PRESS NOTE
  FOR FAVOUR OF PUBLICATION

GaunkarsFirst warns Goans not to vote against their identity

GaunkarsFirst (GF) in their monthly newsletter Gaunkary Watch, have called
attention of all Goans, especially those in South Goa, not to commit the error
of voting for candidates or political parties who scorn, disregard and
continuously abet or tend to abet atrocities against native Goans and their
age-old institutions – the Comunidades of Goa.
GF sought to remind Goans that a 12-point “Charter of Demands of
the Gaunkars of Goa” was released in March this year and copies of the same
were submitted to all leading political parties active in Goa, both national
and regional, prior to the State Assembly elections held in June, for inclusion
in their respective election manifestos. Till date no political organization
has confirmed the incorporation of these legitimate demands even in the South
Goa Parliamentary elections.
GF warns Goans not to lose their unique identity by supporting
candidates and political parties that do not have the interests of native Goan
laws, culture, identity and institutions, such as the Comunidades of Goa, close
to their hearts.

  Yours truly,
  For GaunkarsFirst

2007-10-27 Thread Ana Maria Fernandes

Everyone has a right to write on the goanet and everyone has right to express
themselves. Agnelo Gomes is not any authority to condemn any one. He is
presumed to be a lay person just like Albert and me. Just because we have a
computer and just we are abroad that does not mean the people living in Goa
cannot express them their ill feelings emotions etc. The fact was and the fact
is the church is infected with maggots which breed on money greed and sex lust.
There are priest who have big fat bank accounts and there are many who have bad
character. Should I for fear of Agnelo Gomes keep my mouth shut and see the
filth that is accumulated in the backyard of the church ? just because the
priests are ordained and I am not? I do not think any lay people have craving
to visit foreign lands after seeing the conditions of foreigners that come to
Goa for holidays
I being a girl know the talk and behavior of many priests and the less I write
better it is.

Dear Joe,
Is it indeed dhobdobo, and upon seeing your correction -- changed my
note to you. It is one of the more common uses of Konkani onomatopoeia
(in animated language). However, nachot nachot cannot be an
onomatopoeic word, since its sound does not create meaning. Even
though it is repeated it does not suggest imitative harmony.

An interesting use of the word "dhobdhobo" is here: Her khell

seeing those bars imposing on the facade -- but that is something I
guess we will have to put up in India for sometime. With all the money

The next Portuguese TV soap from Portuguese TV channel TVI is going to be
filmed in Goa.

The famous Portuguese actors Alexandra Lencastre e João Perry are travelling
tomorrow to Goa to start the filming of 'Imperius', code name for the new
TVI soap which will replace current top of TV audiences 'Ilha dos Amores'.

The script of 'Imperius' includes the Portugal of today and the Portugal of
the past 1960s and focuses on a family living in Goa just before the
invasion of Goa by the Indian army in 1961.

Unfortunately, TVI cannot be seen in Goa. Goan viewers can only see RTPi.
TVI is, however, available throughout Europe through TV Cabo subscription
via the HISPASAT satellite.

Defeat Sardinha to expose Cong policies: Matanhy

HERALD CORRESPONDENT

CORTALIM, OCT 24 – Condeming the Congress for its
anti-Goan policy, the former Cortalim MLA Matanhy Saldanha speaking at a large
gathering in Sancoale exhorted the people to elect Dr Wilfred Mesquita to stamp
out the devious policies of the Congress Party.

Ridiculing the Congress for making false promises, Saldanha recalled that the
government had vowed it would pursue ‘aam aadmi’ policies and wondered as to
why it was imposing the SEZs on the people despite popular opposition.

Saldanha also mentioned that the Congress government had increased the DSS
doles from Rs 500 to 750 and now to Rs 1000 but in reality many people were not
receiving the same. “With elections round the corner, some people have started
receiving the doles,” Saldanha said it was time for the people to expose the
Congress for fooling the people by defeating Sardinha.

Accusing the Congress for imposing the election on the people, speakers at the
meet blamed politicians’ greed as responsible for the same. It may be recalled
that Churchill Alemao who was the then Congress MP had resigned from the Lok
Sabha to contest the State elections which led to the bye-election for the
South Goa Lok Sabha.

Others who spoke at include MP Shripad Naik, Sancoale Panchas
Tulshidas Naik, Partavva Bingui, Chicalim Panch Pratap Mardolkar, former
Cortalim sarpanch Antonio Francisco Fernandes and BJP Lok Sabha candidate Dr
Wilfred Mesquita.

Other issues such as law and order problem, victimization of non-Congress
workers were also raised at the meet.

Ex-Sancoale ZP Neelima Naik, and the supporters of Matanhy Saldanha including
GRE President Agnelo Rodrigues were also present in large numbers.

When you announce in Dubai about the Romi lipi my
friend said to me, to tell you, to ask Churchill about
the language amendment, cause last year you sang the
songs on Mopa airport & Romi lipi praising Churchill.

To tell you frankly the politicians like Churchill
want only the money & fame. He joined the congress not
because of Goa & Goans but for fulfill his personal
needs. They dont care about Goa & Goans.

Like Sardina, Luizinho, etc..., Churchill used the
tiatrists for his gain. Now, he got what he wanted he
must be saying "Tumi Tiatristak Xettar mar chouda"
sorry but this is the fact.

As you wrote Truth always wins. Politicians may delay
that "victory", but they cannot "deny" it. You are
correct Mr. Wilson.

D'Cruz to inspect Vaiguinim beach site...

By A Staff Reporter
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Gomantak Times, Oct 26, 2007

PANJIM: Architect Dean D'Cruz and advocate Ryan Menezes have been
appointed by the Goa High Court of Bombay at Goa to inspect a
controversial site on the Vaiguinim beach.

While the petitioners, the residents of Vaiguinim valley, allege that
it is a PCC structure on the beach, the respondents Formento Resorts &
Hotels (Cidade de Goa) claim that it is not a structure but a linear
wall. The two would have to inspect the site on or before November 27.

It may be recalled that appalled by the illegalities committed by
Formento Resorts & Hotels and angry with the lackadaisical attitude
and inaction of various government agencies to prevent such
illegalities, the residents of Vaiguinim valley had approached the
High Court.

According to the petitioners, the entire beach is occupied by deck
beds, beach umbrellas and barbeque platforms.

Moreover, Formento Resorts (Cidade de Goa) have erecteda private jetty
right into the Zuari river for the purpose of water sports activities;
a shed right upto the beach through which Formento Resorts operate
water sports activities and another shed erected upon rocks a few
metres away from River Zuari, wherein a generator plant and equipment
is installed.

The petitioner also informed the Court that some locations on the
beach are utilized for the purpose of dumping of garbage, to release
sewage into river Zuari, besides constructing a PCC structure tank etc
10 to 15 mts away from the sandy portion of the beach, private
chambers in public nallah and setting up swewage treatment plant very
close to residential buildings in Machados Cover and across the public
nallah.

[Goanet] Blog on Goan Arcitecture by Jose Lourenco

2007-10-27 Thread Cecil Pinto

http://www.goanarchitecture.blogspot.com/

Extract:

Goa is a little state on the west coast of India. It is popular as a
tourist destination for its sandy beaches and whitewashed churches and
colourful temples. In this blog we will journey through the nooks and
corners of this 3702 sqkm state and discover its varied architecture. I am
a civil engineer based in Goa and I never cease to be fascinated by the
charm of my own land, truly a tiny piece of paradise.
The saga of architecture in Goa has travelled from rustic 'khomps' (huts of
coconut thatchwork), rammed earth 'matiechim ghoram', temples built with
rock slabs, Neo-Roman churches, Portuguese period 'solars', Art Deco
houses, modernist buildings and back to 'green' homes! All these and other
genres are still well preserved in the Goan countryside and cities. Rather
than plod studiously through a linear path of architectural history, we
will ramble randomly here and there and enjoy the fruits of serendipity.

Our first house is a little rammed earth home at Borim in Ponda taluka.
Barely a couple of rooms with a tiny verandah, this house is striking for
the beautiful hue and texture of its red earth walls. Rammed earth
construction has been practised all over the world for thousands of years.
In its simplest form, wooden planks are laid parallel on the ground and
earth is rammed into this basic formwork. The soil is rammed by wooden
poles or by feet. The earth sets hard and the form is then lifted to fill
and ram the next course. Modern day RE construction uses highly precise
plywood formwork and a cement-stabilised earth mix. Popular in Western
Australia and other areas in Europe and the US, this modern avatar is yet
to take off in Goa.

The outlines of the wooden forms are visible on the wall surface. The
surface cracks are due to the clay content in the soil mix. A careful blend
of sand, silt and clay can prevent cracks. Over the years, weathering
produces a nice, rough texture.

More on this beautiful technique and the centuries old RE houses in Goa in
later posts.

Cheers

[Goanet] Beautifully written Agnelo -- Goa Bishop in San Francisco

2007-10-27 Thread cedrico dacosta
Dear Agnelo,

Much has been going on these days and long discussions about the church, caste
system etc in Goa.
Well initially we are given to understand the divide began at the church
committees itself, mostly called the confrarias.
many bramin priests, or some who thought they were bramins promoted this
bramins first policy.
Ask me, in Margao...till date such braminism prevails.
Forgive some people who write here and try to preach on Goan issues yet on the
other hand they claim to have not spent enough time in Goa itself.

As form one gentleman (?) or is he? from canada...you mentioned in your last
mailignore him, his opinions smack of so much lack of knowledge of the
ground knowlede of today's Goem. Roland has on various occasions tried to mess
up with my postings too by replying up with some, malicious lucklusture
mails...but in such cases...ignoring that source is the best policy. End of the
day he is united with us in the same land and the same church.

I have been following your writings and see that you are totally very much in
touch with the ground realities that go on in Goa these days...well done!

But over the years, this caste system has seen a decline as in Goa...most of
the people have worked hard to make a decent living for themselvesthere are
many instances wherein the once rich and influential brahmin families have lost
out in the race of life as their other counterparts have made enough money and
have earned the right respect in society,

Lets pray for a WORLD WITHOUT CASTE DIVIDE!

Yes, it has become a business for most.
It seems some of them just trying their luck.
And to do so, it only cost them Rs.100 per ad.
Advertised on the basis: 'Take it or leave it'
Who knows?
There might be a foreign party or a Delhi party who might take it at that
price.

Let me give a few examples (ads appearing Under Classified ads in local
Dailies)

NT, there are upto 75 such ads per day (each ad cost only Rs.100 minimum)

Any one up for discount?
Try this.
Flats at Fatorda, Margao.
Book before 30th Oct and get a discount of Rs. 1,00,000.

Buy one double bedroom flat and get one Peugeot car free.
Try this..

And this one made me to come up with this post.

There is a project by Landscape, at Odxel, Dona Paula
It a new project and most flats will be taken possession within next one month.
Half the apartment are facing the good Sea view and half are not.
Facing sea view, valley etc are normally priced at higher rates by almost all
builders.
e.g. if normal rate is say Rs.45K/sqmtr the it will be up to 55K/sqmtr for a
best view.
A friend of mine purchased a 2BHK (size105) apt in this same project about
15months ago for Rs.28Lacs but is has no direct sea-view from the apt. Sea

10 lacs more than purchase price?
Double the price?
Treble the price ?

Ans: None. It was more than the above.
Whopping Rs. 1 crore and 11 lacs (i.e. Rs.111,00,000 = about 139K GBP or about
283K USD or 197K EUR or 78 Kuwait Dinars)

Whereas, few days back, there was another ad appeared continuously about a apt
for sale from the same project, same size (except sea-View) it came with the
price tag too i.e. Rs.50 Lacs

Those of you who thinks this is a good investment or quick money making
business why not try this?

This one comes with 5 years warranty:
A project coming up in Carazalem (on old St.Inez -Dona Paula Road, close to
Miramar/Carazalem beach) by a reputed non-Goan Co. called Gera (Poona based I
think). They also have almost ready project (business/offices etc) at Patto
Plaza-near Bus Stand Panaji)
The project will be ready in about 21 months.
8 floor building with over 200 apts with all modern amenities plus this..
Jacuzzi, Party Lawn, Guest Parking, Terrace walkway, viewing deck/ seating on
8th floor etc.(common for all).

Interested?
Price ranges from Rs.40K to 50K/sqMtr depending upon the floor and view
2BHK area 114-126
3BHK 148 -159

Yet there is another project coming by Kamat Construction again is of 8 floor,
on the same road (one phase nearly completed) 2 bed (116 area etc) rate
Rs.37K/sqmts roughly Rs.43 lacs (At Kamat's the same rate was Rs.35K in
June/July this year )

There are few other project coming in that area closer to beach etc by Models,
Devanshree etc etc price tag around 50 lacs, project not fully completed yet
some will take at least another 1 year but all apts sold out.

Few days back, there was land for sale around 325 area behind Holy Cross
Shrine, Bambolim the asking price was Rs.6500/sqmtrs
i.e. about Rs. 21 Lacs

There are lots of brits coming to Macau with the advent of the casino boom. But

[Goanet] My interest in human anatomy

2007-10-27 Thread Cecil Pinto
My interest in human anatomy
Your heart may be in the right spot but is your Grafenberg?
By Cecil Pinto

Some seven years back my wife had to have a gall bladder operation.
The doctor explained to us what the problem was and what the surgery
involved. Being the ever curious cat I went to the Internet to do my
own research on what exactly the gall bladder does and what is bile,
pancreas and the dreaded duodenum. Ok I can hear you chuckling. Yes
like everyone else, I learnt about all these things in school, but
what the hell, I forgot!

