>>Dear Ann,
>>
>>I'm writing to follow up on our correspondence from February about
>>my new young-adult book, The Blood Lie (Cinco Puntos Press). This
>>novel is based on a real blood libel that happened in Upstate New

>>the local Jews were accused of murdering her and baking her blood
>>in their "holiday foods." The blood libel happened in my hometown

Dear safranim,

If there's anything on this list you'd like, please reply just to me,
with the item #, title and author of what you'd like, and your
mailing address. I will reply within a week as to what I'll be able
to send you.The books are free, we ask for reimbursement for
postage/handling, if possible (MEDIA MAIL, US; outside US -
reimbursement for whatever's the cheapest way)

http://sefarimlatetlesifriyot.blogspot.com/2011/06/books-to-be-given-away-summer-2011-from.html

If you are in the Boston area, and can come by to pick them up, that
would be preferred. We also have many more not on this list to be
given away - all Judaica titles, most non-fiction, a hand-ful of
novels. All in good condition. The ones on this list were the
titles I thought would be of most interest to hasafran folks.

FROM RABBI MEHLMAN:

Martin Buber made a trip to Europe in the spring of 1947 to speak in
approximately 60 places in Europe. Among them (and most important to
our work) was his participation in the Woodbrookers Conference held
in Bentveld in the Netherlands in April 1947. This is the offical
name of the conference in Dutch with its English
translation: Vereeniging Arbeidersgemeenschap der Woodbrookers
(Union of Woodbrookers Collaborative) At that conference, he
delivered, as lectures, (we think 2???), The Way of Man According to
the Teaching of the Hasidim. We need whatever information about this
conference you can find.

CATEGORY I
1. Who invited him? (Any background to the invitation would help.)
2. How many lectures did Buber deliver at Benfeld?

3. Was there a printed program of the proceedings of the conference?
[If yes, could we get a photocopy or a link?]
4. Anything pertaining to the background of this conference would be
immeasurably helpful to us.

CATEGORY II

Who translated The Way of Man According to the Teaching of the
Hasidim into English from German in 1950? Maurice Friedman did not
translate it. I have that in a written note from him. Furthermore, he
does not know who did the translation.

CATEGORY III

Buber's 1947 lecture tour covered six European countries: Holland,
Belgium, Sweden, Denmark, France. and England. The average number of
presentations in each country would be ca. 10. In April 1947, there
would have been virtually zero Jews; let alone Jewish-oriented
organizations, in four of these six countries (England and Sweden
were the exception). Hence, the host organizations for Buber's
lectures would have to have been academic (best guess: Departments
of Religion, Sociology or Anthropology of the several Universities in
these countries), or else, liberal/progressive church groups such as
the English Quaker-associated Woodbrookers in Holland.

Are there any records, announcements, programs, reports, or reviews,
pertaining to Buber's visits and lectures, to be found in the
archives of the various universities in these six countries? The
lecture tour was made during April, May, and June of 1947. There is
also some evidence that the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where M.
Buber had the appointment of Professor of Sociology and Anthropology,
either sponsored his lecture tour or at least assisted with making
contacts, and perhaps helped with travel arrangements. (Buber's
personal correspondence indicates that his wife Paula and their
daughter traveled with him). Finally, the archive of the Buber
Literary Estate, housed in the Library of the Hebrew University in
Jerusalem, is likely to have related information.

[ha-Safran]: Keshet's Jewish Children's Book Writing Contest!

2011-01-31 Thread Ann Abrams
Dear safranim,

I offered to forward the announcement, below, to Hasafran, as the
contest is sponsored by a Boston-based group I'm very familiar
with, which does a lot of great work, locally and nationally. At
the 2006 convention in Cambridge, those of you who came to film night
may remember the Keshet-produced film we showed, Hineni: Coming Out
in a Jewish High School. And, given the recent flurry of emails on
Hasafran about inclusive books, this posting seems very timely.

Shabbat Shalom,

Ann

Announcing Keshet's Jewish Children's Book Writing Contest!

In response to numerous comments from gay, lesbian, bisexual, and
transgender parents and allies about the lack Jewish children's books
that include GLBT families or characters, we are launching the Keshet
Jewish Children's Book Writing Contest.

