Re: My 45th Anniversary at SRU
Congratulations on an amazing career Fran. Fran Hensler wrote: This is cross-posted to VSE-L and IBMVM-L. Today is my 45th anniversary in data processing at Slippery Rock University of PA. On May 6, 1963 I founded the Data Processing Center at the then Slippery Rock State College. The center consisted of one half-time key punch operator and me. My mission was to automate student registration by the fall semester and have class lists in the hands of faculty before the first class meeting. We had an arena style registration for 1996 students in three days. The class lists were produced after working 27 straight hours. We had Series 50 (half speed) IBM punched card tabulating equipment: One 024 keypunch, a 548 interpreter, 082 sorter, 085 collator, 514 reproducing punch and a 402 accounting machine that could print 50 lines per minute. The 402 could only add and subtract. Later we acquired a 604 calculator that could divide and therefore calculate QPA. All of these machines were programmed by wiring plugboards. In 1968 we installed an IBM System/360 Model 30 computer with 32K core memory and 14.5M of 2311 disk storage running DOS/360 Release 17. Now the 7.5 hour job of sorting course cards took 10 minutes! Six model 2260 terminals were purchased in 1972 and I designed an on-line student registration system (using FASTER, a forerunner of CICS) that is still in use today, under the covers, in the RockTalk system whereby students can register via telephone or on the web. For the first on-line registration that fall, all six terminals were setup in the Student Union. It took 3 days to register 5897 students. Students had to punch their programming assignments into cards until 1975 when I implemented IJS (Interactive Job Submission) to allow input and printing via DECwriters at a speed of 110 baud and eventually 300 baud. In 1985 SRU acquired an IBM 4361 computer with 12M main memory. I tailored the VM/SP Operating System Release 3 for student use of WATFIV, WATBOL, Pascal, C, Lisp, SPSS, ADA, Basic, Spitbol and Assist and two years later, Modula-2. The 1990 connection to BITNET brought email and file transfer capabilities with other universities. 1992 saw the acquisition of an IBM 9221-170 computer with 96M of main memory and SRU was finally able to connect to the Internet. Since 2003 VSE and VM are running on an 18-MIPS FLEX-ES system. I have enjoyed being a programmer, systems analyst and most of all a systems programmer. I have been honored by receiving the SRU President's Award for Outstanding Service in 1994 and being inducted into the Order of Knights of VM as "Sir Fran of the Rock" in 2007. I would like to hear from anyone who has had a career with a single employer running more than 45 years. /Fran Hensler at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania USA [EMAIL PROTECTED] +1.724.738.2153 "Yes, Virginia, there is a Slippery Rock" -- Rich Smrcina VM Assist, Inc. Re: VTAM on an IFL?
In the VSE world I know for a fact that one of the TCP/IP stack vendors offers a way to access VTAM applications without VTAM. That stack feature just went GA before the WAVV conference this year. So, any VTAM application could be accessed directly without having VTAM present on the system. The applications think they're talking to VTAM, but they're really talking to the IP stack. McKown, John wrote: The same applies to z/OS, but even worse in that TSO is required to really do anything at least as far as "system maintenance" is required. I don't know about VSE, but in z/OS, even with TCP/IP, it is VTAM which is doing the actual I/O to the IP devices (well, at least with OSA devices). Who designed this? As an "amusement", I've been trying to see how much work I can do using z/OS's UNIX shell instead of TSO. The answer is: "Not really very much." As far as CICS is concerned, I can almost envision a TN3270 server "built in" to CICS. Or perhaps a BMS/IP where BMS supports IP terminals "directly" somehow. Of course, this will not be implemented by IBM without a business case. Is ICCF available via IP? Or is it even necessary? Re: zLinux question
