I very much dislike things that mess with my TERM settings for me.
Like the the z/VM installation process to set TERM MORE 0 0 (and issue
VMFCLEAR frequently) that prevent me from reading the error messages.
If I don't have to see it, then don't display it. When I am supposed
to read it, give me time for that. VM Systems Programmers also are a

Well, not really a requirement. More a question of different ways to
achieve the same result.

So I guess you're now doing a very cheap scrolling operator console?

I can see how you have reached your assumption about what I am doing but 2
+ 2 does not always make 5 and I do work on more than 1 thing at a time
;-) In this case it was an existing server, that already trapped msg
wng, that I was monitoring. I (inadvertently) left it logged on overnight
and, of course, at midnight it hung up when the midnight message came out.
As I am now getting quite old and forgetful, I wanted to protect against
making the same mistake again ;-) It really did not matter if the midnight
message was trapped by IUCV (my original question) or if just avoided
putting the terminal in hold but the IUCV trap is the better solution.

Surely Kris must have uploaded a tool that will issue SEND CP to you
around 23:59 to issue a TERM HOLD OFF for 2 minutes ;-)

I am sure I could make it more complicated than that if I think about it
hard enough ;-)

I do not think I feel as strongly about this as you but I do agree that I
do not like processes messing with MY settings in MY userid. However, I
think this is a completely different thing to a defined server/userid with
a defined process setting defined values (CP SET or CP TERM or whatever)
in a way that it allows it process to work in the way it is designed. Of
course, it should be friendly and restore the settings when leaving the
process and returning to the command line (typically after a terminal
break-in).

3494 Tape Library System Question

2009-10-29 Thread Poirier, James
We are currently looking into getting a 3494 Tape Libray System and would
like to be able to share it
  between z/OS and z/VM.

Currently running CA-1 on z/OS and DYNAM/T VM with separate tape catalogs
kept in sync with cross-system communications sharing 3490E 3590 tape
pools.

Can we share common tape ranges in the 3494 TLS between these 2 systems ?
If so how would this be accomplished?

   Thanks in advance,

CMS does not support a CONMODE 3270 terminal. I guess your REXX EXEC to

Change to code to change the COMNODE and the IP into one command

I'm not a real heavy in CMS or z/VM anymore, but the CP TERM CON 3270
concerns me. When CMS is IPL'ed, the console is in 3215 emulation mode. After
the TERM CON 3270, the console is in 3270 mode. And I don't think CMS likes you
to change the terminal mode on the fly.

quote

Some programs reset the console mode internally. For instance, CMS requires a
console mode of 3215 and sets CONMODE to 3215 when it is IPLed. You may not be
aware that the console mode has been changed for you automatically. Problems
result if you then start a program that requires the alternate console mode
setting.

Therefore, you should remain aware of the significance of the console mode any
time that you start a program in your virtual machine.

Re: 回复: Disabled Wait during z/OS gu est mac hine IPL

2009-10-29 Thread Jim Bohnsack
I think that you will find it easier to use a 2nd terminal to dial into
the guest. I have SPECIAL statements in the guest directory entry at
the addresses of the MVS master console and a few TSO 3270 addresses:

SPECIAL 1E00 3270
SPECIAL 1E20 3270

I also use DEDICATE statements to let the guest have the volumes it needs:

DEDICATE 0150 0150
DEDICATE 0151 0151
DEDICATE 0338 0338
DEDICATE 0339 0339

This is from the PROFILE EXEC I use:

do until (abbrev('YES',yn,1) | abbrev('NO',yn,1))
'TELL * IPL 2nd level PROD MVS?'
'TELL * If you enter NO, you can still ipl by entering:'
'TELL * IPL cuu CLEAR STOP LOADPARM '
if rc ^= 0 then do
 yn = 'YES'
 iterate
 end
  pull yn
  end

if abbrev('YES',yn,1)
  then do
SAY 'When you see IPL STOP'
SAY 'enter DIAL MVS xxx on another terminal'
SAY 'where xxx is the master console address'
SAY '...and come back to this screen and enter B'
'CP IPL 0151 CLEAR STOP LOADPARM 015143M1'
   end
else exit

CMS does not support a CONMODE 3270 terminal. I guess your REXX EXEC to
start z/OS contains some TRACE instruction making that it produces output.
Change to code to change the COMNODE and the IP into one command
'CP TERM CONMODE 3270' || '15'x || 'IPL 8B10 CLEAR LOADPARM 10066F'
Or, if you prefer two lines
'CP TERM CONMODE 3270' || '15'x ||,
 'IPL 8B10 CLEAR LOADPARM 10066F'

This is a CMS problem, not a z/OS problem. Are you IPLing from a 3270
terminal, with XAUTOLOG. It is saying that CMS cannot talk to the
terminal. When you IPL CMS, do you have the PARM AUTOCR on it so that CMS
does not prompt for input?

