any objection?
Isn't it my prerogative to give prominence whomsover I wish to in Gulab or

Although I can forcefully counter many other bigot views expressed in this

We have to accept we are living in stupid times and dealing with bigot

Dear friends,
The article, Glimpses of Konknni in Roman script by Fr. Pratap Naik,
though sketchy, is fairly truthful.

hide the fact that not a single Konkani book in Roman script was printed
between 1660 and 1890 any where in the world? And also that no
Konkani book was printed in Goa even between 1890 and 1928?I
hereby challenge Fr.Pratap Naik to prove me wrong on this count; and
this is not the first
time I am throwing this challenge.

Fr. Naik also exploded his own pet myth: that Devanagari script is of
the Hindus whilst Roman script is of the Roman Catholics. He now
proves what I have been consistently stressing; that when it comes to
using Devanagari for writing / teaching Konkani, it is Catholic Goans
who have led the way and the Hindus, including Saraswats, followed
much later. To the evidence adduced by Fr. Naik, one could add the
following: in 1926, Francisco Pedro Borges wrote a Konkani
(Devanagari) religious book of 198 pages entitled Kristanv
Bhavartheacho dispott'tto sangati; this was printed in Khanapur.

At the threshold of the twentieth century, a matriculate (equivalent
to XI passed) Shenoy Goembab, in his twenties/thirties, published some
Konkani translations in Roman script. And this is held against him.
Some ignoramuses also think that this is a revelation, little
realizing that the info is found in my translation of Shenoy Goembab's
biography. I would be very happy to receive clarifications on the above
points.

Did Shenoi Goybab do his PH.D. in Konkani or Linguistics between the

Kindly let readers know your qualifications and credentials - if
you are professionally qualified.

Really sorry about, I should have posted a disclaimer. I am not having
any professional credentials re stock markets but I am a investor for
about 3 years now.

I posted about nifty at 2600-3000 based on a moneycontrol interview.
(check below) Even Dow at 7200 is a technical report posted by some
analyst.

Also that is the reason why I suggested people interested in investing
in indian stocks should do so based on a responsible advisory service
like Equitymaster.com

Rishikesh

Q: Do you have a timeline drawn along those levels? What do you expect
the markets to do when the Nifty reaches above the 4400 mark?

A: If the Nifty goes below the 4400 levels, then in about six months
we will see the 2600 level. We should bounce from there. There is a
minimum target for the Nifty at around the 2750 mark. The Sensex is a
little more bearish and the minimum target I set would be at around
9,200.

http://www.moneycontrol.com/india/news/fii-view/sensex-not-to-fall-beyond-9k-levelsray-barros/19/08/347903

Also Dow at 7200

http://www.nysun.com/business/the-dow-at-7200-superbears-scary-roar/82182/

---

It seems target for Dow is around 7200 and for Indian stocks - nifty
around 2600 and Sensex at 7500.

Some tremors will be felt in india - mostly for real estate
speculators. Interest rates should go up so would home loans, so less
buying. Many who bought the second homes in Goa, might be interested
in selling now. All that India growth story turned out to be Ambani
growth story.

Once Nifty goes to around 2600-3000, wait for a month or two for
midcap and small caps to melt down and make long term investments in
potential.

Subscribe to a service like Equitymaster and invest in their
recommended stocks. Also invest on monthly basis in a SIP (piecemeal)
way.

Rishikesh

BTW Gold would really appreciate with all this problems.

[Goanet] Cops incited attacks on Christians: Probe

2008-09-19 Thread marshallmendonza

Cops incited attacks on Christians: Probe
A fact-finding team assessing attacks against Christians in Karnataka has held
the state government “directly responsible for allowing violence to spread”.

The team’s investigations revealed that first churches and schools were
attacked, said Harcharan Singh Josh, the fact-finding team and National
Commission for Minorities (NCM) member. These attacks were “followed by male
policemen beating up innocent women and children (as) the top state officials
and ministers remained mute spectators”.

The fact-finding team also found the pattern of attacks similar to those in
Orissa.

“The Bajrang Dal’s role has been established and we’d apprise the Centre of our
findings,” Josh said.

The observations against Bajrang Dal came on a day when the Centre turned the
heat on organisations responsible for attacks on Christians in Orissa and
Karnataka.

The report is expected to strengthen the case for a central directive under
Article 355 of the Constitution to Karnataka and Orissa. The Centre has been
worried at the “inability or reluctance” of the two states to take effective
steps, a senior government official said.

Girija Vyas, another team member and chairperson of the National Commission for
Women, said the state police’s role was “shocking and shameful”. During its
tour of the worst-affected district, Mangalore, the team concluded that “there
was no law and order in the state”.

“Violence against a particular community has been allowed to spread to three
districts without any provocation. Statues of Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary were
desecrated. Could all this have happened without the state government’s role?”
asks Josh.

Vyas said the attacks against Christians that began in Mangalore had now spread
to Kolar, Dakshina Kannada and Chikmagalur. The team, which also included
National Commission for Minorities Chairman SY Qureshi, will submit its report
to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh next week.

[Goanet] It’s raining ‘men’!

