Re: [H] Happy Next Year ! ? Eudora

2016-12-27 Thread Michael Resnick

I had a similar problem with Eudora (yes, I'm still using it too).
After doing some googling I found that the following solution worked for me.

You need to tell Eudora to add the new certificate to the list of
trusted certificates.
In the personalities window, right-click on the personality and
select "properties" Go to the "incoming mail" tab.

Click on the "last SSL info" button at the bottom.
Click on the "certificate manager" button.
The certificate in question should come up selected.
If there is a + button next to it, click on that.
Repeat if necessary until you get to the bottom level.
Select that certificate then click on the button to add it to the
trusted certificates.

That should solve the problem.

Good luck!
Mike

I know Eudora is OLD. If it worked I would probably be still using

I wonder what the permissions were that prevented you from shrinking

Was it just that it was marked as a system partition?

So, I tried calling Microsoft. I first called the number on my

8 at a retail store!! You know the lame support staf that tells
people they have to reinstall or restore a backup to fix a simple
problem. Well MS has taken this to a new level... they tell you that
you have to buy a new copy of the OS because your key only works

Am I screwed.. am I really going to have to buy a whole new copy of

After I upgraded to win 8.1 from win 8 something went wrong and my
activation is no longer working .. which makes no sense so I have to contact

Re: [H] new system build ideas

I'll take a stab at getting you started.

Before I say anything I need to know if your current setup is
shortchanging you or not - if it is, you need to provide more detail.
However, if as you say, you've come into some extra money, don't care
about paying your bills, the hell with funding retirement, and if the
kids need a college fund then let them make meth - if that's the
case, then I say go for it.

Here are some generalized recommendations:

CPU's - Intel seems to have the edge when it comes to heat
dissipation (watts) vs. processing power - less is better.

If you are running VM's then an I5 should be fine.
If you have the money then it should be noted that the i7 offers some
improved virtulization features.
CPU is less important for gaming - GPU is the key factor. Decide
what's most important to you.

In order to compare CPU processing power go to http://www.cpubenchmark.net/,

HSF - If you don't plan to overclock then the stock HSF is probably OK,
For moderate OC look at the Cooler Master Hyper 212+ or the Cooler
Master Hyper 212 EVO - both are excellent, Relatively quiet , Pretty
good air flow and cooling, price is not bad.

If you going to really try and boost the OC then consider liquid cooling.
If you're trying to set a record, try liquid nitrogen or even liquid
helium (haha) - let me know how it works out - LOL,

Right now I'm running a CM Hyper 212+ on an i7 cpu with a moderate OC.

Motherboards - I've been using ASUS MBs for quite a while without
any problems.

I've been hearing good things about Gigabyte too.
As for specific models, figure out what you want/need (e.g.,
USB2/USB3 - how many ports each; eSATA - yes/no/how many; overclock -
yes/no/how much, etc.).

Go to NewEgg and use their selection/comparison tools.
Right now I'm running an ASUS Z87-A with no issues.
As I've said, I tend to favor ASUS big time.

PSU - look at Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling, Cosair (higher end),
and Antec (higher end),
I favor a single 12+ volt rail, active PFC, and 80+ certification of
Bronze or better,

Jonney Guru (http://www.jonnyguru.com/) is a pretty good PSU review site.
For most builds a 600w-650w PSU should be sufficient even if your
running an Intel i7 overclocked and have multiple HDD and are running
a single GPU.
If you're running a top of the line GTX Titan, or GTX690 (goes for
about $1000 and is currently OOS at NewEgg), the HD 7990 or decide to
run multiple GPU's (SLI or Crossfire) then you will have to bump your
power requirements.
Right now I'm running a PC Power and Cooling Silencer Mk III Series
600W Modular Power Supply.

Case - What's most important to you - form or function?
What size - full tower/mini tower/SFF/other, what front ports to you
want, how many fans do you want, how many internal HDD mounts
3.5"/5.25", how many external HDD mounts, etc.
Right now I'm running a Fractal Design Define R4 Black Pearl w/ USB
3.0 ATX Mid Tower Silent PC Computer Case.
It's nice and quiet with the option of adding many more fans for
cooling if necessary.

Memory - Look for 1.5v (or less) memory sticks, CAS Latency of 9 (or
less), dual channel sticks and memory speeds of DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800),
The lower the latency, the faster the memory (although in practice
there will probably be no discernable difference).
Memory speeds faster than DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) will probably provide
no noticeable improvement.
If you are running a lot of VMs you might want to bump your memory
from 16GB to 32GB.

