This is just a 'refresh' for those who have forgotten
one of Mr Parrikar's promises during the Poinguinim
bye-elction.
Well the foundation stone for the Galgibaga and
Talpona bridges on the NH-17 bypass will be laid on
26th Jan 2005.
Details of time etc of the ceremony are likely to be
intimated by the authorities 'soon'

[Goanet]The benefits of the education dept CD for children!

2004-12-31 Thread Anthony Barretto
Hey Sachin this is what I wrote. Answer that and then
go to America.
If a CD on the Gujarat atrocities is shown in graphic
detail to young children all over India it will only
further antagonise the muslims against the Hindus. Let
the informed inform me how that exercise will benefit
anybody positively.

This is what you have written:
A CD on the riots in Gujarat has been shown not only
in India, but also all over the world. I understand
that some of the showing were in the universities in
the USA, with the approval of the universities.

For the Americans 'Gujarat' is just another event in
world history.
Where was it shown in India? Why? and How did it serve
its purpose. Answer that and please try to stick to
the point.
If that is impossible with you pl feel free to ignore

[Goanet]A New Muslim Political Party!

2004-12-29 Thread Anthony Barretto
With reference to the education dept's CD on the
freedom struggle my logic does imply that the
atrocities committed by Hindus on Muslims in Gujrat
should not be the subject of a film because tender
muslim minds might begin to harbour a hatred of
Hindus.
Check this for better effect: If a CD on the Gujarat
atrocities is shown in graphic detail to young
children all over India it will only further
antagonise the muslims against the Hindus. Let the
informed inform me how that exercise will benefit
anybody positively.
Perhaps a Muslim political party could win muslim
votes enmasse by making a true-to-facts Gujarat
atrocities CD.

[Goanet]Benefits of screening THE CD for students.

2004-12-27 Thread Anthony Barretto
Dear Mr Phadte

The Dept of Education makes the screening of the CD
mandatory. All the students (tender and susceptible
minds) watch it. They see the inquisition
(christian)atrocities against the Goan Hindus. They
nurture a sense of distrust and even hatred towards
today's christians (read the Goan christians - the
portuguese are long gone). Is that the benefit you are
talking about of reopening old wounds, Mr Phadte?
Otherwise please list out all the benefits of
screening the CD for the students.
Self-centred politicians have been doing everything to
find echoes of Gujarat in other states for their
selfish ends. Not all the people are idiots not to see
their twisted designs.

[Goanet]Tidal Wave

2004-12-26 Thread Anthony Barretto
December 27, 2004 - 12:20 AM
The after effects of the massive tidal waves triggered
by an Indonesian earthquake were felt in Canacona as
the waters continued to rise. Most villagers of
Palolem, Polem, Maxem and Galgibaga
vacated their houses anticipating the worst.
Over 3000 people are sheltered in the New Bus stand at
Canacona while many others have gone to Quepem.
The people in Babrem and Mashem have also vacated
their houses and moved to safer places.
No casualties reported.
Police are watching the scene for any eventuality.

India tidal wave toll tops 1,000

Massive tidal waves triggered by an Indonesian
earthquake slammed into southern India, killing about
1,000 people, mostly in Tamil Nadu state, sweeping
away boats, homes and vehicles, says said Home
Minister
Shivraj Patil.
He said on a private television network, Aaj Tak, that
the worst affected area was Tamil Nadu state, where
700-800 people were reported to have died, followed by
Andhra Pradesh state where the toll was about 200.
Another 14 people died in Kerala state and 14 in
Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Tamil Nadu's beaches turned into virtual open-air
mortuaries as fishermen's bodies washed ashore, and
retreating waters left behind others killed inland. At
least 200 people died in Tamil Nadu's capital Madras
alone, and up to 600 in other districts including
Cuddalore, Patil said.

Sea water flooded the streets of Cuddalore town,
flipping over dozens of cars and leaving some vehicles
perched atop road dividers.
Residents of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh state spoke
of four-metre walls of water slamming into the shore.

I was shocked to see innumerable fishing boats flying
on the shoulder of the waves, going back and forth
into the sea, as if made of paper, said P
Ramanamurthy, 40, who lives in Andra Pradesh's
Kakinada town.
Many boats were upturned, but fishermen were still
holding onto them. They also were pushed into the
sea, he said. I had never imagined anything like
this could happen.
Also, 46 people were killed in three districts of
neighbouring Andhra Pradesh state, police said. They
said 32 of them - including 15 children - had gone
into the sea for a Hindu religious bath to mark the
full moon day.
Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu states are on India's

of kilometres from Indonesia, where a magnitude 8.9
earthquake struck.
Two people were killed and 100 injured in Port Blair,
the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a remote
and sparsely populated archipelago in the Bay of
Bengal about 1,500 kilometres east of Madras.

My first mail to Margaret Mascarenhas was (regarding

more than a million thanks.
She agreed.
I made a trip to Tivim. Left the manuscript at her
neighbours (she was attending a funeral)
After that she tells me the cost for her editing
services would be about Rs 5000/- (This despite the
fact that I had duly informed her that I am a guy who
is perennially broke.)
And now when she talks of encouraging Goan writers, I
can only wish her good luck.
For the cover Mario Miranda promised me the moon and

don't you check some good artists, I am moving to

We certainly need to encourage Goan writers. Cheers!!

