Re: [Hornlist] Das Horn bei Mozart

2008-12-09 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello Kit, any book on demand requires the complete lay-out work done before,
requires also a basic investment not below 1.000.-, They it up all the price
except a small commission to the author, which accumulates to re-pay the
initial investment only after 100 to 200 copies are sold. The author has done
all the work but gets quite no profit.

I will explore other possibilities, where I can have full control about the
production, where I can start with a minimum order of ten copies for a
reasonable price. If the book is distributed directly only without book stores,
the price will look much better, as these sellers expect a 40% dealers discount
or more. Will keep the list informed. Format will be changed off course, as
these printers will not do square format, only regular book format. Financing
binding 10 copies at one single order, well, should be manageable. Will try to
make a new lay-out after years end, means early in January. Shipping single
books will not be that expensive, as book rate is 6.-EUR/kg + registered (all
airmail), so to be affordable.

David and all,

I have 1 that I was going to put up for sale on Ebay. I had taken pics
and
everything already. I bought around 1982. I just was trying to figure
out
what the selling price would be. The book has been well preserved by
the
excellent cover that was provided with it. Maybe someone can help me
determine
what a fair price would be because I know I paid quite a bit for it in
the
1980s. I just knew that it was more use to someone else right now than
taking
up room in my bookcase.

Re: [Hornlist] "Das Horn bei Mozart"

2008-12-07 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The book was published as limited edition of 1.100 numbered copies back
in 1980. It has not been reprinted since, but been sold out since for a
long time. I am not going to reprint it, despite earlier plans, but the
resonance with the horn community was just as few rain drops in the
Sahara desert, well over the years some dozen. But this would not
finance such a project.

I still work on redoing it, including updates, but it would be "book on
demand" only and not be cheap (over USD 100.- surely). In takes time,
off course. And as a retired I am not in a position, to invest some
25.000.- USD or more in a single project (printing 500 copies some
5.000.- EUR + binding 12.500.- EUR + .). And where to store 500 big
books ? How long would it take to sell 500 copies ? Book on demand,
perhaps. I skipped the possibility to publish it as DVD due to the
fact, that there is no financeable copy protection.

Very sorry for the less good news.

Greetings

Hans

Exactly. It works nicely in C for a baritone. IIRC, Hans has mentioned
doing it

For those playing arrangements: If you have a reasonable basson & a reasonable

the Freischuetz Ouverture by C.M.v.Weber for that ensemble, just a few copies

Without joke, here is the trick. Insert the mute a few measures earlier,
but lift it out a bit, so it sound like open. One 1/8th rest will be
enough to push the mute in. But it does not matter at all, if that
single note is played open but very softly or con sord. It just looks
interesting in the score.

I just played through the Haydn trumpet concerto's slow movement up a
step,
in concert Bb, and think it sits really nicely for me on the horn now.
I'm
playing the entire concerto accompanying my son and it would be a real
hoot
for me to play it on the horn, but I need the music, in concert Bb and
not
concert Ab, in a piano reduction for my wife. I don't need a horn part
as
I'm OK reading it from what I've got.

I looked at the Mutopia Project web site and didn't see this piece - if
anyone is aware of it in that form, or as Sibelius file (the
music/computer
program I use), please let me know, and thanks in advance.

Hi David,

They used to be available from KaWe Editions Music (in
Holland) but
since KaWe Editions has been purchased by Herr Pizka, you
could most
likely order them from him. My understanding is that they
were
originally published shortly after Brahms's death (circa
1897) and the
version I have was edited by Ivan Bialimtchev. Definitely
valve horn
material!

If you are really stuck for the book, contact me off-list.

Hope this helps!

[Hornlist] A Devil to Play / shameless plug for my friend Jasper Rees

2008-11-19 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Good afternoon listmembers,

