[Goanet] British paper--The Times-- urges immediate central action to halt Orissa violence

2008-10-13 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
Every country has its ignoramuses and demagogues.  It is the intelligentsia
that stokes these characters. The pseudo-intellectuals, under some guise or
ignorance,  write articles that use / abuse history and factual details.  We
have seen this innumerable times on Goanet, where writers pounded their egos.

Catholics and Hindus who have written anti-Christian and anti-religion
posts should examine their writings and now pound their chest in remorse.

The remorse should stem from the wasted years when these intellectuals were
engrossed with the ills of the medieval period while ignoring what was going on
under our nose in our neighborhood and environment.

Regards, GL

 - Alfred de Tavares

The Times claim 59 Christians killed while India's official figure has
throughout remained fixed at 35.  British paper urges immediate central action
to halt Orissa violence

London, Oct 11 (IANS) Declaring that the Manmohan Singh government is
unwilling or unable to intervene in stopping anti-Christian violence, a
leading British daily Saturday called for immediate deployment of federal
troops in Orissa and the arrest of Hindu militants.  The Times, in a editorial
titled 'India's Shame', named the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Vishwa
Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal as the forces behind the carnage in
Orissa.

The 2002 massacre of 2,000 Muslims in Gujarat exposed the ever-present danger
of communal violence when exploited by demagogues.

The Mapusa Friday Market

Mapusa is the hub of Goa's Bardez Taluka. It is the most important town in
Goa north of the Mandovi. Mapusa has always been the market for village
produce in Bardez, besides being an outlet for goods from Pernem and
Bicholim talukas. People from villages surrounding Mapusa like Bastora,
Moira, Tivim, Assagao, Siolim, Guirim, erla, Parra and far flung villages
like Pomburpa, Aldona, Ucassaim, Calangute, Pilerne and Saligao have always
gravitated towards Mapusa for their purchases as well for selling produce
and doing official work connected with litigation, births, deaths and
marriages.

[Goanet] FINANCIAL OR MORAL MELTDOWN

2008-10-13 Thread Averthan D'Souza
For favour of publication. Kindly acknowledge receipt. =Averthanus=
  _

FINANCIAL OR MORAL MELTDOWN ?

Averthanus L. D'Souza.

The entire world is gripped with anxiety about the deteriorating
situation of the Financial Institutions all over the globe. As President
George W. Bush put it - it is a case of anxiety feeding on anxiety which is
bringing about the collapse of the entire banking system. Contrary to all
their proclaimed policies of non-intervention in the affairs of the banking
system, Government after Government has intervened to take over the many
Banks which were going into liquidation. In effect, this is the collapse of
the Capitalist system, although no one is calling it that. Unlike the
Great Crash of 1929, one does not see long queues of people lining up
outside their Banks to withdraw their deposits. What is happening, instead,
is an invisible run on the Banks. There is an internal haemorrhaging within
the Banking system. Banks are refusing to lend money even to other Banks
because they are not confident of getting their money back. This is being
euphemistically described as a crisis of confidence.Individual
Governments are taking steps to restore confidence in the Banking system,
but they have realized that in a rapidly globalizing world, national efforts
alone cannot stem the meltdown. This is a global problem which needs to be
addressed globally. Ideological differences have become irrelevant and
antiquated. Both Capitalism and Socialism (even in its more radical
manifestation of communism) simply have to be abandoned in the face of the
global financial crisis. The political response of Governments needs to be
coordinated.

The common man is simply baffled by all the technical jargon
which he encounters in the media. The analyses of the various charts of
the different Stock Exchanges does not make any sense to him. He does not
understand how the reduction in the Bank Rate of the country can be helpful
in preventing the further loss of confidence in the ability of the Banks to
honour their commitments to their depositors.People in the United States
of America and in Europe, particularly, are apprehensive about retaining
their jobs; they are worried about repaying the huge loans which they took
to buy their houses, their cars, their refrigerators and washing machines
and other equipment. Unemployment and poverty stare them in the face.

The scenario is indeed bleak; and the people do not know where
to turn for redress. They do not understand the labyrinthine processes
which operate within the Banking system. They deposited their money in the
Banks in good faith and their good faith has been abused by the Banks
which seem to have cheated them out of their money.

The question which looms large is not simply a matter of
Financial Management or of Economics. It is primarily a moral question.
Have the Banks and the other Financial Institutions respected the trust
which the common man has placed in them? Did the Banks really manage the
money wisely, or did they exploit their depositors and use their money
unwisely? To what extent are the Banks morally obliged to repay the money
which they have taken from their clients? Does a declaration of bankruptcy
exonerate them from their obligations? Are the Boards of Directors of the
failed Banks to be held responsible for their Banks going bankrupt? If
so, what penalties should be meted out to them? Who is to bring them to
book? These are not merely academic questions. They need to be addressed
if we are to get to the roots of the problem.

One thing is quite clear - viz. that all the attention is
presently focussed on the symptoms. The media, the financial experts, Fund
Managers and Commentators are describing the problem from their respective
points of view, and speculating about the gradual unfolding of the global
crisis. Very strangely, indeed, no one appears to be looking deeper than the
symptoms to determine the root cause of the problem. They are appealing
to the Governments to take charge of the deteriorating situation. To a
man of common sense it appears obvious that the solution will be effective
only if the cure is applied to the root cause of the problem. And the root
cause, appears to be that the entire global financial edifice has been built
on the shifting sands of greed and avarice. Greed has been
institutionalized. Businesses as well as individuals have been encouraged
to spend money which they do not have. Consumerism has been idolized. We
have built for ourselves the Golden Calf of Mammon - the Credit system.
(Ironically, the Bull represents growth in the Stock Market.) Any house
built on sand is bound, sooner or later, to collapse. It is clear that the
present crisis - which is also being called a financial tsunami - has not
come about spontaneously. It has had a long

I fully agree with Mr Venantius, sincerely. I’m sure he is definitely more
qualified than S.S.C. (and I don’t need an affidavit for that). My post on this
thread needs to be read in between the lines, and has been deliberately drafted
the way it is for legal implications. In fact the last sentence of the post is
more than sufficient to realise that my ire is not against the women
organisations. The headings and news clip should give an obvious conclusion.
Coming back to women organisations, I personally am in touch with Goa and am
aware of women organisations that have done a lot of good work, but have never
publicised their work. I have not generalised women organisations by saying
“All the women organisations”. Let me remind you of the recent story of the
publicity type. It was on all newspaper that due to timely action of this
organisation an infant that was being sold, was rescued. The infant was sent to
“Apna Ghar”, only to be neglected and die of ant bites. A great work done by
these publicity seeking organisations

Destruction: Parish churches – 5, Village Churches – 48, Convents – 5,
Hostels – 7, Leprosy centre -1, Vocational Training Centre – 1
Vehicles – not surveyed, Animals killed – not surveyed

Still Counting…. (violence 2008) in Kandhamal Orissa
Death confirmed: 45, priests/ pastors/ nuns seriously .injured: 10,
Priests kidnapped : 2, Houses demolished in 160 villages : 4300,
Institutions/ schools destroyed : 7, Churches/Chapels : 101, Convents

Forest was the only refuge….. to the people of Kandhamal
About 50,000 people fled to the forests, Shops Houses Owned by
Christians are destroyed completely

What is happening today?
12,000 persons in the refugees camps, Little medical care, No
rehabilitation taking place, 40,000 people still hiding in forests, On
return, people are forced to forsake faith, No Christian Leader is
allowed to visit.
Note: The actual figures are much more than the above as of now the
confirmed death is gone up to 52.

Christian Organizations are not allowed to do relief works of Christians ……….
WHEREAS……In the Super Cyclone other natural calamities Christian
NGOs and church groups were first to set up relief and rehabilitation
works in Orissa

Orissa is not alone….
Hate Crimes against Christians in several states
Prominent are Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh,
Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu
On Sep. 14th 2008 in Karnataka, 14 churches attacked, Blessed
Sacrament desecrated, statues broken, even cloistered nuns were not
spared. Total churches, institutions attacked in Karnataka are 36.

Organised Crime Statistics
In the year 1998 50 cases
In the year 2000 100 cases
In the year 2007 1000 cases
In the year 2008 4000 cases

The Allegation For Hate is Missionaries convert the masses to
Christianity. Christians receive foreign funds for conversion

Here are the facts about these allegations

YearChristian Population in Percentage
19712.59 %
19812.43 %
19912.32 %
20012.04 %

More facts…….

In India, every year, over 15 million students go through the portals
of Christian Institutions. Can any one prove that even one out a
million of these students is converted as the result of missionary
activities?

Most leaders of the organizations who spread hatred against Christians
send their children and grand children to church-run schools

Still More Facts ……...

The constitution of India provides ample safeguards against fraudulent
conversions

Several states have passed laws aiming at preventing conversion
through force, fraud and inducement

STILL IN THE PAST SIX DECADES OF INDEPENDENT INDIA'S HISTORY NOT A
SINGLE CASE OF FORCED OR FRAUDULENT CONVERSION WAS PROVED/PROSECUTED

Was the government sleeping?Surely government must ensure a level playingn

and if not, whose fault? The situation is very complicated and such inciteful

[Goanet] British paper urges immediate central action to halt Orissa violence

2008-10-13 Thread Goa's Pride www.goa-world.com
British paper urges immediate central action to halt Orissa violence
Indo-Asian News Service

London, Oct 11 (IANS) Declaring that the Manmohan Singh government is
“unwilling or unable” to intervene in stopping anti-Christian violence, a
leading British daily Saturday
called for immediate deployment of federal troops in Orissa and the arrest of
Hindu militants. The Times, in a editorial titled 'India's Shame', named the
Rashtriya Swayamsevak
Sangh (RSS), Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bajrang Dal as the forces
behind the carnage in Orissa.

It said neither the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government nor the one in
Orissa had moved to quell the spreading violence, in which 300
Christian-majority villages
had been destroyed, 4,400 houses burnt, 50,000 people made homeless and 59
Christians killed and 18,000 injured since Aug 24.

“Dr [Manmohan] Singh should need no prompting from the Vatican or concerned
Christian groups in the West. An effective federal police force should be sent
to Orissa and
swiftly deployed. Instigators should be arrested and curfews imposed. And all
India should resist this attempt to destroy the very basis of its polity and
prosperity: its democracy and diversity. Without tolerance, both count for
little,” the newspaper said.

“The attacks on the Christians are a national disgrace, the more despicable
because many were once lower-caste Hindus who changed their faith to escape a
life of servitude and
humiliation. Unless this persecution is quickly halted, its scale could grow
and spread,” it added.

“The 2002 massacre of 2,000 Muslims in Gujarat exposed the ever-present danger
of communal violence when exploited by demagogues.”

[Goanet] SPACE PEN - Monday-muse (13 Oct 08)

2008-10-13 Thread Pravin Sabnis
MONDAY MUSE (13 October 2008)

Space Pen

My friend brought me a very special gift from London: a replica of the writing
instrument used by Soviet cosmonauts on early manned space flights. He had
heard of the writing instrument from me. And I had read about it in some
version of Modern Myths. The story went thus:

When NASA first started sending astronauts into outer space, they stumbled upon
a major problem: they realized that the ball-point pen would not work at zero
gravity. But the determined Americans were made of stern stuff. The search for
the alternative began in full earnest.

A million dollar investment and two years of tests and toil by the best of
their brains, the Americans developed a very special space pen that could write
at zero gravity, work upside down, on almost any surface and at temperatures
ranging from freezing to high extremes.

The modern myth further mentioned that when confronted with the same problem,
the Russians used a pencil!

So often we waste our time, money and energy on searching for alternatives when
the answer may be staring us in our face. Quite often, the way out is exactly
the one we are standing on. Advancement is all about being able to notice the
solutions that lie in our grasp instead of ignoring the obvious and pursuing
stranger substitutes.

To BE BETTER at finding a remedy for any ailment under the sun…
Just look around and you are likely to find an already available one!

Deflationary pressures on fuel, housing and consumables, along with the
current stock melt down clearly suggest
to me that we may be heading towards a period of little or no inflation at

have large amounts of cash are sitting pretty at the moment. In this

These ARE strange times. Deflation is possible. Hey! the US is in its the worst

At some point, reality will sink in. As a prelude, in a role reversal, the

Bloody cheek to state: barging in on a dicussion, when the same was
said of him, he contended that this was a public forum and anyone and
everyone could participate. Seems that, what is sauce for the Goose is
not sauce for the Gander!

This is for the man, who runs with the hare and hunts with the hounds.
Defender of the Whites, who puts down the Blacks. Nanny State indeed,
the blacks have not been given the opportunitysimple as that.

Mario observes:

Gabe,

Barging in on a discussion is never a problem. It is barging in with
information or comments that are bloody factless or out of context or without
perspective that is, however, always a problem.

Take the bloody comments above for example. Here we see the US on the verge of
possibly electing a black man as President of the USA, the country has already
had the last two Secretaries of State from the black community, several Cabinet
ministers in the last two administrations who are black, several blacks in
Congress, several black major city Mayors and city Councilmen and women,
numerous black major corporate CEOs, and yet we see a comment that reads,
the blacks have not been given the opportunitysimple as that.
Apparently, not so simple.