Let me confess at the outset that some organisation to
protect and promote Roman Konkani was the need of the
hour. Particularly in the absence of the Rev. Fr
Freddy and Felicio Cardozo.
So it felt good that DKA was taking up that task.
But, please allow me to be honest, DKA looks like it
is controlled by some selfish people out to promote
themselves in the name of Roman Konkani.
Point No 1.
I am not sure if this is the best place to post my
query directed to some individuals but I think there
is no harm in trying. This is Net age. Agree Fred?
Point No 2
Why announce a plain musical show as a MEGA event to
create awareness among the people about Goan culture
and Goan identity.
In all honesty it should have gone as a fund-raising
musical show for the new-born DKA. That too without
paying a single rupee to the singers (if they cared).
And felicitation by DKA? That's an incredible feat for
a new-born.
Point No 3
Fred, in the first place may be indirectly, I learnt
of the DKA MEGA event on Goanet. Well never mind, but
if you tell me the people at DKA have not heard of
goanet I won't accept that.
Point No 4
I have noted the ;-) in Fred query And, what may I
ask, is the link between 'Naked Goa' and Romi Konkani
But it's a good question.
Naked Goa is a bit connected to Goan culture and Goan
identity but let me add 'The Practical English
Teacher' is not even remotely connected to Goan
culture and Goan identity.
But at least it would let some people know that people
like Daniel, Domnic, Lino, Fausto, Tony Martin and
scores of others don't write in Roman Konkani out of
any personal compulsion. They know English. A Roman
Konkani writer primarily, I have sold 5500 copies of
the Practical English Teacher in Goa -- an odious
comparison but I wonder how many copies Pundalik Naik
has sold of his best book. Just curiousity, no malice?
There are a few people who write good Roman Konkani
but don't want to show it because they want to be
known only as descendents of Oxford and Cambridge with
no inkling of Konkani)
Point No 5:
Who has told DKA that Sharon is the voice of Goa. By
what criterion/criteria anyway?
I remember some years back I had staged Wilson
Mazarello's tiatr in Kankonn. (not out of any love for
Konkani or tiatr but only hoping to make a profit.) It
ended up that only some 100 people turned up.
I don't remember the name of the tiatr but I
distinctly remember the sum. I had to pay the 'famous
duo' another Rs 500/- after a lot of spot borrowing.
And the great Wilson refused to continue the second
half of the tiatr unless he got his Rs 500/- For every
10 devils there is at least one good samaritan. Of
course I managed to pay him. I got a first hand taste
of Konkani mogis.
There was also something called tiatristanchi
sounstha. The Sharon/Wilson duo were part of it. I
wonder what happened.
Let the DKA spell out their constitution, aims and
objectives. Till then it is once again a matter of
amchi daar, tumche fozznem. Or is it amche fozznem
tumchem fest. (Amche = People who pay for a cause)

Thinking Outside the Box
See if you can figure it out without looking at the
answer at the bottom.
You are driving along in your car on a wild, stormy
night. You pass by a
bus stop, and you see three people waiting for the
bus:
1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.
2. An old friend who once saved your life.
3. The perfect man (or) woman you have been dreaming
about.
Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing
that there could
only be one passenger in your car? Think before you
continue reading.
This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually
used as part of a
job application.
You could pick up the old lady, because she is going
to die, and thus
you should save her first; or you could take the old
friend because he
once saved your life, and this would be the perfect
chance to pay him
back. However, you may never be able to find your
perfect dream lover
again.
The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants)
had no trouble
coming up with his answer.
WHAT DID HE SAY?

He simply answered: I would give the car keys to my
old friend, and let
him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind
and wait for the
bus with the woman of my dreams.
Sometimes, we gain more if we are able to give up our
stubborn thought
limitations.
Never forget to Think Outside of the Box.

Then I told him about an even more incredible place

Well Keri is a village in Canacona. No motorable or
even cycleable road to go there. You have to walk a
good THREE hours(3 hours make no mistake there) to get
there from Nadkem in Cotigao.
No primary school (need I add that there is no middle

phone? you must be joking.
The Keri people are a century behind civilisation.
I would love a copy of this mail in the hands of all

What do you people think?
Well I am sure the first question would be what did
the Congress do? It is a good question but does it
make sense to ask it now? We should have asked it then
and we didn’t. (Hit yourself once on the head with all
your might and at least start asking questions now if
you are still in your senses after one blow.)
Come on guys forget the US, Iraq, Palestine and all
that out-of-place rubbish, let's talk about Goa, Goans
and the Goan politicians.
BTW Mr Parrikar reminds of some people in my village
(Galgibaga) who have the most sophisticated gadgets in
their houses but no toilets. Never mind we have
Galgibaga beach and Galgibaga river and on the eastern
side there is a small hillock. The three together make
a toilet non-pareil.
It a matter of priorities folks.

good THREE hours(3 hours make no mistake there) to get
there from Nadkem in Cotigao.
No primary school (need I add that there is no middle
or high school), no power supply, forget water supply,
phone? you must be joking.
The Keri people are a century behind civilisation.
I would love a copy of this mail in the hands of all
the delegates and tourists visiting the IFFI fest.
What do you people think?
Well I am sure the first question would be what did
the Congress do?
Come on guys forget the US, Iraq, Palestine and all
that out-of-place rubbish, let's talk about Goa, Goans
and the Goan politicians.
BTW Mr Parrikar reminds of some people in my village
(Galgibaga) who have the most sophisticated gadgets in
their houses but no toilets. Never mind we have
Galgibaga beach and Galgibaga river and on the eastern
side there is a small hillock. The three together make
a toilet non-pareil.
It a matter of priorities folks.
Cheers! We will celebrate another
Liberation Day very soon on 19 December.
Perhaps Nehru was right: Ye Goa ke log ajeeb hai. Ha!
Haa!! Haaa!!!

