[Goanet] ''the massacre of the mushroom hunters. Mushrooms do kill!
Mushroom hunt claims 18 lives By Reuters At least 18 mushroom-lovers have been killed in accidents while hunting for their favourite fungi in the mountains and forests of northern Italy. Mountain rescuers say eager mushroom seekers are abandoning safety procedures as they don camouflage and hunt in darkness to protect coveted troves, La Repubblica newspaper reported on Sunday. There is too much carelessness. Too many people don't give a darn about the right rules and unfortunately this is the result, Gino Comelli, head of the Alpine rescue service in northwest Italy's Valle di Fassa, told the newspaper. Seventeen people have died in nine days - six in 48 hours alone - mostly from sliding off steep, damp slopes in the northern mountains, la Repubblica said in a story headlined the massacre of the mushroom hunters. Another person has been missing for more than a week, it said. Ansa news agency said a man who had been hunting mushrooms was found dead on Sunday in the Alpine region of Valtellina. A combination of August thunderstorms and hot weather has led to a bumper mushroom crop that has drawn the first hunters of what is expected to be a boom season. -- DEV BOREM KORUM Gabe Menezes. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Goa-launch of the well-received *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho on Aug 29, 2010 (Sunday) at 11 am at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. If you don't write I will only say that this remark of yours was like an attempt of firing bullets in air! Response: It's really a privilege to get a reaction from Mr. Barad. Well Mr.Barad, hopefully you will get all your answers in the writings of late Gynanpeet Ravindra bab and his gang which have been published in the Sunaprant in the last one year ( which would hopefully suffice instead of going into the archives) spitting venom against the Romi Konknni people. I hope you will not tell me to describe to you the Romi Konknni people now. If not sufficient then please view the government CD released by Manohar Parrikar which was supposed to be on the liberation struggle but ended where the heart really belongs. Probably you must be knowing that in Margao bullets are never fired in the air because the operations are conducted with old Portuguese rifles which can only fire in the backside. On 30 August 2010 05:19, Jim Fernandes Folks, If you haven't been following a separate thread, I wanted to bring to your attention, that I had openly challenged a fellow GoaNetter Mervyn Lobo ( Email ID: mervynal...@yahoo.ca ) to trace my IP from my most recent posting on GoaNet. The challenge was that if he could locate and post my IP on GoaNet by 12 noon Monday Aug 30th, I would donate $100 to GoaNet in his honor. If he failed to do so, he was asked to donate a mere $10 to GoaNet in my honor. This would be more than an interesting read for all of us. RESPONSE: What is possible is that one of these gentlemen will donate at least $10 to Goanet. What is not possible: Goanet will not be able to re-design its website with $10. Nor with $100 offered above. We need a little more than that. So anybody interested in making a contribution and supporting Goanet re-design its website, kindly visit www.goanet.org and click on the Make a Donation button on the right and make a financial donation to Goanet. Hi Augusto, You're lucky this time round, as it is not possible for me to enflame this into a full-fledged flame war :-) The Saligao Exchange, which got burnt due to a short-circuit (wish government officials could be more accountable here!), is still down, and I can only reply via hurried email from a cybercafe in Panjim. Hope there's no JoeGoaUk sitting next door to me somewhere here... But that is unlikely, as they check IDs very stringently in this cybercafe... (terror is a bonanza to keep track on the citizen too). When I get back, I'll convey your viewpoint to Riza. She should be surprised, to say the least. All this while, she was alternating between two points of view -- one, that I know who JoeGoaUk is, or two, that I *am* JoeGoaUk :-) FN PS: For the others, don't believe Augusto on this. At last count, he was accusing Arvind Tengse [http://in.search.yahoo.com/search?p=Arvind+TEngseei=UTF-8fr=chr-greentree_fftype=966134] of being JoeGoaUk! [Goanet] A Walk Through Goa's State Museum
Whenever I tell anyone I am from Goa, the common reaction is – Oh what a beautiful place, feni, beaches and what laid back people! And laid back we are. We don’t even know what we have next door, leave alone anywhere in the State for that matter. Well, that goes for most of us. The exception is my friend Fredrick Noronha, who as a journalist, I guess, sniffs out everything of interest and worth writing about. And so, with a desire to make my trip to Panaji worthwhile, I consulted him about the things I could do in the city besides shopping for cashew nuts and spices. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Goa has a State Museum. I wonder why most people don’t know about its existence, nor is it publicised in any of the tourist guides or even the Department of Tourism’s sad information booklet which one refers to for places of interest to visit in Goa. The museum is located in an obscure corner of Patto Plaza, Panaji, hidden behind some multi-storeyed office buildings. There is no signage on the road down Patto Bridge where you need to turn in from the main road or anywhere on the way to guide you to it. As I was informed that it is in the vicinity of the BSNL building, I headed straight for it, driving through broken and muddied lanes in the complex. It is actually right across the Ginger Hotel and could very well have an easy access from the side if a lane had been planned. When I asked someone why there was no signage, I was informed that every time they put up a sign the Municipal people removed it. Very typical of one government body running down the other? I was the only visitor that morning in an overstaffed building which is kept really clean compared to other government buildings. Enthusiastic guards at the entrance to every hall guided me from one room to the other. I was offered a guide book at the entrance. This is one place that has no entrance fee – so guys take the chance for some free entertainment! The museum is pretty well maintained and not over crowded with stuff as most museums tend to be. You can view the collection at leisure - stone sculptures, bronzes, paintings, manuscripts, numismatic collection, anthropological objects, clay models, furniture and other interesting objects. Set up in 1973 by the Department of Archives in Goa, an Archeology Museum unit was set up at St. Inez in 1977. The present building the museum complex at Patto was inaugurated by the President of India on 18th June 1996. The museum consists of twelve spacious, airy and well lit galleries on two levels with a wide staircase in the centre of the foyer – Sculptures, Christian Art, Galleries for private donations by prominent Goans, Religious expressions, Cultural Anthropology, Furniture, Goa’s Freedom struggle and some other interesting displays in the open areas. Let me take you through some of the objects of interest in photographs I took. http://www.kodakgallery.com/gallery/sharing/shareRedirectSwitchBoard.jsp?token=882261753310%3A438727387sourceId=533754321803cm_mmc=eMail-_-Share-_-Photos-_-Sharer Of particular interest are the Misericordia Chair, a beautiful piece, the Table of the Inquisition – and prints of images of the various torture methods used during the Inquisition. Did you know St. Dominic was the founder of the Inquisition? I can’t believe anyone with such evil thoughts can become a saint! There is a fantastic collection of Sati and Hero stones, the Press gallery has an interesting collection of early printing machines and presses and the lottery machines are very special. We should continue using those to prevent rigging J One area that comes alive in a museum largely dead is the Centre for Conservation Education. One walks into different cool rooms to the sound of birds chirping, rivers flowing and the wild life. It is a walk through Goa’s natural beauty, how it is being destroyed and what we need to do to preserve it. The relevant ministers of our government should definitely take this walk and feel guilty about the way our beautiful State is going. The Museum also has an Audio-Visual unit. The screening of historical and archeological documentaries is organized for school students by prior appointment WWF has a Discovery Room where students may come in and work on various projects. I was informed that schools have so far not showed any interest in bringing students to see the museum or take advantage of the facilities available including a Science Room complete with computors, etc. The museum aims at preserving the cultural heritage of Goa by acquiring objects of interest taking one through evolution of Goa to its present identity. The friendly museum staff willingly takes you around and tries to help you with any additional information you may need. They were so happy that I had spent a good two and a half hours there that they took me for a sneak preview of a new find – a stone carving found recently in the Anjuna area. The
[Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans.
