[Goanet] GOAN'S JAZZ FOR CLINTON..................... now for Goans of London
GOAN'S JAZZ FOR CLINTON. now for Goans of London One of Goa's topnotch reedman, Joe Pereira (from Calangute), popularly known as "Jazzy Joe", performed along with Aninha Lobo (piano) and Michael Gracias (bass guitar) for US President Bill Clinton, at the Oberoi Lobby in Bombay on March 24. Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, danced to Joe's inimitable tune. "It felt great. I'm going to remember it for all my life," Clinton said of Joe's jazz. The US President is a saxophonist himself. Hence Joe had kept a saxophone standby in case Clinton decided to jam up as he sometimes does. Jazzy Joe struck some of his specially selected and traditionally applauded hits like Satin Doll, Train, Sophisticated Lady, Take 5, etc. Joe's only disappointment was that Clinton did not take the stage with the saxophone. ...GoaNow - April issue. Now Joe , the Jazz King comes to London and wants to meet as many Goan Musicians as he possibly can. Joe has this great ambition to bring Jazz into Konkani Music and we are sure we can help him to achieve this. The Goans of London , proudly present a Music Workshop . [Goanet] Many told us they were waiting their whole life to see this. ........................
MESSAGE BY THE ORGANIZING COMMITTEE Celebrated for the second time in Portugal, World Goa Day has found a fertile ground to grow and expand itself. Last year we only had a lunch, with some 80 persons present, but there was big discussion about Goan Identity and other aspects related to our motherland. The great interest shown by the Portuguese (and international) press also proved that many other people also admire Goan culture. This made us step forward to a greater celebration of Goa Day in 2002. We joined hands (all six associations of Goa, Daman and Diu here in Portugal) and formed an organizing committee, which worked out, in great collaboration, this year's programme. The above report describes well the success these events had, but besides having achieved great attendances, the most important thing in which we had success was to pass the message of unity and community spirit, at least on World Goa Day. More than a commemoration closed upon our community, we had the pleasure to show Portugal our rich traditions and our great culture, besides discussing Goa and Goans, the Goan Diaspora and, also by traveling to the past, the Future of Goa. Many people congratulated us for this great message we are passing, started in 1999 by Rene Barreto. Many told us they were waiting their whole life to see this. All these aspects gave us even more energy to begin preparations for 2003 celebrations of World Goa Day in Portugal - "Dia de Goa, Damão e Diu 2003". Joining hands once again and with all the suggestions and ideas that were given to us, we will be giving the example one more time to Goans in Portugal and around the world: Unity is not only necessary, but it's also possible. [Goanet] World Goa Day-2002............Celebrations in Portugal
burning topic "Who killed Tanuja Naik?". He read (and commented upon) a good selection of cuttings from the Goan newspapers on the not yet clarified mystery surrounding the case of Tanuja Naik who was recently shot dead at Marcaim. One of the main issues arising from the press reports, police news releases and various debates was the "Goans vs non-Goans" dichotomy. Oscar Mascarenhas, though speaking before Agualusa, related his thoughts as "Another Stranger in Goa" because, as he said, though born in Goa he came at a very early age to Portugal where he has been ever since, with only occasional travels to Goa, but always following from this end whatever goes on in the land of his birth. Agualusa opted to say only a few words, preferring to answer questions which he felt sure would come from the audience. Finally Catarina Portas spoke of some of her experiences when together with photographer Inez Gonsalves she spent some time in Goa to prepare her book, and quoted two India-based stories, one of which was related to her by late Aleixo Manuel da Costa in Panjim. After an interesting period of questions and answers, the session was wound up by 9.15 p.m. and was followed by a closing dinner at Casa de Goa's "Xanti" restaurant with the participation of 80 persons. It is worth recording that, the month of August being normally a "dead" month in Portugal because it is chosen by most people for their annual vacations, all these "Goa, Daman and Diu Day - 2002" celebrations were well attended, with "house full" at the "Teatro da Trindade" and the "Xanti" restaurant and with an overflowing of Casa de Goa's conference hall's sitting capacity of 100. The merit for this success goes to the Organising Committee formed by representatives of the six existing associations, but in a special way to the general coordinator Constantino Xavier. [Goanet] Congratulation !
- Original Message - From: "yugved" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, August 21, 2002 2:23 AM Subject: Congratulation ! No.: 214 of 2002 21st August 2002 Dear Mr. Barreto, This is to congratulate you and your colleagues for celebrating the Goa World Day on 20th August to commemorate inclusion of Konkani in the 8th schedule in the Indian Constitution. It is a wonderful movement you have started and we, who are working at various levels and in various fields connected with the nurturing of the Goan identity and development of the Konkani language, are overjoyed to hear about the success of this movement. While on the subject, may I point out that language is the most essential and the most important component of a culture ? You will find that even on the Internet, famous websites have always clubed these two words, language and culture together to indicate their inseparable nature. Unfortunately, many Goans living abroad can neither understand nor speak Konkani and do not find time to make an attempt to learn it. It would be useful if attempts are made to teach Konkani to Goans who do not know it and to spread the message that the feeling of being a Goan cannot be fully justified unless one knows to speak Konkani and one has some knowledge of the achievement of the language. I shall be happy to be in touch with you and your friends on e-mail to serve the cause of Goan identity and the Konkani language and culture. Wish you all the best, With regards, Yours sincerely, A. [Goanet] celebrate 20th August as World Goa Day
Possible duplication. Goenkars , I was pleasantly surprised to hear from our friend Damodar Mauzo , the Konkani writer from the village of Majorda. I was more pleased as Damodar came in support of - The World Goan Heritage events / celebrations which continues to be held around the GOANWORLD. Damodar very well summarizes our efforts - by stating " I am glad that Goa International has taken a lead to celebrate 20th August as World Goa Day. Such a move will help the process of unification of Goans worldwide and also create an atmosphere of better understanding among the Goan peoples across the world. 20th August is all the more important in view of the Goan struggle for Identity. " We Goans can now very proudly say - that WORLD GOAN HERITAGE celebrations is well supported by Goan in Goa too ! some of us may have had doubts , but no longer. Thank you Damodar. TOGETHER we can make a difference for Goa and Goans everywhere rene barreto ---Original Message--- From: dymauzo Date: 19 August 2002 02:27:44 To: Rene Barreto Subject: Goa Day Dear Rene, I am glad that Goa International has taken a lead to celebrate 20th August as World Goa Day. Such a move will help the process of unification of Goans worldwide and also create an atmosphere of better understanding among the Goan peoples across the world.20th August is all the more important in view of the Goan stuggle for Identity. The Indian Constitution, whereby the States were formed on linguistic basis, was framed much before Goa was liberated. The Constitution has a list of regional languages recognised by the Government of India, as the Statutory Languages of India. Konkani was not included in this 8th Schedule until the year 1992. The self-respecting Goans united under the banner of Konkani Porjecho Avaz (KPA) led an angry agitation during 1985-'87 demanding 1) Official Language Status to Konkani 2) Statehood to Goa and 3) Inclusion of Konkani in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution. In Feb 1987 the Govt of Goa conceded to the demand following the bloodiest agitation ever seen in Goa. Seven sons of Goa laid became martyrs in the process. Statehood followed soon in May 1987. The 71st Amendment to the Constitution saw the inclusion of Konkani alongwith other deserving candidates, Manipuri and Nepali, in the 8th Schedule. Goans who so far felt underrated and second citizenry in the liberated Goa were overwhelmed by joy. . Thus the fulfillment of the three demands of the self-respecting Goans brought in a sense of elation of their status of citizenship on par with the rest of Indians. Hence 20th August has a very significant importance in the history of Goan culture. Our brethren across the globe joining hands with Goans in Goa in celebrating this day which we celebrate as a celebration of our identity. Incidentally, Goa govt. has declared that the current year will be observed as 'Asmitai Voros' i.e. the Identity Year to mark the 125th Birth Anniversary of the great son of the soil, Shennoi Goembab. Shennoi Goembab who was a great historian, philologist, grammarian and a creative writer was also a scholar par excellence. It was because of his untiring efforts and scholarly inputs that his vision has come true. He was a father of modern literature in Konkani. I make a fervent appeal to all my fellow Goans to spread the message of Shennoi Goembab who held the self-respect above everything else. Goa govt. has annonced that the year will be celebrated as 'Asmitai Voros'. But may the govt do or not, all the organisations in Goa connected with Goa for Goans and Konkani movement are planning to have activities all through the year. If possible Goans abroad too can join us in holding certain activities to inculcate and promote the sense of self-respect among the youth. I take this opportunity to congratulate and extend warm wishes to all the Goans worldwide who are celebrating the day as World Goa Day. And wish you success in this venture. [Goanet] Goa Day commemoration at the Betim Cross......................a part of the WORLD GOAN HERITAGE FESTIVAL.