My Village, My people
Picture a small paradise. Calm, serene with an empty
beach lined by casuarinas trees, two parallel rivers,
a patch of lush green fields and two communities
living in perfect harmony. That is Galgibaga in
Canacona, South Goa, a secret enclave sandwiched
between the Arabian Sea and a tiny hillock.
Passed over completely by the sands of time, Galgibaga
beach is ideally a poet’s delight and a Philosopher’s
retreat for its mystical and meditative ambience. It
offers a breath of fresh air to city-weary souls in
the warm embrace of nature.
“It’s a paradise,” says Orest Kap, a German painter
“It’s something to be felt and experienced. It is an
individual experience, to verbalize it is to limit
it.”
If you come to our village you won’t have the heart to
leave it if only you see the wonderful estuary and
hear the endless vast ocean making amazing music of
love for the villagers and at times beating drums of
war in all its ferocity for anybody who dares to
violate it.
If you come to our village you won’t have the heart to
leave it if only you see the lovely cottages of fine
architecture resting amidst slender coconut trees and
palms that sway gently to an unknown rhythm.
If you come to our village you won’t have the heart to
leave it if only you lie a while on the soft bed of
pines of the Casuarinas (trees) that dot the Galgibaga
coast.
If you come to our village you won’t have the heart to
leave it if only you venture into the river on a fine
moonlit evening with a bottle of feni or urak on a
tiny canoe for that mysterious over-the-moon feeling.
If you come to our village you will not have the heart
to leave without a glimpse of an Olive Ridley turtle
crawling majestically on the singing sands of
Galgibaga.
If you come to our village you will not have the heart
to leave it if only you meet its people. Their warmth,
hospitality and charm will wrap you in a spell that is
hard to break. And their courage is legendary. When a
Chinese ship wrecked on the shores of Galgibaga with a
thunderous bang in the wee hours of a day in June 1960
the daring villagers unmindful of the monsoon fury of
the waves ventured into the sea and managed to rescue
some of the crew. The wreck, seen better during low
tide, bears testimony to that heroic moment.
If you come to our village you will not have the heart
to leave only if you come. But don’t forget Galgibaga
is like a lovely rose hence there are bound to be some
thorns around. And the rose would not be half as
beautiful as it is without the thorns. Can the day
have any meaning without the night?
Don’t be shocked when you hear Ladrus and Pedrus
exchanging choice obscenities at dawn. For at sunset
you’ll be as surprised to see them coolly sipping feni
together in a pub. Just like the best pals in the
world. Obscenities are as much a part of Galgibaga as
are the gentle roaring beats of the ocean and the
singing sands.
And there are a few Jakis and Jakins who have the
perennial habit of talking about others. Who is with
whom and whose wife has plans to elope with whose
husband and so on. And there is Tom who feels that he
is the President of the States because his neighbour
thinks that he is the Prime Minister of India. All the
same it adds to the spice.
And yet not all is well with this paradise. If you
come to our village you would not have the heart to
leave it without a tinge of sorrow pulling at your
heart when you look at the small hillock just behind
St Anthony’s High School. A hillock that had remained
a witness to all generations. It had stood there for
hundreds and hundreds of summers and nobody could
doubt that it would always be there from now to
eternity. But today there is very little left of the
hillock. The serpentine Konkan Railway has almost
eaten it up. The hillock lies bleeding and torn into
shreds. With an amputed look it feels naked, stripped
of its grandeur and beauty.
Galgibaga now has the brow of many an
eco-conservationist and others clouding with worry
over a move to set up beach shacks in this virgin
territory. This, despite the fact that the beach is a
protected area for turtle nesting and sees the
hatching of over 3000 eggs every year.
A villager expressing his apprehension says, beach
shacks can only make our beloved Galgibaga another
haven of sun, sand, wine, women and sex for the
hippies who have nothing to offer us except drugs,
nudism, a philosophy of free-love, sex and AIDS.
Beach shacks or no shacks the rape of this unspoilt
child of Mother Nature is imminent.
If you treasure any fantasies of visiting this shadow
land of dreams, pack you bags and get

Dear Miguel Braganza,

If there is any sarcasm in the questions you have
raised over my mail I have missed it.
I thought the answers to the questions you ask were
obvious. Never mind if I have to say the obvious if it
needs to be said. Here are the answers.

If the Government stops releasing advertisements
to a particular newspaper, it is no new thing.
oHeraldo has suffered the same fate in the
past...and has overcome it, and grown.

Of course the Herald has grown without government ads.
But Goa's New York Times has remainded a govt
mouthpiece conveniently denying the public what it
wants to know for fear of losing its assured ad
revenue.

Gomantak Times can definitely do that. They
have to step up their marketing and mop up other
sources of ad revenue.

The Sakal Group can print and sell the paper for
another 100 years for a loss. And how they mop up
other sources of ad revenue is also not the point.
The point is if the Sakal group decides today that
they need the govt ads and stops writing anything that
Mr Parrikar and Co are not pleased to read, then some
facts that we got to know would never have been told
to us.
And if all the newspapers decide to be govt puppets
for govt ads, dear Miguel, you know how that would be
for those who depend entirely on the newspapers for
their news.

