[IMail Forum] Recently upgraded to 2006.2

2007-04-27 Thread Gil Gomes
I recently upgraded from 2006.03 to 2006.2.  I skipped 2006.1 as I felt the gain simply wasn't worth the pain.  Going to 2006.2 definitely was!
First of all... Kudos to Ipswitch for fixing so many things in this version.  It is SO much easier and enjoyable to use than 2006.03.  My favorite updates?  (These all apply to webmail... )
1) Addresses auto-fill  from the Address Book...2) When the program checks mail... It no longer grabs focus from whatever you're actually working on..3) Attachments come through with the intended file names.. 4) Persistence on the set width of the folder frame... 5) Addition of the print link6) Addition of the "speed bar" that allows you to quickly go from page to page... 7) The "Sent" folder contains the To: address...  not the From: ;o)8) The "Available Storage" bar... 9) "Mark as Unread" and "delete" from a right click over the message...10) Much cleaner looking fonts and icons...Things I'd still like to see...
1) Mark all messages in folder as read...  2) A New Message editor that knows how to single space on a carriage return... ;-P
All in all... THANK YOU!!!  I use your webmail product exclusively and this is SO much easier to deal with...
G R E A T   J O B   G U Y S !!!

Re: [IMail Forum] Moving the user directory to a separate drive - 2006.2

2007-04-18 Thread Gil Gomes
Oy vey...  Here's a line from that reg file...
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ipswitch\IMail\Domains\imail2003.leachandgarner.net\Users\whatsisface]It seems to reference the location as seen by the system.  I'm not sure exactly what you mean by:
"replace your old path with the new path where it is found and save with a new name (take note of the formating with "\\")."
   Thanx for the response... -Gil
Gil,This is easy to do.1) Stop all IMail services.2) Copy the contents of your user directory to the new location.3) Export your HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ipswitch\IMail\Domains registry branch.4) Open that file in a text editor and replace your old path with the new path where it is found and save with a new name (take note of the formating with "\\").5) Double-click the edited registry file to import it and then start your services.Since you haven't done this before, you must back things up before attempting this. The original REG export should be sufficient to restore to the previous state since this will only affect that branch, but I don't want to take responsibility for mistyping something or a misunderstanding, so back up your server first.MattGil Gomes wrote:>> I spent over an hour on the phone with Ipswitch re: this issue. [IMail Forum] Moving the user directory to a separate drive - 2006.2

2007-04-18 Thread Gil Gomes
I spent over an hour on the phone with Ipswitch re: this issue.  I remember someone saying a while back that in order to place the "user" directory on a different volume, you only needed to change the registry setting in Global settings.  Doesn't work...
I called Ipswitch and after futzing around for a bit, getting dialtone in the middle of the conversation and having the technician WEBEX onto my server...  I was told that the "top directory" would also have to be changed to reflect the same volume that I moved the "users" directory to.  I told him I thought this wasn't going to work properly and he assured me that it would...
Everything looked fine from the administrative console.  When I finally logged on as a user, predictably, it didn't work.
If there's anything specific about this out in the archives, I couldn't find it.  After spending over 1/2 hour doing that and well over an hour with Ipswitch support, if the answer IS in the archives somewhere... please be kind enough not to shove my face in it...   I'm already whipped...
Bottom line... Is it possible to change the location of the user directory in Imail 2006.2 in midstream?
Thanx for any help... -Gil

Hi All,

Just wanted to interject that although #2 and #3 are fixed in 2006.2, we are still looking at #1 - the double spacing that occurs in compose mode.  At this point, we don't have a fix that we can include in 2006.2 - something strange with the rich text editor (freetextbox - http://freetextbox.com/default.aspx).  We are more than open to any technical tips/tricks/techniques to get around this annoying behavior.

One workaround, perhaps acceptable to some, might be a plain-text mode for composing in which single spacing would be the default/expected behavior.

Bye for now,

kg

Keep in mind that I no longer have that subject associated with ANY spam filter...

