[IRCA] Beverage antenna kit

2010-09-06 Thread Patrick Griffith

I noticed that someone has Beverage antenna kits for sale on e-bay. These are
being sold as 160/80 meter amateur band Beverages but I suspect they would work
well for the AM BCB. The kit includes a 9:1 transformer with a BNC coax
connector and a 450 ohm terminating resistor. Both are contained in very nice
looking waterproof boxes and look to be professionally made. The kit is $24.99
plus shipping. It is e-bay item number 320426006857.

Very good points Chuck. I have no experience at all with the Beverage antenna.
I have never lived in a place where I could erect one. I just noticed this kit
on e-bay and thought I'd point it out.

What I would ask this fellow is what ferrite material he used. Hams tend to
use cores good from 2 - 30 MHZ and they don't work too well when used for LW
and most of MW. A popular ham core is Amidon type 43, and it certainly is not
 optimum for LW.

And if I am going to pay someone to provide me with a mounted, enclosed
termination resistor I would want to know it is a carbon composition type,
rather than the extremely more prevalent carbon film resistor which can't
take any kind of energy from a lightning discharge.

Maybe his stuff is recommendable for us, and maybe not.

Re: [IRCA] St. Kitts - Nevis VON likely moved to 860 from 895

2010-08-25 Thread Patrick Griffith

If my memory is correct it was about 2004, just as the VOA was shutting down
their Belize transmitter site, when I was contacted by some investors who were
interested in both moving to Belize for retirement and in establishing a new AM
station in Belize. They were looking for a chief engineer for the station who
would also be an investor and willing to relocate to Belize. I believe the
discussion included talk about using the former VOA transmitter site in Punta
Gorda - at least the antenna system which I believe consisted of two horizontal
wire rhombics suspended from very tall wooden poles. The rhombics were
directional and as I recall one was aimed pretty much north right across the
middle of Belize (Punta Gorda is at the far south end of the country) and the
other was aimed slightly east of south down the middle of South America. I
believe one was on 1530 and the other on 1580. The VOA was running two fairly
new 100 kw transmitters which was definitely beyond our budget !
to operate and maintain, especially in a climate that averages 170 inches of
rain per year. Lots of problems with humidity. (By contrast the north end of
the country averages about 60 inches per year.) We would probably have used the
north rhombic on its former VOA frequency to avoid retuning. But the VOA had
urgent need for the transmitters elsewhere. I later heard that the VOA
completely raised the Punta Gorda site and took down everything including the
antenna array. The investors had also apparently discussed the idea with
government officials in Belize and again had a favorable response. But
somewhere somehow the plans fell through and I eventually lost contact with the
gentlemen.

As to the former Radio Belize on 834 kHz with 20 kw, it was long gone at that
time and the country had no AM stations. It seems to me that back in the day
(70s) Radio Belize also had 4 or 5 synchronous transmitters located around the
country. I think that they were all on discreet frequencies in the 900 to 1000
kHz range and were each running 1 kw.

Re: [IRCA] Status

Phil, that's good news indeed. You are blessed. You faired far better than I.
The past 2 months have been bad news for me. You may recall that I already have
3 cardiac stents and a pacemaker/AICD in my body. On July 7th my employer came
looking for me because I didn't show up for my scheduled 12 hour work shift and
didn't answer my cell phone. I was found unconscious and had apparently been on
my face on the floor for about 24 hours. I was taken by ambulance to the
hospital where I eventually spent over 2 weeks and ended up having a big toe
amputated! I now have a PICC line in my arm and I have been going to the
hospital every day for the past 30 days to get an infusion of antibiotics to
fight off the infection that caused them to remove my toe (secondary to
diabetes). So I've been out of work for almost 2 months now. Fortunately I had
managed to save a little money and in June, right before this happened, I
applied to start receiving my fire department retirement pension. I!
should get my first monthly check from that this Friday. It's certainly not
enough to live on. But it is better than nothing. Congratulations are also in
order to you on the wedding! It is good indeed that you will be well in time
for that. Best wishes my friend.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] LORAN-C 100 kHz Nantucket

2010-08-11 Thread Patrick Griffith

The Loran-C decommissioning has been on and off again so many times that it is
difficult to keep up with. Homeland Security wanted to keep the system and
upgrade it. The House version of the 2010 Homeland Security Appropriations Act
funded the Loran-C system at $36 million and requires the Coast Guard to submit
a plan for upgrading the system to eLoran, as a long-term backup for GPS.
However, I read that the US Loran system was shut down on February 8, 2010 and
the Russian and Canadian segments followed shortly thereafter. There are some
photos from my 2001 visit to the Gillette WY site on one of my my web sites at