How does the interest of a newspaper become 'public
interest'...the basis for a PIL ? I am at a loss to
understand.
My Dear Miguel. I am a tax payer. And if the
government is misusing my and other tax payers money
to promote his private interest (papers who get the
Govt ads don't utter a word against him. This is what
I call private interest) then is it not a fit case to
file a PIL seeking equal distribution of Govt ads for
all local newspapers. At least that will make them
free to say what they want to say without any fear of
losing.
Freedom of the Press, for one thing, should mean the
press should be free to write what it has to without
losing on govt Ad revenue?

Public money, private interest

If Mr Parrikar chooses not to give Govt advertisements
to a newspaper that dares to give the people the truth
then what are the people going to do. After all it is
public money. And in a democracy the government is of
the people.
Why should Mr Parrikar be cooly allowed to use public
money for his personal interests?
The opposition may have lost their balls to all the
skeletons in their cupboard but can't we do something?
May be a PIL?
The NGOs? OK OK I am getting a bit too idealistic. But
a few journos, who have still not sold their souls,
certainly can do something at least on this score.

Wheels Of Death

Jeevan had just visited his first-born in a city
hospital. Blessed with a child after twelve years of
marriage Jeevan was the happiest man. On his way to
the bus-stand he was walking by the side of a busy
road building castles over the future of his newborn
son. Just then a groggy-eyed punch-drunk youth rammed
his father’s Opel Astra into Jeevan from behind. The
dreams he fancied were shattered along with every bone
in his body. In a moment the happiest man was a dead
man.
Perhaps even stick-in-the-mud fatalists will deny that
Jeevan had to die. And yet hundreds of innocent
Jeevans are lost every year on the roads of this tiny
state. Today nobody out on the roads is safe. Getting
out and getting back home is something that can no
more be taken for granted.
The casualties are so high. About 250 people are
killed and 2500 are injured every year. Every 36 hours
one person dies from an accident. There is an accident
every four hours in Goa. For once the statistics do
not mislead.
Everything said, public safety remains a non-issue. If
anything, the authorities are extolling the virtues of
personal safety. Their logic, which is conveniently
limited to two-wheelers, is simple. If you want to
secure your skull in one piece wear a helmet. The
others, including four-wheeler drivers, commuters and
pedestrian Jeevans, can go straight to hell via the
highway.
As more and more lives are lost in rapid succession on
the roads one is left wondering if there are any laws
at all to check these unnecessary and avoidable deaths
and maiming.
I happen to have the 1984 edition of Indian Penal Code
(IPC) of India which I had bought for Rs. 10/- on a
footpath in Bombay. I checked for the charges.
Section 304A carries a maximum term of two years or
with fine or with both for a rash and negligent act
causing death but without intention to cause death.
And the fine of Rs 2000/- is no more than a light slap
on the wallet.
To escape conviction for culpable homicide which
carries a 10 year term under section 304, it is often
the argument of defence counsels that if a person is
drunk he is not in command of his senses, so how does
he know he will kill someone?
And what does the law have to say about drunk driving?
Never mind. I find the IPC boring. If my knowledge
serves me right the breath-analyzer reports are not
admissible in a court. To formally book a drunk driver
the police have to take him for a blood test. And as
everybody knows the police would rather prefer to take
a few extra rupees home than take an offender for a
blood test unless he is not the obliging type.
It is common knowledge that the deadly cocktail of
alcohol and speed has caused innumerable deaths. If
the authorities expect to take drunken driving
seriously then they should initiate necessary
amendments to the hopelessly antiquated laws to make
drunken driving a serious offence punishable with a
life term or death sentence -- exactly what they give
to their innocent victims.
However mere changing of laws won’t help. What is even
more vital is imbibing a sense of duty and social well
being in our corrupt police force. Otherwise our
police will handle the cases as they always do; a
chance to make a quick buck. Steep laws will only go
to facilitate their get-rich-fast drive.
Yet it would not be fair to exclusively blame the cops
for the malady of road deaths. The affluent parents
are often the real culprits. The children pay the
price for their parents’ indulgence. The school going
teenager zooms off in a Mitsubishi Lancer on an
evening drive. Of course he has money, loads of it,
for a celebration of life. It is as if their parents
want to announce to the world: “Look, we are the rich
and life is one big celebration.” We are impressed and
hope you shall not have the ignominy of seeing your
kid as dead meat or comatose vegetable.
But there is more to it than drunk driving. Some
accidents are beyond the control of even sober
drivers. Waterlogged potholes, the size of craters,
become death traps when a normal rain turns into a
flood for unsuspecting two-wheeler riders. You try to
miss a pothole and is knocked from behind. Lucky if
you survive. If not mince meat.
The roads are too narrow and in unmotorable condition,
roadsides are dug up with ditches left unmarked,
streetlights don’t work, road signs are missing and
the corner traffic police is busy emptying a Gutka
(tobacco) packet in his mouth. The dead-to-the-world
civic authorities are as much responsible for road
deaths and need to be made accountable for the
pathetic condition of roads in the state.
As things stand, it

George Pinto's first question reminds me of the time I
approached Fundacao Oriente with the manuscript of my
now self-published book Naked Goa.
With one sweeping look at the contents of the book I
was told by an officer of Fundacao Orient (Was it Ms
Evon Rebello?) We don't publish negative stuff?
And the people at the Goa Art Culture department
almost chased me out with my proposal like I was a
rabid dog.
Ironically, the scores of mails I have received from
foreigners who have read the book say it is a
beautiful book of ugliness.
Anyway it will be almost an eternity before we can
expect anything sensible at least from our
politicians. And Fundacao Orient is always right. They
exactly know what to publish and what to leave out of
their scheme of things.
Cheers!! Come 19 December and we will celebrate
another Liberation Day.