Keshet is seeking manuscripts of 800 - 1000 words for a fictional
Jewish children's picture book with a GLBT family or characters. We'd
like the story to be of interest not just to GLBT families but to the
larger Jewish community, so the storyline needs to be engaging,
funny, or surprising in some way, not didactic. The story should have
a clear, clever and interesting narrative plot with universal themes
and Jewish content. We're not looking for a story about what it's
like to live in a gay Jewish family, but rather a book with one or
more members of a GLBT Jewish family as the central character(s) in a
great story. We welcome stories that show ethnic diversity as well as
diversity of family structure.

The manuscripts will be evaluated by a committee of parents,
educators, children's librarians, and a children's book publisher.
The author of the winning manuscript will receive a prize of $250 and
the possibility of having their book published.

Please submit an electronic copy of the manuscript in a Word document
toand...@keshetonline.org by April 15, 2011. Illustrations for
manuscripts are not necessary or desired.

The contest winner will be announced in early May. The winner will be
notified separately by the publisher if his/her manuscript is chosen
for publication.

Please contact Keshet director of Education Andrea Jacobs with any
questions atand...@keshetonline.org or 617-524-9227.

Keshet is a national grassroots organization that works for the full
inclusion of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) Jews in
Jewish life. Led and supported by GLBT Jews and straight allies,
Keshet offers resources, trainings, and technical assistance to
create inclusive Jewish communities nationwide.

[ha-Safran]: Recent posting about books to give away: the blog url

2011-01-26 Thread Ann Abrams
Dear safranim,

I thought I'd hyperlinked the word "books to give away blog" in my
last posting, below, but I guess it doesn't transfer, for
hasafran. Some of you have asked for the URL, so here it is:

http://sefarimlatetlesifriyot.blogspot.com/

Thank you for the replies on the topic of what to do with old books,
which I know has been covered before, but you never know when new
ideas will pop up!
As requested, I've compiled the responses I received, below.

On a slightly different note: I've created a "Books to give away"
blog: with lists of books recently donated to us which we don't need
for our collection. Instructions for requesting them are on the blog.

[Hasafran]: What to do with really old books / Books to give away.

2011-01-20 Thread Ann Abrams
Thank you for the replies on the topic of what to do with old books,
which I know has been covered before, but you never know when new
ideas will pop up!
As requested, I've compiled the responses I received, below.

On a slightly different note: I've created a "Books to give away"
blog: with lists of books recently donated to us which we don't need
for our collection. Instructions for requesting them are on the blog.

HASAFRAN RESPONSES ABOUT WHAT TO DO WITH REALLY OLD BOOKS:

1) I have been listing on Amazon Marketplace - some sell - some may
be there forever. At some point I expect to throw those that are
there forever away.

2) Sell them online for $5-$25 and institutions who don't have them
will buy them ... eventually ... still, a way to raise $$$ for the
small library and a way to get items to those who want them :)

  3) One of our members has a used book store, so my suggestion is to
give it to them (maybe some time we can get material in return if needed)

4) A couple of years ago, there was a hasafran message about sending
Jewish materials to prisons for Jewish prisoners. That's where I've
been sending my books (though I have to say I've never heard back
from them that they received the
boxes). http://www.jewishprisonerservices.org/dormantjudaica.htm. I
also recently read a post about sending them to China, but I haven't
followed up on that yet. In both cases, you have to pay postage. My
paid job is in an academic library (I run my congregational library
as a volunteer), and we just sent almost 1,000 boxes to Better World
Books. They certainly don't want that many, and it was a special
case on our part, but they do have minimum. The plan is that they
sell the books, you get 15% of the sale, and 5% goes to a
predetermined literacy program (I chose Room to Read). They will
send the boxes, and they pay shipping.