2006-11-03 Thread Gil Gomes
I had an email from a new customer get caught in the html spam filter.  I re-sent it from another location after I disabled the filter.  STILL got caught in the filter and sent out the same subject I had prescribed for anything caught by this filter.  I restarted all of the services...  STILL got caught in the filter... Keep in mind that I no longer have that subject associated with ANY spam filter...
I forgot to mention that this customer and my test account are both on the white list.  I assumed the white list would supersede any anti-spam filtering...   That would be what any administrator would want, wouldn't it...  Is that the case?
I've been on hold with Ipswitch for 25 minutes, so far... stay tuned

New stuff  How about concentrating on fixing existing issues.  It's easy to fall into the mentality Microsoft pioneered years ago.
("Send out a new release that patches some bugs and introduces new features that have yet to reach maturity and are, by definition, buggy... "  )
Even Microsoft has seen the error of its ways with that strategy.  Your people, IMHO, should be working full tilt at dealing with the many issues that are negatively impacting your customer base "out here in the field."  We are NOT in a lab environment and this is not a test...
I deal with tech support at many companies and have done so for many years.  Dealing with technical support technicians with a "Lab" mentality causes this major tic in my right eye...
Again... IMHO maybe your coders should hold off on working on new features, which I'm sure they view as "the fun stuff", and at least temporarily concentrate on the drudge work of getting us all back on our feet.  Most of us have many other issues to deal with besides our email servers...
Your adding a line about "adding some new stuff" is  tantamount to waving a red flag in front of the bulls at Pamplona... I understand you're not a large company and don't have the resources available to quickly react and respond to our every need and whim, but there are serious issues afoot here... Many of us are losing business and/or sleep over some of these issues...

Not to put too fine a point on it and I don't want to seem as though I'm bashing Ipswitch unnecessarily, but being forced to upgrade due to a problem of this nature is irksome.  One of the problems I'll need to deal with might seem rather minuscule to you...
We totally customize the login screens to suit our company's charter and tastes... Ipswitch changed the login.asp and login.aspx files so radically between versions 2006.03 and 2006.1 that we'll have to spend a few hours getting these screens squared away.
I have to assume there was a reason for these changes as I doubt you'd waste horsepower. Minor problem, in the scheme of things, but still painfull...   Could your programmers possibly assume that customers will be modifying the login files to better meld with their custom graphics, rather than going with a totally "form follows function" attitude?
The other reasons I wasn't planning on ever upgrading to 2006.1 all concern the lack of progress in regards to the many issues we have with your web mail.  I believe there were a couple of minor corrections that we thought were improvements...
1)The gauge showing how much disk space was utilized and is left.
2) Showing who the email was TO and not FROM in the sent folder...
I guess I know where I'll be this Saturday, eh?

Re: [IMail Forum] It is worth it to buy the SA?

2006-10-25 Thread Gil Gomes
I've been lurking in the weeds watching this discussion very quickly pick up momentum.  I thought I was internally over-reacting in my perception that Ipswitch has become dollar driven to the point that it's obviously become detrimental to their client base.  Apparently that isn't just my opinion.
I've forced myself, for the past five months, to use the webmail client that came with iMAIL 2006.03.  There are some issues that I just find mind boggling.  For example...
1) When I hit the key, I get double spaced.  That's a very handy feature if you're interested in double spacing every line in every email.
2) The sent folder, at a glance, shows that all of the mail was sent from me, but not who it was sent to. How does that happen?  Is that what Ipswitch QA thought their customers wanted?
There are issues with attachments that I've been questioning for months, with no answer.
I asked one of our sales correspondents to use this client as it would solve a number of his problems.  After two weeks he explained that he'd much rather live with the myriad of problems he was previously encumbered with than to have to use this slow, buggy, irritating client.  He also mentioned the fact that the main screen constantly popped in front of the "New Message" screen while he was typing a longish email...  Another wonderful feature...
Is Ipswitch purposely under staffing for this product?  Does it have programmers with the wrong mindset putting this together? Something is obviously going on over there that's making it difficult to put out a quality product...
bye for now...-Gil

With Microsoft, you are not paying an annual service agreement over and above the purchase price. In this instance Windows 95 is not a good example nor would Windows 2000 as they both are much older products than version 8.x of IMail. Also, if those companies who had the keys had service agreements with their clients then yes they should be required to produce software to alleviate the need for the parallel port.  I may be mistaken but I seem to recall some court cases against Microsoft that ended up requiring them to support software up to 4 years from its creation and to maintain patches for the software for a 4 year period from the time of the following upgrade. But then again I could be mistaken.
The problem with the version 8.x Imail server also effects version 2006. 2006 is a massive rewrite with minor changes made to certain parts of the code. I think Ipswitch got caught with two generations of the product having problems and is not capable of handling two different rewrites for patches.
I do hope that Ipswitch decides to reverse their decision to not support version 8.x and supplies the fix for the smtp vulnerability to SA holders as that is part of what we are and have been paying for so many years. This non-support stance has been evident with Ipswitch management several times before this and has lost them a large portion of the market to competing products. This move could loose them the balance of their loyal base or cause a class action to be taken against them. I hope that does not happen.

