[gentoo-user] GAIM-Encryption

2005-01-24 Thread John Dangler
I'm running gaim 1.1 on a 2.6.10-r4 kernel. Anyone used gaim-encryption and
know if it works ok? (the sourceforge site says to set USE=crypt but the
portage site doesn't mention it).
I'd like to know if it works ok. Thanks.

with windows I use v 1.1.1 and I don't have problems to. except for

I guess. I'm relatively new to Gentoo.

What would it matter? What does emerge strip binaries of? I install

AFAIK, 'strip' removes all debugging info from binaries.

That's kinda retarded.
From /etc/make.conf (details on FEATURES variable):

# 'nostrip' prevents stripping of binaries.

As you can see, this behavior can be disabled. For most people, there is no need for
debugging information and it just weighs binaries down. Also, a lot of people using the
x86 architecture have '-fomit-frame-pointer' in there CFLAGS which effectively prevents
any useful debugging.

[gentoo-user] gaim segfaults when signing onto Yahoo

2004-01-21 Thread Andrew Gaffney
Gaim 0.75-r5 has been working just fine for me for about a week since Yahoo started using
the new authentication scheme on the new server. Today, it segfaults when it starts up. If
I hit Cancel when its logging into Yahoo, it loads fine and connects to AIM. If I try to
connect to Yahoo manually after beinging signed in with AIM, it segfaults. I haven't
upgraded anything related that would cause this problem. Just in case, I re-emerged gaim
and it behaves the same. Anyone else getting this?

From the gaim FAQ:

Can Gaim send files?

TOC can, in a limited way, and OSCAR can send files over AIM in 0.60 and
higher. Yahoo can send files in 0.75 or higher. Most protocols are
capable of it, but Gaim hasn't implemented anything yet. Support is
being worked on and may partially work for MSN and Jabber.

there is no icon in the systray of gnome 2.4 anywhere :( Any suggestions?
I have to activate the plugin eacht time I start gaim. Otherways gaim
will not hide but close on clicking on x, though the systra option is
 activated.

You have to add a specific applet to the GNOME panel to give the systray
icon somewhere to dock to. It's part of the standard applets package, and
is called something like system tray applet.

I have emerged the gnome-applets package, still no go. Other trayicons

Hrm... I don't seem to have any problems. I am using v0.72. My system,
as of right now has been up for 5 days, and gaim (which has been running

Tom,

Yes, I have noticed gaim to eat up quite large chunks of memory and cpu
time after some days (3 or more). Resulting in me having to kill it as
it ceases to refresh the buddy list. But the behaviour is sporadic at
best, I updraded to 0.72 and so far have 12 hours on it running fine.

Are there any particular plug-ins or multiple protocols u are using that
you could try turning
off and observing memory usage after that? If you witness in excess of
100Mb again then I would consider filing the bug report.

I do use quite a few accounts, with 1 ICQ, 1 AIM, 3 MSN and 1 Yahoo.
(Really, don't ask... ;)
The plugins that I'm using are Buddy State, Message Notification,
History, Text Replacement and SysTray.
Do you think I'm maybe being adventurous?

I have my suspicion, although completely unsupported by any fact, that
it may be the history plugin and its new searching, as this was
partially rewritten (from what the ChangeLog say anyway) and this
appears to be when the problem started.

I will file a bug report and see where it goes, maybe something that has
been identified and fixed in CVS.

Cheers,

Since they're animated images, I'll assume for now that they're GIFs.
So, what versions of media-libs/giflib and media-libs/libungif do you

[gentoo-user] Gaim Windows and Fonts

2003-11-10 Thread William Lee
Hey all,

I have a little problem with Gaim. The window size of the buddy list and
the message windows are huge. I thought it was because I used the gtk2
flag when compiling, so I unemerged the package and tried emerging it
with USE='-gtk2 gtk' flags, and still no dice. The windows are still
large, and if I try to resize the message windows, all the buttons get
scrunched together.

There's probably a very simple solution, but I haven't stumbled acrossed
it yet. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I think there's a plugin to do this in gaim 0.6 and later. Unfortunately,
it also mutes the message-arrival sound until you open the window...

Something about Gaim is not quite right.

Last night I had trouble staying connected to MSN using gaim. I also tried AMSN just
to see if it was a software issue and I had the same problem with AMSN. Today the
problem seems to have corrected itself. I tried gaim on two separate systems; one
with 0.70 and other with 0.71. No problems with either one today.

You can also use Yahoo's Java web client, at http://messenger.yahoo.com/.
Works pretty well from what I can see...and I don't have to emerge 15 gnome
packages to get ymessenger working (I use KDE).

This is what I was told to do Chris:

ymessenger-1.0.4.1 is in ~x86 so ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge ymessenger. This will
install
rpm2tgz and install ymessenger that works. The problem with all the other IMs is
because Y!
changed the password encryption. People are looking at it.

Don't emerge -u as this will update other things from ~x86 not having to do with
ymessenger, just
do an ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge -p ymessenger and it should only be a few files.
Then just run
the whole command again without the -p to install.

It looks like 0.64 has been pulled all together. I decided to look at it
and re-synced then did:
# ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge -up gaim

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuildU ] sys-apps/groff-1.18.1-r2 [1.18.1-r1]
[ebuildU ] sys-apps/man-1.5l-r6 [1.5l-r5]

Can someone tell me why I need to update xfree to update gaim (to an
unmasked version) if I accept keywords? Wierd huh? Well, if you think
that's odd look at the next 2 examples:

# emerge -Up gaim
--upgradeonly implies --update... adding --update to options.

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

[ebuildUD] sys-devel/gettext-0.11.5 [0.11.5-r1]

I am running it and have not had any problems with it to date with the
exception that file transfer and insert picture do not function. I am able to

The problems I've found are mostly with MSN support. Some messages appear blank
(That's an old problem, happens to me with 0.63 as well) and every time I add a new
contact it segfaults. But I don't add contacts sooo often as to make a big deal out of

 recieve files though.
The problems I've found are mostly with MSN support. Some messages
appear blank (That's an old problem, happens to me with 0.63 as well)
and every time I add a new contact it segfaults. But I don't add
contacts sooo often as to make a big deal out of it.
I had more problems than this with 0.64. It would crash randomly (would
never run for more than four hours) which would cause me to lose
messages (checking logs isnt fun).

However, chipx86, one of the gaim devels, has written a patch against
0.64 to fix some crashiness. I was expecting the gaim maintainer to
make an ebuild of it.

[gentoo-user] gaim encrypt

2003-03-06 Thread Bryce Verdier
Alright, i was building the new gaim.59.9...and i started to download
something called encrypt.tar.gz. So i tried to find some information about
it... and i can't. Freshmeat, the gaim homepage, nothing seems to be able to
point me to where i can find out about the encrypt gaim plugin.

Does anyone here know?

thanks in advance,
bryce

I believe that's this plugin:
