 Now I've two question:

 1) does this happen also to you ? try run
 cd /etc
 grep -rls ' /etc/config-archive' *
(the previous two lines are commands but xorg has no diesis sign at the
 moment)

 2) Has anyone idea on how to solve this ? I prefere dispatch-conf to
etc-update and if it's possible have it usable ...

That is the reason I don't use dispatch-conf. This extra that it would
add to my /etc/init.d files would prevent the init file from starting. I
just stick with etc-update and carefully check the differences in the
new file and my old file before telling it to keep my old file or use
the new one.

Did some googling and it seems that the error message can be ignored, unless
of course it's giving you operational problems. From what I have read, it
appears to be a hardware mix problem involving dma issues. Over here I run
MSI, SOYOTEC and ABIT motherboards and as I mentioned in my previous email,
no such error message has turned up in either messages or dmesg output.

Try pulling the linksys card, clean the edge and slap in back into the
motherboard in a different slot.

Didn't solve the issue. I guess as soon as I can, I'll have to get a
different motherboard in order to solve this. Either that or a different
network card.

With this version, you need to make a copy of /usr/share/TTF/luxisri.ttf
in /etc/splash to make this work. I had to change what I had in my
grub.conf too. Here is what I had to change it to on my system:

splash=silent,fadein,tty:8,theme:emergence quiet CONSOLE=/dev/tty1
initrd /boot/fbsplash-emergence-1024x768

This works for me. You may be using something besides vmlinuz on yours.
Set it accordingly.

When I first switched to Gentoo, I tried using the ebuilds for the

nvidia.org and have never had any trouble with them other than when I
updated to the linux 2.6 kernel and they hadn't made one yet for that
kernel. In this case, I found the patched one for this kernel by
searching the forum. I have had to make some adjustments to pam console
configuration and search for and removed or rename some of the libraries
that were installed by Mesa. All of this is mentioned in the readme from
nvidia.

I just this morning downloaded and installed
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run from nvidia.org and it installed and
is running without any problems. I have a Riva TNT2 card

I tried to do the usual root (hd0,1) and setup (hd0), and everything goes

What can I try next?

[gentoo-user] Problems With K3b

I can create and burn cd's using the commandline for cdrecord just
fine. I tried re-emerging k3b, cdrtools and cdrdao but it didn't solve
the problem. I can't find where anyone else is having the same problem

[gentoo-user] Patch for libcdio mjpegtools

2004-01-21 Thread Kathy Wills
I got the patch to fix the install-info: warning: no info dir entry in
`/usr/share/info/*libcdio*.info.gz' message. The ebuild for libcdio
does not use any patches. I've never done this before. How do I get the
ebuild to apply the patch? I've tried looking at some of the ebuilds
that do use patches. I'm still not sure what I need to add to the
libcdio ebuild to get it to apply the patch. Or do I expand the tar.gz
file, apply the patch, and then make a new tar.gz file?

I still haven't found any patches anywhere to fix the following:

install-info: warning: no info dir entry in
`/usr/share/info/mjpeg-howto.info.gz'
install-info: warning: no info dir entry in
`/usr/share/info/mjpeg-howto.info-1.gz'
install-info: warning: no info dir entry in
`/usr/share/info/mjpeg-howto.info-2.gz'
install-info: warning: no info dir entry in
`/usr/share/info/mjpeg-howto.info-3.gz'

Has anyone else had any luck at finding a patch or fix for the
mjpegtools errors? I know there was a thread regarding this earlier, but
I don't think it was ever resolved. The errors don't seem to cause any
problems. It is just annoying to get the message that there are errors.
Unmerging and remerging don't solve it. I've tried that already.

[gentoo-user] Errors Compiling GTKGlarea and Gle

2004-01-05 Thread Kathy Wills
I am having trouble compiling gtkglarea which is needed for eroaster. It
is looking for gl.h and glx.h. Gle which is needed for xscreensaver is
looking for gl.h and glu.h. It is my understanding that these are part
of Opengl which is normally supplied by Mesa. I have an nvidia card with
the package installed from the nvidia website. It is working just fine.
I can run glxgears and they work. What can I do to solve this problem?

I took a look at /bin/domainname. It is a link to /bin/hostname. It
opened /bin/hostname in an editor and scrolled down to the wording it
looks like maybe (none) should refer to nisdomainname or ypdomainname.
I'm going to try it when I reboot again and see it that resolves it
without having to do the script.

Ok, based on what I found from the link to /bin/domainname, if you use
/etc/nisdomainname instead of /etc/dnsdomainname the (none) goes away
and the name shows up correctly if you have just the machine name in
/etc/hostname and the domain name in /etc/nisdomainname. In my case, it
shows up as machinename.domainname.

[gentoo-user] Domain Question

2003-12-11 Thread Kathy Wills
When I reboot my computer to the console before typing startx, I see:

machinename.privatedomain (none) Gentoo version number.