If you are satisfied with the 16GB you have now then leave well enough alone.
Memory voltage less then 1.5v, CAS latency less than 9 and memory
speeds greater then DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) will all increase the price
and unless you are into extreme overclocking will provide no apparent benefit.

Memory brands I favor are Crucial, Cosair, and G.Skill.
I'm running G.Skill DDR3-1600 in one machine and Crucial Ballistix
16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) on my new machine, No memory
problems on either.

GPU - I don't do any gaming so I'll just offer that for most games,
the GPU is more important than the CPU.
To compare different GPUs take a look at
http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php
I'm not a gamer, so right now I'm just running the i7's integrated
HD4000 graphics processor.

HDD - I tend to favor WD Black 7200rpm 2TB models.
If fast access isn't critical then perhaps the WD Red models.
Right now I'm running a mix of WD and Hitachi 2TB 7200 rpm models

SSD - I would go for the Samsung 840EVO or 840PRO models at either
128GB or 250GB-256GB depending on your needs.

Backup - last but not least review your backup requirements.
Do you want/need a NAS or will external HDDs meet your needs.
I was running eSata for backup - multiple WD Black 2TB units, but
recently added multiple 4TB USB3 Hitachi units.

Will probably start looking at NAS solutions in the near future.

I hope this is enough to get you started.
I'll leave it to others to correct or expand on what I've s

Agree with the silicone sealer.
Premium silicone caulk is rated to last 20+ years, is waterproof,
non-conductive, will not significantly shrink or dry out, and will
expand/contract with temperature changes.
I don't think you even need to bother with a metal can since an empty
milk carton should also work as a temporary container.

If there is any concern about rodents, vermin, bugs, etc. eating
through the silicone seal then place the entire silicone-sealed
coupler assembly in a PVC pipe and seal that with silicone caulk too.

Take a Crisco #10 can and stuff the connections into it. Then, fill
the can with Silicone putty/sealant/spooge/whatever. Once it cures,
even if/when the can rusts, the stuff 'contained' should remain

Interesting idea, but I'd confirm that the Crisco is really
non-conductive. Being essentially a fat, it would also decompose over time.

You could also consider trying a closed-cell expanding foam (ie:
Great Stuff) or silicone...

Ok, have a location where a 1000' splice of ethernet runs and makes a turn.
Due to a really poorly cut conduit by the client, this has never
been right since

the beginning. So, wire people out, we're trying to think of a unique
solution. We had a wild brainstorm today.

Here's the deal. At 600', a box in the ground (about 2' down) joins. Cable
comes in both ways. Joins there (just couplers basically). But
the box fills

with water every single night all the way.

The wire installer tried a weathertight box (still leaked in once submerged,
more designed to resist rain) and they've tried wrapping with
electrical tape,

etc.. in the end, same thing happens, short across live wires and down she
goes.

So, a guy at the meeting, the sprinkler systems person proposed something I
thought was ridiculous but I've thought about since all day. Get a can of
Crisco, wrap the wires, and run them down into the crisco can, seal the top,
let go. Crisco would hold out the water and it's
non-conductive. This is after

they suggested peanutbutter.

We all laughed like crazy when these were suggested. Now I'm wondering
how dumb of an idea this would actually be... worst case, you're
just out the

$5 to try...

If so, have you specified a default profile.
If not the system will appear to hang for the default timeout amount

Re: [H] Small problem w/pdf files?

Before you reset the "Read Only" attribute of all your PDF files,
just reset one of them on your NAS and then see what happens.
If that works you can then use the attrib cmd to change all your PDF

Since the original is "Read Only" the copies on the NAS might also be

Re: [H] Acer P244W 24" Monitor - Looking for WinXP .inf Driver

David,

Thanks for the link.
I've already tried it but couldn't get windows to recognize the monitor.

GOOD NEWS!
I downloaded another driver file from some driver web site (don't
remember which one - I've been all over the place).
Inside a .cab file, which was inside another .cab file I found a .inf
and .icm file.

Windows took these and now recognizes the P244W as an analog monitor.
The gap on the right side has shrunk from about 1 inch to 1/4" - 3/8".
Not good, but certainly better than before.
The .icm file has provided a color pallet from Acer, but I've chosen
to stay with the sRGB Color Profile for compatibility with my photo
editing software.

If anyone has any interest in the .inf/.icm files I'm using just let
me know and I'll email them to you.

Thanks to everyone for their help and support.

Regards,
Mike Resnick

Most likely monitor problem rather than problem with the drivers.