Goemkars ! Vivian D 'Souza sent me this post from Goa after the Goa Day commemoration today , I d like to share this post with you all. Thanks to Vivian rene Betim Cross - Betim village, Bardez The cross which may be the oldest in Goa, is a stone's throw away from the Betim ferry crossing to Panjim is impressive but severely dilapidated, and will need a great deal of financial support to repair and restore. I commend Heta Pandit's heritage group for taking on this very challenging task, and hope to personally involve myself in suppport of this project. The event this evening which began with a play, partly in mime format by the Mustard Seed Co., was very impressive. The message in the play was meant to awake Goans from their "susegad" lethargy, and to be themselves and to protect what they have. Kudos to the group for a great performance ! Today's event was another successful occasion in the world-wide tapestry of events in celebration of Goa and its heritage. Viva Goa ! Vivian A. D'Souza Vivian has taken pictures this evening at the Betim Cross which the Goa Heritage Group has taken on as a project., these can be viewed at- www.webshots.com > GOANINT > WORLD GOAN HERITAGE celebrations > Betim Cross You can also view the pictures of the WGH events in London at the same address. The World Goa Day celebrations (a short play in English and poetry reading in Konkani) on 18th August 2002 are scheduled to be held at the Betim Cross. [Goanet] Thie Goa, Daman and Diu Day
G O A,D A M A NA N DD I UD A Y Lisbon - Portugal, August 16, 17 and 20 P R O G R A M M E August 16, Friday Traditional Music, Song and Dances of Goa, Daman and Diu at "Teatro da Trindade" with EKVAT, GOA-DAMAN-DIU CHOIR, SURYÁ August 17, Saturday Tour of the city of Lisbon (road names and monuments linked with Goa, Daman and Diu) and Lunch Meeting of Youth and Carrom Tournament August 20, Tuesday Talks on "Perceptions of Goa" with Oscar Mascarenhas, José Eduardo Agualusa, Catarina Portas and Paulo Varela Gomes Closing Dinner at Goan Restaurant THE GOA DAY IN PORTUGAL (2001 and 2002) It was in 2001 that the wish to commemorate the Goa Day in Portugal was materialised. And it was not by chance that the idea came from a "cyber space", namely the discussion forum of the Supergoa.com page. It was through Internet that knowledge was received of these commemorations in the rest of the world. A small group of Supergoa forists - Portuguese of Goan and European descent - decided to act, organising within a couple of weeks the commemorations in Portugal with a lunch and meeting in Lisbon on sunday August 19, 2001. The idea, pushed forward by Eng. Hernani Mourão and Dr. Francisco Monteiro (two assiduous collaborators of Supergoa.com), was disseminated through Internet and through Goan restaurants of Lisbon, as well as through the media. Though forecasts were bad - August is a month of annual vacations -, the results were excellent. With the presence of around a hundred persons, one socialised and talked about the Goan identity, with the participation of youth and of adults, Goans and other Portuguese, in a discussion that, mingled with much music and songs, lasted till late evening (for more information on the 2001 Lisbon celebrations please log on to http://www.supergoa.com/goaday/2001/lisboa.html). In the face of the vast coverage by the social communication media (LUSA news agency, the dailies "A Capital", "Correio da Manhã" and "Público", RTP Internacional ["Sinais" programme] and Macao's "Jornal Lusófono", among others), it was decided to extend the commemorations in Portugal giving them the practical effect which is envisaged throughout the world: to strengthen the community spirit. In this country, the first step would necessarily be to create a platform of understanding among the six associations related to Goa, Daman and Diu. This objective led to the set-up of an Organising Committee with representatives of all the associations and a common work developed along periodical meetings. The immediate outcome of this cooperation - besides a first proof that a spirit of cooperation and understanding in specific circumstances is possible - is the Goa, Daman and Diu Day which congregates all the Goans, Damanese and Diuese as well as many other Portuguese nationals who for diverse reasons have a special link to those territories. This Goa, Daman and Diu Day will certainly mark one of the biggest commemorations of the World Goa Day throughout the Earth, as has already been asserted by Rene Barreto who initiated this idea. And it is not a chance thing. Although somewhat closed within themselves in the past, the Goan, Damanese and Diuese communities of Portugal are now opening to the world and showing that they are among the most active ones as regards the preservation of their unique identities, being at the same time perfectly integrated in the host country. Thus, this second commemoration of World Goa Day in Portugal mirrors not only the need for a more careful look at what goes on in Goa, Daman and Diu but also the importance that these diaspora communities and all friends of and others interested in these territories can have for a healthy and integrated development of Goa, Daman and Diu. [Goanet] WORLD GOAN HERITAGE celebrations
- Original Message - From: "Joe Pereira" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, August 14, 2002 1:36 AM WORLD GOAN HERITAGE celebrations Hi Rene It is indeed a great pleasure for me to see the growing solidarity amongst Goans the world over. Seeing buds of unity sprouting in different parts of the world in a community that otherwise seems to be leaning more towards individualism, is indeed encouraging and promising to us all. Over the years we have, and probably will continue to encounter numerous challenges that threaten the very ideals of unity, and fellowship. However, it is through forums like this and the vision it carries, that the positives will far outweigh the negatives. Rene, I wish to commend you for your persistence and being in the forefront in promoting Goan unity. Well done! We in Tanzania are celebrating the 110th anniversary of the Goan community in the country today, 14th August 2002. Holy Mass is being celebrated at the St Joseph's Cathedral, the church that goes back in to a long history of links with the community. While we also wish one another Happy Anniversary, I wish to congratulate all Goans the world over on the Goa Heritage Day. [Goanet] Goa Heritage Day was very aptly kicked-off in Goa ............