Cheers Again!

First: This is no Sant Anton seating in judgment (this
is just my personal view)
Two: Goa's fun image is certainly not an unfounded
myth.
Third: I agree that there are many Goans who believe
that there is nothing wrong with/in Goa and shoving
the bad things under the carpet. Like Samir we have
to be graceful and accept that not everything is OK.
Please don't ask me what is wrong with Goa. Read my
book Naked Goa. It is a rare book that includes the
negative side of Goa. Or rather Goa as it is without
all the frills of beauty and architectural heritage.
Fourth: Again I am not Sant Anton but I get the
impression that if Miguel and Samir were at an arms
reach of each other the one who would knock first
would drop the other cold. Ha! Ha! Ha! Reminds me of
Goan dhirio.

Hi to all 7k+ members of goanet

The first time I learnt Goanet has a membership
strength of 7K+ I was impressed.
Well now I am shocked. I asked Goanetters for views on
Matka. But only two responded. My net friend Dr Colaco
didn't take it seriously but at least he responded.
Cecil Pinto the eternal humourist (hope the word is
right otherwise I might be flooded with mails on
humour, the adjective forms of it, etymology, or on
how it is plain bad english, konklish or hinglish.)
But(kidding part aside) the only suggestion that Cecil
made was VERY good. (Well digging a lot of shit is all
right if you hope to strike gold. In that sense I was
not disappointed at the end of Cecil's mail. Honestly,
I thank Cecil for giving a focus to my vague idea on a
book on Matka.)
Coming to the point what shocks me is the impression I
get that the 7000 odd silent members are so bereft of
ideas that they will prefer to shut up even when asked
a few questions on a life and death issue like
gambling.

Well I would like to make a suggestion to the
administrators of goanet. Any member who does not make
at least a single posting in a year should be
automatically dropped from the Goanet list with due
notice. Anyway my simple comprehension does not tell
me what makes these people human if they have nothing
to say in a whole year -- 365 sunrises and 365
sunsets. If a person says nothing happened well it
means he/she is not breathing. (I know there are some
who may even ask me what I exactly mean by not
breathing and yet courtesy tells me the euphemism is
well in place)

I have been a member of Goanet for almost two years.
And I can definitly say I know the names of all the 50
plus Goanetters who keep the Goanet digest going.
Everyone particularly the Non Resident Goans should be
grateful to gentleman Herman Carneiro for such a
wonderful idea ten years back. Well at least now the
sleeping goanet giants should rise from their dogmatic
slumber and let us know what they have to say. Never
mind if it means gems to some and rubbish to others.

And for those who feel like responding to my queries
on matka I would appreciate some serious replies in my
personal inbox.

Thanx

Tony Martin

Hi Everybody

I am a young writer. I am writing a book on Matka. OK,
stop smiling and read on.
The book will primarily focus on case studies of
people who are matka addicts, of people who have
kicked the habit for good. Interviews of the gamblers
and their kin.
I would appreciate your comments on the following
points:
What do you think about this form of gambling?
What do you think about the people who play matka?
How do you generally feel about people who have become
victims of vices like gambling, drug addiction and
alcoholism.
Do you believe that “Rationality notwithstanding man
is a product of circumstances”?
Do you think that gamblers, alcoholics and drug
addicts become what they become out of choice?
Do you know anybody who has become rich through matka?
Do you know of anybody who has landed himself or/and
his family in trouble because of his habit?
What rehabilitation measures would you want to suggest
to get these people to see reason and kick their
habit?
Do these people deserve a second chance?
Do you have any vice? Like smoking, drinking, drugs,
sex (with the prohibited women including your
neighbour’s beautiful wife or daughter)
Have you ever found yourself caught in the firm grip
of a vice? How did you get out of it?

The turtle nesting season began on Galgibaga beach
with one turtle nesting site.
Sameer Bandhari a young local has been keeping a
watch, since the last five years, on the turtles
visiting this beach for nesting. He gets paid a

A few days back Dinesh Bandekar, a forest guard, has
posted a new recruit Shashikant who does not know
anything about turtles. He sits in a bar before he
gets to the beach. Wonder if the RFO there will
question Bandekar's wisedom in selecting a watchman

If Dinesh Bandekar has his way, well, all I can do is

Anthony Gaffino, Navelim wrote a letter to the Editor
- Goa Observer:

ANGLO CONGRESS
Anthony Gaffino, Navelim.

THE CONGRESS “cham-chas” in Goa as in other parts of
the country who
keep
boasting about all the achievements this so called
corrupt secular
party has
given this country, I wish to ask these jokers: Was it
not this very
same
Congress who were responsible for the partition and
break up of this
country
which resulted in the giving away of a large part of
India to Muslims?
Who
now call themselves Pakistan and Bangladesh ?
Ironically, these very
same
Congress-wallahs now in order to stay in power support
millions of
illegal
immigrants from Bangladesh who are (thanks to the
Congress) indulging
in all
kinds of nefarious and anti-national activities.
This is the true, so called secular Congress culture
of divide and
rule. By
supporting people like Laloo “Goonda” Prasad who
should be felicitated
for
being the most successful goonda running Bihar like
the mafia with
Congress
support. It's a tragedy that after they misruled and
divided India for
45
years we are seeing the results today. They are not
satisfied with
trying to
impose an Italian Prime Minister, who speaks Roman
Hindi, on us. They
are
also preparing to have the first Anglo Indian (Rahul
Gandhi) as Prime
Minister. So pathetic is the state of Congress, they
are willing to go
to
any length of lying and deception to satisfy their
lust for power. They
should hang their heads in shame and stop envying the
BJP who has given
this
country the best governance since 1947. India and Goa
in particular is
truly
shining and no matter how hard the Congress along with
some of their
stooges
in the Press try to convince us otherwise, we the
people all know the
truth.
Incidentally, I am not a politician or a BJP member.
Yes, I am an
ordinary
citizen. A Catholic with my head screwed on the right
way.
--
Comment:
If Gaffino needs to tell people that he has his head
screwed on the right way, it reminds me of the mad who
are often heard shouting in the street, I am not mad.
I am not mad.
Among other things raped nuns, murdered priests and an
unprecedented communal unrest is what the BJP has
given this country.
For obvious reasons the BJP in Goa has not been able
to present a picture of itself in all its hues.
If its true picture emerges it will drive peace-loving
Goans mad but at least some like Gaffino will regain
their sanity.