Dear Gasper, Cajetan, Floriano Matanhy Thank you for your respective thoughts. Gasper I am glad that Cajetan made your day. I share your “I believe’ mantra as well as educating the public. What time span do you reckon this “mantra” can be achieved vis-à-vis the corruption prevalent particularly after 19 December 1961? Is Goa only full of Catholic, Muslim and Hindu Goan brothers and sisters to generalise “Maka kiteak podlam”. What about the new Goans after the invasion/liberation/separation whatever other nomenclature that is used. It has been exactly 48 years and 8 months for the education process. Are votes being able to be purchased either directly or indirectly for whatever social status? In the modern day politics how many educated people can see through and through the party lines and choose to stand as independent candidates or join a new party such as “Goa Suraj” who has some good philosophies and backbone. People belonging to the old party lines have allegiance to the party on a “blind fold basis” even though they know that their party is wrong on certain issue and this has been the case for centuries throughout the world. History of India reveals that India did not attempt to change the “I believe” mantra, so why this belief would be extended to Goa being part of India? What we need to eradicate is not only “ Maka kiteack podlam” but perhaps “Maka poishe zaem” – corruption – can we do something about corruption as I believe both these issues are interconnected. For the sake of new addressed added to this mini list, in addition to the exchange of e-mail below, I am attaching a copy of an e-mail received today from our Floriano Lobo (addressed to you and a copy endorsed to me) and an e-mail from Mr. Matanhy Saldanha dated 28 August 2010 for the benefit of all. I reiterate my statement in my appended e-mail of 28 August 2010 “Goans should run Goa, like East Timores, Falkland Island et al” If this happens (albeit Gasper says “as if Sonia Gandhi is not aware of what is going on”) – does Sonia Gandhi know how Goans feel and are capable of managing Goa and has any Goan delegation met with her in person? Her late husband late Rajiv Gandhi as I said before had a soft corner for Goa unlike his grand father Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is on record saying “Goa kha lokh ajeem hai” and somewhere he mentioned that Goans were known to be Cooks. The Keralites when they have to refer a Goan in their Malaylam language they refer Goans as ABC (Ayah, Butler and Cood) and this is a fact told to me by a Keralite when I worked in Q8 some two decades ago. I believe our Goans have excelled in Middle East, Goa and elsewhere. Goans in Middle East are the most vital people outside of Goa to contribute (and have always been contributing) and as Mr. Matanhy Saldanha says: “But unless the NR Goans get seriously committed, we cannot really move ahead on that front”. Here is a clear call from a great Goan who has done lots for the Goan common man i.e. Raponkars etc. We need to show the Delhi authorities that Goans are not those that are projected in bolly-wood films. Great letters have gone from our energetic and talented Arwin Mesquita, Matanhy Saldanha and other prominent Goans in Goa and other parts of the world. I believe a personal presentation to Sonia Gandhi would add benefit to the “I believe” Mantra which could be extended to Delhi as well. We have spent lot of time celebrating our culture (which is good), however, we need to step aside and get out of our comfort zone include our respected Freedom Fighters who role in “I believe” mantra is more important than many of us. It would be great to receive views from all. I am happy to learn and be corrected and I will respect all views without a scorn. The Power of a Paradigm change is vital in our generation. [Goanet] Attacks on Gram Sabhas and Goan villagers
Whether it's Carmona or Cansaulim, the attacks on the Gram Sabhas or other villages in Goa is just shocking as it's an attack on demcratic traditions. Everywhere the underlying connections between the politician-builder-Government Machinery nexus is evident to all. The voices of the villagers cannot be suppressed. Hiring goons and goondas to intimidateour villagers will not silence the people. This has to be condemned by all. The following article is yet another instance of the Goan villagers at the Gram Sabha being attacked. Uproar at Carmona Panchayat meet over Rahejas HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, AUG 31 The Carmona Panchayat witnessed uproar at the monthly meeting on Tuesday after Panch member Orlando Da Silva protested against the refusal by the sarpanch to discuss the panchayat decision to hold inspection of the Raheja property without placing the construction file before the panchayat body. Orlando later lodged a complaint with the Colva police alleging that he was abused and threatened by three persons during the meeting. Based on the complaint, the COlva police has registered a case against Francisco Fernandes, Denzie Ferrao and Joao Francisco D’Costa under section 353, 504 and 506 (2) of the IPC. On the other hand, Sarpanch Estaquio D’Costa lodged a complaint with the Orlim outpost against Orlando for causing disturbances and disruption of the meeting proceedings. In his complaint, Orlando alleged that the trio abused him with filthy language, adding that one of the accused even charged towards him, but was prevented by the police from assaulting him. He contended that the Sarpanch disallowed his request to raise the issue of serving him the inspection notice without placing the Raheja construction file before the body. Sarpanch Estaquio, however, stated that Orlando raised a point which was not listed on the agenda, adding that he was ready to discuss the issue, but only after transacting listed business. “But, the panch raised an uproar and disrupted the meeting. He even abused me personally”, the Sarpanch claimed. The Sarpanch denied that the three youngsters has abused or made charged towards Orlando during the meeting. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. [Goanet] Fwd: [Police accused of stifling anti-Mopa airport protests