2008-09-19 Thread Cecil Pinto
It's raining 'men'!
My Goan heart bleeds for Calcutta

By Cecil Pinto

Columnist Sudeep Chakravarti interviews journalist turned author Cecil
Pinto on his latest book Once Upon A Time In Kalikata.

Sudeep: The blurb on your book says that you evoke the essence of a
city on the verge of losing its soul. But Kolkata has survived many
such doomsayers and continues to be the City of Joy.

Cecil: So now you are the Voice of Calcutta? Mithun Chakraborty,
Bengali actor and former naxalite, agrees with my views. So there!

Sudeep: Talking of naxalites your previous book, Red Mud is
acclaimed as a fine piece of writing about the ill effects of mining
in Goa. Wasn't there some mention of naxalism there?

Cecil: No there wasn't. The bogey of naxalism was raised by Manohar
Parrikar but aggravated by your fellow Bong journalist settled in Goa,
Sujay Gupta. At least he doesn't claim to be more Goan than the Goans.

Sudeep: Your first novel Fresh Fish, set in a rural middle-class
school, is considered a fantastic coming of age novel. It has an
understated poignancy and wisdom which this new book lacks.

Cecil: Fresh Fish was an authorbiographical book. That's why it rings
true. I'm not very good at pure fiction.

Sudeep: Surely you mean autobiographical?

Cecil: No I mean authorbiographical. It is a term I have invented to
describe a genre where the author presents a dramatised and
fictionalised account of his own life. He may or may not use his own
name for the character. Fresh Fish was essentially my school life.

Sudeep: So why didn't you write Once Upon A Time In Kalikata in the
same style? There is obviously very little engagement with the
characters this time around.

Cecil: I wanted to tell many stories I had heard from other people. I
wanted to cast aspersions on some people. I wanted to check out some
of my conspiracy theories by throwing a few baits. Each character in
this book is based on two or three real life characters. That's why
they don't feel real. I wanted to show how clever I am at playing with
names. Very little in this novel is first hand…

Sudeep: Yes that shows. Perhaps you were trying a Dan Brown technique
of using religious shock value to get readers. Maybe that explains why
throughout the book you refer to a sacred female deity, Goddess Durga,
in a very casual and in fact derogatory way?

Cecil: No. That was a genuine mistake. It was only brought to my
attention after the book launch. An unintentional cultural gaffe if
you will.

Sudeep: But surely there are expert editors to take care of these
things? In your acknowledgements you mention many Bongs who helped you
to understand Calcutta and Bengalis and phraseology and translation
and…

Cecil: Well except for that Durga thing I got everything else right,
and I don't need you to authenticate anything!

Sudeep: Ha! Almost all your Bong characters speak a pidgin English I
have never heard in a lifetime in Calcutta.

Cecil: Have you heard Utpal Dutt in Gol Maal?

Sudeep: He was playing a part, for heavens sake. And one person
speaking a pidgin English is different from almost every Bong in your
book speaking a language which sounds more like
Bandra-Catholic-English than anything I've ever heard. What, men? I'm
dere no, men. Dat true id-jut? Dis ting, men. Annuder Indu God,
brudder? What men bugger? Dis men, dat men. Why have you
caricaturised most Bongs into some typical stereotypical pidgin
speaking idiot that seem to exist only in your Goan head? We Bongs
might literally translate from Bengali to English but we do not speak
pidgin English!

Cecil: Are you denying that all Bongs use Keo Karpin hair oil, eat
murighonto made of fish heads, carry a cloth jhola bag, wear a monkey
cap and spout Rabindrasangeet?

Sudeep: Hello. Here I am, as Bong as anyone. Do I do all these things?
Your presumptions make me sick.

Cecil: Since when are you the representative of all Bongs? And talking
of sickness, as my book clearly shows, you Bongs cannot reply to a
polite 'How are you?' without an obnoxious explanation of your ulcers
and piles and burning sensations and bowel movements. All of which of
course can be cured with Gelusil, Pudin Hara and Mustard Oil.

Sudeep: Let's change the topic. Naming your fictitious area in
Calcutta as Gomorraha is very offensive; specially considering you
took it as the shortening of the name of a deity.

Cecil: Well at least the part about every fourth Bong being named
Dabashis is true. And that every Bong in addition to the 'good' name
has a pet name like Montu, Dinku, Shontuda or Protima, Shampa, Champa
and Tuktuki.

Sudeep: Eeeesh!

Cecil: And you will also deny that all Bong parents focus their
children's entire education, marriage and career towards a Nobel
Prize, Oscar Award or Indian Cricket Team Capitancy? Eta shotti
hocchhe?!

Sudeep: Kee Kando!

Cecil: Aren't all your women large eyed and curvaceous. I mean see
Bipasha Basu, Pooja Bedi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Rani Mukherji, Raakhee,
Sushmita Sen and even Rahul Bose.

