That's a tougher question to answer.

The 840 Pro is positioned as Samsung's premium drive. It uses 19nm MLC NAND.

The 840 EVO is the successor to the original 840 (non-pro). It uses 19nm TLC
NAND. TLC NAND offers greater densities by storing 3 bits per cell instead
of 2 as with traditional MLC. It makes for a less costly drive, but has
fewer program/erase (P/E) cycles and lower write performance. The original
840 was a good enough drive (I have one of them), but the EVO was released
later with some pretty innovative technology to mitigate the write penalty -
specifically, it features a small amount of SLC NAND in the package that
increase write performance. However, it retains the TLC advantage of
offering higher capacities at lower price points.

I don't think I could deal with traditional raid. Having all same size

just works and works well.

If the synology ever dies I'm never going to switch to another brand.

No. Not the uplink port but rather any one of those 3 ports.

So you will have 2 devices directly on the apple router. 1 port from
the router to the switch and 1 device to the switch giving you 6 more
open ports on the router.

I say put everything on the switch and just a cable from the switch to
the apple router.

Performance should be a bit better since they are all on the single
switch fabric.

I just rebuild my things, with :
1. I7 920 + Red Scorpion Xigmatek HFS + DFI LP-DK-X58 + 6GB
Corsair, Sapphire H4850
2. i5 750 + Noctua NH-U12P SE2 + ASUS P7P55D + 4GB GSkill, HEC H4850

The i5 750 is easier to OC maybe is because it doesn't have
hyperthreading. With my room ambient temperature around 30-35degC
(40-45 degC inside case), the i5-750 can be run at 3.6GHz daily base
only increasing the BCLK to 180MHz.

The i7 can only get stable at 3.33GHz (only increasing BCLK
to166MHz) for daily use because it can hit higher than than maximum
recommended core temp (100 degC). Maybe I need to replace or modified the HSF.

Performnace wise in their OC condition, of course the i5-750 felt
snappier (higher cpu clock) then the i7-920.

I disagree completely with this statement from the analysis.
Projection-based technologies have had two advantages: they're cheap
 and
available in very large sizes. They haven't ever really been
 competitive in
terms of image quality with anything other than bottom-feeder LCD and
 plasma

Personally, I'm a big fan of Samsung's current lineup of LCD sets. I
 don't
really like their marketing though...for example, the new sets are NOT
 LED
TVs. They're LED-backlit LCDs. It's a major step forward in technology
 to be
sure, but it is still an LCD panel with the only change being from a
 CCFL to
LED backlight. AFAIK, the only places you'll find real LED TVs are the

I should also mention that several people that have seen my 52

 themselves
based on nothing other than the spectacular image quality. Sony's best

Plasma has always felt more like an interim technology to me, and the

 LCDs,
but the current generation of LCDs have gotten so good that plasma

Just my two cents. Opinions on this topic tend to be quitestrong.

Yes, they WERE the best, pricey, and worth it but no longer made AFAIK.

I wouldn't say that. The best HD display available is still the Pioneer
Elites, all be it they are very expensive. Plasma still has the best
color, and black levels and I think you would be hard pressed to find an
expert who doesn't think so. For high end 60 inch and above I still
think they have a place. They just need to get the power requirement
 down. and the price.

 LCD-Plasma Display Technology Shoot-Out
If you were shopping for a large-screen HDTV just a few years ago you
would have seen mostly Rear Projection HDTVs, based primarily on DLP,
LCD and LCoS technologies, plus a fair number of pricey direct-view
Plasmas, and maybe a few very expensive direct-view LCDs. It's amazing
how the TV industry has abruptly toggled into an entirely different
lineup. Now you'll see mostly direct-view LCDs together with a small
number of Plasmas. If you look in some back corner you may find a few
attractively priced Rear Projection DLP HDTVs. CRT and LCoS technologies
are now dead for HDTVs, and Rear Projection is a dead man walking.

Scientifically, it's hard to understand why this happened because CRT,
LCoS and DLP offered the highest picture quality at the lowest price,
while direct-view large-screen LCDs have historically offered the lowest
picture quality at the highest price. This seems to be the result of a
series of consumer misconceptions together with some high powered
industry marketing. Of course, all of the display technologies have
improved dramatically over the last few years, so we decided to revisit
this topic and do a new in-depth Shoot-Out comparison and analysis of
LCD and Plasma technologies to find out how they are currently performing.

drive was completely dead. No spin up, nuthin. Tried it in a couple other boxes
with now luck. I put the 1TB WD it replaced back in the box and am back up and

My boss keeps telling me to strengthen the security on the router. Well,
the password was changed and wireless is turned off. There is not much more
I can do, that I know of.

