Hi all,

It's been 7 years in the making, or tearing down. We shutdown our
mainframe December 31. We ran VM for an incredible 38.5 years and it was
a blast, especially at SHARE and the various incarnations of this group!

Gerry Dube has retired (mostly), though not before helping all Maine K-12
schools and libraries be very well connected to the internet.
Kerry Anderson leads our e-mail, ID management, DNS and several other
areas, and of course has built world-class tools to integrate and manage
the systems.
My hats include Listserv postmaster, Oracle DBA, and backup and recovery.
We're just now implementing a new D2D2D system (Quantum NetBackup).
Our administrative systems have moved to PeopleSoft on Sun Solaris SPARC
machines, with nearly all of the rest of our shop on Linux Intel machines.
In an odd twist (of cruelty), we've retrained one of our mainframe
operators to handle our Windows systems work. ;-)

Happy New Year to all!

Cheers, Wayne

If you use (or plan to use) DIRMAINT, then you probably should set up
DIRMAINT and DATAMOVE first. The Director one you can probably ignore
(other than to NOLOG it if you know you won’t use it).

It looks like you tried to share that disk R/W between two CMS virtual
machines. Don't.

z/VM allows two virtual machines to have simultaneous R/W access. But
for that capability to be effective, both of the guest operating
systems must know about each other having the R/W link and have the
ability to coordinate writing. CMS does not have such capability.

If two CMS virtual machines share a disk R/W, it is VERY likely that
the disk will become corrupt. If you corrupted only one file, then
you are VERY VERY fortunate.

When a CMS minidisk has become corrupt, results are quite
unpredictable. Simple operations like reading a file can cause CMS to
crash. And there is no 'fsck' for a CMS disk to check and fix errors.
The only safe way to handle a CMS disk which has been trashed is to
copy each file, one by one (because reading any single file could
crash CMS), to another disk or to SFS.

When used with just one R/W link at a time, the CMS filesystem is
extremely reliable, and the rest of the system depends on this
reliability. When there are multiple R/W links to a CMS minidisk, the
damage can be far reaching and hard to identify.

Sharing CMS minidisks read-only is common practice and highly effective.

If you need to share a file space in CMS, use SFS.

I think the 15 seconds comes from the CMS server side. CMS servers come
up much faster than a full operating system (such as Linux).

I don't have much delay between each Linux startup, however, I do start
the production servers such as NFS first, then delay 5 minutes (sometimes
a file system check is forced), then startup the normal production
servers, wait 15 minutes, and then start the test servers.

Plan on the worse case of each server needing to do a file system check.

The difference is that the pages in XSTORE have been paged out to the high
speed paging device. VM utilizes XSTORE for that purpose and for DC (if
you allow it). The pages cannot be referenced while paged out; they have
to be paged in before you can access them. You should treat XSTORE just
like you treat DASD paging devices, not like it is the same as main
memory.

there is no difference between storage and xstorage.

The best solution for your problem is to couple the two systems with CSE,
so that they?ll know what the other is doing.

Before we implemented CSE, we created a service we called Janus, which we
ran in the profile of each Linux server during the CMS startup. The
purpose was to look up which system the Linux guest was last started from,
and to report a mismatch if there was a console, or log out immediately if
the image was autologged.

We still run Janus as a double check on things. If you?d like the code, I
can package it for you and explain what it is trying to do.

Is it bad to make one zlinux running on 2 z/vm?

2009-07-24 Thread sunny . hu
We sometimes accidently turn on one linux guest on two z/VM systems.
Both z/VM system has their own DIRMAINT and RACF. No RSCS.
We add the same guest direct file to two z/VM so it makes the flexibility
to boot.

Is it bad to make one zlinux running on 2 z/vm?
So far we didn't get any complaint. But I can't expain myself how. It has
same ip address and the same dasds.

I set up dual Registration on racf because we have dirmaint.
According to Racf Program Directory 6.19 : I change CONFIGRC SAMPDVH AT
41f TO 5VMDIR40 11F AS CONFIGRC DATADVH.
So on 5VMDIR40 11f there are two files: CONFIG DATADVH and CONFIGRC
DATADVH

My question is that should I change CONFIGFIGRC DATADVH to CONFIG DATADVH
and delete the original CONFIG?

Re: Why my Dirmaint is unstable?

Sunny,

Look at line 4 in your DIRMAINT DATADVH file on 1DF. It looks like a timer
event is kicked off and is failing.

Also insure there is no OFFLINE CONTOL member on the 1DF. If there is,
your DIRM ONLINE is not working. You must be authorized in AUTHFOR
CONTROL.

