I just updated my server to the latest beta, and there is a really strange 
bug(?). When you're crouching or standing still while jumping, it's making this 
jump sound - as you're running. You can't hear the sound yourself when you're 
jumping.

Is this a bug or a new wanted feature?

Some of the changes to hlds_run look familiar. ;)

I cleaned up this new hlds_run a little more.

Changes from latest official hlds0319 beta version:
- DEBUG is treated as an integer all of the time, rather than as an
integer in some cases and as a string in other cases.
- New -beta parameter allows server files to be updated to a beta
version when -autoupdate is set
- Script syntax message includes -beta parameter help

The specific changes include:

Server changes:
- Fixed HLTV staying in players list even after disconnect
- Fixed server hang when a user connects with a specially crafted info string
- Cleaned up hlds_run script a little (Linux only)


There is also a client piece to this beta now, so if you run your Steam client 
with "-beta hlds0319" on the command line you will get it. The client piece 
fixes a couple exploits in the game engine.

Ok, I got it to work. You don't pass it as an argument to
hldsupdatetool, but rather to steam:

$ ./steam -command update -game cstrike -dir . -verify_all -beta
hlds0319

It updates engine_amd.so, engine_i486.so, engine_i686.so, hlds_run,
libtier0_s_linux.so, libvstdlib_s_linux.so, proxy_i386.so, and
steamclient_linux.so.

The new hlds_run fixes the FreeBSD processor check, re-enables the cpu
family >= 15 check, removes the 64-bit checks, and adds a CPU=K8 check
only for FreeBSD machines that lack /usr/compat/linux/proc/cpuinfo.

This new behavior means my Pentium 4 server now uses hlds_amd instead of
hlds_i686. I haven't checked any other machines yet, but performance
doesn't seem to be noticeably different either way on this one.

I played on this particular server and didn't notice anything wrong.
Nothing abnormal shows in the log files either. If this really fixes the
INVALID_STEAM_TICKET problem, I'll be extremely happy. No more phone
calls to reboot!

Ehm. Just to make shure...

You know that you just should run the steam binary. The hldsupdatetool.bin
is just a package for the steam binary and, to my knowledge, dont takes
any options.

able to join server with a HLTV which has the same ID as them :p

As I see now, the HLTV can get every possible SteamID, we got:

STEAM_0:0:0
STEAM_0:1:0
STEAM_0:1:1
STEAM_0:1:2
STEAM_0:0:3
STEAM_0:1:3
STEAM_0:0:4
STEAM_0:1:4

and so on. It seems something increases on every connect.

I have runned with this for awhile and it does actually help.

They still crash, but its gone down from 30-50 crashes per day and server
to 6-12 per day and server.

At first it did not help due to the variable being set.

'ps auxefwww | grep hlds' will print out all variables that are used.

Yesterday a server had 68 crashes (or restarts), today its 6 within the 14
hours that have elapsed today.

Even if it seems that it is not bulletproofed it is still better. Its even
good to notice that the server crashes even if the server is empty.

Well that CPU_MHZ overrides cpuinfo I think so it shouldn't matter.

My exact commandline is:
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. CPU_MHZ=3000 ./hlds_i686 -game cstrike +servercfgfile 
server2.cfg +mapcyclefile maplist2.cfg -port 2 +maxplayers 
10 -secure

BTW I really sent my original message only so that developers know that 
there seems to be some correlation between the problem and cpu frequency 
hlds detects. I didn't know people will start to try to use it (it's 
very ugly "solution").

regarding the /proc/cpuinfo, I don't have /proc/cpuinfo - its
/compat/linux/proc/cpuinfo. Maybe you should test it for a long time and
see what happens, also what is the command line that you use to start your

I don't think you get more performance from higher values, I actually 
have no idea for what hlds uses this value. It normally reads cpu 
frequency from /proc/cpuinfo but you can set it yourself with that variable.

CPU_MHZ=3000 ./hlds_run -game cstrike ...

or in shell script:
export CPU_MHZ=3000
./hlds_run -game cstrike ...

I only tested it for a few hours so it still might crash (doesn't bother 
me that much as our servers are run on demand so they don't run 24/7).

Also, there might be some unexpected effects on server when doing this, 
but I have yet to see any.

Anyway, let's hope Valve fixes the problem soon.

Dunno if it helps you in any way but when I specify CPU_MHZ environment 
variable to value lower then actual cpu frequency then it works fine on 
FreeBSD 7.0-RELEASE (tested on both xeon and opteron and it seems that 
CPU_MHZ also has to be multiple of 100).

Yep, map only appears to change in the query information after a client 
connects.

Additionally, the rules information doesn't appear to be reflected 
real-time either.  I had previously assumed rules information was now 
resynced on map change, but on further testing that doesn't even seem to 
be proper.

This is all presumably because they have the steamclient library pumping 
out the server queries now, instead of the engine doing it like it used 
to.  I assume they don't sync changes immediately to the steamclient 
library.

Pretty major undocumented changed. :/

Each of my game server crashes aprox 30 times a day. Which makes it quite
unplayable... =/

I have upgraded the server again. But still see these crashes. I jumped
some upgrades last time. ie: some installed ports.

I am currently running FreeBSD 6.4 w linux_base-fc-4_13.

One server is actually not crashing. Or has not at least since 01:30.
The other 3 are crashing.

Hi alfred,

some problems with the new hl update. The map name is not updated
after a mapchange, which is send by the details packet and the
mp_timeleft/mp_nextmap doesn't work anymore. in most cases it is 0.
HLTV server havn't playercount anymore and the rules packet is
sometimes emtpy.

I should test before I post.  The cpu usage is improved but it is still 
much higher than it was, and it is fluctuating pretty wildly.  I'm 
finding it ranges between 40% and 70% with no changes in the number of 
clients.  I believe it used to range between 40% and 50% under the same 
conditions.

Hi!

The server crashes under FreeBSD 6.x while using SMP. I have not tried any
other version of FreeBSD. Without SMP they dont crash, at least not as
often. The crashes occur on a empty server and could be within a couple of
minutes and sometimes it works for over 30 mins, but eventually they will
crash.

One other issue is that the servers coredumps when exiting them. It does
not crash on a vanilla install. So I dont know if it is a metamod issue or
if it is a issue with the server itself when it comes on handling the
plugin.

Its working here on 6.2 although we are seeing:-

Lemme guess you seeing this through HLSW or a web script??  Alfred said
earlier that the server queries have been updated to the source style so
any tool or script that queries the GS will think it's a source based
server.

So it looks like we can no longer run custom dmc_i386.so's on our servers? 
All I get is cannot get dll API from dmc_i386.so if I try to run a custom one 
:-(
No more DMC CTF or other custom mods? that sux :-(
DMC was already dead enough, oh and metamod doesn't work anymore either on DMC.

Are there more out there that do not get sv_visiblemaxplayers to work 
anymore? We are trying to hide our reserved slots, which worked before, 
but now it reports that 24 slots are open even if it is set to 20 or 22. 
Bug or feature ? =)

None of our servers has -nomaster set. it seems the api for querying
servers changed.

Looks like the getchallenge part of the query is now obsolete ... can
anyone from valve confirm if this is going to stay this way ?

Hello Alfred,

After updatin to the lastest version of HLDS i`m receiving two
messages when i`m trying to start the server back.

[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; unable to update local steamclient. 
Continuing with current version anyway.

and

registry.cpp (216) : Assertion Failed: !"Implement me"

Should i be concerned about these messages?

PS: The clients can connect to the server but i donno if it will crash
soon or not.
