades of Doom,
Lonewolf, and GMA Tank Commander, which are certainly among the higher
end of accessible gaming. They are liked for their replay value and
realism. Unfortunately, until my own Genesis engine is completed there
really isn't anything else to compare them to. Lonewolf and Tank
Commander are a one of a kind games. I wouldn't consider trying to
compare them to Super Liam, Troopenum, etc because it comes down to
comparing apples and oranges. You might get away with comparing Sarah
with Shades of Doom which is alright since they are both FPS titles,
but different genres.
You run into a similar issue with say side-scrollers. Right now
officially there are only two or three. I think they are Hunter,
Tarzan JR., and Super Liam. Hunter and Super Liam are both commercial,
but Tarzan has gone freeware. I am also currently developing a
side-scroller called Mysteries of the Ancients, but it won't b ready
for the Christmas season.

On 11/5/08, Jason Bell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Hello All,

I have posted a similar message on Audiogames.net and Dark there also
suggested I post here.

I'm new to accessible games so please bear with me. I work on the
webteam at the UK charity Action for Blind People and I would like to
start promoting accessible games through our site.

As a starter I thought it would be a good idea to post a 'Top 5 Games
this Christmas' list which I would like to develop further in the New
Year possibly with reviews but more likely with promotion of and links
to AudioGames.net and Audyssey.org and their users.

I'm not entirely sure how it might work if we don't have a definitive
list to vote on to begin with. So with Dark's help I thought maybe we
could run a submissions form on the Action for Blind People website
where everybody could submit their favourite games by interface type;

*Text based

*3D Audio game

*2D Audio game

Interface type is for simplicity reasons. At the moment I don't know
enough about the games to be getting involved in genre listings and
would like to keep it simple this time round. Maybe we could look to
develop this in the New Year. After a week of submissions I will count
them up and put the top games up in each category for a public vote from
which we would have a 'Top Games this Christmas' winners list

Slightly crude I know but it would be a start. I don't think the polling
system we have on the Action site is sophisticated enough to run a
proper poll with a number of lists but I will investigate further.

Any suggestions or help greatly appreciated.
Many thanks
Jason

 Hi to Will,
Perhaps you could join the classroom yourself and learn a bit of english

Perhaps once you graduated you would know what a run on sentence is.
Perhaps after that, you could move over to the manners and etiquette

Perhaps after that, you could go out and contribute something to the

Perhaps if people patted the backs of those that donate their time to help

[Audyssey] Testers needed for Hearts Online game

2008-12-02 Thread Che
  Hi all,
I've been developing an online accessible hearts game over the past few
months, and it is now at a stage where I would like to open it up for more
testing.
If you are into card games at all, you will really like this one. It has a
unique user interface, and since it connects through a dedicated server,
connecting to a game is a breeze.
If you aren't familiar with the game of hearts, it has remained one of the
top card games in the world for decades due to its addictive nature. It is very
easy to learn, not so easy to master.
The online version is completely playable as is, but I haven't added much in
the way of sound effects and the like.
I would like to add perhaps 6 or 8 testers to the beta team, so there will be
more games available online for players to connect to.
As it stands, there is no artificial intelligence in the game, so 4 players
are required to be online to play.
The game requires .net framework 2.0 and of course an internet connection.
If you have any general questions about the game, feel free to post them here
on list.
If you want to be a tester, send me a message off list to my email address:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
I will be adding the new testers over the next few days. Take care,

Re: [Audyssey] games that are not high deffinition audio compatible

2008-12-02 Thread Che

 Hi sean,
as a test, turn off your wireless connection if you have one and see how
that affects the crackling. For a while it was the only way I could get the
crackling to stop on my new desktop with a high end delta 1010 card in it,
then i reassigned the dma and fixed it altogether.

Hmmm teraformers use mp3s not sure about mudsplat, I suspect its the card,
everything crackles.

Drivers are now updated to the latest on the laptop website.
Crackle is still there, in fact still loads to much but its a little
better.
Not that I will but I wnder how much it would cost just to get rid of the
hd card and use a standard no frills card like an old soundmax.
This hd stuff does seem to rock but this card is not the full feature
card.

At 07:15 a.m. 3/12/2008, you wrote:

Hi Shaun,
Have you checked the sound format of the files of the games you are having
a problem with?
Most of my games now use 16 bit 22 k format but some games like our old
DOS games used 8 bit 11 k as they were four times smaller.
I noticed that they do not sound as good with my new computer as the 16
bit 22 k ones sound.

They did sound fine with my older sound card.

No tom its a realtech hd on a laptop.
there are standard drivers for it but my toshiba download site does not
have the latest and judging with all the crashes I had after upgrading
last time, I suspect that the drivers I have are specially designed for
this laptop as there are no new updates for anything from toshiba.

I don't even know if things will work well or not.
Ofcause when ever I install anything on here there is always a chance it
will be rood.
I can't run klango for the same reason the system gets unstable, I have
to uninstall it, and restart it a few times as well as do some other
things to get it back to a reasonable state.
I Only reconise the crackles in headphones but they are getting quite
bad.

Yes, please let us know if this fixes your problem on list, as I had to

Perhaps something to do with correcting some .net framework issues, not

Re: [Audyssey] Audyssey thread report for October 17 - 31 2007

2007-11-01 Thread Che
Good point Phil. If I may make a suggestion here, lots of these messages
were quick responses to an individual point or question, so at the end of
the day there would suddenly be like 5 or 6 messages from Thomas responding
to various posts. Something I did when I was getting a lot of Rail Racer
traffic on here was create one reply message, then jot down quick notes in
that message about each email I neded to respond to. That way, I was able to
go to the reply message after reading the days posts and send out one email
that covered all the items brought up that day.
This helped keep traffic to a minimum, as well as cut the time it took for
me to reply to questions and suggestions.
  Hope that all makes sense.

Re: [Audyssey] James North?

2007-11-02 Thread Che
From what I have gathered about North, we are better off without him.
He had nothing but disdain for blind gamers, charging the highest prices
for games that weren't worth it in my opinion, and didn't give a crap what
users had to say about his games. Compare this to developers like Thomas
and Phil who keep in constant contact with their customers and try to
implement ideas as much as is feasible.
Add to this the screw job he put on Thomas with Monty and Raceway and you
have an entity that at best laid down a negative influence on the accessible
gaming comunity.
Bottom line, fare thee well James North, and don't let the digital door
hit you in the butt crack on the way out.