The suitable word for opposite of an informed person escapes me at the
moment:-))

BTW, how many blacks have achieved such positions in Britain?

Regarding the title, did you know that President Abe Lincoln who led the war to
free the slaves was a Republican? Did you know that most of the old time
racists in America were Democrats who opposed the Civil Rights Act in 1964,
which would have never passed without Republican votes? Did you know that one
of the prominent Democrat Senators who voted against the Civil Rights Act of
1964 was Sen. Al Gore, Sr? Did you know that the seniormost Democrat in the US
Senate, Robert Byrd, used to be a sheet-wearing member of the Ku Klux Klan?
Did you know that the political mentor of Democrat President Bill Clinton was a
Senator William Fulbright who was an arch segregationist? Did you know that
the Democrats have controlled both houses of the US Congress since the 2006
elections?

Obviously, you didn't know any of this.

Gabe wrote:

Since when is it a racial abuse to ask a boy to sit down to stop

Your kids are smart for marrying white Americans in an attempt to improve the

Maybe. Maybe not. Can't say for sure without interviewing their parents. It
all depends on when their ancestors came to the US and what they did for a

But, how is it that your kids are married to Americans and you are asking in
the year 2008 whether Indians are considered black in America? Wow! Doesn't
speak very well for living in Britain.

I wonder what the conversations must be like at family re-unions:-))

[Goanet] On the anniversary of the concentration camp o f Pondá

2008-10-13 Thread Gabriel de Figueiredo
On the anniversary of the concentration camp of Pondá
Carlos Morais
in: Expresso, 30 March 2006

19 March was the 44th anniversary of an unforgettable episode that took place
in the Prisoners' Camp of Pondá, in Goa, where 1750 Portuguese soldiers were
incarcerated, after the Indian Union invasion of that territory [Goa], on the
night of 17 December 1961.

Three of our soldiers planned to escape, making use of the van that collected
garbage daily. Scheming with the team in charge of this service, they decided
to lie low in the garbage container of the van. They were intending, once out,
to escape.

Just as the vehicle stopped at the guarded exit, for no reason, the Portuguese
sargeant in charge of the garbage-collection team decided to denounce the
escape of three soldiers to the Indian commandant. The three, noticing what was
going on, got off the van and tried to escape. One of them still managed to
succeed in escaping, mingling with the our soldiers. This resulted in an
environment of agitation and nervousness. The field commander, an Indian major,
gathered together the Portuguese officials and communicated to them that if
cases of this nature were to happen again, he would be obliged to shoot the
persons responsible. Commander Pinto da Cruz, the most senior officer, still
verbally resisted the threat, but the Indian major was absolute.

At around 18h30, there was an unexpected call to fall in order. When the
prisoners had fallen in line, brigadier Sagat Singh, general-commander of the
Prisoners' Camps of Goa arrived. He declared to us that there had been an act
of indiscipline and that he had presented himself there to resolve it.

On what occurred later, Fr. Joaquim Ferreira da Silva (SJ), chaplain of the
Prisoners' Camp of Pondá, later wrote in an article for the magazine
«Magificat»:

«The Indian brigadier arrived (...) He ordered the soldiers to fall to order
and asked if anyone wanted to punish the informer. Contrary to expectation, the
boys answered in chorus: ' All! ’ The man was going towards the wire-fence. The
brigadier asked if they had understood well. And the answer was the same: '
All! ’ He then ordered a firing squad to prepare themselves and to load the
machine guns. He had bazookas and mortars placed outside, in front and at the
rear. An incalculable tension reigned, when the least incident could be enough
for everthing to explode. The boys, nervous, could not restrain themselves. A
voice is then heard: 'Any one who moves will be shot down’.

I was convinced that it was my obligation to intervene, and, in spite of the
final threat, I walked with slow but sure steps, with my eyes on the brigadier
(...). Having been informed that I was the chaplain, he shouted irritably:
‘Come forward!’ And I went forward. I requested permission to speak and
requested him if I could say saying something to the men, as chaplain. But the
answer was emotionless: 'No! It is too late! It is necessary to teach all a
lesson’.

I insisted, requesting him to give to the men an opportunity. He denied again,
asking if we had been mistreated at anytime. I answered no, but that we had
already suffered enough and we deserved another opportunity. Again he said 'no'
without emotion, and turning around he ordered the firing squad forward.

I started on a last desperate appeal, convinced this would be useless: 'Sir,
gives us an opportunity. This has been the first time. There was no reason,
except as a complaint. Please give us an opportunity’. ‘All right then’, he
answered, ‘but tell them this would be the last time’.

I thanked, saluted and approached the formation, where the men were awaiting
for over twenty minutes, and said them: 'Friends and comrades: none of us can
stop condemning the action of that comrade who incited us to revolt. We can,
however, and should have interpreted well his intention. Justice will be done,
but not here nor will it be up to us to do it but for the one who has the right
to do it. Remember your parents and mothers who long to hug you from afar.
Conserve your courage for a more opportune occasion, where you might be better
able to use it in the service of the homeland. Are you willing to do as I ask?
The answer was in unison: 'We are’.

I then approached the brigadier and told him that the soldiers were willing to
do what he asked them. ‘All right then’, he answered, ‘but they have to
apologise’. I went again to the formation: 'Boys, the brigadier would like an
apology’. After they apologised in chorus, the brigadier was content. I
thanked, saluted and went away. The storm had ended. All the officers who met
me huggged and congratulated me. But I had been only a happy instrument in the
hands of divine providence».

This self-sacrificing and courageous attitude of Fr. Joaquim Ferreira da Silva
saved us certainly of a disgrace of unpredictable consequences. We all owe him
one. It is lamentable, however, that at official level and at

Archbishop of Goa and Daman makes maiden visit to the UAE

By William Faria

DUBAI: The Archbishop of Goa and Daman, His Grace Filipe Neri Ferrao has
landed in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE)making his maiden visit
to this Gulf region.

The week-long visit started off with His Grace witnessing the All Goa
Inter-village football tournament that took place at the Irani Stadium in
Dubai.

According to an official programme released by St. Mary's Goan Sodality,
Dubai His Grace also led a Solemn High Mass in Konkani at St. Mary's Church
on Saturday.

The Gulf region especially the UAE has a large population of Roman Catholics
that include the Goan and Manglorean communities.

His Grace is also expected to visit the other emirates of the UAE that
includes churches in Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah, Jebel Ali, Abu Dhabi and
Sharjah.

On October 17 there will be another Holy mass in Konkani at the Dubai church
at 2 pm, followed by a series of Cultural programme and felicitation at St.
Mary's school compound adjacent to the church.

