We have a committee that meets when needed during the year (maybe three times). It has teachers and administrators from each building and also the supt. We discuss technology that is used in the classroom, problems/concerns, and also where we would like to go in the future. It is called the technology committee. We do something similar as Brad. Most of the time we start a project with one or two teachers who buy into the project and then when they have it running we get more of the other teachers involved. The last time I formed a committee for anything was to redesign the website. A year and a half later, after meetings every two weeks, I built a website in a motel room in Houston while killing time while my girlfriend was at work. I immediately disbanded the committee by refusing to ever show up again, and have since sworn off of them. Near as I can figure it, this was the most productive Committee I have ever been on. -Original Message- From: info-tech-ow...@aea8.k12.ia.us on behalf of Jackie Fonley Sent: Tue 12/15/2009 7:02 PM To: Info Tech Subject: [info-tech] technology advisory board Hey, all! Your tech teacher award intrigues me . . . technology integration is one of our PD strands this year -- something like this would be interesting to roll out as we train staff how to use this. Do you have any additional information on this? On Dec 16, 2009, at 7:51 AM, Henn, Layne wrote: Jackie, We really have 2. One is a larger group made up of teachers K-12. These teachers act as trainers in our buildings for using technology with instruction. The other group is a instructional technology council. The main focus here is to review our quarterly tech-teacher award. This is just getting off the ground. The group is board members, parents, AEA rep, principal, teacher, student. Re: [info-tech] technology advisory board
While there may be some disagreement on the practicality and usefulness of committees, they are required by the State in some areas for the State visit. While not currently mandated, the technology committee is very much recommended by the Site Visit Teams as per instructions from the State DE. I would recommend setting up one that has an Administrator, Board Member, Faculty Member, and a Community Member. I really like the way that Layne described the setup in Sioux City. That seems like a very good way to go. My only fear is that the once a month non face to face meeting would be like herding cats. And with Teachers (speaking as a teacher) non the less. Just sayin... Re: [info-tech] technology advisory board
I currently create long term purchasing plans; continuous, short term and long term goals/vision that gets shared administratively . . . and then publish a tech newsletter for all staff about 3 times/year discussing what's been going on, training being offered, some things we are looking into, etc. (which reminds me--I need to get one out before break!). But what I also wonder if there needs to be a collective group (teaching staff, admin, board)-- who you can also go back to as one of your own have made these decisions also. -- a step beyond the information you put out to everyone. RE: [info-tech] technology advisory board
Jackie, Okoboji has a Tech Team and we meet nearly every week on Tuesday unless something comes up. I lead those meetings and the members are our superintendent, our media specialist/technology integrationist, our .5 time tech, and our school board president. When we do think about using new or different technologies, we usually have a test group of teachers. Those teachers then share their experiences with either just us or the entire staff. I do understand the frustration with committees, but I feel they are important so that everyone has a chance to share their ideas. Once in a while I am like Kurt, and go off on my own, create something, and then present that to the team and say how about this. I do absolutely hate going in circles during a meeting. In fact I recently requested to be removed from a committee that constantly went in circles. It drove me nuts! So, by leading the tech team, I do my very best to not go in circles during our meetings. This doesn't always occur, but mostly it does. I think that the most successful meetings are those that have a preshared, editable (we are using Google Docs for this now) agenda that by meeting time is set. Then there is a task master making sure the meeting stays on track. Tangent can kill a meeting. If you've made it this far, I appreciate you listening to my rant. My $.02. I guess my view of a committee is that it should NOT be a group of people all trying to come to a consensus on everything. Chad- West Des Moines talked about using the Lumens Flex Cams (the red ladybug as our District now knows them by) as a Skype camera. Can't vouch for it, and don't know about the microphone idea either. But, it is on my list of things to check out. I have discovered a few options, but I am wondering what others might be using for this purpose. Thanks, Chad Frerichs Director of Technology Okoboji Community Schools
[info-tech] E-rate webhosting
Just got this from my erate helper, not sure that it affect any of you but, here ya go Webhosting FYI: The FCC has indicated that in all likelihood they will deem webhosting ineligible starting with FY2011 (7/1/2011 – 6/30/2012). So we would advise if you sign a contract this year for webhosting services that it be for only 1 year and include a clause contingent upon receiving e-rate funding. Karl H. Re: [info-tech] Skype and boardrooms
Logitech Quickcam 9000. We just worked with one in the boardroom last night. It worked great right up until he lost connection in Des Moines...