Unlike many other parents I'm not overly critical of our school and
educational system. In the end it works and we do churn out young
people with far greater knowledge and skills than those in the West.
But I do wish it was different. We are not educated on how to think
but rather taught how to memorize. We are taught the facts and trained
to 'by-heart' them until they are vomited onto the final exam paper.
And then we flush out our brain cells of all unneeded facts and
memorize fresh ones. If we were encouraged to make use of the facts we
memorized, and draw connections and conclusions at a young age itself,
I wouldn't have had to use the Internet to locate and learn about my
wife's gall bladder.

Before I go on about anatomy let me give you an example of our Biology
teacher in school. I cannot mention his name because he is still
living and quite a decent person actually. When all my teachers are
dead I will write my school day memoirs. So for convenience let's just
call him Sir Baptist.

"…and that is why we should brush our teeth twice a day and maintain
oral hygiene, else our teeth will decay and fall off."

"But Sir, what about animals. They don't brush their teeth, or floss.
How come their teeth don't fall off?"

"They eat certain herbs and roots in the forest that has the same
effect as toothpaste, to fight decay."

"Ok Sir, what about domestic animals?"

"They too eat plants from the neighborhood which have the same effect."

"But Sir, I have my pet dog Bonzo who is chained indoors all day."

"But surely you let him loose once in a way?"

"I take him on a leash for a walk twice a day Sir."

"That's when he eats the herbs! Anyone else got questions?"

"But Sir, I just take him around the garden. There are no herbs Sir,
just normal plants and weeds. And he doesn't eat any of them, just
sniffs around"

"Any other questions? Anyone?"

"But Sir you have not explained why Bonzo's teeth don't fall out!"

"Ok. How old is your Bonzo?"

"Four years old Sir"

"Well just you wait two more years and his teeth will fall out. Now
any other questions?"

As I said earlier I hold no ill will against my teachers, but
sometimes I wonder. If any of us did ok in life it was not because of
them but despite them. Of course there are some teachers I have
encountered who were inspiring and made us think and were meant to be
great teachers. They are beyond criticism. But most of the teachers we
had were misfits from some stream or the other who wound up as
teachers because they could not get a job in a nationalized bank.
Remember this was the time before call centres, travel agents,
computer instructors, DJs, ayurvedic masseurs, animal activists, real
estate agents, advertising reps, web page designers, private security
guards, etc - and so career options for the mediocre were pretty
limited.

So yes, we were taught in school about the duodenum, esophagus,
pituitary, thyroid, adrenal glands, spleen, lymphs and something
called a trachea. But beyond passing end of school year examinations
most of us, except those who were planning to take up medicine, didn't
bother to remember where these things were and what exactly they did.

See as you step into young adulthood there are much more important
things that take priority in bar arguments. Anatomy at that time was
more a discussion of mammary glands and female posteriors rather than
any internal organs like the vas deferens. What a vast difference from
then to now It's only when middle age looms that suddenly these terms
for internal organs suddenly become important and he who knows
dominates the bar room conversation.

Go to a place where young people congregate. A shop selling mobile
phones is as good as a cybercafe or a college canteen. Mention the
phrase, "Grey's Anatomy" and you will find they all know about the
award winning American primetime television medical drama and can name
the stars and the characters. Few will know about Dr. Henry Gray and
his pathbreaking "Gray's Anatomy" that introduced million of us to
superior, common and inferior arteries as well as ascending and
descending colons long before the Internet brought these to our
computer screen.

But in a way the new generation can be far more knowledgeable than
ours because of the fantastic research tools at their disposal. Pity
isn't it that they are more interested in which service provider gives
more free SMS and where they can download readymade class projects for
submissi

QUESTION: What are they going to check the lady teacher for ? Skin
under her finger nails, fluids that she might give ? If so this DNA
testing thing, is far more advanced in India than in England where DNA
was first discovered. Perhaps the Indian Government should offer help

[Goanet] Annual Goanetters Meet - 2007

2007-10-27 Thread Cecil Pinto

GoaNet Admin wrote:
Annual Goanetters Meet - 2007
Date: December 27, 2007
Time: 4:30pm
Venue: Foodland Restaurant & Bar
Miramar Residency
Panaji - Goa
Phone: +91 (832) 3292803, 2462326
For those not familiar with the location, the Foodland Restaurant is located
within the premises of the Miramar Residency, on the North side (right hand
side) of Dayanand Bandodkar Marg when headed towards Miramar from Panaji. It
is just before the Miramar traffic circle near Clube Gaspar Dias.

Cecil:
I suggest that maybe Frederick (or someone representing the GoaNet Admin
Team) meet the Foodland management in advance and sort of put together some
tables and chairs aside for the GoaNetters. Last time at the same venue we
all formed a circle of chairs in the adjoining lawn but soon had to shift
to the restaurant proper because they had to clear the lawn for some party.

Also it would help if the security guard at the entrance was informed about
the meeting so he could direct enquiries. Last time the boorish brothers
from Australia complained that they had difficulty finding the place as
there was no banner put up to welcome them. Some people?

GoaNet Admin:
All Goanetters are welcome to attend. Suggested items for the agenda
(subject to change):
* Feedback and suggestions regarding Goanet.
* What you like, and what you don't, on Goanet.
* Suggestions to take the Goanet project forward.
* A raising of hands on initiatives you could volunteer on (for Goanet).
* Brainstorming on how Goanet could more actively interact with the overall
community of residents in Goa and also its diaspora.
Please make further suggestions whether you plan to attend or not.

Cecil:
All that is fine but there has to be one person, maybe Fred again, who
takes charge of the meeting and sort of moderates. Last time the same
boorish and boring Australian brothers almost hijacked the meeting with
their aggressive attitudes and pre-historic opinions. One of them was not
even a GoaNetter and was extremely critical of GoaNet. Why exactly he
attended the meeting is beyond me. Fortunately there were sober, practical
and knowledgeable people like Kevin, Vivian, Ariosto and Miguel to steer
the meeting away from the petty fight the Australian duo wanted to turn it
into. It also helped that Herman and Viviana were there directly
representing GoaNet Admin.

I quite understanding wanting to bring along an interested non-GoaNetter.
It could be a spouse or a relative or friend or someone supportive of the
cause. But I can't understand the logic of bringing along someone who is
vehemently anti-GoaNet. We have enough troublemakers among ourselves and
don't need self declared 'outsiders' (outside of GoaNet) to rake trouble.
Especially not I-have-my-agenda-to-shove-down-your-throat uncouth boors
from Down Under.

--

GoaNet Admin:
We each buy our own drinks and/or food and go around introducing ourselves
to the group. In the past we have enjoyed meeting Goanetters - putting faces
to names, some of whom have been our cyber adversarial debaters and members
of Goanet Admin/Moderators/Volunteers.

Cecil:
In fact that's the main reason I have been attending these meetings
recently - putting faces to names. Here, off the top of my mind, are some
people I met first time face to face at a GoaNet annual meeting. Four years
back I met Edward Verdes who I had corresponded with extensively earlier.
Three years back I met the elusive VM, the vibrant Melinda, and Vincent
from Bangalore. Two years back I met Anibel, my fellow Aldonkar, and also
the fantastic writer Veena Patwardhan. Last year I met Kevin Saldanha. So
many wonderful people. It's always a pleasure meeting in real life someone
you have only known as a name and e-mail address.

Since the GoaNet Admin Team cannot set up rules for the meeting I think we
should take it upon ourselves to make sure we bring along people who know
of GoaNet and want to be 'insiders' instead of critical 'outsiders' looking
in - like the crude Australian Goan siblings last year.

Cheers!

Cecil

I'm so disheartened by this story. On the one hand if
the woman in question did molest this child then she
has to pay the full penalty under the law.

On the other hand, it seems to have brought to the
fore all the misogynistic assumptions made by our
society.

In our Goan society, where getting married and having
children is the norm, women who fail to fulfill this
role designated for them are reviled. They are the but
of all jokes, with special pejorative terms like
"beatul" and "azudre" coined for them. I attended a
tiatre about two years ago which was replete with such
abuses hurled at one of the "unmarried" characters in
the play, and the crowd churlishly cheered on in
agreement.

Much has been made of the fact that this woman is a 40
year old spinster. Pedophilia is not a disease born
out of deprivation but a sickness of the mind, and
hence a 40 year old married woman with 10 children
could be just as susceptible to it as a unmarried 40
year old.

Secondly, why is the assumption made that the spinster
is a virgin. Could she not be engaged in a healthy
sexual relationship with a man outside of marriage?
How will an "examination of her body" prove "assault"
on the child? Is this the sort of evidence we are
depending on to prove our cases in Goa these days? If
so, I am afraid very afraid for our society.

Re: [Goanet] [goanet]Vol 2, Issue 958_Learn Konkani, the Romi Way.

2007-10-27 Thread Venantius Pinto
Dear Miguel,
I am not sure what the delineation of interest is towards Romi in the
Saraswat community. Are the educators, scientists, doctors, and those
of the highly logical spectrum, comfortable with giving it
consideration, or do they not care a whit? Are the ones who got their
jobs on account of their Nagari credentials still harboring
antipathies towards Romi? Is there anyone of any significance who is
comfortable with having Romi accorded any respect. Or is it kaam zalem
voiz melo syndrome? Is there no one? I know it sounds like I am asking
this question in a wind tunnel. But is there an abject paucity of
witnesses here?

As a cohesive social group. the Saraswats through the centuries have
striven towards attaining and obtaining the best, considering their
pointed acumen and perseverance in all matters concerning
opportunity, business and scholarship. However, quite often those who
are successful and of acute intelligence, tend to leave their flanks
uncovered; perhaps out of sheer confidence or an inability to imagine
they could be surprised. In India, this is particularly striking among
those who have taken their measures of modernity and its possibilities
to their heads; seeing that it suits them rather well. So for the
present, the script issue does not bother the movers and shakers,
whereas the others who are not part of the elite among the same, are
simply minding their business. As high achievers, they have divined,
that the Antruzian folks have little on them beautiful people. Recent
modernity in a nutshell, with a slice of good old feudalism. This is a
prerogative of those who shape the corridors of feudal rectitude,
turning them into labyrinths of power politics. Many Christians too
are only happy to be accepted and garlanded as lost wayward siblings
-- who have not culturally strayed too far; other than by eating of
the abominable choris pau. And occasionally prattling the ta, tha, ti,
thi, tu, thu, the, thai, tho, tau/thau, etc., while quizzically
contemplating when to resort to the long or short u/uu. For those of
us who know the Nagari in its specificifies, the Romi still
contributes to making the Konkani firmament more complete.

As a group they have great faculties for observation, and a phenomenal
talent for collective dialectics. But anticipating change is a whole
different matter. It is the weakest thinkers (usually the politicians)
in terms of ideas, among any community who take the strongest, to the
pastures that precipitately slope over linguistic cliffs. At some
point in the bewitchment the view get clearer as one is in free fall.
I do hope that behind the scenes the good ones among our brethern will
broach this topic with the fearless leaders. If for no other reason
than for resaons of self love as opposed to self hatred, to increase
financial potential and as smart politics. Goa neds smart investments
andfor those with capital Romi affords a host of possibilities.***

You also raised two pertinent thoughts -- the first one on knowing!
Know thyself -- but what can be worse than someone else knowing your
mind. That is pure nakedness of being. I lived in the midst of a Hindu
family, for about five years. This was but one strand in a critical
part of in my development, with the religion, social and cultural
mores of my ancestors. Basically, I learnt a lot about people and the
dynamics of protecting ones interests. Secondly, people have to
understand that if an independent MLA could be so influential in 1987,
it also means that other independent MLAs or those with some spine
could up the ante. But I presume, its easier to stay as milquetoasts,
or simply as nankatais.

*** I came across this historical piece by Teotonio R. de Souza. It
contains the kind of information that all should become familiar with.
I mean all Goans -- Hindus, Christians. Muslims, Sikhs, and martians
when they land in Goa. It is related to entrepreneurship, and has much
relevance to us today. This piece is something that Hindus should see
as extolling their positives -- in addition to their ability to thrive
in any circumstance, and for Christians to consider future
possibilities in growth by dropping their laissez-faire attitude. And
pass the message on so all may share in what Goa can still be for all
of us, and not just for the smooth skinned, beautiful people.

Dear all,

There is no firm count of Goan families in the San Diego area, but
approximately 50 families are
estimated to live in the area. All have been directly or indirectly
impacted by the fires.
Fortunately, reports coming in suggest they have found temporary housing,
including assistance
from city, county, state, federal agencies, and local non-profits.
Long-term the evacuees will
face hardship, see

People in Southern California have rallied together and helped. The Goan
community in Los Angeles,
Orange County, San Diego are to be admired for reaching out and providing
help and accomodation.
Others from outside the area have also offered to help, including

2007-10-27 Thread Floriano - Goa Suraj Party
Well, Well, Well,
Anamika's post makes very interesting reading.

First of, let me say that you are not a non-entity, atleast any more.
Because you have melted (should I say?) some colder than ice, political ice
in Goa.

And cheers for doing the penance of standing in a queu to vote for Manohar
Parrikar's BJP. And I do hope that you are presently the most busy-bee
canvassing among family and friends to vote for Wilfred Mesquita who has
rebounded like a ricocheting bullet into the BJP fold from the diametrically
opposite SGF which he helped to form and work for. If, by your standards,
this is a political virtue, than I must stop attacking this key-board and
go home to attend to some worthwhile matters.

