Using Skype with no issues here.  In fact, the high school just had a conversation with a P.E. teacher over in England on Wed. of this week.  I'm using SonicWall.

Have a good one,

re: [info-tech] Skype

2010-11-12 Thread Tim Limbert
We use Skype quite a bit here, and have seen no major problems (technical
ones, anyway). We've never really had any trouble with Skype traffic
getting through, and I'm not sure why, really, because I don't feel like
I've done anything special to make it work. Our firewall setup is simple,
and our content filters are fairly open.

Quick question:

Who uses Skype, and do you have any issues getting the traffic past your
content filter? Our content filter stops it as P2P traffic (which it
really is...). I could get past that if I could use a specific port, but
Skype is all over the place on ports, and you can only set a static inbound
port, not outbound. I am working with the vendor (Deep Nines), but I am
curious what others are doing.

Google Talk anyone?

2010-11-12 Thread Pearson, Jeremy
We have several people using Skype, and have really had no issues, other than a
dropped call here and there and some bad video once in a while. In fact, we
are teaching a class over it to 5 kids somewhere on the east side of the state.
No real big problems. Definitely a program that we could use more of!!!
We are using Lightspeed for content filtering.
Have a great, beautiful weekend!!!

Re: [info-tech] Skype

2010-04-06 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]

I have a couple of ideas, but neither is really simple.

The first Idea is you can use TCPView, a Windows application that will show
all the connections from a computer. This will require you to run Skype on
a Windows machine along with TCPView. When I tried it on my machine I did
not see any connections except for some connection to comcast network.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437.aspx

The other way would be to install Wireshark on the Skype machine and capture
packets as Skype starts. This is a little more complicated, but the good
new is that it will run with 10 X 10.5.

Let me know if you need help with either tool.

doing content filtering and has no firewall rules so no ports are being
blocked at that level. What I am trying to trackdown is... when Skype
authenticates does it only talk with a Skype.com domain or is it
something like iTunes and connects to akami.net or some other redirect.

There appears to be more to it than that. Students can get to
Skype.com but cannot log into the skype application. I think that the
authentication process redirects to another domain, but I can't verify

I think I have to vote for Skype here. We've used it for a number of
things, and I like that it's simple, familiar and cross-platform. The
latest version of Skype does screen sharing.

Re: [info-tech] skype (or other suggestion)

2010-01-19 Thread Bud Carruthers

Jackie,

If you find something that you think really works well, please share it.

I use skype to see my grandkids and also to talk to Scott F and David
Herzog at MCP - occasionally. We found that you can show your desktop
to the other side. I have also showed video from my flip video camera
from my desktop and it works great. You can hear the videos audio and
at the same time here both sides of the skype call.

As long as you have a strong connection signal the call goes well. My
son in Monterey, Ca has a poor signal and it breaks up all the time.
The other problem is that each side has to move slowly or you get
pixillation. Good luck with this adventure.

What is your skype address?

RE: [info-tech] skype (or other suggestion)

2010-01-19 Thread Richardson,Tony
We had a little girl in the Middle School with cancer and purchased some
Linksys cameras and put them in the classrooms. Opened up in a limited
fashion the firewall to the website on the cameras. From her hospital
bed she could Pan and Zoom in on the instructional area and some parts
of the classrooms and could hear the teacher well. Worked really great
for a couple of years until she got better and now attends class. Cost
about $1000.00 for 4 cameras.

RE: [info-tech] skype (or other suggestion)

2010-01-19 Thread McKenney, Kurt
We have used Skype with success from long term hospitals and other
continents.

I'm not all that familiar with Mac's but a headset would be a solid
investment for the student. A projector or a big screen monitor seems
appropriate for the classroom. The classroom should be able to get by
with a simple condenser microphone, and if there is a built in camera
you should be set.

Re: [info-tech] Skype and boardrooms

2009-12-16 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
You can use the Polycom unit if you purchase a Video to USB adaptor for your
computer. Then you have a full Pan/Tilt/Zoom camera with a good boundary
microphone. Just connect the video out that would go to the TV to the USB
adaptor. Probably overkill for most, but if you still have your unit around it
is an idea.

probably 25 feet to the far side of the table where the board president was

Logitech Quickcam 9000. We just worked with one in the boardroom last night.
It worked great right up until he lost connection in Des Moines...

I am looking for a webcam to use for Skype in a boardroom or larger setting
that has a sufficient built-in microphone. I have discovered a few options, but
I am wondering what others might be using for this purpose.

Thanks,

Chad-

West Des Moines talked about using the Lumens Flex Cams (the
red ladybug as our District now knows them by) as a Skype camera. Can't
vouch for it, and don't know about the microphone idea either. But, it
is on my list of things to check out.

This one actually has two microphones:

While this one has an external mic:

Chad, check out the Philips cameras. They make a few that have external
mics, which you could place for the best reception.

My office staff uses it and loves it, but I don't get that much chance to sit

I personally use it and love it. Works great to talk to anyone. And
yes I think it would work great for one to one questions. Just my two

Re: [info-tech] Skype?

2009-08-05 Thread Karen Appleton
Chad,
I use Skype personally to stay in touch with my daughter who is currently
studying in Egypt. I have visited with a couple of teachers who will be
teaching ancient civilizations with their middle school students, and there is
a possibility my daughter might Skype with a class or two to talk about what
she has seen and to compare/contrast her impressions of modern Egypt with
ancient Egypt.

We also have some of our AEA SLPs set up to do some therapy using Skype this
year.

We are trying it out for between buildings and between districts with

I used to prefer iChat but now Skype seems to be gaining.