As the holidays approach I'd like to remind everyone that "A Devil to Play"
(the US version of "I Found My Horn"), by Jasper Rees, will be generally
available in the States as of December 2. I have read the UK release and
thought that Mr. Rees, who is a journalist by trade, skillfully described his
quest for hornistic achievement (trying to get through the slow movement of
K447 at a British Horn Society function after a 20 year lay-off) while dealing
with cultural stuff related to playing the horn in the US and abroad. So, for
anyone who ever had to face a midlife crisis (or anticipates having to do so
someday), or anyone who wants to get the inside scoop on how some of the horn
world's movers and shakers think/behave, or anyone who just desires the real
details on Leutgeb's relationship to WA Mozart that only a dedicated researcher
can provide, this book should be the first thing on your holiday shopping list.
For yourself. For your therapist. For a friend or family member or non-horn
playing significant other who long ago gave up on seriously trying to
understand you . . . this book may provide closure. It will make a great gift.
Buy it for the holidays. Or better yet, get someone to buy it for you. Think
of it as an investment. I suppose that it's even theoretically possible that,
one day, long after the play based on "I Found My Horn" has completed it's run
on the West End (yes, someone saw fit to produce a stage version of the book),
and Jasper is internationally famous, the person in your life who you will need
to impress the most will comment on Jasper's latest project and you will say:
"oh yes, I've been reading him for years, in my opinion his early horn related
stuff was his best work". Best regards to all, LD

2008-11-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
That´s the reason, why people should arrive to rehearsals early enogh to
give the horn time to adjust itself to the room temperature. - Well, for
Steve, if you play the horn in a quite arid region or environment, there
is no wonder, why moist does not accumulate in the tuning slides (cannot
in my horn, as tuning slides are pointing up). The moist, anyway,
accumulates in the lowes tube, see geographically.

It is all just relevant if you play in quit cold environment AND if you blow a
lot of air through the instrument. If you just let the air go, you will not
heat up yourself much - and the water problem is (nearly) eliminated. - But it
is a welcome excuse for split notes: MY HORN WASN´T WARMED UP. Nobody cares how

2008-11-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello all, I own a recording of "Die Post im Walde" (The Postman in the forest)
with the Stiegler Quartett & Adolf Stiegler playing cornet, recorded around
1900, "Farewell to the forest" by Mendelssohn, also with the Stiegler quartet.
They are on one-sided recordings, also marked 555 + xxx (copies) evidence copy.
Bruno Hoyer & Gustav Kaleve playing the Serenade for Flute & Horn by Emil Titl
and Schumanns "Traeumerei" on the same record, played by Bruno Hoyer - with a
big "nerve" vibrato. This record is recorded a bit later (around 1910-15: still
royal chamber musicians)

How do they sound: scratchy but lovely.

But their sound cannot be compared with todays sound, as the microphones (very
simple devices) were very poor that time.

Greetings

Hans

the medicianl form of liquid paraffin that is commonly known as mineral

[Hornlist] Glimmerglass Experience

2008-08-19 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
We have just spent three days enjoying an assorted program of
Shakespeare themed operas courtesy of the Glimmerglass Opera Festival
in Cooperstown New York. I'd like to offer my congratuations to
hornplayers Aaron Brask, Patricia O'Connell, Martin Burki, Victor
Sungarian and Gabriel Kovach for the fine performances they provided
through all five programs and a special commendation should go to Mr.
Kovach for his playing of the Nocture in the Midsummer's Night Dream. Kudos
should also go to Conductor David Stern for having the good taste to allow Mr.
Kovach a solo bow from the pit at the conclusion of Sunday's performance of
Giulio Cesare in Egitto (fiendish difficult horn parts on that one)! Best
regards to all, LD

[Hornlist] Chinese Bb Horn For Sale

2008-08-07 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Greetings -

Ouch! Did I make a mistake!

So, I have a detachable bell Chinese Bb horn for sale. It's in excellent
condition, of course, since it's hardly been out
of the case. I can send pictures - just ask.

If you want it, and can receive it somewhere in the US, just tell me how
much you want to pay (money, if you don't
mind) and it's yours. If more than one person feels a need for this horn,
I'll decide over the weekend.

I don't want to take it home with me.

Maybe you own a steam roller or a hydraulic press and can make a wall
hanging? Maybe you can sand the bell down
to a reasonable thickness.

Regards,

Carlberg (on vacation in Pinckney, Michigan)

[Hornlist] Piccolo "horns"

2008-07-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I've been told these piccolo horns are really glorified flugal horns. It is
wrapped & given rotary valves to look like a mini French horn, but is really in
the trumpet/cornet/flugal horn family (Bb soprano). The mouthpiece can be a
horn type mouthpiece as is a flugal horn mouthpiece. Some of these are deeper
cup trumpet mouthpieces that mimic a horn mouthpiece (sort of a cross between
an alto horn mouthpiece and a true horn mouthpiece cup). They are made by
Berkelely Wind Instruments out of China. I've also heard that the guy who owns
Berkeley has made some decent horns, but they are scarcely available. Here's
link to a place they can be found:
http://gosuperdvd.stores.yahoo.net/professional-piccolo-french-horn-u-never-seen-before.html

This guy in the you-tube video
does a great job playing it w/ horn styling, though. My guess is that horn
players would have difficulty playing it as well as he does because we'd have
to learn a new technique. (Some one please correct me if this is wrong.)