[ha-Safran]: SSC Librarians in particular: Really old books

2011-01-12 Thread Ann Abrams
Dear safranim,

For those of you in synagogue and center libraries, what do you do
with really old books? I don't mean items that might be determined
to be rare books; I mean, books on Jewish subjects that were written
in the mid-late 1800's and early 1900's, that could be purchased
online for $5-$25, and that, when searched on Worldcat., are in most
university and Jewish research libraries.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks, and Shabbat Shalom,

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and the Yiddish Book Center present
MONSTERS AND MIRACLES:
A Journey through Jewish Picture Books
October 15, 2010 January 23, 2011
Exhibition examines the impact of Jewish writers, illustrators, and
cultural traditions on picture book art

Amherst, MAThe first-ever museum consideration of the Jewish
picture book, Monsters and Miracles: A Journey through Jewish Picture
Books, will travel from Los Angeles to The Eric Carle Museum of
Picture Book Art and the Yiddish Book Center from October 15th
through January 23rd. This exhibit is co-organized by the Skirball
Cultural Center (Los Angeles, CA) and The Eric Carle Museum of
Picture Book Art, featuring more than 100 original works of art,
texts, and related objects from time-honored classics and popular favorites.
Featured authors and artists include Eric Carle, Daniel Pinkwater,
Maurice Sendak, Margot Zemach, Mark Podwal, Francine Prose, Lemony
Snicket, Art Spiegelman, and William Steig. With historical examples
dating as early as the twelfth century, Monsters and Miracles also
encompasses the work of luminaries Isaac Bashevis Singer, Marc
Chagall, and El Lissitzky.
Monsters and Miracles investigates the significant contributions that
Jewish art and storytelling have made to children's literature,
tracing the development of the Jewish picture book from its early
cultural roots to its contemporary innovations. The works represent
an array of artistic media, including paintings, drawings,
computer-generated images, paper cuts, collages, as well as lavishly
illustrated Hebrew manuscripts. While texts are mainly in English,
there are also works in Hebrew, Yiddish, and Portuguese.
Children and adults alike will delight as they revisit their favorite
stories and encounter new authors and illustrators. In addition to
the artworks on display, the exhibition programming includes a
presentation by co-curators Neal Sokol and Ilan Stavans, a
presentation by Mark Podwal, and a latke breakfast with Lisa Brown.
See both the Carle website (www.carlemuseum.org) and the Yiddish Book
Center website
(www.yiddishbookcenter.org) for a complete list of programming.
Programming is also included at the end of this release.
As with all exhibitions, the books featured in the exhibition will be
available for families to read and enjoy. Additionally, from December
8 through January 18, The Eric Carle Museum's Art Studio will offer
Monster Mock-Up, where guests can create their own monsters inspired
by what they see in the galleries, including William Steig's Shrek!
and Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are. These complimentary
hands-on activities will further expand the visitor experience.
.The evolution of the picture book in Jewish history is a fascinating
story,. said Carle Museum Executive Director Alexandra Kennedy. .The
art of storytelling is deeply embedded in Jewish tradition and we are
pleased to work with the Skirball Cultural Center and Yiddish Book
Center to bring this important exhibition to both coasts..
Exhibition Overview
Organized into six sections, Monsters and Miracles addresses several
storytelling motifs.
The exhibition opens with a number of lavishly illuminated Haggadoth
dating back to the eighteenth century.
Throughout Jewish history, these illustrated liturgical volumes have
been used to recount the Exodus story at the

[ha-Safran]: Follett User group for Spectrum, Info-Center and Athena

2010-09-07 Thread Ann Abrams
Dear fellow users of Follet products Spectrum, Info-Center and Athena,

To review: This user group is made up of AJL libraries using the
above-mentioned products. The group coordinator (currently me) does
the work of collecting the checks, and sends them to Follett by
January 1st, and then Follett gives each instution a 15% discount on
the annual maintenance fee.

I took over coordinating this group a year ago, from Helene Tuchman,
who created the group many years ago, and continued to coordinate it
for a few years, after she retired.

I'm now looking to see if someone from among you would be willing to
take over this task. If not, I'll have to disband the group. You
would still have your Follett maintenance plan - but without the discount.

My colleague, Marie Cloutier, and I, worked hard last year to create
a spreadsheet that is in very good shape. We would be happy to hand
this spreadsheet over to whoever would be willing to take over as coordinator.

Please reply just to me.

Thanks,

Ann

[ha-Safran]: Commentary, similar to Anchor Bible, on Devarim Chap 12

2010-07-29 Thread Ann Abrams
Dear safranim,

One of our rabbis is looking for a commentary similar to Anchor
Bible, for Devarim, chapter 12 (Anchor Bible doesn't go this far, yet),

He's looking for the kind of context that Anchor provides-- when
the text may have been constructed… specifically chapter 12,
pertaining to eating meat. He's currently reading Tigay's JPS, and
finding it helpful. Any other suggestions?

