[hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. -- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] I had 3 servers full pretty much 24/7 and since the implementation of the customs tab I have had trouble even getting them populated during peak gaming hours. I have received complaint after complaint from members about the new system. The majority of players did not even know there was a customs tab to find our servers. My Dustbowl server was ranked in the top 3 on game-monitor and has been dropping consistently since the last update. Just wanted to say thanks. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
-- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] If you had enough regulars, your servers would stay full. For instance, on Friday Night, I like to run party mode on my servers, which places them on the custom tab. I can still keep them full from the time it starts up until about dying gaming hours (around 4-5 AM CST) The custom tab is a deterrent to generic pubbers, but your regulars will still see you on their favorites tab. I will agree though, pubbers generally won't even touch the custom tab. Maybe if people started actually using the custom tab, though, people would generally shift over to it based on their desire for gameplay. With all the server operators exploiting the internet listing as it is right now, no one will ever use the custom listing because the servers like that are still in the internet list. If no server operators use the custom list, then neither will the players, thus why you see such a lack of use on it. To be honest, I think if more server operators used it and educated the players they play with on the use of it, I think there would be a lot more people using the custom tab. Now, granted, it will never compare to the usage of the internet tab, but all this "cheating" to get on the internet list isn't going to help the custom list at all. No one is going to use it if there aren't any good servers there. Just a thought. -Cc2iscooL On Thu, Mar 13, 2008 at 12:41 PM, Timothy L Havener < [EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > This is a multi-part message in MIME format. > -- > [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] > I had 3 servers full pretty much 24/7 and since the implementation of the > customs tab I have had trouble even getting them populated during peak > gaming hours. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
-- [ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ] I would also have to agree on this change hurting the overall community of TF2. Partitioning the two types of servers vanilla and custom is something that should not be done to help all servers servers an equal chance by listing all of them on one list showing everything by default. Then if someone wants to filter them they can manually add filters. PaaahlaseI have plenty of regulars. You don't get two servers into the top 10 rankings without a lot of regulars. Two of my servers still get populated during peak gaming hours, but they empty out around 1-3 am and fill back up around lunchtime whereas they used to stay full 24/7. Not being listed on the internet tab really hurts in the morning hours when most of my regulars aren't on. And I posted to all my members about the customs tab and most didnt know what it was. Valve always here "your going kill the game Community" They heard it when css came out They heard it when steam came out They heard it when they shut down the won servers. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
None of those examples have direct context to this situation. Myself and others can provide proof of how this hurting our servers. Two of which have no alterattion other than they 8 slots larger than the standard of 24. Why do 64 slot servers show up in CS:S which clearly isn't designed for that many players, but yet a 32 slot TF2 server is so bad it has to be put on a boxcar and shipped to the custom server tab. Just leave us be and let the players have a fair server filtering system that allows ALL servers to be seen. - Original Message - From: "Munra" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: Sent: Thursday, March 13, 2008 4:24 PM Subject: Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community. > Valve always here "your going kill the game Community" > > They heard it when css came out > They heard it when steam came out > They heard it when they shut down the won servers. > > I am more worried about my servers havin ips in the 205 ranges rather then > the custom tab killing 32 player servers > - Original Message - > From: "Spencer 'voogru' MacDonald" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: > Sent: Thursday, March 13, 2008 4:23 PM > Subject: RE: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 > community. > > >> You pulled the words right out of my mouth. >> >> -Original Message- >> From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >> [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Timothy L Havener >> Sent: Thursday, March 13, 2008 4:06 PM >> To: hlds@list.valvesoftware.com >> Subject: Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 >> community. >> >> PaaahlaseI have plenty of regulars. btw, even though I support you guys in spirit who are using workarounds to bypass the custom tab you are really hurting those of us who decided to not run the plugin any longer and are on the custom tab. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