Re: the errors after turn on RACF

Sunny,

Looks like you ran the DIRM USER command to get the copy of the directory
that was passed to RPIDIRCT to create the RACF commands. However, it does
not look like you ran the RPIBLDDS to actually update the RACF database
since you indicated running VMFVIEW SERVICE. Can you confirm you actually
ran the RACF commands?
z/VM includes a set of CP directory control statements that are used to
define OpenExtensions information to z/VM. You can use the OVM option of
the RPIDIRCT EXEC to process only the OpenExtensions information in the CP
directory, as follows:

RPIDIRCT filename filetype filemode outmode (OVM

When you are satisfied with the output from RPIDIRCT, invoke RPIBLDDS as
follows:

RPIBLDDS filename

where filename is the name of the SYSUT1 file created by RPIDIRCT.
From the RPIDIRCT SYSUT1 file, can you cut/paste the commands related to
MAINT.CF1. They should be similar to RDEF/RDEFINE VMMDISK MAINT.CF1.

Issuing the RACF command RLIST VMMDISK * should show all entries in the
class. Can you provide all or some of the output?

Re: How can I make my TCPIP run?

2009-05-01 Thread sunny . hu
It is running Now! I spent two weeks troubleshooting. :)
I think IPWZARD help me create those TCPIP stack lines?

Before system.dtcparms is

.* SYSTEM DTCPARMS created by DTCIPWIZ EXEC on 28 Apr 2009
.* Configuration program run by MAINT at 09:44:03
 .**

:class.stack
:attach.0600 AS 0001,0601 AS 0002,0602 AS 0003
 :NICK.DTCVSW1 :TYPE.SERVER
:CLASS.STACK
 :NICK.DTCVSW2 :TYPE.SERVER
:CLASS.STACK
 * * * End of File * * *

Now I delete nick TCPIP
 .**
.* SYSTEM DTCPARMS created by DTCIPWIZ EXEC on 28 Apr 2009
.* Configuration program run by MAINT at 09:44:03
 .**
 :NICK.DTCVSW1 :TYPE.SERVER
:CLASS.STACK
 :NICK.DTCVSW2 :TYPE.SERVER
:CLASS.STACK
 * * * End of File * * *

Now TCPIP runs.

Could you tell me what is the best place to put VSWITCH Grant command?
Some document said is system config ? TCPIP configuration file?
Which one is the better and simple way if lots of Linux guests run on it?

Thanks!

Re: How can I make my TCPIP run?

Sunny,

The following message indicates that you are using virtual devices for
your NIC (typical, and correct):
15:50:20 NIC 0600 is created; devices 0600-0602 defined:

They are probably in the CP directory entry for TCPIP.

The following messages indicate that you are trying to deal with real
device addresses for the NIC, too. That's not recommended in z/VM:
HCPCPS040E Device 0600 does not exist
DTCRUN1001E CP VARY ON 0600 failed with return code 40

That's the reason the previous post mentioned your DTCPARMS file. Remove
the NIC 600-602 statements for that, unless that's your OSA address. If
you are using 600-602 for OSA and NIC, just change references for the
virtual NIC addresses in the CP directory for TCPIP, and the files on
TCPMAINT 198.

Turn the Dirmaint on. It works well at first.

My first guess would be that you enabled DIRMAINT by hand using the SET
PRODUCT comamnd. That does not survive a system shutdown and re-ipl.
Update the SYSTEM CONFIG file to enable DIRAMINT each time the system
starts up.

Thanks David Wakser and Dave Jones.
My Dirmain starts to run again! :)

I rememberd last time I did use cf2 ipl VM
does that mean: If I try shutdown reip command, the system will still use
cf2 instead of cf1 ?

What is the recently VM 5.4 service level?

2009-04-15 Thread sunny . hu
Thanks for your help. Finally I upgrade VM5.4 to service 901.
It is my first time so a big step for me. And I am happy now :)

Here is the steps what I did.

go to IBM ShopzSeries.
click My Orders/Create new order
Choose z/VM-Service RSU recomanded Service
The most important step is Report installed software. I didn't do it at
first time. Lots of trouble.
Follow the Tip
Then download all the envelops.

Then I have no problem follow the instructions to upgrade.

In order to veryfy how successful I am, I use q cplevel; and service all
status

I did another test too. But confused:

After saw the becautiful 901, I create the installed software report
again.
Upload to zSeries. Believe it should give me nothing to download at this
time.
But I still get the same two packages as the last time.
Does someone know about what is wrong?

A Question about the VM Page and RES volumes

2009-03-31 Thread sunny . hu
I plan to install z/VM5.4. We has 3390 model 3; mod 9 and mod 27. And we
use Z10.
My question is which one is better for VM CP module and paging space?
VM5.4 CP palnning and Administration said 3390 model 9 is not recommended
for CP system areas and does not support track---on Allocating Dasd
Space
And another book said 3390-3 are preferred for page.

So does that mean model 3 is the best solution? What about mod 9 if we has
PAV?
Can we use mod27? Any problems?

Thanks