FROM LOIS KOTEEN, BETH EL TEMPLE, WEST HARTFORD, CT

We are planning to update our synagogue library and are interested in
learning what other synagogues are doing. In particular, we're looking for:

Mission and vision statements

Collection policy

Budget (general fund, library fund, etc.)

Electronic resources - do you subscribe to any electronic databases
or on-line resources; if so, which.

Staffing (paid staff, volunteers, a combination; full-time,
part-time, a combination; trained librarians and/or interested others)

Programming - what programs does your library offer?

How would you characterize the use of your library: active (many
people visit each week); occasional visitors (a few each week);
inactive (visitors rarely stop by).

Thanks so much,

Dear safranim,

A public librarian colleague of mine sent me the question,
below. I'd appreciate your suggestions.

Thanks,

Ann

FROM A PUBLIC LIBRARIAN IN THE BOSTON AREA:

We've been wanting to add an Israeli magazine, preferably in Hebrew
and a monthly. A patron recommended that we could subscribe to
Hamodia http://www.hamodia.com/ Do you have any suggestions for a
public library? Our readers regularly read our English titles, but
there is also a large Israeli community using our library.

Hasafran: seeking contact info for artist in Jerusalem

2009-11-09 Thread Ann Abrams
Dear safranim,

A member of our synagogue is looking for a phone number or email
address for the following:

Artist name: Itzak Sasson

Address: Yoel Solomon in Nahalat Ha'Shivah neighborhood of Jerusalem

She saw his work in the store of Contemporary Jewish museum in San
Francisco. She already tried talking to someone in this museum, with
no success.

Any leads will be greatly appreciated! Everything we've tried has
not been successful.

Thanks,

I'd like to thank Helene for creating this group, and coordinating its
pieces for many years! This initiative, like everything else that
Helene has done in AJL, has benefited many libraries and librarians,
saved our institutions money, and gave us bargaining power in the
library software world.

Helene has been a wonderful model, and mentor for me, and I want to
publicly thank her for all that she has taught me. I'm sure you'll all
join me in wishing Helene all the best in her greatly deserved
retirement, that she can maybe now more fully enjoy!

[ha-Safran]: Birthday of Fanny Goldstein, May 15

2009-05-11 Thread Ann Abrams
Thought this would interest the AJL community:

Here's the beginning:

Born on May 15, 1895 [some sources say 1888], Fanny Goldstein devoted
her life to books and community. She was the first female Judaica
librarian and the first woman to direct a branch library in
Massachusetts, where she was head of Boston's West End Branch for
many years. A prominent figure in the Boston Jewish community, she is
best known as the founder of Jewish Book Week, which began when
Goldstein organized a display of Jewish books at the Boston Public
Library in 1925.

like to give a presentation, please send your proposal to our
program chairs, Marie Cloutier and Gil Rosen, by May 1st:

but it will help us in our planning.

[ha-Safran]: Online Encyclopedia of Jewish Women.

2009-03-04 Thread Ann Abrams
FYI.
Ann Abrams, Librarian
Temple Israel, Boston

It's here! The Jewish Women's Archive is proud to announce the launch
of the online version of Jewish Women: A Comprehensive Historical
Encyclopedia, originally published by Alice and Moshe Shalvi of
Shalvi Publishing Ltd., and edited by Professors Paula Hyman of Yale
University and Dalia Ofer of Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The Encyclopedia is now available for FREE at http://jwa.org/encyclopedia.
Previously available only on CD-ROM, the Encyclopedia is the first
comprehensive source on Jewish women. It features over 1,700
biographies, 300 thematic essays, and 1,400 photographs and
illustrations on a wide range of Jewish women through the centuries
-- from Gertrude Berg to Gertrude Stein; Hannah Greenbaum Solomon to
Hannah Arendt; the Biblical Ruth to Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Never before has so much well-researched and well-written material
about Jewish women been available in one place online. Accessible and
free to Internet users all over the world, the Encyclopedia appeals
to a wide range of readers, including educators, activists, high
school students, researchers, scholars, and the merely curious. Its

Subject: Rachael Stark possible catalog
Thanks to advice from lots of helpful librarians, I have found what
sounds like a good catalog for our size and type of library,
librarian and users. It looks to my noncatalogers eye like Surpass
Select, at http://www.surpasssoftware.com/select.htm makes sense. Now
I'd love to hear what the pros think!