I agree, but what we basically have here is game theory: Sure it would help everyone if we *all* stopped, but that's highly unlikely. In the mean time, delisting my server has little effect other than making it perma-empty (i've tried). I hate to lay all the blame on Valve, but honestly, what did they expect? I'd love to be part of the solution, but emptying out my server right now isn't really going to help that. If someone (or Valve) can come up with a better plan in the short term, however, I'm more than willing to help. The current situation is bad for everyone. - Neph Timothy L Havener wrote: > btw, even though I support you guys in spirit who are using workarounds to > bypass the custom tab you are really hurting those of us who decided to not > run the plugin any longer and are on the custom tab. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
I disagree that it's hurting "everyone" some of us don't really have a problem running a 24 slot or less server. I think valve has compromised quite a bit to allow something that their servers were never designed to do. and in creating the custom tab they have decided to offer some support for this functionality. I think this is more about meeting the requirements that are printed on the box than trying to purposefully deny 32 slot ops a server listing. > I agree, but what we basically have here is game theory: Sure it would > help everyone if we *all* stopped, but that's highly unlikely. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
Yeah, when valve said they wanted admins to work within the bounds of the tags and they were going to be doing some PR and user education about the tabs issue, I decided to respect their wishes and let my server slide over to the custom tab. As a result, it was empty for the longest time since I launched it. I just recently upgraded my TF2 servers so I could host more servers, I just set up my box and 20 minutes after the server was started it was full and remained full most of the time until I let it slide to the custom tab. The server was empty for 11 hours, rather than forcing my server to the internet list, I simply lowered the player count from 30 to 24, this had mixed results, my community did not like it and they were playing on other servers. On top of valve not doing any PR or education about the custom tab like they said they would. So, the options for me are: 1. Run a 24 and lose my community because a majority of my community prefers 30 players 2. Let my server go to the custom list and then die a horrible death. 3. Keep my community active by working around poorly thought out changes. I don't like doing it, but the alternatives are much worse. Sorry valve, perhaps it would have been best to beta test this feature before forcing it upon everyone. Because if anything needed a beta test, this would have been it. - voogru. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Nephyrin Zey Sent: Thursday, March 13, 2008 11:27 PM To: Half-Life dedicated Win32 server mailing list Subject: Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
My point was Valve will always do what they think is best and will not change it. I would also really expect something like this for dods and css when they are rolled over to the orange box. Which sucks cuase my gungames servers have the most population of players on reg basis. And I am still more worried about of the server list displays the servers by pinging/fanning out from the clients ip. My servers are in chicago but with a 205 ips I really only see Canadian players. - Original Message - From: "Timothy L Havener" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Half-Life dedicated Win32 server mailing list" Sent: Thursday, March 13, 2008 9:02 PM Subject: Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community. > None of those examples have direct context to this situation. I think the best suggestion so far has been: 1) One tab for "Standard Servers", this is the default selected tab when you first kick up the game after installation. 2) One tab for every server, "All Servers" or something, this one comes with advanced filtering options. No, the best one is one tab, but many filtering options and that's all. Why people should find the servers looking in 2 tabs. It's simply annoying. And i think that's not impossible that Valve revert the changes they made and give us back one nice tab with nice filtering functions in bonus. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
I think I have to agree with this. It would be best if there was just one tab, but a more comprehensive filtering system. The tag idea is great. It will really help people find the servers that they really want. The custom tab throws a lot of people off though. I work for a GSP and its unreal how many "server admins" are complaining about not being able to see their server on the list, and its because its on the custom tab. So tab idea, great concept, but execution was a little off with the different tab. I mean it was worth a try, but just better filters would be more effective. I put that you think one tab is best because it is what you are used to and the idea of two tabs doesn't fit your mental model. I also put that comprehensive filtering options are great for your more hardcore gamer but that gaming needs to push out of hardcore alone. By offering simpler systems for people who are not so technically minded as hardcore gamers helps open up the game to the masses, people who when they first play a game don't want to be bombarded with strange rule x, y and z, get fed up and quit the game. I agree with the One Tab idea 100%. Penalizing us for running Custom/32 Player Servers is definitely not the best idea. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