[Audyssey] Developer input was Re: James North?

2007-11-02 Thread Che
I would like to point out something here that I have noticed time and time
again on this list and has more than once made me consider joining the ranks
of the developers that don't bother subscribing even though this is one of
the very few gaming lists available out there.
When a topic that derives negativity is posted, people come out of the
woodwork to comment on it, but when I post a message asking for commentary
or suggestions for a new online RPG game, something that is potentially
revolutionary and has not been done before, something that I have proven I
can do based on the features of Rail Racer, I get maybe 3 or 4 responses. I
don't know if this is due to the average age of the members of this list, or
just the general indifference people have toward putting some effort in
helping grow our little community, but it is very disturbing to say the
least.
I will leave it to other developers to comment on their own experiences if
they wish, but for me, the response to Rail Racer was overall a
dissapointment. The demo was downloaded over 2000 times, with around 200
sales to date. Most of the time I get comments like "It is too hard to
learn" or "I don't want to put the time into figuring out how to get good
lap times". I just don't get this. Gamers ask for deepr games with more
replay value, and when it is delivered, they shy away from it. Rail Racer,
like any endeavor that is richly rewarding is not a game you jump in and
start doing well at at first. You have to work at it a bit, but that time
and effort will be rewarded, just ask anyone that is currently playing in
the RR tournaments.
Please don't get me wrong, I really appreciate those that have offered
their support, both in ideas , suggestions and by buying my game, but the
amount of complaints about difficulty and the posts on other forums
regarding trying to crack my hard work are about equal to the number of
supportive posts. This is not the way to a healthy and thriving gaming
community folks.
I am afraid this is a hard lesson that USA Games is about to find out when
they release their first commercial game hopefully later this year. Based
on the amount of enthusiasm shown on list for the free beta versions, I hope
not however, I do not wish any develop the demoralizing experience of
dealing with the negativity towards their work I have had to endure.
I wonder if a gaming list devoted to adults only, where the overall level
of discussion might be on a higher level would be beneficial to the gaming
community.
There are a few hundred members of this list, something like that? But
look at the statistics Jim put out, there are only about a dozen members
actually posting much, that is very disappointing.
On the topic of North, I came into the party pretty late, right at the
time he left the list in fact, so all I know about him are the actions he
took from that time on, and as Thomas has said, perhaps I only got the Mr.
Hyde side of things, but if any of you think that James North was a good
samaritan for handing over the rights to Raceway and Montazuma's Revenge,
think again. He was only hoping to hold onto the pre order money he had
already collected, several thousand dollars worth in fact. Thomas was
stuck with code he had to completely rewrite, resulting in him ultimately
giving away several thousand dollars worth of sales for all his hard work,
and hoping that the post release sales will be worth it. North pulled one
there, no matter how you cut it, and I have read some of his comments about
the blind commmunity posted elsewhere, and trust me, they are less than
flattering, basically calling us a bunch of bozos. As far as I know, no
comment I made about North was ever read by him, so I had nothing to do with
his quitting the AG community, but back to my first point, people on list
are too worried about jumping on one bandwagon or another on this list, and
not concerned enough with giving us developers potential support.
Please remember, this community is only as good as we make it, and
developers cannot make it without the communities help.
For those of you that do put effort in helping us developers out, my heart
felt appreciation goes out to you, and I think you know who you are, for the
rest of you, um, here is a rotten banana peel, mooahahHahah.
  Officially dismanteling my soapbox now...
BTW, this is a pretty long post, so if you respond please be sure and
delete the existing text when you reply, thanks.
  Later,
  Che

2007-11-02 Thread Che
ah, I see Charles. That is unfortunate that you limit your possibilities
that way, because you are missing out on a h e double hocky sticks of a
game, grin.
Rail Racer may not be in the standard mold of racing games, but the
essence of what makes racing fun is all there in spades.
As for myself, I try every accesible game that comes down the pipe,
because you never know what you might find, no matter what the genre or
setting. For instance, I hate platform games as a rule, but I will continue
to check out Thomas' Monty, because you never know what kind of unique
elements it might have, what I might find as a gamer, or what might turn up
that interests me as a developer.
If all gamers took a more open minded attitude towards new games,
especially ones that push the envelope of blind gaming, I think we would all
be better off, eh?

[Audyssey] Fighting game was RPG games

2007-11-02 Thread Che
Yes, I am actually considering releasing a fighting game before the RPG
game, just so I can fine tune the fighting elements of the RPG first,
especially since I have received a good bit of emails showing interest in a
fighting game that can be played online with tournaments and the like.
Furthermore, a full blown online RPG would be very time consuming,
probably taking upwards of 2 years to produce a solid beta, so releasing a
fighting game as a stop gap interests me. Once I finish my current card
game project, I will make a decision one way or the other on this.
As for the football game, I have been collecting some sound effects for it
here and there, so it will definately be coming in the future.
Thanks for the input.

Re: [Audyssey] Developer input was Re: James North?

2007-11-03 Thread Che
Well guys, I never said anything about Rail Racer failing, far from it, we
have a dedicated core of players that play it day in and day out, especially
in the tournaments. I had hoped to move about 300 units, and that may come
to pass yet as good word of mouth spreads about my game, but right now I'm
right around 200 units sold. I did not get into this to make lots of money,
that just isn't going to happen in the blind gaming market, but I am
disappointed when people don't even give it a fair chance. I have seen this
quite a bit with Sound RTS in fact, as people can't jump right in and start
succeeding immediately, so a lot of them just never try again.
If I wanted to make more money at this, I would just continually release
another dumb shooter, or another platform game which seems to be quite
popular on list here, but does nothing at all for me as a developer, as I
want to test new ideas and gaming possibilities that haven't been done
before.
If players give Rail Racer an honest shot, and find it is not the game for
them, I have no problem with that, but those that run it for 5 minutes, then
delete it because it is a challenge to get good at, I just don't understand
that at all. Very few things in life that are rewarding are easy. If I had
given up on Sound RTS the first time I lost, I would have missed out on one
of the best gaming experiences available for the blind community at any
price.
In the end, these people are robbing themselves of a lot of fun and
challenge, as well as some dedicated developers out of much deserved sales.
I implore those of you that have given up on games because they seem too
difficult to go back and try again, some of the best gaming experiences
available out there are some of the most challenging.