1. Would an additional Router added to the line between the Netopia and
Network switches increase security without slowing down internet traffic? If
it is a viable solution, which router should I get?

3. Make a Linux Box using Unbuntu and a Router between the Netopia and
Network switches?

I think you're misunderstanding what Sandboxie does. Think if it as a
condom for Windows.

When you run an app in Sandboxie, it sits between the app and
Windows. Any changes the app makes to the system are not saved unless
you explicitly say so.

You can also specify for each app any system resources it can access
explictly. And you can specify that certain apps always run
sandboxed, even when launched by other apps.

Sandboxie is almost like a virtualization except you can apply it on
an app by app basis.

I completed the build and hooked it up to the plasma. Very impressed so far.

The only problem I have so far is that there is a bit of video tearing. I
enabled both triple buffering as well as vertical sync and it helped loads but
still I can see a wee bit of tearing.

Any idea of how to get rid of it completely?

Also do you think it is worth moving down to a 65w CPU rather than a 95W cpu?

Almost finished building a HTPC.

Just installing some drivers now and some codecs so XBMC can run.

Got myself a

Gigabyte GA-MA78GPM-UD2H Motherboard
AMD 780G Chipset
SB700 (yeah but who cares) South Bridge
Athlon X2 64 7750 Black Edition
4 GB Crucial Ballistix RAM (yeah overkill, but I had them laying around)

So far I am quite impressed with this AMD build.  It's the first Phenom
processor I have used (the 7750 is essentially a Phenom sans 2 cores).
Performance is very smooth.  HD videos play perfectly on my computer LCD.
Tomorrow is the test on my Plasma to see if it works fine.  Processor is a
wee tiny bit on the toasty side for my likings.  If things don't go too
well, I will go for a 65W TDP processor.  This is a 90W TDP proc AFAIK.  But
my HTPC case is well ventilated and I don't expect anything to burn up.  The
mobo is completely fanless so that's a good thing.  I am using AMD's stock
cooler for the time being but may upgrade to something with a bit more
oomph.  Right now I wanted to remain as stock as possible and not break the
bank.

The CPU was a steal at $50!!!

All of this is running a pared down version of XP Professional and if things
go the way they do, then I will be a happy camper.

Just one quick question.  I can't seem to get CnQ to work unless I run the
Gigabyte Easy Saver utility.  If I don't run the utility, the Processor is
pegged at 2.7Ghz, but witht the utility it goes as low as 1.6 or
thereabouts.  Can I get the CnQ functionality without the Gigabyte
software?  Perhaps there is a CPU driver for XP?

Ok, I have an interesting issue, I'm sure someone here may know how to resolve.

I have a client who keeps video files which they post out for about 200/300
clients. Right now, when they release updates, everyone hits there server and
beats it to hell grabbing the files.

I was thinking it might be simpler if we could setup a system that would just
have a .torrent they could download, and then clients can get from them, of
course, but instead of 300 seperate connections, some would be getting some of
the data from their peers, etc.

Their server is a VPS Win2k3 box. Is there any software out there that allows
them to host a torrent tracker? Or, can they just use some client and leave it
running on the VPS and publish their own tracker?

I'd love something that was database linked, but that's hard to find. If this
could work, though, wow could we lower their monthly bandwidth cost.

The 975 Chipset motherboards (with the new revisions) support single core,
hyperthreading, dual core and quad core processors.

All those processors are based on the LGA 775 socket, so only BIOS/Chipset
support is required.

a heck of a lot of money on my computer and honestly, it was kind of a waste.

I'm waiting till the end of the month for VISTA to be released. Once it's

I'm constantly amazed at my wifes MACBOOK. It does everything so smoothly.

We just came back from a trip and my wife has been goofing around with iMovie
HD. And damn, the clip she rendered looks really nice!!

Although I would not want a MACBOOK for myself, I am also considering that.
Perhaps a MACBOOK PRO :) hehehe

But I want to have a look at VISTA Laptops first. And even if I do go with a
MAC I would want to wait for LEOPARD first.

Oh well..

utorrent is the best client. Azureus is good beccause
of the plugins, but other than that utorrent is much
more lighter on the resources.

The trick to any torrent based download is the
configuration of the router/firewall, torrent client
and the computer itself.