So if a vulnerability is discovered in Windows 95, Microsoft should spend the time and resources developing a patch to fix it?

What about all those software vendors that were using old style parallel port keys that became obsolete when Windows XP came out? Should those software vendors have been forced to provide entirely new versions of software and keys that were working perfectly fine under DOS 6.22 or Windows 3.1 for free?

The only problem is that the alternatives aren't exactly that great.  SmarterMail looks like a great product, but it's still lacking some of the fundamental elements of a corporate mail server like TLS.  They also remind me now of how IPswitch was 5 or 6 years ago.  I'm afraid that if I jump ship to SM, in a few years they'll start going down the same over-priced, feature-bloated, performance-lacking, unstability-ridden road that Ipswitch (and Declude) did.  I've looked at the other alternative products and none are really that viable IMO.

The asp extensions are mapped to asp.dll and asp.dll resides where it's looking for it.  I do, however, get the "file not found" error when browsing login.asp from within the IIS admin console.
The files were indeed delivered to the correct place...
My site settings are pointing to the correct place... I can access "iclient" without issue...
This is pretty weird, really.  I've been through some of your suggestions already to no avail.  Do you have any other ideas?
Thanx for the response...

By the way... I hope you don't mind the double spacing.  I'm using Imail's web client Looks like that problem didn't get fixed in 2006.1 either, eh?

Gil,
Some of the issues which can cause what you are seeing are as follows:
1)   asp extensions are not mapped to any dll (if .03 was working, this is not likely) If you can open the Iadmin virtual directory in the IIS console and see the login.asp file, then right click and select browse. If you still get page not found this is likely your problem. It that happens, select properties on the site ( in the IIS console) which hosts your iadmin virtual directory and go to the home directory tab. Check that Application Name is not grayed out(if so click the create button) and check the configuration button mappings tab. Verify that .asp is in the list and points to asp.dll.
2)   Files got delivered to the correct place.  Check your virtual directory in IIS and verify that you can see the login.asp file.
3)   Your site settings are pointing to the wrong place (IP, port, host headers) (again if this was working in .03 this is not likely)

There may be other possible issues but those are the most common.

It is voltage regulation that is the most important point here. The problem is that the generator has to be big enough that it doesn't even know the load is there.I tried this a few years ago when I knew there was going to be an outage due to planned maintenance. The plant used about 3.6kW and got a 7.5kW generator. When the generator got up to nominal voltage and the UPSs transferred the load, the generator slowed down due to the load and the UPSs kicked back in, releasing the load. That allowed the generator to speed up. This created a really weird situation where everything was switching back and forth every second or so. I let it run for a little while in the hopes that the system would eventually get to an equilibrium point. It didn't.The small gas-powered gensets use minimal flywheels and "quick" mechanical servos to keep the weight down, but they are just too lightweight for decent regulation. The momentum/inertia of the motor and generator, combined with the mechanical servo, could not hope to keep pace with the instant load switching capabilities of the UPSs.I came away from that experience with a healthy respect for the REALLY heavy flywheels that come with big diesel gensets. These dampen the genset's response to sudden load switching.-d- Original Message - From: "John T (Lists)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>To: Sent: Friday, July 28, 2006 5:19 PMSubject: RE: [IMail Forum] OT: Portable Generator for server roomUsage of this room is only 2.5 KW.John TeServices For You"Seek, and ye shall find!"> -Original Message-> From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:Imail_Forum-> [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of GlobalWeb.net Webmaster> Sent: Friday, July 28, 2006 2:10 PM> To: Imail_Forum@list.ipswitch.com> Subject: RE: [IMail Forum] OT: Portable Generator for server room>> We rent a 50KW or 75KW generator from the local Equipment shop down the> street - we have approx 4 hours of battery life for our 5 racks ofservers;> this is plenty of time for them to drop one off to us - day or night.>> We have gone with a 20KW before, but we place a big strain on a unit that> size.>>> Sincerely,>> Randy Armbrecht> Global Web Solutions, Inc.> 804-346-5300 x112> 877-800-GLOBAL (4562) x112> http://globalweb.net -Original Message-> From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]> [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of John T (Lists)> Sent: Friday, July 28, 2006 4:55 PM> To: Imail_Forum@list.ipswitch.com> Subject: [IMail Forum] OT: Portable Generator for server room>> Has any one used a portable generator for a small server room to power the> server UPS batteries during an extended power outage?>> If so, what brand and specs?>> John T> eServices For You>> "Seek, and ye shall find!">>> To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.html> List Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/> Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/>> To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.html> List Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/> Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.htmlList Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/To Unsubscribe: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/mailing-lists.htmlList Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/imail_forum%40list.ipswitch.com/Knowledge Base/FAQ: http://www.ipswitch.com/support/IMail/