  Che

[Audyssey] Raceway Trailer

2007-11-04 Thread Che
As a racing fan and race game developer I'd like to weigh in on the
trailer here.
You guys are way too hung up on the music here I think. The choice of
music is good I think, but why not put the actual Stones track in there?
Nobody is going to pinch you for using copyrighted music for it. I used the
Kill Bill theme for the Rail Racer spot, and I think it sounds great, and
helps add to the excitement level of the trailer immensely. If you haven't
heard it, you can check it out here:
I would also seriously consider adding winamp support in the game, as it
allows the player to listen to whatever they want from their own collection,
keeps the developer from having to waste time producing music tracks, and is
really easy to program in to boot. As in Rail Racer, I plan on having this
feature in all my future games, as players that want to listen to music as
they play the game love it.
If the aim of the Raceway trailer is to build interest in the game, I
would mix in a voice over describing some of the key features of the game,
as well as let potential customers know this is a very early peak at a game
that will be far more substanative than the trailer.
I think the sound effects are great, and those engine sounds should be
quite realistic when the RPM pitch changes are put in.
The pit crews voice is right on as well I think.
As I've said before, I can't wait until this game is released, I think it
is going to be a blast, and I know Thomas will do a great job on it.
See you on the track,
  Che

Re: [Audyssey] an new feature in rail racer

2007-11-08 Thread Che
Sounds like a great idea to me Claudio,
There is no reason why one of the players can't organize something like
this themselves, everything is there for it to be done, we have an open
online playing system, and a race scheduling system, so if someone organizes
it and is willing to keep track of points and races, no problem.
Let me know if you decide to do this, I can create an emailing list for it
if you get enough people interested.

Re: [Audyssey] Some Rail Racer tips please.

2007-11-08 Thread Che
I think the best thing to do is to make a simple track with just a couple
curves in it so you can practice taking curves, and pressing the D key in
the middle to see how close you are to the perfect lean.
It is also very important to move smoothly with your hand from 0 degrees
to max lean and back again, as the curve itself is a linear progression from
zero to max and back to zero. In fact, it helps to start moving a bit
before the curve, so you are already leaning when the curve starts, and you
won't have to accelerate your hand. One mistake some people make is to over
compensate when they scratch by leaning to far back, remember that wall you
just hit leans with the curve, so if you scrape in the first half of the
curve, it only takes a very slight adjustment to correct yourself.
Finally, it is very important to have a light touch with the mouse, you
should not be moving your arm much if at all, it is all in the wrist and
fingers, and get used to resetting your mouse position by picking it up with
your fingers and placing it back in the center position.
Keep practicing, I promise the mouse is not only a better control device ,
it is in my opinion more fun once you get used to it.
Regarding the accidental slow downs, this is easy to do in a curve,
because it is easy to pull the mouse back as you move it left or right, I
tend to push it forward a bit in the curves, so I don't accidentally slow
down.
  HTH.

Re: [Audyssey] F1time, an online F1 management game!

2007-11-15 Thread Che
  Hi all,
I cannot seem to find the drop down box for the factory options in the
game.
I was told one needs to hover the mouse cursor over factory to bring up
the drop down list, but I get no such drop down when hovering over that
link.
I am not used to doing this, is there a setting in jaws I might need to
change? I did some searching, and found you can hit control enter to bring
up mouse over options like this, but this technique is not working either.
Any help much appreciated, as need to test badly.
  Rock.

Re: [Audyssey] F1Time - Building car parts

2007-11-15 Thread Che
  Hi Orin,
you need to go to testing in the factory drop down list.
For a list of links to all the drop down pages, look for my forum post in
the newbie section of the forums, a kind member of the game listed direct
links for all of them.
Make sure you read the rules and guide carefully about testing so you
don't waste your laps.
Regarding the Popomundo deal, the problem was not that you didn't pay me
back the money you owed, it was that you never bothered to thank me for
loaning you the money in the first place, asked for and received all kinds
of help from me, again without showing any gratitude, then instead of
letting me know what was going on, and that you wouldn't be able to pay me
back, you didn't let me know anything at all, much less apologize for being
unable to fulfill your obligation. All very rude and disrespectful.
This is not the way to make friends in the online gaming world dude, or in
the real world for that matter.
  Later,
  Che

There is really little need to uninstall it, given todays hard drive
sizes, the 2 megs it takes up won't even be noticed, and it certainly
doesn't take up any system resources
otherwise.
Besides, you never know when you might need a little stress relief granted
by jumping big yellow busses. grin.

Re: [Audyssey] Homer on a Harley

2007-11-26 Thread Che
I made it over the first two busses, but it is surely not easy.
If I am not mistaken, you can guide your bike through the curves by
listening to the direction of the crowd, though it seems overly subtle.
Is there a key to get your speed in the game? This would help a lot
especially approaching the ramp, but perhaps that is a great part of the
challenge, guessing and aiming at your speed.
Overall though, I dig it myself, I definatly have to do some more
practicing though.
Thanks Jim, keep up the good work.

Thomas, you need to have a trigger set for when the game window loses
focus, at that point you can release control of the keyboard, and just the
opposite when focus is re gained. this is the way I do it with rail racer
and it works quite well.

Re: [Audyssey] a comment from a gamer - Re: Monty suggestion

2007-12-16 Thread Che
Yah Charles, that is the way it should always be I think, it is too bad
more of the accessible developers aren't on this list though.
One think I should add to my previous suggestion about the game losing
focus, you will probably want to create buffers for all your dynamic
variables, so when the player leaves the game for whatever reason, the game
is basically frozen in time, then those buffered variables are re loaded
when you unpause the game, this leads to less headaches when something like
messenger takes over in the middle of a game, and if you are in mid jump
over a snake or whatever, when you unpause, your character will be in the
exact same spot and ready to go.
I think this kind of system would be appropriate for most any game out
there, and I'm sure the same kind of idea has been implemented in many
accessible games already, I just had to reinvent the technique myself as I
had no idea what i was doing when i started rail racer.