Re: [IRCA] Off the wall question

2010-04-24 Thread Patrick Griffith

In one of my previous careers I served for over 12 years as a 911 dispatcher in
two states. My first dispatch job was in Rockford IL in the late 70s where I
fondly remember the long wire antenna running between the old police
headquarters roof and the roof of city hall at the opposite corner of the
block. I was told that this was the antenna used for the old AM transmitter
which had been located on the roof of the police station. The antenna wire was
a heavy looking mutli-strand cable and the insulators at each end looked to be
about 2 feet in length. The Rockford police went on the air in 1933 and
converted to two-way radio in 1940. Several years ago I researched some of the
history of police operations in the AM band. The Galvin Manufacturing Company
of Chicago (Motorola was their brand name) realized that many police
departments were ordering car radios from them for use in their police cars.
Recognizing a market for a police specific product in 1936 they introduced a
spe!
cial receiver called the Motorola Police Cruiser. It was capable of receiving
from 1550 kc to 2800 kc. One of the primary differences from the Motorola car
radio was that the police receiver was crystal controlled for frequency
stability on a specific channel. At this time Galvin was having trouble meeting
the demand for its very popular Motorola car radios. So initially the police
receivers were only produced on weekends so as not to disrupt normal car radio
production during the week. By 1936 Galvin had introduced an AM mobile
transmitter operating in the 30-40 mc UHF band to enable police cars to talk
back to the dispatcher via radio. In the 1920s and 1930s many police
departments in the US broadcast on 1712 or 1714 kc. There are reports that at
night these channels were so busy that the various police departments across
the country had to take turns broadcasting. Some of the early police
transmitters sent Morse code messages instructing individual squad cars to
respon!
d to a call box to get their message via telephone. As early as 1921 t
he Detroit police had a mobile radio system. The transmitter had the call sign
KOP which some attribute to the origin of the word cop as a slang for police
officers (most likely cop is a shortened version of copper resulting from
the common use of copper badges many years before the Detroit radio system
existed). The Detroit system operated on 1050 kc and later was moved to 1080
kc. Some exceptions to the 1712/1714 kc frequencies that I noted were Berkeley
CA on 2410 kc, and most radio equipped departments in the state of Tennessee on
1619 kc. A history of the Denver police radio system indicates that they
operated on 1610 kc. That history mentioned that this was a common nationwide
police frequency as well and mentions Denver police cars relaying messages at
night between various western US police agencies. Relays between Indio CA and
Kansas are specifically mentioned. It also mentions that the Grand Junction CO
police were on this frequency as well and came in so cle!
ar that Denver officers sometimes responded to calls with similar addresses
that were actually intended for Grand Junction officers. I found a reference
stating that in 1949 the FRC (pre-FCC) ordered all law enforcement stations to
move to VHF. However, it appears that it may have taken years for this move to
be completed. Here are some early police radio call signs taken from various
historical references: KOP Detroit, KGPX Denver, WPGD Rockford IL, WLAW New
York City, WMAZ Indianapolis, KSW Berkeley, WPDA Tulare, KGJX Pasadena, KGPL
Los Angeles, KGPI Omaha, KGZY San Bernadino, KGPC St Louis, WPDB WPDC WPDD
Chicago, WRR Dallas.

Re: [IRCA] Spain on 855 and KOA IBOC off again

2009-12-21 Thread Patrick Griffith

KOA may be having problems at the transmitter. A couple weekends ago I noticed
that the flasher for the beacons had failed. With the top of the tower in thick
clouds the beacons were flashing very erratically and sometimes would stay off
for several minutes. I believe that most beacon flashers are designed to fail
in the on position but that did not happen. The problem was quickly corrected
at the beginning of the week so they must have known about it. I wonder if they
took a lightning strike?

By the way several of the air traffic controllers at nearby Centennial airport
use the KOA tower as a landmark for incoming flights from the southeast. I
frequently hear them say report at the KOA tower.

KOA does not have an auxilliary tower. But it does appear that they have some
kind of setup to allow them to manually switch the tower to what I presume is
an auxilliary transmitter building. I have observed a sort of slant wire feed
system with a wire attached to the tower just above the first set of guy wire
attachments. This wire runs over to a tall electrical pole next to a seperate
building next to the main transmitter building. The down feed of that wire
appears to be equipped with an electric power line type of fuse that is in the
open position to interrupt the feed from entering the building. It appears that
they can close this fuse to complete the circuit from the antenna into this
building. Very interesting! There is a new mall with a Sports Authority store
right next to the transmitter site. Parking in back by the loading dock places
you just about 300 feet from the north side of the tower.

Re: [IRCA] Personal Introduction - Hello

2009-12-14 Thread Patrick Griffith

Thanks Pete. My move into the shadow of KOA was a matter of convenience and I
had little choice since I work in the area. For the past 1 1/2 years I have
been making a 50 mile daily round trip commute to work on I-25 directly through
Denver. When traffic was bad this commute sometimes took up to 2 hours each
way. Now I am 15 minutes from work.

You may be interested to know that I have 1700 kHz preprogrammed into my car
radio. Since I listen to KOA often for local news and weather updates, in the
Parker area I listen to it on the harmonic of 1700 so that I don't chance
frying the front end of the receiver on 850. The signal on 1700 is great
throughout the Parker area and I almost think that the audio sounds better on
1700.