Hundreds of Catholic faithful, including the Phillipino, Lebanese, Syrian
and other Arab region communities welcomed HIs Grace at a colourful ceremony
at St. Mary's Church in Dubai.

Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao who hails from Aldona was born on 20th
January, 1953. He was ordained as Bishop on 10th April, 1994.

Filipe Neri Ferrao, who has been appointed as the Archbishop in January,
2004 by his Holiness Pope John Paul II, is the 34th Archbishop of Goa and
Daman and the seventh Patriarch of the East Indies, since the inception of
the Church in Goa in the 16 century.

Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, Archbishop Pedro Lopez Quintana,
installed Ferrao the Archbishop-designate in his Episcopal seat, in a solemn
religious ceremony at the Sé Cathedral at Old Goa, on March 21 the same
year.

The colourful ceremony was attended by tens of thousands of Catholic
faithful, religious leaders and others dignitaries.

Outgoing Archbishop Raul Gonsalves, then aged 75 handed over the crozier
(episcopal staff) to Ferrao, having served for 25 years. (ends)

[Goanet] Qua Vadis Inhuman Singh?

2008-10-13 Thread tony martin
You have heard of Sardarji jokes. But this is about a Sardarji joker.
The tragedy is that this joker finds himself in a chair he does not
fit in. Read on.
Orissa is a cauldron. Scores of unchecked daylight murders, rapes of
nuns, naked public parades of priests, over 2,000 Christian houses
torched, over 140 churches and prayer halls attacked and desecrated,
thousands of people on the run for their life without bare essentials.
Almost two months later the violent attacks against the Christian
minorities continue unchecked and unhindered. The State government is
only basking in the success of its 'cleaning' act.
This is not something unprecedented. It is an old trick that has been
tried and found to work. L K Advani and Narendra Modi will bet their
souls it does.
It began in 1992 with the Babri demolition during the reign of another
wavering nincompoop called PVNR who was too weak to take a step or
even speak a word without gasping for breath. To the rest of the world
the destruction of the Babri Masjid represents an assault on
civilization. To the BJP it was a roller coaster ride to power.
And even before the debris of that unfortunate mosque was barely
cleared venomous reptiles of the Sadhvi Rithambara type were unleashed
to inject further poison. Remember those fiery speeches, Muslims are
like lemon which when squeezed into the gentle milk of Hindu kindness
turns it sour.
If these were not enough we also had vicious inanities spewed at us by
the likes of Bal Thackeray, If Hussein can step into Hindustan what
is wrong if we enter his house? The senseless statement came as a
justification for the conduct of the Bajrang Dal activists who stormed
into the South Bombay apartment of M F Hussein aggrieved over one of
his paintings depicting Sita.
The murders of missionaries, rapes and all sorts of crimes against the
minorities in all parts of the country that followed have over the
years made life full of uncertainty and fear for the minorities in the
country making a mockery of Tagore's Where the Mind is Without Fear.
Then came the Gujarat communal carnage which saw thousands of men,
women, children and babies burnt alive in a tragedy that can only be
described as unparalleled in its gruesome intensity in the history of
the country.
India, the Christians in particular, is at the mercy of some pillaging
fanatics. And a Sardarji moron called Inhuman Singh is contemplating
national debate on whether the Bajrang Dal and the VHP should be
banned or not even as the fires at Orissa continue to rage with
increasing intensity and impunity almost two months later.
Do we have a government at the Center or just a bunch of indecisive
nincompoops who have lost their balls (top or bottom doesn't matter)
caught up in their obsession for power.
The British Newspaper The Times has urged immediate action from the
Centre to halt the Orissa carnage. It is a shame that an international
newspaper should induce our leaders to act in favour of its own
people.
India is my country and I am proud of its heritage but I am sick of
its avaricious political leaders and its rotten politics and the
Hindutvas and everything that is turning this erstwhile land of milk
and honey into a living hell for those who only have to swear by their
daily bread if not cake.

I refer to the article Orissa violence*Kandhamal and Bengaluru** by S

I would like to pose a few questions to Rina since she thought it fit to post
such an article:

1. Do you agree or endorse the views of the author? If yes, why?
2. Do you condone the violence against christians in Orissa, Karnataka, Kerala,
Tamil Nadu, MP and elsewhere? Or do you believe that such violence has not / is
not taking place but is merely a figment of everyone's imagination?
3. Do you believe that the violent activities of the VHP / BD are good for the
country? If yes, why?
4. Do you endorse or support the idea of taking law into one's own hands and
administering real or perceived justice?
5. Can you provide official data, facts, evidence, proofs, statistics to support
the contention of the author?
6. Do you support the hindutva ideology that christian and muslim minorities
can only live as second class citizens of this nation?

I look forward to your response.

[Goanet] 'Mass religious conversions must be checked'

NEW DELHI: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that mass
religious conversions must be checked to ensure peace and also pressed the
central government to approve the state's long pending anti-terror law.
Mass religious conversions by coercion and allurement must be checked to
ensure peace in the society, Modi said at the meeting of the National
Integration Council (NIC) here.
Communal peace is often disturbed in the society because of such activities,
he added.
Modi also sought expeditious approval of the Gujarat Control of Organised Crime
(GUJCOC) bill, which has been hanging fire for more than four years.
I once again urge the union government to expedite approval of GUJCOC, Modi
said.
He also sought a national consensus to isolate people, groups, and so-called
intellectuals supporting those indulging in terror activities.
Deterrent punishment is necessary to keep the youth away from such
indoctrination, Modi added

Shredders to solve plastic issue

The panchayats in the jurisdiction of Canacona taluka
will soon be free of plastic waste, informed Mr Arvind
Kutkar, Block Development Officer (BDO), Canacona.
In a bid to rid their wards of plastic waste, all the seven
village panchayats of the taluka will utilise the plastic
shredding machine, like the one that has been installed
at Shristhal village panchayat recently.

Speaking to 'The Navhind Times', Mr Kutkar said that
the plastic shredder is ready for commissioning and will
be operational, most likely on October 13.

The shredding machine was purchased some six months
ago by the previous BDO, Mr Manual Baretto. Mr Kutkar
further said that the Directorate of Panchayats had sanctioned
one plastic shredding machine for each taluka in the state to
wipe out plastic menace.

All plastic waste, collected by the panchayats in Canacona,
will be transported to the plastic shredder at Shristhal, where
the contractor, approved by the department, will dispose the
waste, after it is shredded, said Mr Kutkar.

He also said that the machine is designed to handle hard plastic
including bottles, cups, besides polythene bags. Once the waste
is transported to the shredding machine the plastic will be
shredded into fine bits after which the government approved
agency will use it for different purposes. He also said that the
waste can be used to generate fuel and other energy. The
shredded plastic can also be blended with bitumen and used
to surface roads.