[Audyssey] Sales figures was: Loquendo voices

2007-12-20 Thread Che
With a good bit of holiday sales, Rail Racer is somewhere around the 220
unit mark right now, not spectacular, but not terrible either. The biggest
marketing push for RR has come from word of mouth, as people realize there
is a great deal of replay value in RR with the online tournaments and
ability to create your own tracks to share with friends. Also, we have some
excellent volunteers arranging tournaments, handling new tracks and keeping
the RR community flowing.
I think in the future it is going to be very important to have that online
social aspect of gaming to have a successful long term shelf life, as most
games just don't have a lot of replay value for the most part.
I don't think anyone is ever going to make a living selling accesible
games, there just aren't enough blind gamers out there, but for a hobby that
brings in a little extra cash, it isn't bad.
  Happy and safe holidays,
  Che

Re: [Audyssey] Keys for my laptop

2007-12-20 Thread Che
I use hardware based keys for the simple reason it is much harder for
pirates to crack your software and distribute free copies of your games.
I offer replacement keys in a timely manner for those that have hardware
failures, but this has only occured a handful of times out of 200 plus
copies sold.
I know that there are lots of pirated versions of developers hard work
floating out there, and I wanted the most secure path available, because if
I findRail Racer being distributed as a crack, I am going to unleash one
very dedicated lawyer and pay whatever it takes to find the culprits.
Despite the best efforts of some talented jerks, as far as I know, RR has
not been cracked, and that is a good thing for all of us.
If I were a new developer about to release my first commercial game, I
would seriously consider going with a hardware based serial key system,
there will be a few inconveniences, but for me, having a secure product is
well worth it.

Re: [Audyssey] Product Security was Keys for my laptop

2007-12-20 Thread Che
Valid arguments, but I recently saw a list of pirated games a member of
our list here had, and it was basically all the major accessible game
titles. For me, protecting my intellectual property is worth the slight
inconvenience to myself as a developer, and it only takes a few seconds to
send out another key to a customer. Additionally, RR spits out a config
file that allows players to move their settings from one key to another, a
system that should work for any accessible game, greatly minimizing the
aggrivation from the customers standpoint.
For you folks on list that use and distribute pirated games, please take a
second to consider the damage you are doing to the entire community, as well
as the encentive you take away from developers to make new and exciting
games for all of us. Your actions are absolutely selfish and ignorant, and
you have no excuse other than you are a pinhead.

Re: [Audyssey] Product Security was Keys for my laptop

2007-12-21 Thread Che
Well, if the inconvenience to customers was a real problem I would have to
rethink my strategy, but as I stated before, it has only been a small issue
a handful of times, and a lot of thought went into making it as easy as
possible for the customer if a hardware problem exists.
I think as long as the customer feels they are getting value for their
money, that is the most important thing, and at Blind Adrenaline as with
most other accessible game companies, that is what we strive to do.
Another note on this, because I control the only server that allows online
racing, even if someone were to crack Rail Racer, they would not be able to
race online, which is at least half the fun of the game. This is about as
rock solid a piracy protection scheme as you can come up with.
I will continue to use this model in the future as it has served me well so
far, but I completely understand others reservations regarding a hardware
based system.

  Che

Re: [Audyssey] guitar hero or guitar zero

2007-12-29 Thread Che
  Hi,
I have guitar hero for the Nintendo Wii, and it is pretty cool overall.
Once you memorize the menus, you can navigate to the different areas you
need, and you can select the song you want easily, as it plays the first
part of each song as you navigate through the selections.
You will probably need to have a sighted person help you memorize the
sequences for each song though, at least that is what I had to do. Once
you get in the rhythm of the song, especially the easy ones, it isn't that
hard.
Also, you can go into practice mode where you can slow the song down and
practice it, which is quite helpful.
For those of you wondering what the heck this game is, it comes with a 3/4
scale guitar that connects to your game console. The guitar has 5 buttons
on the neck, and a bar that you strum on the body. Notes stream along the
screen, color coded to the buttons on the neck of the guitar, and you have
to press the correct button and strum at the exact right time for the note
to register. Play enough notes in sequence correctly and you get bonus
points, get too many wrong and the audience will boo you off the stage.
The game comes with lots of songs from the seventies and eighties that
will be familiar to any classic rock fan, along with some hits from the
nineties. The game producers went back and found the original recordings
and seperated the guitar tracks from the rest of the recordings, so if you
play correctly everything sounds groovy, but mess up a note or two and it is
quite noticeable.
There is a similar game out there called Rock Band, where in addition to a
guitar, you play drums, bass and have a singer on a wired microphone. My
cousin has played this one and says it is a blast.
I would give guitar hero a 7 out of 10 for accessibility, as you really
can't wing it as the sighted can because you have to memorize the notes.
All in all though, it is a lot of fun, and your friends and family will
absolutely love it.
  Happy strumming,
  Che

[Audyssey] Moderator appreciation

2007-12-29 Thread Che
Given the vitrol that Lisa Hayes attacked Thomas with on here, I'd just
like to state that her attitude towards our excellent mods is in the vast
minority.
Lisa rarely posts to this list, and when she does, it is usually to
complain about someone or attack them for one reason or another, and I for
one think her jumping on Thomas for doing his job is absolutely uncalled
for.
Pulling out the "I am a woman, how dare you threaten me" was a goofy and
warped tactic, the kind of thing resorted to when one realizes they are in
the wrong, but have no intention of apologizing, making amends, or otherwise
acting like a grown up and productive member of society.
Thomas and Raul do a great job for us, answering every request and
question, moderating this list with an even and lighthearted hand, and I for
one think we are very lucky to have them doing this pretty much thankless
task for us.
Anyway, thanks Thomas and Raul, and don't let the pinheads get you down,
they don't speak for the majority of us.
Later,
  Che

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway for Mac or Linux?

2008-01-02 Thread Che
I would do a survey before going through the trouble of cross developing
any accessible game. I'm afraid given the limited amount of Linux and Mac
users using accessible technology, it simply would not be worth the effort,
especially if you end up cutting out features to make it work on all
systems.
Regarding the mac users, the windows environment running on there works
just fine for accessible games from what I have heard, so I'm not sure how
much impact a mac version would have at any rate.
I agree with Karl that there are a lot of folks out there waiting on
raceway, and I'm sure over 90 percent of them are ready to roll with
windows.
As a developer, I have no intentions of going cross platform, I am quite
happy with the response I've gotten from windows users, but if I were doing
raceway, I would make it as good as possible for windows, and leave the
cross platform experiment for another game down the road after gathering
more info about linux and mac users.
I think it is a noble idea, but one that will probably be dissapointing in
the final analysis.
Whatever your decision Thomas, I wish you luck with it.