Subject: [IRCA] Personal Introduction - Hello

My name is Patrick Griffith. I live in Parker, Colorado in the USA. Parker
is a suburb of Denver. It is located about 20 miles southeast of Denver at
an elevation of 5,868 feet above sea level. Parker is home to the KOA/850
transmitter which is about 2 miles from my house.

I have been away from the IRCA list for a few months due to some personal
issues. So, to some, this is a re-introduction of sorts. To those who
previously communicated with me please note the change of my e-mail
provider from the somewhat problematic Webtv to a more conventional Hotmail
  account.

I grew up in rural northern Illinois where I became an avid DXer in 1965 at
the age of 13. I migrated to the Denver area in 1981. I am a retired
firefighter/EMT. I actually retired at the rank of Fire Investigator. I
have also had previous careers as a police officer, burglar and fire alarm
response officer, 911 dispatcher, broadcast engineer, and radio producer. I
presently work as an armed security screener for the Arapahoe County court
  system.

Since 1965 I have also been an intermittent disaster response employee for
the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS). I am one of the founders of
Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) CO-2 located here in the Denver
area. This team responds to large scale medical disasters and also
pre-stages at events with the potential for large scale medical emergencies
nationwide. This team is also designated as one of four National Medical
Response Teams for Weapons of Mass Destruction. As a member of the
management support unit for these teams I have responded to a number of
incidents ranging from the bombing at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta to
hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. In 2003 I was recognized by Homeland
Security Secretary Tom Ridge as a Founding Member of the U.S. Department of
  Homeland Security.

I have several professional certifications from the Society of Broadcast
Engineers and I am a General class amateur radio (ham) operator - call sign
N0NNK. In 2006 and 2007 I helped to construct and proof the present
transmitter site for the AM 1510 station located here in the Denver area.
It is a 4-tower directional array.

I have also done some writing having published a small book and 14 magazine
articles. The book that I published (in 1998) was titled AM Broadcast
Station Antenna Systems - A Basic Guide. It was written primarily with the
  AM DXer in mind.

My primary receiver is a Drake R-8 and my antenna is a Kiwa 12-inch air
core loop. I am an avid collector of AM and shortwave QSLs. I presently
have 6 binders filled with the QSLs that I have collected since the 1960s.

I am happy to be back on the IRCA list. I have always found it to be an
excellent source of information. I hope all are well and I wish you and
  yours happy holidays.

[IRCA] Denver news

2009-08-19 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
Word has come through that KCKK/1510 Littleton/Denver has been sold to
4-K's LLLP for $450,000. This is the NRC Broadcasting station that I
previously worked for and that we spent over $1M on rebuilding with a
new transmitter site in 2006 and 2007. Ironically the new FCC license
came through about the same time as the sale authorizing an increase in
power from 9.5 kw day/19 kw night to 10 kw day/25 kw night. The night
signal primarily protects the 50 kw legacy stations in Spokane and
Nashville.

BTW I am in the process of moving to Parker CO which will place me about
2 miles from the KOA transmitter. I expect to be off of the internet for
a couple weeks most likely ditching my WebTV service and returning on hi
speed DSL with a real computer.

Re: [IRCA] Talking House

2009-02-28 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
I have a talking house (Radio Realty brand) that I have had for quite a
few years. It has front panel digital frequency selection. I used it to
tune my analog GE SRIII to a specific frequency since the slide rule
dial on the SRIII was just a guessing game. I'd set the transmitter to
the frequency I wanted, peak tune the SRIII to the center of the
frequency, turn the transmitter off, and the SRIII was perfectly tuned.
The transmitter has a front panel peaking capacitor and a meter to allow
you to tune to maximum output power on the selected frequency. It has a
thick flexible rubber coated wire antenna coming out of the back.
Ideally you would sit it near a window in the house you were selling,
hang the antenna over a curtain rod, plug in a tape recorder, and let it
run. I actually considered starting a small part-time business of
renting these out to local realtors and setting them up on site about 10
years ago when the housing market was good. I once saw one of these in
use at a self serve car wash to give instructions to the customers.
Anyone ever see them used in businesses other than real estate?

[IRCA] TIS Update

2009-01-05 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
I noticed that the Information Station Specialists (ISS) web site has
recently updated the list of TIS stations installed by them. This very
useful list can be found at www.theradiosource.com/

The ISS web site also has a very interesting list of National Parks with
TIS stations. It shows the very hard to find NTIA issued 3x3 call signs
for most of them. An interesting item of note it appears that
Yellowstone National Park has about 25 TIS stations each with a separate
call sign but all transmitting on 1610 kHz. Also of note for those
visiting HI there is a TIS at the USS Arizona memorial. It is listed as
KOJ799 on 1670 kHz.

The ISS web site is a plethora of interesting information. I have spent
many hours looking through it. Check out the main menu on the home page.

Re: [IRCA] WBZ IBOC is OFF!