* -- * *Police accused of stifling anti-Mopa airport protests * *HERALD CORRESPONDENT/**PERNEM, AUG 20* Farmers agitating against the proposed Mopa airport have severely criticised the Pernem police for attempting to stifle their protests. A leader of the Mopa Vimantal Pidit Shetkari Samitte (Mopa International Airport Affected Farmers Committee) has claimed that Pernem police acted on a false media report and sent notices to them, warning them against holding any protests on Independence Day. On August 14, the inspector of Pernem police station sent notices under Section 149 CrPC to leaders of the Mopa Vimantal Pidit Shetkari Samiti (Mopa International Airport Affected Farmers Committee) warning them of action if they went ahead with any protests on Independence Day. There is input information received that the members of Mopa Vimantal Pidit Shetkari Samitte will sit for dharna on August 15 during the celebration of independence day at KTC bus Stand Panaji and at Hutatma Smarak Patradevi in protest against acquisition of land for proposed Mopa Air port, stated the notice. You are the activist of the committee and there is reasonable apprehension that you will involved in law and order problem which may led's (sic) towards commission of serious cognizable offence. You are therefore being issued notice U/s 149 CrPC to desist from getting involved in cognizable offence and in the event if failure in your part deem fit action will be initiated against you, the notice stated. Copies of the letter were forwarded to to the Superintendent of Police (North) and the Mapusa SDPO. When contacted, Pernem Police PI Uttam Raut Dessai confirmed that the notice had been issued to three persons of the committee as per law and to maintain law and under Section 149 of IPC. “Since the committee leaders had given a call for an agitation on Independence Day, there was a possibility of disturbance of peace,” said PI Dessai. “It is a common procedure followed by the police department and on the basis of the call for the agitation, we issued a pre-notice to the committee leaders,” added PI Dessai. The Farmers Committee leaders have, however, criticised the police for acting on a false media report. “A false report was given to the local media and on the basis of this false information, police served the notice,” stated Sandeep Kambli of Shemechi-Advan, one of the committee leaders. In fact, we had not given any call for a protest on Independence Day. One of our leaders was in a hospital and police served him the notice at the Tuyem Hospital. Incidentally on August 15, nearly 30 affected farmers had assembled near the Barazann Temple at Shemeche-Advan to decide their future course of action. Some farmers had assembled near the Barazann temple and performed religious functions to seek divine help to save their land. However, one of the police personnel is trying to defame us and our committee,” alleged Kambli. He alleged that though the matter pertaining to the controversial acquisition of land for the proposed Mopa airport is before the court, the government has issued acquisition notices to the people. “Instead of helping us, the government and some political leaders are forcing the people to give up their land for the proposed international airport at Mopa,” alleged Kambli. It may be recalled that locals of Mopa are up in arms against the proposed Mopa airport, claiming that they would lose their homes, plantations and their livelihood. A group of affected farmers have formed the ‘Mopa Vimantal Pidit Shetkari Saghtana' under the leadership of Sandeep Kambli, Hanumant Aroskar and Digambar Tulaskar to fight for their cause. * http://www.oheraldo.in/news/Local%20News/Police-accused-of-stifling-anti-Mopa-airport-protests/40062.html *http://www.oheraldo.in/news/Local%20News/Police-accused-of-stifling-anti-Mopa-airport-protests/40062.html ** ** ** -- -- * http://greenpeace.in/safefood/change-brai-bill-stop-gm-food-india/thank-you/comment-page-8/#comment-14505 -- * -- Please post your comments on my Blog: http://goanidentity.blogspot.com/ Please also see below: 1. Re: [Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans
Friends, We can have it 2 ways. One – As Oscar suggested send the petition demanding Special Status (online will be more convenient) to Mrs Sonia Gandhi since she is The Chairman of UPA and President of Congress. And wait for the result within a set deadline of 2-3 months. The Demand must include the introduction and passage of the Bill in Parliament to grant Special Status to Goa within next 6 months. Besides, Mr Saldanha, we have our very own NRI Commissioner Mr Eduardo Faleiro who enjoys good rapport with Congress High Command and NRG's. Mr Eduardo Faleiro could take this forward with his congress men/women. He is indeed copy holder of this message. Most of the listed items by Mr Saldanha are local issues which our elected MLA has to work on and does not require Union Government intervention. Two – Give support to Goa-Su-Raj Party or any like minded people who are ready to fight election in 2012 to save Goa for Goans. We have seen the all parties ruling Goa but no one worked for Goa but for its individual interest. Many so-called Congress man/women have put self interest ahead of the party and Goa. If Goans had been so generous with all the LOOT-MAR parties for 49 years Goa-Su-Raj Party deserves at least one opportunity to prove its mantle. Lastly, charity begins at home! Shun the politician’s politics (not individuals) by boycotting them publicly. As individual, they are all nice in private but their public life and service to Goan cause is pathetic. [Goanet] NRIs get right to vote
NRIs get right to vote PTI NEW DELHI, AUG 31 Non-resident Indians (NRIs) will now have a right to vote in elections, with Parliament on Tuesday passing the relevant bill, even as government promised to bring in comprehensive electoral reforms legislation soon. Replying to a debate on the Representation of People (Amendment) Bill, 2010 to allow NRIs to exercise their franchise in Indian elections, Law Minister M Veerappa Moily said the government would hold a national consultation on comprehensive electoral reforms in two to three months. Rajya Sabha had passed the bill yesterday. “The Ministry is making all round efforts for comprehensive electoral reforms and we want to hold a national consultation on it in two to three months time,” Moily said, responding to the demand for complete electoral reforms from members. He said the Election Commission had in its report on electoral reforms made 22 recommendations of which six had already been implemented. The rest of the recommendations, he said, were currently being examined by a department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee and it would be taken up for implementation later. Moily said the House had no “dispute” over the need for providing voting rights to NRIs, but members had views on the modalities for allowing that right, which would be addressed separately. Describing the current amendment to the law as long-awaited, he said the current bill aimed to provide rights to those Indians, who had gone abroad for employment or education but have not obtained citizenship of the country they were residing now, to get registered in the electoral rolls and vote in elections to legislatures and Parliament. Noting that 25 million Indians living broad were not able to participate in elections to the country’s legislative bodies, he said 25 nations globally had accorded such a right to its citizens living away from home country and that this right would not be unique for India. Responding to members’ queries on the bill, Moily said internet voting was one option that the government would consider in the future once technical expertise and infrastructure was in place within the country, adding that such a facility was yet to be introduced in India. “Let us look forward to that day,” he said, supporting the suggestion made by members. He said NRIs would be allowed to register as voters in the constituency from where they had obtained their passports “to avoid multiplicity of registering in voters list.” The Minister supported the option of registering in any constituency for