  Che

Thomas wrote:
It is true that most Mac users are running our games through Windows virtual
machines, but as I stated in an earlier post that is nowhere near as good as
playing the game that is natively supported by the os or run through
something like the Java runtime.
End quote

Do you know this for a fact? I have a few users of Rail Racer running on
Mac and as far as I know it works quite well. I was under the impression
windows was running natively, not in an emulated mode, but I could be
totally off base there.
Given the low overhead of accessible games in general, I would think any
accessible game would run just fine in a windows environment running on
Macs, given todays processor speeds, but I haven't checked this for myself.
I agree the envelope should be pushed with accessible games, and quite
hard, but given the overwhelming majority of windows users out there at this
point in time, for me the R and D time is better spent making a windows game
as fun and immerssive as possible.
But again, that is just me and my angle on things, if you decide to make
raceway or any other game cross platform I will be very interested in the
results, and I am sure other developers will as well..
I am not sure how complex the conversion would be for your Star Trek game,
but given that you already have the code for it, that might make a good test
case, eh?

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway for Mac or Linux?

2008-01-03 Thread Che
Kara rote:
Hi che, for myself, in the last two months, I've seen at the very least,
10 to fifteen new VI Mac users, and that's only in my own sphere. Now,
that translates to about $450 if a game is $30 a pop.
end quote.
Well, that is assuming every one of those mac users bought the game of
course. Probably 1 or 2 of those would buy any given game given current
rates of purchases. However, if the numbers of accessible gamers using macs
is large enough, or gets to be large enough, it would certainly warrant
further investigation into the possibilities of doing a mac version of some
games.
As for myself, it doesn't matter what the operating system is, I have used
SGI Unix boxes and lots of macs as a visual effects artist and I loved them
both, I use windows now because at the moment it offers more of the software
I need to work with, but if Apple were to get the upper hand on that end,
I'd switch in a heartbeat.
Does anyone have numbers on generally how many blinks are currently using
macs?

Re: [Audyssey] guitar hero or guitar zero

2008-01-07 Thread Che
Yeah, if you are referring to knowing how to play a song on a real guitar,
it doesn't relate in guitar hero at all. you will definately need sighted
assistance or a lot of patience to learn the patterns to the songs, and even
with help, the solos for me at least are basically impossible.
It can be played, but without sighted assistance, I for one don't have the
time to put into it to make it worthwhile. I'd rather spend the time working
on my real guitar skills, grin.
It is a great game to have around for company and parties though.

Re: [Audyssey] steering wheel with topspeed and rr

2008-01-09 Thread Che
What is the brand of wheel you bought? If it is a logiTech, there are
profiles you can bring in for Rail Racer that will configure it for you. If
it is any other brand, you should still be able to program the buttons in
RR's options.
Check the Rail Racer email list, there are several people there using
wheels.

[Audyssey] 2007 Accessible game of the year

2008-01-23 Thread Che
  Hi all,
I recieved this pleasantly surprising message from J Squared today, thought
you all would be interested.
It brings up the possibility of the list voting for various awards for
accessible games as well, any thoughts?

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WINNERS ANNOUNCED IN FIRST EVER BLINDBARGAINS.COM ACCESS AWARDS

HUMANWARE, SENDERO AMONG TOP RECIPIENTS

Kalamazoo, Mi, January 23, 2008 - After weeks of nominations and hundreds of
votes, BlindBargains.com has announced the winners of the first ever Blind
Bargains Access Awards. The accolades are being handed out to companies and
individuals in ten categories and represent the best in accessible hardware,
software, and design.

Taking top honors was Humanware's Victor Reader Stream, winning both the Best
New Product or Innovation and Best Hardware Product. The audio book player
was recognized by many as a breakthrough product and also propelled Humanware
to the honor of best Company of 2007. The stream is the first
commercially-available
device to play the new digital book format provided by the National Library
Service.

Sendero Group also has attracted a following, winning in the Best Software
category for its popular Sendero GPS product. The latest version of the package
includes faster route calculations and descriptive audio points of interest.
One of the instrumental figures behind Sendero's success, Charles La Pierre,
was also recognized as 2007' Person of the Year.

"We were thrilled at the level of participation and interest our users showed
in this contest," commented site owner J.J. Meddaugh. Well over 100 ballots
were processed during the contest, which included both write-in nomination and
voting rounds.

Freedom Scientific's JAWS for Windows continues to be the screen access product
of choice according to the site's users while Blind Adrenaline Simulations'
Rail Racer took the honor for Best Accessible Game in this year's tightest race.

The awards also recognized the contributions by webmasters, bloggers, and
online retailers to the blind community. Dean Martineau's popular Top Tech
Tidbits
Repository was voted as Best Blindness-related Website while APH's Fred's Head
Companion took the honor for Best Blindness-related Blog. Both resources
include a wide variety of knowledge, information, and links to relevant and
interesting information. Finally, Independent Living Aids was recognized as
the Best Store for Blindness-related Products. The retailer sells hundreds of
items from talking watches to playing cards.

Re: [Audyssey] 2007 Accessible game of the year

2008-01-23 Thread Che
  Hi Phil,
I actually asked JJ about that because I definately thought Sarah should
have been on that list, but he said it was released in 2006, I'm not sure
where he got his info.
I myself did not even know of the awards until today, so I am not sure who
nominated RR for it, he said several folks nominated it, but didn't tell me
who. That is really too bad, because unless I am mistaken Sarah didn't
actually get released until 2007, right?
Thanks for the congrats man. What do you think of the idea of the list
having a yearly awards for various game categories?

2008-01-23 Thread Che
Yup, I agree, was there something on the audio games forum about it? I'm
not sure where they got their voters myself. The first I heard of it was
today when JJ let me know I had won, which was rather odd.
At any rate, it would be a rather simple thing to have our own vote on a
website, with multiple categories such as best action game, best strategy,
best music etc.