It's all very confusing at first, but if you need help
drop me a line and I can help you configure
everything.

By the way, the router/firewall config is the one
people don't do properly and that really screws up the
download by giving you slow speeds.

I am right now on vacation in ireland and the place
where I am staying at has 8 Mb DSL. Maxing out that

[H] Upgrade Dilemma

2006-08-05 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad
Hi guys, I need some help here. I am posting this
under Graphics Technology, because I am mainly
concerned about graphics, but this question bridges to
CPU performance a bit too.

Okay, I have a Winchester A64 3000+ Which I can
overclock and have overclocked to 2.45Ghz. At that
speed it is stable and runs [EMAIL PROTECTED] all day long.

That CPU is connected to the MSI K8N Neo2 motherboard.
nForce3 Pro.

The video card I am running is a Sapphire Radeon
X800XT PE AGP.

Now, here is my question...

Overall in terms of general system performance (i.e.
multi-tasking, dvd encoding, gaming, occasional photo
editing) is my current system better or this one..

Gigabyte 945G
PentiumD 805 @ 3.4Ghz
nVidia 7900GT

I actually have all the above parts (except the VGA
card) on a linux server of mine. The server is using
the onboard GMA 950 card. But lately it has been
gnawing at my brain to know what kind of setup would
be faster.

My A64 or the Pentium D setup.

I can easily sell my GFX card and buy a 7900GT. Also
just out of curiosity, would a 7600 class card be
equal in performance to my X800XT PE card?

Honestly, I am perfectly happy with my A64 system,
but.if I get better performance from the P4
system then I will go for it.

Also heat and noise are of no importance to me because
I am using a CNPS9500 LED right now in my A64 machine,
and that will go to the Pentium D if I swap.

My case is also extremely well ventilated, so no
worries there too.

Anyways, I am looking forward to a response.

The idea of having a CPU style GPU is something that I
dreamed up the first time I owned a BP6.

I was having delusions of being able to plug in a GPU
on the second socket.

I guess now that fantasy of mine is closer to reality!

I am honestly all in for this idea.

Just think of the possibilites!! Slapping on a nice
cooler for your VGA GPU and overclocking it sky high.

No more messy power cables to the VGA Card!
Everything goes to the mobo now.

The down side would be the memory (speed). But with
Hypertransport they could add a bank of memory just
dedicated to the GPU.

I see it as a giant leap forward and a small step
back. But overall I call it progress and I am all for

AMD + ATI: does it add up?

By Jon Hannibal Stokes , Anders Bylund

 Monday, June 12, 2006

At the very end of May, Forbes ran a short piece
 reporting analyst
projections that AMD is looking to acquire graphics
 chip maker ATI. The
article was essentially informed speculation, based
 ostensibly on some
analysis of the graphics and processor markets and
 on the recent news
that AMD is expanding their fab capacity. Nothing in
 the article
suggested that the speculation had its basis in
 anonymous sources,
leaks, or rumors, so the piece didn't make much of a
 splash at the
 time.

Last week at Computex, however, Intel allegedly
 began telling folks
behind closed doors that AMD is planning to acquire
 ATI. This news came
courtesy of Tweaktown, who cited a trusted and
 reliable anonymous
source for the claim. It wasn't clear from
 Tweaktown's report if Intel
itself had heard a rumor to this effect, or if the
 company was reading
the same tea leaves as the RBC Capital Markets
 analysts in the Forbes
article and coming to the same conclusion. Finally,
 last Friday brought
the following short note from our old friend Kyle
 Bennett at HardOCP:

Over dinner tonight in downtown Taipei it was
 explained to me that
Intel was making the rounds with their customers
 explaining exactly how
the AMD/ATI merger/acquisition was going to impact
 their business.
Closure of the deal is expected to pass in 2 weeks.

This looks fairly definitive, but only time will
 tell if the rumor
turns out to be true. As of this writing, the
 AMD-ATI
merger/acquisition is still in the realm of informed
 speculation and
anonymous sources. Nonetheless, that didn't squelch
 our excitement over
the possible deal here at the Ars Orbiting
 Headquarters. We think that
an AMD-ATI fusion is a match made in enthusiast
 heaven, and in this
article we're going to tell you why it would work
 from both a technical
 and financial perspective.
 Caught in the Crossfire

So what will it mean if the rumors are true? For one
 thing, it would
mean that AMD would finally have an in-house source
 of core logic
chipsets with the kind of features and quality that
 would better enable
them to compete with Intel in the consumer market.

