So a permit to a generic profile consisting of 39 0's and then a 1like this 01* would allow any size up to 16M. And don't let confusing CP error messages for lack of authorization (like with the VMNODE) hold you back in this. Check diskmap (or a disk mapping tool of your choice) to see if it shows anything at cyl0 on this disk. Now I'm vm 5.2, am following the cookbook again cause we have another physical box with an IFL on and I want to set up a vm with linux images there. I can not do a PUT or LS to my lnxmaint image. I can FTP to it and I did have firewall issues that I got rid of to do that, but those commands just sit there. IF I go to my vm machine lnxmaint, FTP to my laptop, I can do a GET. Therefore I'm thinking my FTPSERVER on VM is not right but I can not seem to find anything in a log that says that. I'm looking for ideas. At first yes there where fire wall denials between my laptop and the vm machine, but by opening up 20 and 21 for the two IP's we no longer see them. I can actually connect to the vm machine and do a cd lnxmaint.192. After that I'm done. An LS or a PUT or an MPUT just sits there. I know it's something stupid but I just can't see it. Folks, Long time ago back when I was vm 5.1, we followed the vm/linux install cookbook from Mike MacIsaac. Is something different between vm 5.1 and vm 5.2 that I missed? THANX in advance Brian W. Remember that active mode FTP creates an additional data connection that may not be using 20 or 21 (the CD will flow over the port 20 control connection, so that should work). VM FTP defaults to active mode FTP, and LS or PUT cause that second data connection to attempt to open. Try a PASV command before you try to do the LS.
Re: Allocation error from dasd
In the directory: $ALLOC$ has MDISK A61 3390 000 001 510W04 R and MAINT has: MDISK 127 3390 END 510W04 MR I was able to cpfmtxa for cyl 0 and was able to attach the pack afterwards. All data in the mini disks is available. I still do not understand why this happened. Thank you all for your support ! ! ! Re: Allocation error from dasd
Look thorough all your directory entries for something like: MDISK vdev 3390 000 cyl_cnt 510W04 MR If you find an MDISK statement that begins on cylinder 000, and it's not one of MAINT's full-pack MDISKS, then you have probably found the error. Aside from full-pack MDISK statements that are used to map the entire physical pack, it's generally not a good practice to allocate MDISKs on cylinder zero. Cylinder zero is special in that (without getting into gory details) some of the first parts of cylinder zero are used to house CP's Allocation Bit Map. Best practices generally dictate that cylinder zero not be allocated for anything but the volser, the Allocation Bit Map, the Stand Alone Program Loader, and other CP-specific functions. In some circumstances you can certainly get away with using cylinder zero for added purposes - but you risk later damage when you forget that it is also being used for CP's own purposes. Setting aside one single cylinder per DASD is not really a waste of resources if doing so keeps one from shooting themselves (and their system) in the foot at a later date. I guess it's time for me to write a requirement to change the default client setup to passive mode. That wouldn't have helped you directly here (since it's a client-side option), but it would be good prophylaxis for the CMS client to behave in a way that would be friendly to the common practice these days. There aren't too many places where active mode FTP is still a good default.

I see there are other FILTER options, but most (c,d,g,n,t, and v) are not explained in the TCP User's guide. I would suggest comparing the VM LPR trace to the VSE LPR trace to see what the difference in filters is, if any. The filters are explained in RFC 1179. Alan Altmark z/VM Development IBM Endicott