2009-10-29 Thread Romanowski, John (OFT)
Anson,

Try coding your EXEC as Kris indicated and then

ignore the expected DMSCIT171T Permanent console error; re-IPL CMS message.

The '15'x between the TERM command and the IPL command is needed to build and
pass one double command to CP before CMS loads the disabled wait and aborts the
rexx processor as result of CP doing the TERM CONMODE command.

Re: 3494 Tape Library System Question

2009-10-29 Thread Imler, Steven J
This should not be a problem.

Of course there are some setup/configuration issues you need to perform
to implement the 3494 TLS in Dynam/T VM (I suspect for CA-1 on z/OS
too).

There are also some caveats, for example the OWNERID in the DSN
definition indicates what RMS Scratch Category is to be used for the
mount request.

Dang Printer

2009-10-29 Thread Mary Anne Matyaz
Ok, I understand this is old and everyone wants to know why. Try to forget
that and recall
how you defined that IBM 6262 printer 20 years ago. Here's my situation:

CHPID PATH=(CSS(0),EA),PARTITION=((P1),(=),REC),PCHID=1EA,*
  TYPE=CVC
CNTLUNIT CUNUMBR=EA00,PATH=((CSS(0),EA)),UNITADD=((00,001)), *
  SHARED=N,PROTOCL=D,UNIT=4248
IODEVICE ADDRESS=EA0,UNITADD=00,CUNUMBR=(EA00),TIMEOUT=Y, *
  STADET=Y,UNIT=4248

I've tried SET RDEV to 3211 and to impact_printer with no joy. I saw an old
post from John Fransicovich that says you have to have an image library for
an ibm 6262 model 22, tried IMAG4248, still no joy.

The printer won't come online. Depending on the RDEV, I either get unable
to
identify device 0ea0 dynamically or a simple no channel paths is available.

If anyone has such a config, can you look over my iocp definition and let
me know what your set rdevice is?

Thanks!!
Mary Anne

SIGNALLING z/Linux Guest to shutdown

2009-10-29 Thread Martin, Terry R. (CMS/CTR) (CTR)
Hi

I wrote a REXX EXEC to shutdown my z/Linux guests based on some answers
to some prompts. I wrote in the exec to give me the flexibility to
specify one guest at a time to shutdown or ALL guests.

The issue I am having is when I execute the exec on the console for a
guest and while it is running I happen to hit the enter key the exec is
interrupted and the guest is logged off without completing the shutdown
scripts within the Linux guest itself. For systems like Oracle if this
is interrupted and the shutdown scripts do not complete this can cause
some not so pretty things to go wrong with the Oracle disks.

Also if I want to bring them all down at the same time when one
completed and I get into a VM READ if I hit enter that disrupts them
all. I have a copy of the exec but did not want to paste because of its
length and cannot attach here so if have some thoughts and need to look
at the exec let me know where I can email and attach the exec.

Any help would be appreciated Thanks

Thank You,

When the menu is produced on the designated console (which is what the loadparm
does), you can change the name of the module to load, the name of the CONFIG

One quirk - if you do specify cons=addr via the menu, it replaces both the

Re: 回复: 回复: Disabled Wait during z/OS guest mac hi ne IPL

2009-10-29 Thread Schuh, Richard
We have a similar situation with our TPF guests. I issue all CP commands that
will cause a system reset or give CMS grief using DIAG 8 with a command string
that looks something like this SYSTEM RESET#TERM CONMODE 3270#DEFINE STOR
nnG#IVPOPEN parms#MSG * SETUP COMPLETE. The SYSTEM RESET is always the first
command to be executed. It prevents the DMSCIT message and the problem tickets
that the users open when they see them. The SETUP COMPLETE message has a
tendency to prevent the users from jumping the gun by IPLing their systems
before all of the changes have been made.