Like you, I too had thought 'the world' about Manohar Parrikar, he being
known to me, being a semi-Mapxem-kar et al.
And I had thought that Goa was stuck in his hands forever, when he did the
back-stabbing trick on Sardinha, which BTW Sardinha deserved. But then we
Goans got to see Manohar's true colours. By all means, he is a good
administrator or he seems to give that impression. But after seeing his type
of administration, it was apparent that he needed to go back to wrming
school benches again. He is the most conceited administrator I have come
across, who wants to do things his own way and by himself. He cannot govern
through decentralised governance. Example: During IFFI 2004, it is said
that Manohar Parrikar used to take rounds to supervise the works even at 2
in the mornings. A good administrator does not do that. A good administrator
comes to and leaves his office on time. All he does is to see that the
orders are followed by all and sundry. Does the administrator removes a
wrongly parked motor bike and flings it to damage it, like he did at the
Kala Academy pre IFFI-2004???

Non Corrupt you say?? Look at the one-time settlements of EDC and who the
beneficiaries are. Look at the 24 crores of renovation expenses of Kala
Academy. Look at the grossly inflated cost of the IFFI-2004. Look at the
grossly inflated cost of the Curjuem bridge. Look at the grossly inflated
cost of INOX. Maybe he hasn't taken the money himself. But he looted Goans
through his contractors and consultants for kick-backs for his party.

Is he really a foe of Babush Monserrate and Miccky Pacheco as he wants us to
believe??

Manohar Parrikar, in my qualified view, has blown what was working for him.
Goa needed a change. He was the pioneer who could being about that change. I
do agree with you that he is different than all other politicos put
together. But when one is given a chance, or should I say when one grabs a
chance to do something different, how come he blows it away?

Let me tell you one more thing about Manohar. He is so obsessed with his own
capabilities, that he is totally blinded when it comes to recognising the
capabilities of others, especially the subordinates. When Babush resigned and
went to the Congress, Manohar should have taken it in his stride and sit
back to watch the show. The People of Goa would have brought him back wioth
renewed strenght. But No! He didn't have the patience. He moved heaven and
earth, even resorted to forgery (Filipe Neri's case), the Mandarin Hotel
mess-up, The Governor's blockade et al. This has discreditted him more than
anything else.

Using gullible catholics like Wilfred Mesquita is his agenda. There is not a
single more bigotted and perverted RSS minded Goan in Goa than Manohar
Parrikar. He is the ultimate poison which he wants to project as honey.
Gullible you!

We do not need these super IIT'ans with inflated egos to run ther simple
administration of a spec of a state which is Goa. We need sensible Goans who
can think right and act tough when it is required. Why I say this is because
Manohar went into the specifics of getting a bureaucrat red-handed caught
whilst taking bribe. And what he did was to kick him upstairs with a
promotion instead of giving him the sack.

Is this Manohar Parrikar that you want to fall in love with that makes you
stand in an endless queue with a baby hanging in your arms to vote for ???

I am also in politics but I hate to say that what Manohar did with the GDF
(Goa Democratic Front) was a sin. This has eliminated him from the race to
be Goa's CM once again. And if he does become that, Goa and Goans will be
most unfortunate even if that period is stunted.

examples:

The RC church has collected billions of dollars from
gullible folks for the purpose of charity and
alleviating human suffering, and used that money to
buy justice

RESPONSE: This thread is re the HJS exhibition in Goa. What relevance does
the exhibition have with the RC church?? It appears you are raising the
issue of the RC church into this debate because you are responding to an
individual with a Catholic name - Jason Keith Fernandes!
If the respondents have Hindu sounding names you call them communists,
pseudo-secularists and other odd names.

None of the paedophiles have ever been punished

RESPONSE: None?? To score brownie points are you going to invent facts?
Read a story of a few hours ago:
http://www.newsday.com/news/local/wire/newyork/ny-bc-ny--priest-abuse1025oct25,0,3611627.story

Surely you know how to Google!!

As regards freedom of speech I consider it absolute.
everyone has a right to say freely what one wants,
and you by the same token have a right to protest.

RESPONSE: Really? So when Gadgil, Sabnis, FN, Miguel and others protested
the exhibition why did you have to demonize the individuals as above?

I have merely tried to expose the hypocrisy and the
arrogant self righteous attitude of a few vocal
posters on Goanet who selectively target the Hindutva
organizations.

RESPONSE: Several months ago I labelled your writings as self-righteous. Now
you want to turn around and term others as self-righteous.

If you have carefully read my posts on Goanet, I have
never defended all that the HJS or the RSS does.

RESPONSE: As I said at the start.your commentary is all over the map.
You want to support the HJS but you are afraid of being seen as a supporter
of the HJS. Are you ashamed to explicitly state you support the HJS??

For several months almost every message from Mario Goveia was about the US
war in Iraq. Irrespective what the original thread was about, he would draw
inferences and relationships to the war. There was nothing else he could
write about.

Similarly, we now have Albert who can only write about "God" with ocassional
criticism of the Catholic Church in Goa. There is nothing else he can write
about.

Both self-righteous individuals!!

Now, are you going to be objective in what you write or continue with the
same shenahi - when you respond to a poster (with a Catholic name) on any
issue, you will bring up paedophilia in the Catholic Churchand when you
respond to a poster (with a Hindu name) on any issue, you will shout
communist, pseudo-secular, etc... while at the same time claiming that
"everyone has a right to say freely what one wants".

Whats it gonna be?

created.

PIB, New Delhi, Oct 25: The first meeting of the Organizing Committee for
IFFI-2007 was held today under the Chairmanship of Shri P. R. Dasmunsi,
Union Minister of Information & Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs. The
meeting deliberated on the various issues related to IFFI-2007 and reviewed
the level of preparedness for Event. In his remarks, Shri Dasmunsi said
that over the years the Festival has gone from strength to strength and our
endeavour has been to make it still better. He lauded the role and
suggestions of film industry in raising the standard of the Festival over
time.

The Organizing Committee took the under noted major decisions:

The opening and closing functions will be simple and elegant in keeping with
the practice in most of the prestigious international film festivals. The
focus will be on the opening film and closing films. There will be no
entertainment programme at these functions. The awards ceremony will be held
at the closing function. This would be followed by the screening of the
closing film.

Two new theatres with a seating capacity of 300 seats are being built in the
Festival Complex. Two public theatres are being upgraded and provided with
the latest projection facilities thereby making another 400 seats available
for the festival.

The total number of delegates that may be registered has been fixed in
proportion to the availability of theatre seats. The Government of Goa has
been requested to screen the applications of local delegates and forward
them to DFF for final approval.

The registration system for all delegates has been made completely on-line.
Delegate cards will be prepared well in advance so that there are no long
queues at the registration counter.

For the first time a ticketing system has been introduced whereby every
delegate will have to book in advance for any films that he/she would like
to see. A maximum of 3 tickets for every delegate and 5 for every media
person will be issued. The delegate registration fee for late registration
has been considerably enhanced to Rs. 1000/-. Students, will however, be
given a concession of 50%.

The Indian Panorama will have 21 features and 15 non-feature films selected
by a peer Jury headed by Shri K.S. Sethumadhavan, and Shri Arun Khopkar
respectively. Indian Retrospectives will showcase Retrospective on the
films of Tapan Sinha and Vijay Anand. Homages section will focus on
Cinematographer K.K. Mahajan, Actress Vanamala Devi and Music Director O.P.
Nayyar.

Among the highlights of foreign section are, 14 feature films from Asia,
Africa and Latin America in the Competition Section. Cinema of the World
will have About 60 award winning feature films from 40 countries. Master
Classes, Technical Retrospective. Foreign Retrospectives and Country Focus
will be the other features of IFFI-07. For the first time, two programmers
from the Goa Govt. will be curating for IFFI with two separate sections
called - `India 60' which will celebrate India's 60th anniversary with three
feature films and two documentary films and a retrospective package on

seminar and master class on animation and visual effects. CII will organize
'The Big Picture' Conference.

A new initiative is being undertaken by NFDC in partnership with DFF where
international consultants and experts will advise and work with selected
film makers to develop scripts of international quality.

Goans urged to speak in Konkani, support writers

HERALD CORRESPONDENT

PORVORIM, OCT 26 – Former principal of St Xavier’s College
Fr Antimo Gomes has appealed to Goans to speak in Konkani and to support
Konkani writers by purchasing their books.

He was addressing a function organized by the Thomas Stephens Konkani Kendr to
award the Antonio Pereira Konknni Purosker to B E Mendes.

“Konknni was introduced in the Primary school after Liberation, but it did not
receive the required support from the government during the initial years.
Goans should not feel ashamed to speak their mother tongue Konkani and should
encourage the Konkani writers by purchasing their books,” remarked Fr Gomes.

Antonio Pereira Konknni Purosker, which consists of a cheque for Rs 25,000, a
memento and a shawl, was awarded to Mendes in recognition of the services
rendered by him in the field of Konkani literature.

In his speech, Mendes said he has so far written around 20 books in Konknni and
he used to visit Goan houses in Bombay
from Colaba to Borivali to sell Konkani books.

Earlier in his welcome address, Fr Pratap Naik informed that the Antonio
Pereira Konknni Puroskar is presented each year to Konkani writers, musicians,
etc, who have been residing in Goa for the
last 15 years and have done appreciable work during their lifetime.

Fr Naik, however, lamented that the poor attendance at the function only
indicated that Konkani language did not get the respect it deserved from the
people in the State.

On the occasion, Mendes released the 13th Research journal published by Thomas
Stephens Kendra.

[Goanet] Overnight Trek to Dudhsagar Falls on Sunday

2007-10-27 Thread Clinton Vaz

Hello Goanetters,

Last week's trek did not materialize as there was a derailment of a
train at the Dudhsagar Sector, so we look forward to trekking this
weekend. We have about 9 participants so far, and I'm soon going to
close participation as i don't want a huge group as the personal touch
is lost otherwise.

Tomorrow, I'll be organizing an overnight trek to Dudhsagar Falls on the
border of Goa and Karnataka. We leave tomorrow (sunday) afternoon around
1pm from Margao, South Goa to Collem by train and then will be hiking
3.5 hrs to the falls. We will camp at the foot of the falls, getting
back only the next (monday) afternoon back to Margao.

Those interested should email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or call me on
+919890936828 to confirm participation and get the travel tips & packing
list for this trek latest by 9am, Sunday morning. There is a
participation fee of 250 which includes transport + entrance to the
Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary.

While WildGoa takes all precautions to avoid accidents and incidents (we
have a clean track record!), everybody participates at their own risk.

Have a nice day,

[Goanet] The Tehelka expose

2007-10-27 Thread Vidyadhar Gadgil
Today's media has the usual hilarious statements by the Sangh
Parivar chappies on the Gujarat expose (see
http://www.tehelka.com/story_main35.asp?filename=Ne031107gujrat_sec.asp,
if you haven't already) -- see, for example, Ravi Shankar Prasad's
rubbish. The blog below does a good analysis of the perspective
within which we now view news, and how the horrific details that
have been revealed, and what they say about us a society, can get
lost amidst all this.

As Tarun Tejpal says in his editorial: "Read. And be afraid."

Tehelka issues should be available on the stands today. If they
are sold out (bought up by those who do not wish this to get any
publicity), place orders with your newsagents. And, if you think
this is paranoid, Aaj Tak, IBN-7/CNN-IBN and NDTV have been asked
to switch off by government forcibly in Gujarat since 25.10.07
evening from 7:30 pm. There is a order
issued from District Magistrate and District
Election Officer, Ahmedabad Mr Dhananjay Dwivedi
dated 26.10.07, it states that: From 7:30 onwards
dated 25.10.07, there are programmes like
"Tehelka-Aaj Tak Khulasa", "Operation kalank" and
"Gujarat ka sach" being telecast on Aaj Tak and
IBN7 depicting visuals and statements of people
pertaining to 2002 communal riots. As per clause
5 of the cable tv network regulation, 1995, no
entity can broadcast or rebroadcast any
programme, which is not as per programming code.

The Gujarat tehelka

Moments after 7 pm yesterday, we knew the Gujarat riots formed the
subject
matter of the latest *Tehelka*
expose.
And, without sitting through the television coverage on Aaj Tak and
Headlines Today, you knew broadly what the reaction was going to
be. [To
segue for a moment into a side issue, I had every intention of sitting
through the television coverage—but inside of the first half hour,
I gave
up; there is something faintly obscene about a 'special report' on an
important issue being broken down into four minute chunks of
repetitive
sound bytes, sandwiched between 10 minute spells—I timed it—of
advertisements.]

Scanning blogs, comments on message boards (always a traumatic
experience;
on an issue of this importance, even more so) and even messages on
this
forum, I am not disappointed: the reaction is exactly on the lines
I had
anticipated. These are, broadly, the points being made:

1. Why now, just before the Gujarat elections? This proves the
expose is the
handiwork of the Congress. 2. Why this riot? Why not other,
earlier riots
that have taken place during various Congress governments? This
proves the
media is partisan. 3. Why is inordinate fuss kicked up whenever an
incident
involves Hindus, while no one says anything when the victims are
Hindus?
This proves the media is pseudo-secular (or, *gag*, p-sec). 4. Whyfor?
Outside of selling many copies of Tehelka (and providing an
advertising
windfall for two television channels), what good will it do to
rake over the
past? 5. How can you take this seriously? The media spins the news
depending
on its political affiliations, so what are we to believe?

the evacuees will

[Goanet] Produce title deeds for Dabolim, Navy told

2007-10-27 Thread Pamela D'Mello

Produce title deeds for Dabolim, Navy told

By Pamela D'Mello
The Asian Age

Panaji, Oct 26: Stepping up pressure on the navy, Goa rajya sabha legislator
Shantaram Naik has asked the navy to produce title deeds for 1687 acres of
land around Dabolim airport --- which he said actually belongs to the state
government.