I created a tiny summary of this catalog and ILS. Can you take a
glance and tell me if it does, in fact, make sense for a small
library run by a reference librarian with basic cataloging skills?
Thanks a ton.

[ha-Safran]: Donations

2008-04-01 Thread Ann Abrams
Dear Jenny,

Ask people to stop sending their books, sit down with your committee,
and map out a collections developoment policy. If folks still send
books ( and they will) box them, and don't look at them until you're
done setting up your infrastructure with lots of clear policies that you
can refer to and hold up to others.

FYI, if people are desparate to send books somewhere, NOW, refer them to
local charities, thrift shops, used books stores, etc.

Or, if they're willing to pay the postage:

In Seattle, WA, there is a Jewish Prisoners project. Contact Chaplain
Gary Friedman. [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

There's someone in China who posted to hasafran awhile ago, collecting
books for Judaic studies programs: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And, tell your congregants if they REALLY want to be helpful to your
new library, they'll type up an author/title list of what they'd like to
donate to you, and send you the list by email. Then, you can tell them
what from their list would be useful for the collection. But tell them,
too, that you first need to get your systems in place before you can
deal with receiving donations of books.

If you'd like to see a sample of a gifts policy, visit our website:

  http://www.tisrael.org/study/library.php?page=467

Good luck!

Ann

[ha-Safran]: Query from Canadian Picture Book Writer

2007-12-21 Thread Ann Abrams
Dear Lesley,

This one came to my mind, re: your first question:

Terrible, terrible! Bernstein, Robin. Kar-Ben Copies, c1998
A contemporary retelling of the folk tale, It could always be
worse.

 >From School Library Journal

K-Gr 4--A modern-day version of a traditional Jewish folktale. When
Abigail's mother marries a man with four children, the girl finds her
new home far too crowded and chaotic and seeks help from the rabbi. The
woman advises her to bring even more into the tiny house (bicycles,
pets, "dozens of cousins"), creating situations that are increasingly
"terrible, terrible, worse than before!" Brightly hued, cartoon
illustrations nicely convey the sense of chaos, with objects, animals,
and family members practically spilling off of the pages. However, the
characterizations are weak, particularly those of the four stepsiblings,
who remain nameless and voiceless, seeming to accept the drastic changes
in their household with little more than a grimace. A timely premise in
this age of blended families, this book is not as much fun as other
standard versions of this story, such as Ann McGovern's Too Much Noise
(Houghton, 1967).

[ha-Safran]: Synagoge in Gloucster, Mass.

2007-12-18 Thread Ann Abrams
It happened this past Saturday in the early a.m. in the center of
Gloucester - a coastal town in northeastern Massachusetts. One person
died who lived in the apartment building that was destroyed; the temple
was next door, and was also destroyed, along with its torahs.

When I hear from the congregation re: ways they need help, I will post
to hasafran.

Below is news from boston.com from the last few days:

New book by Boston area author about religion and friendship

2007-10-30 Thread Ann Abrams
Dear safranim,

Below is an announcement by a Boston area author and his NY area
co-author who will at my synagogue's book fair this year. I thought
it might be of interest to you. Here's their
blog: <http://www.thefaithbetweenus.com/>http://www.thefaithbetweenus.com/

Ann Abrams, Librarian
Temple Israel, Boston

FROM AUTHOR PETER BEBERGAL:

My book, The Faith Between Us, co-authored with Scott Korb, with a
foreword by Freakonomics author Stephen J. Dubner, is available now
from Bloomsbury. The book tells two distinct but interrelated
religious stories both towards and away from faith. Filled with
stories of my struggles with Judaism and Scott's Catholic religious
struggles, Faith tells the story of a faithful friendship above and
beyond tradition, and even belief. (Please some advance reviews below.)

We'd love to send a copy of the book to your library for you to read
and pass around, and if you think you might like to have a book
discussion when Faith comes out in the fall, or possibly plan an
event with us, we'd be delighted.