Mr Kutkar further disclosed that the plastic can be recycled
after shredding. He said that each village panchayat can get
a sanction of Rs 25000 towards appointment of labourers
for collection of plastic bags and other garbage from places
within the panchayats jurisdiction.

He said that labourers and rag pickers would be paid Rs100
per day for ten days on daily wage basis. 'All the collected
waste will be handed over to the agency for disposal or
recycling,' Mr Khutkar added. The BDO also pointed out
that those panchayats that have compactors would get
Rs 5 that would be used to supply fuel to the compactor.

Besides, a gang of four labourers would be employed by the
panchayat for collection and disposal of plastic waste and
garbage at the dumping site. Mr Kutkar further said that once
this plastic shredder is installed, then no person should be
allowed to dump garbage in the open and the panchayat shall
take strict action against such offenders under the provision of
the Goa Non-Bio-Degradable Garbage Act 1996, and the
Goa Non- Bio-Degradable Garbage Control Rule 1997.

The village panchayat shall take immediate steps to make
available the required number of bins. These bins must be of
two different colours; Green bin for bio-degradable waste,
and black non bio-degradable waste.Hospitals, dispensaries,
private clinics etc, will have a red coloured bin for bio-medical
/clinical waste, Mr Kutkar added.

As far as possible all households, hotels, housing societies etc.
must be encouraged to have their own garbage disposal systems,
however, if any of them require the assistance of the panchayats,
for disposal of their garbage, such agencies should be registered
by the panchayats and immediately be provided with a set of
colored bins, added Mr Kutkar.

Dear Dr. Ferdinando,
Thanks for caring to express your intent. I now have a sense of what your
are talking about. Yes there are many organizations doing relevant work for
our other halves. But rather than publicity as it is seen today, the nature
of their work must be put out/explained -- certainly by word of mouth,
through temples and churches and mosques. All easier said than done of
course, but needed if as a society we continue to heal. This may sound a bit

About education, mine is all related to the arts. Frankly, in general quite
pathetic, but I made up for that in other ways. Also were it not for my two

[Goanet] Prajal Sakhardande, Aires Rodrigues assaulted, hospitalised.

2008-10-13 Thread Miguel Braganza
Dears,

First of all a short prayer for the quick recovery of my friend and fire-brand,
Prajal Sakhardande. Agni Pariksha is not for teachers. He is obviously a
collateral victim.

Adv. Aires Rodrigues is made of sterner stuff. May he recover the full use of
his injured finger.

At 18 minutes past midnight [0018 hours] on Tuesday 14 October, 2008, Digital
News flashed news that will send a shiver down every activist's spine. It read
thus:
SOCIAL ACTIVISTS AIRES RODRIGUES AND PRAJAL SAKHARDANDE MERCILESSLY BEATEN UP
BY A MASKED GANG LATE NIGHT IN A PANAJI HOTEL. ADMITTED IN HOSPITAL.

Lecturer in history at Dhempe College-Miramar and GHAG as well as UTTH GOENKARA
activist, Mr Prajal Sakhardande; UTTH GOENKARA spokesman and lawyer Adv. Mr
Aires Rodrigues, and another three persons were at a restaurant in Panaji-Goa
when a gang of seven to eight people attacked them with weapons.

Adv. Aires Rodrigues is the lawyer representing the German national who had
accused the son of a cabinet minister of sexually harrassing her minor
school-going daughter was apparently the target of the brutal assualt by a gang
at a city restaurant. The rest were collateral victims.

Adv Aires Rodrigues and Prajal Sakhardande have been admitted
to a city hospital. Mr Rodrigues was operated as one his fingers was badly
injured.
The hospital was host to a crowd of media and the top police officials when
the news of this brutal assault was received.

It may be recalled that yesterday at a press conference he
and the German lady accused one minister's son of wrong doing.
Even earlier Mr Rodrigues had pointed out to certain alleged illegalities in
the affidavit filed by the minister while filing his returns leading to his
being sent a notice by the retirning officer.

It may be recalled that this is the same minister who has been accused of
attacking the Panaji City police station on 18 February, 2008, and he was sworn
in as a minister while a CBI inquiry is on.

The minister is an obvious suspect in the assault on the activists that could
have been carried out by anyone to defame him in this politically volatile
period. He was the prime accused in the Regional Plan 2011 ...but the work of
development has continued unabashedly even while he resigned the post of TCP
minister on 06 January, 2007 almost two years ago. Almost every minister
has his fingers in the builder's pie and their pockets are filled with iron
ore! To top it all we have a Manohar v/s Manohar drama in the chai shop with
one Manohar charging at the Gram Sabhas like a dhirio bull in a China shop.

Dista toxem asso-na tem; dongor pois suttiant sazre, lagim suttiant kazre!

We need to see how the political drama unfolds.

Watch this space .. and protect your back, unless it is already against the
wall!

It is all about money, honey.

Dears,

Just saw the gory visuals on PRUDENT Media with its Editor, Sandesh
Prabhudesai, at his theatrical best ...as if he was anchoring a discussion on
global warming and the ice melting in far away Greenland. The only person who
looked cooler that him was Dr. Pravin Togadia on Goa 365 saying that the
Bajrang Dal and VHP had nothing to do with the violence against Christians in
Kandhamal-Orissa or in and around Mangalore in Karnataka since end August and
14 September, 2008, respectively. He laid the blame on Pakistan and SIMI.

The damage to Adv. Aires Rodrigues is very targeted from the looks of it. The
index fingers on both the arms have been sliced off at the first joint at the
stump end. The two finges have been completely severed and I do not know if
there is any surgeon in Goa who can restore mobility to these fingers, so
damaged.

Dr. Oscar Rebello was at hand outside CAMPAL CLINIC, Miramar, to brief Prudent
Media on the status of Adv. Aires and Prajal. They are clinically stable he
said, but the actual condition will be known after scanning. Oscar rightly
stated that no one expected the actions to reach such a low level as to
become physically violent. Like Oscar, many of us do not appreciate the style
of activism that Aires resorts to, but this is no way to respond to him. There
are legal and social options, which need to be exercised in a civilized society.

Prajal has a bleeding wound near his right ear. He seems to have been punched
and battered as his nostrils and lips showed congealed blood. He was conscious
and able to speak. One could hear him asking for his wife, Anju, after he
finished answering Sandesh's questions on camera.

The behaviour of the authorities at CAMPAL CLINIC left much to be desired in
terms of customer care. An injured Prajal bbeing interviewed is bad enough,
PRUDENT Media team was apparently allowed access to the Operation Theatre to
film an unconscous Adv. Aires awaiting the attention of a surgeon. I do hope
the nurses in the OT do not wear infection carriers like bangles as did the
para-medics attending to a bleeding Prajal in a casualty room.

