2012-10-07 Thread Alok Sinha
Raspberry pi - can be purchased off Amazon.com

However, while you do that - AND I KNOW THIS IS NOT ANDROID forums - you
may want to try, Android PC - $50-$80 with Wifi, HDMI (or vga) output, usb
port... this takes about 4W power. and has 1.5Ghz dual core CPU + MALI GPU.

I have heard, people have ported linux on this - ubuntu, bu the android
works pretty much off the shelf.

You can buy this off, Dealextreme (dx.com) or ebay.in.

This IMHO would be your best/closest bet.

RE: [ilugd] Suggestion needed for settingup network

2004-06-09 Thread Alok Sinha
Amit,

I did not mean the solution part outside the list, i only meant his contact
details.

As far as scanning the content before reaching the PC goes, one would like
to understand in bit more depth as to what Puneet has in mind - however,
given the other environment considerations, one would assume that he needs
to have content filtering in
a. Web download (dansguardian)
b. Mail download (clamd)
c. General irrelevant traffic stoppage. (firewall - shorewall)
d. If he would like to dig deeper, he may want to have a look at the
traffic and what kind of packets are going around. (ntop)
e. In order to protect his network from intruding eyes, he may want to go
for a networl intrusion detection system - which will scan his network
(conditions apply) and give reports on type of attempts (snort)
f. For unwanted mail, he would need anti-spam (spamassassin)
g. For simple access to the net he could use caching proxy along with
appropriate access control mechanisms (squid + squidguard)
h. For his own users, he may want to set up pop3, web, imap, wap frontend
(cyrus, uw-imap) etc.
i. He may want to setup an inbound filter for filtering unwanted messages
(procmail and/or spamassassin)

My point is and was, there are umpteen solutions in the linux space, and one
would need to understnad the exact requirement, propose a suitable solution
and see how the integrated solution is supported and worked upon.

Trust the above clarifies your thoughts/queries.

alok sinha

Hi all,

Due to current virus problems, I am planning to setup a network at my place
where this effect can be minimized. planning to put some sort of proxy. any
idea how to set something like this. I have 20 systems (all windows 2k and
XP), 1 Dlink 24 port switch and a DSL router.

my goals are:

1. All the internet traffic should be scanned before it comes to pc.
2. Some sites should be blocked.
3. A good antivirus is needed to scan all the traffic
(can you suggest one! my budget stands to be 2/- with licenses)

In general it should be a small business solution, where we have some
restrictions.

apart from this i am also looking for some sort of free mail server
solution, where i don't need send my internal mails via external internet
and can be sent
and received to respective PCs within my internal network. Probably as a
commertial alternative Microsoft exchange does this job, but is there any
alternative available as freeware? Probably some linux solution can make
this possible.

please share your views, what can be done in the above case.

regards,
Puneet

Re: [ilugd] Fedora Core & External modem

2004-01-24 Thread Alok Sinha
Or try
wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
This should recognise the modem and make changes as well.

External modems (Std AT compatible) should not be a problem for any OS,
since they work without the need of the driver.

You can test the modem first, by using a software called minicom and
ensuring that the modem responds to AT as OK.

Which program you are using to "start" modem?
wvdial should be the easiest option. Just give appropriate

Caution...I really have not looked at Fedora from this angle as I do not
have modem but should work.

Re: [ilugd] Firewall implimentation

2004-01-23 Thread Alok Sinha
The best form of iptables implementation (IMHO) is through shorewall.

Shorewall provides an abstract layer for IPTABLES, gives a professional
look and feel.

Moreover configuring shorewall is real simple when you use the webmin
module of shorewall.

You will get started with few minutes, without having to even know one
line of iptables.

Gurpreet Singh Sachdeva wrote:

Hi Dheerendar,

  How are you doing??
For configuring a firewall in Linux Machine, "iptables" is the best
option. Iptables restrict the flow of incoming and outgoing packets on
the base of policies you make. The policies are considered from top to
bottom.
For making policies using iptables, man iptables is the best resource
but you can also refer to http://www.faqs.org/docs/iptables/
Please don't forget to issue iptables-save command in the end and
restarting the iptables daemon.
Do let me know if you face any problem in doing that.

Send me your CV and I can forward it to some companies - however, those
I know work on LAMP (linux, apache, Mysql, php-perl-python), not on C++,
so send you CV if your intrests match the above.

Re: [ilugd] Mentor Required

2004-01-19 Thread Alok Sinha
For UML - you can download adios - a live cd distribution which allows
you to run multiple linuxes at the same time - *without* installing on
your hard disk.
Adios is real cool for just being the live linux. try out the UML, which
is the icing on the cake - works without efforts, with almost no
configuration requirements.

You can use UML (User Mode Linux) for creating multiple virtual Linux
hosts within a single machine for testing purposes. It's also a neat
way of having privilege separation between multiple users -- give each
an independent Linux machine.