Vivian D'Souza [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tuesday, August 13, 2002 Goa Day kick-off ! Vivian D Souza in Goa Goa Heritage Day was very aptly kicked-off in Goa with a very enjoyable performance by the Goa State String Orchestra at the Kala Academy Auditorium in Panjim. The Guest of Honour was Mr. Pratap Singh Rane, the former Chief Minister, and Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly, and currently leader of the Opposition Congress Party. The orchestra comprising of about 20 young musicians was brilliantly led by Conductor and Baso Continuo Nigel Dixon. Selections were played from famous composers such as Johann Pachebel, Antonio Vivaldi, Edward Elger, Johann Sebastian Bach and W.A. Mozart. The audience showed their appreciation with their thunderous applause at the end of each selection. It was a very memorable event, an inaugural performance for this young and very talented group, which desrves the financial support of the Goan diaspora to nurture and preserve this very important part of Goa's cultural heritage. Hats off to Nigel Dixon for singlehandedly putting together this group of talented musicians. Surely a labour of love for music brought to fruition. Best wishes to all the Goan Heritage Day events being held all over the World, from a Goa cloaked in green splendour by the monsoon rains. Vivian A. [Goanet] WORLD GOAN HERITAGE celebrations -London .........KONKANI VARIETY SHOW - 11 Aug 02
11 Aug 02 KONKANI VARIETY SHOW by Eddie D Sa. This show by the Goan Cultural Sociey was part of the Goa Day celebrations and thoroughly enjoyable. The venue was the Merton Hall in South Wimbledon. Instead of the usual monotonous rows of chairs, the organisers had opted for a 'table system' (as Larryboy put it) - two parallel rows of long tables, positioned at an angle with chairs facing the stage. A thoughtful addition was a bowl of Indian savouries on each table. Instead of a distracting live band by the stage, the music was pre-recorded and a couple of audio experts were at the controls. For a mere 5 pounds, we were treated to a full 4-hour programme of entertainment - some 25 items of song, two mini plays, poetry to start off the show and a violin solo. The plays were in the form of skits on traditional Goan customs - one about the old days and the other about their equivalent today. The scenes must have brought back memories to the older members of the audience. Items followed each other in quick succession with no awkward pauses between. No long introductions or tedious speeches either. The highlight of the occasion was clearly the contribution of several children, aged 5 or 6 to the teens. The children probably speak no more than a smattering of Konkani, if at all, so it was amazing that they were tutored so quickly. Each of them later received an attractive trophy - it should serve to encourage other children to take part. The prizes were presented by Rene Baretto and Norma Menezes, coordinators of Goa Day. Rene's presence was no doubt a boost to the occasion. No tedious queuing for food. Helpers brought it to the table as you sat. There were two servings - a plateful of assorted snacks before the interval and a more traditional meal later in the programme. The service was clean, efficient and unobtrusive. Even the good quality red serviettes were worthy of notice. There was a drinks counter at the rear of the hall - with a friendly service and low costs. A glass of soft drinks was a mere 20 pence! There were songs to suit all tastes. I barely know any of the actors/singers by name but the performances of Larryboy, A Perry, Rosy D'Silva and Ida DeSousa (taken from the programme) come to mind. Among the young, the youth leader Melissa Fernandes deserves special mention - she has the charm, grace and confidence and should be a fine role model for the young. In sum, my hearty congrats to Gregg and his team for putting up such a splendid show. It was organised with professional flair and I couldn't detect any flaws. The GCS is a young group and I am sure we can look forward to even more delightful shows in the future. Curb religious structures along road: Mathany Heraldo on Line PANJIM, AUG 8 - Cortalim MLA Mathany Saldanha has appealed to the Town and Country Planning minister to curb the construction of religious structures along the roads. "The more religious we are, the more corrupt we become," he claimed, while speaking during the debate for grants to the Town and Country Planning Department, in the legislative assembly today. He also urged, that the government should plan roads for the future, instead of indulging in haphazard development. [Goanet] Goans of Portugal - celebrating WORLD GOA DAY 1 / 2
Friends , . I commend Constantino Xavier - for bringing ALL the Goan Organizations in Portugal TOGETHER ...to celebrate WORLD GOA DAY . I am also Proud to note that World Goa Day in Lisbon is being recognised and sponsored by MUNICIPAL CORPORATION OF LISBON Department of Support to Institutional Management and Activity. As such , I believe this means that WORLD GOA DAY in Portugal is on the Official list of Diary of events of celebratons in Portugal ( or Lisbon ).I am also glad that Goan Youth have taken the opportunity of organising an event for themselves , thus making sure that they wre not leftout. I congratulate The Goans of Portugal for their Solidarity , for their cooperation in bringing together such a splendid Show and for their UNITY even if it is JUST for One DAY ! It is a begining.and i am sure there will be more to come. I am sure many of us Goans would love to be a part of Portuguese Goan Community and also proud to be so. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Jorge de Abreu Noronha for his contributions I am sure many of you will join me in wishing the Goans of Portugal all the SUCCESS. Goans of Portugal , you have made us PROUD ! thank you. rene barreto WORLD GOA DAY --- The following Post is being made in two sections - -1 / 2 Goa, Daman and Diu Day 2002 Goa, Daman and Diu Day 2002 follows the successfull commemorations of Goa Day, in Portugal, last year. On the 19th of August 2001, some 100 people got together in a Lisbon restaurant, after I got in contact with Rene Barreto through the Internet and started to put up the idea of celebrating this event also here in Portugal. Widely covered by the media (in national newspapers, Internet and even in Goa, by the RTP Internacional), I proposed to all Goan associations in Portugal we should from a joint committe, in order to celebrate 2002 World Goa Day in cooperation and in harmony, ignoring all rivalties and fights. Since November 2001 I have been meeting up with representants of all associations linked to Goa, Daman and Diu, working out this year programme, and executing decisions taken in our meetings, in parallel to my university life. Since there is a big community of people hailing from Daman and Diu, and also an association from Daman and Diu is represented in the committee, it was decided to rename World Goa Day, especifically in Portugal, as "Goa, Daman and Diu Day". Following the appeals for unity, solidarity and cooperation between Goans, we are giving an example in two different ways: Besides showing the world that Goans in Portugal are well active and working hard in order to keep their identity alive, this event - so I hope - will also show Goans, wherever they are, that unity is not only very necessary, but also very possible and fruitful for Goans abroad and also Goans in Goa. Hernâni Mourão (co-founder of the commemorations) G O A D A Y I NP O R T U G A L Integrated in the commemorations of World Goa Day which are held every year on August 20 around the world, the Goa, Daman and Diu Day celebrates for the second consecutive time in Portugal the date on which Konkani, the language of Goa, became an official and autonomous language in India. Goa, a Portuguese colony in India from 1510 to 1961, reflects in its identity a perfect symbiosis between the lifestyles and cultures of the East and West, particularly the Indian and Portuguese ones. An outcome of the strong links between these two territories, several tens of thosands of Goans, Damanese and Diuese live today in Portugal. The objective of joining together all the Indo-Portuguese associations existing in Portugal is to congregate the Indo-Portuguese spirit and to strengthen the identity of Goa, Daman and Diu besides making known to the host country the rich cultural identity of these territories. Thus, in the year 2001 commemorative events of World Goa Day were held in various countries like, for example, Portugal, the United States of America, Canada, England, Tanzania, Bahrain, Kuwait, Pakistan, India, Australia, New Zealand. [Goanet] GOA celebrates ........WORLD GOAN HERITAGE DAY on The 18th August 2002.