Of course all of the above has the correct information, I just changed
from the true for this example. My question is, why the (none)? I have
the correct information in hostname and dnsdomainname files. The
/etc/init.d/domainname is started when I boot. Is this possibly because
I only have eth0 and no eth1 or did I miss something when I did the
network configuration?

I believe that you didn't setup your etc/hosts file correctly. I
could be wrong but this looks like the logical mistake.
I believe your missing your machine name. Here's a copy of mine.

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.1 deadmeat.deadmeat.com deadmeat
  ^ ^^
   machinename FQDN machinename again
I probably shouldn't of used the same machinename as the domainname but
it works fine, so I left it alone.
Hope that helps.
Sections 19 and 20 of the install guide show examples.

Yes, the /etc/host file is and has been correct so that is not the answer.

It looks to me like you are missing libwombat. It doesn't seem like an
orbit problem. That is why orbit doesn't provide what you need. I found

Well, I re-installed (emerged in gentoo parlance) gimp-print, foomatic (and
related packages) with newer versions. I still have the same problems with
the command-line foomatic-configure. When I try to use the web admin tools
with cups (Add Printer), I cannot select the device. I put in the name I
want, click on the Continue button, the Device dropdown is empty - no
device choices.

In the cups-doc.html that Kathy suggested, 5. Configure CUPS. says to
basically use the Add Printer with a web browser and follow the directions,
which I have done.

Any ideas on how to get a device to be recognized?

I do have /dev/lp0 and I can cat a text file to it.

Did you do /etc/init.d/cupsd stop then /etc/init.d/cupsd start after
doing your upgrades? Is the parport module loaded? Do you have any error

[gentoo-user] Alsa Kdemultimedia

2003-11-15 Thread Kathy Wills
I just switched to gentoo a couple of weeks ago after using Slackware
for several months. The explanation for not including alsa support in
kdemultimedia with gentoo is bug reports #2324 and #39574. Bug report
#39574 does not even exist. Alsa was working just fine for me with kde
and Slackware. My question is why can they Slackware developers get it
working when there are all sorts of problems getting it working with
Gentoo? I have a soundblaster live card and everything works just fine.

Yes, I noticed that the bug reports were old. But, still alsa gets
disabled in the ebuild for kdemultimedia-3.1.4r1. Since I'm so new to
gentoo, I'm not sure just how to change the ebuild to see if it will
build alsa support into kdemultimedia. What I did try, resulted in a
message that there were no unmasked versions of kdemultimedia to build
or something to that affect. I didn't write the error message down. I
just changed it back to the default ebuild and it built just fine with
alsa support disabled.

I'm not a KDE user anymore but looking at the ebuild there is a line below
alsa not supported that is commented out (the # sign). Basically this does
not allow alsa support to be built in no matter what your use flags.
However, the comment at the end indicates you can use oss emulation. Did you
merge alsa-oss? If so and if all your modules load then you can use the oss
part of alsa. The ebuild sets myaudio to enable oss at the start. From what
I see it's a KDE problem. Maybe you can bug them as to why it's not fixed -
or maybe it is in the betas?

I followed the gentoo alsa guide when I set up alsa. I have emerged
everything alsa related except for the alsamixergui and alsa player.
Alsa itself is working.

It has been merged that is how I found out that it disables alsa via a post-install message. Doing further research the bug #39574 it mentions is not a bug number with bugs.gentoo.org but is a bug number with bugs.kde.org. It seems the problem is with kmidi and kmidi has been removed from the 3.2 version of kde so maybe when 3.2 becomes considered stable this will be resolved.

The first case looks okay to me but the block device error will come from the
second case (/dev/floppy) because that's a directory (try /dev/floppy/0)
--DB

I'll give that a try. Hope that stops the errors.

Hi Kathy,

u do not like read manuals, don't u ?

In both of lines u have mistakes in flag user :-(
/dev/floppy is not dev special, but directory, therefore the error :-)
really u like to use ext3 FS on floppy ? (M$ floppy uses vfat)

That is one of the ways I tried. I was still getting the error message

That's pretty rude - especially since you are wrong. Both the user option
and the users option exists. Both allow any user to mount the device. The
difference is that users will allow any user to unmount the device whereas
user will only allow the mounting user to unmount it.

[gentoo-user] Question About Iptables Script and Sound

2003-11-03 Thread Kathy Wills
I have searched the forums and connot find an answer to either of my
questions. I will be changing from Slackware 9.1 to Gentoo 1.4 starting
later tonight. My computer acts as the firewall/gateway for my small
home network.

With slackware I use a script file /etc/rc.d/rc.iptables to povide this
funcionality. It is based on a conf file in /etc. My first question is
do I place these two files in the same location in Gentoo as in
Slackware in order to provide the same functions?

Next, I have a Soundblaster Live sound card. I plan to use alsa for
sound. Do I need to emerge emu10k1 along with the alsa?

I will be doing a stage 3 install to start with as my husband would be
hard to live with if he has to go for more than a day or so without
internet.