Is there a way to insert a global footer (disclaimer) in all emails that are sent out from a specific domain.  If it doesn't work with html, that's fine.  I've already explained that issue to the brass and they would still like me to pursue this.  (Again, it doesn't necessarily have to make sense...)
Thanx for any info...

(sent again, as it never seems to show up on the list...)

After using the test database for months with good success, we purchased a messageSniffer one-year license, and then ended up switching to a BSD-based mail system, totally away from Windows/iMail.

During our time on Windows/iMail, the sniffer account/databases were doing pretty well.  I remember some false positive incidents, but the sniffer folks responded very quickly.  Overall, the inefficiency of windows and windows apps, when looking at the steady increase in volume, led us to qmail/bsd.  More bang for the buck, period.

We were going to implement sniffer on BSD, but for us it really was unnecessary in the end; using ClamAV (which runs great on bsd, compared to windows), and SpamAssassin, all combined with rblsmtpd which does a lookup while the SMTP session is still open (actively rejecting spam WITHOUT sending a bounce but instead doing a 553 during the smtp connect) has been phenominal... server barely breaks a sweat, where the windows server was choking.  And we've taken on more clients/domains since then... our Windows/iMail box would have never made it.

ANYWAY...
Therefore, I have about a half year left on a sniffer "license", that I would be willing to unload at a small discount if you are going to go with sniffer and want to actually keep the database mega-current, as the sniffer account does for you.  It would allow you to use the "live" database for another 6 months or more, without making a full year investment, to really see if your tests give you the answers you want.

Contact me off-list if you are interested; and I need to confirm with the sniffer folks how to "transfer" ownership of this account.  I don't think they should have a problem with it, since we only used it for three months before switching to a technology where it could not be easily implemented...

Hi,

Actually I'm playing around with ASSP. The installation was quite easy. I
spend some

time to get the perl modules. The documentation is a bit outdated, some
modules

have now a different name.

I would like to know, how many people from this list are using ASSP and
please tell

Firstly.  Thank you for sharing the script with us.  I have a few other questions, if that's okay.  You mentioned that the vacationon and vacationoff users were pointed at specific batch files.  I'd need to know what's in those files to be able to emulate your situation.  The script also mentions "vacationon.txt" and "vacationlog.txt" as well as "errorlog.txt."  I'm assuming the two log files are just output from the program, but what is "vacationon.txt"?

I've been looking around the webmail also. One nice feature I'm sure our customers would like to see is a grouping feature for contacts.  Just as Gil notes, Outlook Express has an option to create groups so that you can send mail to many people easily.  This would be nice to have in the webmail, maybe with a cap of 20-25 users per group, so that sending broadcast mails is not possible.

Sorry if this sounds dumb - on a windows domain the domainname/username
combo should be: DN\UN [name_of_your_domain\paege]

What is the name of the domain you created? (not the server name)

Hi again,

after all the web messaging problems I had before with my installation I
finally went back to a backup that has a clean IMail 2006.3 install.
This time I did not try to promote the machine to be a Windows domain
controller.

I still see problems with web messaging. Different problems.
I can direct my browser to http://192.168.1.5/iClient and get the Ipswitch
Web Messaging logon screen. That is a step forward!

But what am I supposed to enter as username/password.