WORLD GOAN HERITAGE DAY . GOA - 18th August 2002. GOA HERITAGE ACTION GROUP invites you to join us at the Betim Cross on Sunday 18th August, 2002 at 6 p.m. to celebrate World Goan Heritage Day. Celebrations begin with a short play by the Mustard Seed Art Company, a theatre group with Art as its middle name. The Company has performed plays by writers, adapted film scripts or poems and has done mime shows and musicals. The Company is made up of part-time theatre professionals and is directed by Ms. Isabel St. Rita Vaz. The short play scheduled for the 18th revolves around a Goan and his love for the land. There will be a coffee-break at the end of the Company's performance and at 6.45 p.m. a reading of poems in Konkani by three Goan poets who call themselves TRIVENI. This confluence of three rivers is made up of Mrs. Nutan Arun Sakhardande whose first anthology of poems "Kasturi" was published in 1995. Ms. Sakhardande has had her poems translated in several major languages of the country. She is an activist and an active participant of the Konkani movement. Ms. Maya Anil Kharangate, the other river in TRIVENI had her book of poems published in 1989. Her poems "Koledadachi palkhi", "Galivarachi bhovandi", a translation and "Chitrabodh" and "Chowful" have been aired on All India Radio and Doordarshan television. Ms. Nayana Adarkar is as well known as the author of three books for young readers as for her book of poems "Pratima". Ms. Adarkar is admired in literary circles outside Goa for her sharp and incisive poem on the impersonality of the apartment block. The celebrations are being held with the Betim Cross as a backdrop as it was considered the most appropriate venue to reiterate our commitment to preserving Goa's priceless heritage. The celebrations are also expected to highlight the plight of this monument that is in urgent need of restoration. Ketak Nachinolkar, a graduate of the Goa College of Architecture with a post graduate degree in conservation from the Delhi School of Planning and Architecture has been appointed by the Group to carry out the restoration work of this exquisite piece of heritage. Local residents and well wishers of the Cross have generously donated a seed fund to start the restoration. Additional funds are however urgently needed to complete the task the Group has undertaken for which the Group is working. [Goanet] PRESERVING GOA
BRIEF REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES OF GOA HERITAGE ACTION GROUP, 29/30 GREENVALLEY, KAMT COMPLEX PHASE I, ALTO PORVORIM, GOA 4th October 2001- 4th July 2002 1. The Group organized and held the first Goa Heritage Festival at the Goa Kala Academy, Goa on 26-27th November 2001. The Festival aimed at generating better awareness on Goa's priceless man-made and natural heritage was a success and was reported in several local and national newspapers and T.V. channels. Academic sessions with lectures on heritage conservation, culture, medicinal plants, cuisine and history were held at the Black Box, Goa Kala Academy, Panaji. Demonstration of architectural crafts by traditional Goan craftspeople were held in the Courtyard, Goa Kala Academy, Panaji. Exhibitions on heritage conservation case studies, folklore, folk crafts and arts were held in the Art Gallery, Goa Kala Academy. A Souvenir publication containing articles of academic and popular interest was made available at the Art Gallery, Goa Kala Academy free of cost. The Souvenir carries a directory of artisans and craftsmen of Goa and makes a fine reference for both academicians and homeowners. Authentic folk performances by two well-known Goan folk dance troupes were held at the Open Air Auditorium, Goa Kala Academy, Panaji. These performances were preceded by a short description of the social and cultural relevance of the performance, its original backdrop in the Goan village and a brief essay on the traditional musical instruments in use. 2. Three members of the Group were invited to join a Government Committee appointed to select heritage homes that had tourism potential. The members made site visits, carried out research on the homes and drafted a scheme and recommendations for the scheme for the Tourism Department, Government of Goa. 3. The Writ Petition filed in the High Court of Bombay at Panaji was admitted in February 2002. The case concerns the proposed high rise complex at the foot of Pe. Agnelo Road, Altinho and the demolition of four villas that form part of a Conservation Zone as earmarked in the Outline Development Plan, 2000. 4. At the behest of the homeowner, the Group was involved in seeking protection for a house in Chinchinim, South Goa. The case involved the imminent demolition of a sit-out dated 1783 for a public road. The Group chose to initiate a dialogue with all government officials concerned in a non-confrontational strategy. The strategy, however, did not succeed for reasons outside the Group's control. 5. In February 2002, the Group decided to initiate action to protect and preserve the commemorative pillar at Tonca, Caranzalem. The Goa School of Architecture was approached with a request to help the Group with technical drawings, etc. Prof. Jaimini Mehta, Principal of the School was most co-operative on the matter. 6. The Group has also decided to help restore the 16th century Cross located on the Mandovi river at Betim village, Bardez. To achieve this, the Group has started a fund-raising drive and offered technical assistance. The World Goa Day celebrations (a short play in English and poetry reading in Konkani) on 18th August 2002 are scheduled to be held at the Betim Cross. 7. A Festival of the Arts has been planned for January-February 2003 in the heritage precinct of Fontainhas, Panaji. A technical team has been appointed to conduct a ground survey, do a series of drawings and approach private houses that will be opened as temporary art galleries for 2 weeks during the festival of the arts. An advisory cell, chaired by Mr. Pratapsinhjirao Rane and comprising Mr. Bal Mundkur, Mr. Ralph DeSouza, Mr. Christopher Heredia, Mr. Srinivas Dempo as members and Delegate, Fundação Oriénte as observer was formed. Fundação Oriénte is examining the possibility of holding an art competition at an All-India level during the festival in collaboration with the Group. Artists and craftspeople from all over the country are expected to participate in the festival. Visitors from all over the world are expected to visit the festival. The Fontainhas Festival of the Arts has been so designed as to fit into a larger plan for the revitalization of the heritage precinct. 8. The Goa Heritage Festival has been scheduled for 25-26-27th November 2002 on the same lines as the Festival in 2001 the only difference this year being that there will be a Dress Parade on 25th November 2002. The Traditional Dress Parade will start at the Secretariat, Panaji and go through Panaji's Art Deco buildings turn at Massano d'Amorim heritage buildings and end at Panaji Municipal Gardens. The Parade will showcase traditional Goan and Indian costumes at their best. This promises to be a colourful kaleidoscope of Goa's cosmopolitan identity. Heta Pandit General Sec. [Goanet] The WORLD GOAN HERITAGE DAY being celebrated in GOA - Cont - 2/ 2
Cont/ 1 GOA STATE STRING ORCHESTRA April 1st 2002 was an auspicious day in the history of western classical music in Goa. With active support and encouragement from Kala Academy, the dream of a professional string orchestra was finally realised. Formed with the participation of the state's most experienced string players together with the most talented of Goa's youth , rehearsals are already under way for the orchestra's inaugural concert - an event which promises to be the most exciting western classical music occasion in Goa for many years. Goa has a long tradition of western classical music which is unique in India. However this rich heritage is under a greater threat today than ever before in this tiny state's history. Goa's cultural landscape is being subjected to nothing less than a tidal wave of western commercial pop culture. The electronic media and satellite television in particular beams in a never ending diet of pop music backed up by a multi-million dollar commercial entertainment industry targeted at today's youth. However there is a growing groundswell of opinion that is increasingly making itself heard which feels that action must be taken to redress the balance. Any civilized society ignores at its peril its cultural heritage, a heritage that must be nurtured and handed on to future generations. The formation of the Goa State String Orchestra is a significant contribution to this fight back. Currently few opportunities exist for the talented young musician who has acquired the technical proficiency of his or her western counterpart; the formation of this orchestra will provide a much needed stepping stone for such musicians and a valuable focus for the western musical education which still exists. Once again Goan audiences and students of music will have the unique opportunity of experiencing live performances by their own artists of the finest music composed by western classical composers: immortal masterpieces such as Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons', Pachabel's Canon, Mozart's 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik' and many, many more. It is intended that this orchestra will become a cultural flagship for Goa, both throughout India and, ultimately, abroad also. I am delighted to be involved with such an exciting project and will strive to my utmost to provide Goa with an orchestra in which it can be justifiably proud. In 1978 he formed his own baroque ensemble "Concordia" with whom he toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe. As a solo performing artist he has performed in many of the leading concert venues of the world including The Royal Festival Hall, London, The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam, The Musikverein, Vienna, Alice Tully Hall, New York, Teatro Real, Madrid and The Sydney Opera House. In 1986 he was invited to give a solo recital at Handel's birthplace, Halle in what was then East Germany. In addition to the above Nigel has also toured extensively with the British Council including engagements in South America, Iran, Malaysia and it was with the British Council that he first visited India in 1978. [Goanet] WORLD GOA DAY:
- Original Message - From: Tony Correia-Afonso To: rene barreto Sent: Saturday, July 27, 2002 10:30 PM Subject: Re: GOAN HERIATAGE DAY WORLD GOA DAY: On the occasion of World Goa Day, which this year is being celebrated as WORLD GOAN HERITAGE DAY, I extend to all fellow-Goans wherever they may be in the four corners of the world, fraternal greetings and best wishes for the success of the many functions that are being organised all over the world to mark this unique event. I take this opportunity to congratulate Rene Barreto in particular for conceiving the idea and all the others involved in promoting it among the Goan community at large. As many may be aware, "Goan Cultural Heritage" was the theme of last year's International Goan Convention of the World Wide Goans, of which I had the honour and privilege of being the President. Whatever may be our differences on various issues affecting our homeland, there is no doubt that the common cultural heritage that we all share provides a strong bond which unites us all. If we do not strive to preserve this heritage and let it slide slide ino oblivion, we will lose our identity as Goans. On this occasion, therefore, let us all resolve to make the necessary effort to maintain and promote our great heritage! --- Tony Correia-Afonso =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-W-E-B---S-I-T-E-=-=-= To Subscribe/Unsubscribe from GoaNet | http://www.goacom.com/goanet === For (un)subscribing or for help, Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dont want so many e=mails? [Goanet] Goan Cultural Society production of CHUKH ................