If the youtube video link doesn't work you could probably find it by searching
you-tube for "piccolo horn" or "I play trumpet but..."

[Hornlist] RE: A Brass Study Is A Brass Study?

2008-07-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The only one I've used is Clark's Technical Studies for Trumpet (or cornet). I
like Clarks becuase it has simple finger patterns repeated in EVERY key,
starting low & moving up chromatically, so I don't have to waste time learning
difficult new tunes just to improve my finger dexterity. Another advantage is
that I don't have to wear out my chops pounding away at super high stuff
passages.

I went to the music store today to p/u Arban's trumpet method, but they didn't
have it in stock. I did however see some other very interesting books. There's
a Clark's for bass cleff which contains many of the same exercises but in bass
cleff. However, I purchased a book of "Kopprasch Studies for Trombone w/ F
Xxtension", which covers a broader low range. It contains many of our familiar
& BELOVED [*snicker, snicker*] Kopprasch etudes for horn, so it will be easier
for me to focus on improving fluency reading bass cleff because I already "know
them."

[Hornlist] RE: Tight as can be...

2008-07-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
If it's a grip issue, I might be able to help. I had a grip problem when I
came back to horn 2 1/2 years ago. I was playing a Holton 179 & my left hand
would get painful cramps from gripping & holding this heavy instrument. The
cramping most definitely impaired my technique. I tried various commercially
made straps & found they added too much bulk and made it even more difficult
for my short fingers to reach the levers. I fashioned a strap made of thin
cotton cloth that anchors on the pinky hook enabling me to play the horn w/o
putting my pinky into the hook. Because the weight of the instrument is
supported by the "crotch" between the thumb & first knuckle, there's no pain,
strain or cramping. I gave one of my straps to another small female horn
player and also another to my 11 year old student. It solved grip & cramping
problems for them as well.

If you think this might be the issue, contact me off list.

I couldn't agree more w/ Sandra & the others on this thread. When I first came
back to horn, I was having quite a bit of difficulty especially w/ 16th note
passages. My little old lady fingers just didn't want to more fast enough. My
private instructor sent me home w/ H. Clarks technical studies. W/i a week or
two I was playing & sight reading 16th note passages w/ dramatically improved
proficiency and ease. I now play Clarks almost every day.

Another example: I used to play circles around one of my horn colleages.
Suddenly, w/i just a couple weeks, she seemed to take off like a shot w/
lightening fast fingers playing circles around me. What did it for her? The
Arban trumpet method book.

Thanks for reminding me about this. I need to get the Arban book to remain
competitive! ha ha ha!

all can play well regardless of the air stream direction. Hope this helps.

What is this obsession with embouchure? Look at performence results.
Can you play a three octave scale from the second fundemental C to the C above
the staff and return to the fundemental C without a "break" or "shift" in your
embouchure and maintain the characteristic tone of the horn? If you can do
this and have beautiful sounding tone, play in tune and keep the tempo going,
who cares where your mouthpiece sits?? Forget about obsessing with the how and
obsess with the doing.

[Hornlist] Acoustics/ practice mutes

There's only one way to find out if you will like a practice mute. Try it.

I bought a Silent Brass practice mute. I hate it. I brought it w/ me on
vacation, but found that I only used it once during the week. When we checked
in to motels, we asked for a room w/ no one above, below or next to us so I
could practice my horn. No problem!

I have an unusually tolerant husband who can sleep through anything, even the
noise that comes from my horn.

That said. I bought my Silent Brass mute based upon a recommendation from a
friend who LOVES his and uses it almost daily. He connects CD recordings to his
& plays along anytime of the day or night.

His spouse isn't like mine! ha ha ha!

[Hornlist] MPC & tone quality

2008-06-13 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I read a paper by Froydis W. that said something to the effect that the
mouthpiece (mpc) you play has more to do w/ your tone quality than the horn you
play. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.) I recently had an experience that
supports this idea.

