Re: [H] Verizon DSL
Yes it can always still be the modem even if on the approved list since that list is slow to update. DocSIS 1.0 is most likely not going to go faster than 3mb/sec anyway even if stable. After the last round of Comcast network upgrades I was being told my SB4100 was not supported even though it's DocSIS 2.0 on the website's list. Replacement modem for $60 is on the high side IMHO: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?satitle=motorola+sb5* The Motorola SB5xxx is a good modem, pushing 8mb(1MB)/sec here happily for $53/mo. Combined with a WRT54GS v2 router Sveasoft Talisman firmware, a winning setup so far. Re: [H] Verizon DSL
If they can ping you, then they are none the wiser. Of course that's one of the 1st things firewalls block out-of-the-box rightly so. Mine has been configured to allow traffic from their private IP range for ping, DHCP, etc... I get a real kick out of them asking me to plug my box directly in flat out refuse to do so since I know they can talk to the modem that's all they truly need. On the same note I am quick to point out when I can talk to the modem diagnostic page but not the 'net. They have yet to convince me to plug in directly for any diagnostics. If the modem checks out the CPE still can't get out you need a tech onsite IMHO. Mike Resnick wrote: Sounds like your problem with Comcast might be location dependant. OK, I can get the Moratoria 5120 at CompUSA for 60 bucks after rebates, which is what I would kind of like to do. or Cox has the Motorola 5100 for $80 new or $50 used. I am tempted to buy a used one, just because it is COX and they would have to stand behind it. What do you guys think?

my sb5120 was only $60 from Cox ? At 01:51 PM 1/9/2006, you wrote: my sb5120 was only $60 from Cox ? I went down there and discovered that, in fact, the only modem they had was something called Amber ... or some similar name that I hadn't heard of. She said they had been using this for a year. It was very small, like about two packs of cigarettes . She did, however, say that the SB 5120 was supported, so at that point I decided to go out to CompUSA and get the SB5120 for 79.95 minus 20 dollar rebate = 59.95. I would of preferred to buy it from COX, for the reason you mentioned, but the AMBER looked like some odd ball generic modem and I didn't like the idea of it. Plus I had all these positive comments about the SB from you guys. I am just about to hook it up and try to activate it.

RE: [H] Verizon DSL
I've had nothing but great service with Verizon DSL at my place in Queens NYC. My girlfriend just switched over from Comcast in Pittsburgh to Verizon DSL. Sorry, but Comcast blows chunks. Wouldn't allow any aftermarket router to be used, shoddy service. I've been using Verizon for over 3 years now in Queens and have had to reset the modem maybe once a year. I just switched to the $15/month plan and the speed is quite acceptable. Only while downloading large files such as MS updates or large files do you notice it, but it seems the rest of the internet is slow enough that my connection is usually not the bottleneck. I'm currently using Optimum Online and its great except the $$$ so I'll be switching her also. You'll need to use their software to setup the modem and initialize your account, but afterwards, you don't need any extra software to access the internet. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Winterlight Sent: Sunday, January 08, 2006 6:29 PM To: hardware@hardwaregroup.com Subject: [H] Verizon DSL Do you guys with Verizon DSL have a reliable connection. I had it for a year while it was ok overall their supt sucks like most places these days. I had a Westell modem/router all in one unit that was a POS but I was able to disable everything but the modem part use my modified Linksys WRT54g instead for the router part. Anyhow VZ wanted me to continue to pay $29.95 for 1.5m/.5 service when for $39.95 from the cable co. I get 5m/.5 service so I went back to cable. What blows is that my cable co no longer has usenet service included that winds up being an extra cost where as VZ usenet access was the best that had ever seen by an ISP. --+-- Wayne D.