Goan Cultural Society production of" CHUKH " London UK Goan Cultural Society production of " CHUKH " London UK It was indeed a great pleasure to have attended a Teatr in North London UK at the special invitation of GCS Committee members a few weeks ago. The show was the Goan Cultural Society production of CHUKH , which was written and directed by Mike Alfonso. The show was well attended, the hall was nearly full to its capacity, and surprisingly there were a few young faces amongst the middle aged crowd. This gave the organizers and the Actors the encouragement that all their efforts were not going in vain. The story "CHUKH" is set in UK with one scene explaining how it all started in Goa. The story was effective and had its share of twists. The audience enjoyed every moment of the 4 hour show. The laughter throughout the show made one feel that those who attended were well versed with Konkani , although for sure one was aware that some made every effort to understand the show. The most ambitious part of the show was the participation of the very young , ages ranging from 3 to 16 years, many of the young actors did not speak Konkani but sang the songs in a very convincing manner. I was also given to understand that these youngsters were making every effort to learn Konkani , they did so by attending Konkani classes every week A problem has now arisen - The parents who would usually speak in konkani - so that the youngsters would not understand what they spoke about them - can no longer do so. The backdrops were beautifully set, giving the atmosphere of a Goan setting , the accompanied music was superbly sequenced. The singers including the youngsters beautifully blended their songs with the music. The acting was superb, the singers sang well and they surpassed the expectations of the audience. I would like to take this opportunity of congratulating the Goan Cultural Society UK for the wonderful work they do, to preserve the Goan heritage , more so in a place like London. I am sure you will hear more about their work in the near future. I believe that a video is being edited and should be available in a short while , those wishing to obtain a copy should contact the Committee at the e-mail address mentioned here below. Please do take time to write and encourage them to continue their good work. thank you. rene barreto GOAN CULTURAL SOCIETY - UK www.goanculturalsociety.com WORLD GOA DAY UK www.goadayuk.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-W-E-B---S-I-T-E-=-=-= To Subscribe/Unsubscribe from GoaNet | http://www.goacom.com/goanet === For (un)subscribing or for help, Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dont want so many e=mails? [Goanet] Fire engulfs IOC petrol pipeline; one arrested
Fire engulfs IOC petrol pipeline; one arrested >From Our Margao Bureau MARGAO, July 12: Panic gripped Vasco residents as the entire city smelt of petrol fumes when leakage in the Indian Oil Corporation's (IOC) petrol pipeline used to download fuel from the ship burst at three different places and caught fire. However, prompt action by the fire and emergency service personnel averted a major fire mishap by extinguishing the fire within three hours. Blasts and fire was reported at three points - berth number 11, gate number 9 and old power house, close to the tanks. Prime facie police have established pilferage as the reason behind the incident. The investigations have unearthed a 200 metre long 2.5 inches diameter PVC pipe that was used to steal petrol from the main pipe. Vasco police have arrested 45-year-old Loginho Joseph Fernandes, residing near Cine El-Monte adjacent to the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) compound. The pipeline that unloads petrol from vessel into the tanks runs through MPT property and guarded by central industrial security force (CISF) personnel. "Conspiracy and connivance of some of the concerned authorities cannot be ruled out," stated superintendent of police (South), Mr I D Shukla. The petrol fumes were reportedly coming out from the pipeline since 11.30 p.m on Thursday night. Unknown caller had alarmed police control room over the possibility of leakage at 12 mid-night. "I received a message from the control room at midnight while I was coming back to Vasco from Margao. To cross check the fact, I went to IOC gate where I was told by the supervisor that there is minor leakage and water is being flushed to control it," stated deputy superintendent of police, Mr Vishram Borkar. The actual problem started only at 2.30 a.m., when smell became more strong when fire stations at Vasco and MPT were called. "We checked thoroughly but nothing was found," stated a fire department official. At the dusk, the problem became more serious. Fire brigade personnel were summoned again. First blast was witnessed at gate number 9 where CISF persons are on guard at 7.30 a.m., followed by a blast and fire at old power station at 8.45 a.m. and another blast at berth number 11 at 9.30 a.m. Fire service personnel led by district incharge, Mr N S Nasnodkar and MPT station in-charge Mr Laxmikant Kenawadekar begun the fire control operation. The fire was controlled within three hours. Director of fire and emergency services, Dr P K John and divisional fire officer, Mr Ashok Menon also rushed to the site. Police suspect a racket to pilfer petrol from the pipeline. A 200 metres long pipeline was fitted to the main pipe near old power house point in the bushes. A valve was used to fit the 2.5 inches PVC pipe to the MS pipeline to steal the petrol. The pipe was laid beneath the main road - leading to MPT gate number 9 - and railway tracks. Outlet of the pipe was found opposite Cine El Monte where it was duly covered by plastic bag. Police have also found that the electric wires were lying open near the pipeline. SP Shukla contended that these wires may be a reason for the fire as petrol was leaking near the wires. Acting swiftly, police raided a house near cine El Monte wherein they found 8 cans of petrol and gauging instruments. One Longinho Fernandes was arrested under section 285 for storing petrol illegally. In the entire episode, police have registered offence under section 379 (theft), 336 (causing injuries), 435 and 436 ( arsoning), 307 (endangering human life) and 120 (B) (Conspiracy) against unknown person. Complaint is filed by police inspector, Mr Serafin Dias and PSI Fransic Corte is investigating into the matter. "We are interrogating IOC, CISF and MPT officials," stated Mr Shukla. Police are investigating into the possibility of connivance of the officials into the petrol pilferage, he added. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-W-E-B---S-I-T-E-=-=-= To Subscribe/Unsubscribe from GoaNet | http://www.goacom.com/goanet === For (un)subscribing or for help, Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dont want so many e=mails? [Goanet] As part of the celebrations for World Goa Day - world wide