NRIs irrespective of their passport address, but that issue would be resolved after finding a way to avoid “multiplicity” of registration. On the coverage of the entire voting population under the Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC), he said that would have been the “ideal state” and that the government would make all efforts towards that. Earlier, participating in the debate, Uday Singh (BJP) said while the Election Commission had made comprehensive suggestions for electoral reforms, the government had chosen selectively those that suited them for implementation. He also appealed to the Minister not to link registration in voters list to the passport address and allow their names to be included in electoral rolls in any constituency. Singh wanted the Unique Identity Card to be used as voters identity and citizenship card. P T Thomas (Cong) wanted the Minister to clarify if NRIs would be allowed to contest polls. But the Minister had already clarified in the Rajya Sabha that it would not be permitted. T K S Elangovan (DMK) wanted to know if the election officials would have powers to delete names of NRIs from voters list if they changed their passport address and if punitive action would be taken against them if they did so arbitrarily. B Mahtab (BJD) said it would be impossible for the NRIs to spend lakhs of rupees to visit India only to vote in elections and suggested that some other mode of voting should be allowed for them. http://oheraldo.in/news/Main%20Page%20News/NRIs-get-right-to-vote/40470.html * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. Re: [Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans
Dear Floriano and Gasper I waited to see various responses to answer your one solitary question. My answer is that Sonia Gandhi is Congress women and the one who is talking to people will be contesting the elections pretty soon. In case Goa-Suraj or independent party is mushrooms than great. If not, our visit to Sonia may bear fruits. What is lost if we make a contact with Sonia – she has best of both worlds in her brains and the magic moments she shared with her husband late Rajiv and his soft corner for Goa and Remo and take a leverage of this and place before us the important issues that she can influence on her part. Floriano I did not mean to undermine your Goa-Suraj party instead I professed that people have a golden opportunity to give your party a chance. I do this with e-mails to my close friends and families in Goa propagating about your party. Feed back from Agnelo Pinheiro of date refers, as well as Joseph Rebello’s food for thought – Once upon a Time is attached. Please have a read. Matanhy Saldanha whose views I also appreciate felt that there was a merit to see Sonia Gandhi. I have deleted most of those e-mails addresses that came along with Matanhy Saldanha’s e-mail of 28 August and left a few whom I know. I appreciate your point that some of our Goans like to go light; however I thought all of us are passionate about Goa of our Dreams to retain with us. Thank you for your feed back. Re: [Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans
Dear Sirs /Madam, With reference to the Emails as below, I would like to summarise what We Goans really need to do in order not to be extinct like the Mauritian Dodo, God forbid.!. First, we should Re-Educate the Goans both in Goa and the Goans in the wider World into BELIEVING that we, really were Annexed and not the notion of to the Freedom Fighters that we were LIBERATED from the erstwhile Portuguese only to fall prey to the Rampant Greed of Rape of Virgin Land and Woman folk alike, Plunder of hillsides and Beast alike by our so called MLA's, but to put in mildly, none other than Money Laundering Agents at that. Every other Goa State Govt , elected after 1961 has been acting and governing as though there was no tomorrow, so why you may ask to hive of Goa. For a reality CHECK, is not in the Interests of a Govt, to BE for The People, By the People and With the Wishes of the People ? So why is it then, we have in our Goa, types of Govt MLA's who think it is expedient to BUY the People, Far of OFF the People and at Best, to Without the Consent of the Vast majority of Goans of the Soil People ? Over the 48 yeras or so, every Goa State Assembly Govt (MLA's) that has come into being, has been Running to Mummy like spoiled Brat-es whenever something relating to Goa needs to be SORTED/Tackled Is this not a sign that we cannot take Control of Our Own destiny and we have to seek mother's Aid or Comfort to sort out party or other squabbles? Are we Really up to the JOB of Governing Ourselves when we have to start RUNNING to Mummy every time we have a cold or a sneeze or oil slick ? It is not too late to reverse this Trend, To Rule Or not To be Ruled by Goans, but we have to START today and not Tomorrow, because we have already wasted too much of our Yesterday's.away for the land sharks and others of that ilk. Let US therefore, put our Hands on Amchem Goenkarponnachem Caliz and Re-Educate the so called emancipated Masses, who though enlightened after 48 years, still need to be Evangelised more by OUR LOVE for Goa into Believing in OURelves not merely, to place OUR Lives solely in the hands of the MLA's, who are but the instruments of the Money Laundering Agents, but themselves, this then, is the Downturn of Freedom ? But, we must Strive to Re-educate the educated not to fall prey to false gods who will go around dishing out dirty (black money) Rs 5000/- apiece to get elected and this is where the Educated should Act, not like the UN-Educated or gullible of past times of men/women, but be more of an uprightness kinda of people? All is not lost yet, what Goa needs is truly God fearing , upright and decent of a people to lead Amchem Goem to Greener Pastures(not so with all that mining) and this then, it's the only way we can Redeem ourselves in the HOPE of being born Again in our Goenkarponn Hearts in order to Guide our Own DESTINY, not just being Annexed and resting on out past Laurels for all to See us as just as another Tourist destination on th eWorld map for Sun, Sand, Sea and for many now, the flesh trade of SEX, drugs and immorality. HowSAD really, OUR forefather/mothers would now turn in their Graves to see GOA going, Not to the Dogs, YES, so many stray dogs now out-numbering Humans, but it's own Graveyard of Despair ! Be REAL and LETS ACT Now to Save, not only our FAINT Goan Souls but the Biggest Prize of all, AMCHEM GOA, VIVA GOA, VIVA!! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. [Goanet] Anjuna police outline security measures at temples, churches