Ownership of Goa's lone Dabolim airport has become contentious since Goa's
bustling tourism industry's expansion plans finds itself bogged down in
land disputes with the navy.

Mr Naik, a member of a prime minister appointed committee to negotiate Goa's
vexed airport issue, said the issue of ownership repeatedly came up. State
officials were asked to investigate land title and report to the committee.

A brewing dispute over Dabolim's land ownerhship cropped up again after
international consultants said a new aiport was unviable, and would require
24 million passeners. Dabolim currently handles 2 million and projections
for 2020 would rise to 6 million.

Faced with a no-win situation, Goa legislators are increasingly questioning
the navy's claim to Dabolim. Small expansions proposed by AAI and state
authorities have run into quibbles over land, even as existing
infrastructure is stretched to its limits. A small terminal handles 4000
passengers a day, 38 domestic flights daily and 31 charters a week.

Mr Naik claims no title deed exists since the land was never transferred to
the navy. "It is unfair that Goa should have to keep asking for airport
land, that actually belongs to it", he said.

When raised as a question in parliament, the then defence minister said
dabolim airport had been handed over to the ministry of defence by an order
of the then military governor, following an ouster of Portuguese forces by
Indian armed forces in 1961. The ministry of defence accordingly claims
title of 1687.51 acres of land in Dabolim airport since April 1962, the

[Goanet] Six Lanes to Hell

2007-10-27 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar

To Goanet -

The usual political suspects in Goa have thrown their weight behind the
creation of a new 6-lane highway. Like the proposed Special Ghati Zones
this, too, is a terrible mistake.

You ought to ask yourself who exactly is supporting these projects. At the
head of the list is the leading corruptician (my portmanteau word for the
corrupt politician) of our times, Dayanand Narvekar.

We should be thinking of ways to reduce motorized traffic and curtail our
carbon emissions, not increase them. Everyone talks about the need for
spanking new roads. Nobody talks about cultivating road manners and road
culture, something that would enhance the quality of life much more than the
pouring of fresh asphalt. The 6-lane highway will transform Goa - coastal
Goa, at any rate - into one indistinguishable contiguous urban mass. The
damage would be incalculable and irreversible.

Among the several factors that has placed Goa on the fast track to doom is
its easy accessibility, particularly in the past 5 years. The Dilli savage
now has a choice of flights from sunrise until sunset. A slew of trains is
now on offer for the ghati from Bihar or AP. Getting into Goa has never
been easier. It is akin to having the doors of your house open and
unguarded at all times. With the 6-lane highway we will have knocked down
the walls, too.

Warm regards,

The visit of the bishop of Goa to Sao Francisco should not have figured in the

no need for anyone to apologies for writing against his visit. Did the Bishop
tender his apology when he insulted the elected representatives of Goa ,I mean
MLAs and ministers when they were invited for a dinner on Christmas day?

67-
yr-old held for raping minor

NT News Service

Quepem, Oct 26 The Quepem police today arrested a 67 year
old person on charges of raping an eleven year old girl from Ambaulim, Quepem.
The accused, Juze Cardozo, was produced before the First Class Judicial
Magistrate Quepem today and remanded to seven-day police custody.

According to the Quepem police, the accused who happens to
be the neighbour of the victim, used to lure the girl into entering his house
by offering her chocolates and sweets while she was on her way to school. Once
inside, the accused would force her into submission and sexually molest her.
The police said that the victim’s molestation was possibly going on since last
almost two months until the incident came to light yesterday after the victim’s
school teacher suspected something fishy following her frequent absence from
school and informed her mother.

Upon interrogation by her mother, the victim charged Cardozo with
sexually molesting her, following which a complaint was lodged with the Quepem
police. Acting swiftly, the police nabbed the accused from his house and
arrested him. An offence has been registered against Cardozo under Sec 376 of
the IPC and Sec 8 of the Goa Children’s Act 2003. Quepem PI Mr Naresh Mhamal is
conducting further investigations.

Tuition teacher arrested for sexual assault on
9-year-old

BY HERALD REPORTER

MARGAO, OCT 26 — The Colva police on Friday evening
arrested the 40-year-old female tuition teacher in connection with the sexual
assault on a 9-year-old boy at Benaulim.

The teacher was taken into custody by the police after her bail application was
rejected by the Children’s Court this evening.

Colva PI C L Patel told Herald that the lady teacher was referred for medical
examination to the Goa
 Medical College
and hospital, Bambolim soon after her arrest.

She has been arrested under section 8 (2) of the Goa Children’s Act and section
377 of the Indian Penal Code for unnatural sex.

PI Patel said the police are also investigating into a complaint lodged by
another boy, who also used to take tuitions with the accused teacher.

The Colva police had registered a case against the teacher three days ago after
the mother of the 9-year old victim boy complained of pain in his private part.

Colva police are further investigating.

Our Panjim reporter adds: The Children’s Court on Friday rejected the
anticipatory bail application of the 40-year-old tuition teacher who is alleged
to have assaulted her 9-year-old student.

The accused was arrested immediately after her anticipatory bail application
was rejected even as 100-odd supporters stood outside the Court for the
verdict.

A case was registered against her under Section 377 (unnatural sex) of IPC and
section 8(2) of the Goa Children’s Act after the boy complaint to his mother.

The President of the Children’s Court Nutan Sardessai rejected the anticipatory
bail plea pointing out that accused had avoided the arrest for three days.

The state was represented by Public Prosecutor Pratima Verenkar.

[Goanet] Padre Pio

2007-10-27 Thread edward desilva
Hi All,

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id=489428&in_page_id=1811
An Italian monk who became the country's best-loved saint after being
canonised by Pope John Paul II and who claimed to suffer stigmata or the wounds
of Christ was a fake who used carbolic acid, according to a controversial new
book.
Padre Pio, who died in 1968 and who was canonized in 2002, claimed to have
first suffered the stigmata – holes in his hands and feet where nails pierced
Christ at the Crucifixion – since he was a young priest aged 24. He enjoyed a
massive following with thousands visiting him and even today nearly 30 years
after his death he has a millions of devotees around the world and he is
especially popular with Italian celebrities such as Sophia Loren and Andrea
Bocelli. However a new book called "The Other Christ: Padre Pio and the Italy
of the 19th Century" by historian Sergio Luzzatto claims that the wounds were
self created using carbolic acid and he claims to have found documentary
evidence to prove it in the Vatican's secret archives. A letter he has
discovered from a pharmacist called Maria De Vito, 28, who had made a
pilgrimage in 1919 to see Padre Pio at his monastery at San Giovanni Rotondo
near Foggia, southern Italy. In the document Maria wrote: "I was an
admirer of Padre Pio and met him for the first time in July 1919. I was there
for a month and had the opportunity to see him close hand several times and I
always had an excellent opinion of him.
"The eve of my departure for Foggia, Padre Pio called me to one side and in
great secrecy and asking me not to tell his fellow brothers gave me personally
an empty bottle he asked me to act as a chauffeur take it back from Foggia to
San Giovanni Rotondo with four grams of pure carbolic acid. "He explained
that the acid was for disinfecting syringes for injections and he also asked
for other medicines such as Valda tablets." The document added that a month
later a further request arrived from Padre Pio in which he asked for four grams
of veratrine (painkiller) which was not available in her pharmacy so she asked
her cousin who refused because he feared it was being used for faking his
stigmata. The book highlights that the testimony was presented to the Vatican
by the local archbishop Pasquale Gagliardi who was an enemy of Padre Pio and
who always suspected that the wounds were self inflicted with acid and then
perfumed with cologne. However the Vatican dismissed
the documents after carrying out their own investigations which ruled that the
wounds were not caused by "external forces." The Catholic Anti-Defamation
League have hit back at the author of the book, historian Sergio Luzzatto,
saying: "We would like to remind Mr Luzzatto that according to Catholic
doctrine, canonisation carries with it papal infallibility."

Re: [Goanet] Goanet Digest, Vol 2, Issue 929_Should we take care of our parent

2007-10-27 Thread Venantius Pinto
Dear Edward,
That Gibran reference can be inadvertently read too literally. I hope you
were not doing that. It is more of a parable and as such must be approached
in a "parabolic" way (what goes around comes around scenarios)." We did not
choose our births, neither did our parents us, nor were all parents in our
time (and even now) blessed with an understanding of market forces, working
25 years in the Middle East, had other great jobs, invested in hedge funds,
understood market volatility, or raise children to be bankers. My mother for
instance has no reason not to hope. She received a certain amount of
education (very little in fact), a lot of faith in truth and justice, and
the belief that things all wok out. Most of these things did not turn out
the way she thought it would. But what she has is us, and we are three
relatively quite but tough assed kids. She has only realized that recently
-- now that she sees that we never hurt anyone, are there for her, work
things out among ourselves even one of us messes things up for the other
two. This she sees when she contrasts her existence against others. She
knows we are there for her and it strengthens her. She does not cling.
Perhaps that may be the situation with others.

There are very few people who I can say for sure, I mean be a 100 percent
certain that they can live by themselves even if they had all the money in
the world and people to take care of them such as assisted living in any
variation. There are elders who believe that the children should be there
for them; and these days care can take many forms. To my knowledge, in many
of these cases, those parents put in an inordinate amount for their
children; and those children I doubt would have enjoyed the success they do,
if not for those Goan working stiffs (their parents). So although, the
expectations, as seen from the lens of modernity may appear a bit askew, we
have to look at it as a parcel of our pathos. Hopefully, the ones who look
forward to not imposing or concerning their children -- will not expect the
same from their children, nor hold it out against them, if in their own
latter years the same thoughts of being looking after impinge upon their
independent consciousnesses.

For a writer who write simply Khalil Gibran can be a hard read. He also says
"Stand together, yet not too close together; for the oak and the cypress
grow not in each others shadow." We used this on our wedding invite, along
with other snippets of text. But imagine the disaster if one reads this
piece to mean do what you please. For most it would not work out.

the only way to God.

There are enough organised religions out there which condemn all other faiths
as being "pagan" or in league with the devil. If you took some time and delved
into the religions you will see them for what they are. But if you have NO

Konkani flavour in other languages too
THE HINDU:Friday, Oct 26, 2007
M. Raghuram
Prathistan will take up translation of nine books
15 short-story collections among those to
be taken up for transliteration
BANGALORE: In a move to popularise Konkani literature in languages such as
Hindi, English and Malayalam, the Konkani Bhas Ani Samskriti Prathistan, an
apex body of Konkani literature, will take up a series of translation as well
as transliteration works of Konkani masters.
Sharing the information with The Hindu, the prathistan convener Basti Vaman
Shenoy told that there was a rich treasure of literature in Konkani written in
Devanagari, Kannada, Roman and Malayalam scripts.
Mr. Shenoy was in the city to formalise the translation work with some of the
well-known scholars of Konkani, Hindi and English here.
He said initially the prathistan would take up nine books for translation, and
three books and 15 short-story collections of young authors for transliteration.
Mr. Shenoy said a committee that was formed to suggest the books had identified
nine books, including those of “Rashtrakavi” Manjeshwar Govinda Pai that had
been published in Konkani, Malayalam and Kannada, which would be translated
into Hindi by Sunithi Bai from Kochi.
Biography
“Dinakarana Kavanagalu”, which is in Kannada, will be translated into Konkani
by S.M. Krishna Rao of Bangalore. Mr. Rao will also be translating a Konkani
biography of T.M.A. Pai into English and Kannada.
Jawaharlal Nehru’s “Discovery of India” will be translated into Konkani by
Kiran Budkulay of Goa.
Special works
Two special works on Konkani “Shabdakosh” (dictionary) and Konkani “Parichay
Kosh” (a bio-register) had also been taken up by the prathistan.
Well-known Konkani and English scholars such as Tanaji Halarnkar of Goa and M.
Madhav Pai of Shimoga were working on these two programmes, Mr. Shenoy said.
A book on Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya which is in Konkani will be translated into
English and Kannada by Jyotsna Kamath of Bangalore. A collection of essays in
Konkani written by Ravindra Kelekar and also a novel by him “Velevayleo Ghulo”
would be translated from Konkani to English and Kannada, he said.
Three major books written by well-known novelists in Konkani — A.T. Lobo (“Tum
Baro Za”), J.S. Alvares (“Angel”) and V.J.P. Saldanha (“Moga Maka Shikay”) —
will be taken up for transliteration.
In another project the prathistan will take up transliteration of 15
short-story collections of authors who have recently started writing Konkani
literature.
Mr. Shenoy said the Vishwa Konkani Sahitya Akademi would publish all these
books in phases.

[Goanet] Are Goan Politicians Using SEZs to make a fast buck? Is Goa ready for SEZs?

2007-10-27 Thread cedrico dacosta
Are Goan Politicians Using SEZs for making a fast buck?

Question on question -- ?

Is Goa ready for SEZs? Well, a lot has been written and said and spoken about
the latest medium of corruption that is introduced by the Goa Government and
its crooked Ministers -- The SEZs!

The Issue:

It is alledged that there has been a huge level of corruption in the allocation
of space in the SEZ areas. -- Understandable! Where ever there is a land deal,
the Ministers both at the local and the national level have always tried their
best to make a commission (read bribe) over the sale of land and space.

Why this happens:

Historically in Goa, every and any politician has got away with mass scale
corruption. Check the cases pending against any of the current and past
MLAs/Ministers. Currently almost all of the Digamber Kamat ministry is made up
of tainted ministers, including Digamber kamat himself...so what better do we
expect? from whom?