Goemkars where ever you may be ! As part of the celebrations for World Goa Day, Cheryl Braganza has dedicate her new exhibition entitled BREAKING THE SILENCE (Montreal - from July 4 to July 30, 2002) to Goans all over the world. Here is a report from The Chronicle. Cheryl will be in the New York area this weekend . EYES EXPRESS WOMEN'S PAIN Artist Cheryl Braganza exhibits her work at Kirkland Library this month BY SCOTT TAYLOR The Chronicle The women stare back at you, some directly, others off into a distance only they can see. There is tragedy in their eyes, but also hope, determination and love. They come to life from the imagination of Kirkland artist Cheryl Braganza, and they're not easily forgotten. Chronicle, Peter McCabe Cheryl Braganza works on a new painting in her Kirkland home last Friday afternoon. Braganza, who is showing her works at Kirkland Library until July 30, said the inspiration she gets comes from what she feels when she sees the pain of others. It all started with me feeling guilty over what the Afghan women were going through. It meant that they had to go to war in order for me to find out what was going on. And that distressed me a lot, so I started finding out about the women in Afghanistan and the women in India - my own culture - thoughts I had sort of pushed aside after having come to Canada. I had to express myself, and the only way I can express myself is through my painting." Many of her paintings, brilliant with colours that convey the feelings of the artist, were born from events of the last few years, including the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. "I painted all these," she said, "just from reading the newspapers and listening to the news. And I feel that women's voices have not been heard enough and if I can make them heard through my art, at least I'm doing something positive." Born in Bombay, India, Braganza studied art in Rome and England before arriving in Canada and settling in Kirkland. A true world traveller, she wears her emotions on her sleeve - or at least on her canvas. "The idea of this show is to open eyes as this has all opened my eyes. I hope that it raises people's consciousness and, finally, that it leads somewhere for me." Braganza admitted there is someone in Goa, India, who is building a five-star hotel and wishes to display a painting or two in the lobby. "That's pretty exciting, so we'll see what happens." Kirkland Library director Evlyn Payton-Tayler said such exhibits are a regular occurrence at the facility. "We provide space for artists on a monthly basis, but they do have to show a certain level of competence. Cheryl's art certainly qualifies." Aside from the hours standing at the canvas, she is an artistic force behind the fundraising of the West Island Palliative Care Residence. She is donating one of her original paintings, as well as acting as the beacon for other artists to become involved. "It started by accident," she said. "I phoned (executive director) Teresa (Dellar) and offered to donate a painting and we got to talking and I wondered what else I could do to help. Now I have 50 paintings from artists to auction off. And there will be 50 more coming." The library is located at 17100 Hymus Blvd. The exhibit can be viewed during regular opening hours. [Goanet] Mini Goan World Cup
Friends , It gives me great pleasure in sharing with you a message I have recieved from Raul Fernandes from Dubai , If after reading this post you feel you need to write to make further enquiries , please do not hesitate to contact Mr.Raul Fernandes at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Please do share your thoughts on the various forums you belong to and I will be happy to pass your comments to Raul too. thanks rene barreto MAKING it HAPPEN ! Our company Gulf International Promotions (for sports and Entertainment) is based in Dubai. We specialize in organizing various sports and entertainment events. Our major projects are held during the Dubai Shopping Festival where thousands of sportsmen and sportswomen take part in various sports activities. We also organize international events and have the honour of being the first organizers to bring a Goan football team to Dubai to play in a tournament that consisted of Al Wasl Club of Dubai, Kerala Police of Kerala, Old Bens Club of Sri Lanka and Churchill Brothers of Goa. The tournament was a large success with Al Wasl defeating Churchill Brothers in the final. In the year 2000 we sponsored the UAE Goan team that participated in the Mini Goan World Cup held in Margao and Duler in Goa, India. We were unlucky to loose in the final to the Hosts Goa on penalty kicks. The Tournament was organized by a body called Goans International and was scheduled to be held every two years. We have not as yet heard of the tournament to be held and have been given to understand that the organizing body does not exist as a body any more. This is unfortunate but things such as these do happen. We at Gulf International Promotions would like to revive the tournament and are planning to organize it here in Dubai in March 2003. This will however depend on the response we get from teams. We on our part will arrange for visas to Dubai for players and families, we will make special arrangements for subsidized hotel stay with meals, transport from airport to hotel and ground and will negotiate with the airlines for special deals on airfares. We should be grateful to receive your feedback and to know whether teams would be interested in taking part. It would be useful to have a coordinator from each country to liaise for the team/s that wish to participate. We would like teams from all over the world to participate. Dubai is a beautiful place to visit and the weather is great in March. Moreover it will be a good opportunity for Goans from all over the world to meet and exchange views. Who knows maybe a Goan convention can be held in this beautiful Oasis? You may log on to www.justclickdubai.com to get further information on Dubai. We should be grateful if teams would kindly send us tentative replies as soon as possible to enable us to decide whether the tournament is feasible or not. If it is, we will have to get the ball rolling immediately as we will need all the time we can get to have a great tournament. We look forward to your replies and any suggestions, ideas, will be more than welcome. We sincerely hope teams will be able to participate and help to keep up the great Goan (sporting) name. [Goanet] Marathi Has No Case In Goa
Marathi Has No Case In Goa By CHANDRAKANT KENI hysteric outburst of Gomantak Marathi Academy and some others, who call themselves protagonists of Marathi language, over the announcement of Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar on 125th birth anniversary of late Vaman Raghunath Varde Valaulikar alias Shenoy Goembab, is both irrelevant and untenable. The Chief Minister announced his Government's decision to celebrate on state level the birth anniversary of the great Goan, who apart from being a doyen of modern Konkani literature, was a great champion of the struggle to restore the lost Goan identity and the honour of the people of Goa. In fact, Konkani, which has been recognised by the Constitution of India and National Academy of Letters, owes much to the efforts of late Shenoy Goembab for the yeomen services he rendered for the cause of Konkani language and Goan identity. But the Chief Minister gave more importance to take the message of Goan identity to the nook and corner of Goa. There was nothing in his speech, which could be termed as discriminatory or controversial. Yet protagonists of Marathi, bent upon to revive the language controversy, conveniently twisted Chief Minister's statement to justify biased or provocative reaction. As a matter of fact, the Chief Minister reiterated what he had earlier stated in the Assembly, while delivering his budget speech. [Goanet] WORLD GOA DAY 2002