2008-01-24 Thread Che
There are existing php scripts out there that will allow for voting, and
will tabulate everything for you, additionally it will provide some level of
protection from one person voting multiple times, which is something to
consider as well.
I have a set of these scripts for Blind Adrenaline and they work quite
well, no need to program anything from scratch for this.

Sure, they are already set up on my site, so we can just use them from
there. They were a pain in the crack to get set up, so no need to go through
all that again. I won't have any games up for voting this year I don't
believe so there will be no conflict of interest.

Yes, those guys make good games, but a lot of people don't know about them
because of the dumb mistakes they make, such as not getting someone with
english as a first language to do their instructions for the english
speaking market. I wrote them about this, letting them know what a turn off
it is that you have to decode their documentation, but they don't seem to
care from what I can tell.
It is too bad, because they do make good stuff.

[Audyssey] voting on game of the year

2008-01-28 Thread Che
As I mentioned in my previous post, the scripts aren't easily set up and are
licensed to my server as well as they are a commercial product.
As I stated before, they are ready to go, all I have to do is set up the
voting, no need for you guys to worry with the programming or installation
of scripts, we can just run the voting from the blindAdrenaline site and
save everyone a lot of time and trouble.
I've had various votes for things on the site and it all works fine.
Let me know what ya think folks . So far not many people have shown much
interest in voting anyway, so it may be a moot point. Or maybe people are
just being shy...

  Hi Thomas,
Just my opinion, but I think there are some things the membership of the
list should discuss regarding how we are going to go about this before we
start organizing behind the scenes.
Refer to my previous message to Dark for my thoughts on nominating games.
We could put a list on the web site of every game released last year from
which people can nominate if we go that route.
Also, perhaps there should be some discussion about various categories for
games.
  Just my 2 cents worth.
  Later,

Re: [Audyssey] voting on game of the year

2008-01-28 Thread Che
  Hi Dark,
Well, we can do any setup for the voting we want, which is why we need
feedback from the members here as to what they want.
I think categories should have nominated entrants myself, so we don't have
to include every single game made last year. If people don't think enough
of a game to nominate it for various categories, then there isn't much point
in including it in the voting it seems to me.
Perhaps a month would be enough time for nominations to be collected for
various categories, then a couple weeks for voting, then the results could
be posted on list, on the web page and in Rons mag.
  Any thoughts out there?

Re: [Audyssey] voting on game of the year

2008-01-29 Thread Che
Well, perhaps two main categories would work best, so we don't get into
fragmenting everything down into sub groups too much given the limited
amount of games we have available.
Perhaps folks could nominate games for two categories, commercial games
and beta/free games together, or perhaps one category for all three.
This way, games which cost money and therefore have a much smaller user
base won't be up against free games and betas that have over a thousand
players.
Beyond that, I'm not sure we want the complication of sub categories such
as sports and strategy games at least for this initial run, especially given
the rather tepid response from members about the idea so far. I think we've
had 3 or maybe 4 people respond to the thread, not exactly encouraging for
huge voter turnout.
  Feedback?

Re: [Audyssey] voting on game of the year

2008-01-29 Thread Che
Yes, I should have made that distinction, thanks for pointing that out.
I am sure you are right that many more people will vote than are
responding to this thread, especially once we publisize it a bit.
Right now I propose we list all games released in 2007 so folks can
nominate them for voting in two categories to keep things simple:
1. Commercial games including paid betas
2. free games and betas

So basically we would end up with a commercial and non commercial game of
the year.
There just seems to be too few game releases of different categories to
have seperate votes for sports, strategy etc.
  Thoughts?

2008-01-30 Thread Che
  Hi Dark,
Yes, I see your point there.
Perhaps a few more sub categories would be in order, maybe something like
this:
  best overall commercial game
  best overall free game
  best strategy game
best action game
best sports game
best mud if there are new ones
  best fps
best fantasy game

Would this cover it? Each sub category would be broken down into free and
commercial as well.
  Thoughts?

Re: [Audyssey] Award catagories was: voting on game of the year

2008-01-30 Thread Che
Right, but the problem with voting on commercial versus free games is the
user base is ten times that for a free game as it is for a commercial game,
and it would not be a fair competition since so many people would be voting
for the free games, not having played the commercial ones, so for me, this
seems like a must have difference in categories.
Regarding the sports category, I think these could be lumped into action.
Like wise, a card game could go into strategy, we just have to broaden the
definition of the categories a bit to keep the number down it seems to me.
Also, like Thomas and Raul I have lots of stuff going on outside of this
voting deal, so I would rather keep the categories to a manageable number,
less than ten total categories would be ideal.
  Later,
  Che

Re: [Audyssey] copyrights

2008-01-30 Thread Che
If any developers have thoughts of using any copyrighted material and
making a profit from it, I highly suggest you set up a LLC for your company.
This stands for limited liability company, and basically protects the owner
from lawsuits going after their personal property for any claims.
Though I don't intend on pushing copyright stuff with blind adrenaline,
this protects me if some bozo wants to claim my software screwed up his
computer or something similarly frivilous.
A good lawyer can do this for you for around $100, plus you will need a
checking account for the company for tax purposes.
Having seen some small businesses get burned, I highly recommend this
setup for any small game developers.

Hi Bryan,
Oh, yeah. Lucas Arts is very protective of their Star Wars copyrights.
Have you read the Star Wars terms of use lately? If not here is a small
quote from the Star Wars terms of use snipped from their license agreement.