Adv. Jatin Naik, who was with Adv. Aires and Prajal at Ashok Bar Restaurant
behind GPO, Panaji [between Rua de Ourem and San Tome road], not far from
HERALD office, was clearly distraught. Ashok is a favourite place for chicken
xacuti, but some one in the background while Jatin was being interviewed on
PRUDENT Media, was insistent on getting an aswer to his Question Is it a hotel
or a bar? Great sensitivity ...and journalistic skills, indeed!

According to Jatin, he had just moved away for a moment when all hell broke
loose at about 10.20 P.M. on Monday night at Ashok The men were wearing
burkha [possibly black hoods] and could not be identified. They carried
knives and assaulted the two [Prajal and Aires] with Aires clearly being
identified as the target. there were half a dozen of them, possibly seven,
according to Jatin.

Prajal was clearly dazed. He thought some of them carried something like a
machine gun. It seems unlikely, though not impossible.

SP North Goa, Bosco George, was unruffled by the incident. Neither were Dy.
S.P. Deu Banaulikar [holding charge in Vasco and Panaji, while a Police Medal
winner like Dy. S.P. Sammy Tavares is twiddling his toes without a posting,
according to HERALD's Tomcat] and Panaji P.I. Francis Corte were equally cool.
They know too well where the enthusiasm of SP Thakur[?], Dy. S.P. Mohan Naik
and P.I. Naik landed them after 18 February, 2008, hungama ...and the GRP is
not such an exciting posting. They will play it by the ear.

In the meanwhile, do not rush thinking that Babush is to blame as PRUDENT Media
editor seems to be imprudently doing. After the due course of law the blame
could fall on anyone ...even you! If an 80 year old lady and a not-so-young
priest of Don Bosco school in Sulcorna can be charged with criminal
intimidation of drivers of iron-ore laden trucks, who assaulted the
activists at Colomb-Sanguem on Saturday ... anything is possible.

WAIT AND WATCH.

PANAJI Mr Aires Rodrigues, a lawyer and social activist, and Mr
Prajal Sakhardande, a teacher of history in a city college, were
brutally assaulted by a group of 7-8 people at a city restaurant here
this evening.
Mr Rodrigues was admitted to a city hospital and was operated as one
of his fingers was badly injured.
Mr Rodrigues and Mr Sakhardande have been in the forefront in recent
years defending social causes, human rights and rule of law.
The attack comes in the wake of Mr Rodrigues role in espousing the
case of a minor German girl whose mother, Ms Fadela Fuchs had filed a
complaint with the Calangute police station alleging sexual assault on
her daughter by Rohit Monserrate, elder son of the Education Minister,
Mr Atanasio Monserrate.
Mr Rodrigues held a press conference at his home on Sunday along with
Ms Fuchs alleging police inaction on her complaint since it was filed
on October 2.
Mr Rodrigues was scheduled to address another press conference
tomorrow with Ms Fuchs.
Earlier in the day, some police officials with an NGO visited Ms
Fuchs house but the latter refused to make any statement to them
saying that she would make her statement at the press conference
tomorrow.

[Goanet] women fronts for fukot publicity!

2008-10-13 Thread Anthony M Barreto
To lose a daughter is tragic for a mother. The women groups would have done
well to get together to seek justice for the bereaved mother.
But they chose to harass her over a matter that is quite subjective though
debatable. That gave them international limelight and the Goa Police got an
alibi to give the mother a taste of Goa cop(s).
Women’s groups are generally fronts for fukot publicity.  There are women
issues crying for attention staring them in the face. But they are obviously
not interested in this ‘behind-the-curtain’ type of social work.
Perhaps the words of William Blake will ring a bell, “He who would do good to
another should do it in minute particulars, general good is the plea of the
scoundrels, hypocrites and flatterers.”
If one takes a look at their charter of activities they will be mostly some
competitions, planting saplings, felicitations or some cultural programmes etc.
And these are followed by as much publicity as possible in the local dailies.
I remember once when I was a sub some ladies walked into the NT office with a
photograph for publication and instructions on how and where it needs to be
carried. The photograph showed some over-fed women decked in jewellery and war
paint distributing chocolates to the children of Bal Bhavan on Children’s Day.
If the women’s groups have something to flaunt in terms of achievements let
them make it public. May be there are indeed some achievements that will make
us Goans proud.

Sarah Palin - that of the troopergate fiasco; check mate, Obama just

[Goanet] Kandhamal violence-is it communal?

2008-10-13 Thread Mario Goveia

From: Santosh Helekar [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Good to see another broader perspective on this problem being posted here.

Mario observes:

In my opinion, the only perspective that counts is that we are seeing once
again that anarchy lurks just below the surface in certain segments of Indian
society, ready to erupt into wholesale violence at the slightest provocation,
whether real or imagined.

For groups of citizens to take the law into their own hands is not a good sign
for a diverse democracy that is over 60 years old.

The good news is that most Hindus are tolerant, embrace freedom and democracy
and oppose the mob rule that we have seen recently. If they were not, India
would be as ethnically cleansed as Pakistan by now.

The bad news is that those who are supposed to protect innocent citizens are
often MIA, or show up too late.

 Thanks Miguel:
Its a pity that Prajal Sakhardande got caught in between. But it shows how
low things have descended. It could have been anyone -- even a Goanettter if
one was meeting with Adv. Aires Rodrigues at that time. I guess the same or
worse treatment would have been meted to a woman?

This could also be a setup to set up a minister who in any case is not
worthy of esteem.

Lets hope both Prajal and Aires, their families and loved ones deal and
recover from the various traumas they are going through. Lets also hope that
this is one more eyeopener to the rest of us that things are beyond sick.

Sincerely,
Venantius J Pinto

 Dears,
First of all a short prayer for the quick recovery of my friend and
fire-brand, Prajal Sakhardande. Agni Pariksha is not for teachers. He is
 obviously a collateral victim.

Adv. Aires Rodrigues is made of sterner stuff. May he recover the full use
 of his injured finger.

A corner of a foreign field in Goa
Dona Paula is known for many things... but there's something else in Dona
Paula, not too well known, but which brings to mind, Rupert Brooke's poem
The Soldier. The poem comes to mind in Goa, because there is in Dona Paula
a corner of a field, foreign to the British, that has a graveyard, where
nobody has been buried for over a century and is very simple and popularly
known as the British cemetery. It's there because for a brief while, during
the Napoleonic wars between 1799 and 1813, there was a British garrison of
about 10,000 soldiers stationed in Goa, defending the Portuguese enclave
from any possible French attack. [Alexandre Moniz Barbosa, TOI]

I had the oppotunity to visit this cemetry earlier this year. This plot is
good for a couple of slim high rise buildings. Our ministers should
seriously think of getting in on the action. More fukot. Chamchas please

Averthanus L. D'Souza,
Your post is a brave attempt to analyze the current crises.