2009-01-04 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
Still on the backup rig tonight, but they've drifted down a bit, to
1030.014.
Barry
///
Just out of curiosity I wonder if WBZ runs Power-Side on the backup
transmitter? I know a lot of stations that had Power-Side before IBOC
came along kept it on their backup rigs (KPOF/910 for example). Perhaps
I should pose this as a question to the more technically experienced
engineer types on the list (Mark Durenberger where are you?). Since
Power-Side concentrates the audio into one of the two sidebands of the
carrier frequency, would that make the signal appear to be slightly off
frequency toward whichever sideband is being used? I know that on an
analog radio receiving a station using Power-Side you get the best sound
by tuning slightly off frequency to one sideband or another. The carrier
frequency should not be effected by Power-Side. But I believe that the
apparent center of bandwidth for the overall mask of the transmitted
signal would be shifted one way or another. At KCKK/1510 we have
Power-Side and we run it slanted toward the lower sideband to help us
stay further away from the audio of the 1520 adjacent channel blowtorch
in OKC.

Re: [IRCA] Sort of On-Topic radio announcement...

2008-11-11 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
A neighbor who was a very active HF band amateur radio operator sparked
my interest in radio in 1965 when I was 13. I never saw him use code. He
always used voice in AM or sideband mode. I still remember sitting in
his northern Illinois ham shack one Saturday evening and being allowed
to talk to an amateur who was maritime mobile on a private yacht in the
Caribbean. I tried for many years to get an amateur license but could
not master the code. Over the years I probably purchased every code
learning aid that was available. As an adult I eventually discovered
that I was slightly dyslexic and that was why I couldn't learn the code.
I often wonder how much I lost in my life because of that ridiculous and
outdated code requirement. When the code requirement was finally
eliminated for VHF and above (could that have been almost 16 years ago
now?) I was one of the very first no-code techs to be licensed. And,
more recently, when code was finally eliminated for the HF class
licenses I was one of the very first to upgrade. I am proud to be a code
free General class licensee. And I am planning to upgrade soon. MORSE
CODE SUCKS!

[IRCA] KKFN format change

2008-08-31 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
Yesterday I mentioned that KKFN / 950 was stunting with what appeared to
be a format change to CW. Today they have changed the format of their
stunting and are playing a loop of a couple hundred 2 to 3 second bites
of classic rock hits from the 60s to the 80s followed by commercials
from that era, IDs from KIMN when it was the top rated AM rock station
in Denver on AM 950, and sound bites from some of the KIMN jocks from
that era. I also heard them say that something old is returning to AM
950 in Denver. So who knows what format they will end up with.

because I am more careful with what I try to get away with in the post

In 1928 San Francisco had KFRC (610), KFWI (930), KGTT (1420), KJBS

Re: [IRCA] KNRV AM-1150 to drop local programming

The 1150 in Denver, Colorado and the 1190 in Phoenix, AZ have just been
listed for sale. Might that be the main reason for any change at these
two stations ???
//
Mike I heard that too. This is the result of what is going on - not the
cause. Apparently the stockholders have had enough of the low ratings
and resulting low income.

The 1150 in Denver would be a nice property if the night signal were a
little stronger (currently 1 kw). The transmitter plant was completely
rebuilt about 3 years ago when my employer (NRC Broadcasting) owned the
station. Virtually everything there is new except for the towers
themselves which were in excellent shape. The transmitter is HD capable.
You may recall that NRC operated the HD for 1 week and then shut it off
due to interference complaints from the 1170 station in Windsor CO. The
HD has been off ever since. The current studios for 1150 are only about
1 year old. I haven't seen them so I have no idea what they are like. I
heard unofficially that the asking price is $2M.

Chris Knight said: According to the Federal Census Bureau (via local TV
newscast), the Hispanic population in Denver comprises more than 50% of
the total population.
//
Chris, you must be very careful when reading the Census Bureau results.
There are many caveats to consider. Also consider that the census
results for Denver (population 588,349 at the July 1, 2007 estimate)
only represent about 24% of the Denver Metro population (2,464,866).

The 2006 census indicated that 82.8% of the population of Denver is
white and 34.8% is Hispanic or Latino. Read directly those two groups
alone add up to 117.6%. The sometimes misleading caveat in the census
statistics is that Hispanics and Latinos can also be counted as part of
any race (white, black, etc). The same is true for any other ethnic
group. For example, there are white and black Asians. The 82.8% white
statistic should include members of all of the groups who consider
themselves as white.

[IRCA] KNRV AM-1150 to drop local programming

2008-07-23 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
The Denver Business Journal reported today that Denver radio station
KNRV-AM will drop its Spanish-language local news and sports programming
and instead carry a national satellite feed from Radio Formula Satellite
Network beginning August 1st.

In a statement, Heberto Villers-Limas, station president and CEO of
station owner New Radio Venture Inc., said his painful decision to
discontinue local programming had nothing to do with the results of the
radio operations, but rather is the result of a conflict between the
station and shareholders. He did not elaborate.

Another New Radio Venture Spanish station, KNUV-AM In Phoenix, plans to
close down at the end of July, The Associated Press reported Tuesday,
saying investors decided to pull the plug in the wake of advertising
budget cuts.