Quote
STAR WARS; STAR WARS
: EPISODE I THE PHANTOM MENACE;
STAR WARS: EPISODE II ATTACK OF THE CLONES;
STAR WARS
: EPISODE III REVENGE OF THE SITH; STAR WARS
: EPISODE IV A NEW HOPE;
STAR WARS: EPISODE V THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK; STAR WARS
: EPISODE VI RETURN OF THE JEDI (collectively referred to herein as the “
Star Wars
Pictures”) and all other Lucasfilm productions, and all logos,
characters, artwork,
stories, information, names, software, and other elements associated
thereto are the sole and
exclusive property of Lucasfilm Ltd.. Any use of any of the materials on
this Site
other than for private, non-commercial viewing purposes is strictly
prohibited.
The sale, auction, lease, loan, gift, trade or barter, or use of any of
the Star Wars materials
contained herein, for any other purpose except as expressly permitted
pursuant to
these Terms of Use, in any form, media or technology now known or
hereafter developed,
including the use of any of the aforementioned materials on any other
Web site or
networked computer environment, without a prior written consent from
Lucas, is expressly
prohibited. Except as expressly provided for under the Terms of Use, the
creation
of derivative works based on the materials contained herein is expressly
prohibited.
You may download one copy of the materials on any single computer for
your personal,
non-commercial home use only, provided you keep intact all copyright and
other proprietary
notices. Modification of the materials or use of the materials for any
other purpose
is a violation of Lucas’s copyright and other proprietary rights.
End quote

That is only part of the license agreement, and what I did show is very
strongly worded. I read later on in the agreement that any ideas,
emails, stories, pictures, etc you create with Star Wars instantly
becomes the property of Lucas Film and Lucas Arts no questions asked. So
even if I wrote such a game according to the terms of use section of the
license agreement they have the right to take the game away, destroy it,
or whatever they want to do with it. Kind of hard to fight a license
agreement like that in court blind or not.
While some developer can sit around saying they won't bother me because
I am blind that is being a bit unrealistic. They might not, but then
again they have every legal right to do so. Their license agreement
sounds like they are pretty serious and they don't take very kindly to
any copyright violation in any way shape or form. Even though they may
be in the wrong for not offering an accessible SW game for us.

Re: [Audyssey] Award catagories

2008-01-31 Thread Che
I thought Phill posted just such a list here a week ago or so, which is
where I developed my list of categories from.
Feel free to post a category list you feel would work, but I think what I
posted is a good starting point, just needs to be fleshed out a bit.
I stand by my argument that having free games up against commercial games
is an unfair competition, regardless of how RR did in a limited vote.
If you gave 2000 decent but not great computers to 2000 people, and had
them vote with 200 that had superior computers asking them which was best,
it is obvious which would win by sheer number of users of the free system.
This is not to say free games are inferior to commercial games at all, but I
think you get my point.
Phil, if you are out there, do you have a revised list of games for 2007
that is all inclusive?

[Audyssey] copyright solution

2008-01-31 Thread Che
Well, it seems to me there is an easy solution to this problem.
Make your game with generic sounds for everything, don't give it a title
that is a licensed name, then upon game release a zip file mysteriously
appears on the net that has all the sounds from the Star Wars universe or
whatever that neatly plugs into the game and replaces all sounds.
The zip replacement would have no trackable source, and certainly would
not have anything to do with the company that released this generic game, it
just happened that a fan released a sound pack for it as far as they know
and nothing they can do about it in any realistic way.
This would cut into sales a bit, as you would not have a household name
to market the game with, but word would get out quickly enough amongst the
game community about what the deal was, and the sound pack would soon be
shared amongst players.
If you use this idea, you can send a cut of the profits to
[EMAIL PROTECTED], grin.
  Later,
  Che

make sure you have .net framework 1.1 installed, vista doesn't come with it
out of the box.
If you have administrator rights, it should work if the right version of
the framework and direct x are on there, let me know if this helps.

[Audyssey] Rail Racer steering wheels

2006-03-29 Thread Che
  Hi all,
I am currently working on the code to handle force feeback steering
wheels.
How many of you have steering wheels?
If you have one, can you assign keyboard strokes to your buttons?
I am trying to figure out the best way to program in gathering racer data
such as speed and fuel from the wheel buttons.
  Thanks for any info,
  Che

Re: [Audyssey] Rail Racer steering wheels

2006-03-29 Thread Che
Right, I could manually assign each button, but the last steering wheel I
bought allowed you to assign keys to the buttons via the steering wheel
software.
If mose wheels are like this now, that would be a good thing, because I
don't want to lock users into a particular configuration of their buttons
that they might not like.
Does your software allow you to assign keys to your buttons Raul?

Re: [Audyssey] Rail Racer steering wheels

2006-03-29 Thread Che
  Hi ya,
When you say you can control which button enables which function, how is
this done?
What I am getting at is the possibility of assigning keystrokes to the
wheel buttons, instead of hard coding the buttons, thus enabling the player
to assign buttons to whichever key they wish.
  Thanks,

BTW, for anyone that is in desperate need of a microphone, you can use a
spare set of headphones as a mic. Just plug your headphones into the
microphone jack of your soundcard and speak into the earpiece.
This doesn't produce the best audio in the world, but it will work in a
pinch.
Also, another excellent voice chat site is http://www.vipConduit.com

Re: [Audyssey] Logitech joystick help

2006-04-16 Thread Che
The profiler can be used with jaws, you just have to use the jaws cursor a
bit.
If you are recording keystrokes in the profiler, put the jaws cursor on
record, then hit the left mouse button key. This will begin recording.
Now hit whichever key you want to assign.
Next hit the left mouse button key again and the recording will stop.
Once you've done this a couple of times it is fairly easy to do.
Everything else in the profiler is pretty much standard stuff.
  Good luck,

Re: [Audyssey] Logitech joystick help

2006-04-17 Thread Che
  Hi ya,
I'm not sure what you mean about the twist button.
This is just to record keystroke combinations to your joystick.
Say for instance, you wanted to map the "S" key to a joystick button, this
would allow you to do it.
Just hit record with the jaws cursor left mouse button, then your
keystroke or strokes you want to assign to that button, then click stop
recording by left clicking with your jaws cursor again.
All of this is found under assign new command in the profiler.
I gave instructions for this, because it is the hardest thing to do in the
profiler with Jaws, and took me a while to figure out.
Everything else in the profiler is fairly basic windows interface stuff,
though one has to use the jaws cursor a good deal, and unless there is
something I am missing, requires no sighted assistance.
I don't know about any other screenreaders though, they might make doing
all of this a breeze.
   Good luck,
  Che

Re: [Audyssey] Programming computer games?