Permit me to share a beautiful message from Cheryl Braganza, Artist, Montreal , Quebec, Canada As part of the celebrations for World Goa Day, I would like to dedicate my new exhibition entitled BREAKING THE SILENCE (Montreal - from July 4 to July 30, 2002) to Goans all over the world. While we should never deny our sense of pride in being Goan, let us not be confined by our culture but add to it, break the barriers and expand the definition of creativity by noting what occurs between our inner world and our outer world. We can do this through art that inspires, through the written word, through the haunting sounds of music, through personal involvement - so that all of us can act as creators and address the richness, the wonder, the sacredness and the crisis of today's world. As an artist, I do not want to respond to the jingle of public demands, but rather to passionately feel for what is lacking and bring something new to the table every day. I will strive to do this for the rest of my life. Please visit my website at: www.picturetrail.com/cherylbraganza and let us celebrate our precious heritage collectively Cheryl Braganza, * Please join me in wishing Cherryl Braganza all the best in her exhibition and also in thanking her for her message to the Goans world wide. rene =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-W-E-B---S-I-T-E-=-=-= To Subscribe/Unsubscribe from GoaNet | http://www.goacom.com/goanet === For (un)subscribing or for help, Contact: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dont want so many e=mails? [Goanet] Konkani Bhasha Mandal is proud of all Goan artistes
Navhind Times on Line Margao Bureau KBM lauds decision to observe Goembab's birth anniversary MARGAO, June 27: The Konkani Bhasha Mandal (KBM) president, Prof Shyam Verenkar, has congratulated the state government and the Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, for their decision to observe Shenoi Goembab's 125th birth anniversary year as Asmitai year all over the state. "Shenoi Goembab was a visionary who instilled a sense of self respect among the Goans by revealing to them, through research, their rich cultural heritage and the distinct identity," says a press note released here. Prof Verenkar expressed his displeasure over the reaction by Marathi protagonists, which he dubbed as an attempt to give wishful twist to the Chief Minister's statement. "Goan identity cannot be divided as Marathi Asmitai and Konkani Asmitai," advocated Prof Verenkar adding Goans have always loved and served other languages like Marathi, Hindi, English and Portuguese. "Konkani Bhasha Mandal is proud of all Goan artistes, even Marathi writers who have excelled in their respective fields," said KBM chief. He said poet B B Borkar's or story teller Laxmanrao Sardesai's love for Marathi never came in the way of their regard towards mother tongue, Konkani. KBM has appealed to the Marathi lovers to give up their designs of dividing the people through misinformation campaign. "We wish that all Marathi lovers too participate in the Shenoi Goembab's anniversary celebrations and spread the message of holding Goan identity in high esteem," the press note added. [Goanet] the Konkani heritage centre
Konkani on the verge of extinction: Ozario DUBAI, June 26 (UNI): Despite having survived 6,000 years of turbulent history, migration and political and cultural oppression, Konkani is facing threats of extinction, according to an Indian Konkani cultural organisation. A majority of the about 5.5 million Konkanis in India and abroad are totally oblivious of this threat, Mr Eric Ozario, president of the 15-year-old Maandd Sobhann organisation, which is striving for the preservation of the unique Konkani culture and language, told Muscat's Times of Oman. "Konkani is not being taught in schools, except in Goa. Many have discarded it for English, Hindi or Kannada and today the fear of extinction of the language is so real that we have to sound the alarm to all the Konkanis in the world," he said. It is high time that Konkanis stopped aping the West and got down to preserving their culture and language, which was giving them their own unique identity, he exhorted fellow Konkanis during a visit to Oman. Mr Ozario is here as part of the organisation's Kalangaan Abhyaan, a stage show for the cause of the Kalaangaan - the Konkani heritage centre - that is being built in Mangalore. The centre, the first phase of which is completed, already has five fully functioning facilities. The second phase would include a research and documentation centre, a hostel block, guest block, administration block and a recording studio. Mr Ozario said Rs 1.5 crore was required to complete the project. Of this, Rs 21 lakh was needed urgently, he added. Accompanied by Messrs Arun Raj Rodrigues and Stany Alvares of the organisation, Mr Ozario is touring the Gulf countries to raise funds. They have already covered Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates. [Goanet] WORLD GOA DAY 2002
WORLD GOA 2002 MESSAG from GoaNow - in Goa by Joel D Sousa in support of WORLD GOA DAY 2002 Hi Rene, We at GoaNOW wish you all success and happiness on GOA DAY. One feels great to feel that NRI Goans feel so proud to be Goans and to celebrate that great feeling wholeheartedly while they live abroad. We would, however, wish that they could, some day or other, sooner or later, display this warm feeling in the land of their ancestors--Goa. Of course, it would take some effort and sacrifice, which, however, would be really worth considering the NRIs' limitless love for Maimdes Goa. Moreover, those of us, left here in the eastern paradise or vale of tears, for one reason or other, would also feel inspired by knowing that her sons and daughters overseas care so much for Goa. Cheers. Joel. 00 and WORLD GOA DAY 2002 The World Goa Day 2002 will be celebrated throughout the Goan world on 17th and 18th of August. This is the third year in row of this speical Goan event that was initiated by the UK based Rene Barreto in the year 2000. It was to commemorate the entry of the Konkani language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution, which had taken place on 20 August 1992. It is a day of Goan solidarity the world over. Each community in the country of its residence celebrates the day with socio-cultural events ...singing always its anthem PROUD TO BE A GOAN. Last year it was celebrated in U.K., Portugal. Pakistan, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Kenya, Australia, Goa. This year will join Mumbai, under the umbrella of GRAF (Goan Review Art Foundation) The appeal to organise this feast is directed to the leaders of the Goan Associations, but in the absence of an Association, any individual can organise it with just few Goan friends meeting somewhere and toasting to the World Goa Day -the link of the Konkani Movement overseas. It is a day to talk to your children of the Konkani language, of its distinct identity among Indian language. that it is the only Indian language even today written in the Roman script, and it has a lovely magazine like Goan Review, among others. It is a day to talk about Goa in terms of it being our dear Motherland, no matter where we were born. It is like a national day like St. Patrick's Day is to the Irish. It is a day to teach your children the song PROUD TO BE A GOAN, to instill in them the pride of being a Goan. It has been propagated far and wide through the internet and the many E-forums. Let Mumbai-ites resound it this year with great pomp as only Mumbai Goans know. [Goanet] Indian Football Coach ..........
