RE: [IceHorses] Trace clipping a weanling - and missed photo op.
I'm so glad Kola is ok, it's so scary to see a horse hurt, especially a baby! That's great that she is a brave girl and trusts her human mom! Cherie I was shaking like a leaf when I saw it - I'm still surprised it turned out to be so minor. Cary walked the pasture to see what had caused it. He found it. We have a few trees in that pasture, and trees will drop dead limbs all along. He found a stick near a tree with a bloody tip and blood beside it, and a blood trail leading from it. We suppose that she stepped on the end of the stick, and the other end popped up and gouged her leg - it's the right length for that. The second, lower puncture is probably where it bounced, since it's not as deep. We try our best to have the safest fence we can. We don't leave halters on the horses when they are unattended. We think about what obstacles we leave in the pasture - we never park the trailer in the pasture, and we'd never think of leaving any farm equipment in there. I'm ready to cut the little trees down, but Cary says he can be more careful, and prune them more often, and we'll both watch for long sticks. I like for the horses to be exposed to natural stuff, but I once heard of a similar incident with a stick...only the horse was gouged in the belly, damaging internal organs and he died. That was a local horse, so I know the story is true. Kola was LUCKY. To be so big and strong, horses are also extremely fragile in many ways. RE: [IceHorses] Snow Ploughing
I went out to open gates for Kevin so he could plough out the riding ring. We intend to work with Dagur again tomorrow. Looks like Gusti has it figured out so he can do it alone next time. :) Man, I can't imagine having that much snow for extended periods. We've had snow on the ground as long as a week a few times in my life. It's not uncommon for us to have snow accumulation here that lasts for 2-3 days. ONCE, I can remember having a snow/ice storm that was so bad, followed by VERY cold weather that we had accumulation (about 18) that lasted over three weeks. This year, our one (so far - we could still get more...) snow, about 3-4 started melting the afternoon after it fell in the morning, but there were a few snow patches left for about 36 hours. Pray for Cary if he ever has to live with me with so much cold and snow/ice. I get cabin fever in our winters - I don't think I'd make it through your kind of weather. [IceHorses] Longer seat - Sensation
I'm considering buying another Sensation because my daughter uses mine all the time and I'm wondering about the longer seat option that I've read others comment about. I love my Sensation Dressage, but when I first start posting I find my thighs bump my pommel and annoy me--then after a while I don't notice it, so either I get used to it or I change my movement to accommodate it. My riding coach hasn't pointed out that my seat is wrong so I'm not sure what I'm doing. Anyways--would the longer seat change that for me? My Trail model pommel didn't get in my way but I prefer the Dressage model. What about the Hybrid--would the bigger pommel get in the way for posting? Thanks for any comments. Virginia
Re: [IceHorses] Snow Ploughing
Man, I can't imagine having that much snow for extended periods. But you see this isn't a normal winter. We normally have about 1/3 of this snow and trained Peppy quite nicely to pull a sleigh. This snow is just too much. Too deep to ride in the bushes (you fall off the deer trails), and it's too deep for our little old tractor to make a good trail for the sleigh for Gustiso we waitand wait. I really like snow and all the activities we do out in it, I'm just not used to this much snow. And actually right now, I have a case of cabin fever myself Wanda

Why would Gat mix it up? And why on other days would there be more fox trot than clean trot. And, does it really matter if Gat mixes the two? I don't knowprobably the same reason Dagur is mixing it up. Muscles learning to do new things... In Dagur's case it will take some time to 'set' a gait. They need to be in shape and supple or at least that's my idea. I'll probably learn more as we progress with Dagur. Wanda
RE: [IceHorses] Longer seat - Sensation