I found that training the users to ignore the DMSCIT message was a futile
exercise. The same users kept reporting the problem over and over again.

The '15'x between the TERM command and the IPL command is needed to build and

Change to code to change the COMNODE and the IP into one command
'CP TERM CONMODE 3270' || '15'x || 'IPL 8B10 CLEAR LOADPARM 10066F'
Or, if you prefer two lines
'CP TERM CONMODE 3270' || '15'x ||,
 'IPL 8B10 CLEAR LOADPARM 10066F'

I defined the ipl and related command in an exec file as below.

'CP TERM CON 3270'
'I 8B10 CLEAR LOADPARM 10066F'

This is a CMS problem, not a z/OS problem. Are you IPLing from a 3270 terminal,

CMS, do you have the PARM AUTOCR on it so that CMS does not prompt for input?

The request was for a method that does not require the SAPL screen. Kris
was right, there is no such method. Only the filename of SYSTEM CONFIG
can be specified on the LOADPARM without bringing up the SAPL screen. E.g.
LOADPARM FNABC will cause FN=ABC to be added to the SAPL parms, overriding
any burned-in specification.

One quirk - if you do specify cons=addr via the menu, it replaces both
the
OPERATOR and emergency console lists with that single address for the
 duration of that IPL.

That's correct for OPERATOR_CONSOLES, but if it's happening for the
emergency console list, it's a bug. Here's what the book says:

If the CONS=addr or CON=addr parameter was specified on the Stand-Alone
Program Loader (SAPL) panel to specify a console address and this console
address is not already specified on the EMERGENCY_MESSAGE_CONSOLES
statement, it is added to the list of emergency message consoles.

When you specify a console on the LOADPARM, SAPL creates a CONS=addr entry
and the above rule applies.

The ethernet ones tend to use a little more CPU since the ARP processing has

Re: SALIPL - Stand Alone Program Loader

2009-10-29 Thread Schuh, Richard
It happened the last time I used the menu in a virtual machine. However, that
was early in my 5.3 ventures. The loader may even have been at the 5.2 level,
loading a 5.3 system. I will try it when I start testing 6.1 and, if it is
still doing it, I will open an incident.

Regards,
Richard Schuh

That's correct for OPERATOR_CONSOLES, but if it's happening
for the emergency console list, it's a bug. Here's what the
 book says:

If the CONS=addr or CON=addr parameter was specified on the
Stand-Alone Program Loader (SAPL) panel to specify a console
address and this console address is not already specified on
the EMERGENCY_MESSAGE_CONSOLES statement, it is added to the
 list of emergency message consoles.

When you specify a console on the LOADPARM, SAPL creates a
CONS=addr entry and the above rule applies.

I hope not, have no idea what a loadbuf is. :)

We did get output. We switched it 00e, but of course there was already an
000e in the IBMDFLT profile, so had to add
a new profile without an 00e, then att the rdev to the guest as 00e,
$addprt1, change the fcb, and were able to print.
Thanks so much, it's so nice to know everyone is out there that can take a

The IMAG is not important yet, it comes into play only when you want VM

Ok, I understand this is old and everyone wants to know why. Try to
  forget that and recall
how you defined that IBM 6262 printer 20 years ago. Here's my situation:

  CHPID PATH=(CSS(0),EA),PARTITION=((P1),(=),REC),PCHID=1EA,*
  TYPE=CVC
  CNTLUNIT CUNUMBR=EA00,PATH=((CSS(0),EA)),UNITADD=((00,001)), *
  SHARED=N,PROTOCL=D,UNIT=4248
  IODEVICE ADDRESS=EA0,UNITADD=00,CUNUMBR=(EA00),TIMEOUT=Y, *
  STADET=Y,UNIT=4248

I've tried SET RDEV to 3211 and to impact_printer with no joy. I saw an
  old
post from John Fransicovich that says you have to have an image library
  for
an ibm 6262 model 22, tried IMAG4248, still no joy.

The printer won't come online. Depending on the RDEV, I either get unable
  to
identify device 0ea0 dynamically or a simple no channel paths is
  available.

If anyone has such a config, can you look over my iocp definition and let
me know what your set rdevice is?

  Thanks!!