sv_tags is a good idea. I'd like to add a tag to it indicating the game play changes my pluins make so that they are easy to find (or avoid). Unfortunately, the way it is implemented now, no server operator would run my plugin if I actually used sv_tags the way it was intended. The default tab needs to show all servers with a filter or another tab to show only Standard (or Custom) servers. That's the only way I see server admins actually running plugins that change gameplay (and theoretically should change sv_tags to let players know). People are going to be bombarded with strange rule x, y, and z whether or not they play on a so called vanilla server or not. Because it's possible to be on the so called vanilla list when your custom, without forcing yourself onto that list. If I make a plug-in that adds grapple hooks and party hats, do you think valve is going to automatically detect it and add "grapplehook;partyhats" to the tags? I'm pretty sure most people who are able to download and install steam are also able to click a check box that has the words "Standard Servers Only" next to it. Check boxes are a common feature in most applications and many web pages. It's not for "hard core gamers" anymore than sending an email is for "hard core communicators." Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
I agree with that entirely. Just adding a checkbox (like in the whole Battlefield, CoD and (probably) Quake series of games) would work nicely, it's a method most "hardcore" gamers are used to and one that newer gamers should get used to, because it's the industry standard. Hell, even if valve have to add a "this server is using these rules" thing to the loading screen, that'd be better than tabs I'd personally love to be able to add handy info like "offensivepissheads;custommaps" to my server without getting bumped over to the short bus tab. One tab vs block of multiple filters. From my experience, then yes, there are many people who play games who will find a block of filters intimidating. It's not the INDIVIDUAL check box, but the eight or so controls that are growing. Heck my dad has Steam installed, mum did it for him, and he would never go near the filters. No I don't, tbh I think the criteria for heading to custom is not right. If the system was write then you wouldn't mind having your plugin add those automatically. However I do believe a tab is more visible than a small checkbox hidden away at the bottom that most people never even show. -- With regards, Matthew Cheale +44 (0)56 000 36985 [EMAIL PROTECTED] This e.mail is private and confidential between Multiplay (UK) Ltd. and the person or entity to whom it is addressed. There is no other solution to this problem other than to add 3 tabs (internet, standard, custom) or to go back to one tab with all of the new filters. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
But, that only proves my point. The way it is setup now, he will be joining voogru's example "party hat and grapple hook" server because it's on the Internet tab. If all servers were shown with an option to show only custom servers, plugins like that would identify what they were and he'd at least have a good chance of noticing the option and avoiding them. As it stands now, server admins and plugin authors won't use sv_tags the way it was intended because it kills the server. Showing all servers by default with the option to turn off customs is the only way that the system can work. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
Only if "all" was the default. Then valve would get thousands of retards complaining that they keep ending up on servers with weird settings. Any solution for your average gamer has to be what they expect, where they expect it, and most importantly, not involving more than one list - multiple lists just complicates things. I think that is the main problem here. Valve is catering to mouth breathing dumbies who don't have the collective intelligence of a pile of walnuts. They need to stop making the game dumber and start making the gamers smarter. Exactly. It amazes me that the custom tab 'solution' was used over a small edit to the internet tab. You more than likely 120% right on that. A lot of the guys that play on my server don't even bother with steam forums because the infection of idiots that bitch cry moan and complain. I'm still trying to understand the reason besides 'balance' that we're limited on the player count. You give counter-strike 64 players years ago and the game was such a hog on resources you couldn't run 64 on the hardware they had back when it come out. I was thinking valve would want to keep up with the ranks of EA and such and have massive servers to play on. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