I met w/ a horn friend recently to check out our new gear -- our horns. I
recently purchased a rose bronze Holton Merker and he'd just purchased a new
Atkinson Erfert. The other guy had an absolutely gorgeous tone on his Atkinson
horn. We traded horns, but not mouthpieces. To my surprize, he sounded almost
exactly the same on my Merker as he did his Atkinson -- AND -- I sounded almost
exactly the same on his Atkinson as I did on my Merker! It wasn't until we
traded mouthpieces that we both sounded significantly different. His mpc is a
Bach 7 & mine is a Farkas DC. His tone was bright & mine was very dark by
comparison.

I'm sure this isn't much of a revelation to the mouthpiece ghuru's out there,
but it was a shocking revelation to me. The interesting thing though, is when
I played his horn w/ his mpc I didn't sound like him. And, when he played my
horn w/ my mpc, he didn't sound like me. Hmmm... I wonder what this all
means...?? Guesses?? Comments??

[Hornlist] Fuzzy and Sloppy Attacks

2008-06-11 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Michael, I came back to horn 2 1/2 years ago after not playing for 33 years.
My sputtery, splatty attacks the first few months were just horrid. As I
persisted, they became cleaner & smoother. I think your sloppy attacks will
improve over time. Others may disagree, but I don't believe tongue placement
contributes to sloppy attacks nearly as much as the quality of the lip
vibration. I believe the greatest contributor to sloppy attacks is an
inefficient, out of shape embouchure that's taxed beyond it's conditioning.

I usually tongue on the back of my upper lip, but sometimes I tongue on the
back of the teeth or even higher depending on the sound I want. My attacks are
rarely fuzzy or sloppy unless I've been over playing, over woodshedding too
much on high passages. I believe your attacks will improve w/ time as your
embouchure shapes up. Be gentle & don't push yourself too hard.

One thing I do every day that I made a huge improvement in my attacks & overall
tone is the Wendell Rider warm up ("Real World Horn Playing") every day. An
appropriate warm up is the key for healthy, efficient chops. Included in
Wendell's warm up are air attacks, timed rest periods and a slow gentle
approach. Especially at my age, somewhere beyond 50, these elements are
essential for flexible & efficient chops.

[Hornlist] Opinion on Bach horns

2008-06-05 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I've heard that the student Bach double horns are really made by Yamaha. At
least, that's what the music store owner told me. When I was looking for my
first horn, I tried a new Bach double horn, but it didn't play nearly as well
as the Holton 179, so I bought the Holton. I think the best deal any student
can get for a first horn is a used Holton 176, 177, 178, 179, 180, etc.
Overal, Holtons have an even & consistent response in all the registers and are
easy to play in tune because the pitches "bend" easily. You definitely get more
horn for you money if you buy a used Holton. After John Barrows
tried a Holton 177, that's all he'd use.

I shy away from Yamaha's because every one I know that plays one, has
consistent intonation problems. Yamaha's are good for very skilled players, but
I don't recommend them for students or amateurs like me. I play a Holton Merker
276 & a Holton 179. I get a beautiful sound out of both & have no intonation
problems on these two horns. I played a Yamaha 667 for six months & was always
struggling w/ intonation so I sold it.

Just my 2 cents.

[Hornlist] horn position

2008-05-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I'm a small, thin gal. Resting the horn on my thigh promotes perfect posture &
good breathing for me, so that's how I usually play. I can play off leg, but
only for short periods before my shoulders get painfully crampy. I've decided
that if I ever have opportunity to perform a long solo & want to really stand
out, I'll probably start looking for a sturdy stool w/ an ergonomically placed
foot rest. Why not? The string bass players do it.

[Hornlist] community bands

2008-05-17 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I think it was Steve who wrote:

It's a shame that all communities don't have a John Falskow, the new chairman
of the music program at Tacoma Community College & director of it's community
band & orchestra. He's a breath of fresh air for bands and orchestras. He
started the TCC Symphonic Band three years ago w/ only a handful of students &
community musicians. It's grown to a full size symphonic band in a short time
because Dr. Falskow keeps things interesting & always inspires us to do our
best. His philosophy is that wind bands, being a rather new ensemble in the
music world, should be cutting edge when it comes to repetoir. Dr. Falskow has
instroduced us to some of the most fascination & interesting music imaginable.
Very rarely does our horn section feel like we're playing "filler" stuff. Our
parts are very challenging and interesting, and musically satisfying. For our
next concert we're doing wind band music from Japan. We're playing pieces by
Hiroshi Hoshina, Michio Mamiya, Yasuhide Ito, Akira Miyoshi, M.L. Daniels and
Bin Kaneda. Always interesting, never boring; maybe a little confusing for the
audience, but we gather a larger audience at every concert, so we must be doing
something right!