However, the main question still is whether or not the markets can regulate
themselves.

If we now know the answer to that question, the first resolve has to be to
re-instate
the regulations that were in place. Re-instate the laws that worked for
eighty years
before the current US administration were lobbied to remove the laws.

Without the laws back in place, attempts by politicians to 'fix' the problem
will
only make matters worse.

There are lessons to be learnt from the present global financial meltdown.
The first lesson is that morality is an essential ingredient of any
 political, social
or economic system. Unrestricted greed cannot be the foundation of economic
 prosperity.

Morality has no place in the stock markets or the financial systems. You do not
qualify for a
loan because you have good morals. You get a loan/capital because you can
demonstrate
that your idea will be the best money maker. For low risks, you get low
rewards. For greed,
the reward should be bankruptcy. The current systems of Govt giving a helping
hand to
those who bankrupted the companies they were running, only serves to worsen the
economy.
The Russian economy collapsed because of this and the US economy is about to
follow.

Those who loudly proclaim that morality (and religion) should be kept out of
the Market place,
need to take a fresh look at their fundamental premises in the light of this
 present global financial meltdown.

Religion definitely has no place in the the stock markets. I think all the
prophets and religious
have made this abundantly clear. If you are in the markets, you are there for
only one reason:
to make money.

PS. Those fleeing to the 'safety' of US treasury bonds are the people who
are essentially sponsoring
the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The US govt does not have the ability to
finance these wars on its own.

Dear Goanetters,

Late last month the issue of Goanet moderation was raised and

It would appear that some of you who were highly critical of moderation

If it is the moderation you're concerned about you've made you point.
We've heard everything you had to say. Leave it at that. If you're

[Goanet] ATTENTION ALL ACTIVISTS

2008-10-13 Thread Dr . Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão

The criminal assault that took place in Panjim on Prajal Sakhardande and Aires
Rodrigues is not a surprise. What surprised me was Aires being an advocate and
a person who’s been outside India, should throw caution to the wind. Any
activist who’s fighting for any issue will have developed enemies, and it is
mandatory that he/she takes basic precautions for his personal safety. Below
are a few basic points that one should follow; the principle being in not
allowing your adversary to plan an assault.

Never follow any fixed routine. Like walks in the morning, frequenting a fixed
restaurant, etc.
Never follow the same route and timing to work and back. Delay or go early or
take a roundabout route.
Never be out late at nights when most people are already home. The chances of
less witness make an assault on you more feasible.
Never stay at a public place like bars or restaurants for more than half an
hour.
If you are travelling by car, always shut the windows and lock doors from
inside. Never stop if a stone is thrown at the windshield.
If you are attending a late function, arrange to stay somewhere else for the
night.
Avoid travelling on motor bikes.
Never tell anyone your whereabouts, except your family and trusted friends.
Use answering machine at your residence telephone, so you cannot know if you’re
home or not.
Never get out of your house at night, even if you hear a baby crying at your
front door. Call the police.
Never respond to an SMS. Call back and confirm.
If you’ve made a lot of enemies, never keep a fixed residence.
AND PLEASE KEEP YOUR EYES AND EARS OPEN ! BE ALERT !!

What can I say Wow, Wow, Wow, Laluram, finally managed to get you out into the
open, after all !!! Good of you to respond so we can have a heart to heart talk
which people should do and sort out differences.

First and foremost please prove that any one has in fact abused Hinduism on this
forum. Don't be cock eyed there is a difference when you call a goat a goat,
and a bigot a bigot. It is you who started posting venom on this forum against
Christians and Muslims and not visa versa.

Acts of violence will definitely be condemned and must be condemned, that does
not mean we are anti Hindus or against Hinduism. We have in no way been Hindu
bashers or cudgel against them. What we all speak about are the uncalled for
atrocities committed by the RSS and The Bagrangal. If you think RSS and
Bagrangdal are Hinduism, you are a lost cause to Hinduism and to the secular
fabric of this Country and it's amply clear what your are what your are not
Your support for violence, by stating that violence is natural instincts of
modern society, you definitely proved me right about the stone age era and you
surely don't belong to the 21st century social society. With your statement that
what happened in Orissa and Karnataka was right to self defense, you surely
misunderstood the meaning of self defence, attack is the best form of defense
would have sounded better.

I am in no way condoning the act's of violence of other groups, like I said I am
against any form of violence, if you have read my response to your earlier post
I have condemned forced conversions if there were any and also the killing of
the VHP leader. The guilty should be definitely be punished, that's the
difference between my thinking and yours. Don't you blame the desecration of
temples on Christians to justify the actions else where and for your kind
information Christians do not follow Marxist ideas and are not mercenaries like
the RSS and the Bagrangdal who only believe in violence, btw which Hindu monks
are you talking about ?

Your question about anti national activity of the VHP, RSS and Bagrangdal has a
very straight forward and a stare in the face answer. What is communal violence
called ? What is the spread of hatred and instigation of violence called ?
Aren't they as bad as bombings themselves. Do these actions, not affect the
integrity and unity of India, isn't that anti national ? And you have the
audacity to ask ?

It's plain and clear as water that the issue of forced conversions was a valiant
effort by the RSS and the Bagrangdal to justify their actions which are nothing
but pack of utter lies. Tell me one thing, the people, who were supposed to be
forcefully converted to Christianity, why did the RSS and Bagrangdal had to use
force to reconvert them the Hinduism, if they were forced into Christianity then
wouldn't they willfully reconvert themselves to Hindusim ? Food for thought
isn't it ?

It's your folly to compare the Christian Missionaries to the like of SIMI,
terrorism is terrorism, that's what I have been saying all along whether it's
Christians or Muslims or the Hindu right wing radicals, terrorism should not be
condoned but condemned by one and all. Why do you fail to accept the fact that
the good work that the Christian Missionaries have done and are still doing is
humanitarian. Do you actually know how many Hindus come out alive and educated
through the thousands of hospitals, schools, colleges and other institutions run
by these Missionaries and still follow Hinduism ? I am sure I will not be wrong
if I say, that all this Missionary work has benefited the Hindu's more than the
Christians, very simple reason, the vast population of the Hindus to the
miniscule Christians which in fact has lessened over the years for your kind
information, if there were forced conversions, it should have increased. From
your attitude I can safely say, that you are more embarrassed that the
Christian Missionaries are doing, lot more humanitarian work than your radical
groups. We have always lived in ambience with society and with respect for
culture and without abusing Hindu culture or concept of Hindu God.