[Goanet]Indianised Italian cat v/s home-bred jackals

2004-04-18 Thread Anthony Barretto
Hi

By now, the minorities except a few have either seen
or got a good taste or should we call it a strong dose
of the BJP's ideology. Demolitions, Godhras,
unprovoked attacks and murders of nuns, priests and
missionaries are already tearing this nation apart.
Now can anyone imagine the atrocities if BJP gets a
clear majority at the Centre.
The Bajrang Dal, The VHP, the RSS and the BJP fanatics
will finish this great nation before they finish their
term. And a lamb in the winter of its life will be
able to do precious little to keep the wolves in
place.
Reminds me of a story by Zai Whitaker -- What
happened to the Reptiles? Read it.
An indianised Italian cat is certainly a safe bet over
home-bred jackals.

Regards

Tony Martin

[Goanet]vajpayee calling!!!!

2004-04-08 Thread Anthony Barretto
Hi Everybody

I am sure this is not very amusing to an objective
mind.
My semi-literate neigbour came rushing to me all
excited and said that he had received a call on his
mobile (BSNL) from Atalji.
What did he say? I asked
Oh! he spoke for two minutes about how BJP has made
hamara desh samrudh.
Well it's election time and the BJP is conveniently
using the BSNL to promote its party.

[Goanet]Announcing a new party!!

2004-04-05 Thread Anthony Barretto
Hi Goanetters

Read something about a new party on Goanet.
Well! Around this time the only party that makes sense
to Goans is an Urak party.

Urak Party (free) on 11 April (Easter). Interested
report at Galgibaga beach (behind the church) on 11
after mid night mass.

(Galgibaga is in Canacona. If you didn't know that
after one murder, the shacks controversy and the
turtle ridleys than be sure you have rocks in the head
bigger than the ones on the either extremes of the
Galgibaga beach.)

Urak is free all right. But do come with your own
chouris pav or pea nuts whatever you prefer with urak.

Cheers!!

[Goanet]Help

Hi

My Daughter Nikki (8 years, Std II) is suffering from
meningomyelocele with neurological deficit leading to
sphincter dysfunction and motor deficit. This is a
birth defect which in lay terms means she has no
control over her bowel movements. She walks with a
limp.
If anybody knows of a doctor who could help I would be

She was operated by Dr Sanjay Khope well known

[Goanet]suggestions

Hi Gabe

If the list was exhaustive there was no point in
inviting suggestions.
But your accusatory tone makes me uncomfortable. I
know you know better.
And I am sure the Muslims have a lot to celebrate
which the Disavoll Calendar and ignorant me have
missed out. I and others on the net shall certainly
appreciate any positive contribution on that.
Looking forward with great expectations. Of course I
am aware that great expectations can also mean great
disappointments. But this time I am willing to take
the risk.

[Goanet]Remo

2004-02-25 Thread Anthony Barretto
Extracts from Frederich Noronha's article Remo rage
against bankrupt Bharat

Remo said in an interview published in Panaji: This
whole country, which was once the cradle of deep,
high-thinking philosophy and art and literature,
seems to have gone intellectually bankrupt, and
Bollywood seems to be the beginning and end of life
as we know it.

Remo reminds me of a story `The Four Fortune Seekers'
by Sudhir M Ghosh. The four scholars feel let down by
the villagers because they refuse to patronise them.
They leave the village and go in search of their
fortune. But they end up tasting both fire and cold.
In declaring the whole country intellectually bankrupt
purely on the people's response to his music Remo only
goes to prove that his world begins and ends with
music. And ask any intellectual in Goa or in the rest
of the country and they will tell without a second
thought that what he has been dishing out in the name
of music is nothing but unmitigated and undiluted
rubbish.
I would certainly be not in a position to judge the
intellectual dept of the people in India, but I could
safely say without being too off the mark that Remo is
only a moron who got lucky.
---

That'll be my way of saying 'Feed donkeys with
grass, not asparagus'. And I'll probably write that
caption on the inside cover of the album,
Remo added. But Remo rued the lack of appreciation
for serious artistic work in India.

Well at least Remo should thank his stars and the
undiscerning donkeys who put him on the high pedestal
he is today. Never mind from a high everything below
looks small.

Shobhaa De sells more than Arundhati Roy; David
Dhawan's blockbusters
are more watched than Satyajit Ray's masterpieces,
he said.
Remo seems to forget that it is the people who
patronise Shobhe De and David Dhavan that have
patronised him.
People who can appreciate the masterpieces of Satyajit
Ray will not tolerate even for a few seconds any
rubbish -- even if it goes labelled as Remo's music.