A lot of the 'idiots' are usually young kids who had the parents buy the game for them. They just play the game, somebody else paid for it. I don't think valve refunds games, so once someone buys the game, it's up to them to get theirs money worth out of it. And if that requires learning how to play the game and use the games interface that's their problem, not valves. Counter-Strike Source is hard, at least for me. I die in 2 seconds on a 'stock' server. I paid for Counter-Strike Source. That does not mean valve should make Counter-Strike source easier for me to play, it means that I should play more Counter-Strike source if I want to live longer than 2 seconds. The situation with the server list is a little different, I guess people are complaining that every server they go on is different. I agree that this is a problem that should be resolved. Servers should have the current tags and server operators should list what changes they have made in their tags. If valve does this decently I'll have the tags on my server. And I will list a bunch of changes, even ones that do not affect game play. Players that do not care about what server they join simply won't use these new filters, while the ones that do care have the option of using the new filters and players that then complain they can't find stock servers can be taken to a little page on the steam help site that explains how to use the filters. The custom server admins win. The vanilla fan boy players win. The idiots win because now they will learn something new about the game they just purchased. Problem solved. Everybody wins. - voogru. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Nephyrin Zey Sent: Friday, March 14, 2008 1:38 PM To: Half-Life dedicated Win32 server mailing list Subject: Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community. Well personally, I like the tabs, but I'm an average gamer who only plays about 2 to 3 hours a night I don't want to play dustbowl 24/7 (de_dust anyone) i don't want instant jib i don't want instant spawn, I want to play on a std server where I know what happening Personally love the list -Original Message- From: P. And it will be just as easy to find these servers if all of the filters were moved to the internet tab along with the internet tab showing all servers. Everybody just loves to forget the little detail about server ops installing plug-ins to make changes, that will change the mechanics of the game all without adding tags. Resulting in custom servers still being in the internet tab, and players left with the same problem as before. - voogru. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [BT]Black V Sent: Friday, March 14, 2008 5:16 PM To: 'Half-Life dedicated Win32 server mailing list' Subject: Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
Perhaps all the custom servers are seeing a drop in attendance because players are actually choosing to play on Vanilla servers (I know I do). Many players I know use a 3rd party serverbrowser or join from the Steam Serverbrowser, neither of which care about the tag system at all. Players with Servers listed in their favorites also don't care about the tag system at all. - Original Message - From: "StrontiumDog" To: "Half-Life dedicated Win32 server mailing list" Sent: Friday, March 14, 2008 2:22 PM Subject: Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community. >I like the tabs. > A lot of people are vocal about not liking them. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
Right, prior to the tag system players were blindly flocking to 32 man servers even though they really never wanted to be there in the first place. As soon as they got into their server they slammed their fist into the deck, looked up to the heavens and exclaimed "A 32 man server? Drats, not again!" Players aren't looking at the custom list. Sure, feel free to tag things like insta spawn servers, lollerhats servers, etc, things that players can't see directly from the server list, but what justification is there for delisting 32 player servers that are otherwise run unmodded? Spare me the 'minimum requirements' argument, because there would be more effective ways to deal with that. The server list clearly states how many slots a server has, isn't that sufficient warning for the players? Yes once my server gets 4 people in it, it gets to 32 in no time, but it used to fill itself before and be full 24/7, but it needs help now on the custom tab. No one complained about 32 player servers in beta and in early release I don't see why they're such a problem, if you don't like them don't join them its as simple as that. Other servers shouldn't be censored just because some people don't like 32 player servers in general. It's not like your computer is going to shit itself just because it sees a 32 player server on the list, its your fault if you connect to it not the server operator's. Re: [hlds] Valve, thank you for virtually destroying my TF2 community.
Exactly Killer. I don't see how having 32 man unmodded servers impact you in any way. You can argue about a lack of transparency on insta spawn servers, etc, but 32 man servers that are otherwise unmodded are hiding nothing. Don't like it? Don't join it! Is it really that difficult? I personally dislike 24 man servers, I find that the action is too sparse and that the battlefield generally feels empty. Should I start a crusade as well? Basically all I commented was "still seeing them on the 'internet' tab". I'm sure its quite frustrating for the few trying to comply with Valve. I look forward to see what they have in store next.