Anyways--would the longer seat change that for me? My Trail model pommel didn't get in my way but I prefer the Dressage model. What about the Hybrid--would the bigger pommel get in the way for posting? I need to get Falki out and put the Sensation Hybrid on him and go trot for a while. He has the easiest to get true-trot of my horses, whereas the others tend to be easy, non-suspended trots. (He also foxtrots and jogs.) My impression is, however, that I can do anything in the Hybrid that I can do with the dressage saddle. I'm heavier than you by 10-20 pounds I think. My dressage has the standard (small) seat and the Hybrid has the extended seat. To me, they sit about the same, except that the Hybrid has the bigger seat. Of course, I've never met a Sensation that I didn't like either. It's raining today so it won't happen today. Ideally, you should post as subtly as possibly, with your butt leaving the seat no longer than necessary, so we should be able to post in even a properly sized western saddle. FWIW, my tiny friend has ridden in all my Sensations, and she says she doesn't feel lost in the extended seat Hybrid. Honestly, I can't see that you lose anything with the Hybrid...but I haven't posted the trot THAT much in one either. If you wanted to show in a dressage show, I think the Hybrid wouldn't be allowed, where the dressage model would be. Karen Thomas, NC -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Do your horses seem to like the deeper snow? V I dunno...I think they're getting sick of it too. Kevin has ploughed some paths around their feeding area for them, and they use them faithfully now. I notice they rarely go out foraging anymore...the snow is just too deep. Today, after we're done working with Dagur and Gusti, perhaps I'll leave the riding arena open for them so they can wrestle and play with some good footing. Wanda
RE: [IceHorses] Cysco Gait Video / Gat Trot
In Dagur's case it will take some time to 'set' a gait. They need to be in shape and supple or at least that's my idea. I'll probably learn more as we progress with Dagur. I suspect that's sort of a different case though, but I could be wrong. Dagur is still a baby, just learning to balance himself with a rider up. Up until now he's been able to do any gait he felt like, whenever he felt like it. Gat is mature though, and has had a rider for a while. I'd bet she's in decent shape - as good as most horses are in the winter anyway. While strength and balance are big issues, another big issue is the conformation and wiring of the individual...and from what Virginia has said, I'd bet she's a good bit pacier than Dagur. For what it's worth, Sina CAN trot, but she also has a good bit of pace in her nature/conformation. I wouldn't describe her as pacey though, since I see her trot/foxtrot at liberty a good bit, as well as do all the other gaits. She seems to find it very easy to foxtrot under saddle. So, I mostly encourage her to do her saddle rack (which at times borders on step pace) alternating with her foxtrot. Both are very comfortable to me, and we walk a lot and canter some too. I think we alternate which muscles she uses, and how she uses them enough to keep her back strong. Walk and canter are always good gaits for back health. One of our next gait projects is to hone her running walk. She has that too. Karen Thomas, NC -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. [IceHorses] rating the canter
I love jaspars canter, so easy going and pleasant, and since he is pacey I like to bump him into that easy canter when others start racking etc. But I dont like it when he gets going too fast and when I haul on his mouth it makes him aggravated. How do you get them to only go slow at a canter? a QH friend yesterday said to try turning him with one rein when he goes too fast so he will learn he has to work when he goes over a certain speed, or to try wiggling the reins. I tried that but he is so used to reins flopping I dont think he noticed :) And the one rein thing has been taught to him as an emergency brake so I am a little leery of whooping a one rein styop on him in anything less than an emergency because I dont want to extinguish that... (i'm not that certain i'd be able to stop him with a bit, even, but i could try. we review the one-rein stop about once a month, starting at a walk and proceeding to the other gaits, in the ring; we do it at about the same frequency on the trail for practice.) --vicka

However, it looks like she isn't having too much trouble doing her little mixed broken trot/foxtrot/trot thing, No--Gat doesn't seem to be having any trouble. And Alex doesn't complain, except about the pace when it mixes in with the canter. and honestly, I doubt many people, besides us gait purists would ever notice, or care. The riding coach will often ask Alex to slow down the trot because Gat just trots on past everyone, so Alex will slow down her posting and Gat slows down for a bit then she gets faster and gets into this steady ground covering groove of hers like she's going somewhere even if it's just around the arena. Much more important to me is that they look like a happy pair, they are able to do their job and both look focused, but relaxed. [IceHorses] PNH games