Before Intel started its platformization approach
 with the Centrino
portable line, the company wasn't really thought of
 as a chipset maker,
even by many technical people. When people thought
 Intel they thought
CPU, despite the fact that Intel has long had the
 lion's share of the
PC chipset market. Intel is a chipset powerhouse,
 and their ability to
offer a complete CPU + chipset solution with
 integrated graphics and
networking gives them an edge in the consumer market
 that AMD currently
 cannot match.

AMD's lack of a complete, homegrown chipset solution
 has long been a
major weak spot, as those of us who've been burned
 by VIA chipsets can
amply attest. Back before NVIDIA and ATI got into
 the AMD core logic
chipset market, AMD users were stuck with whatever
 VIA produced. Even
those who later opted for an AMD-made northbridge
 still turned to VIA
for the southbridge (I/O hub) chip. Both NVIDIA and
 ATI eventually
entered the market and produced solid AMD chipsets,
 with the former
company occupying the higher end of the market and
 the latter left to
the lower end... at least until recently.

When ATI launched their multi-GPU Crossfire Xpress
 3200 chipset earlier
this year, the graphics maker finally had a chipset
 that could compete
with NVIDIA's Athlon offerings. AMD's acquisition of
 ATI would bring
that new chipset line under AMD's roof, giving AMD a
 complete chipset
solution that could set the company on its way to
 competing with Intel
 in quality, price, and features.

It's also important to note that Crossfire just
 isn't selling well on
Intel platforms. In fact, Intel won't even be
 supporting Crossfire on
 their forthcoming series of enthusiast-oriented
 desktop chipsets, the
965 series. Right now, if you really want to do
 Crossfire, then you'll
be doing it with an Athlon FX rig. So if AMD and ATI
 join forces, ATI
won't really be losing anything in

2006-06-10 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad
First of all, isn't a D 805 a bit too much overkill
for your father?

If you want something that will give the least amount
of problems, then I would suggest going for a Celeron
D and pair it with an intel original motherboard.

They make a bulletproof combo. No fuss, no headaches.

Plus the Celeron will be plenty fast for your dad.
Don't go for the higher speed ones, because they
generate more heat.

I also would assume that your dad, being old and all,
probably doesn't keep the temperature down too much at
home. So if it is warm and if the computer is in a
poorly ventilated area then you are in trouble, but if
you have a Celeron D 330 for example, then it barely
generates any heat.

[H] Major Decision........

2006-06-07 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad
Okay, I am in a dillema here.

I had a server that I use as a webserver/sql/samba
server at home.

For some totally bizzare reason my celeron 2.66
decided to give up the ghost and it utterly refuses to
boot. The mobo is an intel 865PERL original board and
that seemed to work fine, just seems the CPU is dead.

Anyways, the gist of the matter is that I went to the
market to find a replacement processor. No luck,
everything is LGA 775 now here in Saudi Arabia.

Okay, so I decide that what the hell, just upgrade
anyways. So here I am looking around and I manage to
find a Pentium D 805 for only like 100 Dollars. I
said, what the hey, lets pick that up and a 945G
motherboard and 2 gigs of DDR2 533.

Well

Guess what...

That 2.66 Dual core now is running at 180 X 20 =
3.6Ghz!! Stock heatsink, stock voltage.

Running [EMAIL PROTECTED] on both cores gives me like 68C.

So my question is

Should I dump my current Athlon 64 3000+ which is
overclocked to 2.4Ghz and replace it with the Pentium
system?

That would also mean that I would have to get myself a
PCIe VGA card also :(

Would it be worth it? Would it be faster than my
current A64?

One very important thing to consider is that when
running Aero Glass, the VGA card is being utilized.
That makes the power consumption go up. For desktops
that's fine, but for laptops

--- Greg Sevart [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

  Areoglass's requirements are also a joke. I'm
 sorry, but I shouldn't

 etc. I'm running on a
6 month old Dell Inspiron 700m laptop with an
 Intel 850 graphics
chipset. Granted, it's not the best, but I'm
 sorry, it should be enough
to run Vista with at least some of the 3D effects.

But the big claim to fame of Aero is a completely 3D
 rendered desktop. Gone
is the 2D mode--your desktop is rendered just as any
 modern game is. This,
naturally, consumes a lot more memory and GPU
 resources. I'm very curious to
see what else can be done now that the interface is
 truly 3D...