HERALD CORRESPONDENT CALANGUTE, AUG 30 Anjuna Police led by Police Inspector Manjunath Dessai outlined preventive measures to be taken at the temples and churches in its jurisdiction covering areas like Nagoa-Arpora, Anjuna-Caisua and Siolim at the interactive meet at Anjuna. The meeting of the committee members of the temples and churches, which was convened by PI Dessai, guided and suggested the committee members to go for illumination of the structures to curb thefts at nights. PI Dessai also suggested installation of CCTVs, if viable, at the temples to avoid thefts. Other measures suggested by PI Dessai included security guards at the religious premises, emptying donation boxes on regular intervals and good and strong safes. He also suggested having a temple plan in place, particularly the entry and exit points, etc. Addressing committee members, PI Dessai informed that the person arrested in connection with thefts and burglary of temples had the entire map of religious structures in the State and have been visiting the places on regular intervals, perhaps to finalise their plans. “The Police department is not averse to paying any volunteer, who comes forward for doing the security guard duty on daily basis,” PI Dessai told the gathering and asked the villagers to maintain alertness during early hours of morning between 2.30 am and 3.30 am, as most of the thefts and robberies have taken place during this period. “Though we try our best to patrol religious places during that period, it becomes extremely difficult to be at every place,” said PI Dessai. Welcoming the initiative of Anjuna Police, one of the committee members suggested to the Police Inspector to have photos of the wanted persons in connection with thefts at temples, etc, displayed on the board outside the temple premises. Another committee member suggested that the government should take initiative for installation of CCTVs at the temple premises rather than paying a security guard on daily basis. Another suggestion put forward by the members included the begging menace at the temple premises. PI Dessai asked the committee members not to allow beggars at the temple premises. He also asked the committee members to have a note book in place outside the premises so that they can keep a check on patrolling at nights. Earlier, Anjuna Police personnel Keshav Naik welcomed the gathering, while PI Dessai thanked the villagers and committee members for their cooperation and assembling at the place despite a short notice. http://www.oheraldo.in/news/Local%20News/Anjuna-police-outline-security-measures-at-temples-churches/40420.html Moi-mogan, Domnic Fernandes Anjuna, Goa Mob: 9420979201 * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. She said that she was appalled at the things that were happening in Goa, including the fact that women were treated extremely badly, worse still by those who were in power in Goa. She made a reference to T.B. Cunha's polemic 'Denationalisation of Goans' which was to be the spur to the subsequent discussion. I praised Selma for her book, one which I had privately told her I would have been proud to have had my name on the cover. I felt it was one which conferred meaning to the lives of 'ordinary people' like my parents and grand parents and their ancestors. History is usually regarded as the deeds of kings and queens and emperors and other such 'great' people quoting from Bertold Brecht's poignant poem about history books, 'Questions of a Worker Who Reads': Who built Thebes of the 7 gates ? In the books you will read the names of kings. Did the kings haul up the lumps of rock ? ... Great Rome is full of triumphal arches. Who erected them ? Over whom did the Caesars triumph ? Had Byzantium, much praised in song, only palaces for its inhabitants ? ... The young Alexander conquered India. Was he alone ? Caesar defeated the Gauls. Did he not even have a cook with him ? ... in his introduction Every page a victory. Who cooked the feast for the victors ? Every 10 years a great man. Who paid the bill ? So many reports. So many questions. I suggested that although Selma has shied away from calling her book a work of history, and her publisher Frederick Noronha in his introduction rather unkindly said that it was not a history or a scholarly work, it was indeed a well researched history that means more to us than the nonsense that is doled out to students in schools with all those boring references to kings and queens and 'historical movements'. I suggested that 'Diaspora' was a history that gave meaning to the lives of Goan people. The significance of Selma's book lies in giving significance to the accounts of the trials and tribulations of Goans, more particularly the Goan Catholic community by giving a a context to the trials and tribulations they went through over the years. It helps document a fantastic transformation of a people who are genetically not much different from other Indians of the Konkan coast who the Goans fondly call ghantis. This change has not always for the better as the Goans today are a people who no longer have any innocence. I also suggested that Selma's mention of the political tract of T. B. Cunha's 'Denationalisation of Goans' was important. Sadly it has been used by Hindutva groups to figuratively beat up Christians in Goa. I stated that Cunha used the term 'denationalised' to refer to both Christians and Hindu elites; and at any rate the behaviour of even those elites was in all respects typically Indian. I said however that denationalisation was what emigration did do to masses of Goans, whether it was emigration to Portugal or emigration to the British colonies. Once the first generation of those emigrants had children, the progeny's connection with Goa and the Konkani language became gradually loosened. Nationality wise they became citizens of the countries that they had emigrated to, and began to behave in the 'in Rome as the Romans do' manner. And they have very little understanding of Indian norms and customs. They were and are in most respects 'denationalised' literally and figuratively. They may have some sentimental attachment to Goa because they know their parents or grandparents came from there, but second and third generation emigrants do not have much idea about what it means to be Indian. Radharao Gracias who then spoke was the toast of the occasion. He asserted in the forthright manner of a Saxtti politician, that Goan Christians were not 'denationalised'. Rather they were forced out of Goa because governments over the ages had neglected to take care of the interests of Christians. This he said was to be expected because rulers always look after their own first, and are little concerned with those of minorities. He suggested the reasons for labelling Christians as being 'denationalised' by various forces were frivolous. He pointed out that clothes, food and other customs were not issues that should be used to marginalise people. Radharao lamented the fact that Goans could not unite and cooperate with one another, unlike other ethnic Indians like the Keralites or the Gujaratis. He said that dual nationality might
[Goanet] Onam festival held in Bicholim