I laugh after every concert when I bring my 76 year old mother-in-law. When
she hears something familiar (and we do play some traditional pieces) she
always enjoys it. But when it comes to some of the comtemporary pieces she'll
say, "I don't get it!" But she always comes back for more! ha ha ha!

Dr. Falskow also introduced some very interesting pieces to the previously very
traditional chamber orchestra, and we (at least the brass & percussion players)
are loving the changes. (But, of course, I can't speak for the string players!)
This Wednesday evening, I'm performing Kerry Turner's Quartet No. 1 as part of
the chamber music concert w/ an American music theme. I can't wait to hear what
Grandma Wells will have to say about it!

[Hornlist] RE: Brass Quintet

2008-05-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Steve,

I'm new to this list but I know a lot about quintet playing. I'm a member of
one
of the very few full-time touring brass quintets.

For sure horn players in brass quintet don't get many rests because there are
too
many notes to be played by too few performers. The higher brass need more rests
than the lower brass, but when the trumpets drop out who's left to play the
melody? We are.

You may have come across the answer to your problem already: create your own
arrangements. Throughout history, most small-ensemble music has been composed
with specific performers in mind. Brass quintet arrangements are no exception,
and if you buy something written for someone else it may not suit you.

To make an arrangement with more rests your best bet is to start with music
written for 3 or 4 parts. That way you won't be missing the composer's original
intentions, and somebody can rest. Lots of classical music scores can be found
for free on the internet, just include the words "public domain" in your search.

I suppose if you didn't want to go to all that trouble you could buy quartet
arrangements with flexible instrumentation, then take turns sitting out. Robert
King is the most well known arranger of this type.

Keep playing brass quintet!

[Hornlist] Brass quintet -- I want more rests........

2008-05-16 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I had to laugh out loud when I read this! I've never played in a brass quintet,
but I regularly play in a larger brass ensemble, a horn quartet & a horn trio.
I wish all arrangers of brass music were as smart & savvy as Kerry Turner. Mr.
Turner distributes high parts between the 1st, 2nd & 3rd horn so no one gets
excessively tired. My quartet can woodshed & crunch Turner's stuff for 2 hours
& still have lip left. A few months ago, I performed w/ a horn trio. We did a
variety of pieces that were written in the traditional style w/ 1st being the
high horn & third being the low horn. We mixed things up so each of us were
playing 1st one third of the time. We did an arrangement of Mendelson's
Nocturne that was also written in the traditional style, but I rearranged it so
that we changed parts four times during the piece. It was beautiful to have
three different horn players singing the melody at different times and, of
course, it was a whole lot easier than having one person do the whole 1st part.

Be sure, it will not be the last scratch. If scratches would affect the tone
quality, every brand new mpiece should would be better, but lose its quality
due to mini-ware Would you not better think, that the tone quality has
more to do with the players embouchure Do not follow the old path of many
players, blaming the equipment. It is not the equipment (except it is wrong
completely), but it is more the player, who makes the tone.

Next time somebody might ask, if a black dress is better suited to produce a
darker sound than a greydress ??? No end for curiosity.

[Hornlist] Mozart & Leutgeb

2008-05-10 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello all-

I wanted to say thanks to all who responded to my inquiry. I have ordered
Jasper Rees' book, and my library jot got 'Das Horn bei Mozart' in this
morning. In response to Gary Green, I do realize how difficult from a
musical-historical point of view it is to accurately understand people of a
different land and different era. Maybe I didn't make it clear that this was
for a *short* project just to get us used to searching scholarly journals/books
and writing proper bibliographies. I wasn't hoping or needing more than about
1/2 to 1 page of information. I also realize that this then is a somewhat silly
assignment, but it is what I have to do, and if I can learn a little about
Leutgeb that is great.
Again, thanks for your help, and when Jasper Rees' book gets in and I read it,
I'm happy to share my thoughts about that here too.