Is Goa ready for SEZs?

Goa, currently is struggling with its poor infrastructure and not much is being
done to aleviate the sufferings of the common man (read aam aadmi). Tourism,
the next big industry in Goa that will help the state economically is being
totally neglected. Observe the world over how tourist destinations have been
promoted by their governments. In the past tenure of Dr Wilfred Dsouza, he
couldnt even rid the Candolim beach of the River princess...today Dr Wilfred D
souza is history, but see the damage he did by being an incompetent tourism
minister, or the other former tourism ministers. Not much has been done to
improve the facilities and the infrastructure to help grow the tourism industry.

Today, the Goa government and the various cunning politicians associated with
the current dispensation are in a hurry to sell Goa n make a commission. The
new mantra is SEZs -- it is nothing, but yet another medium to sell Goa to the
highest bidder to outsiders.

The Goa of today is strugling to keep up to its growing demands in terms of
water and electricityand although senior Politicians like Francisco
Sardinha with an eye on the upcoming elections has declared that the Goa
government will not be responsible to provide water and electricity to the
companies setting up in the SEZs, only goes to show how the government will
sooner or later encourage more power thefts and scams like the expert Mauvin
Godinho is alleged to have done during his tenure as the power minister -- as
Parrikar and he will throw more light on the issue.

With a gala announcement and a lot of ribbon cutting the industrial unit at
verna was opened up -- but after almost 15 years of its set up, not much is
visible except the notable expansion of the Kesarval Motel, owned by Luzinho
Faleiro -- and the world knows what contributed to its growth.

SEZs are not harmful, in fact the world over special economic zones are a boon
to industrialisation and businesses...but at this moment, instead of
concentrating on improving the basic infrastructure in Goa like wider and more
better roads, highways, construction of more dams to tap the freely available
rain water and to control the large scale pollution done by minning, the
cunning foxes in the Goa government are trying to byte more than they can chew,
as they know the mantra that goes like ...make hay while the sun shines...and
they are not sure if they will retain their kodels when the sun rises the next
day morning!!! how disgusting this?

Goa doesnt even have a proper airport to accomodate large scale progress that
would happen vis a vis SEZs...It has been a year the proposed 500 Cr sanction
from the central government to expand Dabolim airport is yet to reach GOA,
while on the other hand an unsteady CM makes almost two trips a day to
Delhi-Goa and back.?/?

Take for example the fancied commercial capital of MARGAO -- the very
constituency represented by our CM for serval terms...Margao lies in
shambles...bad roads, failing electricity supply, gambling, prostitution,
robberies, parking spaces, lack of health care facilities are some of the basic
hardships that are faced by the public. Digamber Kamat boasts of musical
fountains and beautification projects like Ana Fonte, but what is the use of
providing a hairbrush to a bald man? A hungry populace needs bread not cake? a
dying man needs medicines not a guarantee that he/she would have a honourable
funeral?//

It is also very sad that the public in Goa is made to believe that everything
the Government does is for their good alone -- the press is biased and therein
the ruling parties choke the voice of the people...the information spread
through a controlled press is not people centric but politician
centric...reminds us of Salazarshahi!

The police force is controlled by the ruling parties to dance to their tunes,
peoples rebellions and revolts are crushed prematurely by using force. And if
the public puts up a brave and a strong front, some of its mem

-Perhaps, the only major bridge in Goa.
- Due to the war time/barge hit damages etc, some weight restriction were
imposed.
-All passengers were told to alight and only empty bus was allowed to cross the
bridge.
-All passengers including children were made to cross the bridge on foot and
catch the bus at the other end.
-As a child, while walking on the bridge JoeGoaUk used to tremble* when he sees
the water deep down through the crevices/gaps or large holes in the wooden
floor of the bridge.
-We only made use of the bridge once a year that’s during Old Goa Novenas.
- The bridge was in the news several times making headlines.
-There were several deaths reported at the bridge particularly of those workers
who worked there.
-There was strong rumour at the time that the ‘Bore Pul’ required human blood
to keep it going.
-As kids, we had the fear in us that ‘Ghantti’ come with the sack and takes
children away for the ‘Bore Pul’. Perhaps, we got it from our parents or
elders etc
-The bridge was operative, I think, until 1986 when CM Rane inaugurated the
new bridge on 27th Aug. 1986. see new bridge pic here

*JoeGoaUk has this phobia (Acrophobia)- fear of heights.
During his pre-school time, his class was located in a room next to the
sacristy (church). In his class room, there was a small staircase for the
priest to go up in the pulpit to give sermon. It is only about 6-7 steps but
his legs were trembling when he looked down. However, when he climbs up any
coconut trees for ‘addsoram’ he never looks down.
Any cure for this phobia?

Did you know?
In May 1998, in absence of any sign board or a barricade on the old Borim
bridge, two youth riding on their motor bike rode straight into the bridge and
plunged into the river?
One survived (rescued by the local fisherfolks), one died. Both of then were
Biharis and were heading for Quepem. Police then registered a case against PWD
for their negligence.

Why this bridge need to be saved or protected & how?
-It’s a part of our heritage/history.
-We can show our children/grandchildren
- Future generations
- Beautiful view from the bridge- Greenery, scenery , hills, valley, river etc
etc
See abv pic or watch the slide-show below
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoaukbridges/show/
- the bridge can be reconstructed, the missing/damaged portion etc and as foot
bridge
- Throw open to public and make it a tourists attraction.
-Let the locals make some business by outting up some stalls etc.
-Let all tourist buses make a stop there, with a guide who will give a breif
history of the bridge.

If we can save ‘The Massano de Amorim school building' (near Cine National)
which was built around 1940 why not this bridge?
Supporters of the above building say ‘So many children have passed their
primary education through the Massano de Amorim Escola since the 1940’s till
date. Thus the heritage school is part of our personal heritage’
JoeGoaUk Says: So many people (almost entire south Goa) passed through the old
Borim bridge on foot until 1986. Thus the bridge is part of our heritage too.
Let's not wait till some private parties take it over or buys the nearby land
etc

There will be a short video clip which will be coming soon. In the mean time
try watching this slide show
http://www.flickr.com/photos/joegoaukbridges/show/

 Some Home Work:
-When was the old Borim bridge built?
- If you agree that the bridge needs to be protected, tell us in your own words
-why and how ?
- Do you have any other memories of the old Borim Bridge?

[Goanet] Manohar parrikar - right choice for CM

2007-10-27 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dear Chinmay Bhandare,

After the success of Bobby jindal, why not promote Manohar Parrikar
for Governorship of Arakansas? or join Dr.Carmo Da Cruz in drumming up
support for Manoharbab to replace Jep Bush in Florida??

For the present, Digu-bab is the bestest besht CM for Goa. In case we
need to replace him, we the electorate will decide. When we need NRI
help, we will ask.

Till we do, save your breath or come back to India, live in Goa
and canvas for him. We do not need any 1,2,3 guys telling us what to
do. We are not as dumb as you may think or be led to believe, if
thinking puts you to sleep.

In any case, we are looking at "Lok Sabha" elections right now .. for
the Federal Govt, [something like the guys on Capitol Hill in US of
A] not the state Govt., in case you have not yet realised. Manohar bab
may be a good substitute for George W.Bush, though. He has similar
delusions of his intelligence.

Dear Anamika:

Your sentiments are riht on target.Parrikar is the
most dynamic and honest politician we have right now
Politics is neve as easy as choosing between good and
bad, rather it is the tough choice between the lesser
of two evils...
Critics of parrikar will find 100 ways of pointing out
his faults but what is the choice we have?

maybe parrikar is not ideal but relative to the others
that we have he is the best

[Goanet] God and you and mother Mary/to Gabe

2007-10-27 Thread edward desilva
Hi Gabe,
Thanks for connecting anything and everything to Goa, we should have a trade
mark on them. Gypos, Romanies, Egypto, Travellers - Goan Catholics? you
mentioned the coconut but missed out that ALL Gypos are Catholics (they wear
BENTINS, scapulars).
  1. Bright colours and the women's dress (gagro) are Rajasthani in origin.
  2. Coconut are mode of offerings for the whole of India not just in Goa.
  3. Have you seen the Jamaicans with gold teeth? - Goan origin?
  4. My great grand mother told me Konkni is Sanskrit in Origin, most of all
she couldn't even read or write, let alone knowing what Sanskrit script looked
like, but she said it.
  5. Even the British Royal family is Goan in origin (Indian) - arranged
marriages!!
  ED.
  -
RESPONSE: Gypsies are called Gypos here ( derogatorily ). Gypsies did
originate from India...Goa to be precise. Their Romany language, if spoken
slowly could be understood as Konkani. Their ceremonies which have Coconuts,
also alludes to Goa, as are their bright clothes and love of Gold - surely a
Goan trait !Gabe Menezes.

Absolutely Cedrico -- At last a Goan with Guts

Absolutely Cedrico, way to go...you got the balls man! It is good to know that
finally there is one Goan, although far away in the land of the dons, who cares
so much for his homeland and has his heart and mind towards the cause of
reviwing Goa and restoring it to its lost glory.'You are a true Goan Don to
take on the corrupt politicians and the corrupt society.

I really am a great fan of yours ever since a close friend started forwarding
me mails from this Goan site, and must truely admit we are now become your good
fans in Muscat. I must say of late, except for your daring expose and take on
the foolish Goan politicians, nobody is interested in discussing hard core
drawbacks of Goa.

We have been fooled for long and now it is or never that the sorpotel eating,
feni drinking sussegad goenkar arises from his or her slumber.

In you the people of Goa see a re incarnation of Rajan Narayan, specially as he
grows old and is bribed with a huge amount by the Congress to write praises of
them.

The newspapers in Goa like Gomantak and Herald are raddis, meant to wrap chanas
and wipe yournobody cares for Goa the way you passionately write about it.

I feel someone like you is wasting your time in Dubai and must immediately go
to Goa and start or join a peoples movement or a daily that will be apolitical
and totally for the downtrodden Goan.

In the years to come, I see you as a young and budding politician, that is if
you are interested in the dirty game, or a media baron, should you plan to
start a media house.

Goa is gone to the dogs. All you can find in Goa is stray rabid dogs, paan
supari, pimps, prostitutes, drug peddlars, laamanis and smugglers like
Churchill Alemao's family in the south and thugs like Babush Monseratte in the
north, and like them, there is nothing ínbetween.

I have been inquiring about you through some friends from Margao and understand
you were actively involved in high level politics in your youth days at college
level. I think we need young people like you in Goa and not in Dubai, to fight
for Goa, to bear the burning torch and to burn to ashes all the kolvonts of the
legislative assembly in Porvorim.

Good luck dear fellow Goan, and all the best, never give up, I wish to see more
of your daring exposes in the Goanet, sooner your efforts will bear fruits and
wish you good luck.

Viva Goa! Viva cedrico!

Re: [Goanet] Macacas !

2007-10-27 Thread CORNEL DACOSTA
Hi Francis and Mervyn
Many thanks for the explanation re Macacas. Strangely, it has never been used
here in the UK. And what about the "sandflies" (or something akin) used for
South Asians in Boston? Have you come across this usage?

I have just seen Sicko. A lot of it is pretty realistic comparing the
American, Canadian, UK and French systems of health provision for the
respective citizens. My initial reaction is that a rosier picture of the UK and
France is provided but I had no criteria to use re the Canadian system. Also,
there was no reference to the French system that requires some payment at the
point of need but that can be retrieved later by application. Also, there was
no reference to the American system that does provide a service to those 50
million without insurance.

I also felt that the account of the Firefighters (9/11) being taken to Cuba
and receiving excellent treatment because they could not get help from America
was perhaps a bit overdone.

Overall, the film reinforced my strong belief that private insurance can
never do justice to the health of a nation's people. Put simply, private
insurance is about profitability and not health provision of a preventative
nature nor for a large range of people who require more than minimal help. I am
keeping my fingers crossed that Hilary's commitment to a national health system
if she becomes President, becomes a reality because for the majority population
of the USA he provision is pretty inadequate and pathetic for the only advanced
nation without a national health service. I wouldn't trade the UK health
service (despite its failures from time to time) for the American version as I
understand it.

[Goanet] Plots and sub-plots

2007-10-27 Thread Aniruddha Sen Gupta
Here's a story from the Indian Express which I felt
was archetypal of the complexity that is India. I know
it's nothing to do with Goa, but with the kind of
discussions on 'comparative religion' that one reads
here, I felt there was something in this story for
everyone. It's got religion, politics, science,
heritage, crime... given the nature of other more
famous temples in MP, there may even be some sex in it
 ;-)

A Muslim scientist fighting to save Hindu religious
heritage, and invoking the RSS against the BJP to do
so! Sublime irony. And there's even an environmental
angle to it -- the effort is against illegal mining,
after all.

ASI official wields saffron against saffron
---

Milind Ghatwai
The Indian Express News Newspaper

Superintending Archaeologist of ASI (Bhopal Circle) K
K Muhammed last week wrote a letter to RSS chief K
Sudershan seeking his intervention to save a group of
Shiva temples in Bateshwar in Morena district of
Madhya Pradesh, which were threatened by illegal
mining in their vicinity.

“The RSS is always ready to protect Indian culture.
It’s unfortunate that though there is a BJP Government
in MP the illegal mining continues threatening the
very existence of the ancient temples,” Muhammed wrote
to Sudershan on October 15.