[Goanet] violence against Christians in Mangalore

2008-09-19 Thread marshallmendonza
Laluram Salvi has forwarded article by Deepak Kamat specifying the reasons for
violence and vandalisation of churches. However he needs to answer the
following questions:

1.If New Life was distributing literature denigrating Hindu gods and godesses,
the lawful thing to do was to lodge a complaint with the Police and let law
take its course. It is completely unlawful for the sangh parivar to take law
into its hands and start dispensing perceived justice. In this regard in what
way are they different from muslim fundamentalists who went haywire following
the painting of a cartoon of the Prophet in a Danish newspaper? They are both
sides of the same coin.
2.Re other allegations of 'forceful'conversions, Laluram is called upon to
provide evidence / proof, failing which it will be treated as nothing more than
propaganda.
3.Re killing of Swami Lakshmananda, I have asked him in the past to produce
evidence / proof that it was the work of christian missionaries. But till date
he has not been able to do so.
He will continue saying what his masters / handlers tell him as he is not able
to think gor himself. I do not think it is worth responding any more to his
emails.

it would be bankrupt in a few years if it were not allowed to charge

BangaloreBIAL officials said **they needs to recover the Rs 2,500 crore

tremendous pressure to expand capacity and the money raised from the fee
surcharge will be pumped back into the project. It would be challenging for
the consortium to raise more funds from their investors if the project is
not showing returns.

Note that the time to breakeven is set for a mere 5 years when the
concession may be for 30 years, renewable for another 30! This is what
happens when an airport project is treated as a business rather than as
infrastructure for the public. For Mopa the government should ensure that
the time to break even is at least 10 years. User charges should kick in
only after that to fund any expansion. It needs to find a consortium which
is interested in Goa rather than just making money.

[Goanet] Rock on - Goanet 18th September

2008-09-19 Thread Bernice Pereira
It was nostalgic to read Patricia Alvares's article on Goa weddings (September
18th).

Weddings of yore were so charming.  They were always held  in  bungalows or if
the homes were not large enough to house the  number of guests invited,  a
pandal  was erected.  Although I was a little girl at the time, I remember the
old mest Deg Joao who was famous all over North Goa for his splendid food.
There was always a large succulent fish dish dressed with mayonnaise and super
salad, olive oil and olives (can never understand how he managed to do it so
perfectly), besides several other mouthwatering Goan dishes. I can never forget
the Canjo de Galinha (chicken soup). Champagne and the best moscatel always
flowed in abundance.  I dont think (or perhaps dont remember) whiskeys being
served at the time.  I wonder if Deg Joao had any offspring to carry on  after
he passed away.  The band was always Johnson his Jolly boys and at the time,
we all went into a trance listening to his rich baritone singing Portuguese
fados and English
songs, not forgetting the  music for  tangos and waltzes.

[Goanet] ATTACKS ON CATHOLICS BY ANTI-SOCIAL ELEMENTS

2008-09-19 Thread Bonefacio Lopes
 Dear Goans,

Be watchful, alert, cautious, smart, tactful, peaceful, loving and above all
God fearing.

Yesterday it was in Orissa, today in Mangalore tommorrow it may be Goa, so
don't take anything and everything for granted ,police are not going to protect
churches , it's our duty to protect it , our duty to stand up for these
assaults on catholics, our duty to ensure that, churches idols are not
desecrated, who knows tommorrow they may mock the holy eucharist by vandalising
the blessed sacrament.

There must be a big political game being played by some top guns sitting some
where who now feel that it's time to confuse catholics and create a rift
between hindus and catholics as elections are approaching.

Which ever party is trying to play these dirty games and secure votes it
totally wrong and Goans should not get confused , the whole idea is to create
chaos in Goa in the name of religion as the world know Goans are peace loving
people .

It's my humble plea to every goan be it hindu, catholic, muslim or any other to
protect the churches and live in peace and harmony.

When i watched NDTV last night my heart sank and tears rolled when i saw the
idol of Jesus christ damaged .

let's be united in fighting these evils .