New Radio Venture will be dissolved in coming months, Villers-Limas
said, but he hopes to form a new company.

On the whole, stations targeting the Latino market have been doing well
in Denver. Mexican-regional music station KXPK-FM is No. 3 in the latest
Arbitron rankings (behind talk-news outlet KOA-AM and country station
KYGO-FM) with a 5.8 share. Three other Latino-themed music stations
KJMN-FM (No. 19, 1.4 share), KBNO-AM (No. 21 with a 1.2 share) and
KMXA-AM (No. 23, 1.0) have been among the fastest-growing stations in
the market, according to Denver Business Journal research.

[IRCA] Tower Identity

Has anyone noticed the Farmer's Insurance commercial for identity theft
protection with the rooftop foot chase theme? At the end of the chase a
large self-supporting 4-leg tower is very briefly visible in the

roof of an adjacent building and appears to have a 4-letter call sign
mounted vertically on the face that is towards the camera. The scene is
so short that I haven't been able to read the call letters. Every time I

Re: [IRCA] IBOCer 1600?

2008-06-16 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
I've been checking KEPN/1600 for several days and as Chris noted
sometimes the IBOC on 1590 is barely even noticeable. Because of this I
wasn't completely certain that it was their IBOC that I was hearing on
1610.

It is interesting that KDDZ/1690 is diplexed into KEPN tower #1 with
twice the power of KEPN. I believe KDDZ is also running IBOC. This tower
is 358 feet tall which is 210.8 degrees at 1600 and 222.6 degrees at
1690. I was surprised that KEPN didn't lease one of the 3 shorter towers
to KDDZ. The other 3 towers at that site are 184 feet tall and are only
used in the night pattern for KEPN.

John Sampson said: Missed the first part of this thread but this aroused
my curiosity. Was this a spur off of the old ATT backbone microwave
network?
///
John (and all who are interested), Buckhorn Mountain was an ATT
microwave site linking Broomfield, Greeley, and Timnath in CO and
Cheyenne and Crow Creek Hill (Laramie) in WY. It was part of the first
transcontinental microwave network. The Timnath site linked to the
Longmont site which John mentioned. At Longmont the radio path
intersected the L4 hardened coax route which linked Denver and Platte
Junction WY. Platte Junction was an underground site on the east-west
transcontinental cable route. The Longmont site is very visible to
anyone travelling on I-25 between Denver and Fort Collins as it is right
next to the highway at what is known locally as Mead Mountain or Mead
Hill. The CDOT TIS station on 530 kHz that IDs as Mead is also located
at that point. The ATT microwave equipment at this site has been
removed. But the tower is intact and still in use for mobile telephone
and two-way radio. The large building is externally intact. But I do not
know if the facility is still an active part of the underground cable
route. There is a lot of very interesting historic information about
ATT Long Lines available on the Web.

I recall searching the FCC files just as the expanded band was opening
up and finding a large number of low power beacons licensed to oil
production companies in the Gulf between 1600 and 1700 kHz. There were
also some high power licenses to power companies in this band - mostly
in FL. I suspected that these might be power line subcarrier control
circuits. Maybe these activities were moved up above 1700 kHz to make
way for the expanded band.

Re: [IRCA] CBS FM HD antenna tower Portland Oregon (OT)

2008-06-05 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
Paul Walker said:
Woah, $1million for an Antenna? Im no engineer, but that seems very very
steep to me. $1 mil is probably for the entire HD conversion for all 5
stations.
//
$1 million does not surprise me at all Paul. A lot of stations spend far
more than that on new antenna projects. He is probably talking about the
entire antenna project - not just the antenna itself. He mentioned a
tower with an elevator in it. And you must consider all of the ancillary
equipment. And there may even be a structure included in that price.
Antenna projects can be very expensive.

When a couple of suburban FM stations decided to back door into the
Denver market a couple years ago they built a 2,000 foot tower on the
very rural prairie 45 miles east of Denver. In order to secure approval
from the county commissioners to build the tower they had to also agree
to fund construction of a new control tower for the Front Range Airport
which is 30 miles away from the antenna tower. It is the tallest control
tower in the US. What do you think that antenna project cost?

When my current employer built the new transmitter site for KCKK-AM,
which is on county wildland property, they had to also agree to fund
construction of a new office and maintenance garage facility for the
county highway department. That antenna project cost about $3 million.

When my employer moved 105.5 into the northeast CO market they bought a
historic former ATT Long Lines microwave relay site on top of Buckhorn
Mountain west of Fort Collins for the antenna facility. This was
originally one of the relay stations on ATTs first transcontinental
microwave system. It is at 8,300 feet above sea level. This is a huge
two-story facility that was built during the cold war era. It was
hardened against bomb blasts and had decontamination shower facilities
at the entrances. It held living quarters and mess hall facilities for
an entourage of resident technicians. It contained a fully operational
backup generator powered by a diesel locomotive engine. And it had one
of those huge 4-leg towers next to it that was typical of the microwave
relay towers of the era. The line of site coverage from here is amazing.
With binoculars on a clear day you can see well into WY and incredibly
far out onto the eastern CO plains. I'm estimating that the facility has
about 20,000 square feet of floor space. Our equipment probably occupies
about 2% of the structure. Another very expensive antenna project. BTW
there is some interesting historic information and photos of this
facility from 1955 and 1975 at
http://long-lines.net/places-routes/Buckhorn-Mtn/index.html.