Muhammed said he sought the intervention of the RSS
because he had exhausted all other options. He had
written twice to MP’s Culture Minister Laxmikant
Sharma requesting him to stop the illegal mining and
also wrote to the district magistrate and
superintendent of police in Morena district. Though he
did not take names, he alleged that the ruling party
was unable to stop mining because some powerful
politicians were involved.

Soni told The Indian Express over phone on Wednesday
that she was concerned about the temples and would
take up the issue with Chief Minister Shivraj Singh
Chouhan after getting all details. “I have asked the
DG of ASI to collect all facts immediately,” she said.
When asked how justified was the ASI official’s SOS to
the RSS, she said she would not comment on it before
getting all details.

After the unprecedented SOS, Sudershan is believed to
have got in touch with the MP Government, which
immediately got into action.

Sharma said he was not aware if the RSS chief got in
touch with the Chief Minister but the Government had
succeeded in stopping mining in the past few days. He
said that various departments like mining and forests
had kept a vigil near the temples. Police sources
confirmed that some equipment were seized from
Padavali village.

Sharma said the Government had cancelled 12 mining
leases but two leaseholders successfully appealed in
the court. He said only official lease holders were
operating but the Government had taken steps to
prevent all illegal mining.

[Goanet] BOOK REVIEW: Nostalgia and Beyond - Savia Viegas

2007-10-27 Thread

Nostalgia and Beyond

By Savia Viegas

BOOK REVIEW: Dominic's Goa: A nostalgic romp through a bygone era: Abbe
Faria Productions: Panjim: 2007: Rs 350

A yearning for what was or went before does different things to different
people. It made Shah Jahan build the Taj Mahal to commemorate the death of
his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal. The dethroned monarch yearned for a glimpse
of his dearly loved edifice when held prisoner at the Khas Mahal, but had to
be content with a distant reflection of the Taj Mahal across the Yamuna
river in a little mirror embedded in the wall.

Nostalgia has made Dominic Fernandes an Anjunian, now working as
advisor-cum-chief registrar of Saudi Aramco in Dharan, to burrow into his
archive of memories to regurgitate Dominic's Goa: a nostalgic romp through a
bygone era. This book affords a delightful read. The author admits that this
is just a fraction of the narrations he has penned and more is yet to come.
These candid outpourings take us to Anjuna, his village and to Goa, the land
of his birth, and the unspoilt childhood it gave him. It is also the land
that fills him now with longing as he lives in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,
secure no doubt but its topography, its desert light, its modernity and the
minimalist vegetation only make him dig into his past to retrieve a cache of
dense memories layered with a lush spread of a way of life which he can call
'goenkarponn'. The village of his childhood and the land of his dreams are
morphing, changing, its pristine dells which look like garbage pits, its
hillsides sore with shanties that defy planning but get converted hastily
into a 'votebank' opportunity. Coastal land and sand dunes have turned to
tawdry colonias and sand dunes to glass.

Dominic retrieves the archive of his past with honesty to the last detail
engraving like a meticulous sculptor subaltern detail upon detail 'of a Goa
he knew' to be able 'to inform his readers of what life was in Goa.' and
encase in their mind and hearts the most beautiful and pristine memories of
a long ago, which can perhaps be visited only through memoirs such as the
book under review. Dominic's book does just that while flaneur- like he
inhabits the world of his childhood, almost becomes child again and
painstakingly creates typologies, retrieves vignettes of memory to bring
alive not only his own childhood but an era of Goa that is now past and can
be relived only in nostalgia. Those bylanes have exited and been silenced by
time.

http://www.goanet.org/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=852

A very vital contribution through this book is that it relives subaltern
native memories. A malady endemic in Goan writing in English is the
valorization of its elitism, what one can describe best as the deep but
vacuous sigh of the Bhatkars. 'O for a time when tomatoes were a paise a
kilogram' such nostalgic lines are legion in the writings: we become more
Portuguese than we were, more European than we ever could have been. This in
turn feeds a contemporary media fallacy. Friends, artists and photographers
often talk of Goan architectural heritage as 'Portuguese houses'. The
tourism industry touts the same logic. Dominic work is more important than
it seems for it opens up Goa's hitherto unexplored West Asia vein and by a
plethora of seemingly simple details bares open the cultural nuances of how
'bassurkars' were received.

The Goan worker braving the alien environments of equatorial forests of
Africa or the bellies of the oceans, or the hot deserts of Arabia has been
an 'othered' entity not withstanding the fact that his/her toil in alien
environments has brought home the economic remittances that have partially
allowed Goa to don its mantle of prosperity. Dominic's book weaves together
these tendrils of memory to give the Bassurkar or Bomboikar his place in
history. The pain of absence held together by the slender link of occasional
letters, the network of departing and arriving workers who helped enchain
and keep alive family ties. The return of the Bassurkar weighed with the
privations of life in 'tents in scorching heat' yet glossed over with
gabardine pants, terelyne shirts roamer, brand wristwatch, gold bracelet,
rayban glasses and 555 cigarettes drew the critical eye of the Goan elite
till these early forays paved the way for greater job opportunities in the
Gulf. Dominic's work provides rich Braudelian details for writing working
class histories.

Those of us who have grown up on home turf like me will identify with the
cultural imagery of a Goa now past of memories sweet but excised to a large
extent from reality. The abundant splattering of konkoni phrases comes as a
rich offering for one realizes that to awake this 'kundalini' of memory it
is best done by being true to one's language and cultural expression. Who
does not remember the first bye- bye to Goa on Panjim jetty, the many knots
of sea travel and the " Vonk vonk and z

Get it into your head once and for all that the caste system will not fly
away overnight or one early morning. Caste system has nothing to do with
religion.

Even the sudhir wants to marry into a bamon or chardo zat but not below, so
do not pick on bamon, bamon all the time, just because you are not one.
Albert is jealous of our Bishop, You of Bamon, Bandhare of Catholic
Paedophiles. (Frustrated that you are not one of them).
Caste following is by choice just like religion is, they cannot mix and never
will.
If the Bishop says I'm not sudhir any more, I will say OK,
(shutupa-your-face-innit).
What will he do, bury me outside the cemetery gates after I'm dead?

Re: [Goanet] British society mentally derranged.............???????????????

2007-10-27 Thread JOHN MONTEIRO
I am not sure exactly what it is you are trying to imply. I was responding to
a post I read that said the British Society was mentally derranged. I gave my
opinion on what is happening in my area and in England as a whole, today, you
take it out of context.

There has been a murder of a Goan in the UK but some youths, aged 14 to 17
and my reaction to the person who posted on this forum was to say that there
are places, mainly big towns and cities where we have a tremendous problem with
young people who cause much damage to our society as it is today.

You are however right in calling me Joao, because that is what my birth
certificate says, it also says much more, which I will not go into but call me
JOHN please as this is how I have been known since coming back to the UK after
Independence in 1961. That's 46 years ago this December coming. You know very
little about me or how I am, nothing in fact about me but you misread my post,
select a piece and then rubbish me for the support I have given to this story.

You say I am condoning .."the barbaric act". but dont go into
details of what it is you think I am condoning. I have NEVER condoned violence,
either against the person, their beliefs or against property, never! For you
to accuse me of this is sheer callousness on your part.

If you cannot illucidate or put more than a couple of mismanaged sentences
together may I suggest you either go back to school, take evening classes or
take some time to come up with something a b it more positive and tell us
EXACTLY what it is you think I am condoning. I will then respond with pleasure.

I would appreciate it (and no doubt many Goanetters here would also like to
know), how clearly & on which side you are on in regard to the matter we have
been discussing, and then come up with something a bit more constructive than
picking on two Berkshire towns with an "innit" as if to say, "this is so, isn't
it" but SAY NOTHING to support your post, other than vilify my post...

There are HUNDREDS upon HUNDREDS of towns in the UK with pubs and clubs that
are over-flowing with drunken youths who cause endless property damage, damage
to themselves and others, all in the name of drink which our (British) society
accepts as the norm.

This week a Goan youth was killed. He was promanading with his friend,
minding his own business & chatting etc, then for NO REASON at all, he and his
friend was set upon by a few of these feral youths that are prowling our
streets in search of what is commonly called a "paki" (they are unable to tell
the difference between someone who is wearing a Sikh turban and a Hindu wearing
a turban or a Muslim cap or a Jewish cap, they are unable to tell much
difference in the languages or know much about anything beyond their own
"territory", they only notice "the colour of the Paki's skin..."), no different
to you I am supposing that peoples of the world ARE different, but just because
they have an opinion, they ought to be demeaned.

Are you Goan? If yes, from which hierachy do you come from? What is your
religion? Where are your parents now? Where did they come from? I could ask
you hundreds of questions which are of no constructive use to me, but I do care
if you care, about human beings & the land, the trees, the places of YOUR
childhood and the way in which you are (probably) desperately trying to make a
living, finding ways to keep friendships & relatives through much trauma which
we all experience these days.

But DO I REALLY care? Well, only my posts on this forum will supply you with
YOUR opinion of me, I will not answer my own question, I leave that to your
conscience. to decide.
This country has always had a pub or two in towns, maybe more in bigger
places, but now we are saturated with bars of all dimensions, totally ruining
the town centres and with it bring problems with some drinking "branded bars &
clubs" where under-age (under 18) people are regularly served alcohol until it
comes leaks out of every pore of thier skin!

Some die to alcohol poisoning, not to mention the problems being stored up
for liver failure later in life, if not within a few years. Its not right that
this is out of control but there are things that can be done to curtail this,
however this will NOT happen if the POLICE and the LAW MAKERS dont DO
SOMETHING, in some areas the police are picking up on the NO SMOKING POLICY
rather than prosecuting the shop-keepers who are selling cheap vodka to 15 year
olds. Of course the no-smoking policy, whatever your opinion on this, is not as
urgent as getting the MILLIONS OF LITRES of spirits and wines consumed by
under-age youths in parks, estates and common areas where other people have to
use!

Who will stop them? The police have the powers to do so. We have meetings
where action is being taken at last on these shops, they are revoking

Bail
denied to teacher, cops take custody

NT News Service

Margao, Oct 26 The children’s court judge, Mr Desmond D’Costa
today rejected the bail application of the lady school teacher. The court
rejected the bail application primarily because the investigation is at
preliminary stage so also the as the accused was trying to evade arrest.

The Maina-Curtorim police took her into custody after her
anticipatory bail application was rejected. She was taken to the Goa Medical
College (GMC), Bambolim for medical examination. Meanwhile, more
statements of students are being recorded in the case. The medical report of

[Goanet] LETS GET TOGETHER....and start a small revolution ( in the Rome of the east....and change this "cliche" to a point where Rome will be referred to as Goa of the west ) )

2007-10-27 Thread amchemgoem amkamzai
DEAR GOANS,
( and i define Goans as not only the people who have lived in Goa for
generations BUT also 1/ those who have come from outside Goa and have
integrated into and contributed to Goan society 2/ those of Goan origin who
live outside Goa,whether in other parts of india or abroadincluding
second and third generation individuals who may not have been born in Goa
in fact any person who is genuinely and sincerely interested in making
Goa a model state for the world to admire..my only exclusion criteria
are the one's who are only interested in Goa for monetary gain in
particular and/or for taking something from Goa without giving anything back
) ,

Once again, let me start by re-capping my core points from my previous
postings before proceeding to the purpose of this mail :
1) I firmly believe we cannot make a long term change for the better in Goa
without changing the body politics of the state ( and this is not an easy
task by any stretch of imagination )
2) The only way we can achieve the above is if we get together, irrespective
of religion,caste,socioeconomic/educational status and current residence (
and here i need to lay emphasis on the fact that even conservative estimates
show that there are approximately 4 to 5 lakhs of Goans who live outside
Goawhich assumes even more significance when the current population of
Goa is only 14-15 lakhs )

I may sound idealistic and overambitious.but i am also a realist (
particularly after the evaluation on the ground that i and my colleagues
have done over the last 2 years or so of every level of the Goan
socio-political scene over the last 2 odd years ). This is a very difficult
task but i have absolutly no doubt that if we put our collective intellect
together,we can overcome the money and muscle power which is currently
running riot in Goa.We are going to take one step at a timeand although
it may appear oblique without knowing the entire plan ( which i cannot
divulge till i see more unity and less bickering on Goanet ), this is an
extremely crucial juncture in our venture.

I initiated my first posting on Goanet a few weeks back by mentioning the
fact that our motherland is rich in God given natural resources and tourism
addictive scenic beauty. However, in my personal opinion,in generations to
come ( and long after the inevitable exhaustion of mineral
deposits, concretisation of the greenery, loss of the golden sands on the
beaches), the one factor which can and will sustain Goa is the unique
amalgamation of eastern and western culture. The word "acculturation " as
defined by the Oxford english dictionary has occured in Goa to a perfection
and is the single USP ( unique selling point to those who have had not come
across this business principle before ) which we need to preserve.not
purely from an emotional point of view but more importantly if grandchildren
and great grandchildren...and future generations of Goans are to find a
livelihood in Goa.