[Goanet] IAF pulls its rug under Bangalore

2008-09-19 Thread Philip Thomas
Bial's second runway proposal irks IAF: The air force objects to proposed
location of the runway, saying proximity to its airbase may affect
operations Tarun Shukla
http://www.livemint.com/2008/09/18232153/Bial8217s-second-runway-pro.html?h=
B
New Delhi: Bangalore's new airport, already buffeted by a court case and
controversy over closure of the city-side airport it replaced, has hit
another roadblock ahead of a much-needed expansion.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has objected to the location of a proposed second
runway saying it may be too close to its airbase nearby affecting
operations.
A civil aviation ministry official termed IAF's objections unacceptable
and said it would be asked to re-examine its decision.
Among India's top five airports by traffic, the new Bengaluru International
Airport is facing public interest litigation in the Karnataka high court
over alleged congestion during peak hours. The litigants, including a local
citizens' group in Bangalore, argue that a capital-intensive asset such as
the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL)-run old airport, which has been closed
for commercial traffic since late May, shouldn't be allowed to close,
especially given the long commute time to the new airport.
The new airport, run by Bangalore International Airport Ltd, or Bial, is
some 30km north-east of Bangalore, and was predicated on the old airport not
competing with it.
Over the past few months, under growing criticism, the civil aviation
ministry had asked Bial to speed up the process of second phase of expansion
and match the overcapacity gaps it found in a study of the new airport. This
meant that Bial would need to create a temporary express terminal building
next to the existing terminal before a new runway and terminal can come up
to the south of the current runway.
Construction work for the new runway, Bial says, is expected to start in
July and finish in about three-four years. Planning and design of the runway
is under way.
Locating the new runway to the south of the airport campus, spread over
4,000 acres, will mean restrictions on planes using the new runway because
their flight path may stray into the airspace reserved for IAF's airbase at
Yelahanka close by. **The base is mostly used for helicopter training.**
...we cannot come to the south as four miles (from the existing runway) is
Yelahanka airspace. What we are telling is that a runway closer to Yelahanka
will mean further restrictions, a senior air traffic control official at
Airports Authority of India said, asking not to be identified.
Bangalore airspace has to be carefully managed, the official said, after
three large airspace corridors have emerged in the city, short distance of
each other: that of the Bial airport, the old HAL airport and the Yelahanka
airbase. In addition, the city hosts an airstrip on its northern suburbs
that handles private planes and hobby aviation enthusiasts.
**Aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation, or DGCA, had
proposed that IAF shift its operations to the HAL airport, which is mostly
unused except for charter, private and important [VIP?] aircraft
movements.**
But, IAF has rejected that request. We are not shifting Yelahanka, said
vice chief of air staff air marshal P.V. Naik, adding IAF wanted the new
runway, which will nearly double the capacity of the airport, to be built
north of the existing one. **The airport operator said it had been granted
all clearances including those for the second runway as part of the original
airport master plan finalized in 2004 but is currently in talks to arrive at
a solution after the reservations made by IAF.**
The runways of the airbase at Yelahanka and those of our airport are
absolutely parallel. Nevertheless, the air traffic management is
coordinated. For this reason, **(IAF) had worked out an integrated airspace
management plan which was the basis for its NOC (no-objection certificate)
for our project, a Bial spokeswoman said.**
Since its launch in May, the Bengaluru International Airport has had more
than 2.42 million passengers pass through it and carriers such as Dragon
Air, Tiger Airways, Oman Air and Air Mauritius have also started their
operation recently.
**The Union civil aviation ministry believes a new runway to the north of
the airport is not feasible as it will require further acquisition of
land.** Those (conditions) are not acceptable, a ministry official, who
did not wish to be quoted, said, adding the ministry is asking IAF to relook
at its stance. This is deja vu for us in Goa, right?

Gulab or the Goan Review?

-- jc's response --

My dear Fausto,

You are indeed well within your rights to accord whatever prominence
to whoever in your publication. THAT, I submit to you, is NOT the
question on the table.

The question, I believe, is whether SM Borges has allowed you to do so
or, in fact, advised you NOT to do so.

Your post brings up one important point and misses another:

BRINGS UP: The fact that you are calling him (personally) 'Prosorbab'
or me calling myself 'Fatorbab', is not the issue here. Is SM Borges a
Professor? If so ..where and in what? Isn't it proper that he is
identified appropriately if at all?

In the Gulab articles that I have read of SM Borges, I thought (based
on your 'Prof' byeline) that SM Borges was also a Professor of
Konkani.

MISSES: SM Borges has been a strong and often times intolerant
proponent of Devanagri Konkani. He is almost like those 'Devenagri
only' chaps. I hope you have understood the negative financial
implications for Goans of this Devanagri-only Konkani nonsense.

I ask: IF the Romi script is 'unnatural and foreign' as SM Borges is
quoted as saying (vide infra), WHY, may I ask you, Fausto, Are you
giving prominence in an 'unnatural and foreign' script to the very man
who denigrates the script?

As a reader/supporter (thus far) of Gulab, I strongly advise you (you
may reject this advice) to shun those who have caused damage to our
Konkani - the way we spoke it, speak it and will (hopefully) continue
to speak it .. and more importantly write it. We Goans could certainly
do without the 'brainwashing' some folks are trying to do on us.

Could you or SM Borges, please advise HOW Devanagri became the
natural and native script for our Goan Konkani? Are Aryans native to
Goa? If not, how is their script 'native natural' as opposed to
foreign and unnatural'?

Isn't language a living thing (forget about Gaelic, Pali and
Sanskrit)? Isn't it natural for a language (like cuisine, fashion and
music) to be influenced by the surrounding influences? IF you agree,
would you advise What happened to the Portuguese influence on Konkani?
What happened - was 451 years just a passing phase of a few days?

Are you surprised that more Goans now are migrating to English esp at
weddings and social occasions?

Is English the natural language for Goans?

In closing, I'd say this: I personally believe that Gulab, 'by giving
prominence' to the likes of Romi-Konkani antagonists e.g. SM Borges,
is doing irreversible harm to Konkani.

It is of course your personal prerogative to give prominence to
whoever you choose in your personal publication. That Gulab is your
personal publication is good to know. I will do my part to remind
others of that fact so as to ensure that you remain one of its main
readers.

good wishes

ps: If you choose to abuse me like you have abused Miguel, I will
accept it with grace and you will have the last word on this. I hope
not to respond to you unless you counterpoint is made politely.