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM AUG 29: About 400 Malayalee families residing in Goa celebrated Onam festival for two days at Bordem Bicholim. Onam, the most popular festival in Kerala, is the day when the legendary Asura king Mahabali visits his subjects. Mahabali had turned his kingdom into a virtual paradise on earth and the ‘devas’ could not tolerate this and they sought the help of Lord Vishnu to eliminate Mahabali. Vamana approached Mahabali who was conducting a yajna and asked for three steps of land for which the king agreed readily. The dwarf sized Vamana grew into the skies and with one step covered the earth and with another step the heavens. With no place to keep the third step, Mahabali offered his head, which was pushed by Vamana into the netherworld. But before sending Mahabali to the netherworld, Lord Vishnu gave Bali the boon that he can visit his subjects once in a year. The day Mahabali visits his subjects is celebrated as Onam. In Bicholim the festival was organised by the Kalpak Cultural Association - Bicholim for two days on Auguest 28 and 29 at Mahamaya Temple hall Bordem -Bicholim. Karalites residing in Pernem, Bardez, Bicholim and Sattari taluka took part in the festival. On the first day several cultural programmes were held. The special attraction for the second day was the 'Panchavadyam' presented by the famous group of artists headed by Purushothaman from Kerala. Besides this 'onasadya' (Traditional vegetarian lunch) also served as a special attraction of the day. The organisers had invited a special cook from Kerala for preparing 'onasadya' which had in all 21 items. The speaker of Goa Assembly, Pratapsingh Rane and the local MLA, Rajesh Patnekar also enjoyed the lunch on this occassion. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. Re: [Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans
Dear Mr Rebello I am a bit puzzled by the e-mails you sent me, linked to this call for Goans to rule Goa. Who has been rulling Goa for the past 48 years? Aren't all our politicians, MPs, MLAs and the lot all pure local goans? Do you really believe Sonia Gandhi and the centre are that concerned and have nothing else to do but spend time trying to manipulated the everyday governance or rather the lack of it, in Goa? I don't think so. The destruction of Goa, the disastrous policies , bad administration and corruption are all done by goans. We goans are the only ones to be blamed for the state of affairs in Goa. We are the ones who sell the land to developers, we are the ones who don't cultivate our agricultural lands, we are the ones who are so greedy that are trying to build horrific concrete jungles in every little corner of agricultural land and rice field, we are the ones who sell more and more land to the miners so that they can continue to expand and ruin our land, environment, water resources , pollute the rivers and so on, and finally we the goans are the ones who vote for the same gang of politicians, incompetent and corrupt as they are, over and over and over again. In fact the only time there was some semblance of discipline and good governance was around 1999 I think for a few months when Goa was under President's rule (control of Central Govt.). That was the only time when Goa had a General in charge, and that General Raphael Jacob actually saved what ever is left of nature in Goa in the Western Ghats and national parks and so on, and there was no corruption as no one dared to even dream of corruption under the General's rule. If it wasn't for him, we would just have a desert instead of forests and rich biodiversity in the National Parks. There would not be any national parks, to start with. The miners are still furious with him to this day! I agree that our electorate needs to be educated much before elections and it should not be difficult, as Goa is so small and only has about 350 villages out of which many are no longer populated. If dedicated goans really wanted to do something about it yes, that is one crucial thing to do but we need to be very clear about what do we mean by educating the electorate. The second one is to have some decent and educated and dedicated people to stand for elections, people with some principles, ideology and clear policies and people who are articulate and with some knowledge. Otherwise, what is the point of educating the electorate? Also it is not very difficult to start some anti-corruption campaign in Goa. We can start in a small way and grow into a movement. All we need to start with is to have some Tshirts printed with anti-corruption slogans and than get people to wear those T shirts on a certain day and start the ball rolling. That will show the popular feeling about the corruption in Goa. I personally think that what we need in Goa is President's rule again to clean up the mess and corruption, and bring some discipline, law and order to Goa, so that we have the time to educate the masses and search and prepare some decent politicians to fight future elections and have a moratorium on all constructions and new mining activity until some proper studies are done on the environmental and other impacts of those activities and give some incentives to people to start taking an interest in agriculture again. And also, I hear many let's act now from many goans, but what does that mean in concrete terms - act how? act where? what is the concrete action plan to save Goa? With best wishes Carmen Miranda On Tue, Aug 31, 2010 at 12:33 PM, Joseph Rebello wrote: Dear Sirs /Madam, With reference to the Emails as below, I would like to summarise what We Goans really need to do in order not to be extinct like the Mauritian Dodo, God forbid.!. [Goanet] Ponda Ranking Badminton: Shock win for Sunny/ Sharmad as Sharmad bags double
Sunny Sawant and Sharmad Mahajan scored upsets over upsets to clinch their maiden Mens Doubles Title at the All Goa Major Ranking Badminton Tournament organized by Ponda Shuttlers at the Indoor Stadium, Ponda on Sunday. The Championship was virtually a fairy tale story for the two talented youngsters. The duo, who had earlier knocked out the top seeds Floyd Araujo and Navneet Nasnodkar in the semis, were on song once again in the Finals as they sent the second seeds Parag Chauhan and Darwin Barretto packing with a 21-19, 21-14 victory. For Sharmad, it was a sweet double as he stamped his superiority in the Under 19 Boys singles event by registering a commanding 21-14, 21-13 win over Pratith Naik. Top seed Anura Prabhudesai was all business as she made light work of her opponent Emilia Silveira to win the Under 13 Girls singles title with a 21-12, 21-8 win. Dhruv Angle too scored a comfortable 21-12, 21-14 win over Tejan Fallary to claim the Boys Under 13 crown. In the Under 16 Boys event, Rahul Chandrashekar won his third title in a row this year, beating Chinmay Kamat in a tight contest. Rahul, who has been in great form this season, lost the first set 11-21 but rallied well to win the next two by a 21-16, 21-5 score line. Floyd Araujo prevented another major upset as he overcame a tenacious Ankush Patil to win 21-10, 18-21, 21-6 in three sets. Anushka Kuvelkar, Goa’s top ranked Ladies player, faced no such problems as she carved out a 21-15, 21-14 win over Anura Prabhudesai to clinch the Ladies Singles crown. In the Veterans 45 plus singles event, Rupchandra Humrasker continued with his winning ways as he beat Tanaji Sawant. Although Rupchandra survived a scare when he lost the first set 17-21, his superior stamina saw him through as he eased his way to win the next two sets 21-15, 21-11. The match of the day was the Veterans 45 plus Doubles event. Tanaji Sawant and P.K. Gupta, the top seeds, were on the brink of elimination against their opponents R