For
  username paege
  password mypassword
I get
"Unable to log into the system.
Reason: The Domain does not exist"

For
  username iclient/paege
  password mypassword
I get
  "Invalid username/password"

I tried with different users. All have "Allow Web Access" checked. I
double

checked all passwords. No go.
Maybe I'm stupid.

All tests were local - no firewalls involved. But from outside the
firewall

the tests show the same results.

Help needed - still...

Regards

[IMail Forum] Imail 2006 User contact information...

2006-04-17 Thread Gil Gomes
We're in the process of installing Imail 2006.3. We ran the wgscvt.exe
utility before the alias.txt files were corrected. I have 15 users who have
over 200 personal contacts that need to be deleted. I was told by IPswitch
tech support that the only way to eliminate all of these entities from these
users is to log on as these users and delete these contacs one at a time.

Can this possibly be correct? I'm assuming there's a reason that the
individual contacts are being stored in the master database... There IS a
reason, correct? The nice part about doing so is that you can delete the
user accounts, re-add the accounts, and the erroneous information is still
present. Any ideas? Any utilities on the way? This just seems so
completely half baked that I'm at a loss for words...

[IMail Forum] Clients with internal email only...

2005-09-08 Thread Gil Gomes

I just searched the archives for
this and couldn't find anything specific enough to help...  Anyhoo...
I have a request from managment to restrict a group of individuals to be able to
utilize email for internal use only.  They don't want them to be able to
send or receive email, through our server, outside of the company...

    I had a similar setup, a few
years back, with Sendmail for NT where I had to utilize two separate
servers.  Does anyone know of any method, or softwarre, I could use to
effect this without purchasing hardware?

Thanx...

Re: [IMail Forum] WAY OT: Recommended Switches

2005-06-30 Thread Gil Gomes

I've had a lot of luck with 3Com
switches as well.  The managed switches have a decent interface for remote
tweaking, shutting down specific ports, etc...  3Com also supplies usable,
free, management console software...  There's a much more powerful version
of that software that sells in the $3,000 range...

LinkSys should be pretty good but if you
are looking for something that can be centrally managed go with Cisco, HP, or
Nortel. All come with management suites that allow you manage the devices via
a web interface once you set it up through the console. We use Nortel
BayStacks here, but we used to use some of the HP Procurves. Can’t tell a
whole lot of difference between them.

  I am
looking at upgrading/replacing some switches.  I currently use NetGear
and while they have been pretty reliable it seems they just drop packets for
no good reason.  I would like something a little more robust and less
“home user.”  Of course, Cisco’s would be great, but that isn’t in the
budget.  Are the newer NetGear’s better?  More reliable?  Is
there a model anyone recommends in particular?  Or is there another brand
you recommend?  I have never had luck with LinkSys, but maybe they are
better now since Cisco bought them?  Any input on
  that?

  It
just needs to be a simple switch, unmanaged.  However, if the price is
right, I would like a managed L2 or L3 switch.

  Thanks!

It is already so. If you try to send an email to an account on my Imail
server that doesn't exist or isn't a valid alias on the box, Imail will
not accept the message. The only way you could be getting emails to
non-existent accounts is if you are using a nobody alias. If you are,
then all emails will be accepted. Get rid of the nobody alias to
achieve your goal.

Are there any plans for future versions of Imail to contain an
option that would allow mail to be processed ONLY if it's addressed to
valid users or aliases? I know there are third party applications that
supply this option. I just find it odd that Imail, which actually
CONTAINS these tables, doesn't have this option. Am I
oversimplifying??? Does this need to be processed/filtered by an entity
before the email actually reaches the Imail server?

[IMail Forum] Requiring Authentication of local email clients

2005-06-13 Thread Gil Gomes
I've gone through the archives and can't find the exact answer to a
specific question, so... here goes...

We're a fairly small company with 150 email clients located in this
building. I'd like to force authentication from our clients. We currently
have "Relay mail for:" set to our internal IP range (192.168.3.0) under SMTP
Security. If you click on the "Addresses" TAB under SMTP security, you can
see where this IP range is set as well as a checkbox that states "Skip
AntiSpam Filters" This selection is checked...

From what I can ascertain, the only way to force authentication for
these local users is to set SMTP security to "No Mail Relay". If I do so,
will this also force all of the local users' outgoing email through the
AntiSpam Filters?

Thanx for any help...