If he (Prof. Borges is) so convinced that Devnagari is the natural
script of Konkani then let him write Konkani only in his 'natural'
script and stop immediately to write Konkani in Roman script (foreign,
unnatural, according to him).

[Goanet] What do the Brits of Goa think of us?

The truth may surprise you. While the Brits appear to be very polite and are
experts in hiding their views, they let it all come out when they congregate in
places such as the Goan forum for ex-pat brits at
http://britishexpats.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=94

Reading some of the posts is an eye opener.

Most of the Britis are in Goa, not because they like the locals but because it
is a cheap place in the sun to buy into and exploit cheap local labour. They
indulge in activities that are illegal in any civilised country and that our
community consider immoral.

Due to the vagaries of the international monetary system, the low-income groups
and even the drug addicts of UK are able to enjoy, in Goa, a life style they
can not dream of back home. This new found station in life, undeserved at it
is, seem to have gone to their head. Instead of being grateful, their snobbish
traits have get the better of them. When we are friendly and hospitable to
them, many of them think that it is because they are superior.  They look down

Then they came for me,

[Goanet] 150-year-old cathedral set afire in Madhya Pradesh

2008-09-19 Thread marshallmendonza
Friday, September 19, 2008
150-year-old cathedral set afire in Madhya Pradesh
Bhopal: A 150-year-old church in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur town was set on fire
by two unidentified men, police said on Friday.

The altar and statues inside the 150-year-old St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral
in the cantonment area of Jabalpur, about 300 km from here, were burnt in the
fire Thursday night. The church was closed at the time.

Parish priests told police that the two entered by breaking the glass panes of
the door and set fire to the cathedral altar. The altar, statues of St. Peter
and St. Paul, and the carpet were damaged.
However, fire fighters were alerted and the blaze was soon doused.

“The sisters staying in the building adjoining the boundary wall of the
cathedral spotted the duo fleeing the spot on a motorcycle but could not see
their faces since it was dark,” a police official said.

“A complaint has been lodged against unidentified people in the cantonment
police station and investigation is underway,” Jabalpur District Collector Hari
Ranjan Rao told IANS on phone.

This is the third case of assault on Christian missionaries in the state in the
past few weeks. On Monday, a watchman of Carmel Convent School in Ujjain was
beaten up. Before that, on Aug 31, an 86-year-old church in Ratlam was set on
fire.

[Goanet] About S. S. Ramdas

2008-09-19 Thread Vandana Arun Vaidya
This is concerning the ship S. S. Ramdas which capsized in the
Arabian Sea around 60 years ago. There was some discussion on the tragedy in
goanet two years ago (Aug. 2 and 3, 2006).
I was a School boy in Mumbai at the time (12 years old) and I
clearly remember the tragedy. It happened in 1947 and a lot of the passengers
perished but there were also survivors. The Captain of the ship himself
survuved - there were uncharitable comments about him to the effect that there
was a time when the Captain of a ship insisted on not leaving his sinking ship
until all others had safely left and so many captains went down with their
ships but here is a Captain who saved himself and let several others perish.
The Newspapers of Mumbai were full of the news of the disaster for many weeks.
A public enquiry was also held into the disaster. I recall that the watch of a
survivor was taken as evidence. The watch had stopped at 8:20 indicating that
that was the time the ship went down. To determine the exact date of the
tragedy and other details, one has only to go through the daily papers of that
time. I would definitely have done that if I was in Mumbai. Would some one do
that please?

Rishikesh,
There is nothing to be sorry about. Those with 'professional credentials'

Last week, the USSA nationalized insurance companies.

The concept of lowering taxes, printing more money and borrowing
to spend abroad, has a price. Those with money in the markets
are now paying that price. The only govt that has printed more

BTW, you are right about gold. The liquidity the USSA has been forced to inject

geographical term, not a religious one. The actual religion of the Hindus is
the Sanathana Dharma, which means ‘the ancient way of life’ — a combination of
faith, duties and one’s vocation. Hindus are required to find their purpose in
life and pursue it forever. So in the strict sense of the term, as long as one
lives in India and follows any religion of one’s choice, one is still a Hindu.

People genuinely search for god, and when they cannot find god, they seek after
gurus who will lead them to god. The word guru refers to a person who brings
people from darkness to light. When a person talks about “knowing Christ” (not
knowing about Christ), it is a deep and personal relationship with Jesus
Christ, accepting Him as Saviour and living life according to His principles,
which centre around love and forgiveness. The process has little in common with
evident Christianity with its buildings, rites and rituals. To burn a church is
a tragic act, however, it does not injure Christ.

Further, it is possible to be a Christian and not know Christ; it is equally
possible to be a Hindu and know Christ. Ultimately, who is the true follower of
Christ — the Hindu or the Christian? There are thousands of Indians who know
Christ but do no want to be known as Christians because of the ‘excess baggage’
that accompanies the term, the pain of the past and the indignities that were
imposed on human beings in India by people who called themselves Christian.