Honestly, I think one of the biggest advantages of
 Vista will be moving the
audio driver out of kernel mode and into user mode.
 I can't tell you how
many times I've had to reboot computers just because
 the sound driver
hiccupped. Printing is also supposedly new, finally
 getting away from the
old buggy spooler used for years. The new network
 stack is supposedly more
 responsive, too...

I guess I'm just cautiously optimistic. Make no
 mistake, though: Vista
probably won't be going on my machine until SP1.

The big problem in the version you submitted is that
 mpg cannot be

 After gallons and miles
 have been

two more times with different values for gallons or
 miles.

You don't need the if/then to accomplish this
 pattern.

[H] Compression Utility

2005-06-07 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad
Okay,

I have gone basically nuts trying to find a good
multi-threaded compression program.

At work we are working on a quad XEON (HT) server
which we do some backups on using simple zip programs.

Right now I have a batch file that zips using 7za
(7zip) via command line and dumps it on a network
shared drive.

Problem is that the directory that is being backed up
has about 3 gigs in it and about 150K files/folders.

7zip only uses a maximum of 12% cpu utilization.
Because it is hooking onto a processor (either virtual
or physical) and is utilizing it to the max. i.e.
100% / 8 = 12.5%.

Since the directory is quite heavy in terms of files
and file types the zip takes about 45 minutes if not
longer depending on what the server is doing at the
time.

I am looking for a command line version of a zipper
(or any other format) that is multi-threaded. I have
a quad xeon here for christ's sake. It shouldn't take
this long to zip. I want to see the cpu utilization
100% while zipping!

Thanks in advance for any help.

Damn, the world of computing and gaming is becoming more and more
exciting as time passes by. I can just imagine my grandchildren
having a fiber optic sphincter plug to the Xbox 2020 gaming server
and the PS7 online gaming service. They would be immersed in a
virtual world.

Also I can imagine the porn industry making a shit load of money...
lol

I know that its the games that make the machine, but lets say that
the games were identical which is a big possibility because of large
publishers such as EA and such
What game console would everyone buy?
Although I have been an avid MS hater, it seems that the XBOX is just
as powerful as the PS3 in terms of hardware.
Since the PS3 uses CELL and it is a revolutionary processor, a lot of
review sites have stated that the CELL will be hard to program for at
first. It was a similar case for the PS2. The first crop of games
were horrible (graphically speaking), but just look at GT4 and it's
hard to believe that the graphics are being rendered on a PS2.
So which one is it for everyone?
XBOX
or
PS3

Well I am sure they will lose money as they did with the last xbox on

new one I definitely want to own the next one.

Holy cow, three dual core 3.2 gig CPU's, Cell processors with 7 or 8
SPE's. running at 3.2gigs as well., Wireless controllers, gigabit
ethernet, etc, etc, etc.
Makes you wonder how they can sell these for what, 299 or so ? and
a PC
with half those specs costs hundreds more.

[H] Offtopic : Tire considerations

2005-05-08 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad
I have a car (Maxima) that needs it's tires replaced. I am going to
change all 4 tires.

The current tires are bridgestones ER44's and are 215 55 R 17's.
I am considering doing upsizing so I can get more wider tires.
Since I am not a tire expert, can someone fill me in on exactly how to
upsize? if I am not mistaken then 215 is the width of the tire in mm's
the 55 means that the sidewall is 55% of 215, the R is the speed rating
and the 17 is the rim size.

So does this mean that if I want to get wider tires I go for something
like 220 or 225 55 R 17's?

any problems with this ? seems to me ( in ancient history ) that
running two AV programs was a problem.
I've read about problems as well, but never seen them (never run in
this
configuration.) Of course, one could argue that since AVG isn't really
doing anything, they are only running one AV program. :)

Re: [H] AMD X2 Dual Cores..

2005-04-25 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad
AMD' Hammer architecture was created with dual core in mind from the very beginning. Having the memory controller on die, and hypertransport links are now beginning to flex their muscles.

However...

This is interesting too!! They claim that the performance is better than Opterons!

http://www.realworldtech.com/page.cfm?ArticleID=RWT042405213553

Just goes to show you how much importance a chipset plays in a system. The Newisys Horus chipset should be stunning too. Sure, they are beyond mere mortals grasps now, but this will be common place technology in 10 or 15 years time.

At least our children and grandchildren will be having a ball! :)

What I am really waiting for is XP Prof 64 bit (supposed to be released tomorrow) and more programs that utilize the dual cores, i.e more parallelism in the threads.