--
Remo is an old hat. Rather than worrying himself on
the intellect of the Indians he would do well to check
his frustration and his `music'. And perhaps do some
yoga.
On his foreign tours I would advise him to wear a
crash helmet just incase the donkeys there refuse to
take asparagus and get aggressive.

[Goanet]Bootleg

2004-01-18 Thread Anthony Barretto
Hi

This is just for the record.
Feni is neither illicitly made nor illegaly sold.
The toddy tappers pay an annual license fee of Rs
50/-for distillation. Plus they pay Rs. 2.50 per
coconut tree per month in tax. The distillation as
well as the sale of feni has givernment sanction.
Hence in my modest opinion the noun or adjective
bootleg for feni is erroneous.
I am sure Gabru will have something to differ. Welcome
Gabru. But personally I have nothing more to offer on
this issue.

Hi Everybody

Best wishes for an exciting 2004.

It's my head and it's my life. And it is entirely a
subjective matter if, as a two-wheeler rider, I choose
to leave my brain exposed to hemorrhage. It's for me
to constantly be aware of the fact that I could be
dead meat any moment on our infamous roads.
Rather than telling us what we should do to protect
our susceptible skull the authorities would do well to
do well what they are expected to do. To give back our
roads some semblance of roads and to control traffic
effectively partcularly at strategic points.
Ironically, commonsense is something not that common
to the point of being rare.
So from tomorrow we will be forced to ride with
helmets as if on the moon full of crater-like
potholes. Happy moon ride.

2003-12-28 Thread Anthony Barretto
Goanet next meets in Goa: January 7, 4 pm (meeting point: Kala Academy canteen).
Goanet founder Herman Carneiro will be there. See you there!
--

Hi Gilbert

You are very articulate.
Personally I am not against tourism. It is almost the
backbone of our economy.
But let me add soemthing about Palolem beach -- the
uncrowned queen of Goa's Beaches. (In Canacona South
Goa)

There are two avoidable things about this beach. One
nudism. One cannot walk on the beach with parents and
children without squirming in embarrassment at the
naked flesh lying around. I don't know how it is in
New york but in Goa the cops are incompetent
nincompoops at the back and call of vicious
politicians and their self-syled cronies.
They could start by politely telling the foreigners
that this is not a nudist colony. But politeness and
Goa Police are total strangers.
Two. Shattered family life. There is a marked rise in
the standard of living of the people in Palolem but
their family life is shattered. Now most of the
parents there have money but they hardly know where
their children have gone. They are very sure the
children they have are not the same children they had
a few years ago. And ask them, despite everything they
regret it. If progress relates to the acquisition of
wealth we have improved, but if it has something to do
with character and values we are almost regressing to
the dark ages of history.
Matter of fact what you say is beyond all contention
but the plain fact is in Goa the govt machinery is
non-funtional to the point of anything goes. Without
exaggeration the first words foreigners learn in Goa
are Chalta hai.
With a few checks and balances Goa could indeed be
promoted as the ultimate 365 days tourist destination.
If it is not it is just that nobody shoots our
slumbering cops dead and nobody is bothered about
sending unprincipled and shameless politicians to the
oblivion of the desserts of Siberia.

[Goanet]Konkani

2003-12-20 Thread Anthony Barretto
Goanet meets in Goa: December 27, 12 noon and January 7, 4 pm (meeting point: Kala
Academy canteen). See you there!
--

Hi Godfrey

I will at least grant that your article is well
written but it is nothing substantial or beneficial to
either Goans or the cause of Konkani. Adversely it
could only stoke communal mistrust.

For obvious reasons Devanagri Konkani is rightfully
the official language. (Before I was hard-pressed for
time I used to even write in Roman Konkani, I even
have a story book to my name Mukt Jinn Jietana. But
that does not compel me to ask why Devanagri, why not
Roman? Because I know the reason and if you care to
think objectively I am sure you will see why.)

I think issues like Konkani-Marathi, Nagri-Roman
konkani are dead. It is now regional v/s English.
Forward-looking people will agree that the imposition
of Konkani/Marathi at the primary stage is against the
free-wheeling spirit of a democratic society.

Freedom of choice is something fundamental to
democracy. And I am sure it is not only limited to
choosing candidates during elections. The authorities
should leave it to the people to decide what medium of
instruction they should choose for their child.

The students should even be free to choose what
subjects they want. I have a friend who can make a
picture almost as good as a photograph. But he could
never make it to BFA because he could not clear his
Maths I II at SSC after 4 attempts. What type of
education is it if it blocks us from promoting our
potential or talents?

The Parrikar government’s move to make Math optional
is a great step in the right direction. The
inconvenient implications of the move could only be
avoided at the cost of victimizing our students.

Let’s stop being sentimental and start being
practical. We have a soft corner for our regional
language. But regional languages, particularly
Konkani, hold no future for tomorrow’s citizens of
India both on the employment front as well as in
social intercourse.

Unless we realize this important fact our English
medium schools and colleges will continue to be
English medium in paper and Konkani medium in reality.

Regards

Tony Martin

[Goanet]Beach sharks invade virgin territory -- Galgibaga beach

2003-12-16 Thread Anthony Barretto
Galgibaga now has the brow of many an
eco-conservationist and others clouding with worry as
the virgin territory, Galgibaga beach is invaded by
beach sharks (Shacks). This, despite the fact that the
beach is a protected area for turtle nesting and sees
the hatching of over 3000 eggs every year.

If you treasure any fantasies of visiting this shadow
land of dreams, pack you bags and get going today.
Tomorrow this wonderful place may well go into the
oblivion of history as another paradise lost.