In fact, Mahatma Gandhi, when once asked to convert to Christianity, said, “To
me, to be a good Hindu also means that I am a good Christian. There is no need
for me to join your creed to be a believer in the beauty and teachings of
Christ.”

And yet, while it is apparent that most Christians have failed to deliver the
gospel message as god intended them to, Christ does not depend on Christians to
manifest His divine glory and power. Spiritual people need to believe in Christ
and accept Him for what He has done for them and not on what Christians do or
do not do.

The genuine follower of Christ in today’s turbulent times in India will not
meet the hostility through aggression or through a martyr complex, but will try
to undo the damage of the past by living and manifesting the message of the
gospel, which when translated into everyday life, is the message of love.

Meanwhile, every Hindu can also realise that responding to the gospel is not a
contradiction to the Hindu search for truth because Jesus is the fulfilment of
god, of seekers of the Truth right from ancient Vedic times:

Asatoma sat gamaya (Bring me from the unreal to the truth). Jesus says, “I am
the way and the truth and the life”;

Tamasoma jyotir gamaya (Bring me from darkness to light). Jesus says, “I am the
light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will
have the

It was nostalgic to read Patricia Alvares's article on Goa weddings
(September 18th). Weddings of yore were so charming. They were always
held in bungalows or if the homes were not large enough to house the
number of guests invited, a pandal was erected. Although I was a little
girl at the time, I remember the old mest Deg Joao who was famous all over
North Goa for his splendid food. There was always a large succulent fish
dish dressed with mayonnaise and super salad, olive oil and olives (can never
understand how he managed to do it so perfectly), besides several other
mouthwatering Goan dishes. I can never forget the Canjo de Galinha (chicken
soup). Champagne and the best moscatel always flowed in abundance. I dont
think (or perhaps dont remember) whiskeys being served at the time. I wonder
if Deg Joao had any offspring to carry on after he passed away. The band
was always Johnson his Jolly boys and at the time, we all went into a
trance listening to his rich baritone singing Portuguese fados and English
songs, not forgetting the music for tangos and waltzes.Bernice

Missionaries are doing their good work all over India. But how come the attacks

[Goanet] Mangalore Attack - Chief Minister Agrees for Judicial Probe into Church Attacks

2008-09-19 Thread Ancy D'Souza
Mangalore: Chief Minister Agrees for Judicial Probe into Church Attacks
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (MM/SP)

Mangalore, Sep 19: Chief minister B S Yadyurappa has agreed to order
judicial probe into the vandalization of the churches and police
caning incidents that occurred recently in the state.

Addressing a public function organized at Ankola in Uttara Kannada
district on Friday September 19, he said that he had already agreed to
conduct CoD probe into the church related incidents. But the Christian
leaders who met him on Thursday September 18 said that they have no
faith in the CoD probe. Therefore, the state government has decided to
conduct a judicial probe. A retired High Court judge will be appointed
for this purpose, he added.

Meanwhile, the state government has assured the National Commission
for Minorities, of arresting state Bajrangdal convener Mahendra Kumar.
The members of the minority commission met DGP Srikumar, after
visiting various places of worship in and around the city, which came
under attack of the Sangh Parivar activists recently.

Re: [Goanet] Denigration of Hindu Gods

2008-09-19 Thread Fr. Ivo C da Souza

From: Laluram Salvi [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The Following are the list of abuses from one such book – Satya
Darshini –

distributed by the missionaries of New Life. This book is in Kannada and the
translation of the abusive passage is as follows.
Urvashi – the daughter of Lord Vishnu – is a prostitute. Vashitha is the son
of this prostitute. He in turn married his own Mother. Such a degraded
person is the Guru of the Hindu God Rama. (page 48)
When Krishna himself is wallowing in darkness of hell, how can he enlighten
others? Since Krishna himself is a shady character, there is a need for us
to liberate his misled followers. (page 50)
It was Brahma himself who kidnapped Sita. Since Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva
were themselves the victims of lust, it is a sin to consider them as Gods..
(page 39)

***Dear Laluram Salvi,
I do not know what is your level of knowledge of Hinduism.
Yet, it is hurting for your religious feelings what was written by New Life
members.
I do respect your feelings. The reaction to it cannot be violence against
all the Christians, the churches and the
houses of prayer throughout three districts of Mangalore, Udupi and
Chikmangalur.
Action against unauthorized prayer halls cannot be left to militant
groups.

You can always protest to the members in a peaceful way. There are laws
against conversions by force. You have to prove them. Catholic school in
Bicholim

has been open to all. Never was any conversion by force.
Religion cannot lead you to such dastardly acts of vandalism and
hooliganism...

...in the premises of Milagres Church in Mangalore,

where some miscreants had damaged a Jesus idol.
***Jesus is not an idol for the Christians. It is good that you call them
miscreants, as they have proved to be.

The VHP and the Bajrang Dal

have condemned the attack at this place.
***Everyone with good sense should condemn it. But who has done it?
Who owns the responsibility for such a profanation and destruction of the
Indian soil and values?