India s New Football Coach. by Rene Barreto, the Coordinator of the "Indian Football Supporters' Club" Friends of India and Indian Football lovers worldwide , I , Rene Barreto, had the privilege to meet Stephen Constantine informally here in London over a cup of "Chai" (Tea). We shared our thoughts on Football and other subjects too - one of them was Goa. I am no great writer - but I would nevertheless like to share Stephen's thoughts on Indian Football with you. I hope Novy Kapadia does not find me wanting in this informal interview - but Novy , I am sure, will make amendments for that when he meets Stephen in Delhi - for another interview. To begin , I found that Stephen - as he would like to be known - a person who means business even at informal meetings - when you talk football! He talks straight - does not mince his words and does not like to be told what he should do " that is in football only -I hope "- in other words - he is no push over - his previous appointments proves to us this. He has this saying - Talk is CHEAP ! Who is Stephen Constantine. ? Stephen Constantine is the newly appointed national football coach/team manager for India - he flies out on June 14, 2002 via Mumbai to Kolkata to take up this his new appointment - his final destination is not known yet - it could be Kolkata, Goa, Delhi or any other destination in India ? We hope to keep you posted of his progress through the IFSC-International. Stephen Constantine was born in London, England on October 16, 1962. He grew up in north London and has also lived in Cyprus, Nepal and the United States. In 1995 Stephen married Lucy and in 1997 their daughter Paula was born, while in September 2000 the newest addition to the family Christiana was born. The informal chat Rene had with Stephen Rene - Stephen, how do you feel going India - to take up your new appointment? Stephen - I feel very excited, its a enormous challenge as there is a lot of work to be done and I look forward to the work to be done and very much look forward to it. Rene - What do you think of Indian football now? Stephen - The question there is going to take long, longer that this tape is going to go! The only thing I believe is that India should be is, on a bigger platform than they are - they have the potential to do better than they have been doing and hopefully I can do that for them. Rene - What are your plans for football in India - do you have any specific plans? Stephen - Immediately after I get there, we have a training camp in Bangalore and we will be preparing for the Asian games which are being staged in Korea - so that is the immediate objective. Rene - Do you have a message to the members of "Indian Football Supporters Club -International" world wide ? Stephen - I think they are doing a good job in supporting their team and supporting their country - something which we need, not only in India but in all other countries too. There needs to be UNITY and if we can have this unity and support for India - regardless of which state you come or which religion you are. The important thing is that - India is in the forefront - so that we will be doing everything supporting them and helping India realize their potential and why not - The WORLD CUP! Rene - Do you have the support from all those concerned in Indian football? Stephen - So far, everyone I have spoken to regarding India - has been supportive BUT - Talk is Cheap! he adds and we wait to see.. We look forward to a NEW Chapter in Indian Football - I am very confident that we will see great progress . that is . if there is no interference! This is a point that Stephen takes great pain to make - interference and I quit ...says Stephen. Please note , if any of you would like to join the Indian Football Supporters Club International - or would like to a branch of IFSC in your area , you may do so by writing to Arunava Chaudhuri the IFSC - Chief Supervisor: ( btw Arunava is also a member of Goanet . ) Stephens meet in pictures - Photo http://community.webshots.com/album/40688091ycVXME For further details Please visit Stephen Constantanine website - http://www.stephenconstantine.com/ His email [EMAIL PROTECTED] An earlier formal interview done by Arunava Chaudhuri of indianfootball.com can be read at http://www.indianfootball.com/index1.html Arunava Chaudhuri - [EMAIL PROTECTED] webmaster http://www.indianfootball.com/ alternative server: http://www.indianfootball.de/ IIFS 2002 - International Indian Football Series home: http://iifs.indianfootball.com mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] By books, CDs, DVDs, etc at AMAZON through indianfootball.com: http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/redirect-home? tag=theunofficiwe-21&site=home GMX - Die Kommunikationsplattform im Internet. http://www.gmx.net . =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-W-E-B

[Goanet] 15th anniversary of Goa Statehood
possible duplication. Goemkars - May 30th is the second of the three days of special significance this year to our Konkani language, not because it is election day in Goa but because it is the 15th anniversary of Goa Statehood (which statehood would not have been possible without the territory having first its own approved language). The other two special dates are: February 4, 15th anniversary of the Language Act which made Konkani Goa's sole official language, and August 20, 10th anniversary of the Parliamentary law which incorporated Konkani in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. Jorge de Abreau Noronha who lives in Portugal has written a small article which I am posting here today on his behalf. rene GOA DAY - 2002 Thanks to the timely initiative of Rene Barreto in 1999, the yearly celebrations of a Goa Day became a reality as from 2000, wherever there are Goans or descendants of Goans, be it in various cities, towns and villages of Goa be it in the diaspora. And I suppose everybody recollects why August 20 was selected as the ideal date for those celebrations: to honour the day when our language "came of age" (if I may say so) by being included in the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution and by being in this way recognised as one of the national languages of the country. The 2001 celebrations were held under the banner of Solidarity, and August 19 of that year, being a Sunday, saw for the first time the GOA DAY being celebrated in Lisbon. In this year 2002 let us dedicate the celebrations in a very special way to our avoi-bhas, to our mother tongue Konkani. It is true that many of us in the diaspora, and particularly those of the second and third generations - born far from the tiny state of Goa and many of them with difficulties in maintaining contact with their roots -, do not know to write or sometimes even to speak the language and, of those who do write it, most do so in the Roman script while unfortunately this script is being discarded in Goa thus affecting adversely, for instance, the tiatrs which have been traditionally written in "Romi Konknni" by Christian tiatrists. But, irrespective of whether we know or not the language of our state, it is undeniable that amchi bhas is the basis of our "Goanness" and, if only for this reason, we are dutybound to honour it. And why do I say that the 2002 Goa Day should give special relevance to our language? At least for three strong reasons: February 4th of this year was the fifteenth anniversary of the Language Act by which Konkani was approved as the official language of Goa by Goa's Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) today, May 30th, marks the fifteenth anniversary of Goa's statehood which would not have been possible if the territory didn't have its own official language; and August 20th will see the 10th anniversary of the unanimous approval, by the two houses of the Indian Parliament, of the law which included Konkani in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution. In Portugal there is an additional reason: it was in May 1987 that an association of Goans, Damanese, Diuese, Dadraites and Nagar-Haveliites was informally instituted, under the designation of "Casa de Goa", which was later legalised through a notarial deed on July 15 of the same year. It is thus the year of its fifteenth anniversary. The Goa Day - 2002 will therefore be recorded in Portugal, in August this year, as "Dia de Goa, Damco e Diu" (Goa, Daman and Diu Day), the organsing committee being busy in the planning of the multifarious celebrations along the period of 17th to 20th August. (Note: As in terms of the Portuguese "Estado da India" Dadra and Nagar Haveli were part of the district of Daman, for those residing in Portugal "Daman" includes those two enclaves which were annexed by India and turned into a Union Territory on August 11, 1961). Coming back to the language. Many Goans, especially the Christians, and particularly those in the diaspora, resent the fact that, when Konkani gained the status of a national language of India, it was approved that only Devnagri would be its true and legal script. A year ago I advocated that, our mother-tongue being the only one that is written in five or six different scripts (which is one of its richest facets), we should struggle to have this richness officially recognised. I remember having then been strongly opposed by some quarters. Recently however I was glad to learn that the Government of Karnataka had decreed that in that state the official script for the Konkani language would be Kannada and none else. Why then can t we have the Romi Konknni legalised in Goa? Let's face the facts squarely: in Karnataka (Mangalore, Karwar, etc.) Konkani is written in Kannada script, in some other region of the same state in Tulu, in Kochi in Malayali script, in Gujarat in Gujarati and Urdu scripts; so why not in Dev

So much about Chrystal Gomes. Last year, sometime in October, I did a big feature on her in a local South Asian paper. She had invited me to her performance at a comedy club. I also did a small feature on her in India Today (international edition). She was happy. After that I got her to perform at the Miss Canada-India Beauty Princess pageant. I thought of sending the piece to GOANOW, but, as it often happens with journalists, I forgot. I have known her since she served for a brief time on the Goan Overseas Association executive committee in the 80s. She was young then, and still young. I have known her father, Danny Gomes, who has been president of GOA and a trustee. In fact, it was he who suggested to her to invite me for her show when we bumped into each other at the Viva Goa festival last year. She and I are in constant email communication. Coincidentally, she's from Colva, my village. She's a wonderful person. Two months ago I was passing by her house and called her if we could have dinner as I had an invitation at a newly-opened Indian-Chinese restaurant. She's couldn't as she had a show, but insisted I visit her house. It was my first visit to her place. Surprisingly, she had left a scotch bottle with her dad to give it to me. Lets not make GOA another Gujarat .we may if we are not too careful. rene - Original Message - From: "William Robert Da Silva" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "rene barreto" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Saturday, May 18, 2002 6:47 AM message - WORLD GOADAY 2002 Goa World Day 2002 comes after 9-11 and 10.7 two fundamentalisms at war with each other. Goa World Day needs to focus on Goa and what is happening to it--the various political, religious and cultural forces that enrich it, exploit it and fragment it. This is the right time to think over what shape is Goa of the future? Thinking of Goa World Day is "Think about Goa" in 2002.