Actually with a hardware error like that, the z/VM messages tell most of the story (I misspoke) and z/VM is your best bet at recovery. It should handle the error condition better than Linux will (assuming you are using minidisks). Fixing your IFCC problem is the quickest route to a cure. Unless there's something in the newer DASD drivers, I don't know of any configurable retry mechanism. But that IFCC issue may cause you some real problems if it isn't corrected. Re: Initial User Directory
No argument here. One of the most disliked chores of installing a new z/VM is changing all of the default passwords. After that initial setup, it isn't hard to replace the passwords for those users that need to logged on. No one ever really needs the password to those accounts if properly LOGONBY authorized. That random password could be randomized daily, until you can properly divide all accounts into the proper AUTOONLY, LBYONLY, NOLOG or personal password categories. At least for ESDS files, the VSAM hooks are already there (I don't know if KSDS would be any different or would really matter). The TCP/IP Tools Transparent FTP support is built that way. When a VSAM ESDS file is opened an FTP open is triggered, the data flows to or from the program through the FTP channels. The VSE development lab won't be of much help there. As far as they're concerned they already have an NFS client as delivered by the Connectivity Systems TCP/IP Stack (which is delivered as a pre-installed, priced feature with every VSE shipment). Re: MAINTENANCE
Anne, That's exactly the approach that I use. Another variation would be to try it on a z/VM in another LPAR, but second level works just as well. Perhaps the key to PUT2PROD is to make sure that you are connected to your OSA ICC or 2074 (if you have either of those). Also, the timing to be able to bounce VM to finish the maintenance cycle is important. Anne D. We are a VERY small shop with only a handful of linux instances. We only have z/vm in order to run linux. Can I put maintenance on with those instances up? Seems like that would not be a good idea (comes to mind the time I did PUT2PROD from my desk, TCP/IP got taken down, and I got zapped!). Re: Using a VSwitch in VM rather than VIPA
It's very possible. I do it all the time. Put a NICDEF in the directory for TCP/IP, and set up the interface. It can be the same as your real OSA interface (device number, IP Address, etc). TCP/IP on VM won't know the difference. And when you get the second card, the failover process will work just fine. That worked great! Thanks Michael and Marcy. Michael Coffin wrote: Hi Rich, When you disconnect the z/VM 5.3 OPERATOR you get the z/VM 5.3 HCPBOX, and then you close the TN3270 emulator, right? If you want to disconnect the virtual machine in which you are running z/VM 5.3 - after you disconnect the OPERATOR and receive the z/VM 5.3 HCPBOX, press PA1 and break to first level CP (verify that you are on first level CP, look at the status area in the bottom right of your TN3270 session) and THERE you type DISC to disconnect. PROFILE EXEC to bring up second level VM
OK, I seem to be having a recall problem... Here is the essence of a PROFILE EXEC that I'm using to bring up z/VM 5.3 under z/VM 5.2: 'CP SET RUN ON' 'CP TERMINAL HOLD OFF' IPLCMD='TERM CONMODE 3270'||'15'X||'IPL C20' 'CP 'IPLCMD It all works fine until I DISC the z/VM 5.3 OPERATOR and close the session. Then z/VM 5.3 stops. When I log back in to the virtual machine it is all good, it picks up right where it left off. The way we install, the starter system “becomes” the production system after the customization. So the concept of a starter system disappears. If you’re installing your starter system second level, there’s no need to allocate a whole, real volume to it for page and spool. It can be just as happy with minidisks of your desired size and will see them with the proper labels and be quite happy. So take one mod 27, and break it into two minidisks, making it both your page and spool. Or smaller, if you’d like. Then eventually, you can do the page and spool configuration the way you’d like. -- .~.Robert P. Your 'after lunch' comment reminds me of a T-shirt I saw on a TV show, "If I don't remember it, it didn't happen!" Mike Walter wrote: Second, try ACCESS 500 A. Then issue the SERVICE command. I'm pretty sure that's what I did when I RSU 5204. But that was "before lunch" a few weeks ago, and anything "before lunch" is forgotten after lunch. :-) -- Rich Smrcina VM Assist, Inc. Re: IPL without OPERATOR on console