[IRCA] CO Tornados

2008-05-28 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
The storm track for the largest of the half dozen tornados that struck
northern CO recently showed the 1-mile wide twister crossing right
through the WWV / WWVB property just north of Fort Collins before
continuing on into WY leaving a 35-mile long path of destruction. I
queried the NIST folks to see if they had suffered any damage. I
received this reply today:

The stations were not damaged by the storm last week; although we did
lose power for several hours, our backup power systems functioned
normally and the broadcasts were not interrupted more than a few
seconds. We did see gusty winds and ping-pong ball sized hail, but the
tornado had apparently lifted or bypassed the stations by the time the
storm moved over us.

Thanks for asking.

Re: [IRCA] Quite possibly the smallest licensed radio station...

2008-05-21 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
In my 1971 edition of Vane Jones' North American Radio-TV Station Guide
there were 31 stations licensed on 88.1 with a transmitter power of 10
watts or less. Only one was listed as being stereo capable. 88.1 to 91.9
was, with very few exceptions, reserved exclusively for educational
stations in the US. My recollection is that many of the stations that
were licensed for 10 watts actually ran less power. I know that one 10
watt station at a small college in my area actually ran 1 watt into a
single horizontal bay at about 5 feet HAAT. I believe that type
acceptance could be waived in lieu of an FCC inspection for the low
power educational stations. I remember some publicity about the fact
that both the transmitter and the antenna were built from scratch by the
students.

2008-03-07 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
I heard 1510 was silent again because the check bounced. Is that true?
///
Not true - mostly. There was an incident a few weeks ago. I can tell
you that the LMA is now on a weekly basis since the current lessee
failed to get financing for the purchase of the station. I was
instructed to install a CD player in the audio chain at the transmitter
site and to provide some alternate programming in case of future payment
problems. I also know that another broadcast entity with a number of
stations nationwide is interested in 1510 as their first Denver station
and has hired an engineering consultant to check it out. One of their
concerns is that 1510 is still operating under a CP/STA while the proof
of performance measurements are in progress. The latest estimate on that
is another 6 to 8 weeks depending on the weather and other factors. We
lost 3 days of work on it this week because of weather. But it was 55
and dry here today.

For now KCKK is still Mile High Sports Radio and // KSXT is still The
Sports Extra. I have noticed some diversity in their programming lately
with a live news hour at noon on weekdays and a financial program on
Saturday morning. They have also added former Denver Broncos cheerleader
Renee Herlocker to their air staff. Herlocker is quite stunning. She was
featured on the cover of 5280 magazine about a year ago as a local
person who has trouble dating because of the time constraints in her
busy lifestyle. At that time her occupation was listed as marketing
associate. I don't think they hired her for her rather gritty sounding
voice talents if you know what I mean. Of course, that's only my
personal opinion.

[IRCA] KCFR Denver to move from AM to FM leaving 1340 for sale

2008-01-17 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
From the Denver Business Journal:

KCFR, Colorado Public Radio's news-and-information channel, is moving
back to the high-fidelity FM band with the purchase of a new frequency
for the station.

The main reasons for the change are better [audio] quality and the fact
that most people expect to find public radio on the left hand side of
the FM dial, Max Wycisk, president of Centennial-based Colorado Public
Radio (CPR), said Wednesday.

CPR plans to purchase Denver station 88.1 FM from EMF Broadcasting of
Rocklin, Calif., for $8.2 million. The 88.1 signal currently carries
Christian music under the brand K-LOVE.
CPR said it will move its KCFR news channel from 1340 AM to 90.1 FM, the
frequency now used by its classical-music station, KVOD.
KVOD would then slide down the FM dial to 88.1 FM. CPR plans to put its
1340 AM frequency up for sale.

The changes will take effect this spring, subject to Federal
Communications Commission approval, CPR said.

EMF Broadcasting will continue to carry the K-LOVE programming on its
91.1 FM frequency, where K-LOVE is now simulcast.
KCFR features the national news broadcasts All Things Considered and
Morning Edition, as well as talk, arts and feature programs such as
Fresh Air, Talk of the Nation and This American Life.

It also carries local news and the interview program Colorado Matters
and world-news broadcasts from the British Broadcasting Corp.
Until 2001, CPR broadcast both news and music on a single FM frequency.
Then it split its programming into two stations, moving news to AM and
keeping music on FM.