You
know what, I recall a day when IBMLINK ran on 3270 terminals and when you
entered search criteria on a problem you'd ONLY get VALID responses for your OS
and problem (not 3,000,000 keyword hits 99.99% of them having NOTHING to do
with your OS or your problem!).  I recall a day when you would call IBM
Software Support at 1-800-237-5511 (burned into my memory from over 20 years of
calling), immediately connect to KNOWLEDGABLE professionals who could quickly
help you identify if your problem was known/existing or open a new problem
report, and this was all done in clear, easily understood
English!

Now
we have IBMLink 2000, ServiceLink, Passport/Advantage, ShopzSeries, etc. etc.
etc. etc.  Each of which seems to require its own userid/password
combination, and none of which is simple or easy to use!

I
have spent the past TWO HOURS trying to open a software support ticket using
IBM.com, and am now going to GIVE UP and use the phone the old fashioned
way.

  I
sign in to IBMLINK 2000 using my userid and password.
  I
searched for any records associated with my existing problem (TCPIP abending,
  FWIW) - no recent hits.
  I
tried to open a Service Request.  That takes you to a screen where you
have to enter your IBM ID and password, which is not your IBMLINK ID and
  password.
  I
call the IBMLINK Help Desk at 1-800-543-3912 to figure out WHAT IBM ID it is
asking for.  They take my name and phone number and tell me someone will
call you back.  I guess it would be TOO efficient to let me talk to
  someone immediately!
Someone from IBM (IBMLINK Help Desk) calls me back.  We walk
through the exact same process I went through above until I am asked for my
IBM ID again.  He looks it up and tells me what it is.  I enter
THAT id and password only to have the website come back and tell me I'm not
authorized to do anything (even though I am the ONLY registered user on this
account!).  I ask him to fix the account.  He tells me I need to
call the Software Support Help Desk at 1-800-426-7378, options 2-2.

  I
call the Software Support Help Desk using the options provided.  We very
quickly discover this is NOT the right number to call for problems with
Passport/Advantage.  It's the software defect support numbe (e.g. what
formerly was on 800-237-5511).   The IBM'er gives me that phone
  number.
  I
call IBM Passport/Advantage Help Desk at 1-800-978-2246.  I describe my
problem to the IBMer.  He tells me IBM Passport/Advantage does not
provide Help over the phone and that I must go to
www.ibm.com/software/support to
get the problem with my Passport/Advantage account authorizations
straightened
  out.
  I go
  to www.ibm.com/software/support -
this is not a web page to request Passport/Advantage support!  It's yet
another search page!  The only reference to Passport/Advantage on this
page is under Buying and managing support, which is basically a page to
  convince you to buy Passport/Advantage!!!
I
give up!

For
crying out loud IBM, can't you have a SINGLE sign-on for a customer to be able
to access ALL of the services/entitlements that they've paid for?  Why do I
need an IBMLINK id/pw, an IBM (presumably Passport/Advantage - although
that's
NOT what I'm prompted to enter!) id/pw, a ShopzSeries id/pw!  And when
all of these accounts get out of synch, how about ONE support phone number with
ONE knowledgable professional who can RESOLVE the problem FULLY, instead of
bouncing customers around from phone number to phone number, ultimately being
directed to a web page that doesn't exist!  Geez!!!

Sorry
folks, I just had to vent. !!!

On the other hand, if you have Velocity Software's ESAMON friends, or

higher, for that matter - and ignore the HCP401I message. If you had the

It allows you to monitor spool space and set different triggers at

z/LInux, LVM, and minor disasters.

2009-10-29 Thread Paul Raulerson
I had to add some additional DASD to a Linux instance over the
weekend, and for whatever reason, it turned into a disaster.

Linux somehow or another decided to rearrange all the DASD and blew
every single LVM I had on the machine. Just under half a terabyte of
data went into some unrecoverable mode.

I'm pretty careful about this, and just build ~100GB volumes using
3390-9 volumes. The mini-disk definitions are always ordered and new
DASD gets higher, sequential numbering. I always start my minidisk
assignments at 200, so 200 is the IPL disk, 201 is either /usr or
swap, depending. 202 starts the data volumes.

I wound up building a new instance, and installing a slightly updated
version of Linux, then restoring all the data with Tivoli from a VTL.
There was no permanent damage done, except to my ability to sleep at
night.

When I rebuilt the data partitions, I built them as RAID-0 partitions.
(The Shark takes care of the real RAID, and I am not worried about
data loss from that direction.)

Has anyone else ran into this?

-Paul