There had to be a configuration change between the old machine and the z9. VM won't behave that differently just because of different hardware. Berry van Sleeuwen wrote: Hello List, Last week we have seen an IPL that did not go the way I'd expected. It went OK, so VM is running, but it doesn't feel right. In the past our IPL procedures were: - Connect a terminal session to a console (let's say device 820) - load the LPAR on HMC with loadparm 820. - On the console the SA-IPL appears. - Change parameters if required and press PF10. - On the console user OPERATOR is logged on and some information on IPL i s displayed on the console. - User OPERATOR runs PROP and disconnects. Our new VM runs on a z9 machine. (actually 6 VM's on two machines) The IP L now looks like this: - Connect terminal - load LPAR - console turns to the VM logon screen. No SA-IPL, so also no way to specify a PROMPT or a different PARM disk. N o user OPERATOR to ask for start parameters (WARM, NOAUTOLOG) or to display the IPL steps, such as SPOOL init, and things like that. When closing the console log for operator I can see the lines I would expect to see on the console so it did all those things but it didn't show us that. It only happens on a z9 machine. Our VM's on z890 and z990 machines do show the SA-IPL during IPL. All VM's are z/VM 5.2 and use basically the same system config. So it looks like it has something to do with the machine or its configuration. Has anyone ever seen this? Any ideas as to what the cause would be? Re: TCP/IP VM Documentation
Sergio, You can also get product doc here: http://www.vm.ibm.com/library/ Click on Library Center, Bookshelf or PDF Library for your release. The TCP/IP feature manuals will be there. Re: z/VM usability
Umm... that's Mark Hessling. Paul Raulerson wrote: Well - Linux works now, and can talk to all the CP services. Linux also comes with Rexx (Regina), XEdit (THE Editor from Tim Hessling), and pipes that are roughly equivalent to CMS Pipelines. Named pipes and message queues and such are all available and under Linux and Solaris, very heavily used. The biggest darn problem is that Linux is not very efficient compared to CMS (or mvs, z/.OS, OS/390, etc.) which was written with the IBM arch. in mind, and probably in assembler to boot. Linux is quite capable and fast on a zSeries machine, but not as fast as or anywhere near as efficient as CMS. Music is pretty good I suppose. -Paul -- Rich Smrcina VM Assist, Inc. Re: Best procedure to migrate dedicated VSE volume to VM minidisk
Yes, but unfortunately DEVNO causes the MDISK to bypass Minidisk Cache... :( Went down the same road, same sad results... Jim Bohnsack wrote: Tim--VM would be quite happy with a full volume, 3339 cyl. mdisk that the guest would get. Now that does leave you with the exposure of the VSE guest "owning" cyl 0, including the label. If you change the label, VM won't know about the different label until you change the MDISK statement in the directory. There is an option on the MDISK statement that allows you to define a MDISK at a real address rather that by volid: MDisk /vdev devtype /DEVNO /rdev / The message you are seeing is normal. Re: CPs and zVM
As long as the LPAR has access to the 2 CPs VM will. The IND command will confirm it. Antonio C Prado wrote: People, I am running zVM 4.3 and 5 VSE/ESA 2.6.1 in a z9 BC with 2 CPs. Perhaps part of the service procedure in the program directory will help: http://www.vm.ibm.com/progdir/4osasf42.pdf Huegel, Thomas wrote: This may be a lot easier than I thought. I think each minidisk was separately DDRed. If not: then you need to restore a whole VM and you use the directory you just showed to extract the minidisks you want and DDR them from the new packs onto minidisks of your current VM. e.g. (after the restore to get MDISK 2C2 3390 3334 004 430W01 ) LINK 2VMVMV20 2C2 222 M (current VM) ATTACH restored_430W01 * 111 DDR SYS CONS#IN 111 DASD#OUT 222 DASD COPY 3334 3337 reorder 0 And, you need more than OSASF 200 and 400: the 2VMVMV20 user contains the real SW. As for the link error: in the past, OSA/SF installed a stupid PROFILE EXEC that tries to link to non-standard minidisk addresses. No need to a MAINT 19A for example.