I've just started Level 1 about a month ago and haven't been able to put a lot of time into it because I have to work around the arena schedule which means Sat Sun evenings are usually free for me, other than that my games have been limited to Friendly while handling. Both horses are fine with the Friendly game with the Carrot Stick although they both seem to be holding still like they're waiting for something to happen. Gat is always like that with or without the CS and always has been since we've had her--I'm wondering if that's her nature to always be so cautious. I've gone through all 7 games with both Gat and Orri--not perfectly but we've done them. Gat is easier to work with and seems to understand everything although both horses seem to think I want to lunge them when I yo-yo them out, and Orri doesn't want to yo-yo back in. Gat will pick up all her feet from one side, no problem. Orri won't pick up any foot--it's like we're back to square one with that. Both are figuring out to lower their heads from my hand at their poll. All in all I can't complain -- it's slow coming along because I don't have a place to play with them but once the weather gets better I'm hoping to be able to use the outside arena if it's not boggy or else go in the pasture or side yard when the arena is used. I know a horse is a horse, but would the personality of the Icelandic respond differently to PNH? V

RE: [IceHorses] another sensation saddle review
Hi Janice Here are pics and it APPEARS to be that there was uneven pressure. Not enough to cause soring. But are pressure marks the same in a treeless saddle? By pressure marks I mean dry spots. This is always a question I ask myself. Like lots of things I think that opposites can be true. It can be wet where there is pressure - like in the photo on the sides where the girth makes contact and the side of the saddle but it is dry in a large area under where you are sitting. There is also meant to be dry areas along the spine - where there should be no pressure - which is what it shows here I think. If the large dry area were indicating enough pressure to close off the sweat glands it would certainly not be very many pounds per square inch?? As opposed to when you have small dry areas that then turn into white marks because of a great deal of pressure in a small area. I have talked to people who do pack trips and they have told me they look for wet spots as indicating pressure because they have to tighten the packs down quite a bit. So maybe like lots of things, there is more than one right answer and it depends The horse will give you answer in the long run... also you can check his back for soreness by checking him before your ride and then after. It's hard to see on a dark horse, especially with You Tube resolution, but my guess was foxtrot? Does that seem likely to you? Karen Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED]
RE: [IceHorses] Cysco Gait Video / Gat Trot
If the foxtrot is easier, is that because of her build or habit? It can be from either one, but I'm thinking her build is most of it. I do NOT claim to be able to do a conformation analysis with still pictures or video though! The riding coach will often ask Alex to slow down the trot because Gat just trots on past everyone, so Alex will slow down her posting and Gat slows down for a bit then she gets faster and gets into this steady ground covering groove of hers like she's going somewhere even if it's just around the arena. I guess that could be from a couple of things. I think it was Janice who recently pointed out that horses can rush when they are uncomfortable, physically or emotionally, maybe trying to keep their balance. Or it could be that if she were trained initially by the Icelandic way she was taught, speed, speed and more speed from the start, so it could be her default way of trying hard. Or, maybe it's even just her nature - I don't think that's the case very often, but I wouldn't rule it out. If they are basically happy and relaxed, I wouldn't worry too much - either it is what it is, or it will get better. Worrying too much might make it worse if tension is any part of the cause. Re: [IceHorses] Malin / Barefoot / Legs
but if you ride many miles per week, or have terrain that is not good for barefoot, it is more kind to the horse to use shoes or boots (the Simple Boot is supposedly liked by many). yes, know a quest, how do you now the size I mean? here in Iceland of course you can´t buy it but I think my Husbands sisters horse would really need it ,Smidur has very bad hoofs so they can´t shoe him good and therefore they do not really ride it, not their kid´s either and it´s a young horse only 7 and and really nice riding horse (to fat!) some help Her would be good, He´s out 24/7 on different terrainn and it doesn´t matter (pinto white hoof´s) On the topic of legs, where would the score reflect the movement of the legs (i.e. rope walking, winging in, etc.)? 7,5 straightness of leg ,your run with your horse back and forth on a stright line. They don´t look at it under rider as I been aware of any of the time that I have been showing. Re: [IceHorses] Ask Janice: Turquoise for Lucy-Runa