[IRCA] CFFX-960 Test Not Heard

2008-01-15 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
I didn't think I'd have much of a chance with KKFN-950 spewing The
Horrible Hiss of IBOC right at me from just 5 miles down the road. I am
directly in front of one of their minor lobes. But I gave it a shot for
the first 2 hours of the test. I could detect some analog audio on 960
in the best null that I could create on KKFN. But it was too weak for me
to determine who or what it was. Thanks anyway to all involved for
arranging this test.

My hometown PD (Rockford IL) had an AM band station starting in 1933
with the call WPGD. The station was gone by the time I became interested
in radio. So I never heard them and I'm not sure what frequency they
were on. But the end-fed long wire antenna for the station remained
strung between police headquarters and city hall well into the late 70s.

I read a history of LAPD communications that said they were on 1712 kc
(later moved to 1730 kc) from 1931 to 1949 with the call KGPL.

I have a QSL posted on my AM-DXer web site (see link below) from the New
York City Fire Department from 1939 when they were on 1630 kc with the
call WNYF.

Although modern interoperability standards push plain language
operations now, I have always been fascinated with the very early
brevity codes that still creep into use on some public safety radio
systems. For example, my hometown still uses signal 8 to refer to a
meeting between two officers. NYPD still uses K to signify the end of
a transmission. And the Miami area still uses QSL to acknowledge that
a message was received. When I was a police dispatcher in IL in the 70s
our department routinely used about 200 brevity codes that every officer
and dispatcher was required to memorize. Now, over 30 years later, I
can't remember what I had for breakfast this morning. But I still have
those dang radio codes burned into my long-term memory.

far as the Jersey shore. I was stationed at Fort Dix NJ for 4 weeks as

intake center for refugees with medical concerns plus the family members
who accompanied them. The region was experiencing a terrible heatwave
during the time I was there with ambient temperatures reaching as high
as 115 degrees at the base. I got one partial day off out of the +30
days I was there on a hot Sunday afternoon. I drove over to the Jersey
shore where I planned to catch a train into the city. While I was
waiting for the train I was listening to news reports of a significant
number of people who had died in NYC secondary to the heatwave. That
combined with the fear of missing the last of a limited number of Sunday

would have only had about 7 hours to spend in the city anyway.

[IRCA] Strange QSL

2008-01-08 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
I just received a F/D QSL letter confirming my February 28, 2004
reception of KRZI / 1580 in Waco TX. I sent a cassette recording of my
reception with the original report and I sent a followup report during
the 4th quarter of 2004. Of course the KRZI calls are now on 1660 in
Waco and 1580 no longer exists. What's even more strange is that the QSL
letter was dated 2006 and outdated items mentioned in the letter seem to
indicate that it was indeed written in 2006. The envelope it arrived in
was postmarked 01/05/08. Strange!

QSL report.

dated 2006 and includes outdated information that seems to indicate that

[IRCA] Chicago area questions

2008-01-03 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
1. Can anyone tell me if WCEV and WRLL (ex-WVON) are still a shared time
situation on 1450? The FCC records indicate that they are. But I thought
that had gone away.

2. Can someone remind me who the station is that was transmitting from
the north suburbs with several very short top-loaded towers? The last
time I visited there, probably a half dozen years ago, I believe they
were ethnic - possibly Polish.

3. Who was the station that was transmitting from the roof an old
factory building on the near west side? I think it may have been a split
site operation. But I don't recall if this was the day or night site.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [IRCA] Chicago area questions

2008-01-03 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
Thanks everyone for the response.

Scott, you answered all of my questions. WNVR is the Polish station I
couldn't remember. There was a discussion earlier about short AM
antennas on Barry's technician reflector and I was trying to find my
WNVR photos. But I couldn't remember the call letters or frequency. As I
recall they were subject to a 100-foot height limit due to local
restrictions. They ended up with a DA with four 36.6 degree (97-feet)
towers with 9.4 degrees (25-feet) of top-loading using stiff horizontal
top elements. I visited there while it was still a CP in September 2000
and had trouble finding the site even with a GPS. The towers were
basically surrounded by taller trees. I'll post up some pics on one of
my web sites shortly.

I believe WNTD/950 was the rooftop site in question. I'm glad you got
pictues of it. I didn't. But I did get a good tower hunting story. I
found the site after a little searching. I'm still not exactly clear on
what part of Chicago I was in. I knew better than to go on the south
side alone. But I thought I was far enough west to be safe. While I was
getting my camera equipment together for a walk to try and get a good
angle for some pics a police cruiser drove by. He stopped about 1/2
block down and backed up to where I was. I had my camera equipment
spread out on the hood of my car. It was a Sunday morning and I didn't
see anyone else around the area. So I figured he thought I was
suspicious. He didn't even get out of his car. He rolled down the window
asked me if I had health insurance. I thought this was an odd question
and I wondered why he didn't first ask what I was doing. I recall
thinking that maybe he was selling health insurance on the side. I
assured him that I had good health insurance. He then said that's good
because with out-of-state plates and an expensive camera in this
neighborhood you're probably going to need to use it in about 10
minutes. He was a bit of a smart ass. But he may have saved my life. I
thanked him, threw the camera on the seat of my car, locked the door,
and started looking for the fastest route back to the interstate.