Best wishes and thanks for your consideration. I hope to hear from you.

Peter Bebergal

  617-864-8393

Faith Between Us: A Jew and a Catholic Search for the Meaning of God

Publishers Weekly starred review:

"What's the saying? Never discuss sex, God or politics if you want to
keep your friends? In this particular case, the questions of faith
and God are actually what brought Bebergal and Korb together,
initially through a correspondence related to their writings for
various online magazines. Faith was not something either particularly
discussed with their other friends, even though both hold advanced
degrees in religion. Like a conversation that continues all night
into the early light of dawn, this collection of stories is filled
with the deepest of personal feelings and confessions as well as the
mundane details of everyday life. The formatthe telling of a story
by one, followed by a reflective epilogue by the otherhighlights not
only the seamlessness of their dialogue, but the depth of their
friendship and understanding of each other. No topic is taboo; amid
their questioning of faith and God come tales of addiction, neuroses
and ineptitude. These thirty-somethings are as diverse as their
upbringings, yet between them they represent a little bit of all of
us in this thoughtful, engaging debate about the virtues of faith and
the existence of God."

"A magical conceit, a true dialogue between friends on a subject
that dearly needs to be talked about."

-- Stephen J. Dubner, coauthor of Freakonomics

"When was the last time two men sat down and wrote about their friendship?

This is a beautiful book - frank, open, searching. It is, to be sure,
a 'religious' book, but its great virtue is that it erases the
quotation marks around that word and makes religious insight and
longing seem, like friendship, a natural part of the world."

-- Jonathan Rosen, author of Joy Comes in the Morning

"This is the book for this moment. In an era of rigid (and false)
dichotomies -- when one is told to be either a blind believer or a
dogmatic atheist -- Bebergal and Korb offer a third way, the path of
respect, of common sense, of dialogue rather than doctrine. There
are fewer hot topics today than religion, and this book provides an
accessible, heartfelt, compelling, and ultimately inspiring message
that will speak to many of us, religionists and secularists alike."

--Niles Elliot Goldstein, author of Gonzo Judaism and founding
rabbi of the New Shul in Manhattan

[ha-Safran]: Tribute to Helene Tuchman

2007-10-23 Thread Ann Abrams
Provide yourself a teacher and acquire yourself a friend.

Mentor: Someone whose hindsight can become your foresight. *

On the eve of the first game of baseball's World Series (Go, Boston
Red Sox!) I would like to pay tribute to someone who, if we had a
Library World Series, would definitely be in the starting line- up,
and would be a serious candidate for the MVP (Most Valuable Player) award.

Helene Tuchman, long-time AJL member, retired this past Spring from
her position as Librarian of the Rabbi Marshall R. Lifson Library at
Temple Emanuel, Newton, MA. Before those fourteen years at Temple
Emanuel, she was the Director of the Watertown, MA public library,
Librarian of Congregation Mishkan Tefila, Chestnut Hill, MA, and,
Librarian at the NY Public Library in the Bronx – in all, 45 years of
enriching the library profession. In May of this year, Temple
Emanuel paid tribute to Helene as part of a lovely Shabbat morning
service that several of us from the New England Chapter (NEAJL) attended.

Given Helene's many years of participation in AJL, I would like to
engage in what I like to call lashon ha-tov – speaking well of
someone - in celebration and appreciation of her.

IN HONOR OF HELENE

You know how sometimes you don't know enough about something to even
look into it? Helene has helped me, and many of us in New England
and beyond, in this area. Long before the Internet, Helene told me
about the Boston Regional Library network, something I knew nothing
about. This has clearly been the gift that keeps on giving, with
free access to several databases, not to mention hundreds of
colleagues all over Greater Boston and beyond. Several weeks ago I
was notified by this network about a literary database that my
patrons were entitled to use. I forwarded info about this resource
to our clergy and staff, and one of the clergy responded with, "This
is fantastic!"

Thanks, Helene, for helping me to look good at my job!

You know how you're always looking for ways to economize, but, you
really think there's nothing else you can possibly do? Several years
ago, Helene started a user group for those of us subscribing to
software from the same company (Follet, previously Sagebrush, before
that - Winnebago). This group began locally and Helene gradually
expanded it beyond New England, with all of its members paying a
discounted annual support fee.