Borkar and Santosh Prabhudesai. With the scores tied at one set all, the match looked all in the grasp of the second seeds who had gained a healthy five points lead in the decider but the top seeded veteran warhorses dug deep into their reserves to register an exciting 21-13, 19-21, 21-19 win over their second seeded opponents. Chief Guest Mr. Narahar Thakur(Secretary, Goa Badminton Association) distributed the prizes along with Club President Anil Paigankar, Club Treasurer Mr. Sandeep Khandeparkar, SAG Coaches Roy Athaide and Vinayak Kamat, Mr. Shashant Naik and others. The Tournament was supported by the Sports Authority of Goa and the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs. Carmen, You are spot on You have hit the nail on many heads If only some sense could be drilled into the thick skulls of the money grabbing electorate at the same time it would work wonders!!! The power of education , or the power of T-Shirts or the Power of Money...Which one will prevail is the question! At the moment Goa is so riddled with corruption from Top to Bottom from Legislators to Law enforcers to the Judiciary and the electorate and the Civil Service that ultimately MONEY still talks. The reworked double http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=double%20taxation%20agree ment taxation agreement ( DTA http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=DTA ), signed by India http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/India and Switzerland on Monday, will mean Indian authorities can seek information about account-holders in Swiss banks from January 2011 as long as they have a case, but the agreement won't facilitate a fishing expedition, Swiss foreign minister Micheline Calmy-Rey said. In an exclusive interaction with TOI, Calmy-Rey said starting January 1, 2011, Swiss authorities will provide information to India on cases of tax fraud and tax evasion. Ever since reports emerged of Indians having accounts in tax havens like Liechtenstein http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Liechtenstein and the success of governments like the US http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=US in accessing these accounts, New http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/New-Delhi Delhi has been working to get better terms from the Swiss. A new deal between India and Switzerland may be major step forward in the fight against tax fraud. Under the revised pact, we will give information to India not just in cases of tax fraud but also in tax evasion cases. We are also making a major concession for India in that we will start this process retroactively from January 1, 2011, as soon as ratification of the revised agreement has taken place in the course of 2011, Swiss foreign minister Micheline Calmy-Rey said. She also pegged the total amount of money in Swiss banks at 2,100 billion francs, or $2,050 billion, half of which were institutional funds. We don't have individual or a country-wise break-up of the money with Swiss banks but we do know that the total amount in the country's banks is around 2,100 billion francs. And half of this amount belongs to institutional clients, Calmy-Rey said in reply to a query that close on to $1.4 trillion in Indian black money was parked in Swiss banks. If half of the $2,050 billion is institutional money, the Swiss foreign minister said, the unaccounted-for money stashed abroad would be a little over $1,025 billion. Even if Indians account for 50% of this figure, their share would come to only $500 billion. [Goanet] Crabs, lobsters a malyalee fish monger
So for the week gone by, a migrant malyalee fish monger was fascinated with goan crabs. The migrant malyalee fish monger who like Vasco da gama strayed into goan waters some years ago, has for long been exploiting the turbulence of the waters by specialisng in marketing scorpions (vinchu) as lobsters. One of the reasonably realistic lobster domesticated by the malyalees and Delhi-ites in Goa, has classified common agitating goans as extremist environmentalists. The lobster that got displayed on the dais at Azad Maidan on 18th December 2006 before a massive crowd of goans (benevolently drawn to Panjim by church bodies), it perhaps had never seen at goan weddings, now believes it is a mermaid that drew the crowds with its dance. It also seems to have mastered the art of turbo-political engineering at the malyalee fish market. The malyalee fish monger and madgaon salvage crew seem terribly dejected that goans are now beginning to distinguish a scorpion from a lobster and vultures from peacocks. To their misfortune the lobster remains a lobster and fails to convince the goan crabs that it is a mermaid. Jai ho, the malyalee has for long earned his livelihood by duping unsuspecting goans. Centipedes get sold as tiger prawns and venomous snakes as earthworms to goans. And the latest addition in the malyalee market, is a butterfly soap manufacturer that descended into Goa from Calcutta. Reports reveal that this butterfly slipped on a moira banana skin and dislocated its spine. This accident is the cause of its amnaesia and blindness. In the process it's not able to distinguish scorpions from lobsters. That is why goans get mistaken for crabs. Except that all this is not accidental this time. It is part of the soap opera scripted by butterflies for elitist scorpions which is due to be released any moment before the next assembly elections in 2012. These stray migrants forget that goans are fish eaters and can well distinguish tiger prawns from centipedes, scorpions from lobsters and snakes from earthworms. The common konkani adage, SMP' is apt for the malyalee and his assembly of cross-bred lobsters and butterflies. -Soter * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. Re: [Goanet] My $100 Challenge
This discussion is no go. What good is someones IP? With most using a web mail account (yahoo, gmail etc) it would take a c*urt order to get the identity of a user. That is counter-purpose of a community network. After having been part of the Goa-net since 1995, I would for one keep away from most Goans on the GoaNet: some of them show signs of m*ntal illness (in turn abusive). There are others who cannot manage one original post but want to know others identity. To this I say, if someone is contributing to a discussion and has a valid point (and not abusive, who cares about his or her identity?). And don't quote GoaNet rules- its a community driven initiative, you don't own it! Take a look at this flickr picture posted by a GoaNetter (?). Is this what GoaNet and getting someones identify about? Really? This is low. http://www.flickr.com/photos/45002...@n00/941985141/ sco D bos...@canada.com wrote: On 30 August 2010 05:19, Jim Fernandes Folks, If you haven't been following a separate thread, I wanted to bring to your attention, that I had openly challenged a fellow GoaNetter Mervyn Lobo ( Email ID: mervynal...@yahoo.ca ) to trace my IP from my most recent posting on GoaNet. The challenge was that if he could locate and post my IP on GoaNet by 12 noon Monday Aug 30th, I would donate $100 to GoaNet in his honor. If he failed to do so, he was asked to donate a mere $10 to GoaNet in my honor. From: Gabe Menezes Sent: August-30-10 6:24 PM QUESTION: Why doesn't our own Bosco, I.T. guru, throw in his knowledge and inform us exactly what is possible and what isn't? This would be more than an interesting read for all of us. RESPONSE: What is possible is that one of these gentlemen will donate at least $10 to Goanet. What is not possible: Goanet will not be able to re-design its website with $10. Nor with $100 offered above. We need a little more than that. So anybody interested in making a contribution and supporting Goanet re-design its website, kindly visit www.goanet.org and click on the Make a Donation button on the right and make a financial donation to Goanet. Re the topic of discussion above, I recommend not talking fast and clumsily unless the topic is one's field of expertise. If one ignore's this recommendation, one is likely uninformed and entering a minefield at your own risk. - B * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. Re: [Goanet] My $100 Challenge