Does your bios show up ok or got the bar down the right when in BIOS too?

What you are describing is potentially a fault in the display panel
itself, where the pixels from the right edge of the panel are dead.
This can be caused by a failure in the chip driving the vertical rows
of those pixels.

I suspect that if you use "Auto Adjust" you loose the right most inch of

Re: [H] Acer P244W 24" Monitor - Looking for WinXP .inf Driver

Jeff,

Thanks for all the suggestions. Much appreciated.
I've been playing all night with the nVidia Control Panel, the nVidia
Desktop Wizard and the Acer P244W menu options.

No joy.
I'll try a couple of things after I get some sleep.
If I still can't get it to work then back to Costco it goes.

I already have the user manual for the P244W, but if you can please
shoot me a copy of your Acer P235H user manual.

Maybe it will offer a clue to try something else.

Thanks again,
Mike Resnick

I'm currently running WinXP/SP2 (not SP3), not Vista and not Win7.
I have the exact same card as you - nVidia 9500GT.
I'm running GeForceION Driver Release 196.21 [WHQL]

It doesn't bother me that XP identifies the monitor as Default Monitor.
What I'm trying to do is stretch my screen image to fill the monitor

Even though I'm using the nVidia control panel to "Adjust Desktop

edge.
All I can do is move the image but not stretch it.
When I move it the right edge disappears behind this boundary and
items on the right side of my desktop slide under this boundary and
can't be seen.

Are there any controls available on the nVidia Control Panel that
would let me stretch or resize my desktop image?
Or perhaps some free/open source utilities available?

Re: [H] Overclocking the Q6600 (was: New Phenom II X2 555 C3 revision)

Greg -

I'm also running a Q6600 (on an ASUS P5K-WS).
Comfortably loafing along a 3.2GHz.
All I did is boost the FSB to 800 and add a modest vcore boost to 1.23-1.25v.
What did you do to get to 3.6.
When I tried (not a very dedicated effort) all I could get it to was
maybe 3.4 but not remain stable.
Is it just luck of the draw, or are there any suggestions that you
think might be useful.

Re: [H] Letting your HD spin down every 2-3 minutes?

Regardless of how many times a HD is designed to spin down, it certainly
does not increase it's longevity and reliability to spin down more often.

It's somewhat similar to the suggestion to turn off you car engine every
time you come to a red light.
It may (or may not) save fuel, but it won't do your engine any good.

Re: [H] Email aliases

You can achieve email address Independence in a couple of ways.

You can change over to GMAIL and then tell GMAIL to reroute all email it
receives to your current "real" (Bellsouth/ATT) email address.

If down the road you end up switching to another ISP with a new email
address all you need do is tell GMAIL to reroute to your new ISP address.
As far as the outside world is concerned the only email address they will
know about is your GMAIL address.

You have another option available to you.
You can use a disposable/throwaway email address such as those offered
through SpamGourmet (e.g., dot duncan @ spamgourmet dot
com where is whatever unique identifier you want to use - e.g.,
hardwaregroup dot duncaan at spamgourmet dot com).
The main purpose of these disposable email addresses is that it allows you
to better filter and control SPAM.
A side benfit of this email service is that it also allows you to redirect
your email to whatever "real" email address you want to.
Note: CAUTION - spamgourmet.com sometimes incorrectly ends up on email
black lists which might prevent you from receiving email addressed to these
email addresses.
You can find more information at www.spamgourmet.com.

I'm sure there are other solutions which are available to help you reroute
emails from a pseudo email address to your current email address.

Re: [H] -LO- 60 mile WIFI?

The article claims that a 60 mile Wi-Fi range is achieved with unmodified
hardware and that only the software has been changed.
If that's the case it doesn't matter if Intel releases this in third world
countries (OOPS, I meant to say, emerging markets), the software
modifications will end up being available virtually (if not literally)
overnight in Europe, Asia and the US,

I'm sure Intel is very well aware of this,
So the question is, why is Intel attempting to kill the WiMax market?
Since Intel's enhanced Wi-Fi is totally software based, what are they trying
to accomplish?
Could it be they are truly altruistic?

All the Core2Duo Macs can be firmware upgraded to 802.11N. Apple just

Patch is free if you buy the new router, $2 to download from Apple's site.

Re: [H] DNS issues

If you have a firewall, check your firewall settings to make sure
you're not blocking access to their DNS servers.

Anyway, moved the modem over to my main box and wham, was able to get right

Where should I start my hunt?

Thanks