Thanks, Helene, for saving my institution money! (Which also makes me
look good, btw** )

You know how sometimes you have sensitive situations with co-workers
or colleagues, and you need someone, who you completely trust, to
chat with about it?

Thanks, Helene, for lending an ear on many occasions, and helping me
sort through and defuse some potentially sticky situations!

And, you know how, when you're planning a convention, you need to
have on your committee people with experience, intelligence, and,
most importantly, a good relationship with the local kosher caterer?

Thanks, Helene, for making sure we all ate very well in Cambridge
at the 2006 convention!

I could go on and on, as I'm sure many of you could. And, I know
Helene has not retired from AJL (she is still running the Jewish
Libraries Follet User Group) and I'm sure she will continue to help
out in many other ways. So, on behalf of all of us, particularly in
NEAJL, but I will presume to speak for all of AJL :

For all that has been, and in anticipation of what will be:

THANKS, HELENE!

Ann Abrams

Dear safranim,

I know I can't send attachments on hasafran, so, if you think you can
help me with my query, please reply to me offline, and I'll send
you the image that I refer to, below:

A member of our congregation donated to our synagogue a lovely
needlepoint that her mother made, showing images from stained glass
windows. Our museum committee wants to list the provenance of this
piece before putting it on display, and they've asked for my help.

They have a photocopy of a photograph from a book, which I can send
you, showing the stained glass images. The stained glass images
have words in Hebrew only, and images relating to the three festivals
(Pesach, Shavuot, Sukkot). The donor's mother died 2 years ago, and
the daughter does not know what book the photo was from. All she
knows is that her mother started working on the needlepoint in 1970,
and finished it in 1995; and that the windows were in a synaogue in
either Jerusalem or Haifa.

If you think you can help me with this, I'll be very appreciative.

[ha-Safran]: Bibliography about Jewish Women and Religious Life

2007-03-20 Thread Ann Abrams
Dear safranim,

Has anyone in AJL done an annotated bibliography about Jewish Women,
covering these themes: liturgy, images of God, rituals, role in
religious life of synagogue, in the Bible, creating midrash, as
bible commentators, as rabbis, ? (I checked the bibliography bank -
didn't see one). If so, would you be willing to send it to me ASAP?

Thanks very much,

[ha-Safran]: VHS to DVD of in-house productions

2007-02-05 Thread Ann Abrams
Dear safranim,

I'm looking into transferring about 500 videos of our rabbi's
lectures, from vhs, to dvd. Since this is in-house, and our rabbi,
there are no copyright issues. Can anyone in the U.S. recommend a
company that does this? I've gotten one quote from Video Transfer in
Boston: $15 a DVD for 30 min programs; $25 a dvd for 90 min
programs, and would appreciate recommendations.

Thanks,

Dear AJL members in New England,

By now, most of us have hopefully recovered from the June convention,
and it seems time for us to get together, now, as a newly energized
chapter! Judith Segal, Director of the Hebrew College Library, has
kindly agreed to host our first meeting of the new year, FRIDAY
NOVEMBER 17, 9:30 - 12:00, at Hebrew College, in Newton, MA. Judith
will also be giving a presentation on the topic of Think in a blink!
or, don't think at all.

Below, is a tentative agenda for this meeting:

9:30 - 10:00/ coffee, tea, muffins, shmooze

10:00 - 10:45 / D''var torah/ Welcome to newcomers/ Post-convention
thoughts, ideas, issues/ Convention
   2007 in Scottsdale, AZ

10:45 - 11:30 / "Think in a Blink..." by Judith Segal, Director of
the Hebrew College Library

11:30 - 12:00 / What do we want to do next? Brainstorming for future
chapter meetings

12:00 - Lunch will NOT be served, BUT, there is a very nice kosher
cafeteria @ Hebrew College; and lots of places to eat in nearby
Newton Center.

PLEASE NOTE: Hebrew College is a kosher facility, and does not allow
outside food of any kind to be brought in.

For
directions:

. The college is about a 15 minute (uphill) walk from the Newton
Center MBTA station (Riverside/Green line)

Parking will be available in the Hebrew College lot.

RSVP to me by November 10, so we can plan for seating and refreshments.

I look forward to seeing you all then!
