[GNHLUG] MerriLUG Nashua, Thur 18 January, Jarod Wilson Expounds MythTV
Who : Jarod Wilson, Red Hat, Author Hacking MythTV (ExtremeTech) What : MythTV review, tips, questions answered, books autographed. Where: Martha's Exchange Day : Thur 18 January **Tomorrow** Time : 6:00 PM for grub, 7:30 PM for discussion :: Overview First and foremost, MythTV is a digital video recorder (DVR), not unlike TiVo -- both even run on top of Linux. But if you're not too keen on the idea of a monthly fee, dislike encumbered access to content you've legitimately recorded, or want the freedom to tinker with and expand the capabilities of your DVR without limitation, a TiVo may not be for you. For most Linux users, chances are, Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center Edition (or anything that runs on Windows) isn't the ticket either. Ever heard of someone exporting video from their DVR to a video iPod with only two button presses on a remote? How about watching high definition television recordings without having to lift a finger to skip commercials? Want to have multiple televisions in your house all able to watch the same pool of recorded content? Want to watch that same content on the deck, streamed wirelessly to your laptop? MythTV can do all that and more. Come find out how! RSVP to Jim Kuzdrall for dinner to assure adequate seating. !!! If you are a Regular Attendee, let me know and I will put you on said list. Then, just let me know if you are NOT coming. !!! Vonage vs. Verizon [was: Anyone had experience with Comcast SMC modem/router? ]
Dan Jenkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: The Comcast service has been exemplary though, as long as we haven't needed to call them. We finally replaced all our Verizon lines with Vonage, as Vonage had far better sound quality and reliability than Verizon's voice wires could provide (at less cost). How long have you had Vonage? I've had them for over a year now. In general, I'm satisfied, but there seem to be some annoying quirks with them. The most frequent problem is the echo. It's not there all the time, but it's there quite often. The other problems I've had are: - Making a call and the recipient can't hear me, but they're loud and clear. - Dropped calls where suddenly I'm talking to a dead line Of course, for $27/month, they certainly beat the same feature set from Verizon for $75/month! I certainly won't go back to Verizon and spend almost $50 more per month. Oh, and I have had occasion to use 9-1-1 from my Vonage line and had emergency response within 10 minutes of the call. So, no worries there either! -- Seeya, Paul -- Key fingerprint = 1660 FECC 5D21 D286 F853 E808 BB07 9239 53F1 28EE A: Yes. Q: Are you sure? A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. CD/DVD writer woes
(Using debian, 2.4.34 kernel) Has anyone else had problems with the newer versions of cdrecord (aka: wodim) ? I have 2 different CD writers in my system, one of which also does DVD writing. The system definitely sees both of these drives, one of which is also a SCSI drive. I can place media (at least CDs) into either drive and mount the file systems on them, but neither of then can be written to. I know I've written to at least one of them in the past and created both iso9660 and audio CDs on it. I want something I can easily tell my wife how to deal with: Go pull the plug on the LinkSys box, count to 10, plug it back in. As I understand it, you can do things that way while still using an open standard. Just because it gives you the option of rolling your own Asterisk PBX doesn't mean it excludes you from the option of using an off the shelf Linksys box to do it for you. Personally, I might never setup my own * box, but I'd pick something like BroadVoice over Vonage simply because they offer choice, rather than a locked down proprietary system. -- Chip Marshall [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://kyzoku.2bithacker.net/ GCM/IT d+(-) s+:++ a25? I use Vonage over Broadvoice for one reason: I don't want to admin a phone system. I want something I can easily tell my wife how to deal with: Go pull the plug on the LinkSys box, count to 10, plug it back in. and Broadvoice has that. They have a plan that's about the same price as Vonage, where they give you a box and tou plug it in. Or, you can buy your own and they send you the settings to get it to connect initially and then it gets it's updates from them (This is what I do, I have an HT-286). I did the initial setup and that was it. But, with Broadvoice, I have a choice. One icy night in southern Chelmsford approx 10 yrs ago my wife spun out in her car, which was crippled after she hit a curb. When she tried to contact the cops from a nearby house by dialing 911, she could at first get only busy signals and then on all subsequent attempts it just rang with no answer...:-/ I'd be more concerned about having the same gang of thieves controlling *all* of my communications channels, which would seem to be the case if you get your TV and your Net and your phone all from ComCast.