Following this incident, a Christian mob gathered and the situation went
out of control as the mob

started pelting stones and disrupting traffic. The police was forced to
intervene and this resulted in unsavoury violence.
***Are you sure of the facts? Which is the source of your information?
Even in the Kandhamal murder — which involved the killing of Hindu monk
Swami

Lakshmananda by missionaries – seems to have caste a shadow on this incident
since the general public seems to have seen through Christian aggression.
***Have the missionaries killed the Swamiji? Do you have evidence?
Does this false accusation authorize the vandalism which took place in
Orissa in the name of Hindu religion?

Let peace prevail in our country!

[Goanet] Orissa Voilence

2008-09-19 Thread Fr. Ivo C da Souza

From: Laluram Salvi [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Lot of articles have been written on Goanet on violence in Orissa which
reflects only one side of it. Most of the post were influenced by biased
opinions of anti Hindu journalist and media.

***Dear Laluram Salvi,
I do not know who you are. You know who I am. I do not defend anyone who has
done wrong.
You speak about one side of it (violence in Orissa). Which is the other
side? Do you know well the facts?

You have the right to expose them.

The Christian fanatics led by the local Congress MP and other hooligans

suspected to be from the local chapter of the World Vision of India were
responsible for killing the swami and four other people including a woman
and two minors.
***Are you sure of the facts? You are involving Christian fanatics (all
Christians?),
local Congress MP and other hooligans suspected to be from the local
chapter
of the World Vision of India in the killing of the Swamiji. Who has killed
him?
Christians, Congress politician and hooligans? Could not Police identify the
murderers?

This in turn led to retaliation by Swami's followers which

led to a violent backlash against churches and Christian missionaries in
Orissa.
***Do you agree with it? Retaliation against churches and Christian
missionaries in Orissa?

Some of them will not even know him. Can you be their spokesman?

...and was a well
planned attempt by these missionaries. The WVI is a fundamentalist
organization committed to harvesting hatred against hindus in India.
***Again, do you know the facts? Can you club all together?

But you will not see any of it in the news. For starters, this ghastly

incident was first blamed on Maoists or Naxalites.
***Who has blamed the Maoists?

This was a disingenuous

attempt to divert the attention away from Christian fanatics who did this.
***Again, are you sure that Christian fanatics did this? If you prove that
some Christians did it
---nothing of this has been proved--can you persecute the Christian
communities, destroy the churches,
orphanages, hospitals, institutions, rape nuns, kill priests, burn social
workers, attack schools,
kill and bury Christians, who happen to be tribals, poorest of the poor,
neglected, ostracised,

enslaved by the high-class Hindu communities?

...every newspaper article including the Times of India, Business

Standard, NYT, Reuters to name a few - had this in the story - lower caste
Hindus tried to convert to Christianity, the evil swami was preventing them,
the peaceful Christians suffered and then mysteriously the Maoists killed
the swami.
***Again, you are not proving anything. Why is not the Government conducting
a probe?
Tribals are not Hindus, they are animists and regarded as outcaste by
Hindus.

Some of them became Buddhists, others Christian, and some Hindus. Yet,
they cannot enter the Hindu temples and inter-dine with the higher caste
Hindus. Is this not true?

What a bunch of lies!!! The Fact is that the swami has been there for the

last 42 years doing social service including orphanages for girls and poor
Hindus. If he was a Christian, he would have been declared a Father Teresa
and awarded the Bharat Ratna. His only drawback is that he is a Hindu.
***Do you know his activity? Whether for 42 years or 24 years, he has done
some good.
Was he inciting people against the Christians? Was he forcing the tribals
for re-conversion to Hindu religion?
Being a Christian, Mother Teresa of Calcutta has not converted people by
force,
she has catered to all without any discrimination, people with maggots,
unwanted by all, even by family members,
she has not incited anyone to violence. Her secret is that she worked with
faith in God
for her little brethren, the poorest of the poor. She worked throughout the
world through her Congregation of Sisters of Charity.
She received all kinds of international awards for the selfless work that
she did. Christian missionaries
have been working for the poor people in Orissa before 1885. Why could not
the Swamiji
and his admirers work for the Dalits with the same selfless love? Are these
lies?

... the Christian missionaries there are hardly peaceful. They tried to
kill the swami some 9 times before and succeeded in the tenth. In this
attempt they used automatics and lobbed grenades including killing a
small child and a lady.
***Where is the truth? Has anyone investigated it? If the Christian
missionaries and people
had automatics and lobbed grenades, how could they not defend themselves
against the hooligans who
destroyed their houses and injured and killed some of them? Precisely
because they are peaceful people.

Are you sure that these are not a bunch of lies?

Hindu can be beaten, bullied, shouted at, abused and the truth will never
come out. This is the sad saga of Hindu history over millennia.

***For this you may have to re-write history...

Hopefully this act will atleast start some people to question the
bonafides of peaceful christianity...In

At the same time you are asking a question which makes no sense.
Then again you are answering your own question in your last line.
TUM QUITEM BEKAR ASSAI?
ED.
---
Most of the Britis?are in Goa, not because they like the locals but because it
is a cheap place in the sun to buy into and exploit cheap local labour. They
indulge in activities that are illegal in any civilised country and that?our
community consider immoral.
?
Due to the vagaries of the international monetary system, the low-income groups
and even the drug addicts of UK are able to enjoy, in Goa, a life style they
can not dream of back home. This new found station in life, undeserved at it
is, seem to have gone to their head. Instead of being grateful, their snobbish
traits have get the better of them. When we are friendly and hospitable to
them,?many of them?think that it is because they are superior. ?They look down
on and despise?us at every chance they get.