Re: [IMail Forum] Dictionary Attacks

2005-05-26 Thread Gil Gomes
That's extremely interesting to us. We have a total of 300 or so
users/aliases. Having the ability to bounce anything addressed to anyone
off that list would kill most dictionary attacks as well as email to ex
employees and old aliases. We're using Symantec SMS SMTP as a gateway for
IMAIL. Where would ORF sit? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

-Gil

I finally had the time to test and setup ORF on my backup MX and it had cut
down the load tremendously. I have it set to reject non-known addresses via
creating a list of local e-mails including aliases and importing that into
ORF.

[IMail Forum] Content filtering...

2005-05-06 Thread Gil Gomes
I couldn't find an answer specific enough to my question in the
archives. We're using Imail 8.1. I've noticed that a number of obvious
"hits" are getting past the content filter. I have scan set to "Subject and
body" and we have the action set to "Forward to address" with a specific
subject prefix . Something as obvious as "rolex" in plain text is still
being passed through. I've tried having "Normalize words" both checked and

Last time I checked, Brightmail was pretty expensive... I think the retail
is $41.40 per year for each user (quantity 10). At quantity=500 it's
$24.30 per user, but that's still really expensive. It's a subscription
service, so you have to renew every year (you can contract up to 3 years).
If anyone has great pricing, let us know.

The Brightmail demo didn't have the SMTP server.
SMS SMTP is a product that sits at the gateway and filters for
virus, spam (using the default heuristics module without the Premium
AntiSpam Service) key words in both subject and message body and file
extensions. You can also hook it up to BlackList services. You can
configure it to route the mail, by domain, to another mail server. We
have two domains and have SMS SMTP routing both of them to iMail. The
default heuristic anti-spam feature isn't the best. We always had a
difficult time finding a balance between too much spam and too many
false positives. With version 4.1 of SMS SMTP, you can purchase the
Premium AntiSpam service (which uses the BrightMail plugin.) Adding
this feature disables the default heuristic anti-spam module. Works
like a charm. Oh... and SMS SMTP also contains a white list...

The weird thing is... When we receive the wrong MX record it's always an
IP address for another mail server that's supplied by that ISP. Just not
the correct one. The IP address is never the A record for the domain. The
error is usually that the mailbox couldn't be found on that server.

In every case, where we've had this isssue, our customer's mail server
is supplied by an ISP and never an in-house box.

Thanx for the response, Scott...

Cache pollution was my initial reaction. I have the cache secured
against pollution and have followed Microsoft's best practices in order to
attenuate that problem... (for what that's worth... )

We do have recursion enabled, but the AD/DNS box is not directly
accessible via the internet. We're also forwarding to an AT&T DNS server.
Good advice re: running BIND DNS for Imail... I have a few boxes kicking
around that I could set up with LINUX...

Thanx for the advice...

[IMail Forum] DNS issues...

2004-12-08 Thread Gil Gomes

We've had a few interesting DNS related issues
lately.

    We're running Active Directory
on Windows 2003 Servers.  99% of the time, all is well.  Occassionally
we seem to be pulling erroneous MX information.  When I do an nslookup
type=MX from the Imail server, I get the correct information... most of the
time.  The erroneous server is always another server that's located at the
provider for the company in question.  I check their DNS server and can
find no problems...

I even had one where we'd
apparently come up with the IP of an internal POP server for earthlink, instead
of one of their outward facing MX servers.  I couldn't find anything that
would validate that IP address popping up.  I tend to put this all down to
DNS issues out there at these companies...  But it's occurring frequently
enough to make me nervous.  I thought I'd ask the group to see if this is
anything you all have come across...

    I've even added internal zones
for a few of our customers who we've had this problem with, to insure we're
firing mail off to the right MX box...  Any help would be very much
appreciated...

Thanx...

We're more than happy to comply. Not only have you caused myself and my
company a certain amount of grief with this situation and your apparent
corporate attitude of "who cares?" regarding your currently installed user
base... but... You've put myself, as well as many others, in a very bad
situation for recommending Imail as an excellent solution to OUR client
base... Thanx...

We'll never use any Ipswitch product again. How can we? Would you
ever incorporate software into YOUR infrastructure that relied on a vendor
with an obviously unstable business attitude? This entire situation is
bizarre, at best...

Here's hoping your new product line founders badly and puts your
marketing director in a bread line... Wrong... People like that very
seldom go hungry. They just migrate to another company and pee in their
well...