Pastors Vinod Karsal and Sekhar Kashav, were they found guilty ? If guilty they
should have been punished. That's how I think !!! You again forget to accept the
fact that, apart from the Christian Missionaries, very little has been done for
the rural poor and the illiterate and you are absolutely right when you say food
is their religion, so do you think the Missionaries dangle food before them and
say, here, become Christian only then you can eat Is that what you want all
us to believe. Come of age man, if people show gratitude for the health,
education and other essential benefits received, so be it and if you or your
radical groups

Comment:
With the threat of being banned looming large over the VHP and BD, and the heat
coming close to the BJP with nowhere to hide, we should not be surprised to see
more of such theories and articles floating around. Operation whitewash is in
full swing. I will not be surprised if we are informed next that Pravin Togadia
was on a peace mission in Orissa 'dousing' fires. And as for the simultaneous
violence in Mangalore, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, MP and elsewhere we will soon be
told that it is mere figment of our imagination and that the VHP / BD were in
fact protecting the christians, and that it was the victims themselves who
inflicted the violence on themselves to attract sympathy.

And we will have posts applauding such 'broader perspectives'. No matter there
is no rationale or evidence to support such views or that facts point out to
the contrary. For those who wish to believe what they wish and those who wish to
live in denial, they will continue to do so. But all of us are not suckers to
fall for such stories!!!

As I read Rina's post, THIS IS a clash between the two religious groups.
Rina has not given us any other logical basis for the  clash.

I agree if Rina suggests that the two neighboring tribes / castes are clashing
over diminishing  resources - land, jobs, housing, govt largess.  And using
religion as a spice  (excuse). This may be the underlying problem all over
India, as suggested by the Catholic Church in India.

Now why should these uneducated people not be allowed to use religion as a
'spicy explanation' to understand and explain their problems?  After all do not
the 'intellectuals' in India and on Goanet use religion to blame many of
the ills of the past and the present?

Are not chauvinists and partisans on this forum also called Bigots?
Regards, GL

The receiving end of communal violence are innocent people of all faiths,
persuasions and perspectives. It is high time that all chauvinists and
partisans in this forum recognize this fact.

Yes, unfortunately, the receiving end just happen to be Christians and the
dishing end happen to be Hindus.

 Rina Mukherji

the Kandhamal arson is not, as it has been concocted, a clash between Hindu and
Christian
faithfuls at all. The truth is that it is a continuation of the clashes that had
started in early 1990s between the 'Kandha' tribe, which did not convert
to Christianity, and 'Pana' caste people, most of whom had converted. ...
Religion is the spice added to this mix.

[Goanet] Catholic violence in Goa (attack on Aires)

2008-10-13 Thread marlon menezes
I am very sad to hear about this attack on Aires. I guess such violence in Goa
is ok so long as it is initiated by Catholics. If I recall correctly, similar
violence was threatened on legitimate business entities during the Da Vinci
Code saga in Goa. To make matters worse, some of the same crowd on Goanet who
are now rightly crying afoul about the violence against Catholics, justified
the use of violence then. This group also tried to shut down Aires when he
tried to pursue the issue of a priest in Ribandar allegedly molesting a child.

Activist lawyer, historian brutally attacked in city
 restaurant

 Navhind Times NETWORK

PANAJI — Mr Aires Rodrigues, a lawyer and social
activist, and Mr Prajal Sakhardande, a teacher of history in
a city college, were brutally assaulted by a group of 7-8
people at a city restaurant here this evening.  Mr
Rodrigues was admitted to a city hospital and was operated
as one of his fingers was badly injured.  Mr Rodrigues and
Mr Sakhardande have been in the forefront in recent years
defending social causes, human rights and rule of law.  The
attack comes in the wake of Mr Rodrigues’ role in
espousing the case of a minor German girl whose mother, Ms
Fadela Fuchs had filed a complaint with the Calangute police
station alleging sexual assault on her daughter by Rohit
Monserrate, elder son of the Education Minister, Mr Atanasio
Monserrate.  Mr Rodrigues held a press conference at his
home on Sunday along with Ms Fuchs alleging police inaction
on her complaint since it was filed on October 2.  Mr
Rodrigues was scheduled to address another
press conference tomorrow with Ms Fuchs.  Earlier in the
day, some police officials with an NGO visited Ms Fuchs’
house but the latter refused to make any statement to them
saying that she would make her statement at the press
 conference tomorrow.

allow political goons of the Mining Terrorists

[Goanet] BOOK LAUNCH: The Saraswats

2008-10-13 Thread Goanet AE

Saraswats form an intellectual community: Shyam Benegal

PANAJI - The celebrated film-maker, Mr Shyam Benegal on Monday said that
Saraswats, the worshipers of the pen, formed an intellectual community which
was constantly in a state of diaspora.

Mr Benegal, who earlier released the book ?The Saraswats?, a compilation of
facts and documents on the community collected from various sources and
edited by the well-known Konkani writer, Chandrakant Keni, at a special city
function, said that he began to understand the community after reading a
related book by the Sanskrit scholar, Rahul Sankrityayan.

?I found out that Saraswats were spread around the country and the globe,
and their understanding was not restricted to Konkani language,? he added.

The book, released by the V M Salgaocar Foundation on the 24th death
anniversary of the leading Goan Industrialist, late V M Salgaocar, traces
the roots of various Saraswat sects in the community. Mr Keni and the
trustees of the Foundation, Mr Shivanand Salgaocar and Mr Dattaraj Salgaocar
were also present on the occasion.

Speaking further, Mr Benegal said that he belonged to the Chitrapur sect of
Saraswats, one of the smallest, poorest and ?powerless? sects, which had no
lands, and functioned as teachers or clerks.

The noted film-maker also fondly remembered his film ?Trikaal? shot in Goa,
and said that the movie tried to trace the Christian life during the
Portuguese era.

Mr Keni, in his speech lamented that the Saraswat community is weak and
dispersed, in spite of its intellectual strength, while Mr Dattaraj
Salgaocar, in his welcome address said that the book will help in reviewing
the roots and identity of the Saraswat community, even if the castes have no
great significance in the globalised world.

Mr Shivanand Salgaocar proposed the vote of thanks, while Mr Anil Pai
compered.(ENDS)

[Goanet] Goans faced with goondacracy

2008-10-13 Thread Bernado Colaco
Nehru's imposed democracy turned out to be in fact goondacracy. Goans have seen
umpteen goonda actions. Our kasthi writers now lie low but make vile comments
of issues before 61. Casmiro Monteiro is often referred to in comments.  Maybe
our Supercop hero Dr. Julio Ribeiro should come out of retirement to take
action.