[IRCA] Christmas came early

2007-12-24 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
I woke up a little early this morning and was rewarded with a good log
on WVON/1690 in IL. This is a good catch because I have a local (KDDZ)
on the same channel. I presume WVON was on day power and KDDZ was still
on night power. With the Kiwa loop I was able to null KDDZ almost
completely out at 8:20 AM EST. My best loop heading for Chicago is
almost at a right angle to KDDZ which was a big help. WVON was IDing as
the Talk of Chicago. I'll bet WLS loves that!

Speaking of WLS - I just saw the video of the attack on the WLS-TV
studio yesterday. Someone apparently intentionally drove a car through
the studio wall during a live news broadcast! I wonder if this will be
considered as a terrorism incident on a Federally licensed broadcaster?

Please keep all of the public safety folks and others that will be
working on Christmas day in your hearts. Since our studios are staffed
24/7 I volunteered to work the master control shift from 11 AM to 7 PM
on Christmas day and then back at midnight for another 6 hours on
Wednesday morning. I'm sure the jocks have all voice tracked their
shifts so I'll probably be alone. I just hope there is something good on
the DirecTV in the studio to keep me awake! Maybe someone's voice track
will fail and I'll get to go live!

Merry Christmas to all.

his Tasty Canadian message. The message urges the aliens who are
coming to our planet in search of a food source to eat the Canadians
first because they are much more tasty than those of us on the US side
of the border!

Re: [IRCA] More digital noise?

2007-12-09 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
Hmmm. Sounds a lot like WTIR. I got a QSL from them in 2002 when they
were still on 1680. It was signed by some guy named PAUL WALKER!

//

I used to be subjected to hearing a tape delayed version of CNN Headline
News... at one radio station I worked for. That was our programming,
interlayed with traveler news, information and tips.. basiclaly a full
power TIS!

[IRCA] Daytime skywave on MW

2007-12-07 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
I should have mentioned this earlier in the week. But I have been
extremely busy. We were experiencing some heavy daytime skywave
reflection in the beginning of the week on 1510. I'm not sure if this
was just a local phenomena or not. What we were getting appeared to be
very high angle reflection from our own station in the 15 to 25 km range
both east and west of our transmitter. We verified this by briefly
shutting our transmitter off and the skywave ceased. The reflection was
so strong on Monday and Tuesday that we were unable to get reliable
readings on the field strength meters. So we temporarily suspended that
project for the rest of the week. I think I recall that someone east of
here also mentioned an unusual daytime skywave reception in the early
part of the week.

Re: [IRCA] OT: Bernie Ward KGO-810 indicted

2007-12-07 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
The folks who do the TV show CSI seem to agree - their theme song Who
Are You was/is a hit by The Who.
//

All three of the shows in the CSI franchise use a Who song for their
opening themes. CSI: Miami uses Won't Get Fooled Again and CSI: New York
uses Baba O'Riley.

I also don't understand how someone can be indicted for looking at
something bad on a web site that's in the public domain. You would
think that the authorities would be more interested in prosecuting the
people who created and maintain the web site with the questionable or
illegal content. I suspect that there may be more to this story than we
know.

Re: [IRCA] Vashon Island TIS

2007-12-03 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
Of lesser consequence is the arrival of a new TIS on 1650 on Vashon
Island.
/
This has been listed on the ISS web site for some time. Probably been in
the planning / construction phase for a while. Says it belongs to Vashon
Island Fire Rescue. No further info.

Re: [IRCA] OC on KWSX

2007-12-02 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
Our progressive music FM in the Denver area (KCUV) has been playing the
new Fogerty album for several weeks. Several cuts are very reminiscent
of the old Fogerty. However, several cuts are very political and our PD
restricted them from air play.
///
Sure, you might even find Fogerty in some local pub still trying to make
enough to get out of town.
--
Actually, he's doing quite well for himself at the moment. He has a new
album out (which is getting great reviews, though I've yet to hear it
myself) and is touring in venues much larger than local Lodi pubs at the
moment...

[IRCA] Adventures in IBOC

2007-11-26 Thread Patrick Griffith, N0NNK / WPE9HVW
Here's another example of just how bad IBOC is. I was staged at a
monitoring point 11.5 miles NW of KCKK/1510 most of the day today while
our consultant made adjustments to the 19 kw night DA pattern. I was at
this particular location because it is on one of the nulls (328 degrees)
that protects the 1510 station in Spokane WA. I was reading about 3 mV
on the field intensity meter which should present a decent signal in the
local area. While waiting I decided to check out the signal on my car
radio. I was surprised to find the signal on 1510 completely covered by
the IBOC hash from 1490 in Boulder. Boulder was 11 miles west of me so I
was almost exactly between the two stations. Boulder is two channels
away and runs only 1 kw ND. Yet it completely obliterated the 3 mV
signal from 1510. I wish I could have shut off 1510 long enough to read
the signal strength of the IBOC noise on that channel.