Take care,

Re: [Hornlist] Mozart & Leutgeb

2008-05-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
David, there is not much info on this topic. We have the living dates of
Leutgeb, the inserts of his name into the K.447, Mozarts own listing of his
works with the remarks "Leitgebisches Quintett" (K407) & "Ein Waldhornkonzert
fuer Leitgeb" (K495, some remarks in Mozart biographies (Jahn, perhaps) about
Leutgebs activities in Paris, Milan & Frankfurt & Vienna. We know that Leopold
Mozart lent him some money to open his Cheese business in Vienna. There is the
inscription on K.417, the colored entries in K.495, the listing in the
membership list of the Haydn Societaet in Vienna. There is the publication of
the K.495 in Vienna obviously arranged by Leutgeb as competing edition to the
"castrated" Andre first edition.

All these info would not even fill a quarter page. What would be the purpose of
such a research project ?

My book is out of print since the late 1980ies. It should be in Pierpont Morgan
Library in New York.

Good luck, kindest greetings H.Pizka

[Hornlist] Mozart & Leutgeb

2008-05-06 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello Listers -

I am currently doing a short research project for a music history class. I've
chosen to briefly investigate the relationship between Mozart and Leutgeb. I am
writing to ask if anyone out there know of any good sources for information. I
have "Horn", by Barry Tuckwell, and it has some info. The preface to the K417
Urtext Edition also has some information. Really what I am looking for are any
primary sources or accounts of primary sources. My references must be from
'scholarly' places, so I've looked on JSTOR, RILM, Grove, WorldCat, Google
Scholar, ebscohost and others through my school library. I've found some good
material and some junk and a lot of irrelevant stuff. But does anyone out
there have some quick ideas for information ? Mr. Pizka, does your book "Das
Horn Bei Mozart" have information on Leutgeb ? If so how do I purchase a copy?
I've not been able to find it for sale anywhere, and our library can't get it
through inter-library-loan for at least a month.

Thanks, happy practicing,

Speaking of Chinese made horns, Kit wrote: "A couple of years in the future

I agree. I'm one who's actually optimistic about the future of Chinese
instruments. I'm old enough to remember when "Made in Japan" stamped on a
product meant it was junk. But now "Made in Japan" means top of the line for
many products. I believe the Chinese instrument makers will eventually find
that making better quality products is not only more satisfying, but also more
profitable than making junk.

They used these horns for violent demonstrations, not for playing as you might
assume, they used it to throw them against the authorities. And be aware, even
wearing black gloves instead of white ones will leave no traces on the horns
surface. The producer supplied white gloves as they thought black gloves would
leave traces easier (black & white just thought as colours, - has nothing to do
with people). One has to be aware, that the valve rotors might jump out of
their casings during the most delicate solo by surprise, as there was a
miscalculation during their revolutionary design HP

I agree.

Any state home to Napoleon Dynamite is definitely worth defending.
Especially its cultural contributions to the United States.

[Hornlist] Idaho a cultural vacuum? I don't think so.

2008-04-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
A few months ago, a student attending BYU-I in tiny, obscure Rexburg, Idaho was
searching for a natural horn to play for her senior recital. If I remember
correctly she credited the difficulty of the search possibly to Idaho being a
cultural vaccuum. (Can't remember her exact words, so I hope you catch my
drift.) Well ... I beg to differ. Tuesday evening I had the opportunity to
hear the touring BYU-Idaho Sinfonietta perform the 4th mvt of Mahler's 5th,
Vaugh William's 5 Variant's on the Lazarus theme, a Dvorak string Suite & a few
other pieces I can't recall. It was stunning, flawless, gorgeous. I've never
heard students perform so well; they sounded like pros. It was a very moving
experience. My only disappointment w/ the program was there were NO HORNS! I
was hoping to hear the student who was looking for the organic blaster.

Anyway, if Idaho is a cultural vacuum, the suction is seriously compromised in
Rexburg. Bravo Idaho!

Re: [Hornlist] Looooow F on Vienna Horn?

2008-04-24 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello Mark, sorry I do not find my CDs with all the Mahler parts. Can you scan
the relevant page & send me as an email attachement, please. Pls rush as I will
leave for USA next thursday.

Anyway, I doubt if he used the written low F below low C. It is possible on the
F horn but a very weak note: 123 plus right hand & lips. This would not be of
any effect. as I do not remember much Mahler (I am not a great Mahler fan), the
part would be of great help. But Mahler was in Vienna that time. Stiegler was
there & Romagnoli. It makes no sense to me. And is it important ???

Waiting for your reply.

Greetings
Hans