Dear Santosh,
As the famous line in, Alice in Wonderland goes, this get curiouser and
curiouser. I found Ingrid's article to be a bit of a wagging finger, at
Christians. Let me quote the lines which I find particularly objectionable.
I've taken these from the original article.

INGRID WRITES:
All this unnecessary furore over burning churches, buildings and bridges

MY RESPONSE: I think a furore is necessary when one sees the pictures of
charred children left after a VHP rampage.

INGRID WRITES:
It really is a battle of semantics because when you get down to it, neither
Hinduism nor Christianity are religions — both are lifestyles.

MY RESPONSE:
Lifestyle? If I choose to eat oysters everyday, that maybe a lifestyle choice
but a religion is a belief system and belief systems are inherent in defining a
society's collective acts.

INGRID WRITES:
When a person talks about “knowing Christ” (not knowing about Christ), it is a
deep and personal relationship with Jesus Christ, accepting Him as Saviour and
living life according to His principles, which centre around love and
forgiveness. The process has little in common with evident Christianity with
its buildings, rites and rituals. To burn a church is a tragic act, however, it
does not injure Christ.

MY RESPONSE: No burning a church does not injure Christ, but locking up a nun
and setting fire to her, had done a lot to injure humanity as a whole.

INGRID WRITES:
Further, it is possible to be a Christian and not know Christ; it is equally
possible to be a Hindu and know Christ. Ultimately, who is the true follower of
Christ — the Hindu or the Christian?

MY RESPONSE: Ms Ingrid should make up her mind about exactly which religious
sentiment she is trying to patronise. Calling Hindu's followers of Christ or
even Christ-like is patronising at its worst. Why on earth should they follow
Christian role-models, when they have plenty of their own.

INGRID WRITES:
There are thousands of Indians who know Christ but do no want to be known as
Christians because of the ‘excess baggage’ that accompanies the term, the pain
of the past and the indignities that were imposed on human beings in India by
people who called themselves Christian

MY RESPONSE:
excess baggage? What's that? That's what I pay $5 per kilo at the airport
for, but I certainly don't carry the sins of my forefathers on my head. Why
should I? Are we all to be held accountable in perpetuity for history's
mistakes?

INGRID WRITES:
The genuine follower of Christ in today’s turbulent times in India will not
meet the hostility through aggression or through a martyr complex, but will try
to undo the damage of the past by living and manifesting the message of the
gospel, which when translated into everyday life, is the message of love.

MY RESPONSE:
Ah yeah, the clincher. Christians must live their lives so as to undo the
damage of the past. And what might that be Ms Ingrid? Let me see, the
Inquisition, the Crusades, the destruction of Sodom or Gomorrah? Exactly how
far must we go to undo the damage of the past, done by foreign nations undo
indigenous people, all of whom were my ancestors, and all of whom were
blameless.

Ingrid, reminds me of the police inspector who upon finding a rape victim,
insist that they should have behaved themselves.

Dear Herald re: It's rain thunder against communal violence!,

My good friend, Dr Francisco Colaco is a well known cardiologist who
is smart enough to make his diagnosis and provide treatment with
resorting to surgery - for, a Cardiac Surgeon he is not.

Why are your glibly reporting that he is one?

Would you please ensure that your alleged No Name reporters get their
facts right.

This reporter is being very careless indeed .and not for the
first time this month..

Would you please promote him to the post of chaprassi for a week please

sincerely

[Goanet] Analysis paralysis over a second airport

2008-09-19 Thread Philip Thomas
This is a story about the city of Sydney's second airport which keeps being
talked about but nothing ever gets done to realise it.
http://blogs.smh.com.au/urbanjungle/2008/09/sydneys_disappe.html
Sydney's disappearing second airport The search for a second airport has
become a great Sydney tradition. **For decades** those for and against a new
**major airport** have fought their way across the political landscape. The
battle field has been quiet for a while, but things are about to start up
once again...The melancholy history of the search for a second airport is
worth revisiting for a moment, because it suggests that when the smoke
clears this time around, the forces of inertia might well triumph yet
again...What do you think? Does Sydney need a **second major airport**? And
if so, where? Posted by Michael Duffy September 18, 2008 12:30 PM The
article itself is somewhat featureless especially for those alien to the
Australian scene. The comments on it are however quite illuminating. But
what is striking is that it has not been possible for some unknown reason
for Australians to take out a real option on the second airport and dilate
on it over time instead of just resorting to talk. Maybe its the power of
incumbents viz the (private) owners of the first airport. As in the case of
Goa the stumbling block may be the tendency to opt for a major airport
instead of a willingness to start small and build up according to demand.
Let's hope Goa can show the way at Mopa by being innovative and effective.