I've had hoola hoops in my obstacle area for at least a couple of years now. They are great for controlling the horse's feet, one by one. We roll them away from the horses, and ask the horses to chase them to build confidence in oddly moving things. Gusti loves playing soccer!! I was going to drag the ball out the other day and have a game with him, but I discovered that the ball must be frozen under the overturned water tank that's out in the riding arena... Are you sick of me whining yet? Wanda
RE: [IceHorses] Show Video/Karen
Malin, you may think it funny, but I have a SERIOUS problem with a horse who is front legs are interfering being used as a breeding horse. That's enough right there. There's simply no way I would breed a horse with legs like that. Karen Thomas, NC yes of course it´s is a problem when it is a problem but as I recall Dagur have never had interfering problems and have never seen him have problem on competion´s. And it´s good that you stay at your curs with breeding it´s to many that are running after the next popular stallion. And also as we don´t have this strong rules for breeding in Iceland as in Sweden for an example where a stallion (swedish halfbood /TB) with serious fault in building would never be allowed in registered breeding. Re: [IceHorses] Longer seat - Sensation
What is the extended seat for? big booties! ha! baby got back! raven ;]
Re: [IceHorses] Longer seat - Sensation
Is the whole saddle made bigger? Nope, just the seat. The length of the saddle remains 20 inches. I got a custom hybrid and had my seat made 1 inch longer because I had heard from this list that the seat in the dressage felt a bit smaller than the trail and I have a big butt! I just love the saddle. ann

RE: [IceHorses] another sensation saddle review
So anyway. I think it did ok! Maybe the medi-cheval pad helped? I decided to try it and if he started walking funny (he walks to the side when in saddle pain) or refusing to move out (another way he shows pain) then I would get off immediately, but he never did that. I watch the wet/dry places with my saddles, but I've never really trusted them to fully tell the story. I don't see anything in those sweat marks that would worry me. Were his withers clear? And there was no soreness? Just go slowly, watching for signs of problems, because sometimes they can be ok for a couple of rides, before a problem starts. But, I'd say, so far, so good. That Medi-cheval pad is the one I bought from Ann Cassidy, the one she'd been using for Mr. T(ivar). She had Medi-Cheval inserts, plus some Dave Genadek shims in it. I think that pad, with that padding was great for Tivar, and maybe it will work for Jaspar - I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! You need to be sure that the owner of the Half-Haf-Draf learns about treeless saddles. How tall is he compared to Tiv? Karen Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: [IceHorses] Height versus size of a horse/Iceland
I've also seen a lot of pics from Iceland, and I would say that they could be measuring them differently as they seem small compared to the size of the riders - either that or Icelanders are giants compared to us! Oh I think most of the woman around me are 170-175 cm and men aeound 180-190 most teenagers boys I work with in school is a lot taller than me 167 cm /Malin ps, Oh remembered that I meet Monty Robert when he was here ,He was Tiny!
Re: [IceHorses] Show Video/Dagur/Janice
Rope walking is an built fault up in the shoulders elbows as I understand it my foal Myrkvi was (lost him in an accident is my stable 2 weeks ago) ropewalking and has i take my farrier out now and then to prevent any abnormaltie´s in hoof´s and leg angels in the foals I ask him if he could fix it and he said me -no this is built fault further up shoulders elwbow´s and can´t be fixed with farrier work. Regards Malin I am sorry about your foal Myrkvi!! and it sounds like you really care about your horses to try and help them Malin! Janice-- yipie tie yie yo

I've seen lots of imports and lots of domestic's and I'd say that 13.1-13.2H is about average. The horses certainly don't get smaller the instant they hit USA air space. yes we can agree on that they don´t shrink, but then how do we measure different? Regards Malin www.kolugil.tk

yes we can agree on that they don´t shrink, but then how do we measure different? I learned to measure at the highest point near whithers( not at the rear end) when the horses head is down. I put them on an even surface, give them some treats in a bowl and measure. What do others do? My 5 Icelandics are 12,12.2, 12.3 (still growing) and 13.05. MY friend Ferne has a measuring stick that has a level so it is accurate. Glefsa who is 12 hands even is small but the others do not seem so. Ann Bodega, CA
