Thanks Jim. On 10-10-07 9:47 PM, Jim Emery wrote: Hi Walter, Tina is correct. If the permissions in the Get Info window appear as custom, this indicates that ACLs are in effect. You can check this in the Terminal using the following commands: cd /Volumes ls -le Access Control Lists provide more granular control of permissions than POSIX permissions. Clearing ACLs is one of Apple's suggested methods for file system troubleshooting. On Oct 7, 2010, at 6:20 PM, gifutiger wrote: Greetings Tina, WOW removing all 'ACL's may not be the best thing to do, i.e. Technically seen, an ACL is a list of individual rights which can be attached to a file system object. The ACL can either be empty -in this case, only the conventional POSIX permissions apply-, or it can contain one or more objects called Access Control Entries (ACEs). An Access Control Entry includes the following information: to which users does this entry apply (this can be an individual user or a user group)? does this entry allow or deny access? which right in particular is allowed or denied, respectively? how should this entry be inherited from a folder to the contents of this folder? So what you've done is made all files and application available to all users that can log into your platform. Clearing ACLs will not make all files and applications available to all users that can log onto you platform. Clearing ACLs still leaves POSIX permissions in effect. If you were unable to make changes in the get info window then you were not logged in as the platform owner. As the owner has all privileges. Or sometime you may not be able to make direct changes but need to either add or delete one or more of those listed in the ownership listing. If your log-in name isn't listed then you need to touch the + button and add your name. If you are able to unlock the lock then you should have privileges to add users. The important thing is to make the Ownership of the locked disks the same as the disk that you are logged as that is your main access point. ACLs cannot be defined or altered in the Finder. Trying to change the permissions of files and folders with ACLs set will result in exactly what you experienced. To remove ACLs, you need to use the terminal. They can be removed on individual files or folders as well as recursively. i am locked out
Both of my External FireWire Drives were powered on and their icon's were on the desktop ( iMac/3.06GHz/Snow Leopard ) when i decided for some unknown reason to eject ( Command + I ) both drives to do a apple software update/installation. Upon restarting after the update was completed both external FireWired drives came back on the desktop BUT both had a small lock in the lower left hand corner of the drives icons. Those two drives can not be opened because the message is that i don't have permission to see the contents. Command+I shows that i have Custom access. When I tried to change those settings they revert to Custom access. I ticked on the Ignore ownership on this volume but still locked out. I really need help because the alternative at this time is to erase and lose hours and hours of audio/video projects on one of the two drives. I have tried DiskWarrior 4.2, TechToolPro 5.x, Apple'sDiskUtility by repairing permissions, unplugged the fire wire cable and re-plugged the cable, powered off and back on. No luck at all. Is there any Utility or a terminal command to unlock those drives ? Suggestions/help required please. Keyspan USB Twin Serial Adapter
I was given a Keyspan USB Twin Serial Adapter ( two RS-422 MiniDin8 serial ports ) which would allow me to use a MOTU midi interface and possibly a Apple printer. However the guy could not find the driver installer CD and the Mac it was installed to is long gone to Mac heaven. Re: Leopard?
I always thought that Apple installers run a check to ascertain if the OS software can be installed to the selected hard drive ? Just now the Leopard is being installed to a FireWired drive with a QS G4 ( 933MHz) hosting the drive. No complaints from the installer. When you say slow and performance in the same breath, i have an 8500 with a Sonnet G4 card running the Tiger via XPOSTfacto and it takes a year of Sundays to load web pages. Albeit, midi/audio applications run with no problems ( if you keep the audio plugs down to a just a few ). Re: Several G3 iMac DV 400 MHz questions
Excuse me for dropping into this discussion. I have a iMac G3 that has OS 9.2.2 installed by the guy that sold this blue bean. It is my understanding that i can install OS X on top, right ? However, the said iMac G3's optical drive can only read CD's not DVD's. It rudely spits out the DVD with no explanation. How rude is that? What now ? And also the iMac G3 hard drive is only 10 GB. I've never installed both OS 9.x and OS 10.x from scratch before. 4. Since I don't have any way to connect this old iMac to the Internet, is there any other way to run the Software Updaters for OS 9 OS 10? Perhaps by connecting it with an Ethernet cable to my PowerBook and sharing it's Internet connection? Any other advice would be welcome. Don't forget to partition the drive while you're in Disk Utility after you zero it out. Internet sharing has never worked for me as easily as it seems it should be. Be sure to turn off the firewall in the Sharing or Security preference pane (depending on OS version). Whenever I've used internet sharing I've always ended up having to futz with it, sorry I can't be more specific than that. You could also just disconnect your PowerBook and connect the iMac directly, that might actually be easier. Another way to go would be to get a router, not only does that allow you to connect more than one computer to the internet it also provides a hardware firewall. My QuickSilver G4 (933 MHz) original factory hard drive is showing signs of trouble. It's a 35 GB hard drive and i would like to replace it with at least an 120 GB hard drive. Re: September 2006 iMac Core 2 Duo model RAM: 3GB or 4GB?
Sorry that my message sounded so harsh. I've done the add this RAM and add this Hard drive to many of my Mac's only to discover in the end all that money spent just left me with an old and getting older Mac never really up to snuff. The other problem I face is that I have to hire someone to put back together what I thought I knew how to take a part. I've got several MDD and QS's that were cheap as used units but had a plethera of problems because those machines were prototypes that Apple was practicing on building: poorly constructed heat sinks, mother boards that would fry because of the heat or poorly built by some Chinese factory. Re: iMac G3
Just started to use my new iMac G3 and one of the several annoying items is the sound volume that I can only adjust by opening up the Control Panel : Sound. Now that's a real pain in the studio to always have to adjust the playback levels when using midi/audio applications. Is there an application that will place an control in the menu bar to allow adjusting the sound playback levels ? ( No problem with setting and leaving the alarm levels to near zero,. ) -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. Re: Printing inquiry
I've done #3 for years except for the cartridges that have to have a chip reset gizmo. I usually do about 6 refills and then buy a new or replacement cartridge. I have two ink-jets, a Canon Pixma iP6220D and an HP Photosmart C4400 series (as well as a laser printer), and have been finding it increasingly difficult to get replacement third-party cartridges that work, especially with the Canon. My choices seem to be, in descending order of cost: 1. Branded cartridges 2. Third-party cartridges 3. Refilling myself, by hand As we all know, #1 is very expensive, but of course the manufacturers make their money on the ink, not the machines. #2 is as noted above. Do you-all have recommendations on whether it makes any sense to go to #3, which I have never done, or just suck it up and go to #1? As always, my thanks in advance! *** Bill Spencer in Maryland IMac Core Duo 2.4 ghz/2 g RAM/Snow Leopard IMac Core Duo 1.83 ghz/1 g RAM/Snow Leopard -- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs.