Re: [IMail Forum] Collaboration is now available

2004-10-26 Thread Gil Gomes

I'm in a similar boat. We had been on the Sendmail for NT product for a
number of years. When we first purchased Sendmail it was a MetaInfo
product. MetaInfo decided to focus on TCPIP tools and sold Sendmail for NT
to Sendmail (the ubiquitous *NIX mail server producers...) Within a year or
so, Sendmail scaled this product way beyond our needs and budget.

I hung tough for a few years using a dead product on a dead NOS and finally
decided on a nice, stable, widely used product. Imail. Inside of one
year... Here we go again.

I can understand the market pressure companies like Sendmail and Ipswitch
are under. That doesn't mean, as an end user, I need to like their response
to that pressure. I held no animosity towards Sendmail as they were
bringing their Window$ product into line with their *nix offering.
Supporting both products would have been a nightmare for them.

Ipswitch, on the other hand, has decided to totally vacate this market for
what appears to be arbitrary reasons. It appears that they'd much rather
hunt for bigger game and no longer have any use for the businesses who've
helped fill their coffers in the past. I'll never use another Ipswitch
product again, for any reason, under any circumstances... Primarily because
of the way the approached this issue... the spin they put on this issue...
and their total disregard for those who supported this product...

[IMail Forum] Inbound Rule Filtering of Attachments

2004-04-08 Thread Gil Gomes

I know this has come up before, but being a newbie... I'm still
struggling with the mechanics. I have a server containing Symantec's
SAVSMTP product passing mail off to my IMAIL server, which went live
yesterday... (yay!) When it finds an inappropriate file attachment
extension, or virus, it sends a file called DELETED0.TXT which contains an
explanation of why the attachment was deleted. This is being sent along to
the end user.

SAVSMTP doesn't (yet) have the capability to deal with the actual email
that carried the attachment. I would like to forward ALL of these emails to
a specific mailbox and insure that they aren't going to make it to the end
user.

From what I understand... B~name="DELETED0.TXT":NUL would delete these
emails... Which wouldn't be optimal, but would be lightyears ahead of where
we are now... Here's where I'm having trouble... I'm assuming this code
would be loaded into "inbound rules" When I start this process, it gives me
logical options...

if the subject
if the from address
if the body text
if the to address
if the sender
if the header text
etc...

It seems I'm in the right book... wrong page. Could someone attempt to
enlighten me as to the mechanics of utilizing this type of code? Please
have mercy on this humble newbie... any light you guys could shed might
relieve a migraine...
Thanx...

Re: [IMail Forum] IMail Advanced spam checker add-in

  spam checker add-in

Anything that'll help with SPAM... (especially
  FREEware...) Count me in.
  Thanx...
  -Gil

  Hi
  all,

  just wanted to
know that i have written a little program to catch even more spam than IMail
itself can do with on-board stuff. The reason why I coded it is that we don't
have the budget to buy Declude (well, actally my boss isn't willed to pay
anything more for mail stuff), plus with this thingy I have complete control
over what I want to let through and what not. Own code means full control
  :).

  If anybody is
interested in using it as well, let me know and I package it
  up.

  What it
  does:
  - makes upper and
  mixed case
  - Adds a X-Header
(which then can be handled by in- and outbound
  rules) when:
    - there is
  a line break between the
    - link
after href= "" no "" around (also often used by spam
  mails)
    - there is
an URL that has a 2nd one included (like http://g.msn.com/bla/somescript?site=http://realspamsite.com)
    - there is
an URL that contains a @ for the domain part (used as
  username)
    - there is
an URL that contains a % for the domain part (used as ASCII code
  initiater)
    - contains
a specific phrase of a list provided via a text file. (*)

  (*) The big
advantage of this phrase over Content Filtering and Rules in IMail is that you
can easily define a list of an exact character definition that leads to spam.
Since it is a "dump" byte-by-byte comparison without case changing and
where "." means "." and nothing else, and it also finds substrings, it is for
example great to find patterns in URLs. A lot of spam is for example
successfully found with the patterns "/v9.gif", "/gone.php",
".biz/" and "?AFF_ID=". This is an important feature because a lot of
spam mailers own quite a few domains, so their domainname changes quite
often, but for example the filename of the JPG they are accessing is
  always the same.