Jim Fernandes wrote: My apologies ... It looks like the challenge actually never left my mail box ... but I am reproducing it here anyway. You get 24 hours from the time this email is released by GoaNet in the distribution list to trace my IP and publish it on GoaNet. Jim F, There is a sign in my study that has the following quote of Henry Thoreau: It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see. What I see here is that you are hell bent on trying to disguise the info that gets embedded into your email. This is not a new phenomenon on Goanet. Many false ID's have been identified and exposed here. I have no interest in either your bet or in playing your little games. However, since Goanet does need the funds and since someone has already sent me the info, here is what your post reveals. The IP address of your latest post is 74-101-150-10 Your Internet Service Provider is Verizon Internet Services The location of your ISP is as follows: Country: United States State/Region: New York City: White Plains Latitude: 41.03 Longitude: -73.7733 Telephone Code: 914-XXX-XXX If you use the above coordinates on GoogleEarth, you will be able to see the building in White Plains. There is other info available too but I will end here for now. Since you believe in the honour system, you can send the cheque to Goanet. If $100 is too much for a one time payment, monthly payments of $8.34 would cover your honour within a year. [Goanet] Bad news for Portuguese passport holders
Bad news for Portuguese passport holders HERALD REPORTER MARGAO, AUG 30 Are you a Portuguese passport holder, but your name continues to be enrolled on the electoral rolls, hold on. You now run the risk of losing your voting right or losing membership of any elected body, if any, as the Foreigners Branch has submitted a detailed list of Goan Portuguese passport holders for action under the laws in force. In fact, around 1000-odd Goans, who have obtained Portuguese passports during the last three years face the risk of deletion of their names from the electoral rolls. Based on the report from the Superintendent of Police, Foreigners Branch, Tony Fernandes, the office of the Chief Electoral Office has forwarded copies of the list to the Assistant Electoral Officers across Goa for verification and action. Records revealed that around 312 Goans had obtained Portuguese Passport in the year 2008. The number swelled to 432 in the following year and around 433 locals acquired the passport so far this year. A perusal of the names revealed that most of the Portuguese passport holders hail from Tiswadi taluka, comprising the villages of Agassaim, Goa Velha, Merces, Santa Cruz, Taleigao etc. Though the Portuguese Passport holders hail from across the State, including villages of pre-dominantly Catholic Salcete, an overwhelming majority of the holders are from Tiswadi. “We are in receipt of the names of Goans from the Foreigners Branch who have obtained Portuguese passports. The names will be verified before initiating action under the Electors Rules”, informed Assistant Electoral Officer, Margao Paresh Faldessai. The AEO said that the Booth Level Officers (BLO’s) will be entrusted with the task of verifying each and every name of the passport holder before they are struck down from the electoral rolls. In fact, the election branch of the AEO, Margao has started the process of verification of the names based on records submitted by the Foreigners branch. http://oheraldo.in/news/Main%20Page%20News/Bad-news-for-Portuguese-passport-holders/40435.html * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. Re: [Goanet] Goa to be ruled by Goans.
The slogan Goa to be ruled by Goans' may sound very attractive and exciting. It is a perfect subject for mental masturbation. Besides this, it offers excellent campaign material for aspiring politicians to entice the voters during election. We had the Goa Election 2007 fought on the 'Save Goa' slogan. Now for the next Assembly election it could be 'Rule Goa' as the slogan. And you may suddenly have a Rule Goa Party which will be merged back into Congress after the assembly polls. Forget that the miseries of goans have not diminished a bit from 2007 till 2010. The Regional Plan 2021 will be out any moment. The last time it was Babush who was the culprit for a monstrous plan. Who will it be this time? Will we have the guts to hold the architects and engineers of Save Goa fame who have been responsible for crafting this new plan. Do you exopect it to be any different with the likes of Dattas and Deans on the panel. Shortly, we will all humbly submit before the government to yet another entertainment. The celebration of our Golden Jubilee of liberation. We will have some jokers from margao who will come to town with their circus. You will be told how as goans you have not assimilated yourself into the Indian mainstream. There will be programs to help you goans to inculcate a spirit of nationalism. All this will be swallowed without a whimper of protest. As long as goans cannot think beyond Sonia Gandhi, Manohar Parrikar and Oscar Rebello, the day they will rule their own land will never come. Like the Israelites in captivity it will be the Gawade or Ramani or Gupta or Parekh that will rule. Self-rule is not about wearing a T-shirt and TV appearances. It is about sacrifice, deprivation of self, spirituality, pain, ... How many goans are ready to give up their comforts for this? If there are, it is worth talking otherwise it will be only adding to item numbers in the movie. -Soter * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho. I wonder if he/she is reasonably informed. Holders of Foreign Citizenship (Passport) automatically lose Indian nationality. Such individuals may apply for Overseas Indian status but have NO right to vote. So, I ask: (a) How could they 'risk of losing their voting right' IF they have automatically lost it upon gaining a foreign nationality (b) Why should it be bad news for them (c) BTW: Any good news has come from voting in Goa? jc * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now available in Toronto, a few copies of *Into The Diaspora Wilderness* by Selma Carvalho.