Re: [ilugd] Can't access internet through proxy server

2004-01-18 Thread Alok Sinha
You need to be more explicit about the error you are getting... but in
the cases that you have recommended

The most likely scenarios are
1. The proxy server is doing a IP (or MAC) based authentication. But
then you should be getting an ACCESS DENIED PAGE.
2. The proxy could be using transparent caching.. but based on IP Access.
3. Check by telnetting into the proxy server port 3128 and type
get www.google.com http/1.1

if you get no output, you will know you are not reaching proxy, else you
should get some response from the proxy... which would tell you what is
not correct.

possible? Maybe the administrators saved authentication information
in windows and my prof doesn't know about it. How can I figure that

Just firing up windoz get the systems online. I tried to intall
mozilla browser for windows and it also works with the proxy
settings. Read somewhere on the net that some microsoft proxy servers
use propreitory protocols. Anyone has any ideas what this is?

I exported http_proxy=http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:3128/ and other vars but
I guess the system is not being able to authenticate at all. I can
only ping the gateway. Also set the local network access to work
without proxy as set in IE browser. Still no use.

Maybe the browsers use NTLM
authentication(http://davenport.sourceforge.net/ntlm.html) also called
"password-less" auth by some. Last I heard, Firebird supports NTLM.

You could also try a simple

cat /dev/(your disk device) > /tmp/some_file_name.img

This creates a file some_file_name.img file in /tmp which is an image of the

You do not require to have a real ip address from the cable ISP - u can do this

Re: [ilugd] delete files log

2003-09-03 Thread Alok Sinha
If the file deleted is not a user data file and is an application
related file, the same can be found out by verifying the rpm package.

If you give the following command

[nb config]# rpm --verify bind
S.5. c /etc/rndc.key
missing d /usr/share/doc/bind-9.2.1/rfc/rfc3110.txt.gz

_ the above command shows, that the file
/usr/share/doc/bind-9.2.1/rfc/rfc3110.txt.gz is missing.

If you need to know all the files missing in your system
[nb config]# for i in `rpm -qa` ; do echo $i; rpm --verify $i; done
The above will list all the files that are missing, modified or changed
on your system, since they were installed on you system.

The above command will not work for the applications installed by
compiling directly on the system. (non-rpm based installations)

Re: [ilugd] Client Machine's IP in PHP

2003-08-23 Thread Alok Sinha
Ritesh,

This one liner code in php will give the ip address

But be careful, the returned ip address may be either that of the remote
client or of the proxy through which it is available. Perhaps you are
using the server as the proxy and hence this value.

If you want to see more information,

This will list out all tonnes of information about your php.
All the items under the Apache section are accessible as variables - as
used in the above example.

Re: [ilugd] upgrading kernel and installing security patches

2003-08-21 Thread Alok Sinha
Puneet,

A short cut to upgrade linux kernel would be to simply go to RH site and download the
laest kernel rpm. The command is as simple as installing any other rpm. I beleive
there are three kernel releases for rh 9.0.

However, before you do that, you need to know why are you upgrading . and upgrade only
if it is required.

Re: [ilugd] NAT & DNS on 7.2 ?

2003-08-14 Thread Alok Sinha
Shailesh,

Try this.

1. Take two ethernet cards (though u can do with one also, but for
security purposes)

2. Put on eth0 your local network - lets say 192.168.1.* lets say -
192.168.1.1 (rest of your windoze cud be on 192.168.1.*)

3. Put on your eth1 for isp. Now if the isp gives permanent ip address,
great, configure your eth1 for the same, if not, configure your eth1 to
pick address dynamically.
route add gw eth1

3.a. If your eth1 is dynamic, then you will need to execute a script
that automatically runs the route add command everytime it is brought up

4. to run name server, simply install bind, bindutils, caching-name
server rpms (i would strongly recommend to upgrade to rh 9.0 since the
original 7.2 has security punctured bind).

5. I assume you will need to run proxy
Install all rpms of squid on the server. For access control use
squidguard.

6.In addition to this, if you would want internal systems to connect
directly to the net, using your linux box as gw.
6.a - to all machines on your lan make add the gateway as 192.168.1.1
(ip of yr linux box)
6.b - in all your machines on your lan, make the dns as 192.168.1.1
(ip of yr linux box)
6.c A simple and correct method would be to run the linux box as dhcp
server (on eth0) and boot all windoze from this - so that the above
config is not required on client side.
  6.d. execute
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward (this will allow your
linux box to masq)
6.e. Now you need to add rules so that your internal users can go
outside ( i am assuming u r going to use ipchains in 7.2)
ipchains -F (flush)
ipchains -X (remove rules)
ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 -d 0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0 -j
MASQ (Allow all source 192.168.1.0 to talk to any outside
0.0.0.0/0.0.0.0)
You can ofcourse add more filters as you go along.

Thats it - you are on.

7. If you need people from outside to come into your network (gosh! cant
be dumber than this) u will need to add rules in reverse direction.

8. Use webmin, to configure above, it will make your life so much more
simpler.

alok sinha