2006-04-27 Thread Che
  Hi ya,
I am programming Rail Racer, a futuristic racing game, using vb.net 2003.
Like Jim said, it has everything you need to program excellent games, and
with todays modern screaming fast computers, language speed really isn't an
issue, especially since we don't have to deal with graphics.
I agree with Thomas that the documentation out there for vb.net could be
better, especially regarding the directX stuff, but overall I'd give it a b
minus.
The only thing I have run into that I have had any major problems with is
force feedback control. I am not sure if this problem has been fixed in
vb.net 2005 or not.
The reason I haven't upgraded to 2005 is because there are currently no
advanced jaws scripts for this version as there are for 2003. However,
scripts are being worked on for 2005.
Overall, I am very pleased with vb.net and will probably stick with it for
my next game as well.
BTW, I only started programming last August, and I have a fully playable
racing title that should be ready for full release this summer, so that
gives you an indication of how fast you can learn the language if you don't
mind burning the midnight oil.
  Good luck,
  Che

Re: [Audyssey] Programming computer games?

2006-04-27 Thread Che
I think the important thing here isn't the language you pick up and learn,
so much as the content you put out.
Any of the discussed programming languages can be learned and made to do
anything you want for the accesible gaming community, but what will make
your game stick out is your creativity.
It seems to me that we've been stuck for a while without any truly
original game ideas out there.
I think if this genre of games is going to move forward, developers are
going to have to think further outside the box, and start coming up with
titles that aren't tired remakes of what has come before.
My reccomendation is to learn the basics of your chosen language, produce
a couple of simple games so you learn how to maneuver some of the more
common pitfalls of game creation, then sit back and spend a good deal of
time outlining and polishing a unique game idea before coding your
masterpiece.
As a wise and wealthy friend of mine one said, "Originality sells."
  Just my two Lincolns worth..

Re: [Audyssey] Programming computer games?

2006-04-27 Thread Che
I bought the standard version of vb.net 2003 for 90 bucks last summer.
You can get the 2005 express version for free right now, but I'm not sure
what all limitations it might have, if any.
I learned by reading the Microsoft Developers website, and tons of
tutorials on the web.
It really is quite easy to learn overall, but I would have to look at
learning c# if I were to do it over again, as there is a lot more
documentation for the C variants, especially regarding directX, which is
important to game development.
Also, I agree with Thomas that safari books is an excellent resource, and
probably the cheapest library of books you will ever have access to.
I bit off quite a large programming chunck with such an ambitious project
as Rail Racer, and fortunately, I have been able to get it done, But I would
reccomend you start off with much simpler projects to get started. I did a
couple of small shooter games while I was learning, but , if I had it to do
over again, I would opt for something easier for my first commercial game.
  Good luck,

It is my understanding that directPlay as we know it is being phased out
with the advent of Windows Vista and directX 10.
I myself am studying windows sockets in the hopes of getting online play
going, and I would reccomend the same to anyone else considering future
online play.
There is a set of activeX controls called socket wrench out there that
aids in the creation of multi player socket connections that you might also
look into.

Re: [Audyssey] strategy games

  Hi Charles,
I have played with those guys on ftp before.
Most of them use a physical chess board and simply relay their move to the
other person. This works quite well, and can be done with messenger or any
other text chat program.
I can tell you from personal experience, the guys on ftp are very good and
if you are new to chess, they will wipe the floor with you with no remorse.
I reccomend KChess if you are looking for an excellent and accessible
chess program, though online play is not an option as of the version I have
at least.
  Good luck.

[Audyssey] Chess for the blind

2006-05-05 Thread Che
You can find out about K Chess at:
http://www.arkangles.com/kchess/

I bought KChess Elite myself, but they have different versions at
different prices.
The guys in the chess parlor on FTP are very helpful for the beginner
chess player.
You can use the KChess program to keep track of moves if you play against
someone online, but I highly reccomend you get a chess set for the blind
from Ann Morris, or any other vendor of blind products, as having a board in
front of you allows you to feel the pieces and get a good overview of the
board.
There are also chess lessons in audio format out there that you can track
down and listen to.
  Good luck,

[Audyssey] Rail Racer update

2006-05-06 Thread Che
  Hi all,
I just wanted to keep everyone up to date on the status of Rail Racer, my
racing simulation for the accessible gaming community.
We are entering the final stages of the alpha, and I hope to be releasing
the beta soon for purchase to the general public.
Since my last update to the list, a lot of progress has been made.
Besides general improvements to the overall game play and audio
environment, the game now includes the ability to choose from a variety of
tracks, and earn money from race victories that can be spent on nitro packs
which allow a dramatic temporary boost in speed.
Also, a web posting system has been integrated, which allows you to see
how you compare to the other racers out there, both in track times as well
as money earned from winning races. Lots of potential here for some serious
smack talking.
the track editor has been finished, which will allow players to create and
race their own tracks, and I will be hosting a competition upon release of
the beta that will pay out cash money to the best tracks you guys can come
up with. The winners of the competition will also have their tracks
included in the final release of the game.
Currently, I have several tracks ready to race, including reproductions of
Michigan International Speedway, Watkins Glen, Daytona, and others that are
brand new creations, such as a slalom course. Many more tracks will be
included in the beta and final releases. One main difference with these
tracks over the real versions is you will have to deal with jumps and loops
in addition to efficiently maneuvering the track.
The next stage of development will include the ability to purchase more
advanced vehicles for racing against superior competition, which will in
turn allow one to earn more money for races.
As you earn more money, you will unlock higher level tracks, so there will
always be an incentive to drive as fast as possible for that good old green
and bragging rights.
The alpha testing team has just received this update, and depending on how
testing goes, I should be releasing the beta in the near future. I don't
want to give any specific dates, as odd things can happen in development and
I don't want to dissapoint folks, but so far things are progressing
smoothly.
I would like to thank the alpha team for a great job done so far, and I
invite them all to post their thoughts about the game on list here if they
wish. If I am not mistaken, I think all the alpha team members are
subscribed to the list.
I have updated the website with more game info, and you can check that out
at the link below.
If you have any questions, feel free to send them on, as I am always
looking for thoughts on how to make the game better.
The slogan of Blind Adrenaline Simulations is "Games from one of us, for
all of us" and I mean that completely.
I feel the best way to make a great and unique game is to include your
suggestions, so bring it on.
I will be uploading a new audio demo of the game in the next few days, and
I will update the list when it is ready.
I look forward to hearing from you, either directly or on the list here.

No worries, plenty of variety for any racing taste, and in case you don't
like what is available, you can create your own track.