[Goanet]Congratulations!!

2003-12-06 Thread Anthony Barretto
Hearty Congratulations to St Xaviers college. Forty
fruitful years is indeed a milestone. The institution
is a top college of Goa and we are proud of it.
Best Wishes
Tony Martin

P.S.:
It is very common in Goa where even higher secondary
school teachers pride themselves with the Prof tag and
some even have printed visiting cards.
I am sure Mr Newman Fernandes the principal is not a
Prof. Cannot be.
I hope I am not being too blunt about this error. Pl.
No offense meant to the Xaviers faculty member who
posted the mail.

Hi

Agreed Sachin is an exceptional batman, but I don't
think Goanetters will like to read his profile in this
space. At least I thought it was totally out of place.

Please, this is what I think.

[Goanet]World AIDS Day

2003-11-30 Thread Anthony Barretto
Hi Everybody

December 1: World AIDS Day

What follows here is certainly not first aid to AIDS.
This is something to heed if you love life and living.
An article from my book Naked Goa. I hope it is not
out of place.

Tony

Get Hot Chill Out With AIDS!
Guess what follows unrestrained fornication? And mind
you there is a big prize for guessing the answer to
that.
Don¡¦t know? Well the answer is obviously AIDS
(Acquired Immuno deficiency Syndrome). And the prize
for those who know the answer is life itself.
First the chilling statistics. Since the first HIV
case was detected in Goa way back in 1987, the number
of HIV positive cases has been rising by leaps and
bounds. Till October 2001, the total number of HIV
cases reported to the GSACS are 4305. The actual
figure could be much higher. From January 1990 to May
2001 57.26% of those tested positive were married.
So its time we wake up to the fact that it¡¦s not just
the homosexuals, bisexuals, junkies and prostitutes or
sex workers who are prone to AIDS. Even a housewife is
not safe. Earlier it happened only in the Africas and
the Americas or Bangkok and Thailand but not in Goa.
Goans could have occasional flings here and there and
be perfectly safe from it. Not anymore.
So what then? Is there no way to indulge in
fornication safely? In fact the answer cannot be a
conclusive yes or no. We are all potential victims ¡V
maybe by deliberate choice, carelessness or accident.
In the circumstances your best bet is to maintain a
strictly monogamous relationship and worship only your
wife if you love life. It¡¦s not about safe sex. As
the Sangh Parivar rightly puts it the slogan should be
¡¥sex exclusively with your life partner.¡¦ Or it
could be something like ¡¥Be faithful or be dead.¡¦
However, in an age when passions are running high and
nobody seems to rest content without experiencing the
ecstasy of making it with somebody else, a large
number of people would prefer to ignore the above
advice, in which case you would do good to go by a few
elementary rules for fornication.
„« Always carry a pack of the best available condoms.
Take Nirodh at your own risk.
„« Don¡¦t get carried away in the excitement
forgetting all about the condoms in your pocket.
„« Avoid casual sex with strangers.
„« When you just cannot restrain your unbearable
ardour, don¡¦t run around hunting for a lay; just make
a dash to the bathroom and relieve yourself.
„« If you have to visit a prostitute see that you use
a condom.
„« Try anal sex only when you are sure life is not
worth living.
Regarding oral sex, remember an HIV dose received
through the mouth is no less dangerous.
Interestingly, all these precautions and risks are
only for the sake of a few moments pleasure. But that
is the way the human anatomy is, which makes
exercising caution important.
But just imagine this, one sunny day, you are with
this stranger, a seductive, mightily attractive bomb
of a woman who invites you to have a dip into her cup
of joy. You too are all warmed up, but you don¡¦t have
a condom and there are none available in the vicinity.
What do you do?
If you believe in miracles, say nothing comes between
you and the pleasure; not even a condom, and get into
action. If not, speed home and read your Bible. You
have just been saved from what could be a lethal shot.

[Goanet]Gavaskar

2003-11-30 Thread Anthony Barretto
Hi friends

Stewards are stewards but if Sunil Gavaskar refused
his honorary membership at the MCC only because of a
steward's discourtesy I would rate him below the
steward. Not that my rating matters.

George/Goanetters,

Do we have (m)any examples of Goans/Indians who have
refused similar
awards (not
necessarily British awards) or memberships to esteemed
organizations
worldwide ?

I know one example - Sunil Gavaskar refused honorary
membership at the
MCC
because a ground steward once called out to him, Oi!
Where do you
think you are
going?

Best wishes - Bosco

[Goanet]Determinism?

2003-11-28 Thread Anthony Barretto
Hi

While everybody accepts that counselling is a sensible
option to deal with delinquent kids. The causes remain
an important issue for scientific inquiry and new
psychological findings.
Recents postings on Goanet on parents only incline
towards determinism. After all if we are only products
of a multipe combination of psychological, biological,
chemical and environmental factors than that almost
absolves us of our moral responsibility and renders
ethics redundant.

[Goanet]parents

2003-11-26 Thread Anthony Barretto
Hi Filomena

It is true that in the modern society man is often a
product of circumstances. Environmental factors do
influence children to a large extent.
All said the fact remains that character formation
begins almost in the cradle. Once right values, a
sense of discipline, respect for self and others are
ingrained in a child I think that remains.
Ironically, from what I have often seen around,
parents try to compensate their absence or lack of
attention to their children by showering them with
material goodies and money.
The effect is obvious. In the case of the Bombay
killers, the parents' profiles indicate just that.

This are just my views. May be I am wrong.

Regards

Tony