Coming to my central issue in this posting ( if you have survived the
ramblings above ) :
Over the last few days, there has been a spurt of postings on Goanet
regarding Romi script Konkani. In my mind, there is grave injustice being
done here ( and the posting by Dotor Fransisco-bab Colaco...which has also
appeared verbatim in todays O Heraldo, highlights the issue ). In my (
humble ) opinion,if we do not act NOW,one of the symbols of Goan identity (
particularly in context of the paragraph above ) and something the "Niz
Goenkar" should treasure will be lost to posterity in a generation or
two.
I would suggest we initiate a campaign by framing a petition in support of
immediate implementation of equal status for konkani in both romi and
devanagari script and address it to the chief minister of Goa ,leader of the
opposition in Goa and the prime minister of India. All those who support it
can put down their electronic signatures (which should be in the form of
their full name, addressand ideally telephone numbers as well as email
addresses )
If such a campaign is commenced ( and ideally the petition should be written
by apolitical individuals based in Goa ), I give you all my word of honour
that i will match every signature from those I do not know personally with
one from those who are my friends and colleagues )

[Goanet] Navy should not make Goa Govt beg for Dabolim land: Naik

Navy should not make Goa Govt
beg for Dabolim land: Naik

THE HINDU: Saturday, October 27, 2007
: 1405 Hrs

Panaji (PTI): Indian Navy should not make state
government and Airport Authority of India go with a begging bowl before them
for land to expand Dabolim airport in south Goa
district, a Congress MP said here.

"The land actually belongs to the Government
of Goa and the Indian Navy has not produced any deed of transfer of it when it
was taken over during Goa liberation in 1961," Rajya Sabha member
Shantaram Naik, who is member of state committee looking into feasibility of
new airport in Goa, said on Saturday.

With serious doubts being raised on proposed
international airport at Mopa in north Goa,
the state government is following up their plans of Dabolim airport expansion
which can accommodate more traffic.

After an intense agitation opposing Mopa airport
in the state, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had constituted a committee headed
by state Chief Minister to decide on the issue.

Naik, a member of the committee, demanded that
Dabolim airport should have a bigger Integrated Passenger Terminus than the one
planned which can cater to not more 1,000 passengers per day.

Daily traffic at the airport being around 4,000,
Dabolim should have a passenger terminus for catering to at least 3000
passengers, if on account of constraint of land availability a bigger terminus
cannot be constructed, the MP said.

Naik said that in reply to an unstarred question
asked by him in the Rajya Sabha, the Defence Minister had replied that post
liberation of Goa in 1961, Dabolim Airport was handed over to the Ministry of
Defence by an order of the then Military Governor.

"The Ministry of Defence has, accordingly,
title of 1,687.51
acres of land in Dabolim Airport
since April 9, 1962, he noted.

Mr. Bhandare, you ask innumerable questions per day. When facts
and the necessary information are provided, you just wait for some
time and then ask the same questions all over again. And it goes
on and on in this fashion.

You may enjoy asking the same question over and over again,
irrespective of what facts are provided to you, but I certainly
have better things to do than answer the same questions all the
time. Unless you have something fresh to say, I am not getting
into this any further. And if your 'something fresh' is about the
horrific revelations on Tehelka about Gujarat, please direct your
questions to the staff at Tehelka or to Ravi Shankar Prasad, the
BJP spokesperson, who says that the persons caught on spycam may
just have been "boasting". (I am still trying to make sense of
that one. Boasting!?)

As to Broken Peace, do a search of the goanet archives for the
past one and a half years. The topic has been extensively debated
on this forum, and you will find all your questions answered in
the archives.

CORNEL: This response of mine was a specific reply to Eric Pinto who had
absurdly claimed that Albert had "forfeited his right" to seek info about
Church finances.

RESPONSE: Then by the same logic Kishore Kumar in Bihar and Ataullah
in Ratnagiri have an inalienable human right to seek information about the
finances relating to the office of the Bishop of Goa?

CORNEL: My logic related specifically to the point made by Eric Pinto. It was
particularistic and not generalistic. Whether the logic applies to Kishore is
debatable but I would not make such a claim. I think my logic is pretty clear
and specific to the context in which I made it re Eric Pinto. Do think about it!

what is this "Albert de Souza has an inalienable human right" vis-a-vis the
Bishop of Goa?

I'll agree that Albert has an inalienable right to write utter nonsense here
at Goanet, until the Rules are changed.

CORNEL: I don't agree much with what Albert says but I am damned if I accept
Eric Pinto's explanation that Albert has "forfeited his right" to make an
enquiry. Is Eric some kind of oracle? Perhaps you are being misled in this
discussion and should focus on Eric's contention. Please, will you do so?

RESPONSE: Are you certain the Catholic Church in Goa has not met its legal
accountability requirements? If it has not, what legal statutes has the
Catholic Church violated?

CORNEL: Not for a moment have I said or am I saying that the Catholic Church
in Goa has not met its financial obligations to whomsoever it matters. I am
simply questioning Eric Pinto's contention that it is not necessary to do
because of his totally unrelated example from America. Did you not note his
absurd example of the woman who left money for some institution? I am surprised
you do not ask the simple question as you seem to ask me about the thread and
relevance to Eric.

> Interestingly, Fr Loiola, working for the Bishop's Office,

RESPONSE: Fr Loiola is a fine man and may I suggest you visit him at Altinho
on one of your future visits to Goa instead of "ringing" him from the UK.

CORNEL: Fr Loiola may indeed be a fine man as you say and I don't doubt you
for a moment. Unfortunately however, despite several reminders, he failed to
reply to me even privately and even out of simple courtesy. Is this what a fine
man normally does? I doubt it! Further, I don't need to visit him in Altinho or
anywhere. I can, if I choose to, ring him just as he can ring me if he so
chooses as he has two numbers of mine!. The matter cuts both ways without
privileging anybody. Why on earth did you think there was any onus on me, even
suggestively, to visit him in Goa? Is there some kind of one-way expectation?

> Indeed, the Vatican has a poor reputation on the principle of
> financial accountability

RESPONSE: This thread is about the visit of the Archbishop of Goa to San
Francisco that has left some in a tizzy. Drawing the Vatican into this
thread is a misnomer.

CORNEL: Not at all my dear Bosco. The proposition of non accountability in Goa
as tacitly implied by Eric Pinto is highly questionable. As the Vatican has got
itself in several messes over financial accountability, I am sure we would not
want it to get into a further mess by one of its constituent churches in Goa by
not perhaps having financial accountability. The same applies when a single
priest in any part of the world gets criminalised because of paedophilia. The
Vatican can't say ah but that happened well outside the Vatican. The business
of the Church whether in Timbuktu or anywhere around the globe does impinge on
the Vatican on a range of matters and especially financial.

CORNEL: Finally, I wonder Bosco if you rushed your response to me because very
very unusually, I could not agree with anything you said in your response post.

[Goanet] On Panjim's Traffic Woes - A Proposal

2007-10-27 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar

To Goanet -

I have empirically observed that the the quality of breathable air in Panjim
has diminished discernibly in the past 5 years. Is any environmental NGO
systematically documenting data about this? (Let me guess: no). The
degradation is a direct consequence of the dramatic increase in motorized
vehicles since 2002 or so. A walk through Panjim used to be one of life's
delicious pleasures. Today it has become a hazard to life & limb, not to
mention the tympanic membrane.

Can anything be done about it? The answer is: Yes. But the "yes" comes with
several riders. It will take a multidisciplinary collaborative effort. The
ingredients will involve bold, innovative ideas, judicious town planning,
engineering expertise, sound political leadership to buy into and implement
the proposal, and societal will & discipline to sustain it. In other words,
it will never happen.

In broad stokes I will table my proposal.

I draw inspiration from what I have seen in cities like Zurich, Singapore,
and across America, while recognizing that the solution will have to be
tailored to our local needs & conditions, and come within the ambit of our
financial resources (although, if one were to calculate the extent of the
robbery of the state treasury by our elected representatives over the years,
funds ought not to be an issue).

The basic idea is as follows:

Define Zone 1 to be the heart of Panjim (church square and surrounds) and
mandate it to be a pedestrian-only zone, with all motorized traffic verboten
there. Service vehicles replenishing supplies to businesses to be allowed
before 9 am and after 9 pm. Allowance for emergency situations.

A second outer layer Zone 2 to be defined: no private vehicles allowed, but
public transport to be introduced in the form of open golf-like buggies
(only bigger & longer), operating with regularity and with stop points every
200-300 metres (Zurich has electric trams that operate on the same
principle). Design of the buggy is an engineering problem and will come with
appropriate modular modifications for the monsoon season.

A third outermost layer Zone 3: private vehicles allowed but only upon
payment of a premium. Public transport to be similar to that of Zone 2. The
idea is to discourage casual use of vehicles and encourage use of public
transport. Want to use your car? Then be prepared to pay a non-trivial
surcharge.

The zoning will be a key issue and has to be crafted thoughtfully. There
will be people affected, those living in these zones - special provisions to
be made for them. Rickshaw wallahs will be affected - suitable alternatives
to be provided to them (perhaps absorb them into the public transport
system). And so on. It will be impossible to satisfy everyone, but the
guiding principle should be the greatest good of the greatest number.

There will be access conduits into and out of the city at all times - Panjim
is lucky to have a natural getaway, the Dayanand Bandodkar Marg. In fact,
Panjim, thanks to the Portuguese, already has the layout to implement a plan
of this sort.

The benefits will be enormous: savings in petrol, improvement in the quality
of air, the city will become a much quieter and pleasant place, and since
people will be forced to walk, improvement in overall public health comes
for the ride.

I emphasize that the foregoing is a conceptual model. The details will have
to be fleshed out. Many heads and hands will have to come together. If you
wish to criticize the above, you may write to me. I will respond only if you
have something to say that I have myself not thought of. I have had a lot of
time to think about this and it is very likely that I have already seen your
"What about XYZ?" knee-jerk question.

The current thinking in official circles is appalling. They want to convert
heritage buildings into parking lots. As if that will solve anything. The
retarded donkeys.

Again, I don't see anything positive happening. Based on available evidence,
modern Indians are incapable of instituting processes and systems. What I
see in Panjim's future are more vehicles, more accidents, more injuries on
the road, more cacophony, polluted air, and a swarm of ghatis. That should
warm the cockles of your heart.

Warm regards,

r

[Goanet] Kushawati River oozing muggy water

2007-10-27 Thread JOAO FERNANDES
The mining companies operating in hinterlands of Quepem and Sanguem talukas
are all out to destroy the kushawati River which is the main source of water
to number of "kulagars" situated on its bank and which is the main source of
water to Paroda irrigation Canal.

The Kushawati River which is flowing through Quepem town is since last 3
days oozing muggy water though there is no rain in the hinterlands of Quepem
and sanguem these days.

The oozing of muggy water is attributed to the unplanned mining activities
going on in the hinterlands of Quepem and Sanguem which are increased many
hold in the last few years. The muggy water in the kushawati River can be
seen upto Sulcorna, beyond Sulcorna the water the normal. How can muggy
water today flow into the river as it has not been rained yesterday night
at Colomba and in the adjoining areas questions one Soiru Sawant a resident
of Colomba.

During my childhood I have not seen such a muggy water flowing into the
Kushawati river river even when it was raining heavily. The mining
Companies stores the muggy water into the mining pit and when it is
accumulates in the pit they find difficult to operate the mine so by opening
the mouth of the mining pit they released the muddy water from the mine
into the river which is the easiest way for the mine owners Informed said
Soiru further.

Due to the flow of muggy water in the river these days the fish living in
the river struggles to survive as it is seen that the fish were floating on
the water , these days the water of the river is so muddy that it is even
unworthy for the cattle's to drinks complaints one John Cardozo a resident
of Quepem who apart from residing on the bank of the Kushawati river owns
cattle's .

If this situation continues further the kushawati river which was known for
its guilty will lost its charm apprehends the villagers of Quepem.

Literati invites you to a session on

The Snakes of Goa

by

Rahul Alvares

Sunday, 28th October 2007 at 11.30 a.m.

There will be a slide presentation followed by a discussion.

The talk will cover different aspects described in his book 'The Call of the
Snake' including how to identify snakes, myths about snakes, how to deal
with snake bites etc.

Rahul's travels through the snake world of India which resulted in his book
Free From School in which he describes the benefits of his year away from
school shall naturally be a essential part of his presentation.

For those of you who don't know Rahul, Rahul learnt snake handling at the
Pune snake park, spider rearing at Madras, and croc handling under Romulus
Whitaker at the Croc bank in Mammallapuram. Rahul has been retrieving snakes
from human habitations in north Goa for the last eleven years and has
rescued more than 800 snakes. He also edits an on-line newsletter on this

Manohar Parrikar and the BJP -- A Good expose Floriano

I fully agree to Anamika's post (if a lady by that name actually exists or is
not another spin doctor of Porrikar). Porikar is a good administrator and if he
personally came around at 2 am to supervise the works at IFFI...i would say
that speaks volumes of his commitments, but on the other hand i wonder if he
was interested in the project or the bounty he is alleged to have made post it.

I knew Porikar since early 90s when he was a fire brand leader of opposition,
and came as a change to the Goans as the then leader of opposition Ramakhant
Khalap was totally bought over by Rano and the Congress and acted as a pro
congress man whilst still in the MGP, and worse while still holding the offices
and enjoying the priveledges of the offices of the leader of opposition.

Parrikar, came as a whiff of fresh air...but as the years rolled by we realised
and saw the true colours of a desperate RSS chaddiwallah, who tried to
successfully camoufledge the people into believing that his colours were
anything but safforn.

But along with the first traces of success the added colours melted and exposed
more and more of the safforn original. The true colours of the Parrikar were
observed when he stumped the MGP and almost destroyed the regional outfit, next
he took Dotor Willy -- the ever so desperate kodel seeker for a huge ride, then
Sardinha, then the Mandarin hotel case, the Governor's arcade destruction, the
Bishop's palace, the harrasment of the minorities using the police force, etc
etc etcthe list is endless and did not stop at forging the signature of the
Neri.

All through he had good assistance from the likes of Digamber kamat and his
other BJP associates.

But it was not the BJP that made the frankestein called Parriker...it was the
Congress and in particular the former chief minister Pratapsingh Rane.