Please note that this is of course no competition to Declude or
anything else, but it is a quick'n'dirty little helper tool that increases
effiency at least here dramatically. (On the other hand this are all things
that *should* be provided by IMail itself). Basically it is the result of my
spam analysing the last 2 months.

  Of course I can
give you no warranty or support or anything like that, so using it would
  be your own risk!

the KB. And, he didn't have to waste his time re-typing what is clearly
already in the KB.

We all wish it wouldn't... but then again, we were all newbies once. It
would seem a lot easier, and a lot better use of YOUR time, to hit your
DELETE key, instead of taking time to tear the person a new butt hole over
it. And then, start a whiny-ass thread about it. And refer back to that

out of our day to post a response when we've finally had enough of this crap
coming down to us.

Rod was helpful. Many others have been helpful. The damn link to "How to
properly ask a question" is useful. Beyond that, just face it -- there are
ALWAYS newcomers, and it would seem much more wise to guide them gently but
firmly rather than piss them off and have them say "well, I wanted to use
iMail, but xxx problem, compounded by the arrogance of their support list,
kinda pushed me towards product xxx".

Re: [IMail Forum] AOL delivery issues

2004-03-11 Thread Gil Gomes
I should have spent a bit more time composing my previous post, my
apologies. The COO became aware of the problem when sending email to his
home (AOL) account from his work account... The email that was considered
SPAM by AOL came from here...
Again... my apologies for not being clear...

Re: [IMail Forum] AOL delivery issues

2004-03-11 Thread Gil Gomes

Our COO has an AOL account and had a similar issue. His email was
considered SPAM since there was no PTR record for his IP address, I was told
by a techie on the AOL support staff. We're using NAT through a
Checkpoint firewall and all of our mail is perceived as coming from the same
IP Address, our firewall's. I inserted an A and PTR record for that IP
address and the problem resolved...

Re: Re[2]: [IMail Forum] Host name issue

2004-03-08 Thread Gil Gomes

There may be mucho comments re: this throughout the archives, but I
recently read (on here) that the way our server is configured is backwards.
(regarding machine.domain.com.) I asked the question in an effort to
resolve this issue, not through being too lazy to check the archives.

Also... if you read my email... I stated that the problem might be
related to this issue. Since it isn't, then it SHOULD be in a separate
thread. Not knowing that it wasn't related at the time, until the question
was answered, made it hard to make that determination at that time. In
other words... If I knew the answer, I would have known it was off topic.

Weren't you ever new to Imail? Or did you spring out of the womb fully
versed? ;) I know... I know... off topic... end of conversation.
Sorry...

Re: [IMail Forum] Host name issue

2004-03-08 Thread Gil Gomes

It's Monday... I think I've achieved maximum density... ;)

Which should be the alias? machine.example.com or example.com? We just
started playing with webmail and we're seeing some funky results that may be
related to this issue.

We're using Outlook Express (Ver. 6.00 with all the latest MS updates) and
have set up an IMAP account. From within Outlook Express we've created a
new folder and moved a bunch of mail into that folder. When we create the
same account on another PC, we see that mail... No probs. When we go to
WebMail... we see that folder, with no mail. This is our first encounter
with Webmail management... I'm sure there's something basic we're just
plain overlooking...

Thanx...

[IMail Forum] Imail Anti-Spam... Worthwhile???

2004-03-05 Thread Gil Gomes
We're currently using Symantec SAV SMTP for anti-virus/anti-spam. The
one thing this product doesn't offer, at this time, is message body
filtering. I was wondering what kind of luck you all have had with the
anti-spam capabilities built in to Imail... Is it worthwhile? If so... are
there any issues that we should be aware of?

Thanx...
-Gil

Re: [IMail Forum] Problem with antivirus

2004-03-04 Thread Gil Gomes

We're currently using Symantec SAV SMTP Gateway product (on a separate
server) in conjunction with Sendmail for NT (VERY soon to Imail... ) Thanx
to Declude's excellent virus test site, I'll be sleeping with both eyes
closed tonight. The combination seems to work just fine.

I couldn't agree more re: having anti-virus software at the desktop and
an pre-warned, alert user base that is OFTEN reminded of the dangers of
email borne virus/trojan threats... This has saved our cumulative butts on
at least three documented occasions. Also... Thanx to all for the help
you've already given me in setting up Imail... (I feel like such a Noob... )
;)