The latest preys of Parrikar is none other than the south Goa BJP candidate for
the parlimentary election -- Dr Wilfred Meaquita!

Yesterday, the BJP has publicly announced at Margao's Lohia Maidan that if the
Congress withdraws the SEZs, they will withdraw Dr Wilfred Mesquita as its
candidate? This shows how serious the BJP is about the forthcoming elections
and also how much of a puppet has Dr Wilfred Mesquita been already reduced even
before the battle has begun, what he will be later on is anybody's guess.

Parrikar and the BJP has taken Goan politics to the dogs...to ground
levels...Parrikar at one time denounced the likes of churchill and babush only
to get into an alliance with them post elections.

All the fake colours of secularism that parrikar painted himself with initially
are now washed away by the power of his many sins...

So in the present scnario when the Goan masses have woken up to the fact that
the Congress is evil, the bigger evil lurking around is people like
Porrikar...and trust me -- corruption at a level is tolerable but not the
menace of communial politics.

See what Narendra Modi has done to Gujarat...I feel Porrikar was responsible
for the Curchorem riots and the congress under Rane let him off the hook easily.

And this is the Porrikar and BJP we are trying to give a second chance?

[Goanet] Re.Dean D'Cruz to inspect Cidade de Goa violations at Vainguinim beach

2007-10-27 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dears,

The Vainguinim beach in Taleigao is a peculiar case. It was a village
panchayat area that was made a part of the City of Panaji under the
Panaji Municipal Council [PMC] during the first phase of the Parrikar
regime with Mayem MLA Prakash Phadte as the TCP Minister. The
classification of the area changed from CRZ-III [Rural] to CRZ-II
[Urban] almost overnight.

In 2002 elections, the much demonised "Sultan of Taleigao" promised
his electorate that he would make Taleigao a Village again. he won the
elections, made a deal with Parrikar, became the TCP Minister and made
Taleigao a Village Panchayat inspite of Parrikar making the PMC into a
bogus Corporation vide an Act of 2003 that is still under dispute.
Since 2003, the Parrikar, Rane and now the Digu-bab led Governments
conveniently forgot to inform the GCZMA and NCZMA that Taleigao is a
village once more and so is Vainguinim beach. Four years is not such a
long time ... or is it?

Somewhere in 2000, the Central Government notified that the mouth of
the Zuari is MPT jurisdiction. MPT advertised that in October, 2007,
and the Goa Govt. took offence to it ...because it not only includes
the Cidade de Goa area but also the Aldeia de Goa area and the
all-important Jesus Nazareth chapel area in Siridao.. The Fomento
group will come a cropper and this may foment trouble for the Goa
Government of Digu-bab.

The Monserrate pair playing hell with the Cidade de Goa sewage pipes
allegedly discharging untreated sewerage into the Zuari river and
Arabian Sea was bad enaough. The Vaiguinim Valley residents wanting
access to the Vainguinim beach that Cidade de Goa treats like its
"Mokaso" since the days of Somnath Zuarkar as the humble "Sir Punch"
of Taleigao is worse. The Cidade people thought he was god of the
Zuari spirits [Soma] till Babush Monserrate showed him the door and
kicked his butt out ..quite permanently.

Today, Babush has rightly become the "Ganv'cho Rakhandar" [never a Dev
as per Goan tradition, but always a Dev'char !!] and Zuarkar has
become taddi-par. Will the City folks worship the village god? Or will
the "naked one" of the Devas protect them from all the Dev'chars??

It is time for the people residing in Goa to rally round the truth.
Today the Truth is on the side of Babush and Jenifer Monserrate
and the Taleigao Village Panchayat . in Vainguinim Beach, Taleigao
V.P..

The "linear wall" built horizontally as a "jetty" instead of
vertically as a compound wall is for Architect Dean D'Cruz [Chairman
of Insititute of Architects-Goa Chapter and also a member of the Goa
Bachao Abhiyan] and Adv. Ryan Menezes to decide.

The Cidade folks seem to be taking the joke of a woman and a piano all
the way across the wall when it is not upright, it is Grand.

Jetty, any body? A visit to the coral islands of Pequeno and Grande
awaits you! Some of our politicians would love to take off there. Why
are thses pesky guys from Vainguinim asking inconvenient questions? Do
they not know it is election time in South Goa? What happened to their
Sucegad nature??

Moreover, Formento Resorts (Cidade de Goa) have erected a private jetty
right into the Zuari river for the purpose of water sports activities;
a shed right upto the beach through which Formento Resorts operate
water sports activities and another shed erected upon rocks a few
metres away from River Zuari, wherein a generator plant and equipment
is installed.

The petitioner also informed the Court that some locations on the
beach are utilized for the purpose of dumping of garbage, to release
sewage into river Zuari, besides constructing a PCC structure tank etc
10 to 15 mts away from the sandy portion of the beach, private
chambers in public nallah and setting up swewage treatment plant very
close to residential buildings in Machados Cover and across the public
nallah.

Sadar pranam Anamika,
These discussions are hardly intellectual. They appear as such because
many are happen to be well written. Sohave no fear. On occassion
comments get sarcastic -- in which case ignore those you may find
insulting. Hopefully this will not happen. There are a few who
gravitate to attacking those they perceive as the weakest. Again,
forget those ankle biters, and if need be kick them with the
paimzon/am. Nothing can be more Indian. But you will be safe, if you
wish to get some answers, I assure you. I avoid politics, since I do
not live your reality on the ground in Goa and have said so in the
past. However, Floriano's post is full of clarity in this regard third
para down. In the second paragraph, he animates the extent of support
politicians receive from people like you who will weather the elements
in the hope of bettering ones lives. Floriano takes care of all your
concerns in the most brilliant response I have read on a Goan
political mind and procedural technique.

Yes people make mistakes, that is the way we are conditioned to see
and accept their colossal errors -- as mistakes, and are immediately
expected to move towards offering absolution. Zalem tem zalem, attan
phudem povea. After Bill Clinton, everyone realized that timely
"apologies" help save their hides (chamdi vachoitat) as well get a
graft of new skin.

You now have a name. One who stepped into Goanet. You are no longer
one without a name, as in Anamika (A_nam_ika). It is a superb, and
very memorable name. But Manohar (Man_o_har), who fascinates all still
has the ability to steal the heart, and expects mot (votes) without
giving back. Hopefully there are ways he can earn them and make people
proud. And I truly hope he will, and if he does wins to stay faithful
and fair to all. This is one way that people themselves will see a
change of heart; otherwise it is business as usual. Imagine if someone
like Neson Mandela did not have the graciousness of being, and heart,
in fact, the political will and intelligence despite what many in his
group felt, about letting people go off the hook for atrocities they
caused. As in he Consumer forum, Goa needs the equivalent of a
Political or Good governance forum, once or twice a month, where
politicians are held accountable. Its not such a radical concept.

I hope that people after seeing setbacks to their lives begin to think
differently. I also hope Manohar will grow in wisdom. And bid his
time. He has the skill set, but that is not all. He should bare
himself to the state, hold forums on how he plans to rectify issues
from scripts, to roads, to road deaths, to scholarship, to
entrepreneurship, to beautifying villages, to making tourism benefit
as well as help people maintain their cherished lives. And keep
answering every queston put to him. If he wishes so much to be elected
to bring further change -- can he stand that. Modernity does not have

[Goanet] Navy should not make Goa Govt beg for Dabolim land: Naik

Navy should not make Goa Govt beg for Dabolim land: Naik

Panaji (PTI): Indian Navy should not make state government and Airport
Authority of India go with a begging bowl before them for land to
expand Dabolim airport in south Goa district, a Congress MP said here.

"The land actually belongs to the Government of Goa and the Indian
Navy has not produced any deed of transfer of it when it was taken
over during Goa liberation in 1961," Rajya Sabha member Shantaram
Naik, who is member of state committee looking into feasibility of new
airport in Goa, said on Saturday.

With serious doubts being raised on proposed international airport at
Mopa in north Goa, the state government is following up their plans of
Dabolim airport expansion which can accommodate more traffic.

After an intense agitation opposing Mopa airport in the state, Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh had constituted a committee headed by state
Chief Minister to decide on the issue.

Naik, a member of the committee, demanded that Dabolim airport should
have a bigger Integrated Passenger Terminus than the one planned which
can cater to not more 1,000 passengers per day.

Daily traffic at the airport being around 4,000, Dabolim should have a
passenger terminus for catering to at least 3000 passengers, if on
account of constraint of land availability a bigger terminus cannot be
constructed, the MP said.

Naik said that in reply to an unstarred question asked by him in the
Rajya Sabha, the Defence Minister had replied that post liberation of
Goa in 1961, Dabolim Airport was handed over to the Ministry of
Defence by an order of the then Military Governor.

"The Ministry of Defence has, accordingly, title of 1,687.51 acres of
land in Dabolim Airport since April 9, 1962, he noted.

Re: [Goanet] Medical report confirms sexual assault. Really?

2007-10-27 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dear Selma,

Virginity of the spinster is not an issue. It is not the proverbial
"Big issue about a small piece of tissue." Forensic science has
advance since the time when the doctors discovered seven little dents
on the Maidenhead of Goldilocks!

Obviously, the type of evidence that a molested boy child will leave
behind will be different from the type of evidence one would expect
from a healthy sexual relationahip with an adult male . for love
or money.

The tuition teacher [she is NOT a school teacher as per information so
far available] is an accused, not a convict. The learned Judge and a
three women jury will decide. The Children's Court is different from
other Courts in India. Rina Ray, as the then Secretary for Women and
Child Development, has worked hard to put better systems in place
through the Goa Children's Act.

When there was alleged to be a rape of a major girl in Goa College of
Art [it was later proved to be a false accusation in court, and
appealed by neither the state nor any otther individual/agency/NGO],
women's organisation such as the Bailancho Saad had even demanded that
the accused boys be castrated. No man's organisation, if there is one
outside YMCA, has demanded anything similar so far. So how come you
label men as misogynists? Or are you talking of the law enforcing
agencies? Police Inspector C.L. Patil, who has just been transferred
to Colva-Benaulim, is good at investigative work. He will have
information on this soon.

You are right about Paedophilia being a sickness. We need to ascertain
whether this tuition teacher has it ...or whther she has just opted
for the easier alternative due to lack of access to professional
services in Goa. May she she is not net savvy, either. In a major
tourist destination like Goa everything is available at a price. Even
a toute at a beach side shack can be a fountain of information
...often better than the Lonely Planet and other books put together,
and chaeper than all of them.

I'm so disheartened by this story. On the one hand if
the woman in question did molest this child then she
has to pay the full penalty under the law.

On the other hand, it seems to have brought to the
fore all the misogynistic assumptions made by our
society.

On 26/10/2007, Kevin Saldanha <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

> Let us hope that the perpertrators of this and other crimes may get

I agree with Kevin. It's very easy to sit in judgement on others. Yet
even Christ opted not to do it with a Magdalene. While not trying to
minimise the need for each of us to take responsibility for our
actions, or even the serious harm this will have on the young victims,
issues of sex-crimes need to be studied more closely before we come
down in judgement.

The seriousness of this issue first struck me when attempting, some
years ago, a fellowship looking at gender and the media. Goa has so
many "incomplete" families -- because of largely male out-migration,
and male in-migration. How do people cope with their pent-up
sexuality? Marriages are getting delayed in Goa (women marry at the
average age of 25+) and as women get more highly educated, they
sometimes find it difficult to find a suitable match. Divorce rates
are growing, yet it does not have the social acceptability available
say in the West.

Apart from migration, the speedy decline of traditional values (I'm
not suggesting these were good, ideal or healthy ... just that they
worked for their time) and also the sexualisation of every aspect of
society (try reading a popular magazine on health, the Times of India,
or Herald's Page 7 and you might agree)

Goa doesn't quite yet work in tandem with Western styles of coping,
while at the same time it faces pressures closer to Western levels (as
do many parts of urban India, and hence sex-crimes are showing a sharp
increase there too). In the space of a decade-and-half, the Indian
mindset and sexuality too has come under attitudes of liberalisation,
even as many struggle to cope with the fast-pace of change.

Both the persons accused, perhaps not coincidentally, are in their
'forties. While I sometimes myself joke about mid-life crises, the
fact is that our societies fail to understand the seriousness of the
issues involved. I think we need to all be searching for issues and
answers here. FN.

1. I do not badmouth the RSS. I expose every crooked,
communal organisation irrespective of their religion,
because they seek ethnic cleansing. Anyway I do not
consider the RSS as religious Hindus, they are
political Hindus.
BTW it is the RSS that badmouths the Indian
Constitution, the Indian flag and minorities. But
people wearing blinkers of prejudiced hate will never
notice FACTS.

2. I have never circulated ANY white papers on
imaginary problems faced by Muslims in Goa. I
sometimes write on Goanet to repeat what I say in the
public space of Goa that the community is not just
being demonised, it is being unfairly victimised by
some Catholics and some Hindus.

B, you hide behind a camouflaged name, yet to insist
on calling me names...
But, you have caught the wrong bull, by the tail...
C’mon Chinmay, write your full name and addrerss, if
you have the guts...
And don’t send your private mails to apologise…
Like the legendary Shishupal, my quota of forgiveness
for you, is over...

No regards for your BULL

Thanks for keeping us informed Tom.

Otherwise: the main battle I've been waging for the past year or so is
to get people to reconise that I don't call myself Fred (which is only
the login name for my comp, used in Unix days when anything above
eight alphabets couldn't be accepted). FN

You came in late, Selma. This has been debate, fought over, and
certified. Ask Eddie Fernandes. FN
